Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. announced the Joan Smalls appointments of Pericles Stamatiades to the position of Company Group Chairman, Global Franchise Organization and Roberto Marques to the position of Company Group Chairman, North America. The newly appointed Stefano Curti, President, Global Skincare will report to Mr. Stamatiades and Jeff B. Smith, newly appointed President, US Skincare, will report to Mr. Marques.

The Bulgari family, the majority shareholder of the renowned Italian House, has decided to join forces with the LVMH Group. Upon completion of the share transfer process, LVMH will issue 16.5 million shares in exchange for the 152.5 million Bulgari shares currently held by the family. LVMH announced the appointment of Christopher de Lapuente as Global President and CEO of Sephora. All regions worldwide will report to him. Carrefour and Alliance Boots have concluded a longterm cooperation agreement in the beauty category. The cooperation will leverage the scale and geographical presence of Carrefour and the advanced knowledge of the Boots contract manufacturing business. Beiersdorf is preparing the ground for future growth with its realigning of the NIVEA brand in its 100th anniversary year. A comprehensive strategy supporting NIVEA will begin the implementation phase in May and will launch a large digital campaign in social media featuring the music of Singer Rihanna. LVMH has completed the acquisition of a 70% stake in NUDE Skincare, the luxury, performance skincare brand. NUDE’s current shareholders will retain a 30% equity ownership in NUDE Brands Ltd. 14

Jillian Banfield, Professor of Earth and Planetary Science, of Environmental Science, Policy and Management, and of Materials Science and Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, has been named the 2011 North American Laureate at the 13th Annual L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Awards that were held March 3 at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

For the full year 2010, International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. reported revenue of $2.6 billion, a 13% increase over the prior year. Avon Products, Inc. reported fourth-quarter 2010 total revenue of $3.2 billion, 1% higher than that of fourth-quarter 2009. In 2010, Givaudan Group sales totaled CHF 4,239 million, an increase of 8.9% in local currencies compared to the previous year. Sales of the Fragrance Division were CHF 1,988 million, an increase of 10.5% in local currencies. For the period ended January 29, Macy’s Inc. posted a profit of $667 million, or $1.55 a share, up from $445 million, or $1.05 a share, a year earlier. Inter Parfums, Inc. reports net sales for the year ended December 31 increased 12.4% to a record $460.4 million from the prior year’s $409.5 million; in constant dollars, 2010 net sales rose 18%. Wal-Mart U.S. sales, at stores that have been open at least a year, have dropped 1.8% for the last 13 weeks ended January 28. Henkel’s sales in fiscal 2010 were €15,092 million, an increase of 11.2% versus the prior-year figure. After adjusting for foreign exchange, sales improved by 6.4%. Beiersdorf AG sales rose by a nominal 7.8% to €6,194 million in 2010, compared to the previous year of €5,748 million. The company’s three global skincare brands NIVEA, Eucerin and La Prairie—each performed positively in 2010. For the 2010 fiscal year ended January 29, Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance, Inc. reports net sales increased 19% to $1,454.8 million, compared to $1,222.8 million in fiscal 2009.
MAKE UP FOR EVER has launched its first ever print and online makeup campaign that has not been digitally retouched—certified by a notary public. At the 2010 QVC QStar Awards on January 19, philosophy received more awards than any other partner. The brand received the outstanding customer experience award, operational excellence award and the coveted vendor of the year award, a second-time honoree. Allure conducted a survey on beauty perceptions and preferences in America. The report shows that 85% of respondents believe that increased diversity in this country has changed what people consider to be beautiful. According to Mintel, lower-income, Spanish-dominant Hispanics are buying name brand personal care products at a higher rate than their English-dominant counterparts. Of the 64% of Hispanics surveyed, who have an income of $25,000-49,000, still buy name brand body soaps or shower gels, compared to 58% of English-dominant Hispanics that buy them despite the economic downturn. Roger & Gallet announces their debut at Duane Reade’s Look Boutique, the chain’s signature beauty department. According to beauty market research conducted by The NPD Group, Inc. in 2010, total U.S. prestige beauty generated $8.4 billion.

osmetic Executive Women (CEW) hosted its first Newsmaker Forum of the new year on February 15 at the Harmonie Club in Manhattan with a conversation featuring Carmen Bauza, Vice President for Beauty and Personal Care for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Muriel Gonzalez, Executive Vice President and General Merchandise Manager for Cosmetics, Fragrances and Shoes at Macy’s Inc. The speakers discussed strategies for reaching and attracting today’s consumer at the event that turned out the largest attendance ever for a CEW Newsmaker Forum. Carlotta Jacobson, President of CEW, introduced the retail leaders, commending them on their “shared spirit of camaraderie, generosity and curiosity.” With today’s customer shopping at a range of stores—from discount centers to department and specialty shops—and on the InterWal-Mart Store’s Carmen Bauza and Macy’s Muriel net, consumer spending habits have created a retail tug-of-war of Gonzalez with CEW’s Carlotta Jacobson cross-channel shopping that retailers must now navigate through to build store loyalty. “Customers have so many great choices everywhere they go,” said Ms. Gonzalez, “What we have to do better is sharpen our service, be smarter about our service.” Better service for Macy’s includes offering exclusive brands and products, targeting defined consumer segments (the store developed the Impulse Beauty section directed at the Millennial Generation) and by providing incentives such as gifts-with-purchase, allowing customers to try new products while getting an added value. An understanding of the consumer is of the highest importance for successful retail management. “We know more about our customers than ever before,” shared Ms. Gonzalez, detailing that Macy’s database system is able to track 30 million households, allowing the company to make appropriate marketing decisions and provide the most relevant selection of inventory.

The skincare category continues its stronghold in beauty, consistently outperforming makeup and fragrance. In annual 2010, prestige skincare was up 10%, while makeup climbed a more modest 3% and fragrance increased slightly at 1%. Even in the midst of the economic downturn in 2009, prestige skincare suffered less in dollar sales than makeup and fragrance (-4% vs. -5% and -10%, respectively). A huge driver of skincare’s success is anti-aging and the never-ending quest to turn back the clock. According to NPD’s new report, Anti-Aging Facial Skincare and the Female Consumer, more than half of all women skincare users seek out anti-aging products (56%). And with anti-aging products accounting for more than 60% share of prestige skincare sales and double-digit growth in 2010, consumers are willing to spend their way to the fountain of youth. But what does anti-aging mean to the consumer? Why are we so concerned with obtaining a flawless face without expression lines and sagging skin? Most anti-aging consumers are internally motivated to start using anti-aging products after noticing something about their own appearance. In the end, it boils down to one thing…putting one’s best face forward. The anti-aging category is one of constant innovation and renovation. New products hit the shelves and minutes later it seems, a new and improved version comes out. Technology is moving at warp speed offering products beyond your traditional wrinkle creams, targeting new aging issues and discovering scientific breakthroughs. This constant newness can sometimes cause confusion in consumers. About 43% of all anti-aging consumers agree that they are not sure which anti-aging products to use or try. And when we look at the seekers who are not buying, confusion is one of the key barriers for purchases. If we are to help the female consumer to bridge the gap between her confusion and our technology, we must first understand where she goes for education and recommendations before making her anti-aging choices. To help educate herself about the often mystifying anti-aging benefits, she is doing her homework and checking everywhere from magazine articles to online searches. And, beyond these sources, she seeks the validation and recommendation from someone she knows or trusts—friends, family, coworkers—even more than other sources of information. Just as skin types and skincare concerns vary, the needs of the anti-aging consumer are multifaceted. As we better understand her mindset, we can develop the most relevant communications and products that meet all of her anti-aging needs at both the functional and emotional level. Vanilla from Madagascar and ylang ylang from Moheli, the smallest of the Comoros Islands, are the latest scents to be included to the fragrance manufacturers’ repertoire. Givaudan Perfumers Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Michel Girard along with Remi Pulverail, Head of Natural Materials, spoke with guests about their travel to the islands to establish the company’s latest programs as well as Givaudan’s agenda for sustainable development. Givaudan’s Executive Vice President, Global Fine Fragrances, Cosimo Policastro stated that “Both of these materials are experiencing a renaissance with Givaudan’s help and in a sustainable way. n February 23, The Fragrance Foundation held another of its Insiders’ Breakfasts for entry to middle level members of the beauty industry in marketing, brand management, sales promotion and public relations who want a unique insider’s view of its leaders—the individuals and the corporations. This most recent breakfast was hosted by Terry Darland, President of Parfums Christian Dior, NA. The event was held at the New York City headquarters of Parfums Christian Dior. A serendipitous response to a newspaper ad for a job as a Revlon Dior Beauty’s Terry Darland (2nd r.) with The Fragrance Charlie girl at a Hudson’s department store in Michigan was Ms. Darland’s Foundation’s Mary Ellen Lapsansky, Rochelle Bloom first job in the beauty business. Her career got a jump-start when she was and Terry Molnar asked to fill in a spot at the Clinique counter. After putting on a white coat, her career began its upward trajectory. Building a solid business at-counter led to her appointment as a Clinique Coordinator, and she traveled all over Michigan opening counters and training people. Other positions at Clinique were followed by a move to Prescriptives. Eventually, Ms. Darland joined Prescriptives’ corporate headquarters at The Estée Lauder Companies in New York City as head of Sales. It was there that she met Pamela Baxter who was to play such an important role in her future professional life. At The Estée Lauder Companies, Robert Nielsen, former Group President, became a mentor to Ms. Darland. “Bob wanted ideas every day, and I learned how to work with those challenges.” She also used time management to balance her career and the demands of two children. At the same time, she noted that she Ms. Darland shares wise advice as well as always took good care of herself. ach year, Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) recognizes innovative beauty products that have launched throughout the year with its Beauty Insider’s Choice Awards. At the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan on March 9, the 17th Annual 2011 CEW Beauty Awards Product Demonstration was held to allow CEW members—over 2,000 in attendance—to preview the contending products to determine where their votes will be cast for the awards. This year, over 600 products were entered into the exhibition from over 350 beauty brands. Products were organized into twenty-six categories that were individually vetted by The NPD Group for proper placement. CEW President Carlotta Jacobson explained that the value of the awards is due to the voters. “Every brand thinks that their product is the best. The CEW Beauty Awards allows people [in the beauty industry] to vote on their own competition. They know the products, they know the latest innovations, and they know what is new.” A CEW Beauty Award is a CEW’s Carlotta Jacobson and Jill Scalamandre guarantee that the product is the best available. This year features the first-ever Eco Beauty Award that recognizes brands that have taken steps towards sustainability. Out of the forty-one eco-conscious entrants, ten were chosen as award finalists by The Natural Step, a global organization that promotes sustainable development and were announced at the March 9 demonstration. From those finalists selected, the winning product will be chosen by a special Eco Beauty Award Voting Committee.

ulfilling a desire to open a namesake boutique, François Nars found the perfect site at 413 Bleecker Street. The 525-square foot flagship boutique in Manhattan’s West Village fuses elements of modernity and artistry with a sense of a residential space. “It fits with the fashion-forward environment of this neighborhood,” explained Louis Desazars, Chief Executive Officer of NARS Cosmetics. NARS 413 Bleecker was designed in collaboration with Fabien Baron, Founder of Baron + Baron. The Espaço Perfume Arte + História exhibition in São Paulo
The city of São Paulo has won its first permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of perfumery. In partnership with University Santa Marcelina, the Boticário Group has created Espaço Perfume Arte + História (Perfume Space Art + History), which travels through 5,000 years of perfume history in a playful and interactive way. The exhibition features a rich collection of images and more than 500 historical pieces, including original and replica objects, which helps visitors learn more about the composition of perfumes, understand their manufacturing process and remember some of the world’s most renowned fragrances. The collection was set up with the collaboration of over 100 perfumery brands and had an investment of over US$850,000 made by the Boticário Group, along with sponsors and partners. “We are proud to offer the public an opportunity for interactive contact with the history of perfume and a O Boticário’s Miguel Krigsner sensorial journey through this fascinating world,” said Miguel Krigsner, Founder and President of O Boticário. “We are confident that this exhibition will offer a unique experience to all perfume lovers.” The historical background begins in 3000 BC, when incense and perfumed oils were used in rituals for gods and pharaohs in Ancient Egypt. The exhibit also features an original amphora dated to 1500 BC and a bottle of the famous Jean-Marie Farina Eau de Cologne, Napoleon Bonaparte’s favorite. To illustrate the “Perfumery and Fashion” section of the exhibit, seven sketches were drawn by University Santa Marcelina students that portray celebrities who were outstanding in their eras, from the classic Audrey Hepburn to the controversial Lady Gaga. With growing concern for the future of the planet, the idea of reducing packaging finds fertile ground to take root within the cosmetic industry. Following the latest developments, the result in Italy is Negozio Leggero. Literally meaning “light shop,” Negozio Leggero is a place where a package-conscious variety of food, coffee, tea, spices, milk and a selection of wines can be found, and now included in this assortment are eco-friendly beauty products, detergents and soaps. The modalities of the package reductions vary depending on the product at Negozio Leggero. Lipstick tubes and mascara brushes are made of a special material produced from corn, which looks like plastic but is fully biodegradable. Mascara ampoules are made of glass and can be recycled. In addition, blushes and eye shadows magnetically attach to holders, allowing them to become refillable and not thrown away. Wine and cleaning detergents can be sold on tap, but the Italian law forbids this for bath foam, body milk and other cosmetic products. Those bottles can be returned and are granted a €1 savings for a future purchase of the product; the shop will then sterilize and reuse the bottles. At Negozio Leggero, cosmetics are produced with non-allergenic natural components, mostly derived from corn and are expected to meet a series of legal requirements. “Luckily, the law is on our side,” says Cinzia Vaccaneo, one of the Founders of Negozio Leggero. “In Italy, there are many restrictions on what elements can be used for cosmetic purposes in order to guarantee people’s health. This obviously helps our cause a lot.” Each item sold is the result of extensive research that aims to improve products as well as the environment. Perfumerías Júlia is a well established company in Spain, especially in Catalunya, that has a very rich history. In 1939, Perfumerías Júlia was nothing more than a dream for Júlia Bonet Fité. Born in Andorra, a tiny country nestled between Spain and France, she opened a hairdressing salon below her family’s home when she was just seventeen years old. Although being a female entrepreneur was not easy in the postwar years, Ms. Fité accepted the challenge. The store in Barcelona

Hard work and a constant commitment to high quality—Ms. Fité would travel alone to Toulouse, France, to provide her clients with superior products—resulted in a single store becoming a broad network of locations. By 1980, Perfumerías Júlia had eleven stores in Andorra. Around that time, her family—her husband and three daughters had also joined in the endeavor—created the company’s first feminine fragrance, Eau de Toilette Júlia. This perfume would be the first product in a line that has since continued to grow.
The following decade would bring even more opportunity. The company launched Júlia News which turned into a pioneering beauty magazine in the region. By 1999, there were so many French and Spanish clients traveling to Andorra for the shop that Ms. Fité made a decision to open up stores in Spain. Once stores in Huesca, Tarragona and Barcelona became successful enterprises, Perfumerías Júlia continued expanding in the following years. Today, there are 61 stores, 22 of which are in Andorra and 39 in Spain, which now offer moisturizing products, tanning and cleansing towels and male grooming products, among many others. In 2004 came Perfumerías Júlia’s creation of “El Museo del Perfume” in the location of the original A n d o r ra s t o r e . Ms. Nash said “It really grabs you.” Speaking of scents, Olga Hill, Macy’s Fragrance Department Manager at Triangle Town Center, says her new bestselling fragrances are Coach Poppy, Gucci Guilty and Beyoncé Heat Rush. Ms. Hill describes Coach Poppy as a sweet floral fragrance with delicious notes of cucumber, rose, jasmine, cedarwood and marshmallow. She says Gucci Guilty is a “fresh, clean, seductive scent.” This sultry, sexy scent is in demand as well as Beyoncé’s newest liquid potion, Heat Rush. Notes of yellow tiger orchid, mango flower and orange hibiscus create the fiery rush. The subtle base contains notes of teak, amber and musk, inspired by Brazilian sunsets. The original scent from the Singer, Beyoncé Heat, was introduced in 2010, and Ms. Hill reports that it also sells well.

By allotting her family a monthly allowance of $60.00 for personal care products this past January, Ms. Bauza mimicked the typical monthly amount spent with the average Walmart shopper’s annual income of $26,000. Her time on the restricted budget included consciously extending the longevity of products and holding off on purchases that weren’t in her monthly budget, reinforcing the need to offer products at prices that keep true to the company’s “Save money, live better” philosophy. “We make sure the right brands are in our assortment at the right prices,” said Ms. Bauza. This includes bringing prestige brands into the store’s assortment. Whether to gain feedback, offer samples or promote new products, a presence on social media Web sites has created an interactive platform for companies to be where their customers are at all times. Though both Ms. Bauza and Ms. Gonzalez discussed that today’s retail success is the result of understanding as well as creating an open dialogue with consumers, both retailers agreed that the future remains an unexplored territory. Nevertheless, whoever and wherever tomorrow’s consumer may be, the retail leaders remained confident in their developing approaches. “The future is hard to predict,” said Ms. Bauza, “but we’ll be ready for her, in front of her.”
