Communications Office Sanford School 6900 Lancaster Pike Hockessin, DE 19707 302.235.6500 communications@sanfordschool.org www.sanfordschool.org On the cover: Sanford strength, spirit, and smiles prevailed during our tribute to the Class of 2020.
Dear Sanford Community, When I saw the quote highlighted above, written by author Catherine DeVrye, many Sanford images and memories came to mind. The majestic evergreens, which grow healthy and strong throughout our campus, withstand myriad challenges from Mother Nature. When the tornado of 1989 devastated our campus, Sanford recovered and turned a tragedy into another period of positive growth for the school. In 2015, when severe water damage necessitated closing several of our buildings, we transformed those facilities and created stronger teaching and learning spaces. The most powerful example of resilience during my Sanford headship thus far has been our community’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To protect and preserve our community’s health and safety, we had to eliminate or modify time-honored traditions while also ensuring that the Sanford experience continued to be meaningful and valuable for our students, parents, and employees. Although school life for every preschool through twelfth-grade family was significantly changed from March through the end of the school year, the pandemic’s impact on our Class of 2020 families was profound. Many senior athletes lost opportunities to participate in their final competitions and seasons. Our visual and performing artists weren’t able to showcase their talents on stage or during on-campus exhibitions. Commencement and end-of-year senior ceremonies were either canceled or held virtually. Without question, the culmination of the Class of 2020’s Sanford journey was not what anyone would have expected prior to COVID-19. Within the class community and beyond, many individuals experienced feelings of disappointment, loss, sadness, and anger. Yet, through it all, “innate reserves of unimaginable strength” prevailed. Our seniors and their families were resilient. In this issue of SANFORD magazine, we are honoring the Class of 2020. These outstanding young men and women made Sanford history, and for the first time in the history of the magazine, we are dedicating an entire issue to our senior class. I hope that you will read about our 71 seniors, 21 of whom are Sanford lifers, so that you can see why these Warriors will forever hold a special place in the heart and history of our school. All my best,
Mark J. Anderson
To the Class of 2020: I look back over the past years of your time at Sanford, and I smile with so many wonderful memories of your class. I look ahead at the post-Sanford lives that await you and smile even more broadly because I’m certain that you will make your alma mater very proud in the years to come. Thank you for the role you have played and will continue to play in Sanford’s story. Please remember these words penned by philosopher Søren Kierkegaard: “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards.”

The Class of Makes Sanford History On Friday, June 5th, the Class of 2020 became
the first Warrior graduating class to participate in a virtual Commencement. The online graduation ceremony was held in response to conditions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Although state regulations prohibited graduates, families, and guests from gathering in the customary William L. Aydelott Quadrangle, the ceremony featured traditions that have been a part of Sanford commencements for the past 83 years. Highlights from the event included a keynote address from Upper School faculty member Eric Peoples; student addresses from Jonathan Fritz, Brooke Hollander, and Alessandra Prezioso; musical selections by Greg Fleming, Ava Lafferty, Bella Warner, and Steven Xia; and the announcement of student award winners by Head of School Mark Anderson.
The Class of 2020’s family parade through campus was a Sanford first! In the bottom photo, Lily Bachtle (front seat) and her family share their enthusiasm for Warriors and Tigers.

Sanford . Summer 2020
Jameson Volko “Jameson is an active member of the Sanford community. She throws herself into everything that she does. As a multisport athlete and leader of the volleyball team, she excels in both athletics and in the classroom. I am confident she has a bright future ahead of her as she leaves Sanford.” – Eric Peoples Upper School History Instructor, Director of Summer Programs & Director of Upper School Student Activities
NEXT STOP: James Madison University
Bella Warner “Bella has grown so much over her time at Sanford. She’s such a kind and compassionate person, but she also has a very humorous side that some people don’t get a chance to see. Bella has chosen to go into the nursing field and will continue competing as a swimmer while studying in college. UMBC is gaining a wonderful athlete and an even better person!” – Staci Krape Upper School Science Instructor
NEXT STOP: University of Maryland Baltimore County
THE SANFORD CLASS OF 2020
Jenna Warren “Jenna possesses exceptional critical thinking skills and contemplates complex ideas. She has consistently excelled with demanding coursework, and she takes challenges in stride. Aside from these qualities, though, I have leaned on Jenna to ‘give it to me straight’ when I want to test an idea. I know that she won’t sugarcoat anything, and I am forever grateful for her willingness to share her perspective.” – Abbi Smith Head of Upper School
NEXT STOP: Rochester Institute of Technology
Aaron White “Aaron has many great qualities, including his kind and compassionate manner. He pays attention to details and notices the little things that really do matter, which shows how much he cares. His random acts of kindness are likely to make your day a better one if you’re lucky enough to encounter him in your life.” – Meg Fierro Visual Arts Instructor

To the Class of 2020: Congratulations on your graduation! As you begin this new chapter, I think you will find, just as I did, that this Sanford spirit—one of kindness, dedication, flexibility, and selflessness—will be with you always. It will help you find new friendships while nurturing your old ones. It will help you try new things that might become life passions. It will quell the anxious feelings that will allow you to take risks that will make you grow. My Sanford spirit did these things for me as an alum, and I hope it will serve you just as well. Your excitement about the future is contagious, and I can’t wait to see what you do next. If you are anything like me, perhaps you find this end to your time as a student here a little bittersweet. I was so ready to begin my new journey, but I missed my Sanford family. I remember thinking about my final walk across that graduation stage and saying to myself, this can’t possibly be it. That feeling of uncertainty is exactly why I took the role of alumni relations coordinator, and it starts with your class. This year, we are making a commitment to provide you with new resources and support, opportunities for you to connect with other alumni, ways to stay involved and up-to-date with campus activities, and ways we can learn from you as alums. Stay in touch with us and with each other! If your contact information changes, shoot us an email, text, or DM, and keep an eye out throughout the year for our communications. Let us know about your new classes, send us your sports and activity schedules, and invite us to your performances. We are so proud of you, and we hope you will feel just as connected and valued as alumni as you are now. Warmly...Katie Trachtenberg ’06
