he idea of having a family ministry platform was mooted about 2 years ago by then CAC President Rev Chong Chin Chung who gathered a team who shared the same deep passion. Mother Theresa was once asked how world peace can be achieved and her answer was "to go home and love your family". When the family is strong, so will the church community be strong; thus the society and nation would be strong too. This concept is embedded in the Chinese word for nation ‫ ࡌݚ‬which consists of the country and family characters. Family is the best platform to influence and build one’s life, where schools, churches and other communities play a complementary role. The key focus of BOFL is to impact the families in our

churches first; then have our values system and belief impact outside the church. The Board is set up to raise the awareness of the importance of helping members build their family lives in the midst of a busy church calendar. We believe that if families in churches are healthy, the Pastors will have less to worry about as the parish will be filled with healthy souls. One thing which I personally feel strongly about is family altar and worship and with it fathers / parents will take a leadership role in the spiritual life of the family members. Hence, spiritual discipleship takes place at home and not be left just to the church. When we turn every home into a church, the Kingdom of God would be completely different. • 2 • 2017

New Methodist Bishop takes office

ishop Dr Chong Chin Chung, 61, took office as the new Bishop of The Methodist Church in Singapore (MCS) at his Episcopal Consecration Service, held 2 December 2016 at Queenstown Chinese Methodist Church and Faith Methodist Church. In response to his consecration, he said: “I thank God for His many blessings on the Methodist Church. I am prompted to be strong and courageous, just as God told Joshua in the Bible: ‘Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.’ I am grateful

for the many Methodist members who have been interceding for me, supporting me through prayer. I echo Methodism’s founder, John Wesley, who said that ‘The best of all is, God is with us!’ � An estimated 1,000 attendees were at the Consecration Service to witness the dedication of their new Bishop by several Methodist guest Bishops from Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Taiwan. The new Bishop’s wife and two of his three adult children, who are locally-based, were present in support.

Attendees at the Service included 120 Methodist pastors, and 240 choral and orchestral performers. Bishop Dr Chong Chin Chung has been a Methodist pastor for the past 32 years, and was elected as President of the Chinese Annual Conference in 2008, and re-elected to the same post in 2012. During his term as CAC President, he saw to the formation of the Conference’s Board of Family Life, in response to climbing divorce rates, and the complex challenges of work-life balance and parenting in a demanding environment.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care? Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?

he year 2016 has ended. A new year, 2017, has just begun. As we celebrate and look forward to yet another year, let us recall with gratitude and thanksgiving the many blessings God has bestowed upon us in the past year. The psalmist declares in Psalm 40:5, “Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.” Indeed, as you count your many blessings and name them one by one, it will surprise you what the Lord has done! Written in 1897 by Johnson Oatman, Jr.(1856-1922), “Count Your Blessings” is a hymn for all seasons; a hymn we can sing in times of sadness as well as joy. The repeated refrain “count your

blessings name them one by one, count your blessings see what God has done” exhorts us to remember and be grateful for God’s many blessings in our life. When we feel sad, lost and discouraged in the midst of the storms of life, counting our blessings will help lift up our spirits and focus on the blessings of God rather than the woes of life. The Psalmist often recalls the goodness of God in the past for assurance and strength for the present and hope for the future. So when we are burdened with a load of care or when the cross seems too heavy to bear, we could sing away our doubts if we count our blessings of what God had done! The third stanza reminds us that God’s blessing is spiritual, something money or wealth can never buy. We need not envy the “lands and gold” that others

have for our reward is in heaven, our home on high! As Ephesians 1:3 states, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” The final stanza is an assurance that God cares and is over all conflicts; He will provide the comfort and help needed in life’s struggles and conflicts till the end of our journey on earth. “Count Your Blessings” was set to music by E. O. Excell (1900) who also arranged and harmmized the 19th century American melody that is used for “Amazing Grace.” Although Johnson Oatman Jr. died in Oklahoma in 1922, his song continues to encourage and minister to Christians around the globe today! Let us continue to count our blessings and praise God in the New Year! Amen.

Dr & Mrs Douglas E Wingeier – Foochow Methodist Church Kindergarten Western missionaries who left for Singapore from their distant motherland, working amongst the Chinese, living as if they were the reincarnate Christ and leading people to Him. Today, as we remember their life stories and contributions to the local missions, education and medical care as well as their ministry heritage, we are exhorted to go forth as we catch the baton, serving in ministries beneficial to the church, the community and the nation.

he Wingeiers had an important impact in the 1960s on two Chinese Singapore churches, a bilingual kindergarten and Trinity Theological College. On arriving in Singapore with his family on December 31, 1962, Dr Douglas E Wingeier taught at Trinity Theological College, serving also as a pastor at Foochow Methodist Church (FMC) and Queenstown Chinese Methodist Church. At the same time, his wife, Carol A Wingeier focused her energies on children’s and women’s ministries at FMC, eventually becoming the founding principal of FMC Kindergarten. Dr and Mrs Wingeier’s fruitful mission and ministry together began when they were married in 1952. Both came from Christian backgrounds. She was active in Sunday School from a young age, later studying in Georgia State College for Women, and active in the Wesley Foundation Group which gave

her the opportunity to grow in the Lord. After marriage she helped with Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, deepening her interest in early childhood education. She later followed her interest with a Master’s degree specializing in Early Childhood around 1971.

community outreach. Mrs. Carol Wingeier offered to help, given her background and interest in early childhood education, and the church made her the founding principal of FMC Kindergarten. This was an extension of her missionary service, she was not remunerated for this role.

When Dr Wingeier finished his PhD in Religious Education at Boston University they sought appointment with the Board of Missions to be missionaries in Asia. Part of their preparation included learning Mandarin full-time at the University of Yale. Commissioned by Bishop James K. Mathews, they set off for Singapore in 1962, and even continued their Mandarin language training with Rev Peter Hsieh, TTC Dean, so that they could be fluent.

With God’s blessings, in 1964, two kindergarten classes were established with many children came from the neighbourhood. FMC Kindergarten was the first to be certified as a bilingual kindergarten. It was officially registered with the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 1965.

Taking up the positions of Lecturer in Christian Education and Director of Field Education at TTC, both husband and wife were also appointed as missionaries to Foochow Methodist Church. They served FMC from 1963 to 1966, often preaching in the newly started English ministry. Their fourth child Philip Douglas was born and baptized in FMC in the 1960s. While Dr Wingeier preached at the pulpit, Mrs Wingeier was helping out in Sunday School as well as the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS). With successful outreach for neighbourhood Sunday Schools in Kim Keat and Sennett Estate, FMC Local Church Executive Committee (LCEC) in 1963 decided to setup a Kindergarten within the Church as a

In 1966, the Wingeier family returned to the United States for furlough and came back to Singapore about a year later. Dr. Wingeier continued his missionary work in Queenstown Chinese Methodist Church and Mrs Wingeier continued her Sunday School work in FMC. In 1970, the Wingeier family returned to the United States and Dr. Wingeier became professor of practical theology at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois to round off a career stretching 45 years. Now retired from the active ministry, they live in North Carolina. Dr Wingeier continues to teach, write, and engage in peace activism. The talk on Internet Addiction has made me reflect on the environment that we live in and the state of my reliance on Internet. We have become "screen starers". We stare at the screens of our mobile phones on our way to work. We stare at our laptops when we are at work. We stare at our mobile devices when we are off work and at home. We stare at the screen

My mobile phone has become a "cannot do without" device. I need my daily dosage of online injection. I feel uncomfortable if I don't check out Facebook, refresh my work emails (even

after work), read digital sports news… The talk is a timely reminder that with or without all the Internet, we still have God and are disciples of God. He alone is what we need in our lives. As we move forward with the comfort of technological advancement, I pray that our relationship with God will not deteriorate. As we stay connected to the world through Internet, I pray that we will not become disconnected from God. May we hold onto Him tightly and not the Internet for He grants us life, not the Internet!

Conference-supported Punggol Preaching Point Rev Edmund Koh Changi MC

he harvest is indeed plentiful, but the labourers are few. Help spread the Gospel in Punggol!

Punggol Preaching Point (PPP) is a conference-supported project led by Changi Methodist Church (CMC). Since 2011, CMC has adopted Punggol as its mission field. Today, CMC runs a Boys’ Brigade (BB) and a Girls’ Brigade (BG) company in Greendale Primary School in Punggol. It has also partnered with Methodist Welfare Service to set up a centre for Family Works Community Services (FWCS) for the Punggol outreach. FWCS has run the Rainbows program for children/youth from single-parent families in 2 primary schools and 2 secondary schools in Punggol. To invite the children from BB, GB and the Rainbows together with their families to church, CMC organizes familyoriented events regularly.

CMC is a small church with limited human and financial resources. The initial start-up ministry costs in Punggol were borne by the Johnny and Nancy fund—a church-planting fund made available under CAC. Subsequently, CAC set up a pro-tem committee made up of members from different CAC churches to support this project. All the ministries we have launched are done without having a physical location in Punggol, but now we are convinced that a physical location in Punggol is crucial to our mission. With the help of the pro-tem committee, a bungalow at Ponggol Seventeenth Ave was rented by CMC in the last quarter of 2016. It will be used as a Family Life Centre, a focal point for the ministry in Punggol. The protem committee has also embarked on a roadshow to present the needs of PPP to

other CAC churches. The costs of running PPP, including staff salary, rental, and ministry expenses, have increased to about $125,000 a year. am afraid of doctors and will try my best to avoid them. When I noticed that I might have a serious health problem, I turned to the Lord in prayer, hoping that through divine healing, I need not consult a doctor and undergo a surgery. But the Lord’s way is higher than my way. A dear colleague of mine suggested that I consult a doctor about my health problem, and even volunteered to look for a good doctor for me. In order not to disappoint her, I accepted her offer but it had to wait till I had finished some important assignments. Soon after completing those assignments, I developed a bad cough and eventually it became so serious that I had breathing difficulties. Reluctantly I went with my colleague to see a doctor who referred me to a consultant. After some preliminary examination, the consultant decided to follow up closely with my condition, and even advised that if her clinic was unable to allocate a time slot for me to see her immediately, she would go to the Emergency Room to see me there. Thank God! I was given a time slot at her clinic despite the long waiting list. During the first consultation with the doctor, I fended off any surgery. Nevertheless, I finally gave in and the operation date was fixed four days later.

Sweeps Over Me questions in my mind. However, the Lord reminded me of His word in Psalm 91:14 “Because he has set his love upon me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known my name.” His words of life and truth helped me overcome my fears. Praise be to God, that on the day before the operation, I experienced a sense of peace and calmness. His words in Ps 91:14 has swept over me.

The Lord had overturned the doctor’s preliminary diagnosis and He reigns over all circumstances. During my stay at the hospital, I was overwhelmed by the love and prayers from many friends and colleagues. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Indeed, we serve an awesome God! Amen.

Sanctifying Grace,

Not Hyper-Grace Rev Dr Edwin Tay TTC Lecturer

“

ow that I’m a Christian, why should I ask God for forgiveness since he has already forgiven all of my sins when I received Christ as my Lord and Savior?” Although I have forgotten her actual words, this is the gist of the question posed to me by a sister in Christ several years ago. Our answers to it may result in either the continuing significance of repentance in our Christian life or its subsequent irrelevance. The Christian’s repentance has become a rather pressing issue in recent years due to the popularity of a form of teaching on God’s grace that contravenes mainstream Christian teaching and practice on the subject. Some critics of this popular teaching have described it as the doctrine of hyper-grace. One reason for its popularity lies in its mixture of Gospel truths with serious errors regarding what those truths mean for Christian living. For instance, hypergrace teaching may affirm the message of the Gospel, but draw the implication that seeking God’s forgiveness of our sins after becoming a Christian is inappropriate since Christians have already been forgiven in Christ.

We will be in serious trouble as Methodist Christians if we embrace the teaching of hyper-grace. It will be impossible for us to engage in corporate worship with integrity because it is the practice of Methodist Christians to confess our sins corporately and privately as the church universal has always done. At Communion services, for instance, the Methodist liturgy requires us to confess our failure to “love God with our whole heart” and“ to be an obedient church.” 1 Thus, we conclude our confession with a plea for God to “forgive us” and “free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord.” 2 Dissonance between Methodist practice and the doctrine of hypergrace makes it necessary for us to face the following question seriously: Why do Methodist Christians continue to confess and repent of our sins after conversion? Some answers can be

found in one of our doctrinal authorities known as the Methodist Articles of Religion. Our Articles of Religion are statements of Christian doctrine that attempt to summarize Biblical teaching and Christian orthodoxy on a variety of topics. Article XII deals with the topic, “Of Sin After Justification.” It reads as follows: Not every sin willingly committed after justification is the sin against the Holy Ghost, and unpardonable. Wherefore, the grant of repentance is not to be denied to such as fall into sin after justification. After we have received the Holy Ghost, we may depart from grace given, and fall into sin, and, by the grace of God, rise again and amend our lives. And therefore they are to be condemned who say they can no more sin as long as they live here; or deny the place of forgiveness to such as truly repent. 3 Among a number of Biblical truths

that Article XII captures, I will call attention to only two for our purpose. The first is the truth that Christians can “depart from grace given and fall into sin after justification.” Saying this is not to call into question the finished work of Christ’s atonement for our every sin, past, present and future. Article XX makes it clear that Christ’s offering on the cross is a “once for all” and “perfect” work of atonement.4 Granting the reality of “sin willingly committed after justification” suggests that inherent in Article XII is the truth that sin remains in believers. How then do we make sense of the twofold reality that our sins have been dealt with decisively by Christ, yet sin remains in us? John Wesley, in his sermon “On Sin in Believers”, raises the point this way: “But can Christ be in the same heart where sin is?” He then answers: “Undoubtedly he can…Christ indeed cannot reign where sin reigns; neither will he dwell where any sin is allowed. But he is and dwells in the heart of every believer who is fighting against all sin...” 5 In other words, sin remains but does not reign in the justified believer. Recognizing that sin remains but no longer has dominion should drive us to war against it so that it “grows weaker

and weaker, while the believer goes on from strength to strength, conquering and to conquer.” 6 The second truth taught in Article XII is that of the Christian’s repentance. There are two errors to avoid in thinking of repentance: (1) claiming that justified believers “can no more sin as long as they live here”; (2) denying “the place of forgiveness” for believers who do sin. The former makes repentance irrelevant for the Christian. The latter makes it impossible. The balance of Biblical truth is seen in affirming that while sin remains in the justified believer, forgiveness of sins is available “to such as truly repent.” Article XII offers a vision of the Christian life that takes sin in the believer and the sanctifying grace of God seriously. While it admits that believers “may depart from grace given, and fall into sin”, it also offers hope that we may “by the grace of God, rise again and amend our lives.” In his sermon, “The Repentance of Believers”, Wesley explains that repentance and faith go together.7 Rising again after we fall requires God’s sanctifying grace that brings us both to repentance from sin and faith in his promise to “save to the uttermost” (Heb

7:25). God is able and willing to do more with our sins than forgive them. Not only has God settled the debt of our sins by the death of his Son, he is rooting out the sins that remain and healing our brokenness to perfect us in love. Why do Methodist Christians continue to confess and repent of our sins? Unless we claim to be sinless, or are dishonest, or explain away the relevance of Biblical texts on the believer’s confession of sin and repentance (cf. 1 John 1:9, James 5:16, 2 Cor 7:9-10 and Rev 3:19), our simple answer is the remnant of sin in our lives and the power of God’s grace in Christ to sanctify us. It is sanctifying grace, not hyper-grace that the Wesleyan tradition teaches.

Imitating Christ’s humility

A

n iconic picture of Christmas is of a little baby lying in a manger, surrounded by Joseph and Mary, and a few others. But the main character is that baby. The Lord’s messengers announced to the shepherds that the Messiah who will save the world, has been born. And the sign to identify him is: a baby lying in a manger. “This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:12) Why is the sign of the birth of God’s son a baby in a manger? What message does God have for us? I believe it must be about humility. Humility is at the heart of a disciple’s life. Because of the Lord’s humility, we have received the gracious gift of becoming the children of God; because of the Lord’s humility, we can listen to the truth of God’s kingdom; because of the Lord’s humility, we are able to experience God’s love. Christ is showing to the world that the real meaning to life is humility.

Thus when we serve God, humility should be demonstrated clearly in our lives and attitude. We tend to see where others have gone wrong, but forgetting that we too make mistakes. We often compare others’ weakness against our strengths, forgetting that others may have strengths that we lack. In Matthew 7:1-5, Jesus taught us: “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul reminded us to have the same mindset as Christ, which is one of humility: “Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing , taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of man. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:3-11)

For we require other people to be perfect, but do not correct our own faults.” In this new year, let us imitate Christ’s humility, and together walk the heavenly journey! “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
