as see it! I have spent nearly 15 years plumbing business journalism of which 12 have been in beauty and I bow to the memory of Mr. Kotecha. I never thought anything could ever happen to him! He created Baccarose, an enigmatic company, where the top beauty brands – ferociously competing with each other worldwide – found common ground in India. I still remember the Drakkar Noir-merchandised shelves in Big Jo’s department store, in an era when Chambor was how close you got to luxury cosmetics in India. The look, feel and the quality of the brand, which is now owned by Baccarose, was the best you could get in those times. It was the early 1990s when L’Oréal was still trying to figure out the India story. Mr. Kotecha, brick by brick, in his most unassuming style, and with his team who were equally low profile, built the prestige cosmetic market in India. From Clarins to Shiseido onwards to Elizabeth Arden, all gravitated towards Baccarose in their choice of distribution in India. Fragrance manufacturers, be it Puig or Interparfum or P&G Prestige, relied heavily on them for India-wide distribution. In the last couple of years, the company had gone on to expand its retail presence from a just a few stores to over 40 Parcos perfumeries – India’s first luxury beauty speciality chain – under the able stewardship of the Italian CEO Toni Parisi and the ultimate inspiration of Hemansu Kotecha himself. The company is also in the process of getting a foothold in the professional distribution system – with Vitality and Comfort Zone. With a deep understanding of the limitations of the market, but armed with a vision that few dared to realise, he delivered year after year, but the pressures just got the better of him. I know that in the annals of Indian Beauty Industry’s history, his name will always be engraved in gold and I am quite sure that the corporate house he created will continue to deliver in the same tradition of understated elegance and professionalism.

“For an image to work, it has to look interesting from every angle to create a conversation,” Petenbrink says. “Always create an interesting shape – it can be a triangle or a rectangle, but make sure that it isn’t perfectly symmetrical.”
