A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

1

Dear Members of the Sanford Community, I am grateful and humbled as I write my welcome for this issue of our Sanford magazine, which includes our 2013–2014 Annual Report of Giving. Last year our community rallied to support multiple fundraising efforts, each of which benefitted our students, Sanford’s programs, and most importantly the health and future of our school. Sanford’s Annual Fund raised $446,890, a five percent increase from the previous year. One hundred percent of our faculty and staff gave to the effort, as did our trustees. Seventy-eight percent of Sanford’s current parents participated in the Annual Fund, as did eleven percent of our alumni. Thank you to all of our donors who generously supported the work of our teachers and students. As always, you made a difference.

In April, Sanford Rocked the Queen at our Home & School Association Auction. The party was awesome—as was the amount of money raised from the event. Sanford’s Home & School Association gave the school over $100,000, which was used to improve scoreboards and bleachers on the athletic fields, and proceeds also funded new playground space for our Lower School. Lastly, Sanford publicly launched our Front & Center Campaign, the school’s first capital campaign in over a decade. Front & Center has already generated over $4.8 million in gifts and pledges. These funds will be used for the renovation of Quigley Hall, the du Pont Library, and Geipel Gymnasium. Sanford programs will have new and/or renovated homes for performing arts, college/career counseling, the Upper School library, student dining, visual arts, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Members of the Sanford community are joining the effort each week, and I encourage you to consider making your gift to the Front & Center effort. We still have work to do and additional funds to raise in order to make these ambitious plans a reality. The culture of giving our community has displayed during the last few years and especially in 2013–14 gives us every reason to feel optimistic about Sanford’s continued success and positive trajectory. Thank you again for your support.

ecent visitors to Sanford have probably noticed that something is different. The green grass and play areas outside of Geipel Gymnasium have been replaced by dirt and construction equipment. Bulldozers and backhoes are busily grading the field behind the iconic Geipel Gymnasium, which has marked the entrance to the school since the mid-twentieth century.

The heavy machinery is just the first sign of the change underway in Hockessin. This spring, Sanford officially launched Front & Center, a $7 million capital campaign that will revitalize three historic buildings on campus. Sanford’s first capital campaign in more than a decade, Front & Center is designed to carry out the goals of the school’s strategic plan, Ambition in Action: to provide “wellconceived and executed facilities that will nurture our students’ talents and inspirations.”

Front & CenterThe Campaign for Sanford School Front & Center The Campaign for Sanford School Front & CenterThe Campaign for Sanford School With money raised by Front & Center, Sanford’s leadership seeks to fund a range of ambitious and welcome improvements to the school’s facilities for the visual arts; college counseling; student dining; and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). But to find the centerpiece of the campaign, we need look no further than those bulldozers. During the summer of 2014, construction crews broke ground on the new Geipel Center, a state-of-the-art facility that will finally give Sanford’s outstanding performing arts program the venue it deserves. Featuring an extensive renovation of the historic Geipel Gymnasium, accompanied by the brand-new addition of a 425-seat theatre, the new Geipel Center will open the way for Sanford students to innovate and excel in all areas of the performing arts. When I asked Clint Williams, the Music Department Chair, which feature of the new facility he was most anticipating, he rattled off a long list. Separate rooms for band and choir rehearsals. A scene shop and climate-controlled costume and prop storage for the

acclaimed Sanford Repertory Theatre Company. A music technology lab. Six private lesson rooms. Space for brand-new classes in acting, lighting design, and set design, taught by theatre professionals from the wider Delaware community. “But the thing I’m the most excited about,” he finally said, “is allowing our students to perform concerts in an actual concert hall.” Clint has been working closely with Scheu Consulting Services, a theatrical design company, on specifications for the orchestra pit and acoustic features of the new theatre. “An orchestra in the pit—that’s something that Sanford audiences have never seen,” he explained. “Performing on a stage is different than performing in a reformed gym.” He won’t have to wait long for the curtain to rise. With construction underway, the new Geipel Center is on target to open in September 2015. But as any Sanford performer can attest, it’s taken a long time to get to this point. I spoke with Thomas Allingham, a Sanford board member and one of the co-chairs (with Kathy Nachbar) of Front & Center. He explained that when the Board of Trustees first started to

The construction of the new Geipel Center is well underway. The building will provide students, teachers, and audiences with a beautiful state-of-the-art facility that matches the caliber of our programs and community.

explore the idea of a capital campaign, in 2011 and 2012, it quickly became clear that the Geipel Center was the “most pressing need. Geipel was really substandard for such a good performing arts program.”

Above: Quigley Hall will be renovated to give students a new, updated dining experience, new college counseling facilities, and a new Upper School Library.

As the campaign steering committee worked with architects to agree on a design, they quickly agreed on another priority: preserving the historic Geipel Gym. Geipel was built by Sanford students in the mid-twentieth century. The committee worked out a plan to renovate the existing building in a way that would preserve its iconic silhouette and some of its materials, including the original bricks laid by students.

“Although you will see the new Geipel Center as a very impressive building at the gateway to our campus,” Tom Allingham said, “alumni will recognize the bones of the existing Geipel. A lot of this is careful husbanding of the original materials.” (Architect’s renderings of the Geipel Center plan can be found on the campaign’s website, at www.sanfordschool.org/frontandcenter.) The balance between preservation and innovation is a hallmark of the other projects in the Front & Center plan. Quigley Hall, the historic farmhouse building that currently houses the Music Department, will be renovated to provide updated dining facilities; a welcoming college counseling environment with interview rooms and a café; and a new, internet-based Upper School Library and Learning Center. Casey Zimmer, Sanford’s Director of College Counseling, explained that the new facilities will enable the school to bring senior projects, college counseling, and career advice under the same umbrella, in order to create a more “robust upper school experience.” College counseling will be more equipped not only to help students find the colleges that are the “best fit” for their personalities, but also to help them explore career options and network with Sanford alumni. Furthermore, Casey explained, “there’s something really symbolic about the move. ... If there is one recognizable building left [from the original campus], it’s Quigley. From a symbolic perspective,

Front & CenterThe Campaign for Sanford School Front & Center The Campaign for Sanford School Front & CenterThe Campaign for Sanford School there’s something really neat about having that be the center for helping kids figure out the next step in their lives.” When counseling and the Upper School Library have moved into the new Quigley, the beautiful du Pont building will become the new home of the Visual Arts department. “It’s a perfect space for visual arts,” said Tom Allingham. “It’s got tremendous light, it’s got open spaces, it’s got everything you need.” Meanwhile, the lower level of du Pont will be dedicated to STEM education, providing collaborative learning spaces for teachers and students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering, and math. During Homecoming 2014, alumni and the original Geipel builders led the Sanford community in a “Steel Signing” to commemorate the construction of the new Geipel Center. Everyone who wished to take part in the event was able to sign a piece of steel that will be used in the new building, and learn more about what’s in store for Performing Arts at Sanford. Thanks to the generosity of

the Sanford community, the Front & Center campaign has already achieved tremendous success. As of this writing, the campaign has raised $4.8 million of the $7 million goal in gifts and pledges. One hundred percent of board members have given, and Sanford parents have, as always, been incredibly generous. But Front & Center will need continued support from all members of the school community to realize the campaign’s vision for Sanford’s future. As campaign co-chair Kathy Nachbar explained, “My children, ‘Sanford Lifers’ ’05 and ’08, received a great education and loved the school. I want Sanford to be here for other families for years to come, and I believe this campaign will ensure that happens. These improvements to our campus will benefit current students, attract new families, and help Sanford maintain its reputation as an outstanding school.” Please consider making a gift or pledge to support these transformational projects. A gift at any level will help keep Sanford students front and center. The Irene S. du Pont Library will serve as the new home for our visual arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) programs.

her life and was then joined for performances by Sanford students and alumni. Everyone enjoyed Peppermint Patties, caramel creams, and other candy that might have been eaten by the Geipel builders in the 1940s.

Many alumni from the 1940s and 1950s who were involved in the building of Geipel were in attendance and were honored with the school’s annual Alumni Award. The former students traveled from as far as Alabama. Lee Crowthers Reynolds ’54 accepted the award on behalf of all those who lent a hand. Also introduced was Dolly Ann Clark Peress ’54. Her father, Franklin Clark, Sr., drove up from Washington, DC, each weekend to teach the students the skills they needed to build the large gym.

The afternoon’s celebration culminated with the signing of a piece of steel to be used in the new Geipel Center for the Performing Arts. Two children of school founder Ellen Sawin, Bill Sawin ’45 and Marnie Sawin Langerak ’43, led the way, followed by other alumni, current students, parents, alumni parents, faculty and staff.

Following the alumni award presentation, representatives from each current Sanford class assembled a time capsule. Items donated represented the year the students were born. The senior class presented a copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, published in 1997. The eighth grade’s gift was a euro, representing its introduction. And some of our youngest students in the Class of 2027 made a gift of a photo of President Obama, first inaugurated in their birth year of 2009. Alumna Madeline Gondek ’08 spoke to those gathered about the impact that Sanford’s performing arts program had on From right, clockwise: William Sanford Sawin ’45, son of Sanford’s founder, is the first to sign the steel; Charlie Kahler ’27 and Bill Shaw ’50 represent Sanford’s future and past; Alumni from the 1940s enjoyed touring campus and participating in the celebration; Pierce Bagdon refreshes himself before returning to the action of Homecoming Saturday.

The afternoon was a true celebration of Sanford’s proud traditions and its commitment to create a strong legacy for future students.

Growing up at Sanford, the arts always played an essential role in my life. Geipel was home to so many of the life-changing memories that have shaped so much of who I am. I am overjoyed that the time has finally come for the arts at Sanford to find new homes. My support of the Front & Center campaign is my way of honoring the history of the phenomenal programs that helped me through my adolescence. It is also my way of giving back to these programs with the assurance that current and future Sanford students will be able to find themselves through the arts. —Ryan John ’08

anford “Rocked the Queen” on Saturday night, April 26th, when over 250 parents, alumni parents, alumni, faculty, and staff members raised their auction paddles in support of the school. The fun vibe of Wilmington’s Café Live at the Queen, a tempting array of auction items, and dancing made for a great party atmosphere! As a result of the generosity of the Sanford community that evening, the Home & School Association was able to present Sanford with a check for over $100,000. The funds were used to purchase scoreboards and bleachers, update the playground, and complete other projects to enhance our athletic and physical fitness programs. Due to the auction’s success, funds also were directed to a few campus projects including the construction of a new sidewalk. In addition, a highlight of the evening was the announcement of the public phase of Sanford’s first capital campaign in over a decade. Attendees learned more about the plans for the school that will be made possible by the Front & Center campaign. As guests departed, they received a flashlight to help put students “in the spotlight.” Months of work by the auction committee made for an enjoyable and successful evening!

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING

Evergreen Society

2013–2014 Operating Income

The Evergreen Society is representative of the Sanford pine,

Net Tuition $8,504,559 (83.43%)

strong but bending. The society recognizes the commitment members of our community make by choosing to secure the school’s future through a planned gift or including Sanford as a charitable recipient in their wills. Many planned gifts have positive tax benefits in the donor’s lifetime.

Annual Fund $446,940 (4.36%)

The symbolism of the evergreen conveys that the gift these members bestow upon the school will, in fact, provide both shelter and color throughout all seasons of a school’s life—through both the beautiful springs of renewal, the spectacular colors of the fall, and the harshest winters. These seasons parallel not only the life of the student body within a school year, but a school within its life cycle. Through these seasons, the evergreen remains a fixed constant—tall, straight and proud. Those who become members of the Evergreen Society are indeed securing that constancy.

Draw from Endowment $600,000 (5.89%)

This photo depicts the spirit of giving within the Sanford community. Every year the Rufo family

purchases and places campus-wide decorations, including pumpkins, mums, and bales of hay, just before our annual Homecoming celebration—a gift that beautifies our campus throughout the fall. We are grateful for the Rufos’ generosity of time, talent, and treasure. The photo was taken by Ted Rosenthal. A busy Sanford parent and attorney, Ted’s phenomenal photography talents have enabled us to create stunning communications that tell the Sanford story. While we are very thankful for the photographs, we are most appreciative for Ted’s generosity of time, his willingness to help whenever we call upon him, and his initiative and leadership in building our photo library. As we give thanks for the many gifts that Sanford receives every year, please know that we value and honor the blessing of an exceptional community.
