your part in making this past season at the Club one of the most exciting Coral Ridge has ever seen! Whether it was a Friday night happy hour or special event like one of the Member-Guest tournaments, you created a truly vibrant atmosphere. As we head into the summer months, a more relaxed atmosphere prevails, but we still have countless activities and events in store for you! As always, our junior summer camp programs offered from June through mid-August are filling up fast; be sure to enroll your children, grandchildren and their friends in golf, tennis, swim or combo camp. Make a splash at one of the summer pool parties, watch sparks fly at the 4th of July event and join us on Wednesday and Thursday evenings for Twilight Dip & Dine. Now is the time to get involved in fun weekly events that you just haven’t fit into your schedule before! Join us for the Women’s 9 & Wine on Wednesday evenings, the Men’s 9-holers on Thursday
evenings and/or the co-ed Cardio Tennis clinic on Wednesdays and Fridays. It’s easy to get involved in these events that won’t take up too much of your time and will provide you with a fun way to work on your game. Please take a moment and think if you know anyone who would enjoy being a Member of the Club. Maybe it’s a neighbor, co-worker, or good friend? It would be our pleasure to have them join us as a “Member for the Day” so please let Cheryl and I know of any interested parties; thank you in advance for promoting your Club! S AV E

After 30+ Years As Pool Director, JoAnn Davies Is Retiring For over 30 years, JoAnn Davies has been instrumental in the growth and development of our swim programs, lessons and summer camps. JoAnn has devoted her career to Coral Ridge Country Club and she wouldn’t have it any other way.“This is the best job in the whole world,” JoAnn said. She even recalls Robert Trent Jones nickname for her “Flipper”! On October 15, 1983, at 27 years of age, she began working 2 days a week as a life guard and the other 3 days in the Ladies Locker Room as an attendant. Then in 1989 she accepted the full-time position as the Pool Director and never looked back. Some of her fondest memories have been teaching over 3,000 children how to swim and then

their children how to swim. “I’m going to miss the feeling I get when a child learns how to swim and the way the Members have treated me like family.” JoAnn recalled how the Members have been so warm and caring over the years including helping her through her breast cancer surgery in September of 1997. With the support of the Club and the membership, she was able to teach again by that November. During her retirement JoAnn plans on spending her days with her mom who is 88 years old, “I consider this a calling and a blessing,” JoAnn said. Her official last day at CRCC is Friday, August 15; be sure to book your swim lessons with her this summer and stop by the Pool to wish her all the best!

Enjoying Summer Golf! WE WELCOME THE
summer months as a time to enjoy family and friends, have fun and play more golf! As the heat of summer approaches, one of the most important things on every golfer’s mind is trying to keep cool. We would like to offer you a few suggestions: Clothing – Both the Tennis & Golf Pro Shops carry an assortment of clothing that breathes and helps wick away moisture from the body. Many of these style shirts come in both short and long sleeve for the men and ladies.
Sun block – Apply the highest level of SPF to all exposed areas of your body to direct sunlight. All CRCC Pro Shops carry these products for your choosing. Hydration – To keep your body hydrated, we offer a variety of beverages at the Carousel and in the Men’s and Ladies Locker Rooms. Drinking plenty of water is always a good idea. Chilled Towels – For refreshing relief from the summer heat, please take advantage of the chilled towels available outside the Golf Shop and Carousel, as well as at the restrooms on the golf course. We hope that by offering you these heat relieving options, your use of the Club in the summer months will be more enjoyable.

To ensure proper growth, root structure, and top playing conditions for you, the Member and your guests, the summer allows the maintenance staff to aggressively apply the horticultural practices necessary for maintaining healthy and mature growth year-round. The practices that are done during the summer months include: Aerifying Fairways – Aerifying loosens the soil that has become compacted by cart, equipment, and foot traffic, opening up growing room for the roots and increasing oxygen to the roots. This helps water infiltration and makes them firmer. Aerifying Greens – Promotes healthy turf growth. A machine, known as an Aerifier, removes 3 to 5 inch long cores of turf and soil. The removal of cores, allows water, air and nutrients from the top-dressing to reach the soil roots, thereby enhancing growth. Top-dressing Greens • Promotes Tighter, Finer-Textured Turf • Encourages Upright Growth • Thatch Control • Disease Prevention • Better Water & Fertilizer Infiltration • Alleviates Compaction • Protects Against Winter Kill Verticutting Tees & Fairways – Helps to reduce thatch build-up and allows moisture and oxygen into the root system. Thatch restricts movement of air, water and fertilizers into the soil.

growth, provides better water penetration and, by pulling the core, it allows us to add new sand and nutrients to the profile. Once the plugs are pulled from the tee surface they become soft and should level out; however, we will use a 2-ton roller to assist in this process. When the aerification process is complete we will fill the holes with sand which will provide a smoother surface on the greens and help heal the holes. These two practices can cause the most disruption of play, but are crucial in maintaining the health of the course. Another practice that will be performed on an on-going basis is verticutting of the greens, tees and fairways. Verticutting helps to reduce grain, removes turf that is growing
laterally and provides a smoother playing surface. Topdressing usually follows this procedure. The application of sand to the surface of the greens and tees helps to smooth the surface and prevents it from becoming too soft and spongy. These horticultural practices are very important in maintaining both the course appearance you appreciate and the overall health of the turf. We perform these practices when the least amount of Members are playing the course (based on use in past years) and hope that those of you who are playing through any type of course conditions brought on by maintenance will still be able to enjoy your round. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in advance.
Play with the Pros All Members are invited to play a round of golf with any member of the Professional Staff. Whether it is here at The Ridge or off property at one of our many reciprocal courses, we welcome the opportunity in building relationships and improving your game!

THE BEST TIME TO
perform most cultural practices is during the summer months including: aerification, verticutting and topdressing. The warmer weather increases the healing time, the grass grows rapidly and there is usually more rainfall during this period. In June and August, we will be aerifying the greens and the tees. This practice is beneficial because it helps to improve root

C LU B EV E N T R E S E RVAT I O N P O L I C Y Special club events, wine dinners, Saturday night seafood buffets and holiday dining are popular events that sell out and require the purchase of special food and beverage products, equipment, entertainment, etc. Last minute un-replaced cancellations (including changes to the party number) are unfair to those Members who are turned away due to full capacity and cause the Club to incur unnecessary expenses if the reservation is not replaced. As a result, the Club must exercise a firm enforcement of the special event and holiday dining policy. • At the time of making your reservation we will charge your account 100% of the event price. • Please let us know if you have other Members dining with you, so we may contact them. • You may cancel 7 days prior to event, without being charged. • If you cancel less than 7 days prior to the event, you will have to pay 100% of the event price. Note: Should there be a wait list and we are able to fill your reservation less than 6 days prior to the event, your account will be credited in full.
