Shiseido develop new skin rejuvenation ingredient
Japanese skincare company Shiseido has revealed a new ingredient developed to rejuvenate skin. Through 12 years of research, the company has developed Stemlan-173, a new active ingredient which effectively protects the degradation of laminin-511, a key component of the epidermal basement membrane existing between the epidermis and dermis. Laminin-511 plays an important role in maintaining epidermal stem cells, which are a vital factor for skin rejuvenation, and degrades not only through the ageing process but also with UV exposure. By inhibiting the degradation of laminin-511 through treatment with Stemlan-173, Shiseido has found that the epidermal basement membrane maintains good condition in research subjects aged zero to their 60s, suggesting that Stemlan-173 has a significant skin texture improving effect. What’s more, Shiseido also found that Algae extract, consisting of green algae, red algae and brown algae, acts as an active ingredient to promote the production of laminin-511, which decreases with ageing. Shiseido will apply their findings to the development of skincare products for skin rejuvenation. Shiseido: www.shiseido.com

In one step you can increase the length and height of the nail bed extension due to the product’s consistency and, as the gel is not self-levelling, the product stays where you have placed it. It has a ‘pudding’ texture formula, which is perfectly homogenised so nails won’t be mottled or transparent, and its high level of adhesion means that no air will be captured under the nails. The new gel’s flexibility also means that nail enhancements are strong and long-lasting, and it can be used on fresh sets of nails, for sculpting and infills. Advances in laser hair removal technology
th o o Semrator p O Laser hair removal is going from strength to strength – in terms of its effectiveness and popularity. Penny Gray takes a look at recent developments…
H
air removal is certainly showing no signs of going anywhere in terms of its popularity as a treatment. The ‘hairy’ days of the Seventies are not looking like they will return any time soon, and in fact, more people are opting to go even further with their hair removal, with the Brazilian and the Hollywood becoming the norm as a preferred bikini look. Offering some sort of hair removal treatment is a must for every salon – and the great news is that the technology is getting better and better, and delivering excellent results. Waxing still remains a popular method of professional hair removal, and recent innovations have made this treatment even more comfortable and effective than ever before. However, an increasing number of people are opting for a more permanent solution, and laser is delivering incredible results on virtually everyone thanks to advances in technology. Both laser and IPL produce energy to disrupt the growth cycle of each hair follicle without damaging the surrounding skin tissue, but laser produces a single wavelength of light with a concentrated beam specifically targeting the melanin in the hair follicle. In comparison, IPL produces a broad spectrum of wavelengths at a variety of depths. Because it works on the melanin in the hair follicle, some light-based treatments may not be suitable for very fair or grey hair – but some technology is specifically developed for these trickier hair types, so check your system carefully.
22
Different lasers There are several laser technologies out there – but what do they mean? Alexandrite Laser (755nm) is used to treat fair to mid-toned skin with medium to coarse dark hair, while ND:YAG Laser (1064 nm) is used to treat darker skin types with coarse hair. Another common system is Diode Laser (800-810 nm), which is used to treat fair to mid-toned skin as well as dark fine hair. If you are a therapist looking to invest in a new system, it’s essential to look into what your system can do. Remember that light-based machines can be used for a number of treatments, including anti-ageing and hyperpigmentation, but if you intend on using your machinery primarily for hair reduction, check that it can produce the best results on as many skin and hair types as possible – or at least suit the majority of your clientele. For effective hair removal and reduction using laser, a course of treatments is always recommended, as hair goes through several stages in its lifetime. Light-based systems successfully destroy the follicle of the hairs in the growth phase – but for hairs that are already in the later phases of their life cycle, the follicles may not be destroyed and the hairs will grow back. In any session, the technology will only be successful on a small percentage of hairs, usually about 15% at a time, purely because those hairs are in the growth phase.
..................................................................................................................................................... Technology: Hair Removal
Selling in the spring The optimum time for marketing laser hair removal is in the winter or early spring, and there’s a very good reason for this. For most people, permanent hair reduction takes several treatments over many weeks to see lasting results. While having the treatment, it’s recommended that you don’t go on a sun holiday (or use sunbeds) because lightbased treatments work on the melanin in the hair – and it may be attracted by the melanin on tanned skin instead, therefore weakening the effect on the hair. In general, the paler the skin, the better when it comes to light-based hair removal. This may not be applicable on more advanced systems, so again, check what your chosen system recommends.
Mixing technologies Probably the biggest and most recent innovation in the industry has been the mixing of modalities, pioneered by Quanta Systems in its Thunder MT system, as Sarah McNulty, National Trainer at Advanced Esthetics Solutions (advancedestheticssolutions.co.uk), the distributors of Quanta Systems technology in the UK and Ireland, explains: “We found that while Diode handpieces are easy to operate for therapists, these can’t give results for all hair types, it’s not a comfortable treatment for fine hair, and it can’t treat vascular lesions
on the body – so it’s quite selective in terms of treatments it can do. We also found that you can’t isolate the wavelengths you want with the Diode as it’s very passive. “So with all this in mind, we updated our technology to offer mixed modality, which means we apply two solid, pure wavelengths to the place being treated – these wavelengths are Alexandrite and Nd:YAG. Because it’s solid, the wavelength is a lot more powerful and a lot more specific. “For the customer, this means pure treatments, faster results, and you can treat all skin types. We’re also finding that even light, fine hair achieves a 50-60% reduction. This also gets great results on hormonal hair on the face, which can be quite coarse and tough. “This mixed technology is also ideal for other treatments such as treatment blue veins, which is impossible to treat with just Nd:YAG alone – again, mixing the technologies is getting great results, we can remove them within one treatment. The mix of technologies also allows us to perform photo-rejuvenation facials in just 15 minutes.” Laser hair removal is going from strength to strength – in terms of its effectiveness and popularity. Let’s take a look at some of the latest laser systems on the market designed for permanent hair reduction...

Business: Liz McKeon.............................................................................................................................................................
Are you selling an Experience, or are you selling a Service? Business expert Liz McKeon considers The Client Service Journey
A
lot of spas and salons talk about the guest journey and rightly so. Getting this crucial process right is an essential part of business management as it focuses squarely on the customer experience in your salon. We must conduct all business planning from the client’s point of view, examining every single ‘touch-point’ they have with your business. In salon management, it is amazing how different it looks when seeing it through the client’s eyes. Repeat customers is the number one way to make money in a beauty business, so good customer experiences are the best competitive advantage of a salon. Most people think that the journey begins when the guest walks through to door. It begins way before that, from the moment they first connect with your business via the internet (whether your website or booking service) or by phone. What is your salon meet and greet procedure? Is there a friendly atmosphere in reception? The guest journey requires a detailed examination of customer service. In order to determine whether you are winning (or could do with some improvement) you need to conduct a little audit from the client’s point of view. I have created a guide here with an introduction to customer service and a check list to run through with some clear and concise questions which act as prompts. Do this today to help ensure that your customer is number one and has the very best experience when visiting your salon or spa.
My Guide to Designing Your Salon Client Service Journey:
#1. Phone • Is the phone answered quickly, accurately and professionally? • Is the booking process easy and smooth? • Are enquiries answered satisfactorily and converted to bookings?
#2. When the client shows up • What is your salon meet and greet procedure? • Is there a friendly atmosphere in reception?
#3. Consultation • Is the consultation process carried out correctly, exploring lifestyle, stress levels, personal needs and client concerns? • Does the therapist collect enough information to enable her to do a highly effective treatment? • Or, are clients details recorded at all?

What is Customer Service? Customer Service is the service provided to our customers before, during and after purchasing and using goods and services. Questions to ask yourself: 1. What experience do you hope clients will have? 2. What is the actual process? 3. What is the process of making sure they are happy?
What is your salon meet and greet procedure? Is there a friendly atmosphere in reception?
35
Business: Liz McKeon.............................................................................................................................................................
#4. Tim ing • Are services running on time?
#5. The Beauty Therapist/Stylist • Is she/he well-presented and well groomed? • Wearing your company uniform with pride and perfection? Smiling? Polite and mannerly? • Does she call the client by name? • Can she offer opinions and give recommendations? • Are your staff attentive?
#6. The service • Is the treatment room, couch and trolley perfectly ready and laid out? • Does the therapist explain the procedure thoroughly to the client? Hangers for clothes? Container for jewellery? Quality material and products used?
“When learning how to manage a salon business, it is important to keep your customer in mind”
• Does the therapist give 100% attention to the treatment and to the client? • When the treatment is finished what happens?
#7. Wrap-up • Is the client escorted back to reception? • Is the client encouraged to rebook? • Are the recommended products stylishly wrapped and placed in one of your luxury carrier bags? • And, are they escorted to the door when payment transaction is completed? By doing this, you increase your chances of getting the following results: 1. More leads from advertising. 2. Capitalise on footfall, by making the most of the clients coming through your salon. 3. By providing a more memorable experience, you create better word of mouth opportunities – still the most effective form of advertising. As a key part of your service review, consider whether the treatment room, couch and trolley are perfectly ready and laid out for when your client arrives. Think like a client: “So, how do I attract more customers to my salon and keep them coming back?” It’s amazing how different your salon looks when you are seeing it through the client’s eyes. This changes your perception and is useful to do on a regular basis, as it will help to increase the appeal of your salon to clients, resulting in repeat customers and an increase in beauty retail. Ask yourself: “How professional my salon appears to my client?” and “Would I like to come to it?...”

Business: Dave Horton............................................................................................................................................................
Treatments for clients with cancer: are you covered? Dave Horton explains how ABT members can offer therapies to clients suffering from cancer without concern. As a therapist, your client base will consist of individuals from all walks of life, some of whom are bound to be living with chronic health concerns. Offering a variety of beauty and wellness treatments can support clients through their illness, making them feel a little more like their old self, and boosting their well-being before, during, and after gruelling treatment. According to Macmillan Cancer Support, it is estimated that by 2020 almost one in two people (47%) will get cancer at some point in their lives*. If one of your clients tells you the unfortunate news that they have been diagnosed with cancer, what do you do? Can you continue to treat them? If you’re an ABT member, then the answer is yes. If you’re carrying out non-invasive treatments for your client’s well-being, which includes facials, massage, manicures and pedicures amongst others, then there is no need to be concerned. If you are not an ABT member, you should contact your insurance provider to confirm whether treating cancer patients is excluded. David Balen, of Balens Specialist Insurance Services who work with ABT to provide their members’ insurance policy, explains: “For these non-invasive treatments given for well-being, we have no exclusions in respect of cancer patients. We require that therapists are qualified, and take a case history and keep it for at least seven years, as part of professional and competent practice.” As ABT members’ insurance policy does not exclude clients suffering from cancer, this also means that you don’t have to worry if a client tells you during consultation that he or she is in remission or has been cured (however you will still need to note this in your consultation).
Specialist training It’s worth noting that if any specialist training for a therapy for treating people with cancer is available, then it would be a good idea to attend this. Any products used should be checked to see if they are safe on cancer patients as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. Your client should also consult their specialist medical practitioner, as per the guidelines provided by specialist cancer support groups etc, and you should record their consent on your client consultation form/card.
Advertising your treatments The Cancer Act 1939 (Section 4) means that it is against the law to advertise a treatment to the public claiming to cure cancer; this includes giving advice in relation to cancer treatment. You are not a medical professional, and therefore you must not imply that any of the treatments
38
........................................................................................................................................................... Business: Dave Horton
you offer will cure the disease; some of the therapies you are qualified in can assist in easing the side effects of treatments such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and help with a client’s overall feeling of well-being and self-esteem. Remember, you should only offer treatments for which you are qualified, and which are accredited by ABT and therefore covered under your ABT insurance policy. If you’re unsure, contact ABT’s policy team on 01789 773573 or email info@abtinsurance.co.uk
Massage treatments Via their website, Cancer Research UK offer advice to cancer sufferers about the types of treatments that may be beneficial in helping them to cope with the pain, discomfort and fatigue associated with cancer treatments. Amongst these, massage is recommended. Vitally, they state: “Some people worry that having a massage when you have cancer may make the cancer cells travel to other parts of the body. But no research has proved this to be true.” “For non-invasive treatments given for wellbeing, we have no exclusions in respect of cancer patients,” explains David Balen. Breast Cancer Care concur, stating online: “There is no evidence that massage can encourage breast cancer cells to spread around the body and it’s safe to have a massage even if you’re currently having treatment such as chemotherapy. In fact, massage can have many benefits for people with breast cancer.” Cancer Research UK suggest that very deep massage should be avoided, although gentler massage techniques can be helpful and pleasant. Avoid massaging areas of the body on which radiotherapyis being carried out, or where there is any broken or bruised skin. If a client’s arms or legs are swollen due to lymphoedema, you should avoid massaging them with regular massage techniques, say the charity. However, if you are a fully qualified manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage therapist, your skills can help lymphoedema
sufferers, and patients may be referred to you by a medical professional.
Hands, nails and feet Chemotherapy treatment can affect nails, making them brittle and cracked. Cuticles may become dry and sore. According to breastcancer.org, clients who have had lymph nodes under their arms removed during mastectomy or lumpectomy need to be particularly aware of nail care, as hangnails or cuts can lead to infection. Offer you client advice on natural nail, hand and foot care including regular use of a cuticle oil to keep cuticles moisturised. Consider using acetone-free polish remover, and other products that will not dry the nail plate further.
Skincare Clients undergoing treatment for cancer may find that their skin becomes drier. Therefore, you should take this into account during facial treatments; you are in the perfect position to help your client restructure their facial routines to include cleansers, exfoliators and serums for sensitive skin. You can also recommend body moisturisers that can help keep skin supple.
Brow reconstruction If your client is undergoing chemotherapy, it is likely that they will experience hair loss. The powerful drugs used to attack cancer cells also have the same effect on hair roots, and chemotherapy can cause hair on all areas of the body to fall out including eyebrows and lashes. If you have trained in make-up application, use your skills to show your client how to apply brow powders to recreate eyebrows; today’s brow products are highly advanced and help to recreate the lost hair that goes so far in framing the face.
Volunteer your skills If you would like to use your qualifications to help cancer sufferers on a wider scale, the Look Good Feel Better charity are always appealing for Beauty Volunteers. You need at least one year’s experience in skincare or the application of make-up, and be happy to deliver the charity’s Workshops and Masterclasses for women across the UK who are undergoing treatment for cancer. Business: Recruitment............................................................................................................................................................
‘ONE’ e h t g n i d n Fi
Effective recruitment can lead to the start of a beautiful relationship!
A
common concern that we often hear from business owners in the beauty and hair sectors is recruitment and staff retention. How do you attract the right beauty and hair professionals to your salon or spa, and how do ensure they settle in and stay with you? Recruitment of staff is a stressful process. It can be time consuming and sometimes expensive. For sole traders or those working in a busy salon as well as running it, the process of recruitment is absolutely necessary but perhaps isn’t give the attention it deserves. Therefore, you need to be absolutely clear on how you go about the process, the job you are trying to fill, and who you are looking to recruit. However, don’t think of recruitment as a bind, consider how attracting the right staff to your salon would propel your business forward. Attracting the very best talent, who deliver impeccable treatments, will open more opportunities for you. Speaking at January’s Phorest Salon Owners Summit 2019 (phorest.com), salon coach David Barnett (davidbarnett.org), commented: “Most of you focus on ways to make your salon stand out to the customer; but what if you switch your focus to stand out to stylists, technicians or therapists as a great place to work? What would happen is, you’d attract the top talent in your area; and the customers would naturally follow.”
You also need to find someone who understands the ethos of your business, and has values and an attitude which fit with this. “Finding good staff can be challenging but it helps to be clear on what type of person would suit the business,” says Linda Hill, founder of Linda Hill Recruitment (lindahillrecruitment.co.uk). “A good starting point is to determine the company values. Think of the promise you make to your clients on what you deliver and the promise to your staff on what you offer as an employee. When values are aligned, there tends to be a mutual respect and staff stay longer.” Helena adds: “Think about every aspect of the business and how they, as an individual, will fit in with this. Use personal experience to determine exactly what you are looking for in a person to fulfil the job role and visit competitors to see how their staff interact and engage with clients, to help you to establish the key things that are important to your business.
At the start of the recruitment process, consider just what your business needs. There’s no one job advertisement that will fit all.
“An ideal employee is someone who gets your brand from the get-go. They need to be focused, disciplined and have a can-do attitude, and while their skill set is of course important, what stands out most to us is someone who is good with people.”
“Before you begin the search be clear as to exactly what their job description will entail,” says Helena Linksy, Co-Director of Q61 nail and beauty studio (q61studio.co.uk).
Sometimes the individual’s personality can count for more than their level of qualification. Simon Hill, Owner of SESH Hairdressing (seshhairdressing.co.uk), explains:
Who are you looking for?
40
What treatment demands are you struggling to fulfil? Do you need someone fully qualified and highly experienced who can slot straight into your business, or would you prefer someone fresh out of college, or with a year’s experience, who you can mould into your perfect member of staff? Being clear at this point will save you time and money later in the recruitment process.
........................................................................................................................................................... Business: Recruitment
“I always look for individuals with a real passion for hairdressing, I need to believe that they have a love for the industry and are truly passionate about the craft. In my experience you can provide training and education to build brilliant stylists but this is only possible if they enjoy it and wholeheartedly want to be there.” Linda Hill agrees: “The biggest mistake hiring managers make is to only recruit for skill. Skills can be taught so don’t let a good candidate slip through the net because they don’t perform certain treatments or have not trained with a certain product house. Bear in mind that therapists who are fully trained in all the treatments you offer will have less career development. You will need to think of other ways to incentivise them so they have longevity with the company.”
Finding ‘the one’ Today’s recruitment marketplace is so much more varied than in the past. Gone are the days when you just popped an advert into the local newspaper or shop window, sit back and wait for the CVs to roll in. You need to make your salon stand out from the crowd as ‘the’ place to work. “Don’t limit yourself to passive recruitment by simply posting an advert and hoping for the best,” says Helena. David Barnett suggests that wording your advert cleverly to appeal to your target audience can work wonders in recruitment, not only encouraging more replies but also a better calibre of candidate, as he highlights in these examples:
Are you a skilled and creative stylist? Do you have at least 5 years’ experience? Do you enjoy working on a team and customer service? Our salon is hiring the right stylist/therapist for their exciting, expanding team. Send your resume to example@example.com and someone will contact you to schedule an interview. All applicants must have a clientele.
Are you a FUN, creative stylist looking to build an INCREDIBLE career in hair? Do you want to be part of a team that supports YOUR growth with incredible education and UNCAPPED earning potential? Do you want to be part of the FASTEST growing salon in <your area>? The most EXCITING salon in <your area> is looking for a fun, spirited stylist for their expanding team! Give <owner name> a call TODAY or stop by the salon for a chat about YOUR career!
Where to advertise Think like your therapists, and advertise your vacancy using the mediums that they interact with the most, such as social media, as Karen Thomson, Owner of KAM Hair and Body Spa (kamhairandbodyspa.co.uk), advises: “At KAM we particularly use our Facebook and Instagram platforms to promote positions at the salon, which can also be boosted/ promoted within the area. This is a great tool as it helps to target specific people in your location and you can also target the posts to people’s interests i.e. hairdressing/hairstylists etc.” Helena Linksy agrees: “Look through social media, and approach any potential candidates that have a style and image that fits your salon’s brand. CVs will help you assess qualifications and experience, but often it’s through your own research, and then the interview process, that you really get to understand a [candidate’s] personality, approach and work ethic, and they can be just as important as – if not more than – a certificate.”
When posting an advert on social media, remember to make it visual, use positive wording and be clear and concise about the job and working environment, and include a deadline date for when applications should be received. “When creating an advert or a social media post it’s so important that you think carefully about the copy and target audience,” says Karen. “You’re looking for the perfect candidate for your salon, so it’s important that you highlight all the things you would like from that candidate e.g. determined and passionate about hair and the hairdressing industry. If you’re looking for a high level stylist / therapist, it’s key that you note this in the text so that you do not have people without the right experience applying for the position and it may be worthwhile including in the copy how much experience you would like the stylist to have. “I also think it’s beneficial to include why the candidate should choose your salon, what it has to offer, how it can help develop their career and any incentives that the salon has for the candidate that may make them want to apply for the position.”

Business:Dave Horton............................................................................................................................................................
Of course, there’s no harm in using more traditional methods in addition to social media, especially if they’re low cost. Helena outlines how she undertook a successful recruitment campaign utilising her clients: “We have recently been recruiting for our new Q61 beauty salon, which opened in November in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and found that word-of-mouth and recommendations really helped us in the recruitment process. With this in mind use contacts within the industry, speak to clients and actively approach potential recruits who already have a good reputation in the area. Often they will have built up a solid client base who will be happy to follow them.”
Shortlisting your applicants It’s always the way with recruitment that you will attract applications from people not suitable for your business. Some people don’t read adverts properly, won’t be qualified or experienced to the level you require, or simply apply for every job they see advertised. So once your deadline date has passed, look through all applications and short list your favourites; you may have a shortlist of half a dozen, or just one or two, depending on the quality of applicants. Always refer to the job description / criteria that you established at the start of the process, and try not to get distracted by anything irrelevant. At this point in the process it might be worth getting a second opinion from someone who knows your business. Ask someone you trust to read your job description, and then your applications, and short list those which match and invite them for an interview.
The interview process It’s a misconception that interviews are only for employers to decide whether a candidate is suitable. Interviews are two-way processes; prospective employees will be judging you and your business as much as you are judging whether they are suitable. No one wants to work in an environment that they feel uncomfortable in, or have a boss that they don’t get on with, so it’s important at the interview stage that you ‘sell’ your salon to candidates in the most positive way. “While it’s crucial you find a candidate that fits your brand, your salon and your expectations, they won’t be happy unless they feel it’s a fit that works for them too,” says Helena. Make the interview more interactive than simply working through the candidate’s CV. Show an interest in their hobbies and activities out of work, and you will gain a better insight into an individual’s personality than just discussing qualifications. It’s also vital to discover their long-term career objectives. “It is important to find out what their career goals are. If someone only wants to work in your salon for a year or two before travelling for example, you have to ask if this is beneficial to you and it may be worth your while to select another candidate,” suggests Simon.
42
Make sure you are well prepared for questions that the candidate may have for you; be clear about the salary you are offering, incentives such as bonuses and commissions, career progression and training opportunities, working hours, and holiday entitlements etc. Don’t promise anything that you can’t or aren’t willing to deliver.
The skills test In industries where practical ability is paramount, carrying out a skills test is a useful tool to ascertain whether a therapist or hairdresser has the level of skill you require, regardless of what their CV may say. Offer a skills test to your final one or two candidates, rather than your full shortlist. Ask trusted friends or clients if they would help you out as a model, and request candidates perform standard treatments that you would expect them to complete competently at their skill level, such as massage, a facial or manicure. Importantly, observe the treatment. You need to see the therapist at work and hear how they interact with clients. “An ideal employee is someone who gets your brand from the get-go. They need to be focused, disciplined and have a can-do attitude, and while their skill set is of course important, what stands out most to us is someone who is good with people,” says Helena. “In a customer-focused business, client retention is key, and personality plays a huge part in establishing and retaining clients, so for us, it’s key that we know from the start that someone will be able to deal with clients – the good and the bad – effectively and confidently.” Remember to take into account the candidate’s nerves, so don’t expect perfection, but look for skills that you can polish to your level. Observe them and think, ‘is this person representing what my business stands for?’
The job offer When you’ve interviewed and carried out skills tests, you should have a good understanding of whether an individual will fit in with your business requirements and you would like to work with them. It’s good practice to contact unsuccessful shortlisted candidates to let them know; a simple email will suffice and enable them to pursue other opportunities. When you have chosen your preferred candidate, it’s fine to make the job offer by telephone, but follow this up with a written offer of employment. Agree a start date, and look forward to welcoming your new member of staff. Next issue: So, you’ve found your perfect employee, but how do you keep them? We look at retaining your most valued members of staff.

ABT accredit MASCED skin cancer detection programme T
he MASCED (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) Programme has been accredited by ABT, enabling ABT members to gain accredited training in detecting early warning signs of skin cancer.
year. Melanoma, the deadliest form of the disease is now one of the biggest killing cancers in 15 to 34-year olds, and 1 in 54 people in the UK will be diagnosed with melanoma during their lifetime.
The programme was designed, developed and launched in January 2018 by national melanoma and skin cancer charity, Skcin, with the aim of harnessing the power of professionals across the hair, health and beauty industries who have regular, close observation of their clients’ skin. By training them how to identify the early signs of skin cancer, this can aid early diagnosis and treatment and improve prognosis and saving lives.
Early diagnosis and treatment, particularly when it comes to melanoma, is vital for survival, yet ignorance regarding the early signs and symptoms remains widespread.
Dave Horton, MD of ABT, says: “We are delighted to accredit the MASCED course to enable ABT members to gain accredited training in detecting early warning signs of skin cancer. We know that our members – beauty therapists and hair professionals – build a very personal and intimate relationship with their clients and are therefore ideally placed to spot suspicious lesions on the skin and feel confident to signpost their clients to seek a professional opinion from their GP. We therefore urge all ABT members to participate in the MASCED programme to add an extra level of client care to their services.” Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common and fastest rising cancer in the UK with over 100,000 cases reported each
The majority of non-melanoma skin cancers occur on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, neck and scalp, whilst melanoma, can appear anywhere on the body. Often lesions arise in areas, clients cannot see themselves and with the vast majority of people simply unaware of what to look out for, skin cancers are far too often going undetected, for far too long. The MASCED accreditation has seen phenomenal success in its first year, with over 7,500 hair, health and beauty industry professionals already signed up to the training programme and 98% rating it 5 stars. Claire Dale, Campaign Manager for MASCED comments: “We have been overwhelmed by the success of the MASCED programme and are absolutely delighted by the five-star feedback we receive every day. The level of interest and support we receive proves that Skcin are not only fulfilling our charitable objectives, but we are filling a mammoth void that exists in this arena, that will no doubt save lives.”
Marie Tudor of Skcin adds: “In addition to the early detection of skin cancer, the MASCED programme has also been developed to raise awareness of the importance of Sun Safety to aid the prevention of around 86% of melanoma and the majority of all skin cancer cases. This supports the call by public health figures for a wider perspective on who is most effective to help improve the nation’s health and address concerns raised in the Government’s 2020 Skin Cancer Vision. At Skcin we strongly believe that offering this valuable training to the estimated 250,000 people working across the hair, health and beauty industry, will can really take a stand against this deadly and devastating disease.” The MASCED training is available to industry professionals for a nominal fee of just £20. For this, individuals receive their MASCED training guide and resources via post, as well as access to comprehensive, quality, online resources, the accreditation e-course and their personalised certificate of accreditation.
To join the thousands of UK industry professionals already accredited, you can register to take part or find out more at MASCED.UK

Business: Micropigmentation..................................................................................................................................................
Make it Permanent How to succeed as a Micropigmentation Artist Micropigmentation, Microblading and Scalp Micropigmentation are becoming increasingly mainstream, with salons and clinics offering a range of brow, lip, eyeliner and scalp treatments, as well as practitioners who specialise in medical reconstructive procedures. Fancy getting into this lucrative and creative sector of the beauty industry? We spoke to two Micropigmentation experts for some advice… “As a result, this is now raising cause for concern for many councils who are now refusing to issue licences to those who show a poor course syllabus. In my eyes this is a step forward. The publicity of poor work and tattoo disasters can have a bad effect on everybody in the industry and the best way to try and avoid such mishaps is to offer good quality training where students can be continually mentored and not just being certificated on attendance. “The adage, pay cheap – pay twice, comes to mind. We find that students who have been sold the fast track route are re-paying to attend a more complete and detailed course with us due to lack of confidence from not learning essential information and techniques.”
What you should expect from your training
Tracy Fensome, Permanent Cosmetics & Medical Practitioner and Trainer.
“Not everyone is suitable for this industry as it requires a keen eye for detail with dedication and tenacity to perfect the skills. Not only this, the investment must be considered. Pay cheap you can end up paying 10 times over to gain the right skills and support. A successful Micropigmentation Artist needs to ensure that the quality and length of training is of a high standard and provides qualifications ideally such as VTCT and ITEC. “Over the last few years we have seen an influx of Permanent Makeup and Microblading short courses being offered, some of which are as little as just two days for students with no previous experience. What is also worrying is that some of these training companies have trainers who have very little experience themselves with no teaching qualification. You’ve got to ask yourself what kind of outcome you are going to have by learning something that covers a wide range of topics, such as colour theory, drawing and measuring, different types of needles, medical conditions etc… in just two days? It just is impossible.
44
“Ensure the course is comprehensive with over 120 hours with pre-study, theory and practical hours in training. A Micropigmentation course should be a minimum five days plus and Microblading three days-plus days. There should be lots of opportunity to work on models overseen with the trainer to consolidate the fundament skills. Assessment should be completed after the learner has met the training company’s set standards and completed all case study models. This can take from three to six months. “In my 25 years of teaching, courses for beginners need to include ample practical ‘hands-on’ with a trainer learner ratio of 1:1. at the most 1:2. Class sizes can vary from 2-10. Ask yourself what type of teaching you want from a class. Some learners thrive and perform better in a team environment and others want to just focus on learning with a trainer overseeing everything they do. The numbers will vary from different training providers. We tend to work with no more than two to three on any beginner training course. “As a beginner expect to learn eyebrows, eyeliner and lips for the full Micropigmentation course and just Brows for the Microblading. A structured course will concentrate on these key fundamentals to ensure the learner works safely, hygienically and with precision. Be careful of those courses that offer free giveaways included in the training to entice you in. For example, offering extra skills to be included in the training i.e. Latino liner, areola, camouflage, learn three types of tools etc. These are advanced skills and should be left for when the learner is qualified and experienced.

Gina Hutchings, Marketing Director and blogger.
“Marketing your business and developing your brand can be daunting. How do you know if the look and feel of your business is appealing to others and if it will stand the test of time?
Do your research & ask questions “The course must be recognised and be insurable. Check this before you part with your money. Certification is normally in the training provider’s name or in a recognised government awarding body qualification such as VTCT or ITEC, which are recognised internationally. To gain the VTCT or ITEC, the learner will need to attend a training provider that is an Accredited Centre offering these qualifications. The learner should carefully consider the future and having a VTCT or ITEC Level 4 certification may be very beneficial in the future if this becomes mandatory to perform such procedures. “Support is key to learners’ development and checking progress of case studies. There may be ongoing questions that need answering. Is the trainer going to be available or an associate at the company when needed. Can you return to the trainer if troubleshooting is needed? We offer weekly feedback of learner’s work, telephone, email, free mentor days back at the academy, social media private community and students’ login to FAQ video demos. If any of these are not being offered then I would question the integrity of the training company. “Ask questions about the trainers’ skills, how long in the industry, how many procedures have they completed, what support and mentoring is available. It is good to put a name to a face so look on websites or blogs to see who the trainer is. “Do some due diligence and look up the training company reviews on Google and Facebook. Ask to speak to previous learners about the company from point of booking through to support. Did they deliver the promises or mission statement? We also recommend visiting the academy and getting to meet the trainers if possible. We offer free taster sessions for beginners to come along and find out more about the options, career pathways, earning potential, equipment, funding etc. “Look at students’ work, i.e. pictures, Facebook, Instagram. It obviously will not be perfect as a beginner, but it should provide you with a good idea to the standards be taught and the training.” Tracy Fensome is a Permanent Cosmetics and Medical Practitioner, and founder of PMU UK Ltd & Signature Academy Ltd (www.signatureacademy.co.uk).
“It is less daunting and more manageable if you begin with the basics. Who are you trying to attract? Define you target audience, those you want to get through the door. Are they repeat clients, those who would refer your business, are they male/female, their age range, interests and so on. Make a ‘persona’ of two or three people you would like as clients including what you think they like and do in their spare time. Are they mature and busy working mums looking for an alternative to a daily makeup routine or young adults looking for the latest trend in ombre brows? “Using the personas, you can create your niche and find the means of targeting the people you want to attract.”
Build your portfolio “You are used to building a portfolio of your qualifications and it is good to get in the habit of continuing this in your professional work. Before and after snaps are a great weapon in your marketing arsenal. People like to see real results and a variety of people not to mention evidence that you have done the procedure before. “Keep a steady stream of photos of your clients rather than sharing them all at once.”
Collaborate “Do not be afraid of other businesses in your local area. One key way to get your brand known is to collaborate. Approach other businesses that you think your niche market may use such as hairdressers, nail technicians or clothing boutiques. Co-advertising and promotion not only halve the costs but can work as a great referral stream.”
Promote loyalty over discounts “Over use of discounts can cheapen your business. Instead look to offer clients rewards for loyalty. You can offer a package price for more than one treatment or special price for those who refer friends. “The industry is forever advancing and so should your business. Follow the latest trends and ask you clients for feedback. They knowledge and market insight will allow you to define your own brand and direction of your business.” Gina Hutchings is a Marketing Director at a UK full service agency, WAS (www.wsacommunications.co.uk). She also runs the blog www.thetreatmenttester.co.uk and specialises in marketing for the aesthetics industry.

Training: Continuing Professional Development.......................................................................................................................
The love of learning What to consider when choosing a CPD training provider. s a professional, you’ll understand the importance of keeping your skills up to date. However, when you attend workshops or training days, or organise in-salon training for your team, there’s so much more to consider than just which subject you want to study.
A
“Training should be an inspiring and informative experience and something that should be repeated regularly,” advises Marie-Louise Coster, therapist and founder of All About Mi Beauty Therapy & Training School. “Whether learning something new or updating and refreshing skills we have it is only the naïve therapist that thinks their initial training at college is enough to keep them ahead of the game and make them the very best therapist they can be.” “Whether you are running your own salon, selfemployed or building up your business, investing in training and development can help to future proof both you and your business,” explains Alan Woods OBE, CEO of VTCT. “Education should be seen as a tool to progress a person’s career that can be used to reap the rewards at every level, and once initial training, such as an apprenticeship, is complete, then the learning should not stop but rather be pursued and encouraged at every opportunity.” He continues: “The hair and beauty sector is going from strength to strength, adding an estimated £7.1bn to the UK economy yearly, and the demand for treatments and styling is only going up. There is therefore no better time to invest in diversifying your team’s skill set to be able to offer additional services and help your business to flourish and enhance your unique selling. “However, on the job learning alone might not be enough to provide you with what is needed to retain good staff that are eager to learn more and enhance their skills. Everyone learns in different ways and understanding the options, and that learning does not just stop after formal education is complete, can make sure that your team benefits from the wide range of courses that are available, and are able to develop both personally and professionally.”
46
Education, or Continuing Professional Development (CPD), shouldn’t only be considered useful for your dayto-day work now, it can have a much longer-term result. “Looking back at where I started, training gave me the drive to move forward in a new career. Just like I did with my career path, there’s the potential to become an educator, distributor, or manufacturer,” says Susan Gerrard of Gerrard International and founder of The Susan Gerrard Beauty Academy. So how do you choose the best place for you to study?
Level & quality of qualifications “When looking for an academy, there are so many things you should take into consideration,” says Leigh Kerr, Director of Rainbow Room International Academy. “Firstly, you should look at if the academy has an advanced development programme and if any of the courses the academy offers are right for you and the qualification you are looking to achieve.” You should also look out for training schools and courses that are accredited, or backed by the leading industry bodies, as Marie-Louise explains: “If the course you enrol on is not properly accredited you won’t be able to gain insurance, therefore you won’t be able to offer the treatment and the whole expense and exercise would have been pointless. Check that the course and training provider are accredited with the likes of ABT and that your insurance company will accept the qualification and cover you for insurance purposes. “Some companies are very clever with their wording, so if you aren’t sure ask them to clarify who they are accredited by and check with that accreditor that they are in fact accredited.” You can check whether a course is accredited by ABT by contacting our accreditation team at tamzin@abtinsurance.co.uk. You can also find ABTAccredited Training Providers using the online tool on the ABT website.

How much will the course cost Don’t be swayed by the cost of a course; the old adage ‘you get what you pay for’ certainly applies to education. A course should represent value for money, but opting for the cheapest may leave you non the wiser when it comes to implementing the skills you wanted to learn in a salon environment. Marie-Louise offers some advice: “Although cost is probably going to be the main influencing factor please do not let it be the only factor when making your choice. The cheapest option is not always the best option, equally I acknowledge that it may not always be the worst. The most important factor when choosing a training provider is researching exactly what is covered in the course. Often a cheaper course may be shorter in length and therefore there isn’t as much content to the course. It is usually a case that the practical hours are sacrificed so you don’t get to practise the skill as many times – and as we are a practical industry the more practise we have during training the more confident and proficient we will be in doing the treatment – in turn making the treatment more successful. “Don’t be afraid to contact the training provider and ask them exactly what is covered in the course to ensure that it will meet your needs – they will be more than happy to help.”
have a whole section about their staff – if not ask them what experience they have. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions if necessary, you are investing a lot in them and need to be sure you are making the right choice.” Leigh agrees: “It’s incredibly important to make sure the academy you are looking at is reputable – do people know about it, is it awardwinning or has it produced any industry talent or mentored any top stylists?”
The course location If you’re committing to a longer-term course, the location of the training school or college may be high on your list of priorities. Some people don’t mind travelling if they’re attending a course they really enjoy, but if you’re the sort of person who doesn’t like to drive far, or can’t face long journeys on public transport, this should be a consideration for you. Take into account whether the traveling time would fit into your other daily commitments, such as work or childcare. Investing in a course is not just about spending money, it’s about investing your time and only you know how much of that you can spare.
Educators’ credentials “The experience of the person teaching you is also a factor that should be high on your list when choosing your training provider,” says Marie-Louise. “You are going to learn so much more from someone who has a wealth of experience and knowledge. On the training school’s website, they may well
“Training should be an inspiring and informativeexperience and something that should be repeatedregularly,” says beauty educator Marie-Louise Coster.
48
Education should be something you embrace as an individual, and encourage as a salon owner or manager. There is no end to learning; every course, workshop or seminar you attend will have a benefit, and if you choose wisely, can open doors to enhanced career opportunities and business success.
