Good schools wrap themselves around stories and the people who made those stories come alive. Sanford has been fortunate to have many good storytellers over the years, and I believe one of my responsibilities, as Head of School, is to pass along these stories and memories to our current students in order to keep the spirit alive for the future.
Each fall, we celebrate Founder’s Day and Homecoming and take advantage of those annual events to imbue our school community with the remarkable uniqueness of this place. In preparation for my remarks at the Founder’s Day ceremony, I invariably dig into some of the original documents in the school archives. I am moved each time I read the words of the founder, Ellen Quigley Sawin, when she wrote about what a school should be:
“In every heart there lies a dream of home...in yours, in mine. It reaches out to sunny hills, to open skies, to blossoms in the spring; to burning leaves in the autumn and to great stretches of winter’s playtime snow. It glows with harmony; where the children have the love you want them to have...where they have the careful touch of those who will make them happy and useful. Our dream encompasses an infinite tenderness, a deep indwelling happiness; a home where love is the spirit that welds all into a joyous, working unit.”
Mother Sawin believed that her school should not only feel like a family, but that it should be a family. Her philosophy was conveyed in many and varied ways, from talks in assembly to gathering the students in her home before bedtime to share a poem or a story.
While boarding life afforded certain opportunities that may not exist today, Mother Sawin would be pleased that her philosophy has lived on in our students of today. Over the summer, I re-read the last several graduation speeches, delivered by students. Like Mother Sawin, these students referred to the school in which they had been nurtured and challenged to be their best. The great Indian philosopher, Kahlil Gibran once wrote, “work is love made visible”. No one understood that better than Ellen Quigley Sawin, but the Sanford students of the 21st century seem to enjoy the responsibility of carrying on her work.
One of the 2006 Alumni Award recipients, Bob Crawford ‘54, tells some of the best stories about Sanford in the early days. Several years ago, in fact, Bob decided to write memoirs about his Sanford experience, entitled Memories of Sanford and, in his “memory” book, Bob regales his readers with story after story about his upbringing on the Sanford campus from the age of 2 (!) until he graduated and left for West Point. As he tells it, Sanford “heroes” were resurrected at meetings of the school in the auditorium, at birthday parties, and at athletic banquets. The embodiment of Sanford spirit inevitably grew from these talks.
Well into the first decade of the 21st century, Sanford is fortunate that a strong and direct connection with the Sawin family has been sustained. In addition, hundreds of graduates of our school keep the Sawin Family spirit alive and well. Before poor health slowed her down, Nancy Sawin, oldest daughter of the founders and the second Head of School, spent hours with me at her home and on campus, answering my questions, showing me her books and her Sanford artifacts along with her collection of agricultural tools and equipment which is truly remarkable. One of Nancy’s more endearing qualities is the ability to look ahead, and, when plans were developing for changes to the campus in 2001, I shared the details with her, hoping, of course, that she would approve of the direction her family’s school was taking. Rather than dwelling on the past, she insisted that the changes were necessary and that it pleased her that so many people cared so deeply about carrying on the Sanford spirit.
At Founder’s Day and other special occasions throughout the year, I talk with our students about creating school memories that are based on the past and the present. They, and we, are part of a continuum that sustains our community and the reality of Sanford School as an important work in process.

Broadcasts Once Again Sanford Radio
Radio Club alumni advisers
Mitch Hill ’73 (standing) and Tristan Hoffmann ’01 hope the radio station will help strengthen the connection between alumni and the school.
By Theresa Gawlas Medoff
hen Sanford students begin broadcasting regularly over the Internet this fall, they will be reviving the school radio station that flourished in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. They are launching Sanford Radio with the help of some alumni, including one whose name was synonymous with radio during his upper school years—Mitch Hill ’73.
“Radio 2.0 at Sanford,” as Hill calls the venture, got its start last school year. Interest in the rejuvenated Radio Club was high, with nearly 60 students indicating interest at the Activities Fair in fall 2005. Of course, without a studio and the requisite equipment, the students were limited in what they could do.
To help get the radio station up and running, students in Sanford’s all-female chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) built a multimedia server for the radio station. Director of Technology Suzy Hoffmann, faculty adviser to both the ACM chapter and the Radio Club, estimates that the girls’ contribution saved tens of thousands of dollars. Other equipment was bought or donated. The Radio Club debuted in midwinter 2006 by broadcasting three basketball games over the Internet, including a sold-out boys’ varsity playoff game. (These games can be accessed as podcasts on the station’s website, www.SanfordRadio.org.)
Still, there was much work to do before Sanford Radio could begin regular programming. Over the summer, a new broadcast studio was built in Stephen May Hall, and the school has applied for the various music licenses needed to broadcast without violating copyrights. Students spent the early part of the fall trimester hooking up the equipment and building a continued to page 2
digital music library. “It’s a lot of work at the beginning. Not only do the songs need to be put on the server, but everything needs to be timed and labeled,” says part-time Sanford Webmaster Tristan Hoffmann ’01, who was active in his college radio station at Carnegie Mellon University. Like Hill, he volunteers as an alumni adviser to the Radio Club.
Students hope that by late fall they will broadcasting over the Internet 24/7 through a combination of live and preprogrammed shows. Although the programming schedule was not yet decided at press time, students have a variety of ideas. Senior Obi Nwabara is interested in broadcasting sports, while classmate Elly Smokler would like to host a talk show. Nolan Silverstein, another senior, wants to share his eclectic musical tastes with listeners. “I’d mix some hardcore punk and soft jazz and see what happens,” he says. “We don’t need another classic rock or Top 40 station; we need a station that plays different kinds of music.” In addition to live streaming audio, students plan to do podcasts [audio files stored on the Internet that can be played back on a personal computer or mp3 player] of talk shows, sporting events, and possibly lectures and student performances.
Senior Nate Knisely sees himself more as a behind-the-scenes guy, though he would like to do movie reviews. “The radio station offers a ton of different opportunities,” he says. “Students can learn more about technology, public speaking, music, and sports. I’d also like to see us cover what the students are doing outside of school, like public service projects.”
Tristan Hoffmann sees the radio station not only as an excellent teaching medium but also as a way to build school spirit and to connect alumni with the school.
A generation ago, Nate’s father, Tony Knisely ’74, deejayed a weekend music show on Sanford’s radio station. (See Sanford Radio—the Early Days on page 3.) He credits the experience
with broadening his musical taste and says he is happy to see his sons involved in Sanford Radio. (Ben Knisely ’06 was an announcer for one of the first sportscasts.) “It’s really exciting,” he says. “I had a lot of fun with the radio station when I was at Sanford, and I will be interested to hear what today’s students will do with it.”
For now, listeners will be able to hear Sanford Radio only over the Internet. The school doesn’t have a radio frequency— and no new broadcast licenses are available—so listeners cannot pick it up on their FM or AM dials. But Hill isn’t giving up on the idea of getting a radio frequency assigned to Sanford. He has been keeping a close watch on an effort by the Federal Communications Commission to create a new class of low-power FM radio frequencies. “We want to make sure that we are in line for that when the opportunity presents itself,” he explains.
But internet broadcasting does have one big advantage over the airwaves: people all over the world will be able to listen to Sanford Radio. Internet broadcasting is also fairly inexpensive since it uses IT equipment already in place.
Most students involved with Sanford Radio will not go into broadcasting as a career, but in today’s media-driven society, it’s important for everyone to understand both the technology and the business of communications, emphasizes Hill, a former deejay who now owns Hill Creative Services, a company that produces radio and television advertising.
Hill calls his involvement with the school radio station a highlight of his time at Sanford, and that is why he has invested so much of himself in getting the program up and running once again. “I think today’s students deserve the same opportunities that I had,” he says, “and to see the kind of interest and enthusiasm these students have shown—well, anyone who volunteers will tell you, it does your heart well.”

OSanford Radiothe early days
n warm spring days in the early 1970s, Sanford students would often gather outside the school store, listening to the sounds of WSPX blaring from speakers that boys in Sawin Lodge had aimed out their windows.
Back then, everyone on campus tuned to Sanford’s radio station to hear their favorite music, catch up on campus news, and enjoy programs like The Half a Half an Hour Comedy Show, hosted by Jim Stoddard ’73. (Jim is now a deejay at WJBR-FM, Wilmington.)
Sanford Radio got its start in 1967 or 1968 as a campus radio station broadcasting from the top of Quigley Hall. Typical of teenage pranksters, these early Radio Club members dubbed the station WINO. Among the station’s pioneers were Edward Dunlop ’69 and his brother, Alfred Dunlop ’71.
By 1969, when Mitch Hill ’73 became involved, the name had changed to WSPX, and the radio station had moved to a studio in the Nancy Sawin Math/Science Building. The station broadcast on and off throughout the day as well as after school, evenings until 10 or 11 p.m., and weekends. WSPX could broadcast remotely from anywhere on campus, and it wasn’t unusual to see Radio Club members hauling speakers, records, and other equipment to a campus special event or to a dorm for broadcast “on location.” The station’s signal was extremely low, however, and even on campus, it wasn’t always easy to tune it in, so during non-school hours, the Radio Club was allowed to broadcast over the PA system, too.
But the students had higher aspirations. With the help of faculty advisers Terence Mills (history) and Robert Barker (Dean of Boys) and Assistant Headmaster Commander William Aydelott (the title comes from his 20 years in the Navy), Hill spent the better part of his junior year filling out the mountain of paperwork required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to apply for a lowbroadcast FM license. Sanford was granted a permit for an educational class D license for a 30-watt signal that could be heard as far as Newark, DE and Avondale, PA. (In comparison, Delaware’s WSTW-FM has a 50,000-watt signal.)
Broadcasting area-wide required a whole different level of equipment, and students spent the year 1973-1974 raising money and continuing to broadcast exclusively on campus. The following summer, Hill, who was by then a deejay at Philadelphia’s top-rated WFIL-AM, returned to campus to help students complete the setup and begin broadcasting
under its official FCC designation as WZZE 88.7 FM. A 100-foot tower and a “transmitter shack,” as the students called the tiny building, were placed on the highest hill on campus, in what is now the Sanford Ridge neighborhood. “There were many times that we had to shoo the cows and horses away to get into the shack,” Hill recalls.
There weren’t many teenager-friendly music stations broadcasting in Delaware back then, and WZZE quickly became a favorite of many in the Wilmington and Newark areas. The station played rock and roll, rhythm and blues and jazz. The radio station was incorporated into the school’s new communications class, and at the height of its popularity more than 40 students were involved. WZZE staff comprised girls and boys and a diverse racial and ethnic mix long before most commercial stations did.
WZZE probably reached it greatest prominence with the local community in 1976, when the beleaguered Philadelphia ’76ers asked the station to pick up broadcast rights that had been dropped by WILM. “That was the year the ’76ers started coming back,” Hill recalls. “All of a sudden, everyone wanted to carry the Sixers, but we had the contract.” Sanford made a deal with Rollins Cable (now Comcast) to broadcast WZZE’s signal on television, and those with a cable connection could hear WZZE anywhere in Delaware.
WZZE-FM became a casualty of the elimination of the boarding program at Sanford, and by the early 1980s the station was no longer on the air. “I don’t think the administration thought they could sustain the radio station without boarding students,” Hill explains.
Although the station was no longer broadcasting, Sanford Radio lived on in the memories of many students of that era, and it would be those fond memories that inspired the regeneration of Sanford Radio as an Internet broadcaster in 2006.

Commencement 2006
“As we have learned during our time at Sanford, the pathway of development is often a dark one, requiring us to seek assistance and guidance from those in our lives; during our high school careers, we have made good decisions and bad ones, we have experienced success and failure, and we have questioned (and, ultimately) accepted our choices and beliefs. Through it all, the school has always steered us back to the paths we were meant to travel just as a lighthouse guides disoriented ships to shore. Sanford maintains a light of its own, a light that shines forth from some hidden source, warming and illuminating all aspects of the community. From the dappled light that dances through the quad, to the brilliant rays of sunshine that pour into Stephen May classrooms each morning, to the shimmering beams reflected in the Chapel Valley stream, the radiance and luminosity of this place are manifested everywhere we look. And yet, as integral as these settings are to the Sanford experience, the most profound and significant source of illumination is found not in the glitter and glow of the campus, but in the people and principles of the Sanford community.”

Faculty Focus
Upper School faculty members travel to Italy for professional development experience
Thanks to the generosity of an E.E. Ford Foundation grant that was awarded to Sanford School to be used for professional growth and development purposes by the experienced faculty members of the Upper School, a group of sixteen faculty members traveled to Tuscany for two weeks this summer.
The design of the “mini-sabbatical”, constructed by Lloyd Johns, Chairman of the History Department, and Sue Dagenais, Director of Counseling, encompassed several main goals:
1). to enrich and revitalize teaching talent;
2). to provide an opportunity for a strong cohort to be formed among the most experienced members of the Sanford Upper School faculty so that they could continue to serve Sanford’s mission well;
3). to encourage a deeper and richer understanding of and respect for colleagues; and
4). to act as a springboard to further utilize the E.E. Ford Foundation grant money.
The faculty members who decided to take advantage of this incredible educational opportunity worked diligently for more than a year planning the adventure. Traveling to the heart of the Renaissance, Tuscany seemed to offer all of the advantages of continued learning in many academic fields as well as of having some respite and relaxation in, arguably, one of the most beautiful places in Europe. According to Sue Dagenais: “Living and working together turned out to be a fantastic, almost surreal journey for everyone who embarked on this trip together. We learned to view colleagues in new lights and also had the opportunity to reflect on our own paths as educators. As an institution, we encourage our students to become lifelong, global learners, attuned to the increasing complexities of daily life. What better way to model for our students how seriously we hold this important truth?”
Here are some of the things that Sanford’s experienced Upper School faculty members learned before, during, and after their journey.
I learned that the changes occurring in art—more secular themes, more sense of perspective and more fluidity— during the Renaissance parallel the changes occurring in science and technology.
• ANDRE DAGENAIS
There are so many opportunities to apply life in Tuscany to my chemistry course and the earth science seminars. Just a few of the topics are:
• Astronomy: stars are so visible in the countryside
• Atmospheric conditions in Tuscany: the mist due to dust and condensation (szfumata)
• Leonardo daVinci’s machine designs
• DONNA FARRAR
There was so little of the usual shop talk about Sanford and Sanford students and yet so much positive, engaged conversation that will benefit Sanford and its students. The stories we tell on a daily basis in our classes cannot help but be enriched, and the excitement we felt cannot help but be transferred to our students.
• LLOYD JOHNS
I learned that many of us felt that we learned more about how to teach from our past teachers than from our college courses in education…
I learned that I still loved to write—thanks to Sue’s assignments!
• CAROL MOORE
I learned that it is better to learn about art and architecture in the streets, museums, and churches of Italy rather than from books or in lecture halls.
• BETTY O’REGAN
Sue Dagenais (far right) leads a discussion with colleagues (from left to right): Andre Dagenais, Catherine Kleier, Chip Mayo, John Ramsey, Betty O’Regan, Janet Upton, Paul Donovan, Donna Farrar, and Janis Kardash.
The Inextinguishable Smile of Kathy Sexton
Kathy Sexton came to work at Sanford in the fall of 1975. She retired in June 2006. In her thirty-one years of extraordinary service to the school, she was always known for her inextinguishable smile. One might ask, “How can one person stay so happy for so long?”
To get behind that legendary smile and learn more about Kathy, and her many happy years of devoted service to Sanford, this writer had to pirate Kathy away from the Lower School Office in Yearsley Hall one day last spring and interview her one-on-one in a small conference room in Albright Hall. Otherwise, students, teachers, and parents would have interrupted us constantly because they needed some of Kathy’s consummate skills.
In that delightful hour, your reporter heard all about a young, stay-at-home mother in the 1970’s who decided to go to work. As noted above, Kathy began her Sanford career in 1975 not planning to be at the school for very long. She remained for three decades because of the children. Kathy said, “Every day, they light up my life.”
y Sexton
Kat
After only a few months on the job, Kathy knew that she wanted her own children to attend Sanford. And they did! All three Sexton children enrolled in the Middle School in 1976 and went on to graduate as follows: Steven Sexton, Class of 1982; Cindy Sexton Healy, Class of 1983; and Debra Sexton Allen, Class of 1985. Being a Sanford parent was both an enlightening and rewarding experience for Kathy from 1976 to 1985.
Upon her arrival, Kathy was the “temporary” receptionist for the entire school. Soon, she joined the Upper School team as receptionist and secretary. She remained in the old Stephen May Hall for the next fourteen years. Kathy then moved to the Lower School seventeen years ago (1989) when the new office opened there. Since that time, Kathy has served as administrative assistant to three heads of Lower School: John Adelsheim, Sandy Hammonds, and Nancy Hebard.
In our conversation, Kathy recalled that there was only one computer in the Upper School during her tenure there. All grades, recommendations, and transcripts were typed by hand. Kathys certainly used her many business school and shorthand skills in those pre–computer days.
Kathy also talked about her own background. She is a native of Philadelphia, PA. Kathy’s experience prior to Sanford included working at Bethlehem Steel and attending business school. She now lives with her husband of many years, Aaron, in Wilmington, DE. Aaron retired as a supervisor at General Motors.
Kathy and Aaron have four grandsons and three grand daughters. Kathy’s favorite activities—in addition to being a superb grandmother—include: traveling (cruises especially), gardening, reading, and being with friends. Kathy decided to cease working this year while she has good health and plenty of energy to enjoy her seven grandchildren—and her many activities—to the utmost. As of this writing, she is not making any new commitments or taking on any new challenges in 2006-07. Kathy is going to take things one day at a time for the next year.
In the final part of our interview, Kathy’s indistinguishable smile grew noticeably broader when this writer asked her what things she liked the most about working at Sanford for so many years. Her answers came thick and fast:
• Being with the Lower School children every day—with their bright, happy faces
• Serving with her colleagues and friends on the Lower School faculty
• Seeing students learning in all the grades every day
• Talking with parents—mostly mothers—and helping them solve problems
• Being the cushion during those few times when things went wrong
• Reaching out to everyone to help make the Lower School an inclusive place
• Touching the lives of so many students, teachers, and parents.
Kathy acknowledged that she also delivered a lot of messages, answered thousands of phone calls, and handled a great deal of deskwork during her thirty-one years, but, to her, those tasks were definitely secondary to the items in the list above. In addition, Kathy made it very clear that one of her chief reasons for remaining at Sanford was her division head, Nancy Hebard. Kathy reflected on her relationship with Nancy as follows: “No one could handle all the things that Nancy does with so much understanding and patience. I truly respect her, and I value the time that I have been her partner—as she would so often call me.”
It is typical of Kathy Sexton that her most glowing comment in the entire interview was for a colleague and not about herself. As the conversation drew to a close, Kathy’s inextinguishable smile sparkled when she said, “I never counted my days at Sanford because each and every day was so wonderful.”
Kathy Sexton leaves behind her three decades of remarkable service to Sanford as she moves ahead with her life. Kathy, please come back and visit the school—soon and often!

DEAR SANFORD COMMUNITY:
I would like to express my gratitude to all of our generous contributors and to all the volunteers who helped make the 2005-2006 Annual Fund the most successful annual campaign in Sanford’s history, raising more than $500,000 in unrestricted support.
Every group within our community responded to our call for participation, increasing our rates in each category. Participation by current parents increased from an overall average of 74% in the 2004-2005 Annual Fund to 79% this year. A contributing factor in the growth of the Annual Fund was 32 new Leadership Donors whose gifts of $1,000 or more were critical to the great success of our fundraising programs.
Other highlights include over 120 new gifts from Alumni, resulting in a 65% increase over the prior year. We are very grateful for their support and desire to maintain a relationship with Sanford over so many years, including Robert Russell ’39 who has re-connected after 67 years!
Additionally, our Board of Trustees, faculty and staff continue to humble us with their steadfast support and 100% participation for the sixth straight year. This tradition of giving is unprecedented at our peer schools and a measure of their faith in this extraordinary institution. The Annual Fund is a key source of revenue for Sanford. Annual giving provides operational funds which enhance programs and opportunities for Sanford students. Gifts assist us in our ability to attract and retain faculty, strengthen financial aid, and promote strong athletic, art, music and theater programs. Such gifts also support technology and other resources that students use every day.
A Sanford education remains an excellent value as tuition is competitive with our peer schools despite our modest endowment. Therefore, the Annual Fund at Sanford continues to carry a significant percentage of the true cost of educating Sanford students.
Thank you and congratulations to the hundreds of individuals and families whose loyal generosity and support have helped make 2005-2006 a record breaking year.
Best

ALUMNUS GIVES BACK TO SANFORD WITH GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY INTERNSHIP
Editor’s Note: Last spring, Dr. G. Ian Gallicano ’84 returned to Sanford to make a presentation to a group of Upper School students. Following that presentation, Ian offered an internship to any student who would like an opportunity to work with him at Georgetown University. Andrew Younger, at that time a member of the junior class, took advantage of that opportunity. Here are some of Ian and Andrew’s thoughts about their summer internship experience:
IAN: Andrew basically floored me with his knowledge, eagerness, and maturity/respect towards science after a mere week in my lab. He actually impressed my two graduate students! That is not an easy task. In fact, after Andrew had been here only a couple of days, they both asked me if they could have him work with them on their projects. In the end, my goal for Andrew was two fold: 1) immerse him in—and have him learn—techniques and technologies we use every day, and 2) acquire data that could be used in my grants or be published. In a short month, we accomplished both goals.
ANDREW: After Dr. Gallicano gave a talk to my AP biology class about his research in stem cells and cancer growth, he offered an internship to any of us who would like the opportunity to come work with him in the lab at Georgetown University where he teaches and conducts research. I acted eagerly on his offer, and, this past August, I worked with Dr. Gallicano and his two graduate students, Angel Miera and Kara Foshay. My project, in conjunction with Dr. Gallicano’s grants, was to investigate the role of a protein called Desmoplakin in prostate cancer cells. We understood some of what was happening in vitro, when prostate cells grow in the lab. My project focused on investigating what was happening in vivo, when cancer cells grow in various grades of human prostate tumors. My work included learning how to do indirect immunofluorescence staining, conducting confocal microscopy, and creating ultra thin sections of tumor tissue for the staining. In addition, I learned how to do a Bradford assay, Western Blotting, and numerous other techniques that are helpful in laboratory work. Dr. Gallicano, Angel, and Kara were all very helpful and none of my work would have been possible without them. It was a great experience to work with all three of them in the lab. I learned a tremendous amount during my four–week stay at Georgetown. The experience was invaluable to me because I learned a vast amount not only about my project but also the inner-workings of primary scientific research. My project at Georgetown taught me a lot; I will always remember the science and the people who were involved.

“I believe one should strive to be honorable not out of fear of being punished. If honor involves integrity, esteem, and worth, then I believe that true honor encompasses honesty, self-esteem, and self-worth. The individual person knows if he or she is being honorable. In Hamlet, Shakespeare has written: ‘To thine ownself be true…’ We should, therefore, have integrity and desire honor for our own dignity and worth. I consider that honor is among the highest virtues, and being honorable for its own sake—not because you may be caught—is a value to be desired.”
. DR. PAUL DONOVAN
Dr. Paul Donovan speaks to the audience about “Timé” (honor) at the Cum Laude Induction ceremony. In May, twelve students were inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa-modeled society, which recognizes the academic success of students in secondary schools. The inductees from the Class of 2006 were Shannon Crowley, Jennifer Jones, Nicole Pasquale, Melissa Shah, Jeffrey Townsend, and Amanda Vent. The Class of 2007 honorees were Cassandra Deitrick, Alexander Krenz, Chirsophter Miller, Michele Rodeck, Varoon Sachdev, and Elly Smokler.

Spring Home & School Association Event Gift Gallery “NIGHT AT THE RACES”
ome & School sponsored a fun-filled evening of games, dining and horse racing at the Sports Center on Saturday, April 22nd. Proceeds from this annual event go directly to our school and provide teachers and students with valuable resources. In addition to our silent and live auction items, the Gift Gallery was a popular feature as auction guests contributed directly to items requested by divisions and departments. Guests could contribute all or part of the value of each item, and donors are listed here according to their area of support.

Annual Report 2005-2006 Home & School
O
ur Home & School Association had another busy, yet fulfilling year. Last fall, we combined forces with the Sanford 75th Anniversary Committee and held our annual Fall Parent Social in conjunction with the 75th Anniversary Gala. It was a fantastic evening of socializing, viewing the 75th Anniversary Retrospective video, honoring the winners of the 2005 Alumni Awards, and dancing to the live music of the band 9 Steps Down. The food was provided by Gallagher & Gallagher. Many thanks to my co-chairs, Jennifer Madden and Synthia Wong, and to everyone who helped with this event.
Caroling on the Quad actually took place outside in December despite extremely cold temperatures that morning. It was wonderful to see children of all ages—and some parents—singing wonderful holiday songs. Hot drinks and muffins were available afterward in the dining hall. Sandy King did a fabulous job organizing this event.
In February, we held our annual Faculty Appreciation Luncheon. Kathy Zabel and Nancy Reinhardt did a great job co-chairing the event this year. Numerous other parent volunteers helped to make this event a success. The lavish buffet was catered by the restaurant Seasons Pizza. With the assistance of the division librarians, a meaningful book was purchased for every staff and faculty member. After enjoying their books for several weeks, staff and faculty give them to the appropriate library.
In the spring our annual fund raiser was held in the Sports Center. The theme this year was A Night at the Races. Sherry Bielicki and Linda Mulvihill did a fantastic job co-chairing this event. In addition to the typical games of chance provided for this event by Tumbling Dice, we added horse racing where horses could be purchased ahead of time. Races were sponsored by patrons, betting was open to everyone and then pre-recorded races never seen in this area were shown with our horses in the races! In addition to these activities, we held silent and live auctions, with a lot of excitement generated by the auctioning of three Sanford street signs. We raised over $60,000 for our children! I also want to thank the many volunteers, both parents and staff, who helped make this night a success.
The After Prom was held at Kahunaville again this year. Shirley Iacono and Elise Bobbitt did a wonderful job chairing this event. Many other parents also contributed their time and energy to make this event a success. The children had plenty of fun, and safe activities, to cap off their big evening.
Efforts of the grade representatives enabled individual grades to hold enjoyable activities throughout the year, with many grades making extra money by running the sports concession stand. I would like to thank Ann Messano for all her help with concessions this year.
None of these accomplishments would be possible without all the hard work of all our volunteers. These events are what bring us all together for the good of our school. They unify us, making Sanford a warm and welcoming community. It makes Sanford a great place for our children, which is the goal for which we are all striving.
Throughout the year, we also joined forces with the Home & School Associations from Tatnall, Tower Hill, and Wilmington Friends to make parent awareness topic speakers available to parents from all four schools. I again thank Sandy King for her leadership in the Community of Concern campaign, which strives to ensure our parents are educated in keeping our kids drug, alcohol, and tobacco-free. I want to thank personally the 2005-2006 Home & School officers—Kristen Kuhn, Pam Allingham, Ruth Jackson, and Janie Cramer—for their help and support. I enjoyed working with all of you. This year, Kristen Kuhn and the 2006-2007 officers will continue the Home & School commitment to enhance our children’s experience at Sanford.
I encourage you to get involved in Home & School any way you can. It is for a great cause—our children.
Cheryl Alfieri, Home & School President, 2005-2006
Sanford’s 2006-‘07 Home & School officers are (from left to right): Pam Allingham (Secretary), Janie Cramer (Treasurer), Kristen Kuhn (President), and Rosemary Brooks (President-Elect).
spotlight on ATHLETICS
It is no doubt the beginning of another school year. The quiet summer days in the Sports Center are long gone and the buzz of students and the sounds of sports are everywhere. Since August 18th, the start of pre-season practice for Upper School sports, approximately 145 athletes and 12 coaches have been taking part in daily practices. The practice and conditioning sessions attended by our student-athletes and coaches are just a small part of the preparation for a successful and productive season. Unfortunately, wins and losses often define the “success” of a team, but there are many other ways to measure our successes. One of those measures is our conduct on the fields, sidelines, and in the stands.
As always, a focus on good sportsmanship is at the forefront of our program. We expect our student-athletes, coaches, parents, and general fans to behave properly when representing our school at contests. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Good sportsmanship is a hot topic of discussion and concern in our conference and throughout our state and the nation. Because of this, the heads and athletic directors at all schools in the Delaware Independent School Conference have decided to embark on a year of sportsmanship education for all of our constituents. As a conference, we have contracted with the Positive Coaching Alliance to conduct numerous educational seminars, clinics, and meetings, throughout the 2006-2007 school year, for student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and parents. As quoted from the PCA mission statement, “Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is a nonprofit organization based at Stanford University with the mission to transform youth sports so sports can transform youth. PCA was created to transform the culture of youth sports to give all young athletes the opportunity for a positive, character-building experience.” To learn more about the PCA, visit their website at www.positivecoach.org. When possible, I encourage all parents to attend PCA meetings and sessions. We can all make a difference in promoting good sportsmanship at every level of sporting events.
A fun and exciting year is ahead of us in Sanford athletics. Please come out to cheer on our teams. Find the time to watch the sports that you love and a sport that is unfamiliar to you. Step up to ask questions about the rules of a sport so that you can become an informed spectator. You will be amazed at how enjoyable it is to watch a sport when you understand the game, strategies, and official’s calls. I will look forward to seeing you throughout the year at the various PCA meetings and at our own athletic events.

Jeremiah Charles ’92, writes, “What have I been up to? Well, on the whatdo-I-do end of things, my wife and I own our own business working with a large volume, multi-national company in the Health and Wellness industry called Tahitian Noni International (website www.tni.com/synergizer). As independent consultants, part of what we do is help tell the story about how the beneficial properties of this plant from Tahiti was brought to the world to help people’s health. We also help people own and operate their own franchise businesses under the umbrella of this company as well. Our company has been featured on the Discovery Channel, ESPN, CNBC, and MSNBC as well as in over 1,000 print articles including the recent edition of Success From Home magazine. It’s a very exciting company to deal with and we are having a blast! We recently relocated to the Sunshine City of St. Petersburg, FL. It is aptly named for its average of 361 days of sunshine a year! It is very beautiful here and, after a year of trying it on for size, we purchased a home here this spring.
My wife, Billy, and I were married Sept. 3, 1999. We currently host a menagerie of 4 cats and 3 dogs, mostly rescues acquired from my wife’s long tenure as a veterinary nurse. We had the privilege of rescuing a beautiful female Husky puppy from floodravaged New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. We were able to nurse her to health with the aid of proper nutrition including our company’s own Canine Essentials Noni supplement. We appropriately named her Moselle, which is the female version of the name Moses, which means Saved from the water when translated from ancient Hebrew.
Anyway, that being said, I’m doing well, having fun in the sun, doing what I love and loving what I do.”

Economics grad students invited to Nobel conference
Two Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics doctoral students were selected to attend the second Lindau Meeting in Economic Sciences in Lindau, Germany, Aug. 16-19. Daniel Brown ’00 (shown in photo above) and Katherine McCann, both in the department of economics, received two of only 50 National Science Foundation travel grants awarded nationwide. Students were nominated by the chairpersons of their departments.
Brown, a third-year doctoral student, said he was shocked when he heard the news. “I’m pretty surprised to say the least. John Nash is going to be there, and Clive Granger, Robert Engle, Reinhard Selten, the German game theorist. I’m interested in game theory in arbitration processes. It’s an honor to be able to meet the Nobel laureates. These people are like the Google of economics,” he said. Saul Hoffman, professor and chairperson of the economics department, has taught both Brown and McCann. “We are so proud for Dan and Katy. They are both excellent students,” he said. “Katy has gone on to become an outstanding teacher of her own sections, and Dan has been an invaluable teaching assistant in Prof. Charles Link’s large multi-media introductory economics class. The award is a wonderful opportunity for them.”
The Lindau Meeting in Economic Sciences is a unique scientific forum and learning experience that brings students and Nobel laureates together to discuss new discoveries, day-to-day research, and more universal aspects of the laureates’ work.
Nobel laureates in chemistry, physics and physiology/medicine have convened annually in Lindau for open and informal meetings with students and young researchers since 1951. But, the first Lindau Meeting in Economic Sciences came in 2004, when hundreds of students attended the three-day conference.
The event consists of formal lectures in the morning with the remainder of the day set aside for students to meet in smaller, informal sessions with the laureates.
