Homemade Facial Masks That Work by Jayna Davis Nothing says beauty-pampering like kicking your heels back with a cold glass of lemonade, a good book, and a nice, skin-enriching face mask. There are a lot of facial mask products available on the market, but if you want to save a little bit of money, creating a homemade facial mask is as easy as finding a facial mask recipe, and setting aside a few minutes to create the mixture. You could use a lot of different ingredients, and you can find most of them in your kitchen. With an open mind and a few moments of your time, making something like an oatmeal facial mask or even a kitty litter facial mask, can cost you absolutely nothing. The Infamous Kitty Litter Facial The thought of smearing your face with the same stuff the cat does its business in might be a little tough to swallow at first, but as it turns out, pure clay varieties of kitty litter are made from bentonite – the same kind of clay used for facial masks in high-priced spas. Bentonite clay is great for all skin types and is full of nutrients and minerals that both exfoliate, hydrate, and nourish the skin. If you’re going to buy this stuff at beauty stores though, it’s likely to cost a bit of a pretty penny. When you make your very own kitty litter facial mask though, you’re pretty much guaranteed the same effect, at a tiny fraction of the cost. This homemade facial mask recipe is one of the easiest kinds to make; all you need to do is take a few tablespoons of kitty litter (make sure you buy one that lists pure clay as it’s only ingredient) , mix it with a little water (if you want, you can steep some rose petals or green teabags in the water first, for a little extra nourishing power), and some olive oil (or whatever essential oil you’d prefer to use), apply it to your face, leave it on for ten to fifteen minutes, and then wash it off. If you’re feeling creative, you can combine this mix with other ingredients as well; aloe vera, for example, gives this particular kind of facial mask the added benefit of soothing the skin from sunburn or windburn. Of course, I’ll have to assume that the unused stuff would be used rather than the stuff that Puss already went potty in. After all, pee might have cleansing ammonia in it, and poop might have all kinds of nutrients, but let’s be honest, putting that on your face is still really, really gross. If you want a quick spa experience without having to break the bank or even get out of the house, a kitty litter facial mask may be just the kind of facial mask for you. For those of you who are still a little squeamish about using cat litter, there are a lot of other kinds of facial mask recipes to try. Oatmeal Mask Recipe One of the most common ingredients to use to make a homemade facial mask is oatmeal. Oatmeal is great for any skin type; it exfoliates and cleanses the skin naturally and gently,

http://shortcutit.com/Makeup_Issuu while the properties in the oatmeal itself restores the skin’s moisture balance and soothes irritations and redness. One oatmeal facial mask recipe that’s great for any skin type is one that only needs a tablespoon of oatmeal or oatmeal powder, an egg white, and a few drops of lemon oil. All you need to do mix all of these ingredients together, adjusting the proportions to your needs, and then spreading the whole thing on your face. Keep the mask on until the mixture is completely dry; this usually takes around twenty minutes to an hour. Afterwards, just rinse it all off, and enjoy the softness and smoothness of your skin. There are a lot of other facial mask recipes you can try, and most of the ingredients can usually be found in the kitchen. In fact, sometimes, if you still have a bit of facial mask mixture left over after having applied it to your face, it could serve as a delicious and healthy snack, like this banana-yogurt-honey mixture. For this particular facial mask recipe, all you need is half a banana, a couple of tablespoons of yogurt, and one tablespoon of honey. Mash the banana into a paste using a fork (or whatever else you might have on hand) and mix in the honey and the yogurt. Apply it to your face and leave the mixture on for around fifteen minutes to half an hour. Afterwards, simply wipe it off with a washcloth or rinse it all off with some cool water. This recipe not only rejuvenates, moisturizes, and softens the skin; it’s literally good enough to eat! There are a lot of facial mask recipes like this, and whether it’s an oatmeal facial mask, a kitty litter facial mask, or even a banana one, rest easy in the fact that they’re really simple to make. Skincare doesn’t always have to make a person break the bank; creating a homemade facial mask can be as simple as looking into the fridge.

Give Yourself A Pedicure At Home by Jayna Davis Good foot hygiene should be a given for any person, male or female. But not everybody has the time, inclination, or cash to go to a salon or pedicure parlor just so some stranger can mess around with their feet. If you’re a tightwad like me, and don’t want to bother paying for something that can easily be done in the comfort of your own home; you’re in luck. Getting an at home pedicure doesn’t really require much training. If you have the right tools and a little bit of time, you could easily give yourself a pedicure. There are a few things you’ll need to enjoy a complete at home pedicure. Soap and warm water, acetone, lotion, acetone, nail polish, foot powder, a nail cutter and nail file, a pumice stone and a nail brush, some cotton balls, and a basin big enough to serve as a footbath. All of these things can usually be found around the house, but if you find yourself short on a couple of things, all you need to do is pop over to the nearest drug store; all of these supplies are usually available there. Pampering your tootsies can actually take a number of steps. The first step is to soften them up. Find a comfy chair, pour some warm, soapy water into that washbasin, and soak them for about five minutes. This’ll soften your toenails and whatever calluses you might have, making them a lot easier to deal with. Replacing the soap in your water with some Epsom salt and some essential oils can not only give your feet an extra boost, but you get the added benefit of getting a room that smells totally luxe. After softening your feet up though, soak some of your cotton with acetone and remove any nail polish you have from your toenails. Acetone or any other form of nail polish remover can be really drying to the nail and the skin around it, so keep the dryness at bay by dabbing a bit of olive oil or lotion to your cuticles before breaking out the nail polish remover. When you’ve gotten all the nail polish out of your toenails, trim them and file them to keep them short and healthy. Make sure that the rest of your feet are clean by getting between your toes and down on your heels with the pumice stone and the nailbrush. When that’s done, soak your feet again for some extra pampering. Dry your feet completely and then slather your feet and ankles with some extra-rich lotion. To keep those tootsies from getting stinky, dust some foot powder between your toes and if you want to go to bare, you’re good to go from there. In my personal opinion though, no at home pedicure is complete without a layer of bright-colored nail polish. Apply a base coat, wait for it to dry, paint on the nail polish color of your choice, and put on the topcoat. A good pampering can be a lot cheaper and easier to get that you expect. It’s pretty easy to give yourself a pedicure if you want one. All you need to do is make the time for it.

Mineral Makeup – Do Bare Escentuals & Pur Minerals Work? by Jayna Davis In Ancient Rome and Egypt, a lot of the cosmetics that people used contained poisonous substances, like lead and mercury. Of course, nowadays, we don’t voluntarily smear poisonous substances on our skins just to alter our appearances. …Or do we? Did you know that some cosmetics contain synthetic –and potentially toxic- ingredients that could irritate the skin? Awareness of this has created a demand for makeup made with more natural ingredients, and mineral makeup, or bare minerals makeup, has filled in to address this issue. Common mineral makeup brands, like Pur Minerals, have several different makeup types, like mineral foundations and lip gloss, and one of the draws for bare minerals makeup is that they are often touted as performing a dual role; not just to enhance or alter a person’s appearance, but to nourish the skin or relieve skin conditions like adult cystic acne as well. Makeup is a term used to refer to colored products applied to a person’s skin in order to change their appearance. These changes can be as tiny and insignificant as a touch of mineral foundation to even out your skin tone, or as drastic as an elaborately applied array of cosmetics meant to change your look so thoroughly that you’ll almost look like an entirely different person. Most people turn to more conventional kinds of makeup to fulfill these functions, but there has been a growing trend of going back to the basics and buying bare minerals makeup. Of course, when I use the term “going back to the basics,” I don’t mean that the nasty toxic stuff, like mercury and lead have made a comeback as cosmetics ingredients. Ancient Romans and Ancient Egyptians may have gotten a few things right, like sewage systems and really cool-looking infrastructure, but identifying the toxicity of their cosmetics was clearly not their forte. Mineral makeup, on the other hand, uses gentler ingredients; minerals from earth, made without any of the synthetic ingredients, like chemicals and dyes that go into most traditional kinds of makeup. There are a lot of different brands of pure mineral makeup, and they come in a lot of different makeup types; just as there are a lot of different kinds of makeup users. Some people would swear by pure mineral makeup and wouldn’t change out their mineral foundations for all the freebies in the world, and there are those who would roundly denounce mineral makeup as terrible products; even going so far as to call this kind of makeup a sham. Both parties do have their valid points. On one hand, mineral makeup has been criticized as nothing more than a clever marketing scheme, since most traditional brands of makeup use pretty much the same ingredients. Some also claim that a lot of mineral makeup brands don’t carry shades or colors that fit some customers’ skin types. Then again, the same can be said about practically all the other makeup brands anyway. Some people also claim that mineral makeup has a tendency to dry out skin and aggravate certain skin conditions, and that it can actually accentuate wrinkles, rather than conceal them; making a person look years older.

6
http://shortcutit.com/Makeup_Issuu There are also those who claim that the colors of most kinds of mineral makeup have a slightly ashy undertone that looks particularly unflattering on certain skin types, such as those with yellow undertones to their skin. On the other hand, mineral makeup fans say that pure mineral makeup is great for a person’s skin. The purer, synthetics-free formulations of mineral makeup, which don’t contain dyes, fragrances, binders, or preservatives, are said to be great for people who have sensitive skin, allergies, acne, or rosacea. Many also say that mineral makeup can give a person’s skin a special kind of “glow” that traditional kinds of makeup can’t replicate. On top of that, mineral makeup is said to last a lot longer than other kinds of makeup, and is non-comedogenic –which means that it won’t clog your pores and aggravate acne conditions or cause rosacea flare-ups. Another point in mineral makeup’s favor is the fact that most pure mineral makeup brands have an SPF rating of at least 15, because most of these kinds of makeup contain a fair amount of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you can march off to the beach without slathering on the sunscreen though; while mineral makeup is certainly better than nothing, using usual cream sun-block is still the best way to protect yourself from the sun’s potentially harmful rays. An example of a brand of pure mineral makeup that has SPF is Pur Minerals, a popular line of mineral makeup and skin care products that not only use all-natural minerals to make their products, but often add other natural ingredients, like shea butter and aloe vera to help bind the product and nourish the skin. Mineral foundations, concealers, moisturizers, lip-gloss, and even eyeliner and facial wash are part of this particular brand’s line, and many reviewers claim that Pur Minerals is a pretty good brand of mineral makeup to try out, for first-timers.

Pucker Up With Lip Plumpers by Jayna Davis Collagen injections don’t have to be the only way for a girl to get fuller lips. If you don’t want to have to go through the hassle of an expensive –and potentially very painful- cosmetic procedure, you can buy your fuller lips right over the counter. That’s right. Get plumped with to die for lips without the pain and have it in a simple swipe! In a nutshell, plumpers are lip-gunk – cosmetic products people apply to their lips just like lipstick, lip gloss and lip balm. The difference however between lip plumpers and all of these other kinds of lip product is that applying a lip plumper can actually make your lips fuller, not just make them look fuller. Now there’s a definitive word: MAKE your lips fuller. Sigh…the magic of cosmetics. The blessing of modern invention. Anybody whose vanity lies on their lips but is scared to death of syringes or is broke in cash, can now sleep in peace knowing that there is a simple yet effective solution to their beauty dream. Just like the name suggests, lip plumpers actually make your lips well… plumper. They’re great for that just-kissed, pouty effect. That kind of look can drive the boys and girls if you wish so, absolutely wild! Katie Perry hasn’t said it any better when she sang “I Kissed A Girl”. There’s a reason why so many girls try to look like Angelina Jolie nowadays. Those full lips, coupled with that killer bod, have helped catapult her to the Hollywood A-List. If I’d have to say so, her lips got famous before she did. Sort of like the actress with the awesome lips. And they got her Brad Pitt too, which is a great plus! Of course, for some people, Jolie-grade lips might not be possible without cosmetic surgery, but lip plumpers can give you the chance for the same kind of alluring pout. Then you can feel like Angelina Jolie every single day! In most cases, lip plumpers make your kisser more kissable with ingredients that “irritate” the skin on your lips. No worries though! This isn’t as bad as it sounds. This is so because the skin on our lips is actually much more delicate than the skin on the rest of our face. This is a wake up call too. The way we care about the delicate skin around our eyes should also be extended to our lips. What makes lip plumpers work? You might ask. They usually contain ingredients like camphor and menthol, and aside from giving your lips that fun, tingly feeling, they also make blood rush to your lips, causing them to swell and making them fuller and smoother. Ooh tempting! Lip plumpers can also make your lips feel softer giving your lips a nice nutrient boost that can help prevent peeling and chapping. Most of the time, plumpers can be applied the same way people apply lip gloss or lip balm – using a wand applicator with a fun, fuzzy tip; with your fingers, directly form the tube, or with a lipstick brush. This kind of cosmetic product can come in a clear gloss, tinted, or even opaque, giving your already fuller lips a punch of color to match the rest of your makeup. Some of the sheerer kinds of lip plumpers can be applied right before you apply your lipstick. There are a lot of different kinds of lip plumpers available commercially, and they can range in price from five dollars to one hundred dollars. It’s up to you how far you’re willing to splurge. They’re available in in department stores, most drug stores, and online. Just a dose of reality though. Not all lip plumpers work. Lip plumpers’ active ingredients aren’t always that effective on some people. Meanwhile, those with especially sensitive skin

http://shortcutit.com/Makeup_Issuu might actually get itchy or cracked lips, and some products might not react with some individuals’ unique body chemistry. As with other beauty products, what works for some may not be true to others. So, if you want to make sure that you have the right kind of lip plumper especially for you, it’ll be a good idea to test it before you pucker up.

Brow Makeover Time! by Jayna Davis Let us talk about eyebrows. I honestly believe that a perfectly groomed eyebrows can enhance your facial features and will definitely define your look. It balances your features and frames your eyes. Even if your make up looks beautiful on you, if you have bushy eyebrows, then it will just ruin the whole look. Some people are born with thick dark eyebrows while others are born with thin, small eyebrows and you just have to work with what you have. Eyebrows do not just define your face but it also protects your eyes from sweat or raindrops so it will not go straight into the eyes. There are a lot of ways to groom your eyebrows depending on your threshold for pain. You can have it waxed, all the pain in just one strip. Of course you have to be really careful with waxing because you do not want to end up with no eyebrows at all. It is best if a professional does this instead of you doing it yourself. For those who can stand the pain and have a lot of time in their hands, plucking and tweezing can be done to shape those eyebrows. Threading it is also an option. More people choose this option because unlike tweezing the hair one by one, this can take a few strands of hair all at once and it can also remove the hair up to the roots. It is a little bit painful at first but once you get used to it, it will get better. If you are lazy to go to a salon to get waxed, plucked or get a threading and you cannot stand the pain, you can also just buy an eyebrow shaver and shave away. The downside to this is that the hair will grow thicker and it will be more visible when it is growing. If you are going to groom your eyebrows yourself, remember one thing. DO NOT OVER PLUCK. It is better to under pluck than over pluck. If you over pluck and end up with weird looking thin eyebrows, you will regret it and have to live with potentially ugly consequences. Hair takes awhile to grow and you will have to live with thin brows (which could make you look manly or washed out) for awhile. Having thin eyebrows will make you look older than you are. Now, let me share with you how you can shape your eyebrows at home. It is quite easy and I am sure you will be able to do it on your own. For this step by step guideline, I will use the plucking/tweezing technique. What you will need: • • • • •
Mirror that magnifies your face Angled tweezers Cosmetic scissors A brow brush (an old mascara wand will work too) A pencil or thin make up brush

Ice or numbing cream (To be put before plucking, for those who are sensitive to pain)
Steps: 1. Know your face shape* to figure out what kind of eyebrows will suit you. If you have an OVAL shape face, the perfect brow shape is a soft angled shape (Grace Kelly). For those with HEART shaped faces (Gwyneth Paltrow), a low arch, round brow will define your face. Those with LONG faces (Denise Richards) will look good with a flat eyebrow shape while those with ROUND faces (Jennifer Aniston) look better with a high arched brow. Those with SQUARE faces (Cameron Diaz) look better with angled thick brows while those with DIAMOND faces (Halle Berry) look good with curved eyebrows. 2. With the mascara brush or eyebrow brush, brush the hair upwards and then with cosmetic scissors, trim any hairs that are longer than the natural shape of your eyebrows. 3. Hold your pencil or make up brush vertically from the outer most corner of your nose and to the inner eye. Mark it so you would remember where it falls. Pluck any stray hair that is outside of the line. 4. Again, take the pencil, look straight on the mirror and from the edge of the nose, angle it across the iris. It should be right below the innermost circle in the middle of the eye. Again, mark it with an eyebrow pencil. This is where the arch of the eyebrow should be. 5. Tilt the pencil until the corner of the eye from the corner of the nose and this is where the eyebrows should end. Any hair exceeding this will be plucked. And there you go. That is how you can shape your eyebrows. This tip also helps when putting on make up. Remember that it is still advisable that you go to a professional to get your eyebrows shaped and just do the grooming at home once you have gotten a hold with the shape of your eyebrows. Also, remember the cardinal rule, DO NOT OVER PLUCK. It is very hard to fix this.

Top Winter Moisturizers by Jayna Davis With winter weather approaching on the horizon, even the softest, most supple skin will be tempted with dryness. The winter season does the most damage to your skin, and has the potential to leave your skin lizard-like for the New Year. Moisturizing is important year round, but especially so during the harsh winter months. It’s important to realize the difference between a summer moisturizer and a winter moisturizer. Summer moisturizers tend to be lighter, easier for layering under makeup and more “sweat proof” during the warmer parts of the year. Winter calls for thicker, more drenching moisturizers. Moisturizers can be found at a variety of prices in drugstores, makeup counters and online. 1.
Cetaphil . Cetaphil is a popular moisturizer that can be found easily at drugstore or ordered online. This moisturizer is extremely affordable, yet totally effective. The Cetaphil formula is fantastic because it is made for sensitive skin. Cetaphil is also available in an SPF formula, ideal since sun-protection is just as important during the chilly months. Cetaphil can be found online or in drugstores. Slather this cream on before bed to let it really seep down into your skin and hydrate well. The next morning you can follow up by applying a thin moisturizer before your makeup, just to seal in all that hydrated goodness you did the evening before.
2. Pro-X Clear UV Moisturizer — SPF 15. Olay is obviously a well-known brand in the skincare industry. Olay has developed this moisturizer that will keep your skin well hydrated throughout the winter months, and is this enough to wear underneath makeup daily. I also really love the fact that it already has SPF 15 in it, enabling you to skip a step in your makeup application process! This Olay moisturizer can be ordered online or found in store.
3. Kate Somerville Deep Tissue Repair Cream with Peptide KB. This deep tissue repair cream is the queen of moisturizers. While restoring natural hydrants in your skin, this cream will also prevent wrinkles and dramatically change the texture of your skin. This cream is suitable for all skin types and absorbs very quickly into the skin. While this cream appears to be quite a splurge, it’s effects are far worth the price it costs. This cream is available for purchase online and also in Sephora stores. The true key to keeping your skin soft and loveable during the winter months is routine. By keeping a strict beauty routine and applying your moisturizer daily, you will replenish the skin effortlessly and not have to makeup for all the damage. Along with your routine, try to add a couple more glasses of water to your diet. Water replenishes the skin from the inside out and will really help with dryness and the overall look of the complexion. Forsaking SPF during the winter months is a huge temptation, since we don’t think we are in the sun as often. Truthfully, lots of damage is done during the winter months if we choose not to hydrate and

http://shortcutit.com/Makeup_Issuu protect our skin! Though the effects of damaged skin may now show over night, they will show as the years progress. Like the damage takes years, the prevention takes years as well, Think of the restoration/ hydration process as a journey rather than a destination. Be glad in what your skin could look like, and what it does, and don’t get discouraged! During the day-to-day schedule, life gets busier and busier and things that appear to be little and insignificant like moisturizing daily seem to disappear off our of schedules.By caring for your skin during these winter months, you can approach spring with lively, more vibrant skin that is well hydrated and beautiful!

Top Holiday Manicures by Jayna Davis With the holidays approaching quickly, every woman finds herself in a fury preparing for that special holiday party. The combination of hectic schedules and overly-pricey salons often result in abandoned, bare nails. This year, try one of these easy, do-it-yourself manicures that have major wow factor and for a fraction of the price! Glitter Manicure For a girly, fabulous manicure that adds character to any outfit! 1) Begin by clipping and shaping your nails. Clean them of any existing nail polish or stains. Buff your nails and shape them. 2) Wipe your nails of any debris. 3) Paint a thin basecoat of clear polish on your nails and let it try. 4) Paint each nail with a coat of your favorite polish. You can really use any color imaginable underneath the glitter coat. Keep in mind that the glitter specs will be more visible atop a dark coat of paint, rather than a light or neutral color. Let the polish dry completely. 5) Choose a glitter polish and evenly paint each nail, picking up a fair amount of polish on the brush and slowy dragging it across your nail bed, from the cuticle to the nail tip. Place enough pressure on the brush so that all of the bristles on the brush spray out, covering your entire nail in one sweep. Glitter polish is textured, and has a different consistency than most polishes; it doesn’t do well with second and third coats. It’s best to only apply one coat of glitter polish since the glitter does not layer well at all. 6) Let glitter coat dry- do not apply a top coat since most heavy glitter polishes don’t react well to layering. Color Suggestions: For a cute, plum manicure try: OPI Siberian Nights (deep plum shade) paired with Deborah Lippmann Shake Your Groove Thing (thick gold flecks coat) For a trendy, glitter manicure try: OPI the “it” color (tawny orange shade) with Sephora Sparkle Me Silver (fine silver glitter coat)

http://shortcutit.com/Makeup_Issuu For a less dramatic version, follow the directions above, only paint your nail tips with glitter rather than coating the entire nail. Moon Manicure Ultra sleek, classy and on-trend. The title might throw you at first, but the moon part is just referring to the moon of your nail (closest to the cuticle). This manicure is super easy to do, and looks super creative and artsy. 1) Begin by clipping and shaping your nails. Clean them of any existing nail polish or stains. Buff your nails and shape them. 2) Wipe your nails of any debris. 3) Paint a thin basecoat of clear polish on your nails and let it try. 4) Choose two nail paints and label them color # 1 and color #2 (a mental note is fine . Color #1 will peek out from underneath color #2, meaning color #1 should be the lighter shade. Keep in mind that your second color must fully cover your lighter shade. * keep in mind that glitter polishes do not usually layer very well, so unless you are using a glitter polish for choice #2, you may want to skip the glitter on this one. 5) With choice #1 (lighter shade) paint each nail with one coat and let dry completely. It’s extremely important that the nails to totally dry! 6) Locate big, circular stickers. The ideal size would be that when you place the sticker over the moon of your nail, it will evenly stick to your nail on each side and in the middle, creating a guide. The key is to place the sticker close the cuticle, so that the moon looks of natural size. If you are looking for a bigger design, simply move the sticker up your nail to create a thicker curve. 7) After the sticker is firmly on your painted nail, coat the remainder of your nail with color #2. Once the nail has been painted, let dry for a few seconds and very slowly begin to peel the sticker off of your nail. Let nail dry and repeat on rest of nails. 8) After nails are completely dry, coat each nail with a clear top -coat of polish to seal in the color. Color Suggestions: OPI Atomic Orange (Color 1) with OPI Road House Blues (Color 2) or OPI French Quarter for Your Thoughts (Color 1) with OPI You’re a Pisa Work (Color 2) If these manicures still seem a bit too time-consuming for your schedule, take a look at this speedy manicure solution:

Olay Complete All Day Moisture Lotion SPF 15 Review by Jayna Davis If there’s one thing you should never forget to apply on your face before leaving the house, it’s sun protection. The sun can bring damage to the skin by exacerbating acne, inducing premature aging and wrinkles, worsening freckles, and causing skin cancer. There is an abundance of products in the market today that promise to bring great results to consumers; however, very few can deliver. I have tried scores of moisturizers and creams with SPF protection but they always left my skin greasy. Since I have sensitive skin, this led to breakouts and blemishes. I have tried different products and was left disappointed until I found the holy grail of sun protection on a budget. Olay Complete All Day Moisture Lotion with SPF 15 for Sensitive Skin is all an urbanite like me will ever need in a moisturizing cream. It is very light and gets absorbed immediately by the skin. Most importantly, for a sunscreen, it doesn’t dry up white, either. On the contrary, it gives my skin a dewy glow all throughout the day. These are reasons why it’s great to use under makeup, but believe me, you can forego the foundation once you have this on. It also contains the antioxidant Vitamin E that helps reduce scarring which is a plus for me since I break out during my period. It is also non-comedogenic, meaning it does not clog your pores. In addition, it is made to be color, fragrance, and PABA free. Although PABA (paraamino benzoic acid) is a UVB absorber, many people who have sensitive skin react badly to it. Moreover, since it already gives you SPF 15, you don’t have to pile on products on your face. Bottom line is, you get the moisture your skin needs and get to protect it without that heavy, greasy feeling. One thing to remember, though, that this is only compatible for everyday use with minimal to average sun exposure. You will need a product with a higher SPF if you plan on spending long hours in the sun, such as a day at the beach, or if you play outdoor sports. Using a product such as this, however, will not guarantee that you blemishes, sunspots, and freckles will be eradicated. What it does is minimizes the damage that the sun will do to our skin. Let’s face it. Only genetics will determine the fate of our skin. The best we can do is take care of what we have.

Designers That Gave Fashion a Makeover by Jayna Davis It is a very rare occasion that designers become an icon in the fashion industry. It undoubtedly takes passion, skill, talent, and of course, the right connections to make a name for yourself. Every now and then there comes a promising designer that is sure to make a dent in the industry. The question is, do they really make an impact in design history? The following is a list of designers that have made their name synonymous to the change that they brought to the dynamic world of fashion. While the names Armani and Valentino are missing, this list focuses on those that have introduced visionary ideas not only in the industry but also changed the way it is perceived by the public. Diane von Furstenberg Diane von Furstenberg was once married to a prince of German descent. This BelgianAmerican designer wanted to be recognized not for her ties to royalty but for a career that would surpass her title. In 1970, she invested $30,000 in designing clothes. She launched a new style of dresses- her most prominent design- the jersey wrap dress. With its iconic prints and colorful designs, the wrap dress is a testament to her talent that launched her career that garnered her lifetime recognitions. Yves Saint Laurent Yves Saint Laurent is credited to have launched the tuxedo into women’s closets. Otherwise known as le smoking, the women’s version of the men’s classic possesses the same sophistication but undoubtedly exudes more sensuality. He was revolutionized the fashion industry by making ready-to-wear garments reputable. He was also the first designer to use ethnic models as well as non-European culture in his collections. He worked under Christian Dior, eventually earning the respect of the designer. He inherited The House of Dior from the designer at the age of 21. Vivienne Westwood Vivienne Westwood is a British fashion designer, as well as a political activist, and businesswoman. Her involvement in politics and pop culture gave her cultural authority and this gave birth to a fashion revolution. She was able to bring modern punk and new wave into mainstream fashion. In more recent events, she was a guest judge in two of America’s most popular fashion reality television shows- Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model. Her designs were also featured in the 2008 film adaptation of the HBO series Sex and the City. Christian Dior This postwar designer’s claim to fame was the introduction of the “New Look” silhouette. His skill and mastery in lines and shapes introduced a new silhouette to women after the Second World War. This shape gave women a “flower silhouette”- a nipped waist, a voluminous full skirt, and a corseted top. His suits and dresses were often padded to balance the bust and accentuate a wasp-like waist.

http://shortcutit.com/Makeup_Issuu Calvin Klein Calvin Klein brought a minimalist and sensual face to American fashion. His underwear collection is a dedication to clean lines and sharp cuts that accentuate both the body and sensuality. His jeans, cut so slim that it glides across the legs of the wearer, gave a modern look to the decade-old fashion staple. His fashion house’s marketability is based largely on provocative images that shocked the conservatives of American society. The distinctive cut of his jeans are more commonly known today as “skinny jeans.” Ralph Lauren Ralph Lauren redefined the clothing choices of America. He took inspiration from elite prep school students and transformed their uniforms into something wearable everyday. He charmed his way into closets by making his collection exude a relaxed American lifestyle without foregoing taste and class. In a way, he made dress codes in prep schools appreciated and introduced “preppy clothing” into mainstream fashion. Carolina Herrera Carolina Herrera gave the industry a facelift by demonstrating that beauty and class go beyond surface level. She is a goodwill ambassador for The Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro‐algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition. She is also a recipient of The International Center in New York’s Award of Excellence, Spain’s Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts, and the Gold Medal of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute. She won the “Womenswear Designer of the Year” in 2004 and the “Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2008 from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Moreover, she received the distinguished “Mercedes-Benz Presents” title for the season spring/summer 2011 collection. Apart from the awards that decorate her name, her genuine heart has won the admiration of many in the industry. Poised with grace and class, her presence in the industry proves that you do not have to step on other people’s dreams and toes to become successful. Coco Chanel Coco Chanel embodied the true essence of power only a rags-to-riches story could conjure. Raised in an orphanage by nuns, she was taught to sew at an early age. She went on to pursue a brief career in singing. Afterwards, she struggled to land a foothold in fashion. She charmed her way into the hearts of two powerful men of whom she was a mistress. She used that influence as financial support. She was the originator of the modern women’s sportswear and the idea of powerdressing. The Chanel suit is definitely her trademark and signature style. Embellished with ribbons, lace, satin and pearls, this outfit stands the test of time and remains a classic. Her nononsense philosophy in fashion liberated women from the constraints of corsets and other padded and uncomfortable clothing. Her vision was to make fashion as comfortable as they are beautiful, and with this she introduced to women the concept of wearing trousers- a garment strictly designed for men during her time. She liberated fashion to new lengths, making it comfortable, classic, and an emblem of influence.

How To Treat Chapped Lips by Jayna Davis Chapped lips are a problem that plagues many women, especially in the winter time. It is unattractive and very embarrassing, but don’t fret! There are many cheap home remedies to fix this issue. Your lips are chapped because they are dry. To combat the dryness, it is imperative that you keep them hydrated. A few methods for hydrating your lips are salt water compresses, applying aloe vera juice, drink more water, get a humidifier for your home, and/or apply a slice of cucumber to your lips. A common misconception is that licking your lips will relieve them of dryness. This is a horrible habit (you are not LL cool J, mkay). This will not at all relieve you of dry lips and will bring attention to your issue. The next step after hydrating your lips is protecting and maintaining. Invest in a good lip balm or make you own preferably one that also protects them from the dangers of the sun. Avoid flavored lip balm. They will only encourage you to lick your lips. Try to target your reasons for licking your lips and work on them. For example, if stress makes you lick your lips, find a way to manage your stress. Try to avoid things like getting toothpasts on the outside of your lips when brushing. Toothpaste is drying and will only irritate the problem. Try baking soda instead. Once you’ve managed to get and keep your lips moisturized, enjoy them! Being released from the confinements of chapped lips is invigorating. It is a major confidence boost and will surely put a smile on your face without the “ouch.” So pucker up, and live!

Perfume vs Cologne by Jayna Davis Perfume vs cologne? Is there even a difference? While it isn’t a question that’s likely to change the course of lives around the world, it is a question that provokes some thought. On the most basic level, most people actually think that perfume is for women and cologne is for men. On that level, they’re right. Basic Perfume Facts Before even considering any sort of discussion on perfume, lovers of the stuff almost always need to take a glance at France, where it came from. There is a general consensus that it has the best perfume in the world, as they turned the Egyptian invention into a true art and science. Perfume doesn’t actually have one scent. It has three and layered, the way a cake or a parfait is layered. This was done because of one single fact; any scent, no matter how strong or thick, will fade, given enough time. Of course, some smells fade sooner than others. By layering or combining these scents into the perfume, the user is assured of a fabulous scent whether they’re on the top, middle or bottom layer or note of perfume scent. While that means that your scent will change as the day goes by, generally each layer carries the same tone and quality. Of course, with the passing of time, other countries have also developed their own scents, so you don’t necessarily have to shop French to get quality perfume. Basic Cologne Facts Now, cologne only has one layer and as such, is single scented, making it a tad less potent than its three-layered cousin. Colognes tend to come in spray, though some can be applied by splashing it onto the skin. While weaker, it can still be easily over-applied if too much is put onto one area. Often, women using cologne opt for a softer touch, slinking into a room with a soft, delicate scent rather than a booming smell. Most men and women achieve the right application of cologne simply by spraying it into the air in front of them, closing or covering their eyes and stepping through the mist. Perfume Vs Cologne It’s a matter of taste, although if you’re going to be somehow too busy to apply another dose through the day, perfume is best. For short and relatively quick occasions, cologne might suit you better. It depends on the kind of scent you want to have. Both perfume and cologne and work well in just about any social occasion. Choosing the right scent is vital, as scent is a powerful trigger for memories and emotions. In fact, some even say it’s the most powerful one. Some women and men actually use one constantly, to develop a signature scent. One people sniff it, they’ll either remember her or know that he or she is there. Make sure to pick one that you feel represents you best. There are plenty of websites out there that can help you pick the exact perfume or cologne for that unforgettable smell that you want to achieve.

Bronzing Face Powder by Jayna Davis People shouldn’t be judged by their skin color. That being said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with picking a skin color that looks better on you. A bronzer is one of the ways people can do that. It is a cosmetic item used and applied onto the skin to change it into a bronze color. This tends to lend people a younger, fresher look if used properly. So, how do you use bronzing face powder? Picking the Right Bronzing Powder In business, location tends to occupy the top three spots when it comes to importance. When it comes to bronzers, you have to pick the right one, too. If you pick the wrong one, it won’t matter how well you apply it or how you dress around it – it won’t work. Picking the right bronzing face powder is first a matter of picking one that complements your skin tone. Don’t go too dark with the bronzing powder as it will end up making you look filthy rather than bronzed. One or two shades darker is perfect but no more. The next thing is that you should pick the right kind of applicator. It can come in liquid, sticks, beads and powder. Don’t hesitate to experiment with the one that works best for your look. Applying Your Bronzing Powder You have to look for the right amount of bronzer to apply. Putting too much to be sure isn’t the philosophy to go by here. Go with a wide fluffy brush to get it onto your face as this will increase the chances that you’ll get the even spread you’re aiming for. You’re targeting your chin, cheeks and, of course, your forehead. Blending can be done easily – simply apply it lightly at first then work from there. If you have too little on, it’s an easy thing to fix. Put too much and you’ll end up wasting your bronzer. You can progress from a light application to the point where you get the shade best for your skin. Make sure that you skip out on bronze lipstick and eyeliner, as combined those with bronzing face powder can lead to an overly bronzed look. Keep the rest of your paint simple. Go with a warm look for your eyes and sheer lips to complement the look better. Miscellaneous Tips It can’t be stressed how much a big fluffy brush can make applying bronzer easier. If the brush you’re using is too narrow, you’ll end up with a somewhat uneven application. Uneven can be bad just as over-application as it leads to a dirty and filthy look which is definitely not what you’re looking for. Feel free to experiment with it. Try different thickness, different combinations of makeup to find out which one works for you. Sure, it might look and seem expensive at the start, but it’ll be cheaper in the long run as you’ll end up using your bronzer more efficiently. Bronzing powder is fairly new so there are no big super rules that you have to follow. Go ahead, try it out for yourself and see how it can improve your look.

Organic Skincare by Jayna Davis Going green is going to be mainstream. Even skincare has gotten into the act with organic makeup. Organic cosmetics is more of a blanket term, as it covers several kinds of natural skincare options. Plant and plant materials themselves can be part of organic skincare products, as well as mineral-based products. What organic really means is that the products themselves have not been exposed to pesticides or other man-made chemicals. Unless the organic cosmetics product actually says certified, it will probably have pesticides in it. Organic Cosmetics Basics As stated above, organic makeup is made up of either minerals, plant derivatives or a neat combination of both. One of the most common misconceptions when it comes to organic skincare is that it is instantly better than chemical or man-made products. After all, plants can also contain high levels of carcinogens. Toxins are also commonly found in plants as well. Minerals on the other hand also carry high toxicity levels. Older models, in fact, could cause lead poisoning due to their content. It is best to research the ingredients of a potential product for you to check for yourself. Choosing the Right Organic Skincare Product The first step in going out shopping for your organic skincare is to make a list containing the makeup that you use, so you know exactly what you’re looking for. The next step is to do the legwork. Learn some Google-fu and research options for possible replacements. If you have a nearby health food store, you can also consult with them. The next step might be the most fun for a lot of people – the guess and test part. This is when you take your cleverly-researched list to the makeup department in your local mall and test out the organic cosmetics available. Luckily, it’s fairly common practice to offer free tests and makeovers, which will allow you to check out how your skin is affected by the makeup before investing any money into it. Make sure to see how your skin reacts in the minutes after you test them out, to see if you’re allergic for them. You’re looking for blotches, redness and itchiness. If you get any of those things, you shouldn’t use that makeup. Next, once you’ve narrowed your organic makeup to things that don’t make you sick, you should list down or research the component ingredients of the makeup left in your list. Organic makeup components such as eye shadow and foundation should have minerals among their ingredients. Glosses should be made from fruits. Make sure to check for certification as well, as plenty of sneaky sellers add organic to their names just to sell their item. Final Word Despite being under one banner, there’s still a wide variety of options under that banner. Make sure to test all the options available to you to make sure that you’re picking the best
