“One of the most recognized leaders of nonviolent resistance is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a school whose foundation was built on principles similar to Dr. King’s teachings of peace, equality, and service to others, Sanford adopted an MLK Day of Service in 2006. Every year on MLK Day, Sanford community members participate in service projects on and off campus. The Food Bank of Delaware, Faithful Friends, Emmanuel Dining Hall, Heifer International, the Latin American Community Center, and Habitat for Humanity are just a few of the many organizations that Sanford has supported.

Although our primary goal on MLK Day is to serve those in need, another key component of the day is ensuring that our students remember the work undertaken by Dr. King throughout his life by focusing on tolerance, peace, and service. To that end, guest speakers, assemblies, and educational activities have been woven into our days of service.” - Mark J. Anderson, Head of School Sanford has embraced service learning as part of our Guiding Principles. Research shows that its benefits not only include building character but also contributing to improved student engagement and academic achievement. Americorps provides resources for MLK Day of Service in the time of COVID. Additionally, the New York Times shares information about how to volunteer or donate to help others this school year.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” - MLK, Jr.
