We are grateful to everyone who has supported Sanford’s effort to pursue perfection and catch excellence. Throughout this issue of our annual report you will read about the Sanford experiences of members of our community in their own words. Sanford continues to produce stories of exceptional success and growth. Thank you for helping us to make these journeys possible. Several years ago, I challenged our faculty and staff to raise the bar at Sanford. My feeling was that Sanford was a very good school and had been for a long time—but that we could be better, sharper, stronger. I wanted Sanford to be better than good; we should strive for perfection and in the process, we would catch excellence. This spirit was captured in Sanford’s last strategic plan, Ambition in Action. The result was a focus on developing leaders, improving our facilities, enhancing our campus, and building student programs. Since then, we have built the Geipel Center for Performing Arts, added courses to our academic offerings, increased faculty and staff diversity, and accomplished much more. In short, Sanford has experienced tremendous success because of our action. We continue to strive for perfection, and our pursuit of excellence is an ongoing mindset. We are working to be the finest school for all of our Sanford students—past, present, and future. As we look to a new strategic plan to be published in early 2018, I am proud of what we have accomplished and excited about what the future will hold for Sanford in the coming years. Whatever the future holds, I’m certain that our community will embrace the challenges and opportunities with a unified spirit that continues to make Sanford an exceptional place to work, learn, and grow. Thank you for being part of the effort. Best,

We are

Mark J. Anderson, Head of School

working to be the finest school for all of our Sanford students–past, present, and future.

Chasing Perfection and CATCHING

EXCELLENCE By Christine M. Yasik

Baseball players chase fly balls with the hopes of catching them. Children use butterfly nets to chase beautiful monarchs to add to their collection. Even dreams are chased and sometimes caught. But, a school? What does a school chase and what can it catch? Mark Anderson posed that very question during the opening of the 2012 school year, his second year as Sanford’s head of school. During his remarks, Anderson shared the following quote from Vince Lombardi, Jr.: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” At the conclusion of the meeting, Anderson presented members of the administration, faculty, and staff with white tee shirts emblazoned with blue lettering that said, “A Commitment to Excellence,” which was to be the theme for the upcoming school year. Fast forward to 2017, and Sanford is still chasing perfection and catching excellence. When asked about the theme and its continued applicability to the school,

AT SANFORD

Mark said: “Sanford continues to demonstrate that it is an educational institution that has no time or interest in remaining stagnant. For nearly 90 years, creating excellence has been an integral part of our culture. We strive to be as perfect a school as we can, and we constantly catch countless examples of excellence. We will always honor our rich history and plan for the future, but our continued success also relies on staying focused on the right now.” Much of Sanford’s success in its pursuit of perfection has been its ability to foster strong relationships that help to define the Sanford experience. In addition to establishing and developing distinctive faculty/ student bonds, Sanford has forged partnerships that have allowed leadership, programs, and fundraising to flourish. What follows is a pictorial essay that allows for a reflective pause, a time to showcase the excellence that has been captured in these three overarching areas right now. Even the most avid collector takes time from chasing to savor those new additions to his collection!

EMPOWERING he foundation of any institution rests with its leadership, and Sanford has been fortunate to attract, develop, nurture, and maintain strong leaders. From the board of directors to students and parents to faculty and staff members, Sanford focuses on how to model and instill qualities such as awareness, inspiration, honesty, and empathy to those in decision-making positions. As the leaders work together to build consensus through participation, all teams are active in support of the commonly shared vision of the school’s mission. Sanford catches the excellence that everyone offers and uses it to move the school towards perfection. In the process, young leaders are developed, current leaders are encouraged to grow, and leadership evolves into more of a partnership role. Several of those partners, who have pursued perfection by acting as excellent leaders, are featured in this issue.

For the past four years Head of School Mark Anderson and former Board of Trustees President Bill Lafferty worked collaboratively to make a strong Sanford even better. Their joint leadership led to initiatives that created new and upgraded facilities, enrollment stabilization, and financial success. Bill, who stepped down as president in June of 2017, will remain on the board. Read more about Bill and his accomplishments on page 11.

Sanford Board of Trustees President Ted Dwyer (left, with Stan and Paris Waterman) has been demonstrating leadership and driving Sanford’s pursuit of excellence since becoming a Sanford parent in 2008 and a trustee in 2014. Ted is the chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, and last year he was the driving force behind the creation of the Stan Waterman Endowed Fund for Excellence in Coaching, which raised more than $50,000. Read more about Sanford’s fundraising success on pages 6–7.

Harnessing the power of parent leadership is one of Assistant Director of Admission Tanya Graham’s goals. Tanya is leading a parent ambassador group whose members will help us spread the word about our great school. Tanya shared that the group held its first meeting on November 15th and based on their energy and expertise, she’s confident that these parent leaders will play a key role in our quest to maintain an outstanding community.

Sanford’s graduating class, which leads our student body every year, continues to find success with college acceptances. Five million dollars in college scholarships was awarded to the Class of 2017 whose members gained acceptance to more than 100 colleges. Sanford’s stellar college counseling program has been enhanced by the renovation of Quigley Hall. Read more about Sanford’s new and improved College Counseling Center and the generous donors who made it possible on pages 4 and 6.

LEADERSHIP As Sanford continues efforts to maintain its position as a leader in the Delaware private school market, trustees are in the final stages of completing the school’s next strategic plan. Working with faculty and staff members, the trustees have developed a plan that features four pillars: • Fundraising

& Campus Improvements

• Finance &

Enrollment Management

• Diversity, Equity

& Inclusion

• Educational

Excellence

Stay tuned for details about the plan which will be released in early 2018.

One of the many reasons that Sanford is in a position of excellence is due to the caliber, dedication, and talent of former school leaders. During the June 2017 board meeting, three of those leaders were named to Sanford’s select group of trustees emeriti. These trustees joined two other former trustees—John Corrozzi, Sr. and Sandy Hammonds—to receive this honorary status.

Sharon Struthers 1999–2012 Trustee, 2005–2012 Board Secretary, 2012 Founder’s Day Award Recipient

Sharon chaired the Development and Enrollment and Retention committees and served on the Executive Committee, Committee on Trustees, and Finance Committee. Her unique insights were invaluable in developing the 2003–2004 and 2011–2012 strategic plans. More recently, Sharon served as an active member of the Front & Center Campaign Committee and the Athletic Hall of Fame Organizing Committee. Tom Allingham

Gregg Bacchieri

2005–2017 Trustee, 2007–2013 Board President, 2016 Founder’s Day Award Recipient

1998–2011 Trustee, 1999–2011 Board Vice President

Tom was integral to developing and planning the Front & Center campaign, serving as co-chair with Kathy Nachbar. His numerous contributions include serving on the Executive Committee for ten years and working on six other committees during his tenure. An ardent supporter of both the arts and athletics, Tom’s business acumen was a major factor in contributing to the school’s governance.

During his 13 years on the board, Gregg chaired the Development Committee, the Annual Fund, and the Shaping Our Future Campaign. He also served on the Finance and Executive committees. Since leaving the Board, Gregg has remained a strong Sanford supporter. His construction company has generously assisted Sanford with numerous projects, including the renovation of Pirnie Hall and Quigley Hall.

OUTSTANDING he recent attention to improving Sanford’s facilities is an outward sign of its commitment to providing the best possible environment for students and faculty to chase perfection. For example, the new Wahl Family College Center (see page 6) offers students a comfortable, dedicated facility to explore the next big educational step in their quest for academic excellence. But, the real energy comes from within those spaces, where programming continues to evolve in order to keep up with rapidly changing technology and methods of instruction. Students and teachers in all divisions have access to multiple technology devices and software to support online curricula. Academic and co-curricular programs are on a rapid upward trajectory. And, it is not uncommon to see a drone hovering above campus.

Home & School funding was instrumental in bringing a high quality, state-of-the-art drone to the Sanford campus. In addition to being used for educational purposes, the drone also supports our marketing and community relations efforts. This photo taken at Middle & Upper School Grandparents’ Day in October 2017 is just one of many beautiful images the drone has captured.

As part of Sanford’s athletic training class curriculum, students build 3-D prosthetic hands for children in need. The hands are sent to the Enabling the Future organization that connects people who can’t afford prosthetics to those who can print them. This learning experience provides students with instruction in math, anatomy, engineering, critical thinking, and problemsolving. In addition, students learn valuable lessons about helping others in need.

A robotics program is offered in all three divisions of our school. Our younger students, who work with a variety of robots and are introduced to Vex IQ Robotics, learn to enable robots to perform basic and advanced actions. In Middle School and Upper School, students work with Vex IQ Robotics in electives offered at varying levels of expertise. We also offer an after-school club in the Upper School for students who would like to pursue more advanced robotics.

PROGRAMS

Thanks to the generosity of the Home & School Association (see page 7) and several generous donors, an updated weight room and mezzanine area in the Sports Center provide a variety of exercise options for athletes and fitness seekers. Benefactors also supported improvements to the baseball field which now sports a new back stop, a new outfield fence, and upgraded dugouts.

Opportunities for students to find their paths to excellence

have grown significantly during the past year. In Middle and Upper Schools, the vast menu of electives includes new offerings that explore entrepreneurial studies, film production, environmental science, cooking, Waterbotics, and survival skills. Many of these new offerings were developed in response to student interests and requests.

RECORD–SETTING

FUNDRAISING n order to finance the many innovative and necessary 21st-century learning initiatives, fundraising efforts remain crucial. From classroom curriculum to assembly speakers, funding is required to support the programing that keeps Sanford on the cutting edge of excellence. Tuition covers only 87% of the cost to educate a student for one year; support of the Annual Fund helps to bridge that gap. Gifts to the endowment ensure that Sanford will remain financially stable and able to supplement tuition income. But fundraising is so much more than monetary donations. At Sanford “friendraising” is essential and appreciated, as those who support the school often do so with gifts of their time and talents, as well as their treasure. Like all good friends, these supporters participate and celebrate in the school’s triumphs…and they boost the efforts that allow Sanford to pursue perfection.

Adam and Kimberly Wahl Make Transformative Gifts Growth in the Upper School made it necessary for Sanford to evaluate the use of campus spaces. Quigley Hall, the farmhouse that was the school’s original home, had remained largely unused since the performing arts department moved to the Geipel Center for Performing Arts in 2016. Creating a usable space in Quigley created numerous challenges. One of those was the need to update the heating and air conditioning system. Parent Adam Wahl was brought in to provide his expertise. His excitement for the project resulted in his company, Quality Heating & Air Conditioning, taking on the entire project. Adam and Kim donated both the equipment and labor, key to the school’s ability to complete the Quigley renovations. Adam and Kim also provided a highly sought after home air conditioning system to the 2017 auction, and they have their eyes on another project on campus. Kim, an avid reader, has donated dozens of new books to the Lower School Library. Adam shared, “Mark and his team have made Sanford truly a wonderful school. It has gone from a great place for our children to the only place for our children.” In recognition of the Wahls’ generosity, the College Counseling Center has been named in their honor.

Endowment giving totaled over $450,000. An anonymous gift to assist with financial aid was responsible for much of the growth. In addition, the Stan Waterman Endowed Fund for Excellence in Coaching raised $50,000. Contributions to the Waterman Fund will be invested, with the income used to honor coaches who embody Stan’s dedication to developing the whole athlete. The first recipient of this award was Jamie Clark, shown (right) in the photo below with Head of School Mark Anderson.

The Annual Fund, gifts to unrestricted operating, hit a record level. Contributions totaled $547,633, a 13% increase over the previous year. This growth was driven by increases in trustee, parent, and alumni giving. Assistant Director of Development Amy Shirley shared, “Our faculty do a tremendous job, and have always done so. Current parents, alumni and their parents give to the Annual Fund because they appreciate the quality education and personal attention Sanford students receive.”

Increased restricted giving had a significant impact on the school. Donors chose to give $225,000 above and beyond their annual fund gift to numerous projects that benefitted the school. These included purchasing and adding Sanford signage to two passenger vans.

The Home and School Association shared with Sanford $115,000 from the proceeds of their auction. These funds were used to provide upgrades for the Sports Center weight room and mezzanine, STEM equipment and resources, and summer study grants for faculty.

Donors contributed over $1.3 million in new dollars to Sanford School during the 2016–2017 school year, the highest total ever in a noncapital campaign year. This generosity positively impacted all areas of the school—improving programs, upgrading facilities, and expanding professional development opportunities for Sanford’s faculty.

JOIN US as we pursue perfection anford has always appreciated the support and involvement of its current and alumni families. In fact, these partnerships are vital for the school to maintain a circular, as opposed to linear, approach to students. This student-centered focus allows us to ensure that each child in the center of his or her circle achieves the best possible student experience and outcome. Understanding the value of strengthening our ties to community members, including prospective families, Sanford has launched or upgraded several recent initiatives including: Technology upgrades beyond the classroom. The school website’s mySANFORD HUB allows for enhanced communication with parents by sharing academic progress and upcoming assignments, as well as the latest classroom news and important announcements. Broadened outreach with social media platforms. Sanford’s social media presence provides a multitude of outlets to connect with community members and to share the many ways in which Sanford is catching excellence. Sanford School pages are featured on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+. The Alumni Office sponsors pages on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. New marketing programs. While continuing to use traditional advertising remains a key strategy for attracting and retaining students, efforts to bolster Sanford’s online presence and reviews on Niche, Great Schools, and Google have been integrated into the school’s marketing strategy. In addition, the admission and marketing departments are placing greater emphasis on word-of-mouth strategies that lead to parent referrals. An expanded admission department. More and more families are finding Sanford, and they, too, want to be a part of a school

focused on chasing perfection. The school strives to find those “perfect fits” for both family and child. To better meet the needs resulting from the increased interest in the school and its growing enrollment in Upper School, the Admission Office has expanded its department. All new initiatives are built upon the school’s historical past of Chasing Perfection, which has positioned it to use that foundation today and into the future to continue to Catch Excellence. You can help keep Sanford strong and able to pursue perfection by: • Supporting the Annual Fund • Donating in kind goods and services • Volunteering • Providing important parent referrals • Supporting social media • Posting positive reviews and

testimonials online.

Your contributions—in all forms—are invaluable and make it possible for all Sanford students to chase whatever “butterflies” present themselves along the path of their academic journeys. Perfection might be elusive, but excellence is caught in any number of exciting ways every single day at Sanford! Please join us in this merry chase.

JOAN SAMONISKY RECEIVES FOUNDER’S DAY AWARD On Thursday, September 21st, Joan Samonisky

was honored with the Founder’s Day award during the annual Founder’s Day Celebration. The presentation of this prestigious award is a time-honored tradition at Sanford. Its purpose is to honor members of the Sanford community who have made significant contributions of time and effort to make Sanford the place it is today, continuing the mission of the founders of Sunny Hills.

Following the award presentation, Joan Samonisky (center) joins Founder’s Day ceremony speakers (from left to right) Director of Admission and Financial Aid and former Sanford field hockey player Jaime Morgan ’02, Head of School Mark Anderson, former Sanford Athletic Director Chip Mayo, and Dean of Students and Assistant Director of Athletics Stan Waterman.

This year’s recipient, Joan Samonisky, is entering her 30th year as athletic director at Sanford. For 22 years, Joan also held the position of head field hockey coach and led that program with great success. This impressive history at Sanford shows her dedication to the Sanford community. As Head of School Mark Anderson said, “That 30-year mark for a school leader like Joan is significant. Even more than the sports accolades she leads us to, I think Joan represents Sanford humility. She works tirelessly behind the scenes often without much recognition, and she loves it and does it for the kids and the families and for Sanford. This all speaks to why she is the kind of person that the founders would be proud to see receive this award.”

BILL LAFFERTY COMPLETES TENURE AS BOARD PRESIDENT In June of this

year Bill Lafferty completed his term after four highly successful years as president of the Sanford School Board of Trustees. His tenure was highlighted by numerous Sanford achievements and exceptional generosity with his time and personal resources. As a member of the Front & Center Campaign Committee, he played an integral role in raising the $5.8 million necessary to build the Geipel Center for the Performing Arts. His contributions included serving on the committee that oversaw the construction of the facility, working diligently to keep the project on schedule and on budget, and, with his wife Melissa, contributing to the project as a lead donor. Bill’s leadership was also instrumental in assisting the school as it responded to the flooding in the Lower School and du Pont Library during February 2015. During a period when independent school enrollment was rapidly declining, Bill gave strong guidance to making the business

decisions necessary to keep Sanford financially sound. Attention to enrollment challenges has taken the Upper School to its highest enrollment ever. When asked what he enjoyed most about his time as board chair, Bill responded: “Interacting with the people involved with running the school—board members, Mark and his team, teachers, coaches, and the Building and Grounds crew. I have often said that as part of my day job I work with a lot of boards of directors and trustees. I would stack the quality of the people on the Sanford board up against any one of those corporate boards. What a dedicated, talented, and fun group of people to be around. In addition, Mark and his team, teachers and coaches—they are outstanding at what they do. They truly make a difference in the lives of the children who attend Sanford, every day of the year.” Asked about the accomplishments he is most proud of during his tenure, Bill shared, “I really

don’t think of any of them as mine. Every single thing that we have accomplished at Sanford in my tenure on the board has been a true team effort, with contributions from many people. Several highlights that come to mind: Hiring Mark Anderson as head of school and then re-signing him twice to contract extensions and completing the new Geipel Center, with all the incredibly hard work that went into that project behind the scenes.” Bill will remain on the board as a trustee. Melissa has taken on numerous volunteer roles on campus. Their three children—Aaron ’19, Jacob ’19 and Ava ’20—are also enthusiastic contributors to student life at Sanford.

SANFORD EMPLOYEES PARTICIPATE IN PROGRAM TO FIGHT CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE Prior to the beginning of the school year, faculty and staff members attended

a two-and-a-half-hour training session designed to teach adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. This evidence-informed program, known as Stewards of Children, is designed for youth-serving organizations and for individuals concerned about the safety of children. Patty Dailey Lewis, who facilitated the training at Sanford, is the executive director of the Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children. The foundation was established by the family of former Attorney General Beau Biden, after his death on May 30, 2015, to honor Beau’s lifelong passion for protecting the most vulnerable, particularly children. Sanford’s counseling team sponsored the training program, which is just one of many child-safety initiatives that the school supports.

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING

Sanford . Special Annual Report Issue . Fall 2017

Dear Sanford Supporters, It is our honor to write to you on behalf of our Sanford Board of Trustees. As the current president and most recent past-president, we have led our board members in supporting Mark Anderson and his team with overseeing the greater strategic operations of our school. A few highlights of the 2016–2017 school year we would like to share: • Upper School admission continued to reach record highs. Sanford’s freshman and sophomore classes

are both 75 students, marking significant growth. • Sanford’s Annual Fund raised $547,633, the highest total in a decade. • The school’s endowment raised $450,000 in new funds and now stands at nearly $8,000,000. • The Home & School auction was a huge success, and $115,000 of the money raised was donated

to the school. These funds supported renovations in the fitness center, teacher summer study grants, and STEM purchases in all three divisions. • Our campus saw several renovations in the past year, including: renovation of Quigley Hall, our new

home for college counseling; a new computer lab in Stephen May Hall; an expanded faculty room in Middle School; a refurbished art studio in Hebb Hall; and new fencing on the baseball field. • Total giving to Sanford exceeded $1,300,000—an all-time high for the school in a non-campaign year.

We hope you share our pride when you read the above list of our community’s success. As a board, we are striving to provide our students with the finest Sanford experience which includes exceptional teachers, facilities, and academic resources. As school leaders, we think Sanford’s momentum in each of these arenas is evident and exciting. This Annual Report serves as our chance to tell our story of Sanford’s success—and, more importantly, to thank you for playing a crucial role in helping Sanford along the path of excellence. We hope you will help us continue our momentum in 2017–2018! Sincerely,

Theodore H. Dwyer III President, 2017–2018

Paying It

Jake (second from left), his brother Brock, mother Marie, and father Bill gather for a family photo while celebrating Jake’s graduation from Penn State.

Whenever Jake reaches a milestone in his life I recall the key role that Sanford played in his life and ours as parents. I recall preparing to transfer Jake to another school after Middle School and when I mentioned this to you [Eph and Suzanne Humphreys], you guys pretty much said we love Jake and no way are we going to let him go. You two then helped get the financial assistance we needed to keep Jake at Sanford. I am still moved to this day by the love and support we received from Sanford. Jake graduated in December, with honors, from Penn State with a degree in biomedical engineering. He then applied for and was accepted by many of the top medical schools in the country to pursue his goal of becoming a physician. He committed to Johns Hopkins and started medical school in the fall. Jake is hoping to serve the underserved when he graduates. His work ethic, discipline, and values are in part credited to the environment at Sanford, the love and support, and the education he received. We remain very grateful and appreciative and as time marches on the realization of the value of a Sanford education keeps sinking in deeper. We want you to know and understand the difference you and the many other teachers and staff made in this young man’s life and the world. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do. —Bill and Marie Ruddy, Parents of Jake Ruddy ’12

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING

Sanford . Special Annual Report Issue . Fall 2017

Proud to be a Sanford family Our son Bruno wasn’t part of Sanford since kindergarten; instead, he started in Middle School. We were moving for the second time. First, we moved from our country, arriving to Miami. Then, we had to move again! We never heard of Delaware before, but Bruno had the chance to visit 3 schools when we came here, and without a doubt he chose Sanford. It was his decision, almost 6 years ago. And from that moment, Sanford became his second home. All the friends he has met at Sanford have remained friends with him, independently of where they are now. Middle School at Sanford was a great experience for our family. When the time came to choose a high school, we thought that Bruno may want to check other alternatives, so he applied for admission to two different schools, excellent ones, where he was accepted—and yet, he chose to stay at Sanford. He has never had a doubt. And seeing how happy he is and how much he enjoys learning—the way his teachers are the best role models, teaching him to be a kind young man, to tell the truth, to learn from his mistakes, to stand for those who need him, and to give his best every day—has convinced us that Sanford is not only the best choice for Bruno, but for all our family. He is very proud to be a Sanford student. And we are proud to be a Sanford family. —Carmen Martinez Flores (shown in the photo with her son Bruno Gomez Martinez ’20)

Students Find Their Passion What makes Sanford special to me is the Sanford community. The culture that is created and fostered at this school allows each student to explore their many talents and find their passion. As a teacher, coach, and advisor I see students excel in many different roles. This is a characteristic that really defines this school, an environment that fosters a sense of exploration and creativity. Compared to other places that I have been there is a sense of freedom at Sanford that enables students to discover their passions. Sanford is also defined by its unique student body, one that is tireless in its pursuit of selfimprovement. Students here not only meet the challenges posed to them in the classroom, but they consistently challenge themselves and their fellow classmates to be better. They are personally invested in the school and each year the students take it upon themselves to leave their own unique mark on the community. The sense of progress and improvement here is defined and driven by the students—that’s what makes this place so special, and that’s why I love Sanford. —Eric Peoples ’08AA, Sanford Teacher and Wrestling Coach

The Ideal Place to Learn and Grow

I was a “lifer” at Sanford, having attended from kindergarten all the way through twelfth grade. I enjoyed playing sports, participating in theater productions, immersing myself in foreign language learning, and challenging myself in the classroom; now, I love being able to support my students in the same way my teachers supported me. The faculty here truly are unlike any I have come across since graduating from Sanford. I look back on my time as a student at Sanford so fondly and reflect with gratitude on those educators who helped mold me. I am lucky enough to call several of them my colleagues. I am so grateful to have this special connection to Sanford and to see that so many of the wonderful traditions I experienced are still alive and well today. Enriching extracurricular experiences, balanced with rigorous academics and lessons in developing a strong character, make Sanford the ideal place to learn and grow. —Katie Keeports Trachtenberg ’06, Sanford Teacher

Prepared for LIFE My Sanford experience shaped every aspect of where (and who) I am today. Academically, Sanford prepared me for the challenging coursework I would encounter in college and law school. In particular, my English classes with Helen Vermeychuk helped me to develop the critical reading and writing skills that would prove so important in both my later studies and in working as an attorney. Sanford profoundly shaped my interests and passions, including through the SRTC theatre program (thanks to Lisa Nowicki and Jeff Santoro), the school newspaper and the Honor Council. Having a firm understanding of what I liked to do and how I wanted to spend my time helped guide me into an industry about which I am passionate. Finally, Sanford taught me the importance of giving back to my community. I provide pro bono legal services and volunteer with local non-profit organizations in large part because Sanford taught me to prioritize that kind of community engagement. —Caroline Ryon ’06, Attorney

Educators Who Teach

More than Academics

I was fortunate to have an incredible faculty who focused on preparing me to succeed in life. This list includes Helen Vermeychuk, Mark Shields, John Fritz, and Lloyd Johns. The most important principles and values I learned while attending Sanford were not obtained through any specific content but through the constant example my teachers demonstrated daily. They prepared me to be successful in life not by teaching me how to win, but by teaching me how to overcome failure. How to rise above adversity and use it as an advantage—not as vindication. My teachers focused and stressed the process of learning more than the content of what I learned. I learned that grades do not correspond to wisdom. That learning never stops no matter how old or wise you have become. They conveyed the magnitude of developing one’s own character and virtue and taught me how to contribute and believe in something larger than yourself. All of this they achieved not through classroom instruction, but by living it in their daily actions. These lessons cannot be taught in a single classroom setting, only through embodying these beliefs and abiding by their principles day after day. When I graduated from Sanford, I knew I wanted to emulate the same character values and core principles they had demonstrated to me throughout my time at Sanford. —Captain Nicholas Cochran ’06, Space Operations Officer

A Supportive

Community My Sanford experience and education have been absolutely indispensable to me in a variety of ways. The small environment and hands-on educators allowed me to grow in ways I wouldn’t have at a larger school. Even today, when I give presentations to our CEO or my EVP, I always reflect on how Sanford enabled me to build confidence and composure that have helped me in my career. I also truly wouldn’t be anywhere without the network of friends I built during my time at Sanford! All of my best friends are Sanford alumni and they’re the first people I call when I need professional or personal advice. I value those friendships more than anything and I’m fully aware I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t had those people to lean on. Additionally, to this day I still reflect on lessons or advice some of my favorite teachers shared with me during my time at Sanford. I’m so thankful to have had excellent educators like Jackie Pitts, Mr. and Mrs. Gerken, Mr. Shields, Mrs. Dagenais, and Mr. Fritz who made sure we were all in fighting shape for the real world. —Claire Messano ’09, Special Events Manager

Sparking Intellectual Curiosity and Success

A

After Sanford, I attended college at Hofstra University in New York and graduated with a degree in public relations. I moved to Manhattan and lived with my brother Peter, another Sanford alum, where I got my start in PR for video games. I’ve always been a huge gamer, so I was thrilled to start working in the industry straight out of college. I was there for a few years before moving out to San Francisco for a job, which is where I still live today (almost 10 years now!). During my time in the Bay Area, I’ve been fortunate enough to manage PR for both Nintendo and PlayStation, although I recently took a job outside of gaming. I now work at Apple on the iPhone PR team, which is incredibly exciting. The fact that Sanford was such a warm and tight-knit community really helped shape me to the person I am now. Looking back, I always appreciated how the faculty tried to spark a sense of intellectual curiosity. Of course, Mr. Shields went so far as to dress and act like Abe Lincoln for an entire history class! —Andrew Kelly ’02, Apple PR Team Member

Happy to be Back Home I joined the Sanford community when I was four years old. I learned how to read short stories in second grade, recite and write my own poetry in sixth grade, and now, in eleventh grade, I have learned how to write a speech using tropes and schemes. Sanford has given me this education, which I used to think I could receive anywhere else when I was approaching decisions in eighth grade about where I wanted to attend high school—but I was wrong. I left Sanford and tried something new, because Sanford was all I knew. After my first day at another school, I was homesick. I missed my special connections with my Sanford teachers and my lifelong friends, but I convinced myself I was just filled with first day of high school nerves. However, as the semester went on, my secret longing to be back at Sanford did not cease. Eventually, I confided in my parents and before I knew it, I would be returning home next fall, my sophomore year. My return included countless teachers greeting me with “Welcome back!” I never believed people when they told me that Sanford was different than other schools with their personal oneon-one connections between teachers and students because those connections had always been a commodity for me. Leaving Sanford showed me how unusual and special those connections are. It showed me how to appreciate Sanford and taught me to never take this home for granted. —Grace Johnston ’19 (shown in the photo with her friend Chloe DiCamillo ’19)

ANNUAL REPORT OF GIVING

Evergreen Society

2016–2017 Operating Income Net Tuition $9,289,412 (82.90%)

The Evergreen Society is representative of the Sanford Pine, the school’s ubiquitous symbol. The society recognizes the commitment members of our community make by choosing to secure the school’s future through a planned gift or including Sanford as a charitable recipient in their will. The symbolism of the evergreen conveys that the gift these members bestow upon the school will, in fact, provide both shelter and color throughout all seasons of a school’s life—through both the beautiful springs of renewal, the spectacular colors of the fall, and the harshest winters. These seasons parallel not only the life of the student body within a school year, but a school within its life cycle. Through these seasons, the evergreen remains a fixed constant, tall, straight and proud. Those who become members of the Evergreen Society are indeed securing that constancy.

Sanford Alumni Notes Sanford Alumni Notes Lauren Ritter ’09 graduated from the University of Richmond School of Law on May 6, 2017, took the Virginia bar exam July 25–26, and started work as a judicial law clerk in Virginia in the Circuit Court of Arlington County on July 31. Since graduating and starting work, she has been honored by the American Bar Association and took another leadership position with the organization. On August 12, Lauren was awarded the American Bar Association Law Student Division Liaison Award for Ritter is her contributions to the American awarded in New York Bar Association Standing Committee City at the American Bar Association on Legal Assistance for Military 2017 Annual Personnel (LAMP). The award came from a Meeting. joint nomination by both the Law Student Division and the LAMP Committee. She was a liaison for the ABA and the LAMP Committee for two years. As of September 1, Lauren joined the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division (YLD) in their Emerging Leaders Program. The program is designed to fast track the involvement of former ABA Law Student Division leaders in the substantive work of the YLD after graduation. As one of seven Emerging Leaders in the program, she is the Public Service Team Emerging Leader. Lauren will work with the Public Service Team in the Young Lawyers Division on a two-year project called Home Safe Home. This multi-faceted project is designed to educate young lawyers about the pervasive, dangerous epidemic surrounding abuse and violence in the home, encourage attorneys to become involved in their own communities, and facilitate effective advocacy on both a local and national level. The following comments were shared when Lauren’s award was presented: “You don’t need to be from one of the big ABA sections to be a successful liaison. Lauren represented the Standing Committee on Legal Assistance for Military Personnel with zeal, putting a spotlight on the work it does. She demonstrated a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and exceptional degree of reliability and follow-through in organizing the LAMP Spring 2017 CLE program for more than 100 attendees—plus online viewers. She also assisted with LAMP’s onsite business meeting and a networking event with law students, which she wrote about for our blog.
