What is the Annual Fund and why is it important? The Annual Fund is a vital revenue stream for our school. Through the generosity of our community, we can deliver exceptional programs to our students and families. The School’s annual operating budget is based on anticipated tuition and generous gifts from parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, and friends. School leaders must consider both components when developing the budget because tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating our students. When considering whether an Annual Fund gift is important,

remember that your support helps make possible:

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Sanford families, friends, and supporters, It’s our pleasure to share the Fall 2015 edition of SANFORD magazine. In this publication you will read about some of the exciting and defining events of the 2014–15 school year. Also included is a list of the generous friends of Sanford who financially supported the School in the past year. Our school continues to thrive because we meet our challenges and opportunities together as a community. Sanford’s 2013 strategic plan, Ambition in Action, continues to shape and guide the work of the Board and leadership team. The plan’s five tenets—Leadership, Centers of Excellence, Financial Sustainability, Marketing and Retention, and Facilities and Fundraising—have each received much attention, and we have seen progress with each section. As always, there is work to be done, and the trustees and school leaders look forward to continuing our important work. One of the exciting parts of the 2014–15 school year was the work Sanford completed to our facilities—both planned and unplanned. The cornerstone of our Front & Center Campaign, the Geipel Center, has taken shape over the last year. Through the generosity of many members of the community, we are preparing to open the new building in the winter. Two other upgraded facilities opened this fall. Officially part of the Front & Center campaign, the renovation of the Irene S. du Pont Library and the Pirnie STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Lab were accelerated by the damage caused by two burst pipes in the library and in the lower school in February 2015. When we include the renovations of Sanford Hall (fall 2013) and the Geipel Center (winter 2016), the school will have renovated and reopened five buildings in two years! As our strategic plan title indicated, we are both ambitious and ready for action! As exciting as our campus improvements are, please know that it continues to be the people who define Sanford. Our students, teachers, staff, parents, alumni, and alumni parents are the heart of the Sanford community. Similarly, the relationship between Sanford students and teachers continues to differentiate our school. The spaces can be renovated, the technology changes, and the program grows; however the thing that never changes is the commitment of our teachers to our students. Sanford teachers continue to offer the exceptional experience that changes students’ lives. We thank you for your support in 2014–15 and look forward to continuing to share the news and success of our current school year soon. Best,

Mark J. Anderson, Head of School

Sanford Celebrates its 85th Birthday with a Facelift

birthday provides the perfect opportunity to take stock of the present, reflect on the past, and prepare for the future. As Sanford celebrates its 85th year as an academic institution, this is a good time to do just that. Head of School Mark Anderson mused, “The blend of the past, present, and future feels very Sanford-like to me. For 85 years we have been a great school, and we honor that legacy.” In 1930 when Ellen Sawin and Elsie Pond opened the doors of Sanford Hall and greeted the first seven students to what was then called Sunny Hills School, could they have ever dreamt that it would become a place that would grow and thrive into the center for learning that it is today? continued on page 4

The re-dedication of Pirnie Hall included a ribbon cutting ceremony led by representatives from Sanford’s leadership team and the upper school student body.

uite possibly, as Sanford and Ellen Sawin, the school’s founders, were visionary leaders who believed in providing an enthusiastic, caring, and harmonious education to students that would allow all of their talents to develop. The Sawins would undoubtedly be pleased to know that the first academic building, Sanford Hall, is currently home to both the Head of School’s office and Admissions and serves as visitors’ first welcome to campus. While the Sawins would recognize the exterior of Sanford Hall, they might be surprised by some of the other changes and expansions on campus. Three of Sanford’s birthday “presents” this year are: • The newly renovated and

repurposed Pirnie Hall

• The restoration and reinvention

of the Irene S. du Pont Library

• The transformation of Geipel

Gymnasium into the Geipel Center for the Performing Arts.

“These projects honor Sanford’s past while providing learning spaces with modern amenities, allowing our students to enjoy the finest education and experience,” stated Anderson. The appreciation for what Sanford represents was celebrated on September 13 when families, faculty, staff, alumni, special guests, and community members gathered for ribbon cutting ceremonies to officially open Pirnie Hall and du Pont Library. With the completion of the Geipel Center for the Performing Arts eagerly anticipated, hard hat tours were offered for attendees to see the progress first-hand. The start of a new school year is typically a time of great anticipation and positive energy, and the ceremonial opening of new facilities added to the excitement on campus. The Sawins would not be the only ones surprised to see the campus changes. Former Middle School Administrative Assistant Dottie Andrews and her husband Rick returned to Sanford for the first time in several years to participate in the day’s festivities. They left the afternoon events in awe of the changes. “I cannot wait for [my daughter] Kristin [Class of 2004] to see for herself just how beautiful these new buildings are. The campus has been greatly enhanced, and I am sure the students will benefit because of it,” gushed Andrews.

Pirnie Hall Renovated and Repurposed Pirnie Hall currently houses the

Technology Department and the stateof-the-art STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Lab. Students now have at their disposal a large, open, fully equipped area in which to conduct experiments, research, and problem solve. Banks of newly purchased laptops are available for use, along with mounted televisions, an interactive projector, and a wide array of other technology tools. It is, however, the 3D printers that had students racing into the STEM Lab once the ribbon had been cut. These printers offer many options to Sanford students that were previously not available to them. Upper School Math Instructor Ensign Simmons is teaching his Why We Engineer class in the STEM Lab and is utilizing the drafting tables, laptops and 3D printers to collaboratively design and build, while Upper School Science Instructor Mary Meg Mayer is planning to have her biology classes use JMol computer software to design 3-dimensional proteins and print their final projects on 3D printers. Every teacher is busy planning ways to implement the new technology, use the new lab, and design meaningful lessons to develop critical thinkers who are prepared to meet the demands of our dynamic global community. The excitement generated by the STEM Lab is palpable in all three divisions—just the type of positive energy that the Sawins would surely celebrate. Science Department Chair Jim Barnaby said, “It is our hope that this new lab and technology will foster in our students a stronger interest and foundation in all aspects of science, design, and engineering. To that end, every teacher works to ensure our students can apply their learning to creatively solve problems and effectively collaborate with their peers.”

These printers offer many options to Sanford students that were previously not available to them. A portion of Pirnie is home to the Technology Department, a group of dedicated professionals who work behind the scenes to keep apprised of the latest and greatest in technology innovations, order the necessary items, maintain the equipment, troubleshoot, educate and support the faculty, and provide all required resources so students and teachers can do their best work. This small, but vital, department has previously been housed in the basements of buildings, been separated and spread out in various locations throughout campus, been displaced midyear after

the pipes burst in du Pont Library, and still did quality work without complaint. Director of Communications & Marketing Cheryl Fleming, who leads the technology team, explained, “For the first time, the Sanford technology staff now has a unified space that was designed to allow us to complete our tasks in optimum conditions. In addition to having the ability to do private work, we have a dedicated spot for small group collaboration and space to conduct training for groups of up to 10. We could not be happier in our new home.” continued on page 6

du Pont Library Restored and Reinvented Pirnie Hall is not the only place on the Sanford campus that is a source of pride and excitement. The du Pont Library had been earmarked for some cosmetic improvements following the completion of the Geipel Center, but damage from burst pipes that rendered du Pont uninhabitable last winter moved the library from the bottom to the top of the facility improvements wish list.

Sanford was delighted to have Peter Flint, grandson of Irene S. du Pont, for whom the library is named, as an honored guest at the ribbon cutting ceremony when the remodeling of this important campus space was revealed. As Upper School Librarian Sandy Sutty noted, “The library has always been a jewel located in the center of our beautiful campus. It always shined, but now it truly sparkles.” This was, in part, accomplished when Mark Anderson, Upper School Head Lynn Casto, and Facilities Director Kevin Needham decided to install 18 full-panel windows to allow more natural light to fill the room. Needham stated, “It was a great way to bring the outside into the building. The deck in the back of the building provides yet another excellent opportunity for an outdoor classroom or a place for student conversation and relaxation. The results could not be any more stunning!” It would be difficult to

Sophomore Grant Cragg said, “I like the library a lot more because it is much more open and less cramped. I love the access to all the new technology, and I never used the books that were here before.”

dispute that statement. Interior designer Gina Sykora, parent of Julia ’18 and Charlie ’20 and owner of Gina Sykora Interior Design, once again generously shared her talents and worked her own brand of decorative magic by employing the same color palate she has previously used in other Sanford buildings. These subtle shades play off the lighting, while highlighting the openness of the building and its relationship to the surrounding campus. Sykora selected pleasant, yet functional, tables and chairs that can easily be rearranged to accommodate any size group or need. Comfortable stuffed chairs and sofas are equipped with both small arm rests that provide work space and electrical outlets to help keep the technology and creative juices fully charged. Additionally, two small glass enclosed study rooms, also filled with natural light, provide space for private or small group work. The overall effect resembles one more often seen on college campuses, and the students are enjoying this special new study spot.

But the renovations to the du Pont Library go far beyond beautiful windows and lovely new furnishings. One cannot help but notice the absence of books in the space that once housed thousands of volumes. Sutty explained that only adults have questions about this; never the students. A wealth of material is available in the school’s database collection, and she is always willing to get students any print book that might be needed to be successful in a class. A limited selection of books remain, as required to support curriculum, provide opportunities for reading pleasure, and to preserve Sanford’s history. Sophomore Grant Cragg said, “I like the library a lot more because it is much more open and less cramped. I love the access to all the new technology, and I never used the books that were here before.” Sutty explained that Cragg’s comments are supported by the feedback she received early last year from a survey given to students, teachers, and administrators. The findings indicated that the needs of

the Sanford students would be better met if the school shifted from a traditional library to a digital one, making Sanford one of the few high schools in the state to do so. The library, like the STEM Lab, is equipped with new laptops and other technology equipment, providing students with tools for the technological world in which they live and preparing them for the way they will conduct research in college. Additionally, Sutty’s role has shifted from managing books to being a campus-wide resource. Although her focus is on the upper school students and faculty, she assists at all divisional levels with the integration of technology and the use of digital material.

Above: When they’re not exploring outdoor endeavors, members of our Extended Day team and lower school students enjoy the amenities of du Pont Library’s lower level. Right: The upper level of du Pont features a new research-centric digital library that provides a beautiful and spacious setting for school events.

A new after-school home for our younger students Interaction of a different sort takes place just one level below this library hub, which is now the home to the lower school extended day program. Under the guidance of Director Ann Davis, this space offers Sanford’s younger students a place to explore, learn new skills, and relax after a full day of classes. Davis’s goal was to preserve and have “the tone and philosophy of the lower school move with students to extended day. We want the students to feel that our afterschool program is truly an extension of the love and care that they feel in the lower school.” From the rug up, every space is filled with interactive, fun, and educational opportunities. The energy can only be described as instantaneously positive. Davis added that another goal was to, “create bright, cheerful spaces and to provide enriching, varied student experiences.”

Davis’s enthusiasm is contagious, and she was proud to share that she had used the summer to procure gently used equipment such as Foosball tables for both the lower and middle school program, while spending her budgeted funds on enhanced programming for the students. One of the new afterschool program additions is a once-aweek chess program taught by seventime national chess champion Gregory Rogers.

Pride, Preservation, and Best Practices With so much excitement on the upper and lower levels of the du Pont Library, the Sawins and Irene du Pont would have to be proud! The beauty of the building has been preserved and showcased, while students from two divisions are having their educational needs met in a manner that is in keeping with today’s best practices. continued on page 8

he working environment of the Performing Arts Department is about to undergo a major transformation. The construction of the Geipel Center for the Performing Arts continues, with changes to the interior and exterior of the building taking place daily. It was a thoughtful, careful decision on the part of the Board of Trustees and Mark Anderson to follow Sanford’s historical path and keep as much of the original building as possible. Anderson commented that he, and the entire Sanford community, had hoped that the Geipel Center for the Performing Arts would have been opened for the start of the school year. “However,” he said, “building a 445-seat auditorium that is connected to a 65-year-old building is a huge project. The new Geipel Center is not only the largest project Sanford has ever undertaken, it is the first significant construction to happen on our campus in a decade. So, waiting a few more months

to ensure that we would provide the best possible facility for our students was very doable, in the grand scheme. I know we will all be pleased with the end results, and the wait will be well worth it.” Many are eager for the completion of the Geipel renovation and expansion, including Performing Arts Department Chair Clint Williams and all the faculty who instruct with him. They look forward to working and creating in a center that will house six private music studios/practice rooms, three classrooms, a music computer lab, a band room, a choir room, a dance studio, a room for costume storage and another room for prop storage, a sound and light booth, dedicated dressing rooms, a set construction area, an orchestra pit, a music office and 445 seats from which to view the stage. Williams noted, “The new space will allow students more instructional time because the ten different bands and choruses will not be sharing a single space. Additionally, for the first time ever, our ensembles will have the opportunity to regularly perform in a proper acoustical setting, which greatly opens up a broader range of repertoire selections.” Lower School Performing Arts Instructor Cera Babb added, “It is not just the quantity of the classrooms that is so important, but the size and quality of the classrooms will dramatically improve student learning. For instance, our general music classrooms will be larger and allow for more differentiation throughout each lesson.” Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of attending a Sanford musical concert, fall play, or winter musical production knows that Sanford students and faculty have made the best of a less than ideal venue. Babb commented, “One of the biggest

advantages to having a new building is giving the students a place that is worthy of what they are able to achieve. Sanford students work tirelessly to give all in every aspect of their lives. When it comes to concerts, recitals, and shows, students will have a much different experience. Not only will they be able to showcase their work, but they will be able to do so in a space that makes them proud to share that special part of themselves.” In keeping with Sanford’s longstanding commitment to community outreach, the school plans to share this beautiful new performing arts center with musical, theatrical, and dance groups from the entire state of Delaware, some as paid rentals and others as goodwill gestures. Also, for the first time ever, Sanford will be in a position to host All State Chorus rehearsals. What a birthday present this new performing arts center is going to be, not just for Sanford’s 85th but for years to come!

Positioning Sanford for Success T

he gifts of new facilities did not just materialize out of nowhere. What started as exploratory conversations about Sanford’s needs in 2012 led to the creation of a Strategic Plan, which was finalized and adopted in 2013. Board President Bill Lafferty explained, “The Board constantly thinks strategically so that Sanford is and can always be positioned for success. The Strategic Plan is truly a document that we refer to frequently as we continue to work towards the goals that we set for ourselves and the school.” One arm of this Strategic Plan is the Front & Center Campaign that set out to raise 7 million dollars for the renovation and refurbishing of Pirnie, Geipel, and du Pont Library. To date 5.6 million dollars have been raised, and the results on campus are already having a positive impact on students and programs. Lafferty continued by saying, “I think the Front & Center Campaign is a very good example of the Board implementing the Strategic Plan.”

Board President Bill Lafferty explained, “The Board constantly thinks strategically so that Sanford is and can always be positioned for success. The Strategic Plan is truly a document that we refer to frequently as we continue to work towards the goals that we set for ourselves and the school.” Former President of the Board and Front & Center Campaign Co-Chair Tom Allingham was surprised to discover how fluid a capital campaign had to be. “Circumstances change constantly, and we have had to be nimble enough to adapt. Originally the campaign was intended to only cover the Geipel Center for the Performing Arts, but for a variety of reasons, we had to expand to include changes to the du Pont Library and Pirnie Hall.” Front & Center CoChair and longtime board member Kathy Nachbar echoed those sentiments when she noted, “The most striking thing I have learned as the campaign has progressed is that the school is a living entity. That means that the administrators, teachers, and trustees

can make plans, but life gets in the way. For example, the plans for the lower level of du Pont Library had to change when it became obvious that the Lower School Extended Day program needed its own dedicated space.” Nachbar’s children, Michael and Brian, graduated from Sanford in ’05 and ’08, yet she continues to share her time and resources with Sanford because, “my husband Ken and I love the school! Our sons enjoyed a terrific education, made great friends, and had many opportunities for personal growth. I continue to work on behalf of Sanford because we want that same experience for every child.” Both Lafferty and continued on page 10

Positioning Sanford for Success Allingham shared similar reasons for dedicating so much time and energy in service to Sanford, especially with all that is required of a major capital campaign. They join with the many, many Sanford families who work tirelessly in a variety of ways to support the school. In addition to dedicated volunteers and careful planning, a successful campaign relies on fundraising. Sanford has always been a good steward of its money and uses its financial resources wisely. Allingham shared, “We have had to ‘design engineer’ some of the costs out of the Geipel project while retaining all of its functionality, an exercise in discipline that I think is emblematic of Sanford’s spirit of making every dollar count.” There have been some unexpected surprises along the way, including being honored as a recipient of the prestigious and highly competitive E. E. Ford Foundation grant. This $50,000 grant is earmarked for upgrading the sound and lighting systems in Geipel. Development Director Janice Payne stated, “We were honored to be one of the 15

independent schools nationwide selected for a gift by E. E. Ford Foundation. One of the criteria is the degree to which our community supports the school’s fundraising efforts. Campaign participation really does make a difference.” The award requires a 3 to 1 match from the receiving school, and Sanford is currently striving to procure the $150,000 needed to ensure its finalization.

Annual Fund Contributes to the Bottom Line

Sanford’s future is as bright as the smiles on the faces of these lower school students.

The Front & Center Campaign is not the only fundraising effort taking place in the Sanford community. This year’s annual fund reached $455,941. A matching grant from an anonymous donor contributed $50,000 to the final total. One board member waited until the faculty had contributed to the fund and then, in honor of their generosity, matched their total! “Every dollar contributed is appreciated. The consistent 100% participation from the board and the faculty, particularly the faculty, is not a given at every independent school. It is unique to Sanford,” commented Payne.

It is certainly not easy to achieve Annual Fund growth in the midst of a major capital campaign, but by doing so, Sanford had money to upgrade other facilities and programs schoolwide. For example:

$120,000 in the Brick & Seat Campaign: Front & Center supporters purchased bricks for the new Geipel Center walkway and personalized seats for the facility’s new auditorium.

• The Sports Center roof was repaired. • A lit pathway from du Pont Library

to Stephen May Hall was installed.

• New athletic uniforms and

equipment for the student media program were purchased.

Love, Resources, and Creativity In looking at the successes from the Annual Fund and the capital campaign, Mark Anderson summed it up best by saying, “For 85 years we have been a great school for children—a happy, healthy supportive place where students are both loved and challenged. Sanford has always been a resourceful place. We are the school, where years ago, students helped to build the buildings. While we have great support from our community, we don’t have the deepest donor pool. So we have to respond to that challenge by being smarter with the dollars we raise and spend. I believe that this makes us a grateful place. Every dollar given to Sanford is a true gift, and Sanford accepts gifts with the deepest sense of appreciation.”

SANFORD CELEBRATES ITS 85TH BIRTHDAY

“Our campus is our greatest asset, and the care and attention we are giving our facility is emblematic of the strength of our program and teaching. Sanford is finding a way to create what our school and students need. We are forging our own path, and we value the support of our community as we experience this growth and enjoy these improvements,” says Mark Anderson.

Seventh-grade students, who created 3D printed boats to test density, designed and constructed vessels made with cardboard and duct tape and competed in an exciting regatta at the Sanford pool.

Buzz About Sanford The excitement about Sanford is not contained within its gorgeous 100acre campus. When asked what had delighted him the most in his work as Front & Center co-chair, Allingham responded, “There is a positive ripple effect it seems to be having on our school. The new construction fosters a feeling that Sanford is on the move.” Anderson supported that sentiment by adding, “These projects are sending a message to members of the community that Sanford is not content to be the sleepy little gem nestled in the hills of Hockessin off of Lancaster Pike. Our campus is our greatest asset, and the care and attention we are giving our facility

is emblematic of the strength of our program and teaching. Sanford is finding a way to create what our school and students need. We are forging our own path, and we value the support of our community as we experience this growth and enjoy these improvements.”

Let’s continue the celebration Just as it was with the Sawins, Sanford is still blessed to have visionary leaders dedicated to its students while honoring its mission. The school’s motto “No Talent Lies Latent” harkens back to Sanford’s earliest days, and 85 years later it is not merely a slogan or even a respectful homage to its founders, but embodies the backbone of Sanford’s unwavering core values and educational mission.

So, Happy 85th Birthday, Sanford. You truly deserve to be FRONT & CENTER this year, and you are well positioned to continue to be so for many years to come. Let’s hope that you are showered with gifts all year long so that all of the plans of this ambitious and welldeserved facility facelift—and those still to come—can be completed in a timely manner. Any gift to the Front & Center Campaign will become a welcome part of the Sanford legacy, which is strongly rooted in excellence in education. As such, this will keep the students of Sanford FRONT & CENTER as they prepare to become the innovators, professionals and leaders of the future.

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING

Evergreen Society

2014–2015 Operating Income

The Evergreen Society is representative of the Sanford Pine,

Net Tuition $9,129,519 (89.72%)

the school’s ubiquitous symbol. The society recognizes the commitment members of our community make by choosing to secure the school’s future through a planned gift or including Sanford as a charitable recipient in the will.

The symbolism of the evergreen conveys that the gift these members bestow upon the school will, in fact, provide both shelter and color throughout all seasons of a school’s life—through both the beautiful springs of renewal, the spectacular colors of the fall, and the harshest winters. These seasons parallel not only the life of the student body within a school year, but a school within its life cycle. Through these seasons, the evergreen remains a fixed constant, tall, straight and proud. Those who become members of the Evergreen Society are indeed securing that constancy.

Annual Fund $455,941 (4.48%) Other Contributions $101,957 (1%) Auxiliary Programs and Activities $341,995 (3.36%) Draw from Endowment $0 (0.00%) Other Income $146,349 (1.44%) Total Revenue: $10,175,761 (100%)

Listed below are the members of the Evergreen Society, including those whose generous pledges have been fulfilled.

IN MEMORIAM

33

In Memoriam We extend our deepest sympathy to families and friends of these members of the Sanford community. Bill Henneberry ’60 died during a visit to Cambodia in January, 2015. In his senior year at Sanford, Bill served as Junior Gavel Boy. After majoring in chemistry in college, he earned a master’s degree in business administration from Arizona State University. Bill’s professional experience included serving as a statistics professor at Humboldt State University, working as an international sales representative for the Scientific Instruments Division of Brockman Instruments, and being employed as a computer research analyst for Continental Oil Co. When serving in the U.S Army between 1969 and 1971, he was a biophysics assistant. Bill was a proud maritime union member and in 1999 he was elected to a two-year term as a business agent for the Sailors’ Union of the Pacific (AFL-CIO). In 2000, Bill earned his law degree from Oakland City University College of Law and was admitted to the California bar in 2004. He set up a small law practice headquartered in Fair Oaks, California. Sanford classmates remember Bill as an intellectually curious person who was a good friend who cared about people. Bill’s mother, Helen Henneberry, worked at Sanford as assistant to the academic dean. She was dearly beloved for taking an interest in the students. She died in 2006 in Tempe, Arizona, just several months before her 100th birthday. After leaving Sanford, both Bill and Helen stayed in contact with friends they had made at Sanford. Bill’s younger sister, Susan, also a former Sanford student, preceded Bill and Helen in death. He is survived by two sons, Scanlon, 44, and Julian, 28. G.V. “Mike” Brenneman, Jr. ’49 died peacefully at his Bethesda, Maryland home, surrounded by family, on Sunday, March 15, 2015. He was 83. A native Washingtonian, Mike played an active role in shaping the city through a long career in real estate and was an early advocate of condominium and cooperative ownership. Among his notable achievements were the sales, leasing, and management of the Watergate complex in Foggy Bottom, D.C. during its development stages from 1963–1969. Named “Marketing Man of the Year” in 1973 by the American Marketing Association, he went on to become president of the Washington, D.C. Association of Realtors and was the 1986 Realtor of the Year. Mike’s other accomplishments include being named a director of the National Association of Realtors and serving as a member of the District of Columbia Building Industry Association and the Metropolitan Washington Board of Trade. He was a founding member of the Washington Metropolitan Chapter of Community Associations Institute. A frequent speaker on real estate issues before national, regional, and local groups, he presented testimony on housing-related issues before various state legislatures and several U.S. Senate and Congressional Committees. He was active in Kiwanis and in Chevy Chase United Methodist Church. The son of George Vincent Brenneman, Sr. and Edith Robinson Brenneman, he graduated from Sanford Preparatory School, lettering in baseball, basketball, football and track. He attended American University on a basketball scholarship and later George Washington University. David Worrell ’59 (left) passed away on July 22, 2015 after a brief illness. David was residing in Atlanta, Georgia at the time of death. Condolences may be sent to his wife Victoria at 3101 Northbrook Drive, Atlanta, GA 30341-4609. Anne (Nancy) Brown “Brownie” Noble ’52, of Darien, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home on Friday, May 8, 2015 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born Anne Carter Brown in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on July 29, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Radford and Katharine Brown and the sister of the late Damon Brown. Nancy had a fascinating childhood as the stepdaughter of Vicente’ Valdez Rodrigues, the Cuban ambassador to South America. She lived abroad in Havana, Cuba, Bogota, Columbia, and Lima, Peru, and came to know the customs and cultures of these societies well. She spent most of her academic career at Sanford Preparatory School where she graduated in 1952. While at Sanford, Nancy was an avid equestrian and loved playing field hockey and lacrosse. She had the privilege of learning to play field hockey from the legendary Constance M.K. Applebee who brought the sport to the United States. Nancy attended George Washington University. While in her forties, Nancy’s husband Ray taught Nancy to fly a single engine airplane. Nancy worked locally for many years, but her most gratifying job was with the non-profit IESC where she helped prepare retired executives to go abroad to assist in business and economic development in third world countries. Nancy loved spending time with her family and her extensive network of friends. Those who know Nancy knew how generous she was with her time and resources for all of her friends, family, and those in need. She was a true animal lover and cared for her pets including horses, dogs, and cats. Nancy was very involved in many local and social organizations. She was active member in her church for over 60 years.
