LETTER from the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

THE FASHION ISSUE

Do not think you can be brave with your life and your work and never disappoint anyone. The special courage it takes to experience true belonging is not just about braving the wilderness, it's about becoming the wilderness.” ~Brené Brown When I was 13 years old, I remember sitting in my classroom back in the Dominican Republic, talking to my best friend about our future. I recall saying out loud, “I’ll be in NYC, writing for a magazine.” In that moment, I could literally see myself, sitting at a desk, typing and looking out a window, watching the sun fall on the Manhattan skyline. It was so clear in my mind back then. I had just read Paulo Coelho’s book, “The Alchemist.” I can now understand and connect the dots from his powerful words, “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” The way Courtenay Hall [BELLA founder and former editor-in-chief ] and I met is, in itself, a series of what I will always call “God-incidences.” Joining #TeamBELLA was an honor, yet owning it was not in the cards. When the amazing opportunity arose, however, I took a leap of faith— and here we are! I am grateful for everything I learned from Courtenay and Dan Hall [BELLA’s former publisher]. Fashion Feast, our Fashion Issue cover inspiration, came to me in a dream. What better way to bring amazing designers together than when it’s fashion that’s being served? I wanted to showcase fashion by going to the source—the visionaries and creators of wearable dreams. My first pair of designer sunglasses was by Nicole Miller, so you can imagine what a treat it was to work with her on this cover. And then there’s the grace and elegance of CD Greene’s creations, which left us in awe of Tracee Ellis Ross’ AMA 2018 gown, and who has dressed music icons like Tina Turner, Beyoncé, and Mariah Carey. Marc Bouwer designed Whitney Houston’s wedding gown and was recently noted for one of the 50 most iconic red carpet dresses. Jill Martin, an Emmy award-winning TV personality, brings fashion to the everyday woman. From our hair and makeup team to our photographer and venue, this cover was one collaboration after another, and it all came together perfectly. BELLA has always produced fabulous content, and everyone who has contributed to this issue has done so with much love and excitement. My hope is that with every page you flip in this and our upcoming issues, you are left feeling encouraged to believe and belong to yourself. BELLA’s ideal is that you see a bit of yourself reflected in these pages, because in the end, how you see beauty, life, and fashion is truly defined by you. I cannot end this without thanking my husband Joshua, and our children Tomás + Samuel for carrying me through this new chapter in our lives. To BELLA’s new publisher, Cheryl Devine, and our entire team, here we go… Here’s to much more braving! With much love,

Vanessa Coppes

behind the scenes

our

Nicole Miller, CD Greene, Marc Bouwer, and Jill Martin… the common thread? Fashion. Fashion Feast features designers with whom we’ve worked for years. We wanted to honor them and get to know the people behind the glamorous gowns we love to see on the red carpets. If you’ve ever been behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week, you know the scene is one of fabulous and gorgeous chaos. It was so much fun to watch everyone come together in our “sweet” at The Sanctuary Hotel in Times Square (thank you, Marie Assante!). Pro-makeup artist Lauren Vena took direction from CD and Marc for their models’ looks. She also executed Nicole Miller’s makeup beautifully. Jennifer Capella and her Glam Life Lounge team slayed their hair wands. And what can we say about BELLA’s fabulous Cover Photographer Jessica Cirz?! She directed that shoot like a maestro at her debut concerto. Each designer brought their A-game to their individual photo sessions. The result: So many fabulous images that it was quite a task to pick just one! This shoot could not have happened without the help of BELLA’s stylists, The Style Duo Mindy Shapiro Gura and Paula Shapiro Orlan, BELLA’s Fashion Correspondent Jonathan Calixto, and Sunny Luciani. Thank you!

Inside & Out

Choices for Living Beautifully, By Vanessa Coppes

If you can get past what you’ve been told about looking and feeling fabulous, and instead interpret all of that information in your own way—a way that works for you and your lifestyle—the choices you make will not only simplify your styling routine but will also inspire and empower you to live more meaningfully every day! I wrote a book several years ago, named like this section, “5 Steps to Fabulous.” It was never meant to be about how to dress or do anything like me. Instead, it was intended to encourage and support women in finding their own definition of what a fabulous life can look like for them. From my fashion faves and my go-to apps, to my must-have beauty finds, I hope you love these recommendations as much as I do!

BANDA BAGS These bags are known for their fresh bold colors and intricate embroidered details that offer a myriad of silhouettes to complement any wardrobe. What I love most about the brand is that it is a vegan and 100% cruelty-free artisan accessories collection committed to providing their talented global community of artists with more economic opportunities, employment, and a fair wage.

PERRICONE MD NO MAKEUP FOUNDATION SERUM This skin-improving serum foundation creates a semi-matte finish with buildable coverage. Its lightweight, skinsoftening formula visibly improves dark spots and uneven skin tone for smoother, more uniform skin over time. Never in my 41 years have I ever used makeup where people have stopped me to compliment my skin. Yes, it’s that fabulous!

YOGA STUDIO APP I always knew yoga was good for the mind, body, and soul. What I didn’t know is how necessary it would become for my daily sanity! After helping me release 14-pounds and increase my strength even with a busy schedule, having this app available on my phone and iPad has made it so much easier to stick to my routine. The videos are free from distracting clutter so you can focus on what's important: the yoga.

LILLY & SCOOTER CAFTANS I have a soft spot for things you can just slip on and go. So when Lily & Scooter reached out over the summer, I knew I had to get my hands on these beautiful dresses. Lilly & Scooter caftans are all made in Morocco, the fabric is soft, and the color select is…well— fabulous!

The Latest and Greatest

FASHION

HAPPENINGS By Amanda Mactas

ALKHEMIST LA

From the makers of James Jeans comes a new label called Alkhemist, which manufactures Hemp Incorporated denim. The result of 15 years of research and development, the hemp is grown in-house, blended into the fibers of the denim, and then processed using a special resin. This unique process gives the denim the ideal amount of comfort, durability, and sustainability (thanks to the hemp, which utilizes 82% less water and has a 50% smaller carbon footprint than cotton). With the addition of hemp to the denim, customers will also reap the benefits of its anti-bacterial and anti-odor properties. The women’s collection currently features jeans, shorts, cargo pants, and jackets. A men’s collection is on the horizon. AlkhemistLA.com

IVYSISTER The brand founded by two sisters in early 2019 recently expanded its clothing line to include activewear. The fashionable and functional collection boasts pops of electric color to spice things up. The leggings feature pockets and a high-rise slimming silhouette with a power mesh waistband, making for a flattering look for all. The sports bras are equally as flattering and flaunt both shoulder and razor-back straps—simple, yet striking! IvySister.com 20

The Greatest Of All Time Sneaker has finally launched—combining a sneaker and slide into one, easy piece of footwear. The combo allows wearers to easily move from one situation to the next, from the beach to the gym, without the hassle of lugging around an extra pair of shoes. The debut collection comes in four different retro-inspired styles available in a variety of different patterns, materials, and colors. Each shoe can be ordered separately as a sneaker, slide, or a combination. GoatsCompany.com

JET SET

CANDY

The wanderlust-inspired jewelry brand is opening up its first brick and mortar store inside Grand Central Terminal, where customers can find a piece to treasure no matter their budget— prices range from $40 to $2,000. The new space will feature the brand’s signature stylish travel souvenirs, with the addition of the new Passport Stamp collection, in the playful and colorful store. Candy colors will adorn the walls, along with inspirational travel quotes, a map of the world, and whimsical jewelry displays that will take guests around the world, arranged by continental regions. Custom engraving will also be available. Oh, and did we mention the hot pink Lady Liberty statue? Grand Central Terminal, Lexington Passage, 89 East 42nd Street.

THE INDEPENDENT HANDBAG

CELEBRATE 13YEARS

H

osted in New York City, the Independent Handbag Designer Awards (IHDA) recently celebrated its 13th year, gathering 40 finalists from all over the world for an unforgettable evening. Recognized as the only design competition for handbags in the world, it has been the harbinger of designer success stories, such as Aimee Kestenberg, Danielle Nicole, Adriana Castro, and Yilana Yepez, among others.

BELLA sat down with this year’s winner, as well as the competition’s founder, to talk all things style and the journey to—and from— IHDA…

JEFF WAN,

WINNER OF

THE INDEPENDENT HANDBAG DESIGNER

AWARDS

Known for his intricate designs and attention to detail, Jeffrey Wan You Sew is the latest winner at the Independent Handbag Designer Awards, recognized as BELLA’s 2019 Fan Favorite. Having established his self-titled handbag brand, Jeff Wan, in 2018, he has successfully merged the NYC lifestyle with his Mauritius culture. This is a reflection of years living and working in the Big Apple, and the importance of shedding light on his East African motherland, Mauritius, which is foreign to many. Jeff originally wanted to become an architect in middle school, but while at Pratt Institute he switched his focus to industrial design, where he would have more opportunities for designing. This led to internships, apprenticeships, and assistant and associate positions at some of the most notorious fashion houses, including Diesel, DKNY, Kenneth Cole, Michael Kors, and Coach. Jeff achieved an all-time career high while creating products like the Apple Watch strap launch for Coach, and Rexy the Coach Dino bag charms and puzzles. During his time working for major brands, he also learned how to compile market research, develop designs and construction techniques with manufacturing partners, and evaluate designs from the perspective of the consumer. It was this cross-department knowledge that would be key to Wan’s success as a team member and eventually entrepreneur. Through his experiences, Jeff became inspired to fulfill his longtime goal of creating a selfowned label. “Having been in New York for eight years, every time I introduced myself, no one heard of Mauritius,” he says. He yearned to design a line that merged his lifestyle and culture. Jeff Wan, the brand, was created for the urban minimalist, animated with the colors and culture of Mauritius and shaped by structures in New York. 28

What makes this handbag line extra special, Jeff adds, is that “on an individual level, each of our pieces work to tell a unique story in which the ordinary becomes anything but.” His handbags blend imagination and utility in colorful and unexpected ways, celebrating ultra-premium design. All products are named in Mauritian Creole, and handmade from the finest Italian leather in New York’s Garment District, Italy, and Vietnam. While still a young brand, Jeff knew this was the perfect year to participate in IHDA, which he had been following since taking accessories classes at Pratt Institute. He submitted the Le Morne Lunch Box, a handbag structured like a Chinese take-out box adorned with vibrant design details. Jeff says he got the idea when a friend who was visiting wanted to order Chinese food for dinner so they could eat directly out of the cardboard take-out box with chopsticks. It was a classic image the friend had of what it was like to live in NYC, cramped in a small apartment, sitting on the floor with nothing but good friends, light shining through the window, and disposable utensils that came complementary with your meal. It was an image Jeff identified with when he first moved to New York, away from his family, to pursue his dream. “I had a ton of fear, but I was willing to put everything I had into pursuing my dreams of being a designer,” Jeff shares. The Le Morne Lunch Box is about that moment when someone feels his dreams are beginning to become a reality. The bag became an instant classic for the brand, embodying its values and mission with a color block representing the flag of Mauritius: red, blue, yellow, and green. The hardware keeps it glamorous, and the multifunctional top-handle and detachable cross body strap make it versatile for the fashionista who goes straight from work to play. “Our loyal fans fell in love, and I thought it was time the rest of the world did too,” Jeff says. Jeff WanOfficial Jeff Wan.com

EMILY BLUMENTHAL, FOUNDER OF THE INDEPENDENT HANDBAG DESIGNER AWARDS Emily Blumenthal, known as the “Handbag Fairy Godmother,” is founder of the Independent Handbag Designer Awards. She launched the award program in 2007. With previous knowledge of the industry from having her own successful handbag line, teaching at the university level, and consulting with handbag designers, she knew there was a need for recognition. “There is never a shortage of people trying to create a handbag, so I had a sense this would work,” she says. While IHDA has become a global phenomenon—thousands of applications are received each year from all over the world—the goal remains to discover new talent. “We find designers who are the creators of the next ‘it bag’ or will be the next creative director of a handbag brand or their own eponymous line,” says Emily. In the process, designers get the opportunity to build a sense of community with many traveling to NYC for the first time. The day before the award show, Emily hosts a reception for the 40 finalists as a way to build relationships and connections, and create moments together that will change their lives regardless of whether they win or not. Success didn’t come overnight for Emily, but the idea to work in the handbag industry sure did. While getting her MBA, she fell into designing through several late-night outings with her DJ boyfriend, in which she wondered why no one had ever created a handbag to hold onto when going out. When she shared her curiosity with her boyfriend he said, “Why don’t you do it?” Years later, it is her experience that has allowed her to have a keen eye for the next “it bag” designer. “I can look at a bag and see what works and what doesn’t because I have been through the process so many times,” she says. As IHDA continues to grow, Emily is inspired by the talented designers to keep it going. IHDA has morphed into a platform that highlights talent from all around the world, showcasing their take on the go-to handbag. “There is so much more to come,” says Emily, “you will just have to wait and see.” HandbagDesigner @HandbagDesigner HBD101 TheHandbagAwards.com 29

LASH

OUT HOW TO APPLY FALSE LASHES LIKE A PRO

By Paula Michelle Lalanne, Lash Expert and Founder of 5 Ways To Fabulous

48

“HOW I FELL IN LOVE WITH LASHES”

I think I may have popped out of my mother’s womb with a makeup kit in hand. I’ve always been somewhat obsessed with the concept of individual beauty…and that expression of femininity for as long as I can remember.

HOW TO APPLY LASHES

LIKE A PRO: STEP 1

I specifically discovered lashes and the dramatic affect they can create the summer after my freshman year of high school. In the central valley of California, where I grew up, it gets to be over 100 degrees on the daily, and that is the perfect formula for a mascara to melt so "enhanced" lashes were the perfect remedy. I also quickly discovered how transformational they can be.

Select the perfect lash by identifying your eye shape and goals. A lash with more volume will give you a more dramatic look, while a lash with less volume will give you a more natural look. Often, the lashes look intimidating in the box but once they are on, they really make your eyes pop.

After that summer I was forever hooked! The precursor to that is that I used to always admire how beautiful they looked on actresses in old movies, and I love how they can transform a look from bright eyed to sultry by just adding a few millimeters to the corner. It is, in its own way, a form of art.

STEP 2

EYES ON THE PRIZE…

I also consider myself to be a “beauty nerd.” I am very drawn to symmetry and balance. Just like different eyebrow shapes can complement every woman’s unique beauty, so can eyelashes. I personally have a petite face with large features, and I love the way that eyelashes can balance everything out for someone like myself. They just make me feel prettier.

INCOGNITO

is my top-selling lash. I love it because it’s universally flattering and makes a very good everyday look. It’s a subtle yet effective lash that flares out slightly in the corner to help elongate the eye and make it look longer. The best part is the set can be worn 15 to 20 times, and the cotton band ensures they are incredibly comfortable for all-day wear.

There’s nothing in the world that makes me happier than seeing the expression on women’s faces once they put them on. They are definitely game-changers for so many women I have met and now have as long-term clients.

If I had a dollar for every time I was told this, I could afford the wardrobe I really want, including more shoes! It was actually the obvious need for help in this department that inspired me to come up with my eyelash kit, AKA my “Lash Pack.“

It’s that they are overly flamboyant and look “fake.“ While multiple looks can be achieved with different lash styles, there are definitely lashes out there that are nearly undetectable. Lashes can range from as short as 8 mm all the way up to 18mm. The volume can also very greatly. I personally like a fuller look because I like the way it makes my eyes pop in photographs. Every woman has a different need and desired goal when it comes to lashes, and there is absolutely a lash out there to fit and accentuate every woman’s unique beauty.

STEP 4 STEP 5

“Help! I don’t know how to put false lashes on!”

THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTION ABOUT FALSE LASHES?

STEP 3

Once the glue is tacky (like tape), gently set the lash down where your lid meets the root of your natural lashes.

Pinch them together, pushing up toward the root.

THE LASH STRUGGLE IS REAL!

The process of putting them on is extremely simple. Most women don’t realize putting on false eyelashes is faster and easier than curling your lashes and applying multiple coats of mascara.

After trimming the lash to fit your eye, apply a thin layer of glue to the band of the lash and let it sit for at least 60 seconds. If you listen to music while you’re putting on your makeup like I do, then it’s the length of a half of a song. (During this time I like to apply my powder and lip-gloss.) It’s amazing how fast 60 seconds flies by!

Love your lashes. Yes, that’s it! Once it becomes part of your normal beauty routine, you will be amazed at how quick and easy it is.

• • •

EXTRA TIPS & TRICKS I like to use gel eyeliner along the top of my lid to create a buffer between the glue and my skin. It also makes it even easier to take the lashes off at the end of the day. Use a mascara wand with very little product on it to blend your real lashes with your false lashes. First, place your finger on your lid then wiggle the wand starting at the root of your natural lashes, blending it with your false lashes. This will deposit very little product on the false lashes and help them look blended. When your false lashes start to look a little overused, cut them into three sections and use them as demi-lashes. 5WaysToFabulous.com 49

beauty scene | tried & true THROW SOME SHADE

My skin tone these days is stuck between a post-summer glow and pending “back-to-busy” paleness, so it’s always tricky to find a good foundation match that doesn’t feel heavy. Anastasia Beverly Hills recently launched LUMINOUS FOUNDATION that’s not only super lightweight, but also comes in 50 shades (medium to full coverage) for a luminous, dewy finish. $35, AnastasiaBeverlyHills.com

SPEAKING OF SPARKLE

I always like to add a little dazzle to my lips. My secret to otherworldly, celestial, amplified, starlet lips is Charlotte Tilbury’s PILLOW TALK DIAMONDS. It’s a gorgeous rose-pink shade that leaves a wash of sparkling, golden magic in its path. When you don’t have time to put on a full face of makeup (who really does these days!?), and you just want to reach for a little something to get you glowing, I say use this lipstick to simply and easily bejewel yourself. $34, CharlotteTilbury.com

FLIRTATION DEVICE

I’m so very picky about mascara— and with a last name like mine, it’s got to be good (wink, wink!). I’m loving TEMPTU’s latest launch, BUILT TO LASH MASCARA. This long-wear, smudge-proof, water-resistant, no-flake, everyday mascara utilizes precision tubing to enhance the look of your natural lashes while delivering definition and length. It’s currently my favorite! $24, Temptu.com

All that fun in the sun wreaks havoc on your skin and hair, so I’m excited to share all the get-gorgeous goodies I’m really obsessed with. TRUE BLUE

I just love the stuff, and I’m pretty smitten with the scent! $50, MileoNewYork.com

I’m often asked how I get that extra oomph in my hair. My secret weapon: R+Co BALLOON DRY VOLUME SPRAY. This long-lasting spray takes your hair to new heights, adding instant volume and texture without leaving a sticky finish. Just shake and spray at roots for volume. For an all-over finished look, I flip my hair over and spray from mid-lengths to ends. Go big, or go home! $32, Randco.com

Visiting Blue Lagoon Iceland has been on my beauty bucket list forever, but in the meantime, I’ll settle for amazing skincare products that bring the healing powers of this magical place home. Its geothermal seawater flows from volcanic aquifers 2,000 meters within the earth emerging at the surface, and is enriched with algae, silica, and minerals. I use the LAVA SCRUB once a week—it’s composed of lava surrounding the Blue Lagoon to smooth and renew your skin. It seriously works wonders! $103, Shop-USA.BlueLagoon.com

LIGHT THE

C

urious about Red Light Therapy and its widely studied beautyboosting benefits? We asked Dr. Steve Fallek, NYC-based board certified plastic surgeon and medical director at BeautyFix MedSpa, to shed some light on this safe and effective treatment that’s making waves in the beauty industry.

WAY See Real Results with

Red Light Therapy

WHAT EXACTLY IS RED LIGHT THERAPY?

Red light therapy (RLT) is a therapeutic technique that uses red lowlevel wavelengths of light to treat skin issues, such as wrinkles, scars, and persistent wounds, among other conditions. There are many different types of red-light therapy. Red light beds found at spas are said to help reduce cosmetic skin issues, like stretch marks, acne, and wrinkles. Red light therapy, low-level laser therapy (LLLT), releases safe, concentrated wavelengths of natural light into the skin (up to 10 deep millimeters, to be exact), where your cells absorb it. It’s basically leveraging the power of light to cure literally whatever affects one’s body, including sore muscles and itchy, dry skin. It even helps enhance collagen production.

WHAT ARE THE TOP FIVE BEAUTY-BOOSTING BENEFITS?

1

Improves skin’s complexion: Beneficial effects on wrinkles, acne scars, hypertrophic scarring, and burns

Treats and reduces the appearance of sunspots and UV damage

2

HOW DOES RLT WORK?

One of the most widespread uses of RLT is to clear up skin issues like acne. RLT’s antiinflammatory effects help naturally decrease oil production and bacterial levels in skin to improve mild acne and proactively treat fine lines and wrinkles.

The wavelengths penetrate deeply and aid in the production of collagen and elastin, increase blood circulation, stimulate growth and repair of cells, and boost oxygen transfer to the part of the skin that is being treated. HOW OFTEN DO YOU RECOMMEND TREATMENT?

Everyone reacts differently to treatments depending on age and the condition of their skin. In general, best results are achieved over an eight- to 12-week period. At BeautyFix MedSpa, the treatment lasts 40 minutes and entails laying on either side of your body for 20 minutes where you exposed to a warm, comfortable light. HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE BENEFICIAL?

There is not a specific suggestion for how long. It’s a lifestyle, like going to a gym and eating well. The more you can do, the better.

3

Therapeutic effects on psoriasis, herpes, vitiligo, rosacea, and other skin conditions

Treats acne by killing bacteria beneath the skin, which causes breakouts

5

4

Improves skin clarity, texture, and tone 53

Daughter of a Music Legend,

Keeps Her Sights on the Skies—Literally By Vanessa Coppes

S

uper mom of three, Fox 5 NY meteorologist and fitness fanatic, Audrey Puente has been forecasting the weather for 20+ years. Born to legendary Latin percussionist Tito Puente, Audrey belongs to a Puerto Rican-American ethnic background. (Needless to say, knowing when good hair days would come was naturally in her future!) As she explains it, weather is the one part of the daily news that affects everyone watching. Her love for it comes from helping people prepare for their day. After completing her bachelor’s degree in speech communication at Syracuse University, Audrey enrolled in a master’s degree in geosciences at Mississippi State University. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing the prominent Latina TV and social media personality for many years. We’ve sat on panels together in which we’ve discussed women’s empowerment, collaboration, and using our platforms for social good. One thing has always struck me about Audrey—as it always does when we meet people who are living their dreams—she radiates kindness, empathy, and a genuine intention to help and support others who cross her path. On social media, you can find her in her “AudreyVerse.” Here, we had a “New York Life” heart to heart. Read on…

What’s the best thing about living in NYC? Photography by Daniel Green

Convenience! Everything I need is within walking distance of my apartment.

What is your favorite NYC restaurant?

There are so many! My newest fave is Wild Ink at Hudson Yards. Everything on the menu is fresh and yummy. The restaurant decor is chic, and the sunset view is beautiful.

What is the best part your job? Talking about the weather!

What’s the best thing about living in NYC?

My father told me that if I build a career on what I am passionate about, it will always be fun and will never feel like work. He was right!

What’s the biggest misconception people have about you?

That my bank account has a lot more zeros than it actually does.

What is your must-have beauty item?

I love, love, love After Glow To Go Mineral Sheer Tint. It puts a glowing tan on my face, is lightweight, and has SPF 20. I look tan without damaging my skin.

What’s your definition of beauty?

To quote my namesake, Audrey Hepburn, I believe that beauty comes from within. When someone likes who they are, knows their worth, and lives life passionately, their beauty shines bright from the inside out.

Prior to her current role,

Audrey was chief weather anchor at WWOR-TV My9, providing forecasts for the station’s “My9 News at Ten.” She is also a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, the American Meteorological Society, and the National Weather Association. Audrey is currently working on her upcoming book and pursuing her passion for feeding children experiencing hunger by volunteering with #HashtagLunchbag and The Bowery Mission. Along with her daughter, she also runs a coat drive every winter with New York Cares—this year will be their 5th! With a passion for fashion, Audrey up-cycles her closet on Poshmark at @AudreyVerse. MICHAEL

BUBLÉ

LEANS IN WITH LOVE AND LAUGHTER

T

BY ALLISON KUGEL

PHOTOGRAPHY BY EVAAN KHERAJ

he year 2019 has marked a boon of personal and professional success and a packed schedule for Michael Bublé. His family’s much publicized heartbreak as they fought for their son Noah, as he battled pediatric liver cancer, set Bublé on a new course of humility, which was evident throughout our conversation. With Noah’s health much improved, Bublé has re-emerged with a new album, aptly titled Love, on which he collaborated with megamusic producer, David Foster; a sold-out worldwide tour; and a musical TV special (his seventh!), which recently aired on NBC. My conversation with Michael Bublé is one of his most authentic and reflective to date. We covered the subjects of parenthood, success, love, humor, and of course, his music.

I was watching footage of you performing, and you always reduce me to tears. You probably hear stories like this all the time, but when my son was a newborn, I had a routine with him every night—before I put him down in his crib, I would pick him up in my arms and slow dance with him to your music. When I hear “Home” or “Quando Quando Quando,” I just lose it, because I think back to that beautiful time. That’s great. He’s your boyfriend. It sounds so strange to say that, and whenever I say that, people are like, “That sounds weird,” but it’s not. Obviously, not in that way, but it is romantic. He’s going to love you forever. You’ll be the love of his life and he’s the love of your life.

I’m banking on it. I love my boys and I’m close with my boys, but it’s not the same as with my daughter. Everyone told me it would be different, and I was like, “No, no it won’t be.” And it’s different. She looks at me with those big blue eyes and I’m toast. 56

You must hear stories like mine all the time. Do people constantly share with you how your music has been weaved into their most important memories? Oh, for sure. It allows me to have an even greater sense of fulfillment when people come up to me and tell me how my music has impacted or affected their lives. More than anything, I think I have had servicemen and servicewomen tell me that they’ve gone through scary things and been away for long amounts of time in places that were obviously not comfortable for them, and that songs like “Home” brought them a ton of peace. I’ve also heard stories from people who have gone through terrible breakups and people who have been legitimately lonely. They’ve said to me, “The song ‘Haven’t Met You Yet’ is getting me through.” It’s a testament to the power of music. Melody is the voice of God, I think.

I’ve been listening to this author and speaker named Dr. Joe Dispenza. He studies the patterns of the human brain and how we create our own reality. He essentially talks about how anybody who has ever achieved something great has been able to believe in a vision and believe in a life for themselves that they couldn’t yet perceive with their physical senses. When I read that you, from the age of 2, knew you were going to be a singer, slept with your Bible at night and prayed for it, and you held strong to that vision for all of those years before it actually materialized in your life, I put you in that great category. There is a Canadian writer [Malcolm Gladwell], who wrote a book called “The Outliers.” His whole premise was that to truly become great at something, you need to put in 10,000 hours of work. And if you find anyone who’s become truly great at what they do, they have put in that amount of time.

celebrity connection

There are little parts of what you were talking about that mix with the practical application of doing things enough and focusing enough. You learn by osmosis and your experience helps you to grow. Then, by the time you get your opportunity, you’re ready. Number one, I loved it—I had a passion for the music and the songs and all of that. But I did the work; I practiced, I sang, and I studied. I get what you’re saying. You’re talking about visualizing. I have a friend who tells me often that he used to walk down the street and say to himself, “I have a million dollars.” Not, “I want a million dollars,” but “I have a million dollars; I am successful.”

You’re living it and believing it, rather than wishing for it.

There are times where I think to myself, “My God, I worked at visualizing and praying and wanting, and putting out all of that stuff to the universe, and it worked.” But then there’s a lot of times where I have to say to myself that I was just so lucky. A million dominoes had to fall in the most perfect way for this to have happened in my life. The question I really ask myself is, if I had to do it all over again, would I be brave enough?

I’ll ask you the question. Knowing everything you now know, if you had to start from square one, would you have the courage to do it all over again?

But then my question to her was, “But would you be brave enough to do it all over again?” And then she said, “I don’t know.” And I would have to say the same thing. I don’t know.

You took a five-year hiatus from music. What was the impetus for you to come back?

[My son] was better. We didn’t know how it was going to turn out. My heart was broken, I don’t know. It wasn’t that I ever fell out of love with music. I just didn’t know if I had it in me to go out there and be joyful. It just wasn’t something I could turn on.

And you returned with an album dedicated to love. The album’s title is a heart emoji, and features some of the most beautiful love songs. Is that because you were so filled with love and gratitude for your son’s healing?

It’s because I was in a bubble, looking out at the world, and I saw a lot of negative things happening. I realized that I had an opportunity to put beautiful things out there.

What do you think you are here in this life to learn?

Listen, I don’t know yet. I’m still learning a lot. What scares me is I’ve learned so much more in the past five years than I had in all my previous years combined. The reason I am reticent to give you an answer is because I can’t imagine what I will learn in another five. What I’ve learned is how much I don’t know. Life moves quickly, and… I think I sound like Ferris Bueller right now (laughs).

No, I don’t think so.

Wow. Well, thank God that’s not an option!

It’s a hard question to think about, because reality doesn’t come into it. Recently, my wife and I had to take our son to his checkup (Bublé is talking about his son, Noah, who is currently in remission from pediatric liver cancer). We take him every three months for checkups, and it’s really scary. My wife and I actually talked about this and we said, “My God, look at what we did.” Here we were, she was 23 years old and I was 32. We met in Argentina and fell in love. Everyone told us that it was impossible. They told us not to do it, because of the whole long-distance relationship thing. And we did it. We got married. Everyone said, “That’s crazy. That’s not going to work. And whatever you do, don’t have kids, because that’ll be murder.” And then we had kids. And then there’s what happened to our family (referencing son Noah’s cancer diagnosis). One of the first things a doctor told me was to stay strong and help each other through this. When we had asked why the doctors keep telling us that, this friend of ours who works with families going through things like this said, that something like 92 percent of couples who go through this get divorced. And many of the 8 percent who don’t have [more] children. Of course, my wife and I thought, ‘Here we are with a beautiful daughter.’ We were in the car yesterday and I looked at her, and said, “Would you do it all over again?” She then answered, “Of course I would do it all over again. I wouldn’t want anything different. You guys are the greatest joy of my life.” 58

@MichaelBuble

(Laughs) I was just thinking that!

I think [it’s] just waking up in the morning and focusing on being kind. It sounds weird, but just be kind, be loving, forgive, and try to get through this very short life. And especially when you have kids, you hope your actions are louder than your words.

Dare I now ask what you feel you are here to teach?

I do have an idea, but it’s really personal to me and I don’t want to get preachy. But I do, and I think you do too. I can hear it in the way you speak. I think you have a good, solid idea of what you are doing here.

I’ve been studying this stuff for quite some time. I hope I don’t sound too “airy-fairy.” It’s OK to be “airy-fairy.” I have my faith and I try never to put it in people’s faces, because there’s a lot of people who don’t believe the same things I do, and that’s OK. I can keep it simple and say I don’t know what there is or what there isn’t, but I feel in some way we are all connected. I know that each one of us gets to play a part in bringing goodness and humanity into the world. I feel like sometimes, because of the job I have, it can be magnified. If I can do that as best as I can, that can be my legacy. MichaelBuble.com

THE WORLD OF FASHION AND DESIGN BY ALEXANDRA ANASTASIO

CD Greene

TRANSFORMING WOMEN FOR OVER A DECADE hile it is a constant presence in our lives, fashion is always changing, evolving, reemerging, and allowing one the opportunity for self-expression. There are countless reasons why fashion is important. Whether it’s to make someone feel beautiful, or serve as a representation of a time, period, or culture, there’s a deep sense of history that is connected to the work of designers of every generation. From haute couture to ready-to-wear, distinct looks and signature staple pieces are what set each designer apart. CD Greene, Nicole Miller, Marc Bouwer, and Jill Martin—four creative visionaries in their own right—give us a behind-the-scenes look at their work, their process, and what the design world and their followers can expect next. 68

Old-world glamour mixed together with cutting edge creations forms the essence of fashion designer CD Greene’s timeless pieces. A favorite among celebrities and entertainers (he’s designed for Tina Turner), the Chicagoborn designer has had an eye for beautiful things and an appreciation for art since he was a kid. His creativity came from his family, who he says knew how to put things together really well. “My grandmother was like Auntie Mame— she was over the top and I admired her because she did everything her own way,” he says. “I loved her very much.” The elaborate designer shared with BELLA highlights from his career, the process he follows when creating, and what followers of his work can expect next.

How did your partnership with the famous department store, Bergdorf Goodman, develop?

I had been playing around with mirrors and a friend of mine who knew the fashion director said I should show her my collection. I was terrified! I met her at the store and while we were on our way up to meet the president at the time, we ran in to some ladies who wanted to know where they could find the dresses we were carrying. After she saw those dresses, she said, “Give him a window.”

When a client wants a CD Greene exclusive, what is your design process?

and fitted. Orry-Kelly had a way of making a dress with simple lines and making it very clean. The pieces from all three of these designers are timeless.

Your designs are a staple on the red carpet. Do you have a favorite?

Tracee Ellis Ross hosted the American Music Awards in 2018, and she wanted to look like she was dipped in gold, so we created a gown made up of all gold mirror. Watching the show and seeing her come out in the gown was pretty spectacular. Another great moment was seeing Candace Bushnell wearing one of my designs on the cover of her “Sex and the City” book. It was a best-seller and when I saw it I thought, “OMG, my dress is on the cover of a best-selling book.” A few years later, when the movie came out, Pat Fields [the costume designer] asked if I could make some clothes for the film, and I did a few of the dresses for the character of Samantha. I’ve had quite a few amazing and rewarding moments in the movies and on the red carpet.

If you could dress anyone, who would it be?

Oh wow, there are so many. I love Nicole Kidman, Zendaya, and Margot Robbie, whose style I love. They’re all style icons.

First, we have a conversation about what kind of event it is, the color they’re looking for, and what they feel good in. Next, I pull out samples for them to try on; it’s a process of elimination to find the one. For the person who has the time and wants something special developed, it’s really awesome. To see the finished product is especially rewarding.

What is it about fashion that excites you?

What is it about the 1930’s and ‘40's that excite you as a designer?

We’re launching CDGNY, which is a collection of dresses priced a bit more accessible. I dress mothers, grandmothers, and daughters; this was an opportunity to dress more women and make the collection more accessible. There will be 12 pieces in the collection available this holiday season at Bergdorf ’s and Saks, both in store and online. I’m really excited and think it’s going to do well.

I would see the clothes in the films and wonder, Who did this? Designers like Edith Head, Orry-Kelly, and Adrian created many of the designs that I loved. I love the movie, “What a Way to Go!” with Shirley MacLaine. She wore the most beautiful clothes in that film. I also love “The Birds” with Tippi Hedren. I thought she was so beautiful, and her suits were impeccably made

I love the fact that fashion changes and just when you think you’ve learned everything, there is something else you learn about yourself and the creative process. Fashion evolves and that’s one of the most wonderful parts of designing.

What’s up next for you?

Jill Martin BUILDING A LIFESTYLE EMPIRE

Jill Martin’s career encompasses a wide range of outlets—she’s a lifestyle contributor for the “Today Show,” creative director for the G.I.L.I. brand at QVC, New York Times best-selling author, and an all-around fashion expert. Ask her about any of her roles and she will tell you there is a common thread among all of them.

Do you give creative input on all of the lines?

“People say to me, ‘You have so many hats, what’s the thread?’” says Jill. “And the thread is it’s all authentic—everything I am doing at this point in my life I am passionate about and is true to me.”

From where do you draw inspiration?

Her “Today Show” segments are not only huge hits with viewers, they are also empowering for the women whose lives she touches as a result.

From the design, to the fabric, to the color, to the type of stud we use—I’m involved with everything. That was important to both myself and QVC because we wanted this to be a collaboration. I am the kind of person who will not put my name on something unless I truly believe in it.

A lot of my inspiration comes from my travels. I travel all around the world (often on my own) to build different collections that evoke different parts of women’s personalities.

You also collaborated with celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson. Tell us a bit about that.

We launched two years ago and recently came out with our second capsule collection; a third one is on the way. I wanted to branch into fitness and found someone who is passionate about what she does, and has a large following. Tracy has something called her “Tamily”—loyal devotees—and I thought it was the perfect “schmerge.” Tracy Anderson for G.I.L.I. has been a huge success, and I’m grateful for her expertise.

BELLA caught up with Jill to find out what inspires her, the brands she’s creating with G.I.L.I., and why she believes that you can have it all—just not all at once.

The “Today Show” segments are huge successes; what do you enjoy most with each?

The “She Made It” segment is about women who have taken an idea and turned it into a major business. I highlight those businesses, and it’s such a thrill and a learning experience to hear the different stories of how these women empowered themselves, built businesses, and started with nothing. It’s something I’m really proud of.

How do you handle all of your different roles?

With “Ambush Makeovers,” that’s a responsibility I take very seriously. It’s not just a segment; women come down to the Plaza looking for a new start. They have unbelievable, inspiring backstories. The segment is important because it’s about taking care of yourself…being your own best friend. We give women the confidence and the start of a new chapter. And “Steals and Deals” is a way for me to reach people and offer luxury products at affordable prices. Everyone loves a deal and it’s been incredible to see the responses.

As the creative director for G.I.L.I., can you describe what does the brand encompass?

It’s everything from fashion to accessories to home décor, which we launched in May, G.I.L.I. by Jill Martin Home. For fall, we brought back our jewelry collaboration with designer Jennifer Miller, and we’re also launching our beauty line. The premise of G.I.L.I. is accessible elegance.

What inspired you to create the home collection?

We have such a huge following with the clothing line that I thought it was a natural progression. It’s been thrilling to see all of the home makeovers. I always give advice on how to make over your home and now I can provide the tools to do it. JillMartin 70

Nothing comes easy, and you can’t have everything all at once. I gave up a personal life for a long time, and now I finally have balance. But when all of my friends were getting married and having kids, I was working seven days a week. I believe you can have it all, I just don’t believe you can have it all at once. Years ago Kathie Lee and Hoda said that, and I never forgot it.

What styles are you most excited for this fall?

I always get excited for chunky sweaters, blazers, and boots. I love that full suits are back, I’m a huge fan of capes, and I love a tiny bag. I’m very much a pair-down person for nighttime. And I love statement hats. I also think people are going to get creative, adding belts to suits they already have. I’m all about shopping in your closet.

As a sideline reporter for the New York Knicks, you’ve become involved with the Garden of Dreams Foundation. What is its mission?

It’s a charity associated with all areas of Madison Square Garden. We have children facing unimaginable obstacles and our mission is to help make their dreams come true. I have segued from sideline reporting to making wishes come true; what more can you ask for than to be the person who can do that? The Garden allows me to give back in a way that’s important to me, and that’s direct contact. To see the smile on these children’s faces—it’s the most important thing I do; I’m beyond grateful.

Marc Bouwer TIMELESS ELEGANCE

South African-born fashion designer Marc Bouwer achieved notoriety at just 17 years old, becoming one of the most sought after designers in his country. Three years later, after making his way to the United States, he worked under renowned designer Halston before launching his own business.

Throughout your career you’ve designed bridal dresses. What prompted you to finally create a specific bridal collection?

I had been doing quite a lot of brides and each one that came in wanted exactly what we did in the collection. They wanted something different, but not traditional, so we thought why don’t we make a small collection of those dresses, and we did.

“I’ve always loved beautiful, strong, sexy women in the movies and on TV; they are my muse,” he says.

I found that the women who came to the showroom didn’t want the typical wedding dress. They wanted a beautiful white gown with not a lot of fuss—something stunning and sleek, somewhat sexy, somewhat minimal, and not traditional. The dresses are for the modern woman.

His designs, all named after the beautiful models, entertainers, and clients he’s worked with over the years, inspire the collections he creates. In addition to his beautiful gowns and stunning swimwear, Marc launched a bridal line this past spring. No stranger to designing bridal gowns (he created Whitney Houston’s gown), Marc had never officially gone after the bridal market—until now.

You’ve dressed some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Is there anyone in particular you’d like to work with?

I’ve always been excited about the up-andcoming; those are the ones I’m excited about. I remember when Charlize Theron was going to be the next “big thing.” Now someone like Zendaya is on the cusp of being that person with “Euphoria.” Of course, I have all of my celeb clients that I love to work with, but I enjoy finding the up-and-coming because you don’t want to grow old with your audience, you want to continue and evolve. To do that, you need a youthful connection.

Along with his timeless designs, Marc continues to set the bar high and push fashion forward. His “Shop the Showroom” concept allows customers to not only acquire one of his designs online, but also visit the Marc Bouwer storefront, located above the showroom in New York City’s financial district. The beauty of this appointment-only service is that it gives women the opportunity to connect with Marc on a more personal level.

What about fall fashion has you most excited?

BELLA reconnected with Marc to talk about his work, including the bridal line, his e-commerce site for customers, and why working with up and comers in Hollywood excites him.

Fashion continues to evolve, and I don’t like to dwell in the past. I like to move fashion forward, do new things. I’m very excited about the technological advancement in fabrication, which leads to new shapes and new ways to cutting and draping.

The site is like an invitation for personal clients; they can either come to the showroom or they can shop on the site. In a way, it’s a showcase, just like Instagram; it’s all a part of social media.

Technology plays a huge part in how things can change. What has happened with social media is there is no longer one super trend; there are many trends because there are many different kinds of women in the world who have different needs and like different things. The evolution of style is continuous and a lot of it is dictated by technology and what you are able to come up with using those new fabrics. That is what excites me.

What exactly is “Shop the Showroom”?

What’s up next for you?

When we first spoke almost two years ago, you were in the process of setting up your e-commerce site. What does the site look like today?

We have a storefront showroom that allows people to come in and shop. The fashion business is continuously evolving; there are always new ways to shop. You must evaluate your business, see how you fit into the market, and [determine] what’s good for both you and your client. MarcBouwer 72

Every day something exciting happens, and that’s the great thing about coming to work because you never know what kind of email, text, or call you’re going to get. I have a really cool project coming up in December. I can’t say much except that it has to do with entertainment. Stay tuned…

Nicole Miller A FASHION DESIGNER ICON

Known for her little black dress and her signature graphic prints with ingenious silhouettes, Nicole Miller is a fashion designer whose appreciation for beauty is visible in the timeless designs she’s been creating for the past three decades.

Do you have a favorite piece from the collection?

Obsessed with clothing from a young age, Nicole says she “lived for her fashion magazines” that would arrive by way of boat, thanks to her Parisian-born mother.

What are you looking forward to debuting for Spring/Summer 2020?

“She was always such a chic person, my mom,” says Nicole. “There were all these amazing pictures of her when she lived in France; she was super well-dressed and had these 1940’s cool clothes and the high hairstyle.”

I did a zodiac symbol blouse and an evil eye blouse. We also did a handbag and cashmere sweater out of it; they’re kind of my favorite pieces.

I found some beaded ideas I really liked and have been working them into my prints, and started doing things on leather. Every season I have the leather jacket; it’s the signature jacket in the collection. We do one for spring, one for fall, and they sell out completely.

This past spring you launched a vintage capsule collection. Was it fun revisiting fashion from the 1980s?

Over the years, Nicole has established herself as a leader in fashion in addition to creating a lifestyle brand that encompasses everything from accessories, home furnishings, and now a signature line of rosé wine.

I feel like so much of what I did in the ‘80s—things like the viscose crepe dresses—everyone is doing that look again so I have sort of been filtering those in. I had done a collection of about 20 and we didn’t produce all of them, so I’m going to remake some in different prints—it’s ongoing and the vintage collection will be available all year round.

Intrigued by the work she’s doing, BELLA spoke with the timeless designer to hear more about her latest designs and newest venture.

Recently you ventured into the wine business. What was the catalyst to launch Nicole Miller Rosé?

What do you enjoy most about the design process?

I like getting the prints together and coming up with ideas for them. I also like to work on the silhouettes. I think a lot of people are not so interested in the crazy silhouette as they are in detail, so right now we’re working on a lot of details, embroideries, and trims. Customers really like those special little things.

What inspired this year’s fall collection?

I’ve always been deeply involved with the environmental aspects of things. I’m into recycling and have been working on getting the message out. For a while, I had a newsletter and occasionally still share suggestions for people on what they can do in their everyday lives. I had all of that on my mind and started up-cycling some cashmere sweaters and reusing old denim for trim. There are also things that are signature me—I use a lot of symbols in my work and in my prints. I put a lot of environmental aspect into the collection. It evolved from one idea to the next, but the original idea was all this repurposing, recycling, and up-cycling. NicoleMillerNYC 74

I have a French friend and he represents chateaus in Bordeaux; we were talking and he asked if I would be interested in having my own rosé. How could I say no to that? We did the first season as a lark, but it did so well that we are already planning a second season—we’re definitely going to have rosé in 2020.

What sets your wine apart from others?

Even though I am sure there are plenty of roses in Bordeaux, I don’t think people think of that; it’s not on the tip of anyone’s tongue. I believe that differentiates mine from the others out there, plus it’s a blend of three different grapes as well as organic.

What else is next for the Nicole Miller brand?

I have a lot of home furnishings and kitchen items in the works that I’m excited for, especially since I cook a lot. We also have our rug line, which is doing very well, and a line of furniture coming out.

GABRIELLE BERNSTEIN Manifesting a Life Beyond Her Wildest Dreams BY CHAD SCHUBERT

H

er world is colored like a wildly ambitious vision board manifested to reality. She’s a No. 1 “New York Times” bestselling author and international speaker with a tranquil home in Connecticut, a handsome and doting husband, healthy baby son, supportive friends, fit physique, and financial freedom. So what does Gabrielle Bernstein—the spiritual teaching “It girl” beloved by Oprah and Deepak Chopra—know about manifesting a life of dreams? “It’s about feeling good, baby!” she tells me on a morning phone call, laughing as she dodges a home cleaning crew to find a quiet place to chat. “Ahh, much better,” she says with a cool, contagious ease. “Sorry about that.” Gabby’s vibe is warm and welcoming, and it draws me in like a dear friend. This is how energy works— it attracts or resists the world around us—and it’s the idea behind Gabby’s new book, “Super Attractor: Methods for Manifesting a Life Beyond Your Wildest Dreams.” “I needed this book,” she tells me. “When I wrote it, I was going through a period of my life where I was really wanting to live with more ease and to accept that good things can come easily.” Like most of us, however, old patterns of fear and a need to control outcomes—which makes us rigid, closed off, and overrides our intuitive nature—left Gabby feeling depressed and physically ill as she hustled to promote her previous book, “Judgement Detox.” The stress stories on repeat in her mind and a self-imposed pressure to perform began to negatively affect her work and personal relationships. On top of that, “The Universe Has Your Back” author admits she felt guilty for not letting the Universe...well, have her back. 76

up close & personal FEEL BETTER, ATTRACT BETTER “I can tell when I’m out of alignment with the Universe because I become focused on outside goals and objectives as opposed to the joy of life,” she explains. In that state, Gabby says she has the urge to control circumstances, her energy is low, she feels resentful, and life becomes difficult. But, she says, in contrast, when she allows herself to come into alignment with the Universe (which is literally any good-feeling state), things flow easily and she feels happy, energized, inspired, and excited about life regardless of circumstances. When problems do show up, she says she’s hopeful and positive (as opposed to worried and stressed) and finds a way through every block. The “Spirit Junkie” says her biggest dream moments—the bestselling book ideas, hosting events alongside her spiritual heroes, getting booked for Oprah’s “Super Soul Sunday” on OWN—all came from a state of feeling good before the dream showed up. “When I feel good, good things come to me easily,” she says. “I experimented a lot in my own life; I would focus on feeling good and be blown away by how it would affect the rest of my day. Invisible doors open because the world responds positively to your positive energy.”

RELEASING RESISTANCE TO DREAMS While many dreams have come to fruition for Gabby over the years, in 2015 a very important one had not—motherhood. She meticulously mapped out a book-writing and promotion plan to coincide with the nine-month pregnancy process of her first child. But, month after month, Gabby wasn’t getting pregnant and says she began to compare herself to others, which left her feeling inadequate, shameful, and behind. She was trying to force an outcome beyond her control and explains how the energy of pressure, worry, and doubt actually resists the very thing we want. This understanding was her breakthrough. “I really redirected my focus off of what I didn’t have to what I did have,” she says. “I started to work that appreciation and gratitude for what was thriving in my life—so focusing on my physical health and well-being, my marriage and business, and staying in alignment with feeling good”— through exercise, cooking or anything that made her happy.

“I was allowing myself to be guided, for when we’re in that place of alignment and feeling good, our consciousness is awake and available to receive direction,” she explains. “We open our awareness to the guidance that’s always available to us.” In December 2018, Gabby and husband Zach Rocklin welcomed a baby boy, Oliver, to the world. This experience, she says, was her greatest lesson in surrender.

THE LIFE-CHANGING MIND SHIFT “I think we get in the way of living the life want,” Gabby says. It’s our tendency to focus on what’s wrong, what’s missing, and what we don’t want that draws more experiences of the same energy into our lives. In these moments, Gabby turns to a process she dubbed the “Choose Again Method” (as mentioned in “Super Attractor”), which guides an easy shift from bad-feeling thoughts (attention to lack or things unwanted) toward a better-feeling point of attraction (the good we desire and already have). Since we feel what we focus on and attract more of what we give our attention to, this exercise—witness the thought, forgive it, and choose the next best-feeling focus—is a powerful tool to change the negative patterns that resist the joyful life we crave. “Most people think they’ll be happy once they achieve a goal or get something they want,” Gabby wrote in a recent Instagram post. “They think that landing that new job, finding that great relationship, or buying that dream house will make them happy. But the truth is, you’ll attract everything you want once you’re happy.” That’s what it means to be a “Super Attractor,” and it might be the life lesson Gabby needed most of all. “Writing this book healed me,” she tells me. “Now when I feel out of alignment, I return to the pages and remind myself of what I know to be true.”

All the while, of course, she was putting the next right action toward conception, she adds. “I began to view things not as a task or a bummer, but as the next step closer.” By shifting her focus, Gabby began to feel better about herself and more connected to her spiritual foundation. Bringing Her Talents From Stage to Screen BY ALEXANDRA ANASTASIO Photography by Jenny Anderson Makeup by Steve Schepis

rom stage to screen, singer, dancer, and actor Carly Hughes is living out her childhood dream.

Her first taste of performing live came in fifth grade when she landed the title character in her school’s production of “Robin Hood.” Watching Golden Age musicals on VHS tapes borrowed from the library, Carly didn’t realize that the performance talent she saw before her was attainable. “Watching movies and seeing people on TV as a kid, you thought, yeah that’s what they do, but if you don’t grow up around it, it’s not something at the forefront of your mind,” she says. Best known for her work on Broadway in shows like, “Chicago,” “Pippin,” and “Beautiful: The Carol King Musical,” the gifted actress has shifted over to TV as a regular cast member in ABC’s hit comedy, “American Housewife,” alongside Katy Mixon and Ali Wong (Friday nights on ABC). While her talent is evident—she has starred in eight Broadway shows— Carly’s passions extend beyond performing. BELLA recently sat down with the triple talented performer to talk about her work, the transition from stage to screen, and some of her favorite pastimes.

getting to know

82

How did your Broadway career take off?

I started working in Summer Stock and would perform at various regional theaters around the country. I was lucky enough to work in some reputable ones and I played all of the leads, so I had the experience and a nice resume when I got to New York. But I didn’t know how to do this and thought, ‘Do I get an agent?’—which I did shortly after moving. I continued with regional work for three years consistently and booked the first Broadway audition I went on [for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee].

What ran through your mind when you got that call? I dropped to my knees, crying. I probably had $400 to my name at the time, and rent was due. I was elated. In my mind, I thought ‘I made it.’ I didn’t even know what ‘made it’ meant, but I thought, I can pay rent, I can pay bills, and I made it to Broadway! More importantly, it was just a dream I had as a kid; I didn’t know the broad spectrum of it, but I was grateful. All of the hard work had paid off.

How has the transition from Broadway to TV been?

It’s completely different. You have more chances in TV and film, whereas in the theatre, you have one shot, and if you mess up everyone is going to see it—and it’ll probably be recorded on someone’s YouTube.

You’re heading into season four of “American Housewife.” For anyone who hasn’t yet watched the show, how would you describe it?

It’s good ol’ American fun! If you want to watch something where you get some scripted but a lot of real moments, then it’s the show for you. Our particular storyline is three friends who sit around at the table and essentially gossip. A lot of people can relate to that dynamic; it’s what you do with your friends and we get to do that in the show, which I think is cool.

Your character, Angela, is a divorced mom of two. Where did you draw inspiration from when creating her?

I was in New York for 15 years so when I moved to LA, everything was different—the people, the energy; it’s more “granola” out here in LA for me than in NY. So I draw a little bit of my NY experience and my LA experience for Angela; she’s a bit of both.

Out of the eight shows you’ve appeared in, do you have a favorite?

Do you relate to Angela, or is she opposite of Carly?

They’re all special, but if I had to pick, it’s going to be two. My number one is when I took over as the leading player in “Pippin.” That will always be my top favorite because I have never worked that hard in my life and I’m not sure I will ever work that hard again, although it’s definitely something to aspire to. I remember being so fulfilled in that role, every show. I am grateful that I was pushed to work as hard as I did and that I could sustain all of that. It was a monster beast of a role and I had to do the trapeze at the same time. There were so many bars to rise to and I did it every night. I thought, this is awesome, stretching yourself and knowing how far your talent can go. My number two is Velma in “Chicago” just because that role is awesome and I’ve wanted to play it. And because of “Pippin,” I was able to. “Pippin” kind of brought about everything.

Right now you’re focused on your work on-screen. Do you miss Broadway, and will you one day return?

I miss it every day; there is nothing like live theatre. There are no takebacks at all. And there is an adrenal rush in and of itself before you even get the audience in there. I will definitely be back. Everyone’s dream is to win a Tony Award so I have to do something to put me in the running.

Is there a particular production you would love to be a part of?

Ideally, I’d love to be a part of a new work because it’s always fun to originate something. And I’d love to do a play. But I would also love to play Glinda in “Wicked”—I just want to come out in a bubble with a wand!

They’re opposites but I can relate to her no-nonsense side. When Angela talks to Katie and gives her real, honest advice, those are the moments I relate to because that’s how I am with my friends.

As you head into season four, what would you like to see for Angela?

My hope is that they flesh her out more, and that you get to meet the kids she talks about. For the first three seasons, she just talks about them but you don’t actually see them. It would be fun to dive into her life.

Cooking is a big passion of yours; any chance you’ll do a cooking show one day?

Absolutely! I would love to. I am a big fan of sensible eats, eating on a budget, and figuring out recipes you can make that taste gourmet but don’t have all the gourmet flair that one may not be able to do. I think it would be fun. I always say if I couldn’t sing, or act, or dance, I would be a chef. I love doing dinner parties and cooking for my friends and loved ones. I find cooking very therapeutic.

As you continue to conquer your craft, what’s up next?

I’d like to tuck some movies under my belt and do a couple of dramas. I would love for my next TV show to be a drama if possible, just to stretch in another direction. I also want to focus on booking some feature films; it’s a whole other realm, and while it’s still filming, it’s a different beast. It’s a different viewpoint for the big screen, and I want to learn all that I can. CarlyHughes

arts & culture LARS TUNBJÖRK ASKEW is a retrospective exhibition showcasing the work of Lars Tunbjörk (1956 – 2015), one of Sweden’s most internationally acclaimed photographers.

Whether Tunbjörk used his special palette of vivid colors and harsh flash photography to capture big-box stores in small American provincial towns, Japanese office landscapes, or the decline of the welfare state in his hometown of Borås, he leaves behind the Swedish expression of a “Tunbjörkare” or a “Tunbjörk-land,” meaning an image or a place with particular qualities, a snapshot reflecting absurd everyday observations and a critical view of life. With equal parts humor, warmth and darkness, and a pinch of exasperation, Tunbjörk captured scenes that cause the viewer to pause, think, and in some strange way, feel a sense of recognition. ELLIE KRIEGER: Where Healthy Meets Delicious By Rose Aljure

“I was born loving food. My mother compares my becoming a nutritionist to a pyromaniac becoming a firefighter.” For TV personality, award-winning author of five cookbooks, and nutritionist Ellie Krieger, a conviction for nutritious food has always been a given. In fact, nutrition has been her constant in a world of ever-changing food trends and a myriad of diets that promise to be our last. As I sat down to chat with Ellie on a cloudy summer evening, she talked about her passion for a healthy and wholesome way of living. She also explained how her desire to educate our generation extends far beyond her role in the media. Adding to a litany of accolades too long to mention here, she recalled with nostalgia her experience being at the forefront of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, where she headed a nutrition education initiative at the “Healthy Kids Fair” on the White House lawn. “I prepped the food at the White House kitchen, and it was a magnificent day working with the kids and being part of this larger movement that Michelle Obama was bringing to the forefront,” she said. “She was— and is—such a leader in helping people see the importance that healthy food can have.”

After years of struggling as an overweight child, and then as an underweight teenager with too many food restrictions, Ellie was finally able to find balance through her studies. Now, her goal is to help everyone else find that sweet spot—the place where delicious meets healthy. “As I was learning about nutrition, I started to find for myself a healthy path,” she said. “It is my mission in life to bring that to the world.” 88

Photography by Lisa Houlgrave

As the dusk sky begun to clear, Ellie opened up about her personal struggles. Adhering to the belief that nutrition is fundamental hasn’t always been easy, she confessed. In a city where skyscrapers block the stars and the media’s beauty standard becomes increasingly harder to achieve, it is easy to veer off track and momentarily miss our fate.

Dieting: The Religion of the 21st Century

For many of you, this story may sound familiar: You’re dining out with friends after beginning a promising new diet. When you read the restaurant menu and realize nothing qualifies for inclusion on the specific meal plan to which you’ve just committed, however, you’re left feeling overwhelmed. According to Ellie, the problem with popular food trends such as veganism, Paleo, and Keto diets is that we treat them as the new religion of our century to the point where we are almost tribal about them. We hear influencers preach, in a near evangelical tone, that if we don’t engage in certain ways of eating or ban entire food groups, we will not achieve society’s health standards. However, in Ellie’s vast expertise and knowledge, she emphasizes that as human beings we thrive on a wide spectrum and variety of different diets. “I personally had a very damaging relationship with food based on a diet culture and a diet way of thinking,” she said. “I think it is an unhealthy way to live, and really not fun. It actually makes people binge. The number one risk factor for binge eating is dieting!” Ellie’s “usually, sometimes, rarely” philosophy fuels the idea that eating healthy should celebrate abundance rather than restrictions. While it is alluring to let ourselves be swept off our feet by the benefits of superfoods and by diets that vilify carbs, Ellie reminds us that there is no “never” category ruling out foods entirely—as many diets have us do. “These restrictions tend to fuel an unhealthy, all-ornothing mindset that, in most cases, prevents us from being truly, holistically, healthy,” she explained. “When you let go of the notion of a forbidden fruit, you invite a way of eating that is driven by joy and balance rather than by deprivation and fear.”

In a city where people seem to run on hopes and dreams amidst the cacophony of angry cab drivers and sirens—finding the time to eat a nourishing meal can be a daunting task. Ellie’s book promises to reign in the chaos, “focusing everything neatly in a single pan, thus making a delicious, wholesome meal suddenly doable.” More than a cookbook, “Whole in One” is a survival kit of 125 recipes— nutritionally complete meals, plus better-for-you desserts—which can be prepared in just one pot, sheet pan, or skillet. As the interview came to a close, I grew curious about what Ellie—as someone sought out by clients wishing to attain that perfect body—deemed as beautiful. Her answer was a breath of fresh air. “I see love and kindness in people’s eyes and in their gestures; that is really the essence of beauty in the world,” she said. “In terms of physical beauty, I think what really makes people beautiful is living a life of joy and healthfulness and balance—and that includes eating well, getting enough rest, playing, and relaxing, as well as working. Having balance in all of those facets in your life makes you absolutely beautiful.” Ellie_Krieger

osewood’s most intriguing liar is showcasing another side of her talents off-set with the debut of her new book, “Sasha in Good Taste.” Sasha Pieterse Sheaffer, most well known for playing Alison DiLaurentis on Freeform’s “Pretty Little Liars” and “PLL: The Perfectionists,” is taking her talents for entertaining from the TV screen to the homes of millions with her guide to celebrating. One of the best things about this book is that anyone can master the recipes. “If you’re party-planning, everything’s kind of intense and you want to get everything right. The last thing you want to deal with is a really challenging recipe that you’re not sure is going to turn out right,” Sasha told us. “My intention behind that was to create things that are super easy but taste awesome that anybody can make, no matter your age or your experience.” As a self-taught chef, Sasha thinks it’s important to have confidence in the kitchen—regardless of if you have a related degree or not—and that comes across in her crowd-pleasing recipes. This labor of love, which has been six years in the making, has something for everyone, from cocktails and mocktails (including blood bag cocktails for Halloween) to savory hors d’oeuvres and sweet treats—whiskey cupcakes included! Sasha’s love for cooking might even run in the family—her grandfather spent a good amount of time in the kitchen. “He only cooked by taste [like me], and my mom jokes around that I get a lot of that from him. It’s nice I kind of have a connection to him in that way.”

“SASHA IN GOOD TASTE” WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ON OCTOBER 8, 2019.

And since Sasha is no stranger to theme parties, having attended her share of events on the set of “Pretty Little Liars,” including carnivals, masquerade dances, hoe-downs and ice balls, just to name a few—it’s no surprise that she and her husband have hosted their fair share of fêtes for friends and family. “For a long time we were hosting a Halloween party, Friendsgiving, and Thanksgiving for at least one side of the family, and then Christmas. It’s so fun—we love it. Summer bashes, paint parties, cigar parties, and more…it’s endless.”

When asked what the key is to hosting a successful get together or party, Sasha tells all: “At the end of the day, everybody is there to have a good time. If something doesn’t go as planned, the only person who’s going to know it is you. It’s about having fun, enjoying time with your family and friends, and throwing something that you love, but making it as stress-free as possible. I think the biggest thing is being thoughtful.” SashaPieterse

in the City back in 2010 after leaving the fashion world and selling my business to become a stay-at-home mom. SITC was a creative outlet for me. I wanted to share my motherhood journey while also giving insight about my passions of fashion, travel, food, and the amazing city I call home. BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Stroller in

the City happened organically, so initially things seemed really easy for me, but now time is always a challenge for me!

HOW I HURDLED IT: I’m not

afraid to ask for or hire help, while also always being reminded of my priorities and what is truly important to me, which is always being around for my children. MOST REWARDING: The thing

that is the most rewarding for me is that I am doing something I love, but also that I am able to still be that full-time mom who gets to share these experiences with my children. Traveling and exploring new places also continues to be one of my favorites too! THE SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: For me, it’s always

BELLA boss

DIXIE

Lincoln-Nichols NAZARETH, PA INSIDE OUTER BEAUTY MARKET (IOBM) iobeautymarket.com

MY BUSINESS: Inside Outer Beauty Market

is a diverse and inclusive brick and mortar and e-commerce retailer, curating toxicant-free and sustainable beauty, wellness, personal care, and household care products to optimize the body’s health inside out. MY “A-HA” MOMENT: In 2012, I resigned

from my teaching career and had myself an “Eat, Pray, Love” moment, embarking on a self-care sabbatical in search of my true purpose. Taking a step back was exactly what I needed, but it wasn’t without two major challenges—the resurgence of acne (this time, it was cystic) and uterine fibroids. I decided to take a holistic approach to my health and began to re-examine my inner and outer beauty needs. The result? Clean skin and the discovery of my true entrepreneurial goals. I became a wellness coach, and went on to study at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and later the London School of Naturopathic Medicine in the U.K. My own health and healing journey had become the impetus for IOBM.

As a black woman, it was also important for me to position myself within the clean beauty market. Access to healthier and safer products is the reason I paused and pivoted in my previous career and business. WHY I STARTED IT: I looked out into the landscape and saw the

same pattern as the conventional beauty market. There were little to no omnichannel clean beauty retailers owned or operated by black women even though black women spend approximately $7.6 billion dollars in beauty annually (more than any other ethnic group) and are marketed the most toxicant-laden products. This means that brands for women of color are scarce on the shelves of clean beauty retailers. I’ve set out to change that with IOBM. We are creating a space that is representative of the world I and many others want to live in—one that has equity, is diverse, and is inclusive. MOST REWARDING: There’s no better feeling than living on purpose

and loving what I do each day. Whether it’s a good day or a bad day, the feeling of purpose and love is sustaining. It’s the fuel that allows me to support others with love, goodness, and grace. 98

My invention is creating a whole new category in the children’s space—a natural soothing category that currently does not exist. Moms want natural solutions for their children. WHY I STARTED IT: As a new mother, I

realized how well massage worked to calm my crying newborn. I needed an extra set of hands to help me calm my crying baby throughout the day, especially when I had two sons and was a busy, driven, and goal-oriented mama BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Finding the

perfect licensing partner who shared the same goals and visions, especially since I have additional products to launch. HOW I HURDLED IT: I researched every

prospective partner, and spoke with buyers and seasoned experts in the baby industry to get an idea of how it would be to work with that specific company.

MOST REWARDING: Knowing that my product will help to positively

impact millions of children and their families. It will help to make families’ lives a little more stress-free and easier. THE SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Knowing what my dream is and

envisioning it. It’s having unrelenting determination and perseverance, and being wholeheartedly optimistic and confident that my dream will come to fruition. ULTIMATE GOAL: To create the most successful baby product and brand,

Start on the floor with your knees bent. You want your shoulders and back to be against the bench. If using a barbell, place it on your pelvis, and keep your toes pointed slightly outward. Raise the hips (with or without the barbell) by lifting your hips off the floor and thrusting upwards. Make sure to squeeze at the top and slowly come back down. When you come down, don’t drop to the floor. You can tap the floor with your glutes but come right back up!

▶ ▶

4 rounds of 20 reps

Tip:

If you are new to squats, try putting a chair or high box behind you. As you go down, tap it with your butt and come up, which will help with your form.

How To: ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶

Start with your squat position, which is feet shoulders width apart, making sure to keep everything tight, including your core. Slowly squat down, sticking your butt out as if you were sitting in a chair. Your knees should never come forward and they should never be over your toes. Go down slowly and on your way up make sure you squeeze your butt!

PULSATING

HIP EXTENTIONS

How To: ▶ ▶ ▶

Start on the floor on all fours. If you are working on a hard floor, make sure to have a yoga mat handy! Start by lifting one leg, making sure to keep the knee bent. Keep your core tight and your wrists below your shoulders. Pulsate the leg up and down without bringing the leg too far to the ground.

4 rounds of 20 reps

It is always fun to mix up your workout routine. Make sure you switch your exercises every few weeks so your body doesn’t plateau. Add one or all of these to your next workout and make sure you tag us: @BellaMag.Co

Tip:

The farther you are from the ground while pulsating, the harder it will be. Feel that burn! 103

D

r. B. Aviva Preminger, one of New York City’s top plastic surgeons, grew up with medicine in her blood. So it was no surprise when she decided to follow in the footsteps of both her grandfather and father. “My dad is a physician and used to love to operate, and I think that was a big inspiration for me,” she says. As a kid, Dr. Preminger dreamed of becoming a surgeon—and a fashion designer. As an artistic child who always had an eye for aesthetics, it’s only fitting she chose to work in a field that allows her to create and bring to life the vision people have for themselves. Admired and respected by both her patients and her peers, Dr. Preminger is much more than just a medical professional. She cares about her patients—she’s not afraid to give them hugs—and provides a level of comfort and understanding during and even after they’re in her care.

Some of that love also comes from watching my father love what he does; I believe that rubbed off on me. There’s something about being in surgery and able to shape, mold, and create something with your hands. To have a certain vision and then be able to execute and deliver on that is an amazing feeling.

How do you balance a successful practice and motherhood?

I usually say it’s a juggling act with one ball always about to hit the floor. It’s a challenge—I would be lying if I said it was easy. It takes constant balancing and re-balancing on a daily basis to try and be there for my kids and to make sure I am running my practice appropriately. Even on the days the juggling act is hard, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What lessons do you hope your children learn from you?

There are things I hope they take away and things I already see they have taken away, and that for me is really special. I am very proud of them—they are caring, good kids— and some of that comes from seeing what I do and being there for other people.

Heart to Heart with

As I’ve run my own practice, they’ve seen the evolution of it. It’s important for them to be there and see all of that because it shows them they should follow their As a working mother of dreams—especially for By Alexandra Anastasio three young children, my daughters. It sets a life can get hectic, Dr. good example in terms of Preminger explains, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. I sat down what women can achieve—they shouldn’t think that they should do anything with the charismatic doctor to talk about her work, her family, and why less. both of these roles are all she’s ever wanted to do. “I was the kid in summer camp who would run the little infirmary,” she recalls. “I always liked taking care of people.”

ONE OF NYC’S LEADING PLASTIC SURGEONS

You opened Preminger Plastic Surgery more than a decade ago. Was having your own practice always in the cards?

It was always my dream to have my own boutique practice that delivers a certain standard of care; it’s been so special for me to be able to execute that.

Running a business is not without its challenges. What’s the best advice you would share with someone looking to follow a similar path?

Photography by VITAL AGIBALOW for HENSEL

There are many challenges. I am a doctor, I take care of patients, and in medical school that’s what they teach you. I had so much to learn about how to run an actual practice on my own and figure out the things I wasn’t taught. Whatever business you choose to run, there is no way you can know everything about how to do that. I know how to practice medicine—that I do well—but there are many moving pieces to running a practice, so the best advice I can share is to surround yourself with smart people who can give you good advice and to whom you can turn when you have questions.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Not only being able to meet my patients’ expectations, but also exceed their expectations. If I can give someone more than what they envisioned, that look on their face—they’re so happy—it makes me feel great that I’ve been blessed with the ability and the opportunity to do that.

PremingerMD

How do you focus on your own self-care?

A lot of it is maintenance—eating right, working out. I swim five times a week; that’s my peace. It also gives me mental rest, which is very important.

How would you describe your go-to style?

Simple, classy, elegant—I like to be professional in the way I present myself but I also like to be feminine. I have an artistic eye about things. I like wearing brighter colors, and looking your best is all about accentuating your best features. I love to accessorize. I love jewelry and high heels—there’s nothing better than a great pair of shoes. Even when I’m in the operating room, I’m wearing some kind of fun earrings or necklace, and my operating room shoes are a little sparkly.

What are some of the ways in which you give back?

I’m very involved with Sharsheret, an organization that helps women and their families face breast cancer. This year, I was honored with their volunteer award, which meant a tremendous amount to me. I went to Harvard for undergrad, and I continue to be involved in helping volunteer as an alumnus to interview kids for admission. It’s a great way for me to give back and help give other students the opportunity I was given.

In a career that focuses on feeling beautiful, how do you define beauty?

For me, it’s all about making you feel great about the way you look. It’s about confidence.

“Enhancing your breasts can provide balance to your figure and greatly boost your self-confidence.” - Dr. Preminger Do you think your breasts are…Too small? Too large? Asymmetric? Do your breasts droop? Have you lost fullness? Some women have never been happy with the appearance of their breasts, while others have experienced significant changes over time. Whatever your concern, there is a solution. If you want to increase breast size and fullness, a breast augmentation may be the procedure for you. Three dimensional imaging can even help you visualize your result and find the breast size you desire. Some women have enough volume, but it’s all sitting in the lower part of the breasts causing sagging and drooping. This is particularly common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss. A breast lift may be the key to restoring fullness in all the right places. Breasts that are too large, however, can cause back and shoulder pain and interfere with exercise and weight loss. If that’s your issue, a breast reduction may be the solution. At your consultation, we will discover what you like and dislike about your breasts and create a customized surgical plan that will address all of your breast concerns, leaving you looking and feeling your best - a more confident, beautiful you!

The Truth Behind Compulsive Shopping

O

h yes, I am going there…because Marie Kondo…

AND HOW TO

CURB IT

Seriously speaking, that pricey handbag you just had to have…. those black pumps (more like six different pairs because every designer By Vanessa Coppes has their own version)…the list goes on and on—but was it worth it?! Trust me, I’ve thought up every excuse to justify compulsive shopping because pre-kids, it used to be therapy. There are many treasures we’ve tucked away in our closets either because we love them so much, we don’t want to part with them, we’ve worn the bejeezus out of them, or…is there another reason? Just a few months ago, I let go of maternity jeans I was saving just in case my tubes got untied...really? My kids are 11 and 7 years old. It’s. Not. Happening. So now that it’s become trendy to purge, isn’t it time you got back to a more balanced state of buying—what you need when you need it, as opposed to what you want when you want it? Believe me, I’ve been there. I’ve done the irrational: buying a new pair of shoes for my son’s six-month check-up, stocking up on paper towels before having a heart to heart with my husband (yes, I have a thing about stocking up on paper towels and toothpaste)…I could go on and on. But here’s the truth: That all felt really good and fun and it soothed me—for a minute. As much as I love fashion, I questioned if it was rational to follow it to the point of buying compulsively. When I got really honest with myself, I knew in my heart it wasn’t. When you increase your awareness of abundance, you will be able to soothe your desires for what you want with the validation of what you already have.

1

Here are 3 ways you can start to do just that:

Make a list.

Do it before you head to the store—and stick to it. Take a friend with you if it means it will help you to stay on track.

2 3 Practice moderation.

Clear out, use up, or donate/get rid of what you don’t need. it.

Think abundantly.

When you’re stressed, your nervous system desires nesting, feeding, and grooming, therefore: buying. If you focus on how much you have, buying compulsions remain dormant.

The more you become used to this way of dealing with stuff, you’ll start to meet your need by “shopping” from the things you already have. Mix old clothes for new looks, put new pictures in old picture frames, etc. This way of living is way more creative than continuing to buy. It can also make you feel fabulously capable too!

LET’S TALK ABOUT

BOTOX Everything you need to know about the beauty phenomenon, straight from a doctor’s mouth By Jennifer DeCillis

T

he age of social media has certainly changed how we view ourselves, our image, and how we age. The onslaught of flawless, filtered faces that flood our social streams is a surefire way to induce a cringe-worthy slap of reality when we glance in that unforgiving mirror of ours. Enter Botox—the medical miracle that cosmetically removes wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles. Practicalities aside, we’ve all heard a rumor or two about the procedure— whether frozen-faced horror stories or songs of praise about preventative usages and sweat-free underarms. But what’s the truth of the matter? BELLA sat down with esteemed Manhattan-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Jennifer Levine, to get the low-down on the hot topic and all the facts in between!

What exactly is Botox—where does it come from and how it is used cosmetically?

Botox is a brand name for botulinum toxin type A, and is a neuromodulator. Botox works by interfering with the way the muscle contracts, and it is used for wrinkles involved with facial expression, such as the lines between your eyebrows, the horizontal lines on your forehead, or crows’ feet around the eyes. The term “Botox” has become synonymous with facial procedures in general. Other botulinum toxin type A products currently are Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeaveau.

Is Botox a safe and effective treatment for everyone, or are certain individuals better candidates?

Botox has been used regularly for more than 30 years and has a very high safety and efficacy profile when used properly. The cosmetic uses of Botox were discovered when injecting the product for people with facial muscle spasms. It has been injected in patients regularly for decades without problems. An experienced practitioner must inject Botox.

What are the most common areas treated with Botox? What are some areas that people wouldn’t expect?

Botox is routinely used in the upper face to treat the “11s,” forehead lines, and crows’ feet. Botox can be used f sor excessive sweating, headaches, and TMJ. I especially like it for the neck to treat “tech neck” and other lines and wrinkles in the neck. It can be used in the masseter muscle not only for TMJ but to narrow the jawline, as well as around the lip to soften lines and make the lip appear fuller. It can be used in the chin to prevent dimpling and in the depressors of the mouth and nose. 112

Could you tell us about the different types of neurotoxins currently available on the market? There are four neuromodulators cleared by the FDA—Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and the newest, Jeaveau. They all have slightly different personalities. Botox and Jeaveau are both 900kd molecules, which allows them to behave very similarly. Dysport and Xeomin differ from Botox in the size of the molecule. Dysport is dosed in a 300-unit vial and has slightly different properties of diffusion. Xeomin is a “naked” molecule and does not have any other proteins associated with it.

Dr. Levine is a trainer and/ or consultant for all of the neuromodulator companies. To receive more information or to set up a consultation, call 212-517-9400, or connect on social media @DrJenniferLevine.

THE LOVE FILES DON’T MISS THESE

7RELATIONSHIP RED FLAGS By Jarrod Thalheimer

Your relationship seems fine. Sure, it’s not all fireworks and ticker tape these days, but you both still share a bed, talk regularly, and manage to eat most meals together. There are no big fights or obvious divisions, so that should signal everything is pretty solid. Right?

Maybe not. Thanks to the daily fog of work, kids, and responsibilities, it’s pretty easy to miss the subtle realities of your own situation. Luckily, there are some obvious red flags you can keep an eye out for. While the presence of any one (or even two or three) of these should not set off alarm bells or mandate emergency therapy sessions, they should get you interested enough to do the heavy lifting any good relationship demands. RED FLAG #1: CONSTANT LATE NIGHTS AT WORK It’s one thing if you both agreed in advance that extra time at the office was a necessary evil to accomplish the shared goal of a desired promotion or significant raise. It’s also understandable if you have the kind of job that demands a singular focus for short but intense periods. It’s something else entirely when a normal workday job seems to be keeping you and yours apart for ever-increasing amounts of time. THE HARD TRUTH:

Individuals often use work responsibilities to avoid painful situations or difficult realizations at home. It’s time to…

do your best to find out if there are any issues or problems contributing to a sudden need for distance between you. 114

RED FLAG #2: UNEXPECTED NEW INTERESTS When a spouse who previously showed zero interest in anything automotive or sporting related suddenly fills the house with Formula 1 flags, gear, and posters along with travel plans to far-flung races and events, something is most definitely up. It may not mean they love you any less or that they are specifically trying to impress someone new, but it is a significant enough life change to merit special attention from you. THE HARD TRUTH:

Intense new interests are often used to mask the loss of old pursuits that are either losing lustre or disappearing entirely. It’s time to…

get involved (as much as you can) and determine if the new hobby is an item of pure interest or something designed to distract or separate. The way your attention is received will tell you fairly quickly why it exists and whether it’s a positive turn of events or not.

RED FLAG #4: ZERO CONFLICT No one is arguing that fighting is a good thing. Still, the odd verbal scrap indicates the kind of deep feeling and intense emotions needed to create the sparks of passion for each other. Having a serious disagreement every now and again reminds both of you that you are fully formed adults with your own ideas and beliefs, deserving appreciation and respect. THE HARD TRUTH:

A completely nonthreatening existence of vanilla interactions may seem peaceful, but it sometimes masks a serious lack of interest. It’s time to…see

if the lack of conflict is related to disinterest in each other or your shared life together. Challenging the idea that “no fights or disagreements” automatically equals “solid, happy relationship” is an important first step. It allows one to look deeper and (hopefully) discover the real reasons behind the lack of spark-inducing friction, and whether or not a positive way forward can even be found.

RED FLAG #5: ALL NEW FRIENDS Everybody needs friends, so when your special someone makes a new one there’s no reason to panic. But if they switch all their old friends for new ones, that’s a big deal. How we see the world influences our friendships, and when you cut off one group for another, that says the world is looking very different to them these days. That may not be good or bad, but it’s definitely worth a serious look. THE HARD TRUTH:

Getting all new friends—and suddenly erasing the old ones— suggests big changes in your partner, especially in how they now view themselves. It’s time to…

find out why the old friends have been tossed aside. Maybe there are legitimate reasons to see things differently. If not, you need to find out what this new direction is all about, and whether or not they have left room for you.

RED FLAG #6: MAJOR BODY RECONSTRUCTION There is nothing inherently wrong with cosmetic surgery or even hard-core bodybuilder training. The ability to address physical issues or fix perceived flaws is a benefit of living in a modern world. The problem comes when your spouse decides to change something significant about their appearance without even a moment’s discussion. Obviously, each person’s body is their own, but when you’re in a committed relationship it only makes sense to discuss something as transformative as a new nose, 32-inch biceps, or some other radical change. THE HARD TRUTH:

Our self-image is a critical part of who we are. When a spouse or partner looks to change themselves in a significant physical way without telling you first, there may be deeper issues threatening your relationship.

RED FLAG #3: FLAT-OUT MOCKERY It’s natural that couples tease each other. You’re sharing a life with someone who knows (almost) all your secrets and foibles, so soft teasing is normal and healthy. That’s absolutely not the case when teasing gives way to mockery. Where teasing is gentle, mocking offers a hard, humorless edge. When deployed, it does not end in a smile. THE HARD TRUTH:

By design, mockery shows absolute contempt and seeks to inflict real pain. Mocking is not the same as teasing. It’s time to… confront the person and tell them how much their

mockery hurts. If it was an honest mistake, things can be resolved quickly. If it’s something deeper, however, the truth will work its way out and hopefully allow for resolution.

It’s time to… talk about it. See if the changes being proposed are truly personal in nature

or if they stem from something lacking in your relationship. A new image is a huge change. Make sure it’s being done for the right reasons.

RED FLAG #7: SOLO VACATIONS Time away is never a bad idea. And in a world where we feel linked up 24-7 (thanks to social media), getting some alone time is crucial... until it becomes the preferred way to live. If vacationing by yourself is truly more fun than being together, something is amiss. THE HARD TRUTH:

Being together—especially in a vacation setting—is important for intimacy and connection. Avoidance of this is a serious relationship issue. It’s time to…

find out why you like being alone more than being together. Talk about what makes it more fun to be on your own and whether it is even related to the other person at all. You’ll be glad you did. 115

WHAT’S SO BAD ABOUT THE B WORD? No, not that B word. We’re talking about balance. And according to author Jennifer Tuma-Young, it’s all bunk. Wait, but isn’t having balance in life a good thing? “I think it’s the meaning we assign [to the word],” says Jennifer. “A lot of women think being in balance means being perfect.” Not so. She says women are so hard on themselves, it’s no wonder we’re under constant pressure. Her solution? “Let go and laugh,” she says. “I think laughter always brings some sort of peace and balance to a situation.” To get more LOLs in your life, Jennifer’s list of suggestions include everything from blowing bubbles to blasting music and having a dance party. “Tap into that inner child that brings lightness and joy to any situation,” she says.

Look Out for “The Woman in the Window” If you still haven’t read “The Woman in the Window” (do it!) or heard about the controversy surrounding the author A.J. Finn (look it up!), you’ve got a bit of time to catch up before the movie hits the big screen. In the vein of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window,” an agoraphobic psychologist spies on her new nextdoor neighbors, only to see a horrific crime committed—or did she? The movie stars Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, and a host of other great performers who are sure to transform this compulsively readable book into a must-see film. 117

Peer Support Organization

By Joanne Colella

In addition to weekly support meetings, Maureen’s organization offers workshops with clinicians, art therapists, and other professionals, providing options to connect with the support that resonates best with each participant. There are social events as well, because Maureen realizes the importance of getting survivors to start socializing again.

f you were to complete the phrase “She is…” with one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

That question was the inspiration for the name of the nonprofit Because She Is, founded last year by Maureen Spataro. The Brooklyn, NY, native and current New Jersey resident works to help survivors of physical, emotional, and/ or sexual abuse—and is herself a survivor of all three, starting at the age of 6 and continuing through her teen and adult years by different abusers. Despite leading a full and busy life, she eventually succumbed to the weight of her trauma, suffered a nervous breakdown, and sought outpatient counseling. After successfully completing the program, Maureen realized there were no ongoing services or groups offering a social network or day-to-day peer support when needed to deal with the lingering memories, unexpected triggers, or lasting impact of trauma. Recalling a day when the outpatients tried to complete the phrase “She is…” with a positive word about themselves, she would eventually create Because She Is, an organization that provides peer support for survivors, led by a volunteer team of survivors. In September 2018, Maureen fulfilled her childhood dream of creating a haven where those who had been victims could feel safe, secure, and surrounded by support. Located in central New Jersey, Marilyn’s Place honors a generous benefactor whose legacy helped fund Maureen’s startup. It is not a shelter, but rather a warm and welcoming home that hosts monthly support groups and other activities, all completely free. “They have to know we’re always here. There is no boundary as far as when they’re ready to come. Once they do, it’s so healing,” Maureen explains. “I can’t describe the feeling of sitting around the table with people who are nodding their heads in agreement—you know you’re not going crazy.” @bcsheis 118

@BecauseSheIsorg

“One of the hardest things when you’ve been through trauma is being comfortable in social settings,” she says. “In an abusive relationship, you start withdrawing because you begin to believe you have no value anyway, so why bother going out? It’s important to bring back the joy of being with other people.” Another important initiative, she notes, is “speaking to more families of those who have been abused to give them a perspective of what it’s like to be that person; an idea of how we think, what we’re afraid of, why we won’t talk about it in the beginning; exactly what’s going on physically and mentally. A survivor needs relief not only from how she feels about herself, but also from the burden of trying to protect loved ones from knowing what happened and dealing with the guilt, shame, or anger.” Many people think it’s better not to talk about the abuse, Maureen notes, but silence is deafening. Reactions are key, too. “I want survivors to understand the reaction they’re getting from others should be embraced. The minute we see that teardrop or hear that first gasp, it’s pure love,” she says. “When you see that sadness and they want to hug you or cry, it’s all the love you need to start to heal. That person is grieving for you and the part of you that died—your innocence, your trust, your smiling, or just walking without fear. And when that part of you dies, you have to find a new place within you for happiness to live.” Maureen is surprised that “what made me think I was the weakest person alive was what everyone else saw as my strength,” she explains. “I had to get comfortable with that and with talking about it. When the positive reactions started coming and I began getting private messages, then I knew, ‘Ok, I’m onto something, so just keep going.’” Through speaking engagements, a benefit concert held this past May, a fundraiser planned for September, and more in the works, Maureen is moving forward with her mission of helping transform survivors into thrivers. Sponsored by Brussels Airlines, BELLA’s preferred carrier to Europe

JUST SAY

T

raveling to a new, faraway place is not only about the destination, but also the journey. I had never been to Europe before, and traveling there solo was a test of courage—and full of excitement!

Yes, Oui, Sí

TO BELGIUM & SPAIN By Jessica Licciardello

I had been researching the trip, and came across Brussels Airlines flights to Madrid with a stopover in Brussels. I jumped at the amazing opportunity to visit two countries, and I knew that Brussels was full of rich history and culture. I decided to fly their new business class service, which was the best decision I could have made for a journey like this. It was a luxurious and comfortable way to travel for a long flight, and included Michelin star chef meals, famous Belgian beers and wines, and even Neuhaus Belgian chocolates! The seat design was superb; I was able to fully recline to a flat position to get some sleep. The flight attendants made me feel at home and I don’t think I will ever travel to Europe any other way. (Did I mention there was Belgian chocolate?)

BRUSSELS Upon arrival in Brussels I walked around the city to get the lay of the land. I stayed at the NH Brussels Bloom Hotel, which featured

Photography by Jessica Licciardello

hand painted art murals in every room, and was a lovely walk down the Rue Royal to the historic Royal Palace and arts center of Brussels. Here I was able to visit the mind-blowing Magritte Museum, where the Brussels native surrealist painter’s work glowed on the walls of this fantastic space. I learned that René Magritte had a history in advertising and graphic design, which resonated with me as a designer and painter myself. This knowledge put into perspective the journey of the artist within Europe, as the displays chronicled his exhibits in the major European cities. I came to realize how many artists live and work in Europe with a fluidity and connectedness to different cultural centers. Around the corner was the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Old Masters, which took a journey to the 1400s, showcasing original paintings that were so detailed, my mind was able to travel to a time before the distraction of phones, TV, and computers—where the focus was so deliberate and pinpointed. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to visit such an immense collection of work of this caliber. The cherry on top is that the museums’ admissions were included in my free Belgium Stopover pass from Brussels Airlines.

I then made my way to the Grand Place, the historic center of the city. Surrounded by museums and restaurants, it’s a magical place to take in the gold gilded architecture and amazing food. There was also an art market open in the Plaza during the day that showcased local artisans and food vendors. It was here that I ate a traditional stew and enjoyed a Belgium beer at La Rose Blanché, a beautiful restaurant with a cozy fireplace in the heart of the Grand Place. At night, the location came alive with jazz clubs and music venues, along with waffle shops offering every topping my imagination could dream up. I decided to keep it simple and traditional, and grab a waffle with powdered sugar (delicious!) and check out jazz at The Music Village, where I was once again transported through time to a place of old European charm and entertainment. In my research, I had discovered the historic Marolles Flea Market, located in an artistic community full of galleries and antique shops. I was able to pick up a few 45rpm records from a local vendor, and then I checked out some galleries showcasing contemporary art. The Macadam Gallery, Art 22 Gallery, and Galerie Matrine Ehmer featured fascinating

exhibits of local artists. It was the perfect way to end my visit to Brussels and prepare for what was next.

travel | cultural journey MADRID, SPAIN Here I was immediately transported to a warm, vibrant culture full of spirituality and celebration. I checked into the NYX Hotel Madrid, and my journey of luxury and amazement was just beginning. Not only is the hotel located in the vibrant financial district of Madrid, there is also a rooftop pool and local curated art featured throughout the hotel. I was completely in awe of the aesthetic and hospitality. (More on that later!) The Festival of San Isidro Labrador was taking place, and I walked into a fairytale land of religious ceremony and music on my way to the Plaza Mayor. There was a wonderful concert in the Plaza Mayor by the Turkish band Altin Gün, and it rocked my world. The crowd was pleasant, the people were dancing, and I felt invigorated. I walked the historic sunny streets of Madrid and found myself standing in front of La Taberna De Mister Pinkelton, a traditional Flamenco tavern, where I was taken on an emotionally charged storytelling journey by their passionate dancers. The energy and music was otherworldly, and you could feel the history in it. I couldn’t have asked for a better Flamenco experience in Madrid, as it was on my must-do list. I also walked into the studio of a local painter, Elena Villanueva Svensson, whose work is so vibrant and full of life. Her story is inspiring—after her father, abstract expressionist Jose Villanueva Berruezo, passed away, she continued to paint and work in his style to carry on his legacy.

After all of this travel, I needed a day to rest and relax. At the NYX Hotel Madrid, I lounged near the rooftop pool and cabana all day. I couldn’t have envisioned a better way to unwind and recharge. On the rooftop you can order food, drinks, and enjoy relaxing music while viewing the hand painted murals. It was absolute perfection, and my new happy place. The staff is so attentive and kind, and truly made me feel like I was at home. The entire hotel has a modern and luxurious vibe, from its cutting-edge art and music, right down to the toiletries. The location of the hotel in the financial district is unique as it is full of shops, restaurants, and local nightlife. It was a welcomed respite from the intensity of the city center, and made me feel like a true Madrid resident, even for just a few nights. 122

Photography by Jessica Licciardello

Of course, I had to visit the famed museums of Madrid, including the Reina Sofia and Prado, which house paintings so famous I had only studied them in art history books. I was able to see Picasso’s Guernica, Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights, and Goya’s The Third of May 1808. To see these works of art in person will be an experience I treasure for my entire lifetime.

ELÇIEGO The next morning I embarked on the journey to my last stop, Elçiego, to visit the Familia Valdelana Winery. It was a four-hour bus ride with spectacular views throughout the countryside of Spain. The destination stop was Logroño, and from there I met my amazing friend Judit Valdelana who, with her brother Juan Valdelana, represent the youngest generation of the Bodegas Valdelana family winery, which has been in her family since 1583. Judit took me into the Rioja region, home to many villages, including her own, known as Elçiego. It was a trip back in time to medieval architecture and a reverence for everyday life. When I arrived at the winery, I was welcomed into a warm and world-class experience. I stayed in the winery hotel, which had a balcony that overlooked the historic Church of San Anrdés and offered all of the modern amenities to absorb this majestic wine country. There is so much history in this region, dating back to the Romans who planted their vines along the Ebro River, and then the French who helped the local people expand and improve their wine-making after a vine-killing insect, Phylloxera, wiped out the majority of France’s and other European vineyards (known as the Great French Wine Blight) in the 1800s. There is also a Neolithic Age (5000 years old) stone site, “La Chabola de la Hecticera,” which is spectacular and awe-inspiring. Now the region is thriving with hundreds of vineyards and winemakers who create some of the most beloved and delightful wines known worldwide. The Valdelana vineyard is located on the border to Basque Country, and their passion and love for the land is apparent from the first moment of meeting them and seeing their hard work come to life. Juan took me on a personal tour of the vineyards, where he explained all of the challenges and care needed for the vines to thrive. It was interesting to learn about how the vines adapt to sometimes-hard conditions, and as a result they become even stronger, producing very concentrated grapes.

The winery offers a full tasting room and gift shop, and of course you can purchase their wines. One of the featured wines was CENTVM VITIS, made from 140-year-old vines and paired with edible gold flakes. There is also a museum and daily tour that runs underneath the winery in the original 15th century underground cellars. The history is deep, with artifacts from Jurassic and Prehistoric periods in the Rioja region. I am already planning my next visit there, as they have some visionary new wines in the works. You can also visit a plethora of wineries in this region like Bodegas Sonsierra, and see the modern architecture of the Frank Gehry-designed Marqués de Riscal Vineyard Hotel, which offers a spectacular contrast to the historic architecture of the region. Also, be sure to visit the fortified village of Laguardia, where you can take a tour of 500-year-old wine cellars with Pepita Uva tours. It was an experience to remember. I reflect back on this trip as one I will truly cherish forever. Say yes to an adventure just like this, because taking a leap enriches our lives forever, and also gives us confidence in our everyday lives. We step out of our comfort zone and trust the world to show us the goodness of what life has to offer. Just say YES!

ZAGREB Full of Wonder By Amanda Mactas

T

ourism in Croatia has been steadily increasing over the past 10 years, thanks in part to HBO’s smash hit “Game of Thrones,” which films regularly in Dubrovnik. In 2018, a record 18.6 million tourists visited the country, making Croatia a booming travel destination. Known for its coastal towns like Split, Dubrovnik, and Hvar, there’s much to discover right in Croatia’s capital city of Zagreb. UPPER TOWN Zagreb is split up into two main sections, the upper town and the lower town, which are both easily walkable. If you prefer to save the walking for bar-hopping, you can ride the world’s smallest funicular to take you from one part of the city to the other. Start your morning off at the Dolac Market, a bustling corner of town where locals pick up fresh fruit, vegetables, and flowers every day until 2 p.m. Meander to two of the most picturesque cathedrals in the city, Zagreb Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is hard to miss since it’s the tallest building in Croatia, and St. Mark’s Church. The former is home to one of the top 10 finest organs in the world and has two distinct stone spires that are continually being restored. The latter is most admired for its wondrous tiled roof, and if you’re in town between April and October, you can witness the changing of the guards on weekends at noon. Tkalčićeva, the cobblestoned street that once separated the

upper and lower town with a river, is now a thriving day and nighttime destination. Lined with a bar, cafés, and small shops, it’s a great place to enjoy a midday coffee or a late-night beer. Other highlights also date back to centuries past. Grič Tunnel, which recently reopened, formerly served as a bomb shelter during World War II, and is now used solely to get from point A to point B. Stop by the Stone Gate, which dates back to 1266 and is home to an intriguing legend. A roaring fire consumed

travel | culture the gate in the 1700s, but one thing survived—a painting of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus. Since then, it has become a site of prayer and hope. Many people inscribe plates and stones as a thank-you for their prayers being answered. And don’t miss the spectacle at Lotrščak Tower, where a cannon is fired at noon each day to commemorate Zagreb’s victory over the Turks. LOWER TOWN The town’s main square, Trg Jelačića, is home to many shops and restaurants, as well as concerts and festivals should you be lucky enough to stumble upon one (there are festivals almost every day in Zagreb). The lower town also plays host to a handful of the city’s many parks, all of which provide the perfect backdrop for a relaxing daytime stroll or reading session. Numerous museums line the streets, including the Museum of Arts and Crafts (which we recommend!), Modern Gallery, Art Pavilion, and The Strossmayer Gallery. It’s also home to the prestigious Esplanade Zagreb Hotel, a 5-star venue with surprisingly affordable rooms, whose grandeur and history is worth a visit, even if you stay elsewhere. TASTING THE CAPITAL “We eat bread with our bread,” is one of the first things I was told about Croatian dining. As an avid carb lover, I had no qualms about getting a little starchy over the coming days. With all of the bakeries you’re sure to pass, it’s not hard to do as the Croatians do during your stay—both sweet and savory options are abundant. One is tredlník, fried dough wrapped around a stick, baked, and rolled in cinnamon and sugar. Burek is another popular delicacy in Zagreb; this phyllo dough is stuffed with different fillings, including minced meat, cheese, potato, and they even have pizza burek. Another popular pastry is the cottage cheese and sour cream-filled štrukli. But not all the food here is carb-heavy. Roasted turkey with mlinci—a type of pasta made of thin, dried flatbread—sounds simple, but is one of the best dishes you can try. Pašticada is a common dish, which varies slightly from home to home, but is a stewed beef served with a red sauce that showcases Eastern Europe’s fresh and tender livestock. So it goes without saying that the charcuterie is equally as appetizing and shouldn’t be missed. Pair it with some local cheeses—pag cheese included—and you’re golden.

WINE NOT? Vacation equals indulgence, and one of the most enjoyable things to try while abroad is the local wine. Because of the small size of the country, it’s not easy to export wines, making Croatian wine all the more seductive.

Photography by Amanda Mactas

There are numerous different wine regions in Croatia (12 in total), the closest of which is Plešivica, a mere hour away from the capital. The diverse climate gives growers the ideal conditions for a variety of wines, most notably sparkling, rizling, and rosé. The Plešvica wine road (a beautiful, hilly trek) is home to dozens of producers, many of which are family-owned, who are more than happy to walk you through a tasting and tell you about the history of their vineyards, wines, and families. CURIOSITIES It would be remiss to visit Zagreb and not spend an hour (or three!) inside the Museum of Broken Relationships. Not your typical museum, it exhibits life, love, and loss in, at times, moving or hilarious ways. Much like life itself, the items on display fluctuate between the mundane and the heartbreaking, playing with your emotions from room to room. Continually rotating its exhibits, the museum showcases real items from broken relationships, whether from a high school breakup, a soldier lost at battle, or simply a fitness video that’s no longer used. The experience is quintessentially human.

Do not miss Mirogoj Cemetery, one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. The peaceful reprieve from the city is the final resting place of many notable Croatians and inters all religions. Stroll around the city in search of all of the colorful street art and murals. There are plenty to find! Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia, and you will find many nods to him throughout the city, including the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum, as well as plaques and statues. Croatia is known for naïve art, a type of art that looks primitive at first glance. Visitors can go to the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art or look for local artists to check it out. Hot tip: Pick up some truffle salt or truffle oil while you’re there! Truffle hunting is abundant in Croatia—and affordable! Swanky Monkey Garden is a fun, whimsical spot to enjoy a few cocktails. 127

FallFaves

Autumn in New York is so lovely—the summer humidity is disappearing, there’s a cool breeze in the air, and it’s one of the best times to be in the city. You can dine at one of the many fine restaurants, meet fascinating influencers, or stay in on those chillier nights and read an insightful book.

Here are 5 things to enjoy this fall: READ: “IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT, IT’S YOUR HORMONES” This new book by Mitchell R. Suss takes a new perspective on one of life’s more vexing questions—why is my diet not working? The book introduces a hormone-free, drug-free, all-natural alternative program to hormone replacement therapy created by women’s hormone and health expert Dr. Siobhan Kealy. If all the gym workouts, fad diets, or plain starving yourself of calories have not worked, you may want to consider Dr. Kealy’s research, which analyzes the impact hormones have on the human body. Then apply her approach as articulated by Suss to address the “hunger hormones.” DrKealy.com
