BOOKS
Book + Chair + Cuppa This novel will get you excited about reading again, as Sharon Rhodes discovered when curled up with a nice cuppa. I read this story about a little Russian boy brought up by dogs in one sitting, completely stunned by the story and desperate to know the outcome. Then I re-read it slowly, relishing every word. The idea for Eva Hornung’s novel came from reports of children living with dogs or wolves in Moscow in the late 1990s, many whom were later rehabilitated into society with great success. Sadly, this is mostly not the case with children living on the streets with humans who often abuse and neglect their young, leaving them unable to later form relationships or join society. Alone in a big city in winter, hungry four-year-old Romochka follows a stray dog to her lair and joins four puppies suckling their mother in smelly, dank darkness. So begins his life as a dog, one both repulsive and beautiful, while the reader is taken on another journey: one of appreciation for the paper-thin difference between animals and humans. Along the way Hornung spares her readers few grim details of humans’ capacity for cruelty and indifference while her packs of dogs, by contrast, are warm, loving and loyal. The page-turning Dog Boy will often have you wondering if Romochka is better off with dogs or humans; for my vote, the dogs lead by a fetid, feral nose.
