letter from the EDITOR
Hello
BEAUTIFUL & DAUNTLESS,
I absolutely love it when September comes around. September to me equals the beginning of fall and the end of summer. For those that cannot stand the cold, they probably do not have such a love for losing the summer. But I get tired of the heat, especially living in Florida. Fall is a great time to remember that it is okay to let go of the things that are dead and/ or dying and see what beautiful things can come from the letting go (I am referencing leaves, in case you did not get that metaphor). Technically, Fall Equinox is not until the end of the month on September 22nd. However, we are all gearing up for fall with our PSL (pumpkin spice lattes), fall fashion, pumpkin carvings and leaf decor. This issue is dedicated mainly to fall fashion but I am going to throw in some of my (and your) other fall favorites to get you in the spirit. Grab your PSL and jacket and start flipping through the pages. XOXO,

id you know that you were made with your very own set of strengths? You are! That is one of the very reasons that you are so unique. According to Donald Clifton of Gallup, there are 34 strengths that each of us have. These strengths we use on a daily basis, in every area of our life: personal and work. We can pull from any of these 34 strengths but we all have a top 5 to 10 that are our strongest ones. To the right I have posted my top 5. Because I know myself better than any other person, I can assure you that those are very much the top strengths that I operate in constantly. Those are what I strive in, grow through, what I am challemged with and the filter to which I pass everything that comes my way.
T
he amazing thing about your list of strengths is that there is only a 1 in 33 million chance that someone else in the world has the same order of 34 strengths that you have. “How do I discover my strengths? You may ask. Well, Gallup has created a self-assesment with 177 questions that you can take. From your first response answers that you provide, you will be given your top 5 strengths. It is awesome to know your top strengths but what is even more helpful is being able to understand what to do with them. All too often, we are told that we need to focus on our weaknesses and try to make them stronger. But the truth is, your weaknesses will never be your strengths. You can get a little better at them. But when you work at strengthening your strengths, you can do the impossible.
A
t the beginning of August, I had the opportunity to go to Gallup in Atlanta, Georgia. For a week I went through advanced training to become a certified strengths coach. During that week, I learned how to help others enhance their strengths and use them to their greatest potential. One of my biggest fears is dying without ever reaching my potential. But as I work on growing my strengths, I have no doubt that I will reach my potential. I

ABOUT Dauntless Magazine
DAUN LESS The second half of this magazine is now being taken over by guys, for guys. Since the creation of this magazine, January 2017, we have excelled at offering real life stories, advice and insight into daily matters. Our writers share what is on their heart in order to bring some life to your current situation. Up to this point, much of the material has been more “lady focused” but we hate to leave out our male counterparts, as they need special rays of light to impact their life as well. In May 2017, after receiving much feed-
back from males asking for more content geared towards them, our wheels started turning. We came up with the idea of having the dual magazine, but we need a name. After conducting a poll on social media, we were given some insight as to what a guy might prefer to be thought of as, and DAUNTLESS was the winner. Below are a few of the reasons as to why Dauntless is now the name of the second half of our e-mag. So, gentlemen, as you are reading, think of yourself in these terms:
“Dauntless means, ‘I am BOLD, COURAGEOUS, and GALLANT. Which trumps all other choices. IMHO.”
- Larry
“Dauntless for sure. Dauntless means, ‘Showing FEARLESSNESS and DETERMINATION.’ That is how I would like to be defined.”
- Arman

TIPS FOR SURVIVING
ADULTHOOD
TERRY RANDOLPH PHOTO BY JOSIAH RICHWINE 66
find traction in your own journey. Life will go off-script. Adapt. Your life will not go as planned. You did not land that dream job, so you are forced to move back home. That relationship which seemed so promising at the beginning ends in a breakup, leaving you to change your status back to ‘single’. In adulthood, life will look differently than how you imagined it. But, that is not a bad thing. Surviving adulthood has less to do with the plans you have going into it and is more about the adaptability you possess when you are there. How you navigate through the wilderness of your experiences and the twists and turns of life is fundamental to your survival as an adult. In the end, you may find that moving back home gave you the opportunity to mend a broken relationship with your parents. And that ‘single’ status gave you opportunity to revitalize some dormant passions. Here, you will write and rewrite your life’s script over and over, not because it was bad, but rather because it is unfinished. Plans are good, but adaptability is better.
For me, adulting was terrifying. I had just graduated from college with my degree and was confronted with daunting questions like, “Now what? What does real life look like as an adult? Will I make it?” At 21, the flood of unanswerable questions left me anxietystricken and panicked. I am a planner, and I enjoy the security of knowing what the next season of life holds. But for the first time, I did not have a plan, just a lot of uncertainty. At that moment, life had just gotten real, and I knew I had arrived into adulthood. At some point, we all get here. For some, adulthood introduces itself with as much tact as a punch to the gut. For others, it is a smoother, less painful transition. Regardless of how or when, we all arrive a little underprepared, a little anxious, and a little naive to the realities we will face. But, there is good news. Despite its tendency for rude introductions, adulthood really is a good place to be, and since my less-than-friendly first encounter, adulthood and I have gotten along well. I have come to realize that it is a place for learning and growing, and my experiences in adulthood, both good and bad, have taught me some things that will also help you
Define YOUR success and pursue it. We all want to be successful, and fortunately, success is within reach. The only caveat is that success will be different for everyone. This is not a cop-out, or a gentler way to say, “You failed.” But think about it for a moment; if we are all unique, equipped with a life-full of different experiences, then should all our successes look the same? Naturally, we may all have some overlap in how we define success, but YOUR success is best defined by you. So, what does success look like for you? How do you know you did well? How you define success 67
in your life is crucial to the understanding of success in adulthood. Success begins from the inside out; it is defined by your innate nature, those simple acts from which you derive significance and value. It could be helping others, creating, teaching or whatever, you just know that it fuels you and resonates with your deepest self. Forming your definition around your innate nature will allow you to put the fullness of your will, passion, and ability toward being successful. You will know when you have the right definition because you will find greater significance in the simplest things you do; a smile to a stranger or a line of poetry begin to matter and add value to your life. With your definition on track, then create goals - small goals, medium goals, shoot-for-the-stars goals, and pursue them with every bit of zeal you possess. You will find that success will begin to come more naturally, because it is easy to want to do what you were meant to do. And accomplishing goals will come easier because they represent who you are. So, pursue success like no one else because no one else in the world can be successful like you. Be in community. Life is better with people. Although every adulting experience is unique, growing into adulthood is an inevitability for all. This means that there are a lot of other people who will share in life experiences that may be similar to your own. You should find some comfort in this, because it means that the frontier of adulthood does not need to be explored alone. In fact, I would encourage you not to go at adulthood by yourself, not because of any inadequacy, but rather because life, and specifically adulthood, is better done within a community. Community is the web of family and friends who support, encour68

age, and strengthen you when you need it most; it is the mantra that we are stronger together. The strength you will need to forge your own path through adulthood does not always come from within, but sometimes from those whom you have invited to be a part of your life. At the very least, life done with others is only half as hard and twice as fulfilling. And considering that adulthood will have its share of difficulties, those moments when others can help you bear the weight of your responsibilities may, indeed, be the reprieve you need to journey on. Enjoy it. You are an adult now, free to do whatever you want, and there is nothing like the thrill of adulthood freedom. But, that freedom comes at a cost, and the currency of adulthood is responsibility. At the intersection of freedom and responsibility is maturity. Adulthood is about maturity; not simply getting older, but being better. Simply defined, maturity is the freedom to do what you want, tempered by the responsibility to do what needs to be done. As we mature, the combination of freedom and responsibility delivers our best selves to the world around us. A mature you is a better you. So, how should we respond to adulthood? Enjoy it. These are your best years. Sure, time and age may diminish some of your abilities, but they leave behind an even greater deposit of experience, experience you can reinvest back into the lives of others. So, embrace every moment adulthood has to offer and squeeze out every ounce of experience. After all, there is no going back. But who would want to? Welcome to adulthood; you made it. Your best years and your best you are ahead. I can guarantee that it will not be what you thought it was going to be, but it will be the best that you make it. 69
