hen the Storms of Life Are Raging” (better known by its title “STAND BY ME”) was written in 1906 by Rev Dr Charles Albert Tindley (1851-1933), one of the founding fathers of gospel hymnody. An outstanding African American pastor in Philadelphia, he was often referred to as “the prince of preachers”! Gifted in both preaching and poetry, he used familiar hymns to enhance his message; to encourage and impart hope to his mainly urban African

American congregation, many of whom were slaves, poor and disadvantaged. Tindley’s father, (Charles) was a slave but his mother (Hester) was free. Sadly, he lost his mother at the age of four and was separated from his father at age five. He was taken in by his mother’s sister in order to keep his freedom. From young, he taught himself to read and write. At age seventeen he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to work as an unskilled laborer and a building caretaker at

Bainbridge Street Methodist Episcopal Church where he was converted. During this period, he studied at night school and by correspondence course to prepare for ministry in the Methodist Church. In 1885 (aged 34), he was admitted as a probationer; later he was appointed as a deacon and served in a number of churches in New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware. In 1900, he went a full-circle and returned as pastor of Bainbridge Street Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia.

Under Tindley’s faithful ministry, the church membership grew and they had to relocate to a bigger premise bought from a white Presbyterian church. They renamed the church as East Calvary Methodist Episcopal Church. It became the main black church in Philadelphia with a diverse congregation that included African Americans, Hispanics and people of European origins. Later it was renamed for a second time, as Tindley Temple Methodist Episcopal Church. Though he was a wellknown African-American preacher in Philadelphia, Tindley often suffered racial discrimination and persecution. He once said in a sermon:

1- the calming of storms by Jesus (Matthew 8:23-27); stanza 4- Paul and Silas freed in prison (Acts 16:2526) and stanza 5- Jesus as the “Lily of the Valley” (Song of Songs 2:1) and the familiar imagery of “chilly Jordan” to describe impending death. The hymn’s cry for help covers life’s many challenging situations – tribulations, personal faults and failures, misunderstanding by friends, persecutions by enemies, aging and death! At the personal level, the death of his wife, Daisy, on the eve of the dedication of the Tindley Temple Methodist Episcopal Church, was a great setback to Tindley. In addition, he also lost one of his sons in World War I. At the ministry level, Tindley had to face the financial burdens of a large church made up mainly of poverty-stricken members. As the pastor of an outstanding ministry and a big church, Tindley had to deal with abuse, opposition, criticisms and misunderstanding. He once said, “It was when I was overburdened with criticisms, abuse, and oppositions – some of them from those whom I took to be my best friends—I wrote ‘Stand by Me’.” (Quoted by Robert J. Bremen. Later he served as a minister in Kiel between 1886 and 1889. After three years as a pastor, Bishop James Thoburn invited him to serve as a missionary in Singapore. He departed for Singapore on 16 September 1889, the first missionary from the German Episcopal Methodist Church. 2

Missionary work in Singapore

ne of the most energetic Methodist missionaries in Southeast Asia was a German Methodist who could preach in 25 languages. Dr. Heinrich Ludwig Emil Luering, who was born on 9 December 1863, in Delmenhorst, Oldenburg, and died 14 October 1937, in Frankfurt, Germany, had a Methodist missionary career that covered Borneo, Singapore and Perak, and was best known for establishing the Foochow community in Sitiawan. 1

Early life Dr. Luering was the second son of Adolf H. L. Luering, a German Methodist pastor and Katharina Elisabeth Riehmer. After graduating from the University of Strassburg with a doctorate in natural sciences and oriental languages, he began working at the Methodist Publishing House in 5 • 2017 •

He arrived in Singapore in October 1889 but soon after was sent to Dutch West Borneo in 1890, the first attempt by the Methodists to go beyond the British colonies in the region. The following year, Dr. Luering went to British North Borneo, where he began missionary work among the Dyaks, a tribal people well known as headhunters. He acquired fluency in Malay during his posting in Borneo. Due to growing needs in Singapore, he returned in December 1891. In Singapore, Dr. Luering ran a German service at the newly established Methodist Church at Coleman Street. He also pastored the Straits Chinese at the Malay Church and helped raise $1,000 through friends in Germany for their new church building, the renovated Christian Institute. Between 1892 and 1899, he also headed the Telok Ayer Methodist Church. 3 During 1895-1896, many of the Hokkien members of Telok Ayer Methodist Church returned to China or left for elsewhere. There was no competent Chinese Hokkien preacher. The majority of the remaining members

were mainly Hock Chiang, Foochow and Hinghwa speaking. Dr. Luering was sent to China in late 1896 with a letter from the Malayan Mission to request Bishop Joyce from the Foochow Conference, to assist in transferring a native Hokkien or Foochow speaking pastor to shepherd the flock in Singapore. In early 1897, Rev. Ling Ching Mi together with Dr. Luering arrived in Singapore and attended the 5th Session of the Malayan Mission Conference on 10-15 February 1897 in Penang. 4 It was Dr Leuring’s effort in persuading Bishop Joyce and the subsequent deployment of the founding pastor Rev Ling, that Foochow Methodist Church, Singapore, was officially established in late 1897. Dr. Luering had oversight of the missionary work owing to the frequent sickness of Rev. Ling and frequently took his place at the pulpit. 5 It is worthwhile to note that Dr. Luering actually began the Foochow Chinese Mission in Singapore in 1894 which shared the same building as the Malay congregations started by Rev. W.G. Shellabear. 6 He married Ms. Violet Marie Beins, (born 1 September 1876, Singapore and died 9 October 1949) on 8 September 1892 and they had seven children. As an accomplished linguist, Dr. Luering, spoke multiple Chinese dialects, including Cantonese, Hakka, Foochow and Hokkien, which he acquired in Amoy where he was

forced to take three months’ leave to recuperate after a bout of malaria. He also spoke fluent English although with a German accent.

Missionary work in Perak

The experimental relocation proved to be a success for both the government and the Methodist Church in establishing a foreign community in Malaya and a church within it.

In 1900, he took over Rev William E. Horley’s pioneering work in Ipoh, where he established a church and several schools through the patronage of tin mining magnate Mr. Foo Choo Choon. Due to his fluency in several languages, the Perak government engaged him in 1903 to help recruit and resettle Chinese from Foochow, who were needed to develop the agricultural industry as a complement to the tin mining business. Dr. Luering brought a contingent of Chinese to the Malay Peninsula, where they settled in what is now Kampong Koh in Sitiawan. Although the poor soils did not allow the settlers to grow rice and vegetables successfully, Dr. Luering initiated the planting of 20,000 rubber trees that later became the most significant crop in Perak. With the help of Rev Ling Ching Mi, Dr. Luering also set up a

Dr. Luering wrote and translated many hymns into Malay. He wrote many philological and ethnographic articles on the Dyaks, Malays and Sakais, which appeared in the Journal of The Royal Asiatic Society.

Lecturing Dr. Luering took his furlough in March 1905, visiting Europe over nine months and then the United States, where he lectured on missionary work in Malaya. Returning to Malaya in 1907, he became District Superintendent of Penang. He left his post on 31 August 1909 to become Professor of Theology at Martin Theological College, Frankfurt am Main, the only Methodist seminary in Central Europe at the time.

He taught there for 24 years. After his retirement in 1933, he continued to lecture across continents until 1937, when he underwent a serious operation. In His Time 2003 The Mandarin congregation started with less than 20 worshippers, comprising mainly parents of members of our English congregation.

2007 A seniors’ fellowship group was started to reach out to more parents and grandparents. By God’s grace, today our seniors’ fellowship meets twice a month. With seniors forming the bulk of the congregation, leadership renewal was increasingly challenging.

2009 A fellowship group for young adult Chinese nationals was set up. It was difficult to establish stability as

2017 A youth fellowship was pioneered. God sent us a young adult from the English congregation with a heart for this ministry. Through the years, we saw God systematically growing the Mandarin congregation ‘sector by sector’ to about 125 worshippers today. As He steadily lowers the median age of our congregation, it brings hope to leadership renewal. Pray for us as we nurture all age groups with God’s resources and develop committed servant leaders with His wisdom.

Tay Thor Bee I feel so blessed to journey together as pilgrims towards God’s kingdom. From the crucial moment when we accepted Christ, we are in His Kingdom of Light. I am thankful to have met like-minded brothers and sisters who desire to walk in His Truth. ollowing the success of CAMP “IGNITE” in 2015, the youth group from PLCMM organised another youth camp “IDENTITY” in December 2016. Months before the 4D3N residential stay-in programme, the camp committee led by Nathanael Chong and Sherman Sia, had been praying conscientiously every Sunday morning at 8am before their usual Sunday services. The LORD is good, and He revealed what He had in store for this group of young people. This camp was targeted not just at building up the spiritual “synergy” among the youth members. It was also opened to Primary 5 and 6 students* of the Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Pri), who wished to know more about Christ and themselves. Our guest speaker for the camp, Pastor Julian Wong, has been serving the LORD with his unwavering love for the youth ministries not just in Singapore, but also other countries as well. As the youth embarked on this

journey of self-discovery, Ps Julian put together a package for them, namely three main learning points on public speaking, inducing a forward-looking spirit as well as leadership. Day 1 - The tips and tricks of public speaking and how to achieve that perfect “you” of who you can be on stage. Day 2 - Learning from past failures to be successful in future. “Often we must let go of our comfort from our past to make progress in the future” – Ps Julian. Day 3 - The iceberg diagram depicting our leadership capabilities. The 10% above the water represents the skills and the 90% below represents the values and character. It is what is below the surface that sinks the ship. Apart from the sermon sessions done by Ps Julian, there were many fun icebreakers, as well as physical and mental games hosted by the games committee. Instead of the usual youth camps whereby 20% served the 80%, Camp “IDENTITY” was a success with 80% of the PLCMM youths serving the remaining 20% of the camp members.

PLCMM youths were given the chance to lead as they broke into their smaller groups. “My committee and I aimed to reach out to the campers, and through various activities find out more about them and make friends with them. This year was special as we opened sign-ups to PLMGS, besides our church's youth group,” said Nathaniel Chong, the camp commandant of Camp Identity 2017. “We sought to share the gospel to the pre-believers in the camp as well as forge friendships and memories that would last,” he continued. There is a constant desire to align our PLCMM youths’ hearts with the LORD’s. Every evening when the P5s and P6s went home, the committee would gather together back in Mini Chapel behind the Social Hall for a debrief as well as time of sharing. This helped the committee to better prepare themselves for the next day as they once again welcomed the newcomers, shaping their new 샂 Christian life one day at a time. *The P5s and P6s students did not stay in for the 3 nights

oving others in good times is common. Loving others in times of crisis is challenging. But loving others amid the intensity of a Captain’s ball match, where every single individual is solely focused on winning, exists only in our imagination. And yet, this was the exhortation that the CAC President, Rev Dr Goh Nai Lat issued to the more than 300 youths from 12 churches who participated in the 2017 edition of the Board of Youth Ministry’s Captain’s Ball tournament. After a time of worship led by Queenstown CMC, Rev Dr Goh explained Jesus’ command to His disciples in John 13, emphasizing that displaying Christ-like love to one another, especially in the heat

of competition, is not only a mark of our witness as disciples but also a responsibility of mutual submission. After a hiatus of 10 years, the Captain’s ball tournament this year, saw 14 and 12 teams from 12 churches in the Chinese Annual Conference, competing for top honours in the Senior and Junior Divisions respectively. Many of the teams demonstrated their dedication to and keenness for the game by bringing intricate set plays and pin-point shooting from the training ground into the tournament. Eventually, the junior team from Queenstown CMC and the senior team from Sengkang MC edged out the other teams and emerged worthy winners of the tournament. While each of the top three teams in the junior and senior divisions celebrated their victories with movie gift cards and ice cream vouchers, this year’s tournament also celebrated individuals who displayed Christ-like love during their matches. After each match, participants were invited to vote vo te for players from the opposing

team who demonstrated Christ-like love and eventually Cheng Rui from Paya Lebar CMC, Jing Xiang from Telok Ayer CMC and Sandar from SengKang MC, received the most nominations for their loving actions on court and they each were awarded movie gift cards and ice cream vouchers as well. Despite some space constraints posed by playing Captain’s Ball on badminton courts, participants interviewed after the event were in agreement that the tournament fostered not only closer bonding among their friends from their own churches’ youth ministries, but also enabled interaction between churches. Zhi Xiang from Paya Lebar CMC echoed this sentiment as he reflected, “I got to see all my other friends from different churches and was able to play together and catch up.” Regina from Telok Ayer CMC further felt that through the event, “I got to understand the other churches a little more… how they pray and worship.” Participants interviewed were unanimous in their eager anticipation of the next edition of the BOYM Captain’s Ball tournament. 샂 CAC B

The 180 th Anniversary of The Bible Society of Singapore Rev Ezekiel Tan General Secretary, Bible Society of S’pore

he Bible mission in Singapore began in 1823, when 1,000 Chinese New Testaments were distributed to early settlers through Rev Dr Robert Morrison. These efforts were supported by Singapore’s founder, Sir Stamford Raffles, and in 1837, the Bible Society was formally established. Also in 1837, a 26-year-old missionary, Rev Benjamin Keasberry, arrived in Singapore, and would play a crucial role in the Bible mission. Many missionaries who were in Singapore at the time were interested to minister in China, and in 1842, the end of the first Opium War opened up opportunities to enter the mission field there. Almost all the missionaries in Singapore left, but Rev Keasberry chose to stay and build the ministry he had begun in Singapore. He engaged in translation work with the Bible Society, and became its President in 1870. The foresight and commitment of people like Rev Morrison, Sir Raffles, and Rev Keasberry planted the seed of Bible ministry here, and the Bible Society remembers their efforts today, as it gives thanks for the development of Singapore’s Bible mission landscape. Indeed, Bible mission work has

evolved over the past 180 years. While the Bible Society continues the important work of translation, publishing, and distribution, its work has also expanded to bringing God’s Word to more people in different ways. In line with the global Bible movement, the Society has taken steps to serve people holistically, in ways other than distributing Scriptures. Providing humanitarian aid to people affected by war and natural disasters, such as to refugees in Lebanon in 2014, is one example of this. The Society also partners with regional Bible Societies to run literacy classes, enabling people to read the Bible, and improving their general standard of living. Through these efforts, lives have been deeply touched and transformed. “Thank you… Our children are seeing how the Christians are standing beside us and it is very important for them to see this gift.”- Hanna Bakos, a refugee in Lebanon who received aid from the Bible Society in 2014. The Bible Society has also launched new initiatives to encourage people to delve deep into the Bible. The International Bible Experiences ministry organises Bible Mission Trips

and Bible Land Tours, which often give participants a fresh experience of God’s Word and ministry. The ETHOS Institute for Public Christianity, formed by the National Council of Churches of Singapore, Trinity Theological College, and the Bible Society of Singapore, organises programmes that address relevant societal issues. Family and NextGen ministries have also been formed to promote the importance of reaching the next generation, through programmes like the D6 Family Ministry Conference that is being organised with the CAC this year. “Every time we go on a mission trip, we receive more than we give. We experience God’s presence and power in a very real way when we work in the mission field.”- Ho Tor Kwun, 2013 Philippines Bible Mission Trip participant. s a Christian for the past 3 decades, I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in several mission trips, which stopped after I became a mother. Last December, I finally mustered up my courage and brought my firstborn D on a mission-exposure trip to East Asia. Here, I share about my pre-trip apprehensions and post-trip reflections.

He’s too young, he has autism At age 9+, D was the youngest member and only child in the team. Besides theme-park holidays, he has not travelled with unfamiliar adults to a lessdeveloped country. I was nervous about whether he could cope. God set me up for an experience beyond my imagination and threw us out of our comfort zone. Our flight was delayed due to bad weather. We spent a night at the airport, and a second night in another city when we missed our connection flight and arrived at our destination more than 24 hours late. Despite travel disruptions, fatigue, hunger and cold, D handled everything

with a positive attitude and joined the team enthusiastically on each ministry outreach.

He won’t be able to “do anything” I wasn’t confident that D could join in outreach programs meaningfully or even understand the daily conversations. He proved me wrong when he gamely agreed to sing a solo segment for church service in an unfamiliar language. He spent many days learning the different songs for carolling outreach. During the trip, he sang wholeheartedly and with gusto. God showed me it is not the act but the heart of service that He is cultivating in D.

He’ll disrupt the team Schedules had to be adjusted to suit D’s stamina. Sometimes, he made mistakes or inconvenienced the team and ministry program. However, his presence brought the team together.

The experience of serving together as a family is vital for children to witness that mission and servanthood are important tenets of their parents’ faith. In an inter-generational team, we learnt to look out for our young and old and consider the needs of different members. For D, it was a transformative experience to learn that the world does not revolve around him like it does back home.

He’ll distract me Besides my different roles in the team, I was foremost, a mother on the trip. I had to take care of D’s daily needs. This was something I had to change my attitude-not to begrudge the “extra parenting responsibility”. This “distraction” from D also challenged my parenting outlook. Was I too protective? Was I worrying unnecessarily? Could I trust God to look after us? To many, bringing a child on a mission trip to a developing country that is not open to the Gospel may seem unwise. God reminded me that nowhere in this world is 100% safe and nothing I can do will ensure that no harm comes my child’s way. He is our Protector, who puts us in the right place, at the right time. I believe there is a place for children on mission trips together with their parents. The experience of serving together as a family is vital for children to witness that mission and servanthood are important tenets of their parents’ faith. I strongly encourage parents to take a step of faith to bring their children on a mission trip and experience God together as a family. 샂

ecently, there has been a strong awakening to the role of a father in the parenting of a child. Studies all agree that fathers play an important role in their children’s lives and not just in the formative years, but into adulthood and beyond. In fact, while what we do as a father may change as our family grows, the place and role of a father is evergreen. In passages like Deuteronomy 6, the Bible makes clear that fathers (and mothers) have a role to play in teaching and imparting God's laws and ways in the family. So what comprises the role of the father? I would use the acronyms R.O.L.E.

R: Role Knowing. I am involved in a few fathering movements and someone once asked me quite out of the blue, “What is the role of a father?” My instinctive response was: to reflect the character and goodness of the Father in Heaven. I believe

in life. Fathers are not just responsible but also privileged to be the ones well placed to do this, as God is our Father too.

O: Overall parenting. Having a holistic perspective to parenting not only helps us to raise balanced children but also mature ones. In a highly driven modern city, parents tend to skew their parenting efforts towards meeting the academic and intellectual needs of their children. However the children will have an incomplete and unbalanced development if academic competencies are emphasized at the expense of other areas, such as their physical or emotional growth needs. Vitally, fathers must sustain focus and effort in nurturing the child’s soul in order to build character and impart values, and nurturing the body, mind, soul and spirit of the child with equal importance. L: Learn to father well. A father needs to learn continually. Most of

the time, fathers know what they do not know, but there are always new situations where they will not know what they do not know. With many sources of fathering programs and courses available, God has really blessed Singapore richly (if you wish to know, pls contact me, davidang1995@ yahoo.com). Another great source of learning is from the very child you are parenting. When we keep our hearts and ears open and focused on what the child says or tries to say, we can learn a lot about how to be a great father to them. A further source of learning is from the child’s mother. Ask her and some very interesting revelations would be unearthed. I always find myself surprised and edified by my wife, Amy’s perspectives whenever I ask for her thoughts on our children.

E: Eternity. Father with your eyes on eternity. We know that everything on this earth will pass and fade away, and only God and His Kingdom will reign in eternity. That is what really counts. We need to teach our children how to build on foundations that will really last and count in the end. The Bible declares that only the Word of God and the souls of men and women will remain. The Community that fulfils the Great Commission Nowadays, churches cast their own vision and mission statements, which I believe is a good thing as each church has its own local conditions, history and culture. But no vision or mission statements can deviate far from a church’s most basic calling, which is to bring the gospel to every corner of the world, that all peoples may become disciples of the Lord, and to pass on this faith to the future generations. The church in essence is thus a Great Commission community. Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20 commanded us to “Go!” This is a command, a charge to take action. In fact we are to be proactive and determined in bringing the gospel to all mankind. How do we go about doing that? We have many channels, such as Gospel Tea Fellowship/Sundays, Chinese New Year/ Mid-Autumn/ Christmas Evangelistic meetings, Alpha Course, D2B (from Doubting to Believing in God) programme… In particular, Methodists use “love others as yourself ” social services to convey God’s love and truth, that many may be led to seek the real meaning of life and so be brought close to God. But what is really behind all these channels? It is the disciple’s life. Evangelism is not about programmes or gatherings but about disciples’ lives The majority of outreach and evangelism ministry in churches is community centred. Take for example, evangelistic meetings-Gospel Sundays, Alpha Course, Gospel Tea Fellowships are all group activities. We often think that just by participating in such gatherings or bringing guests that we doing our part in evangelism. But all this achieve to create in us an attitude of dependence on

I am convinced that evangelism is not some activity that disciples participate in, but rather evangelism should be a disciple’s life – an evangelist’s life. An evangelist, no matter where or when, never forgets to lead someone to Christ – whether it’s an old classmate one bumped into on the MRT, or a stranger asking for directions along the road, or the stall holder you meet frequently at the hawker centre. Every now and then, a high school friend would meet me for a meal, and we would catch up on the latest news about our families, and views on various current issues. A few weeks ago, he suddenly told me that next year when he turns 55 years of age, he plans to be baptised, and asked if I could baptise him. I was overcome with thankfulness for I know his wife has been praying for him with great perseverance for many years. A disciple who lives out the life of an evangelist does not wait for the church to arrange or plan activities, but is one who is multiplying disciples within

Revival needs the fire of evangelism to burn in our lives The Conference has a set of Chinese and English materials entitled “Caring Evangelism”, for building the lifestyle of an evangelist and for imparting skills on evangelism. The evangelist comes to renew his relationship with God, and thus learn to listen to the objects of evangelism who have an emptiness in their lives that only God can fill. They help others to foster relationships with God and to witness for christ. I really think this programme is something that all disciples must go through after they have been baptised. May 24 is the day we commemorate John Wesley’s own revival. He once said, “The world is my parish.” The Methodists, as a evangelistic community is fervent about testifying for Christ. Let us continue to ignite the flame, and bring light to this terrestrial expanse! Through the Aldersgate lecture series on May 21, 23-24, “Catch the Flame – the Wesleyan Pursuit of Holiness”, let us together pass on our tradition. 샂

his own circles. I know a brother who indeed lives out such a life. He started a football team and invited a few prebeliever youths that he knew, to come and play football with some youths from the church, thus providing opportunities for sharing the gospel. There is another brother, who travels often, but no matter where he goes, he always takes the opportunity to share his faith with others. Once when he was on a flight, he shared his testimony to the stranger sitting next to him, and even led him to believe Jesus. When you talk to him, you can sense his enthusiasm and joy in evangelism.
