ORGANIC SEED PROGRAM AND ASSORTMENT 2020-2021 bejo.com f
ORGANIC, RIGHT FROM THE START In the 1990s, Bejo was among the first breeders to take the step to make organic an integral part of its business. Being a conventional and organic breeder is a wonderful cross fertilization. On the one hand, organic production brings on inspiration and new ideas for conventional production. On the other hand, we can build our organic business on the knowledge, experience and infrastructure that we have built in the last century. At Bejo, breeding for organic is leveraging our broad genetic base and the latest technologies. Breeding for organic allows us to develop high yielding varieties with improved resilience, produce high-quality seeds and stimulate innovation. With our organic seeds we contribute to a sustainable supply chain of healthy and tasty food, RIGHT from the START.
IMPROVED COATING & NEW COLOUR FOR ORGANIC SEED The advantage of seed coating in general is that it ensures a smoother seed surface and less dust development from the seed, resulting in improved sowing. A coloured coating also makes the seed more visible in the soil. In order to make our organic seed clearly distinguishable from our non-chemically treated seed, we introduced a new coating for organic seed. The new organic coating has a yellowish colour and was launched in September 2020. Our non-chemically treated seed coating remains white.
SUSTAINABLE COATING In line with our conventional seed, the new yellowish coating for organic seed and the white coating for non-chemically treated seed both transitioned to the new sustainable coating recipe.
CHARACTERISTICS NEW SUSTAINABLE COATING: Made of natural materials Decomposes completely X Improved preservation of seed vitality X Significant drying time reduction X Less energy consumption, less environmental impact X Approved by the organic authorities X X
The production of organic seeds with the new coating has started in September 2020. During the phaseout period, customers may receive organic seed with a white or yellowish coating until December 2022. The new yellowish colour for organic coating reacts slightly differently to different crops: Onion

Boga onion set awarded!
One of the biggest problems in organic onion cultivation is downy mildew, a fungal plant disease. Boga onion set, a new onion set variety resistant to downy mildew, won the title “Organic product of the year” at the Biobeurs fair in January 2020.
ORGANIC QUALITY INSIDE ONION SETS We continue to develop our offer for the organic grower. Recently Bejo introduced high quality organic onion sets, cultivated according to the ‘Quality inside’ protocol. These onion sets can be used for organic early cultivation.
STRAIGHT FROM THE BREEDER
MILDEW RESISTANT ONION SETS
For organic onion sets production, we work together with organic seed and planting stock specialist Carel Bouma. Broer BV takes care of the storage, processing, packaging and logistics of the onion sets. Both fully follow the ‘Quality inside’ protocol. The varieties are part of the ‘Quality inside’ range of Bejo/De Groot and Slot, offering unique genetics, a fully controlled and traceable cultivation system and a high-quality control standard.
The organic Quality Inside range includes high-quality onion sets such as Redlander and Boga, both with a high resistance to downy mildew (HR: Pd), therefore an excellent choice for the organic onion grower. Growing from sets also reduces weed pressure and is less labour-intensive.

Organic Seed Program and Assortment 2020 - 2021
Sustainable cultivation with a high yield, exceptional product quality and – ultimately – healthy and tasty food; it all starts with the best seeds of the best varieties, RIGHT FROM THE START. With organic seed we stand together at the base of a sustainable and healthy food chain, for ourselves as well as for future generations. As a family business we strongly believe in this approach as it is in line with our core values: long term perspective, innovation and respect for people and nature. Over the years we have invested considerably in our organic processes, infrastructure and assortment, contributing to a sustainable supply chain that starts with organic seed. And we will continue to do so.
BREEDING FOR ORGANIC We are of the opinion that modern hybrids with a high degree of uniformity fit very well in modern organic farm systems. Breeding for organic is a way of selecting suitable crosses, selections or existing varieties at the earliest possible stage to fit the organic seed program. Potential varieties are selected directly from the initial breeder’s conventional trial field and tested under organic conditions in the target sales area. This way Bejo has maximum choice of genetic material for its organic program to meet the desired variety traits.
