In a team of four designers, we set out to design a full service high-end, luxury restaurant that will become a destination for the Ritz-Carlton Hotel located in Chicago, Illinois. The American Thai Fusion cuisine blends traditional flavors of the east with a contemporary western twist that creates a savory menu that welcomes world travelers and the surrounding residents of Chicago.
Concept: Thai cuisine is known for being balanced, detailed and diverse, and so too, is our concept for The Paper Lantern. By fusing western with eastern ideologies, we gathered inspiration from earth, wind, fire, and the natural elements that bind them. We also incorporated the paper lantern by incorporating the beauty of light that illuminates them.

Process Sketches
The design challenge for this project was to design a restaurant based on a set menu that compliments the fusion of American and Thai cuisines while maintaining the values of The Ritz-Carlton brand.
Layout Studies
Location of bar too far from Dining Room
Entertainment area takes away from seating availability
Angled banquette seating creates poor circulation for servers
Floor Plan Based on the furniture layout we were able to provide a clear path of travel from the kitchen to the dining room. The placement of the bar also allows servers and guests to easily transition from the lounge to the formal dining area.

Bar & Lounge
The design of the bar and lounge is designed with a playful approach to using fire and light as the concept. To accomplish this we used abstract lantern that mimics fire and illuminated the inside of the lattice wrapped columns.

Concept
We wanted the dining room to be both dynamic and luxurious. To accomplish this we created feature lighting with lanterns and traditional Thai umbrellas. The central fountain provides a graceful sound of water as a backdrop to the dining room.

The transparent glass wall was inspired by the silhouettes and shadows that fire illuminates. The large lantern statues create a dramatic frame for the servers to bring the guests their cuisine.
