Hi, I’m bellaloopa Welcome back. What a month I’ve had, and what fabulous things I found while out and about in cyber space. I’m constantly amazed at the covetable and eclectic fashion, beauty and décor delights I come across in my travels. When I stumble upon something irresistible, as I did this month, I have to pop it in my bag and bring it back to bellaloopa HQ. This month I found a sassy denim jacket embellished with studs, and shoes, bags and bustiers embellished with studs and spikes. I also discovered brightly coloured gloves in creamy soft leather; tailored houndstooth jackets and dresses; cuddly, oversized jumpers and lady-like cardigans. And so much more.

BOOKS
Book + Chair + Cuppa Inner city dating can be complicated, especially if you’re looking for meaningful sex and marriage, and not necessarily in that order. By Sharon Rhodes Reading Randa Abdel-Fattah’s first adult novel, No Sex in the City (Pan MacMillan Australia) is like hanging out with your girlfriends - if your girlfriends are 28 year-old, highly educated virgins looking for love the traditional way, which in this case means arranged and approved by your Muslim, Jewish and Hindu families. Esma and her gang Ruby, Nirvana and Lisa are graduates of Sydney University who want handsome, rich husbands who live in Sydney’s trendy eastern suburbs. The prospective husbands have to be culturally and religiously compatible. And in Esma’s case they also have to be tall and dress well. The girls, who are fun and easy to be with, form the ‘No Sex in the City Club’ to vent about all that’s worrying them. Nirvana has prospective-motherin-law issues and Ruby has fallen for a Greek guy who dropped out of school in Year 10 and says ‘youse’, which is conflicting for a high-powered lawyer. Lisa, who is a counsellor and the voice of reason, is caught up in something she cannot talk about and Esma has a family secret. Interestingly, the girls’ decision to remain virgins until married is not one of the things troubling them, although Esma admits that she lusts after her boyfriend, and resisting temptation takes willpower. Even a kiss offers too much temptation. The characters are open, funny and intelligent and it’s easy to like and laugh with them. On one date Esma is congratulating herself for being a ‘hottie’ as a car full of handsome P platers are winking and leering at her – only to realise they’re looking at a group of scantily clad blondes in the next car. She laughs at herself in a moment that is very reminiscent of the New York gang of pals the book’s title alludes to. No Sex In The City gives us a glimpse into a world where women follow traditions in a modern way. The families are loving and supportive, and there seems to be freedom, choice, trust and humour – a welcome relief from the stereotypical way young women from different cultures are often portrayed. This is a light, easy read, perfect for a cold, wet winter’s day.

PEOPLE
E-TAIL THERAPY Agy Todt, an early adopter of online shopping liked it so much she started her own e-tail business.
I
t’s a good thing Agy Todt, founder of www.mynetsale.com.au, jogs every day, because her work keeps her at her desk for long hours. “We work straight through and order everything online, even lunch,” she says of the rice paper rolls and steamed dumplings her staff order from Miss Chu in Sydney’s Darlinghurst. Online transactions are a way of life for 30-year old Todt. “It’s terrible but it’s so convenient, I don’t know how we managed to work and run our lives before online shopping,” she says. Todt began shopping online for clothes and accessories on eBay ten years ago. “One of the first things I bought was a Givenchy Pumpkin Bag, which cost me $800 – I had to save up for it, and I still have it,” Todt says. It began a love affair with all things Givenchy, and a shopping trend for Todt, who says she appreciates quality and is “willing to save my pennies and invest in classic pieces.” Another purchase at that time, a pair of black Burberry riding boots that she wore until they almost fell apart, set her back $600 of birthday money. Although Todt found online shopping effortless, she was frustrated by the upside down seasons she encountered when shopping offshore. “When you want to buy gear for an Australian winter all the Northern Hemisphere e-tailers are selling summer clothes,” she says. It was one of the motivations for creating her business www.mynetsale.com.au, which offers designer clothes from Europe and America that are in step with Australian seasons and discounted by 75 percent.
12
www.bellaloopa.com.au
Todt, who began her career as an architect, admits that she’s obsessed with fashion. She follows bloggers such as The Sartorialist, Style by King and 4th and Bleeker Blog. “I can look at clothes and pick the brand and the season from across the road,” she says. And she uses that keen eye when selecting product for www. mynetsale.com.au, and when shopping online.
“I don’t know how we managed to work and run our lives before online shopping.” One of her favourite online destinations is Net-A-Porter where she looks for labels such as Givenchy, Céline and Isabel Marant. “I’m willing to spend more on those labels,” says the stylish blonde. “I prefer not to spend the full price and wait for the sales, but if there’s a piece you’re obsessed with it can be hard to resist.” For casual gear Todt goes to J Brand for jeans and Bassike for soft cotton T-shirts. A tip for online shopping according to Todt is to know what works for you and to be loyal to your favourite labels and brands. “I buy L’Occitane shampoo online every six weeks and conditioner every ten weeks,” she says. She’s equally loyal to Becca cosmetics and stocks up every six months. For running gear she clicks on Rebel Sport for sports’ clothes and Eastbay for shoes. “I started shopping online for convenience and now it’s a way of life, and my job,” Todt says. “It’s ironic that something that gives you access to the world keeps you sitting in the same spot.”

Fairytale good girls and bad have been given a makeover. By Melisande Clarke
Universal Pictures
In fairytales of yore the heroine was predictably pale of skin and frock, and the wicked queen had a black heart and gown to match. In terms of female role models neither was much chop – the princess was a twodimensional goody-two-shoes and the queen was unredeemably bad to the bone. Recently however, one fairytale has been re-imagined and this time around the characters and their clobber aren’t so black and white. Snow White and the Huntsman (Universal Pictures), the latest take on the classic good vs. evil tale, gives us two 21st Century female archetypes in fairytale guise. The princess has morphed from wimp to warrior, and the
Bad girls get good gowns.
Universal Pictures
Refashioning Fairytales wicked queen, has a complex back -story, and a wardrobe to die for. Sure, Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) is vain and has some wacky beauty routines, but who hasn’t thought of choking the beauty out of pretty maidens to fight the seven signs of ageing?
“Snow White has changed gear and she’s never looked better” And is she really so different to you and me? How often have you stood in front of a mirror questioning your face and figure? “Mirror, mirror do not dis, does my bum look big in this?” And it’s good to see an evil queen decked out in glam gear. The gold get-up she wears after squeezing the beauty out of the unfortunate maidens is fabulous.
There’s nothing froufrou about this warrior princess’s getup.
Snow White (Kirsten Stewart) on the other hand manages to look fine without the finery. Jo Roth, the film’s producer, describes her as “an assertive, positive Joan of Arc-like figure”, and she certainly has the martyr’s feisty attributes. She doesn’t have the 12 glamorous costume changes that Queen Ravenna has throughout the film, but still rocks her kick-ass gown that gets progressively shorter and grubbier. Not to mention that suit of armour with matching shield and optional helmet that all the princesses will be wearing this season. It’s taken a long time, but Snow White has changed gear, and she’s never looked better. www.bellaloopa.com.au
