EVERY BOTTLE OF PROSECCO DOC IS AN EXPERIENCE OF ITALIAN EXCELLENCE, BUT ONLY IF IT’S AUTHENTIC.
Drink responsibly WHEN YOU TOAST, BE ORIGINAL! Only authentic Prosecco DOC has the government seal on the neck of the bottle and it’s never sold on tap or cans. Always produced within the nine provinces of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, in Northeast Italy, its unique taste expresses the essence of the Prosecco DOC Dreamland.

LETTER from the EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Fashion issue
Ever since I have a memory of my interest in fashion, Oscar de la Renta has always been present. He made an impression on me not only with his beautiful clothes, but because he, too, was from the Dominican Republic. I could aspire to see the New York City runways + Fashion Week for myself, specifically to be able to write about them—and today, here we are! As Marc Jacobs once said, “Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them.” I’ve always thought the same about fashion. You, the wearer, get to decide how you look. It has nothing to do with your shape or size, but everything to do with self-confidence + the risks you’re willing to take for yourself. Fashion can be so much fun. The story of how + why you combined different pieces to put an outfit together can be too. It’s why BELLA’s Fashion Issue always comes with the promise of bringing you the latest + most fabulous styles for you to choose what best serves you + your lifestyle. It’s a very special issue, starting with our cover star, supermodel, actor, entrepreneur, and now producer Tyson Beckford. He broke the rules, kept showing up, broke barriers + unknowingly opened doors for men + women of color to follow into the industry. His Ralph Lauren campaign is historic, unforgettable + of course, fabulous! Read all about his journey on pages 72-77. We are thrilled to have the amazing Sunny Hostin from “The View” also grace the pages of this issue. Sunny shares her truth with us + in her upcoming book, which you can learn more about on pages 78-83. Fashion Week wouldn’t be complete without some funky + fashionable “Street Style.” Photographer Brandon Parker delivers a spread we can all aspire to on pages 26-41. Another special feature in this issue goes to our brand partner Dune Jewelry, which is celebrating a wonderful milestone. Dune’s founder, Holly Daniels Christensen, started this business 10 years ago from her kitchen table. We are so excited for her, and you will be too—read about her journey on pages 84-89. This issue marks the start of year two as BELLA’s owner + Editor-InChief. Despite the many challenges we’ve had over the past six months, we’re here because of you! Thank you immensely for your support. Wherever you find yourself reading these pages—pandemic or not— make it fashionable,
Vanessa Coppes

Designing Duos By Mindy Gura and Paula Orlan (Additional reporting by Natalie Shaw)
When looking for upand-coming fashion designers to feature, we were elated to find not one, but two sets of talented identical twins! As twins ourselves, we know the power of a duo. These stylish pairs are true forces to be reckoned with, for sure. Get to know them, their collections, and all the wonderful ways they give back to the community.

eet identical twins Danielle and Chantelle Dwomoh-Piper— New York-based designers, models, bloggers, and influencers. Since the start of their journey in fashion, they have been featured in numerous magazines and on TV shows, and their talent has been recognized on a wide array of media platforms. Celebrities such as Lupita Nyong’o, Kelly Rowland, Jojo, Towanda Braxton, and others have been spotted wearing their designs.
Born to a Caribbean mom and an African dad, the DPiperTwins embrace their roots and display it in every collection through a bold and vibrant combination of colorful African print designs. They were born in New York but raised in Ghana and later returned to the United States to pursue their dreams. They graduated from The High School of Fashion Industries, as well as the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology with their bachelor’s degrees. As part of their efforts to give back, the DPiperTwins have raised funds for several non-profit organizations. They have also participated in multiple charity fashion shows, recently spent their birthday at New Life Orphanage in Ghana and New Year’s at a Village in Ghana where they bestowed numerous gifts to children. They hope to one day create their own non-profit organization to help further their goal of bringing smiles to the faces of people globally through their joy of fashion.

ruce and Glen are identical twin fashion designers and pastors earning their name—The Fashion Preachers. While pursing a career in fashion design, they were invited to The Rock Churches, which lead to a 12-year journey pastoring the Manhattan branch of the churches. Preaching at The Rock Churches by night and pursuing a design career by day, these talented twins worked for celebrity brands and also started their own businesses: BruceGlen, a leather goods company; and Put to Flight, a freelance design agency. Simultaneously, the twins built a loyal social media following in fashion and as ministers. Their message is simple: God wants to make the dream that He put inside of you come true. “As we get to know Him, we will discover how to make our dreams a reality.”

FASHION
From multi-use jewelry to the answer to your mask woes, these companies have taken fashion to the next level. While it’s fine to blend in with the crowd, these three innovative fashion brands certainly stand out, and we’re here to tell you why. By Amanda Mactas
PRETTY CONNECTED
Lara Eurdolian, founder of the award-winning blog Pretty Connected, launched her accessories line of the same name a few years ago and can now add fashion innovator to her already impressive resumé. The brand came about when Lara couldn’t find fashionable and functional camera straps to don on her many excursions, so she created her own.
YENAÉ
Friends and founders Seble Alemayehu and Fei Z. Biratu launched Yenaé back in 2018 in order to bring the story of Africa to the world. Both were born in Ethiopia but now reside on different continents—one in America, the other in Ethiopia—but both had a desire to share Africa’s rich culture in a unique way. Yenaé, which is derived from the Amharic language, means “mine” and symbolizes the friends’ desire to share their experiences with their customers. Their jewelry is made from recycled materials, including brass, sterling silver, 14-carat gold, and rhodium, as well as ethically sourced gemstones from Ethiopia. Not your typical jewelry brand, Yenaé stands out in multiple ways. While the jewelry is inspired by African culture with a modern twist, it speaks to the wearer in many ways, namely, most of the jewelry can be worn in different ways, ensuring the customer versatility with their purchase. Additionally, curated stories are offered with each item, passing on local and traditional knowledge from the provincial historians and storytellers the company works with. Yenae.com
What began as a multi-use strap for cameras, water bottles, and purses has now garnered a huge wave of fans utilizing it as a handy-dandy mask strap. Both gorgeous and sturdy, the chains come in an array of colors and styles, double as chic necklaces, and introduce ease into our new mandatory accessory. Pretty Connected also sells empowering rings, cell phone cases, and other accessories that you shouldn’t wait to shop. Plus, 15% of all sales are being donated to worthy causes such as the Ahmaud Arbery Fund, No Kid Hungry, and Feeding America. Shop.PrettyConnected.com
SPILTMILK EYEWEAR
Tired of luxury eyewear brands that were too serious and too exclusive, founders Judge Khanna and Saif Ghobash came together to create a brand that evoked humor and included people from all walks of life. Born to help wearers evoke self-confidence and live in the moment, SpiltMilk Eyewear is comprised of showstopping designs and colors that are truly unique. You won’t find other brands with styles like these. Each pair can be adjusted to fit every person like a glove, thanks to the combination of titanium and metal they are handmade with in Japan. Each design is inspired by a different luxurious destination, from Bali to Phi Phi to Aspen. Maybe most playful of all, each pair comes in a matte black milk carton design that you won’t want to wait to open. SpiltMilkEyewear.com 19

TRANS VISIBILITY ON THE RISE By Jonathan Calixto
Photography by James Michael AvanceÂ
22
M
arcia P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, two iconic transwomen in LGBTQ+ history, began a movement in 1969 that would continue for years to come. While there is no exact trace of when the trans rights movement began, what is certain is that the transgender community has always been part of the oppressed but also loud voices advocating for change. While not widely known, some earlier events of transgender visibility in history include the 1966 Compton Cafeteria Riots, in which trans women took a stand against discrimination and police harassment. That was yet another historical mark of the resilience and importance the trans community has symbolized in the movement for equality. Today, one of the modern voices helping push the transgender agenda forward is Miss Peppermint. She is an actress, singer, activist, and has been recognized as the first transgender woman runner-up on the ninth season of VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Before becoming a household name, Peppermint had early beginnings in Hershey, Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware. The limited exposure in those cities would eventually lead her to the Big Apple in hopes of finding, what she calls, “my people.” Indeed, New York City would become an influential part of Peppermint’s personal and professional growth. She attended art college by day, and was brightening up the NYC drag scene by night. This would become Peppermint’s crash course into queerness. “I didn’t realize how poignant that would later prove to be,” she explains. “I was working side by side with legends and trailblazers.” Stardom found its way to Peppermint when she was thrust into the spotlight in 2017 when she was announced as one of the castmates on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Preparing for such an important competition for drag queens was challenging, recalls Peppermint. “Most of the pressure I felt was from wanting to represent trans queens well during the filming of the show.” To her surprise, people were unaccepting of her as a valid trans woman after the show aired because she was doing drag and looked “passable” enough as a woman to them. This conflict is experienced in many industries, and not until recently, June 15, 2020 did the Supreme Court rule that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects employees from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Even with these advancements, Peppermint acknowledges that the trans community has miles to go for equality. “Practically every public or official mention of the word ‘transgender’ by the current administration is related to removing access to
something—besides the never-ending ‘bathroom’ debate. There’s a trans military ban, a recently organized sports ban, and attempts at denial of healthcare for trans people, just to name a few.” Witnessing how trans rights are being targeted, Peppermint recognizes it can be tough, citing that the constant fighting and attacks definitely take a toll. Through this she remains hopeful for the future. “As a woman who is black and trans, I come from a long line of people who endured and fought against racism, sexism, and LGBT-phobia. I consider myself a part of their journey toward equality.” When identifying ways in which allies and members of the community can be active, Peppermint points out the importance of social media. Her advice: “Follow Queer activists, people marching in the streets, and the people fighting in the courts to get policy changed. Accept the notion of intersectionality. I personally believe it is not possible in any way to achieve LGBT equality without also fighting misogyny and racism.” As Peppermint continues to pave a way inspiring members of the LGBTQ+ community, she shares advice once given to her: “One thing that was extremely helpful when I was sorting through the pressure of my transition was hearing from a very wise woman that there is no ‘one way’ to be. There is no ‘finish line.’” This fall, Peppermint’s goal of continuing to share her story in hopes it can help others will be upheld with the release of a new album, “A Girl Like Me: Letter to My Lovers.”

CURIC&CURIC WINNER OF THE INDEPENDENT HANDBAG DESIGNER AWARDS
2020 By Julie Freeman
24
O
nce again, the Independent Handbag Designer Awards (IHDA) saw a lineup of up-and-coming “It bag” designers from all over the world. And this year’s BELLA Audience Fan Favorite bag, the Blue Dahlia, belongs to not one, but two of them: Marija and Ivana Curic, identical twins and the creators behind Curic&Curic.
Sustainability stands at the forefront of Marija and Ivana’s brand, which was founded in 2017. After learning that the fashion industry is a big contributor to world pollution, the pair knew they had to make a change. “Our parents taught us to never waste anything,” says Marija. “We think the future of fashion lies in eco-friendly designs, and hopefully our customers recognize our efforts to stop unnecessary waste.” As a next step, the twin designers plan to add vegan leather to their materials.
Leaving their hometown in Croatia for a post-graduation gap year 14 years ago, the sisters had high hopes for their future. Little did they know, this decision would one day lead to owning a NYC-based fashion brand. Eager to learn from the infamous New York fashion world, the two graduates dove into internships in fashion and PR.
Much like the rest of the Curic&Curic collection, the Blue Dahlia was created with the same core mission in mind. The winning bag is completely handmade from repurposed pairs of old jeans— three different denim washes, braided separately and sewn together over a cardboard-based lining and eco-friendly glue. Besides using fabric waste, the bag was created without the use of electricity, making it a truly sustainable masterpiece.
“Back in 2006, fashion in Croatia was not major,” explains Marija. “We saw an opportunity to learn from the best in NYC. It is tough being a foreigner and starting from zero. It was just the two of us.”
The infinity-braided, 3D denim look is an ode to fashion icon and painter, Frida Kahlo. “She is my forever inspiration,” says Marija, “not only her paintings, but her whole style—including her braids.”
The identical twins grew up knowing they were destined to work together—but not before going their separate ways first. After studying law together in Croatia and moving to New York, Ivana continued to pursue a master’s degree in law, while Marija enrolled in a graduate design program.
While Marija and Ivana complement each other perfectly in their creations, they do not necessarily have the same taste in fashion. Marija loves bohemian-inspired designs with bold colors and eye-popping accessories. Ivana on the other hand, likes to keep her wardrobe minimalistic and classic. Their winning combination is a line of timeless and chic yet colorful statement pieces, best paired with basic staples like a white T-shirt.
It was during her early years as a law student that Marija started to create her own bags handmade of recycled materials. Her love for art and painting followed shortly thereafter. Many years after moving to the U.S., the sisters decided to break into the design business, combining their knowledge and skills. Ivana’s business-oriented, realistic perspective grounds Marija’s artsy, dreamy mindset, making for a perfect business dynamic.
For the Curic sisters, winning the IHDA is a dream come true; after entering the contest in 2016 with no luck, seeing the Blue Dahlia make it to the final round in 2020 was a surreal experience, they say.
Their label, Curic&Curic, offers unique eco-friendly designs, aiming to save the environment by using scraps of fabric and turning them into oneof-a-kind pieces. Customers can send in used vintage denim or leather, and select custom, hand-painted designs for a revamped item. CuricAndCuric
Going forward, the twin duo is focused on merging two passions: creating sustainable fashion while inspiring women of all ages to feel beautiful and unafraid to stand out in a crowd. In the name of female empowerment, Curic&Curic’s ultimate goal is to create an eco-friendly handbag line. The Blue Dahlia is just the beginning. Curic.online 25

“Infashuation” Who Is Your Fashion Icon?
DIXIE LINCOLN-NICHOLS I never thought I could rock a hat until the fabulous Dixie Lincoln-Nichols encouraged me. A fashion + beauty goddess, Dixie can make sweatpants look fashionable. We met via Twitter almost 12 years ago and like fine wine, her style keeps getting more fascinating + is also one to watch as well as aspire to. Dixie’s mix of prints and textures is a genuine reflection of how she lives (big + boldly). I can only hope to fully embrace my inner and outer beauty as graciously as she has. Vanessa Coppes
CEO & Editor-In-Chief
DIANA ROSS Growing up, my nickname was “Diana” because I would spend hours in front of the mirror lipsyncing songs in the most elaborate, flashy outfits I could fashion into a dress from my mom’s closet. I distinctly remember the first moment I laid eyes on Diana Ross...I was just a school-aged little girl standing in front of the TV. I was completely awestruck and mesmerised by Diana’s beauty and talent, but it was her positive light, stunning gowns, and her sassy free spirit that kept me a fan forever and ever. She is the epitome of glamour! To this day, if we are at a party, my parents jokingly ask if I’m going to change costumes throughout the night. Yes, I’m always a little unapologetically overdressed for an event due to Diana Ross’ influence to the point that my childhood friends often write messages on my social media like, “Oh, Diana, you never disappoint!” Janene Mascarella
Beauty Director
CAMILA COELHO I think when talking about style and fashion today, it is important to recognize the industry’s influencers and emerging entrepreneurs. Social media influencers like Camila Coelho are modern day celebrities, doing more than just curating flawless Instagram feeds. The Brazilian businesswoman is not only a fashion, beauty, and lifestyle blogger and YouTube star, she is also the founder of the beauty brand, Elaluz, and the fashion line, Camila Coelho Collection. Her personal style is feminine and chic, highlighting neutral tones with doses of colors and patterns. With more than 11 million followers and subscribers combined, Camila is setting style trends, collaborating with major fashion brands like Revolve, and positively influencing the masses, orchestrating philanthropic efforts in support of the Epilepsy Foundation of America. A true fashionista, Camila has mastered a flawless balance of sexy and sophisticated, and I am always pulling wardrobe and beauty inspiration from her page! Jennifer DeCillis

DIANA ROSS One of our all-time favorite fashion icons is the beautiful and talented Diana Ross. We remember being toddlers and watching her perform on televison. We were instantly mesmerized by her talent, beauty, makeup, and style. She was often adorned in exquisite Bob Mackie gowns, and to this day we are still in awe of that glittery, dramatic 70’s style! We find ourselves trying to emulate those looks because they were true fashion statements. We also love that her talent and beauty has stood the test of time, and she seems to have a wonderful family life as a devoted mom and grandma.

TAN FRANCE While making his debut on Netflix’s “Queer Eye,” Tan France has had over a decade of history in the fashion industry. What I enjoy most about his style is how he is able to take casual pieces and give them an elevated twist, balancing color tones and shape in menswear. I love watching him experiment with various fashion trends by implementing statement pieces like a print shirt or shoe. Another reason he is my current fashion icon is because I love how he is able to use his knowledge of fashion to help others feel great about themselves through clothing. On “Queer Eye,” one of the most notable fashion tips he has given is the “French tuck,” the act of tucking the front of your shirt into your pants while leaving the rest of it out. Hope this helps add some flare to your look!telling stories, and today, I get to do that through my work “behind the scenes.” Jonathan Calixto

KAMIE CRAWFORD Kamie Crawford inspires me on so many levels. She is a journalist, TV host, producer, model, and entrepreneur, and I look up to her for her career and fashion sense. She’s passionate about spreading body positivity and diversity in an industry that’s focused on an “ideal” instead of celebrating beauty of all sizes and colors. Her style is both glamorous and comfy, but really, she can rock anything. Kamie is not afraid to be herself, and it shows—she’s always glowing! That mindset is definitely one we can all learn from. ZENDAYA Zendaya’s fashion, much like her career, continues to inspire me. She’s always had a maturity to her looks that makes you take her seriously. At the same time, she plays around with androgyny and spunkiness, constantly changing up her look, yet somehow managing to keep her style playful and fresh. It’s a toss-up whether I fell in love more with her look attending the Giorgio Armani Privé show for Paris Fashion Week in that feminine tuxedo, or her headturning gown from the 2019 Emmy Awards. I’m in awe of her talent and how she carries herself, and I feel like that is reflected in her personal style. I think she’ll keep heads turning for years to come.
SELENA GOMEZ Growing up I always admired the stylish, sexy, and extremely talented Selena Gomez. From a young age, watching her grow through her acting and singing career, she has always shown how beauty can be displayed both inside and out. Her new beauty brand, Rare Beauty (launches this fall), emphasizes the point that we should all be able to feel comfortable in our own skin. Rare Beauty is aimed to motivate us to be our true selves, and shine from the inside out. Selena is an inspiration to men, women, boys, and girls all around, helping us to feel empowered to express our own definition of beautiful.

MICHAEL PORTER Certain people you meet in life inspire you to be a better version of yourself just by watching them grow and develop over time into an icon. Michael Porter, indie fashion designer in New York City, designs urban wear, wedding gowns, and edgy/provocative couture apparel for such notables as Grammy award-winning producer DJ Dirty Harry, Grammy award-winning rap artist Ludacris, platinum rap artist Juelz Santana, radio host Russ Parr, model Alicia Ann Whitten, radio host Wendy Williams, and former NFL player Steve McNair. Michael debuted his edgy couture collection in his first exclusive fashion show staged in 2010 with a full album performance by Grammy singer Miguel Jontel. That event put Michael Porter’s fashion line, Enerve Fashion On Edge, officially on the map. That is where I met him, photographing my first fashion show. I have admired his hard work and determination ever since that day, and he has become one of my favorite designers and a great friend. Michael’s designs have been featured in several magazines, including Elegant, Le Fil d’Or, Mafia, Sheeba, and BB Magazine. Follow him on Instagram @Original_Enerve_Fashion. Jessica Cirz

VENUS WILLIAMS My latest “Infashuation” is Venus Williams’ new athleisure clothing collection, EleVen. While I’m not a tennis buff, Venus’ Everyday looks are perfectly aligned with my fitness fashion goals. I’ve never been one who was influenced by brands; instead, I look for form and function. Venus’ collection of moveable and breathable fabrics, vibrant colors, and sensible activewear style— with a bit of sass—is a winner in my book. FASHION: a trend, especially in styles of dressing, accessorizing, or manners in which we behave
The Fashion Issue is indeed one of my favorite issues, and as a true shoe addict would, I will pay tribute to my must-haves during this season. While we may have been struggling with how to handle the “Quarantine 15,” shoes—oh, marvelous shoes—they always fit!

Check out some of my favorites below…
THE ANKLE BOOTIE This is my go-to heel during fall/winter because you can dress it up or down. One of my favorite pairs is the York Bootie by Michael Kors. It’s a little splurge that will stand the test of time. MichaelKors
THE SNOW BOOT Yes, I know it’s fall, but with the cards we’ve been dealt this year, you never know! Let’s brace for impact—just in case. Just saying “snow” makes me cringe. Snow boots can be clunky, heavy, and quite frankly, fugly. However, I found a pair that will not only keep your feet warm, but will also up your fashion game. I get so many compliments when I wear these Mata Women’s Fur Lace-Up Waterproof Winter Boots. Mata_Shoes_

THE RIDING BOOT …the camel riding boot, to be exact. This is one of the best shoe investments you will ever make. Riding boots are always on trend, and this color goes with everything. They will carry you through fall, winter, and spring. My favorite ones are by Coach. I’ve owned the same pair for about 10 years, and they’ve only gotten more comfortable and the worn leather more beautiful with time. Coach

SNEAKERS Who would’ve thunk it? Sneakers are actually cool enough to wear everywhere + anytime. It’s been fascinating to see how this trend has stuck, because well— comfort. Especially since not much is happening in our social scenes, sneakers are always a great choice to complete any look. Personally, I think a classic pair of white Jordans is the way to go. You simply cannot go wrong! So, just do it! Nike
UGG SLIPPERS Never in a million years would I have thought I’d be longing for a pair of Uggs! Their look was never appealing—until I tried on a pair. Since comfort wear is all the rage, you’ll be reaching for your Uggs if just to move from your bedroom to your living room. Ugg

Flaunt Body’s Guide to
SMOOTH SHAVING MOVES By Cameron Alexis Moore and Tiffany Tramaine
I
f you prefer a hairless body aesthetic, you'll likely perform some means of hair removal at least once a week. One of the most cost-effective and easiest ways to do away with body hair is to shave it off, but before you grab a razor and go to town, we recommend following these five shaving tips to help the process go smoothly:
While skin is still wet, apply a lubricant: shaving cream, gel, or oil based on your skin's preference. A shaving lubricant has two functions that prove it's a step not to dismiss, even in a time crunch. It lubricates the cutting action, providing a protective barrier between the blade and the skin, and it acts as a guide to avoid missed areas. We recommend shaving creams or gels with active ingredients like aloe vera or another soothing agent for protection against razor burn.
1
TIP: Use conditioner as a replacement for shaving cream in a pinch rather than soap, which can be drying.
PREP
Before each shave, commit to some light prep work for a more fabulous shave. Whether using a safety razor or a disposable five-blade razor, ensure blades are sharp and hygienic. Sitting in your shower, razors can pick up a lot of bacteria; clean with alcohol or a disinfectant before each use. Replace disposable razors after three uses, and keep the plastic cover on your razor when not in use. Assess if body parts with coarser hair—longer than a manicured nail—require a trim. Trimming longer hair helps the razor glide smoothly and avoids clogging the razor, hindering a close shave.
4
GO TIME
We've heard it before: Shave in the direction of hair growth. But honestly, who sticks to that rule? Most of us hop in the tub or shower and shave in an upward direction. That works well for those who don't have sensitive skin. For those who do, we recommend sticking to the sage advice of shaving downward.
2
EXFOLIATE
We recommend showering before shaving, not after, to give your skin more time to soften. After showering, exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and smooth any bumps. No body scrub on hand? Use a muslin washcloth or a body sponge for physical exfoliation. Using a dry brush before showering provides great exfoliation, too. Scrubbing too aggressively with a physical exfoliant can damage the skin, so take care and rub in a gentle, circular motion. Try Luv Scrub Mesh Body Exfoliator or Public Goods Ayate Washcloth.
CAMERON ALEXIS MOORE is the founder of Flaunt Body, makers of the award-winning Ingrown Hair Mask.
TIFFANY TRAMAINE is Flaunt Body’s consulting esthetician, skin care pro, and owner of a wax and skincare studio in Houston, Texas. 56
3
LATHER
While going against the grain provides the closest shave, it is more likely to cause irritation and razor bumps after a shave. When shaving against the direction of growth, the blade bends the hair back against itself. This tears the hair at the root as it bends back on itself. Bacteria can then rush into this micro-tear, causing redness, irritation, and bumps. Shaving downward with the direction of hair growth avoids this. TIP: Opt for short strokes versus long strokes, especially when working on tight and awkward areas like the knees.
5
THE PAYOFF
Now that your skin is smooth and fresh, don't forget to seal and protect your freshly shaven skin—we recommend Flaunt Body Ingrown Hair Mask for a one-anddone solution to soothe, restore, and moisturize freshly shaven bits.

HONEY, HONEY Our Beauty Director Janene Mascarella shares the buzzy beauty ingredient she’s sweet on.
E
ver since grade school, I’ve been mixing up all kinds of beauty concoctions (homemade hair and face masks, acne treatments, face and body scrubs) using honey as the main ingredient. And that was long before I even knew of all the powerful and bonafide benefits. Turns out, I was on to something! “Honey is super effective in helping the skin heal itself and prevent further irritation and infection,” says Charlene Valledor, president of SOS Beauty. “It is rich in amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, and minerals, and acts as a natural anti-microbial, antiinflammatory, and humectant for the skin and hair. Just like any natural product, the attributes can vary depending on the source, so you definitely want to make sure that you’re using a high-quality product in order to get the best result.” My personal favorite is Manuka honey, a monofloral honey produced from nectar of the New Zealand native mānuka tree. It’s no wonder this “liquid gold” is a buzzing trend in skincare. This premium honey is widely known for its anti-bacterial properties thanks to the key compounds found in UMFverified Manuka honey.

TOurhe signature program, “This is it with Cheldin,” is a daily digital talk show that airs Monday through Friday and showcases industry leaders and innovative entrepreneurs.

In addition to our online content, we offer our audience extensions of our SCREAM YOUR DREAM philosophy. We provide online personal development courses, as well as an exclusive SCREAM YOUR DREAM membership community. WHY I LAUNCHED IT: In 2009, I created a digital agency (i-g creative) here in Philadelphia,
Photography by Ricky Codio Photography
Pennsylvania, that aided small business owners—primarily women—with social media campaigns, publicity, graphic design, and web development. In early 2013, I was conducting mock publicity interviews with one of my most shy clients. She was extremely nervous about going on a local morning show, and I was committed to helping her find her voice. Oftentimes the most talented people have the hardest time sharing their stories and therefore promoting their businesses. I have always been an extrovert, so speaking in public with confidence has always come easy to me. Watching my talented client struggle and frankly “whisper” about her passion and therefore business sparked an idea that soon would become my mission: SCREAM YOUR DREAM. At that moment, I determined that my life’s goal would be to help talented professionals no longer whisper their wishes but to SCREAM THEIR DREAMS! On that day, THIS IS IT TV was born. I began producing my daily digital talk show that provides small business owners, industry leaders, and brand influencers with a fun online platform to “comfortably” promote their businesses, products, and services while sharing lifestyle news and celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit.
MOST REWARDING: I am honored each and every day to assist and encourage countless
professionals by providing an opportunity and platforms for them to share and promote their businesses, organizations, and goals with our digital online community.
SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: I have a uniquely positive and welcoming energy
that is paired with my willingness to truly listen to my guests and community members. I encourage in-depth conversations vs. cold interviews. I ensure that each guest feels at ease and confident while we chat about what drives and motivates them personally and professionally. As a seasoned storyteller, I use my experience to aid them in understanding the importance of their own voices when sharing their unique journeys with the world. FASHION PHILOSOPHY: MIX AND MATCH…I
think there is something fun and playful with mixing luxury brands with fast fashion. At any given time you can find me carrying my favorite Louis Vutton tote paired with my $19.99 Target shift dress. My style is a true reflection of my life—a little luxury accompanied by day-to-day accessibility. 59

JADE
McFadden
Texarkana, Texas CEO & DESIGNER, JM | JADE MCFADDEN (JADE MCFADDEN & CO.) JadeMcFadden.com MY BUSINESS: The Jade McFadden brand is a very
unique fashion and lifestyle brand. We design and sell highquality clothing, shoes, bags, home decor, and various lifestyle products for women, men, and kids at reasonable prices. We call it “Affordable Luxury.” We’ve recently expanded our brand by adding brand new categories, including beauty, grooming, and personal care products. It is very rare for a woman’s brand to be named solely after herself, to design for both women and men, and to receive the same amount of respect. It is a lot of work and we are a very small team, but, I, along with my business partner/COO, will continue in making history and breaking records! We want men to feel just as confident in buying and wearing our clothing, shoes, and other products as women and kids. After years of styling and freelance designing, I’m so thankful to have finally turned my childhood dreams into reality. WHY I LAUNCHED IT: My business partner and I started
this brand in May of 2018, but we actually did not launch it until November of 2018. I’ve literally loved fashion since I was a kid, and I knew I would one day become a fashion designer. I wanted to create my own lane in this industry by creating a unique brand that is diverse. MOST REWARDING: The freedom to do what I love! SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: I personally think I have a long way to go in terms of success. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve most definitely accomplished a lot and I am very, very proud and blessed, but I never want to get too comfortable, so I’m always striving for better. I am a very ambitious person! I think that as long as I continue to keep God first, work hard, and remain humble, this brand will truly become successful in many ways and inspire others to never give up on their dreams.

FASHION PHILOSOPHY: My style is a combination of my late parents’ style, who were both such inspirations to me, and my own personal style. I wanted the designs and products to reflect the same. The aesthetic of this brand is very clean and classic, yet bold and unique. Hence, “VintageInspiration, Mod-Liberation.”

Atlanta, Georgia FOUNDER, POSHGLAM.COM POSHGLAM.com, dauntLLC.com
MY BUSINESS: A fashion media online platform for quickly
connecting the fashion community. WHY I LAUNCHED IT: I started a business as a kid and finally
named it POSHGLAM while I was in college in 2005. I was studying the consolidation of the Euro and new trends in word-ofmouth marketing, as well as ecommerce and online news. As the web began to take shape as a source of news and factual info, my small team of ambitious hopefuls started the site. The energy of the young designers helped spur our excitement to keep the platform fresh, witty, and innovative. MOST REWARDING: The people I meet, fresh ideas, new
friends, lots of opportunities for innovation, and the fun feeling of being ‘tapped in.’ POSHGLAM definitely blazed a trail, and it’s fun to see how the web has changed with the most up-to-date info in the search engines thanks to experts and contributors around the world. We all shape the web—to be one the people that contributes is unmatched. It gives one a true sense of purpose paired with the benefits of giving back. My charity Chat for Charity is the non-profit arm of my holding company daunt and POSHGLAM.
SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: Staying optimistic and using my acting skills to always “Find my up.” Part of the reason I started POSHGLAM was to have something I could do in between talent gigs. It’s served its purpose and has brought many blessings and a renewed perspective. FASHION PHILOSOPHY: I think these days we all have
fashion moods: ‘utilitarian, glamorous, luxe posh, random, conversational, polished, and boss.’ Influencers like Tommy Ton have changed what we think of as styled: ‘old, new, and something you. ‘ I thought of something very funny recently…5 year olds having a preference. Whether it’s a purple Halloween costume they want to put on every day to do homework, the way they want their hair for school, or spaghetti with butter every night for dinner. The feeling we get from making a choice and the benefits that come with it are very natural, human, and what drives our emotions and outlook from a very young age. Retail therapy was finally proven, and we can all benefit from suggestions, implementation, personalization, and style. Ecommerce is on the rise, shopping is becoming uber agile, and POSHGLAM is happy to be a part of the evolution.

MY BUSINESS: Nue is a line of body- and shade-inclusive breast tapes that work
as an alternative for a bra. We call it a “boob job in a box” because it gives you a lift and support under backless and strapless styles (even bathing suits) without straps, clasps, or cups. We love your body the way it is, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel better in difficult-to-wear styles. Plus, a percentage of every purchase is donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. WHY I LAUNCHED IT: I’ve never had perky boobs, and not being able to go
braless was so limiting. After trying the duct tape hack (I don’t recommend it, by the way!), I knew there had to be a better option. Nue is hypoallergenic, latex-free, easy to remove, and has plenty of stretch for all-day comfort. Now, I can finally wear plunging necklines, strapless, and backless styles! MOST REWARDING: I was laid off from my dream job two years (almost to
the date) of Nue’s launch. I wanted to create something that was mine, something I could be proud of, and something that proved I could be in charge of my own destiny. Running a business is such hard work, but taking pride in every aspect of its growth is so rewarding. SECRET TO MY SUCCESS: The fashion and beauty industry is packed with
such inspirational entrepreneurial women, and I’ve always aspired to join the ranks. However, in such a saturated market, I never wanted to slap my name on something that already existed. I knew if I put my name on it, my savings behind it, and all my energy into it, my product would have to be innovative and speak to women of all shapes, shades, and backgrounds. I never wanted to launch a product just for the sake of launching a product. The breast tape space is growing, but I believe being a pioneer in the category and catering to women of all skin tones has set Nue up for success. And if I can help someone along the journey with our contribution to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, that’s a success in my eyes.

STUCK WITH HOME DESIGN? STEP INTO YOUR
Closet By Holly Volpe

Have you ever been stumped on where to start when it comes to revamping, redesigning, or refreshing a room? You’re starting out with a blank canvas and you are so unsure as to what you want. You have no clue about color scheme—do you want a pattern, or would your rather simplify your space? Do you want the room to feel edgy or different to what your style might be? There are just too many options… it’s no wonder you feel like you’ve hit a wall before you even get started! Well, the answer might be hanging in your closet. It’s been my experience that if you go into your bedroom, look in your closet, and explore your wardrobe, your ideal design style is waiting right there. Try looking at your favorite go-to outfit, a pair of shoes you wear on the regular, or a piece of jewelry you never take off. You are naturally drawn to a particular color palette, and your favorite item of clothing tends to hold the key to what color you would lean toward when it comes to making design decisions. 68

Find yourself wearing a lot of white and beige? Opt for a neutral color palette. A timeless palette, neutrals never go out of style. Pick a gray paint like Sherwin Williams Uncertain Gray if you’re after something cooler, or Useful Gray, which leans more toward a beige palette. If you wear one other color every now and then, use that color to weave through your design. Add throw pillows, window treatments, or accessories in that shade.

If you lean toward clothes that have patterns and lots of different colors, you might find yourself back to square one and at a loss for choice. Worry not! Try a few different color combinations based on the colors in one particular garment. Refer to the color wheel and choose colors next to one another if you’re after a subtle look. Or if you wish to experiment, try colors at opposite ends of the color wheel that complement each other like blue and orange. But be careful that you select shades that work together so you don’t find your palette clashing.

If you wear a lot of When it comes to designing a room using a black color palette, you’re going to need to add something to make it pop. If you love the black staples in your closet, perhaps there’s a patterned bag that makes you feel good when you wear it—you could start with that. Pull other colors in through artwork or bold accessories. Break up the color by adding in design aspects like white trim around doors or windows, crown molding, or built-ins in a different shade. Glam things up with metallic—a gold coffee table will really add a hint of mystique! Not wanting to commit fully to the color black? Try going for a very dark shade of gray paint like Benjamin Moore’s Cheating Heart or Sherwin William’s Black Fox. Learn more about Holly Volpe Interior Designs at HollyVolpeInteriorDesign.com. 70

H
is image has been everywhere. From billboards and magazine covers, to the big and small screen, there isn’t a place where you haven’t seen Tyson Beckford. Best known for his work with fashion giant Ralph Lauren, the legendary model, actor, and entrepreneur is one of the most successful male supermodels, having achieved the fame and notoriety similar to the female supermodels of his time. First discovered in 1991, Tyson’s life and career changed a year later when he became the face of the Ralph Lauren Polo line. What makes his story even more interesting is he never envisioned himself as a model. His goal was to become an actor. “I didn’t plan for it, it just fell into my lap,” says the star. “I was good at taking pictures and people just kept giving out my number, referring me for work.” Despite thinking his modeling career wouldn’t last long, it did, opening up even more doors, which eventually led to projects in TV and film. “I was always on my path, I just veered off of it to take a couple pictures,” he says jokingly. These days, Tyson has turned his creative focus toward his entrepreneurial projects, as well as stepping behind the camera as a writer and producer. In addition to his eponymous sunglass line, which launched last September, he recently launched cologne, Orion Skye, along with a hand sanitizer line. For a man who has had an amazing career to date, Tyson is by no means finished. As humble as he is handsome, the mega star is dedicated to continuing to build his legacy. He opened up to BELLA about his longstanding career, the work he’s doing now, and also shed light on the ways in which he continues to remain inspired.
Some fans may not know this, but you grew with a passion for music along with a desire to act. Did you always have a love for the arts?
I am very drawn to the creative; I used to draw and sketch. I would sit there with my drawing book and go into another world. I miss it and would love to get back to drawing—even meditating— because for me they’re both stimulating. Right now we all should be doing the things that stimulate us, not stress us. When I was young we took school trips to the museum and I enjoyed going while the other kids didn’t. My permission slip was always signed— anything to get us kids out and doing things. Back then we didn’t come straight home from school, we participated in afterschool programs.
Were you bullied as a child as a result?
I was bullied and picked on, but I was strong. Plus, my brother would come out and tell me that if I Iost, he was going to beat me up, and I didn’t want that. I was always teased about my Chinese heritage; growing up there weren’t too many Asian mixed Black kids, and they used to go to town on me. But I learned to have a tough skin, and once my mom dropped me off at martial arts, it was over.
Was building that tough skin helpful when you began working in a business full of rejection?
“
I am very drawn to the
Yes, it was. I remember heading out on go-sees and having the person behind the desk not even look at my book. I had some choice words for them and then it turned into me becoming the bad boy of fashion; I didn’t take shit from anyone. Before we had the “Me Too” movement, I had people in the industry try inappropriate things, but I let them know I was from the Bronx and not having any of it. I was there for business only, nothing else.
You have a son who is also following in your creative footsteps. How did he develop his passion for music?
I was playing everything from Miles Davis to James Brown to Eric B. and Rakim. His mom grew up with the sounds of Janis Joplin and Cole Train, plus we both are big Guns N Roses fans, so he was around music from both ends. His grandfather also taught him how to play the guitar, and he’s self-taught on a lot of the instruments he plays. I can play the drums a little but that’s pretty much the only instrument I can play. He’s been around a studio since he was 11 years old. For us, we know this boy is going to be a musical genius when he’s ready.
creative...”
75
cover story He also produced the music for your new cologne, Orion Skye. How did the opportunity come about?
We had a few days to get it together so I sent him the video, he asked me the vibe, and came back with three tracks. Out of those three I was able to pick the one, and when I told him what I picked, he said it was the same one he wanted to choose. We are really on the same wavelength. Even if he and I don’t speak for a week or so, me, him, and his mother are all on the same vibe. He definitely has both our blood in his veins.
Was this the first time you worked together?
No, we had done a shoot for Chinese GQ together, and now he’s going to be scoring the music for my next production, a scripted TV series called “Throttle.” It really is amazing being able to collaborate with him.
You’ve been the face of many brands and now you have your own. Were you involved in creating the scent for this new cologne?
I was involved from start to finish. I was asked what some of my favorite colognes were and I sent over a list of what I liked such as Ralph Lauren Polo, Tom Ford, and Bvlgari. From there we came up with a scent that was amazing. Suggestions were made for the name, but when they mentioned this one, it stuck with me. I have always been into space and astrology, so when I heard it, it was instantaneous.
You’ve spent more than half of your life in front of the camera, now you’re stepping behind it. What encouraged you to do so? Being on set, and watching and learning from others has been such an inspiration. I’m more driven to be a producer than an actor, and coming up with this scripted TV series has been an amazing journey.
Can you tell us more about the series?
“Throttle” is sort of like “Miami Vice” meets “Fast & Furious.” My partner and I, Steve Hawthorne, created the concept and teamed up with a writer, Adam Targum, who’s written for “Banshee” and other action-adventure shows. I was a fan, and once we clicked, we knew we were going to create something amazing together. Creating the characters was intriguing, and I pulled a lot of stuff from my own life. In talking to friends, I’ve heard all sorts of stories, and some of these guys I brought in to help out with scenes. So some of the stories are true, just the names have been changed. Right now we are shopping the series, which is something I’ve never done before. I’ve written five scripts, but this is the furthest I’ve gotten.
In a few short months you’ll be celebrating a milestone birthday; how do you stay young at heart? By taking good care of myself. I work out, focus on my health, and I put in the work. The way you grow is from the inside out, not the other way around.
Fifteen years ago you were involved in a bad car crash and it had a profound affect on your spirituality. How did the accident change the direction of your life?
It was almost like a rebirth. I realized how important the things were that I took for granted. I could have died that day and left my son fatherless, and I can’t imagine what my mom would have gone through if she lost me. I told myself I have to be more careful in life, not take so much risk. I love fast cars and fast bikes, but I need to remember I’m not immortal. TysonCBeckford 76

SPEAKING HER TRUTH BY ALEXANDRA ANASTASIO PHOTOGRAPHY BY NEIL DAWSON
79
up close & personal
In your new memoir, “I Am These Truths,” you talk about the importance of education in your home starting at a young age. Would you say your passion for helping others comes from having a strong support system?
rom her days as a child growing up in the South Bronx and New York City, attorney-turned-journalist Sunny Hostin has parlayed her wealth of knowledge of the legal system into another successful career. While she began her journey as a federal prosecutor, Sunny’s early childhood passion for telling stories eventually came to fruition, and what was once just a “fanciful thought” became reality. “I wanted to be a writer and a broadcast journalist,” says Sunny. “I’d watch ‘60 Minutes’ with my parents and practice telling stories in the mirror with a hairbrush.”
If I could make it from the South Bronx projects onto “The View” stage, interviewing every presidential candidate, anyone can, but they need to see it’s possible. I had the imagination and the support, but not everyone has that. Education, plus opportunity, plus support is a winning combination; you just have to know it’s possible.
Besides your parents, who else was influential in your journey?
Someone once told me that every decision made about your life is made when you aren’t in the room. You must have a champion in that room that is willing to spend his or her power on you. I’ve had those champions throughout my life who were willing to expend their political power on me, and that’s really a blessing. I try to be that champion for others AM THESE TRUTHS because I now have a seat at the table, now I’m in the room.
SUNNY HOSTIN
At that time, Sunny says there weren’t many role models that resembled her on TV, and it was scary for her parents, who risked it all to make sure their only child was super educated, to suddenly go off and vie for a TV career. “A non-traditional career scared my mom; she felt a lawyer or a doctor were the safe careers that would ensure financial stability.” Today, the four-time Emmy Award winner and co-host of “The View” remains dedicated to advocating for marginalized communities and giving a voice to the voiceless. As a champion for the people, she’s proven that anything is possible. In her new memoir, Sunny shares some of the most intimate details of her life. Recently, she sat down with BELLA for an in-depth conversation about her life, her work, and her commitment to helping others.
80
Not everyone has that type of home environment, and those that do have really supportive parents, or even one parent who may be working and doing everything they can, and that child might not see anyone out there who looks like them. They don’t have what I like to call a “possibility model.”
I
You share many personal stories in your book. What made you decide to open up your life in such a public way?
A M E M O I R O F I D E N T I T Y, JUSTICE, AND
If you’re going to write about your life you have to share the good, the bad, and the ugly. You must be authentic. I think this was the right time for the book to come out because of what our country is going through. I was encouraged by my book agent, Ryan, who I met years ago in a writing class.
L I V I N G B E T W E E N WO R L D S
Also, in speaking to Justice Sotomayor, I was told a story I should share. I felt that we are similar—we’re both lawyers and we’re both Latinas from the South Bronx. She pointed out the importance of having a platform, [and] of being a journalist having little Black and Latino children watch you, and how powerful that is. And then she implored me to not only have the book in English but in Spanish as well.
You talk candidly about your journey with IVF and the struggles you faced in becoming a mother. Was it difficult reliving this part of your life?
That was the hardest chapter to write; I was reliving every second of it. When I recorded the audio book I was sobbing—happy tears—because I have two great kids, but it was such a painful time in my life although worth every bit of it. My kids didn’t know they were IVF babies, and it was something I had to talk to them about. They were kind of shocked and intrigued by it and were so thankful we wanted them that badly.

81
up close & personal A recurring thread throughout your life has been the question of, “What are you?” Do you still deal with the question today?
Yes! Because I am mixed race, I’m constantly subjected to ‘Which box do I check?’ If I speak to a guest in Spanish, viewers are asking if I’m Hispanic today, even using the wrong terminology, or they’ll say, Sunny’s Black today—which one is it? The answer is both, every single day of my life. People have a hard time with race in this country, and I don’t think it’s going away anytime soon, but I’m happy the conversation at least continues.
Along with writing your memoir, you’ve also written a novel. What prompted you to write a fiction book?
You know firsthand how it feels to be a victim, and through your work, you help others to understand what that’s like. Would you say through projects like “Truth About Murder (with Sunny Hostin),” the docuseries you cohosted and executive produced last year, you’ve been successful in doing so?
I hear it all the time, and it still surprises me when someone says his or her life has changed as a result of something I’ve done or said. I know I’m in the right place, making a difference, and that’s important to me. One of the things I’m interested in is all of these cases we’re seeing like Breonna Taylor or Ahmaud Arbery. No one has been arrested or held accountable, and these victims are dead and their families want justice. It’s powerful to tell these stories, and I want to continue to do these kinds of things.
Since 2016 you’ve been a co-host on “The View”, which is now in its 24th season; what do you think makes it such a success?
Barbara Walters had this idea to get a group of women around a table to do what we all do with our friends, talking and sharing a difference of opinions. What the twist is, you have women that come from different places in their lives, different decades, different viewpoints, talking about things most people generally don’t talk about. And we do—nothing is off the table. We do it every single day and are able to do it in a way where we can come back to the table as colleagues.
I used to travel a lot when I was with the justice department, and even with "The View," pre-pandemic, I was in and out of airports. I love to read and would find myself looking for a beach read but couldn’t find one, especially one based in the African American community. My girlfriends told me summer reads were over, and I thought, I go to places like Martha’s Vineyards, Sag Harbor, Highpoint, and there’s this hip African American Huxtable theme no writes about, maybe I should. So I started writing, I pitched the idea, and I got a three-book deal with Harper Collins. Each summer a new book comes out, beginning next year.
Is there anything you haven’t done yet that you would like to do?
I want to create more; producing is a goal of mine. I’d like to see my books become a series, and I’m working to make that happen. I also think it’s very important to be a part of the political process. I just don’t know yet what that looks like for me.
Tell us about the first book, “Summer on the Bluffs.”
Oak Bluffs, which is on Martha’s Vineyard, is one of the few places in America where Black people were allowed to buy beachfront property. In the book we have a heroine—a fairy godmother who has these three goddaughters she’s mothered their entire lives. She’s a different type of mother, which was important to me to explore. One of them will inherit her home, and along the way there are twists and turns with the culmination of only one of the girls getting the house.
What advice do you have for others following a similar path? First, that anything is possible. Also, when you’re in a place in your life when you can help someone, there’s nothing more important because you cannot really live a perfect day without doing something for someone who can’t repay you. When you have the opportunity to be the champion in the room, you must do it with great rigor.
Have you conceptualized the next two books?
The next book is called, “Summer on Sag,” and the third one is, “Summer on High Point,” another two areas in the Hamptons where Black people were allowed to buy beachfront property.

Sand from the beach on your honeymoon or shells from the shore of your hometown are just a few examples of elements that can be transformed into these picturesque pieces. Having cultivated the world’s largest sandbank over the past decade, Dune offers over 4,000 samples of elements from beaches, sports venues, trails, mountaintops, historical locations, and iconic events around the globe. Spending years crafting jewelry for friends and family, Holly quickly recognized the uniquely personal nature and popularity of her work. Through good old-fashioned bootstrapping and self-starting, Holly soon turned her dream into a thriving business, which began at her very own kitchen table. Over the past 10 years, Dune has partnered with some of the biggest names in the modeling and entertainment world, hosted star-studded events, and joined forces with various philanthropic organizations to give back in important ways. Celebrating a 10year anniversary of success and hope for the future of her business, there is no one more deserving than this genuinely sensational entrepreneur. 86
Holly, first off, congratulations on 10 successful years! It feels like you are family now at BELLA, and we have loved watching your journey. How does it feel to be celebrating such a huge milestone?
Thank you so much. It’s true, we are family now! I truly cannot believe it’s been 10 years since I started Dune from my kitchen table. I have to say, it feels really good to be celebrating this milestone. I’m so lucky to have partners like BELLA, plus a team of amazing professionals that have been by my side since day one. The past 10 years have been the greatest adventure of my life with so many ups and downs and challenges, but I can tell you with confidence that I’m ready to take on the next 10 with just as much drive and passion.
Take us back to the beginning. When you set out with Dune Jewelry, is this where you envisioned yourself and the brand in 10 years?
This is an interesting question. I’m such an entrepreneurial spirit, so while I’m very good at planning for success in the short-term, I actively change my long-term dreams and goals as new ideas come to me. When I first started Dune Jewelry, we were The Original Beach Sand Jewelry Company®, and over the years we’ve evolved into the one and only experiential jewelry brand in the world. What that means is that we create jewelry and accessories filled with sand and natural elements from thousands of memorable and iconic locations around the world. We live in such a digital world, and our mission is to create and provide our customers with a truly tangible reminder of their favorite moments in life. We capture experiences in every single design that leaves our studio. So to answer your question, I don’t know if I saw this exact evolution, but I did see myself leading a successful, innovative lifestyle brand with bootstrap financing and an organic growth model.

As of late, there have obviously been hurdles that many small businesses have had to face and overcome. What is some advice you would give to other small business owners?
As a business owner, remember this: If you can keep your business afloat through an unprecedented global pandemic and make changes that ensure your business’ survival, you can make it through anything! Think about it—this is the hardest it’s ever going to be, so stay positive, make difficult decisions that will benefit your business in the long run, and keep going! I truly believe that we’ll be stronger leaders having gone through this situation. Personally, it’s given me clarity about who I want on my team for the long haul, and even more importantly, who I don’t need on my team to make things work. There are silver linings everywhere if you look hard enough.
The meaning and sentiments behind Dune Jewelry are truly touching. (I, myself, have pieces that mean so much to me on such a personal level.) Could you share one of the favorite stories you’ve encountered or pieces you’ve created?
There are so many extraordinary stories that have been shared with me over the years, it’s hard to just choose one. We’ve used sand from wedding ceremonies, flowers from funerals, crushed granite from the Rocky Mountains where a customer was proposed to, grass from golf courses where a customer scored his first hole-in-one, soil from the Appalachian Trail, infield sand from Fenway Park (and don’t worry—we also have bricks from the old Yankee Stadium for you Yankee fans!). It’s really hard to narrow it down to just one story because our Sandbank now holds thousands of memories from around the globe.
88
You have worked with supermodels, celebrities, and charitable organizations alike on beautiful collaborations. Are there any special projects or new collaborations in the works that you can share?
I love this question because we always have something new and exciting on the horizon. First and foremost, we’re coming out with an experiential candle collection that’s launching in late September. I’m so excited about the fragrances we came up, with including Cape Cod, Hawaii, the Amalfi Coast, the Outer Banks, Bermuda, and more. These candles are going to transport you to your favorite place without even leaving your living room. We also have a stunning new moonstone collection being designed by Camille Kostek and Laura Conte for Dune Jewelry that is going to be pivotal in our growth as a brand. The BELLA community is going to love these designs, and I can’t wait to share them with you all.
Photography by Rachael, CEO of PARLR Brand Studio
Finally, where do you hope to see yourself and Dune in another 10 years?
If the next 10 years can be as fulfilling as the last 10 years, I’ll consider myself lucky. For me, it’s about that journey, not the destination...oh, and of course we’ll be a household name by then! :)

Evvie
McKinney is Bringing the Whole Hood By Ruta Fox and Vanessa Coppes Photography courtesy of Motown Gospel/Capitol CMG
ust 23 years old, Evvie McKinney and her catchy, jubilant single, “Bring the Whole Hood,” supplies a much-needed shot of positivity to the current music scene. The Motown Gospel singer/songwriter has a unique blend of spirit, style, and soul, influenced by the fabled Memphis music scene where she grew up. With pop icon Meghan Trainor as her co-writer on the track and a funky, cool look, Evvie is the perfect artist for these times. BELLA talked to her about her music and her upbeat message. How did you get your start in the industry?
I’ve been traveling the world with different bands and choirs for a very long time. Since I was a freshman in high school, I’ve been touring as a performer, which is a huge blessing.
What is your favorite part about your career? What is the best part of your job?
As a singer and performer, I’m truly working in my gift. The absolute best part of this job is that I get to meet new people. From fans to those on my team, I’m meeting and interacting with people I can learn something from and they can also learn something from me. I love that when people listen to my music they’ll hopefully be moved by my testimony.
What is the best advice you ever received?
As a finalist on FOX’s “The Four,” right before the finale I asked Diddy for words of wisdom. He told me “don’t get comfortable,” and to this day I take that piece of advice with me everywhere I go. In this life you can’t get comfortable; you need to use everything that makes you uncomfortable to take you to the next level.
What’s the biggest misconception people have about what you do?
As artists, people tend to think we have everything together and our lives are so perfect, but we go through trials just like anybody else. I love being able to listen to artists like Donnie McClurkin and Tasha Cobbs, who are so vocal about their trials, because I think it helps people to understand that if superstars can get through it, I can too.
What has been the inspiration behind your music? Where I’ve been, where I’m at, and where I’m going. Everything I’ve experienced and want to experience I write about; there have definitely been some prayers in my songs, like my newest single, “Just Like God.”
What do you hope your work accomplishes throughout your lifetime?
I hope people from all walks of life and nations can be inspired and motivated when they listen to music. I want them to know that they can follow their dreams. I want younger children to be able to look on their TV or listen to their radio and be uplifted and encouraged to share their journey and story just like I’m telling mine.
In a few words, describe what “Life is BELLA means to you.
Life is full of love; there is nothing we have to fear or be scared of because life is in our Creator’s hands.

A
BELLA
Future LIES AHEAD… By Vanessa Coppes
92
rom the time I picked up my first magazine, I remember diving into horoscopes and being fascinated by what my life could potentially look like—if I just listened to the astrology gods. But growing up Catholic, astrology was frowned upon. It wasn’t until I started watching TV astrologer Walter Mercado religiously that I begun to take the advice with a grain of salt. Instead, I decided I would consider these spiritual nuggets of wisdom, because for Walter, his readings came from God and were rooted in love. I rolled with that! After watching the Netflix documentary on him, I met with the BELLA team to see how we felt about integrating horoscopes into the issue. It was a resounding YES (more like YAAASSS!). So here we are—our first edition of BELLA Horoscopes, a forecast for the remaining part of 2020 with some info as adapted from Yearly-Horoscope.org/2020horoscopes. According to the site, 2020 will be a year when all the zodiac signs will be able to take advantage of a new beginning, both in their personal lives and financially. With the year we’ve had thus far, I think we could all get on board with that! While some of us will focus on fun, amusement, pleasure, and hobbies, others will use their creativity, ambition, and confidence to begin personal and/or more extensive projects.
ARIES
This year will end as one full of personal and professional success. You’ll find yourself being more active and goaloriented. Any residual feelings of being mired down and stuck will clear quickly. You will experience an increase in pure energy. You can expect the opportunity to create something new and wonderful. Would you like to launch a small business, organize an event, or succeed in a competition? Perhaps you would like to write a book? All these things are possible and easier to achieve than ever!
LIBRA
Personal growth and inner understanding will make powerful changes in your life. Focus more on your desires and beautiful hobbies. With a new vision about things and life in general, 2020 is the year of relationships for Libras. And when we say relationships, we refer to all kinds of relationships: professional, friendship, family, love, amity, collaboration, etc.
TAURUS
This time period will be a building year for you. Where you apply your efforts, they will bring solid and visible effects into your life. Taurus people are typically very rational. In every second of life, you will focus on working hard to obtain the desired well-being and standard of living you desire.
SCORPIO
There will be major growth for the remainder of the year. Much of what you reap in the way of rewards comes from efforts made in the past. Scorpios will achieve wonderful things if this is what they desire. Chances of enrichment will occur from somewhere they never thought possible.
GEMINI
You will soon be coming into a solid building period of your life. Use the remaining influence to dig into what you really hope to accomplish. Pay attention to learning how to bring your deepest inner dreams into a solid and viable source outside yourself.
SAGITTARIUS
It appears you have had many changes in your life. You get a chance to rework both how you present yourself to the world, as well as what you present to the world. This year will end with prosperity, fortune, and success. You will find happiness in small things, and you will come to understand how little you require to feel like the luckiest people on earth.
CANCER
You will be quite lucky in 2020. Even though they don’t generally believe in luck, and money and fortune are not that important for Cancer, 2020 will be a prosperous period. It is a time when Cancers should read, write, sign up for newspapers and magazines, learn to drive, study a foreign language, start a class about something that attracts them, or make a study trip. The efforts made in these directions will be great because it refers to some habits that need to be changed, whether it is about work delegation, changing the workplace for greater satisfaction, or taking care of physical, emotional, and mental health.
CAPRICORN You have put your mind into full focus and created the world in which you have longed to live. The remaining part of this year will be extraordinary in all the aspects of lives. Keep watch for a year-end full of material and emotional well-being.
LEO
The stars and the chances seem to keep smiling in 2020. The warning, however, is real because they tend to exaggerate with regard to money and spending. No matter how favorable this perspective seems, it is recommended you act cautiously, levelheaded, and without haste.
AQUARIUS
With all the energy in your sign, the rest of the year promises to be more energized. This year is a year of changes for the better. You will find peace, harmony, and happiness. Although you are usually a wanderer, you don’t like to cling to people or places for a long time, and you don’t take roots easily. This year you will go through some significant changes that will take you out of your comfort zone.
VIRGO
As an Earth sign governed by Mercury, this one is the symbol of change. You will continue to debut with amazing momentum in the business domain, and especially in important personal acquisitions. It can be about a house, an inheritance, or a very important gain that Virgos have been waiting for a long time.
PISCES
The abundance available to you for the remaining part of this year is found within the relationship you can form with yourself. You will have a tremendous fortune in love, although you won’t realize it in the beginning. Love will arrive in the most unusual form—if it hasn’t already.

VIRTUAL
DATING THE
UNEXPECTED
Benefits By Ilsy J. Hoo
If you’d told me in January of 2020 that you had to get off our business Zoom call to get ready for your virtual date or dating event, I would have given you the side eye. With the pandemic, however, our lives have changed how we communicate with family, friends, and business colleagues. And for singles stuck inside and not willing to put their dating lives completely on hold, Zoom, FaceTime, and the like sit atop a very short list of options. Since human interactions play an important role in our mental health, virtual dating has been a lifesaver for many. Not yet convinced? Well, get ready because I’m going to tell you all the unexpected benefits of virtual dating.

ONLINE DATING SITES ARE
Getting Creative
IT’S A GREAT SCREENING TOOL According to Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, vol. 34, 8, men lie more about their height and women lied more about their weight. Overall, participants reported being the least accurate about their photographs and the most accurate about their relationship information. In the first few minutes of a virtual date, you are able to see if a potential partner’s real persona matches all those profile pictures. It also gives you a sneak peek into their living environment. Are there dirty clothes on the floor? Does she have 10 cats roaming the couch? (Unless you’re OK with that, of course.) Does he have small children in the background calling him Daddy but his profile says he doesn’t have children? After the screening process, you can then decide if that someone will be put on the Meet-in-Person-When-It’s-Safe list—or if you should end the process now.
IT’S EASIER TO SCHEDULE According to Christine, a forty-something business development director who lives in New York City, it is much easier to coordinate virtual dates since she’s been working from home due to the pandemic.
According to Susan Hum, co-founder and “Success & Love Coach” at LoveInSync, online dating is here to stay. Even after the pandemic is gone, people will be busier than ever and will benefit from the convenience of clicking to connect with others. What sets LoveInSync apart, she explains, is that the app is focused on dating and personal development. “People know what they want, but they don’t know what they need; that’s why we focus on personal development. When our users are in the right mindset they can then pursue others online,” Susan explains.

LoveInSync created a dating game show called “Real Role Play,” which was inspired by a concept created by Sean Callagy of Unblinded Movement, which is based on integrity-based human influence. It helps people influence others in a way that’s comfortable and genuine. Members of the app have an opportunity to be on the show and answer a series of questions in which thousands of singles can watch. It’s a fun new way to get to know someone in the virtual “Dating Game.”
What’s something you’re most proud of?
Here/Now (formerly known as Perchance) has been hosting virtual dating mixers in which a “In the past, it was so difficult to schedule curated group of 10 singles log dates during the week due to heavy work onto Zoom at a set time and travels. IT CAN ENHANCE YOUR COMMUNICATION For some, the words “first date” are cringe-worthy, but since being in your own space can make you feel more comfortable, virutal dating allows you to be more at ease and open about who you are. This can lead to interesting conversations without the stress of awkward silences as you try to settle into each other’s vibe.
Overall, this type of dating has given singles a different opportunity that requires them to spend more time getting to know each other on a deeper level before jumping into sexual relations. It’s been refreshing for those truly looking to find love, and many believe it will thrive long past the COVID-19 pandemic. If you been nervous or shy to try online dating, it may be time to give it a go. You may be pleasantly surprised at the unexpected benefits!

ME & YOU +WHO? What Happens When Your Friendships Start to Affect Your Relationship By Jarrod Thalheimer
H
aving friends is always worth the hassle. Any network, large or small, featuring strong, supportive friendships is integral to a fulfilling and happy life. Friends help us through the good times and the bad. They protect and support us, sometimes when no one else will. Often, they are the very ones lighting the way toward the kind of deep, lasting connections we seek to define our lives more fully.
96
But what happens when they don’t? What happens when those we count as friends actually start to hurt our deeply held relationships? Think it can’t happen? Think again.
THE EX-LOVER
THE PERMANENT
We’ve all had them—the ex who didn’t work out romantically but somehow clicked perfectly as a best friend. Just like Jerry and Elaine from “Seinfeld,” right? Your shared friendship is perfectly ordered and totally separate from the intricacies of your day-to-day love life. At least, until it isn’t.
It’s almost always pitched as a pity situation… “He’s just such a great guy–I can’t understand why he can’t find love... let’s take him to dinner with us.” What kind of monster says “no” to helping out a buddy? Thing is, when said buddy goes on to become the permanent third wheel of your relationship, you’re adding a layer of difficulty no one needs. And it rarely stops there. Shared dinners become shared vacations, which become shared apartments and then shared mortgages and….well, you get the picture.
THE BESTIE
Best Friend Third Wheel Critic
We like to think that ex-lovers can be friends, but let’s get real—most relationships end because one party just couldn’t see themselves going further. Too often, the other holds a candle, “lying low” as they wait for “another shot.” That can spell trouble for your new relationship. Take a close look at your ex-lover. Are there any residual feelings or long-shot thoughts of “What if?” If so, you need to break things off ASAP, both for your protection and theirs. Will it be hard? Absolutely. Is it necessary? Without a doubt.
ONE OF
Bonus points for a partner who cares enough to help a friend, but if you sense even a whiff of this becoming a semipermanent addition to your union, you’ve got to nip it in the bud—and fast! It’s one thing to pull up an extra chair for a meal or two, and quite another requiring any house you buy to have a guest suite built in.
the Family
You knew him well. He was just so perfectly…nice. And everyone loved him—your friends, family, even your parents. Problem was, things just never really sparked between you two. You broke it off but he continued to keep touch with all your friends and family. And your parents! He even visits them from time to time, long after you’ve both stopped dating. Obviously, this kind of rolling faux pas leads to the kind of butt-puckering bliss you experience when your mom or dad encourages you to “give him another chance” right in front of the new guy you’re dating. You need to pull your parents and your friends off to one side and give ‘em the 411: “He’s not with me, which means he’s no longer with you.” Yes, you may be called heartless and cruel, but you will also have a real shot at securing a relationship with someonw who actually interests you. If you family can’t understand that, you’ve got bigger problems.
THE
Co-worker
She was there the night you met…and she hated him just as much then as she still does today. The move is always the same: She smiles to his face, even as you all make awkward conversation. Then, as soon as he leaves, she lays into him directly to you. “He never treats you right” or “He’s just not good enough for you.” That’s fine in the early stages, when you’re still unsure and need some pumping up, but when you’ve made your choice and want to pursue a relationship, having that kind of venom mainlining into your skull on a daily basis isn’t helpful at all. Your BFF might mean well, but if you don’t put an end to all the behind-the-scenes hatred, it will begin to affect your new relationship. Encourage her to ease off on the criticism at least, and maybe find some positives. If she just can’t, then a choice will have to be made. It’s not easy…but no one said relationships were for the faint of heart.
THE HIGH SCHOOL
Crush
This one comes almost completely courtesy of Facebook. Once upon a time, past loves or crushes simply faded into the ether of hazy memories. Now, they get a second life as a Facebook friend. It always starts innocently enough. “Hey, look who tagged me!” Suddenly a girl who wouldn’t give him a second look in the fifth grade is sharing memes about the “old days” at school. And wouldn’t you know it, she is also recently divorced! Social media is a tricky one. Keep your eye on messages shared but call an audible if you have to. If things are getting too darn cozy, then you need to cut it off quick. Incursions into your love life—digital or not—need to be met with swift and firm resistance. If this were happening in a bar, you wouldn’t stand for it. You don’t have to on Facebook either.
Never underestimate the power of time spent together. You might have your better half from evenings until morning (plus weekends), but her co-worker is seeing her (at her best) from 9-5pm every day. They share office space, meals, setbacks, and triumphs. They fight corporate villains, overcome demanding bosses, and even share inside jokes with one another. That’s powerful stuff. Sure, she says they’re “just friends,” and they likely are. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t chances for something more. Play it carefully. Get to know her “office buddy,” and make it clear you are very much “in the picture.” If there is going to be a third wheel in this set-up, it better not be you.

Manic Mornings for Mom BELLA’s own Lauren Vena has been a professional makeup artist for 20 years. That means she’s looking red-carpet ready at breakfast every morning, right? Um, not exactly. It’s far less glamorous— especially when bare feet and Legos are involved. That’s why she wrote the fun children’s book, “My Mom…The Best Mom Ever.” Told from the point of view of her children, Lauren’s story sets out to affirm that while hard-working mamas might be holding on by a thread, they are absolute rock stars in the eyes of their children. THE BEST OF THE BEST You know the cliché, “It’s an honor just to be nominated”? Well, if you’re talking about the Booker Prize for Fiction, it truly is. The honor bills itself as “the leading literary award in the English-speaking world” and is reserved for the best novel of the year that is published in the UK or Ireland, though it is not limited to the novelists of those countries—you’ll see some American authors on this year’s list. The competition’s winners are announced in three parts: the long list, the short list, and finally the winner. It’s a really big deal to have your novel be included on the long list—Brandon Taylor’s reaction on Twitter to the news that his “Real Life” was among the books was pretty epic.

atricia Velásquez is an actress, model, activist, author, and mother; she’s quintessentially the “Wayúu Princess” of all trades. Her work in the acting and modeling industries has been award- winning and precedent-setting, including international runways and magazine covers, and blockbuster movie roles. More recently, with the conception of a nonprofit organization that has its sights set on changing the hunger crisis one disadvantaged child at a time, Patricia is cementing her name and her humanitarian imprint on the world. From humble beginnings, it was not only Patricia’s striking beauty that catapulted her into the modeling world, but also her desire to help support her family financially. Leaving her home in Venezuela, she set out for the fashion capital of Milan, where she was scouted to model. With a natural ability in front of the lens and an unwavering work ethic, Patricia has worked with some of the most high-profile names in fashion and beauty, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cover Girl, and Chanel, just to name a few. “It was never an overnight success story,” Patricia says of her long journey to success and notoriety in the modeling industry. Working and living in the most prominent, fashion-laden places around the globe, like Spain, Japan, Paris, and New York, she excelled. She soon met the iconic designer, Karl Lagerfeld, with whom she formed both a professional and personal bond. “I’m always going to think of him as an angel,” says Patricia, who was featured on Lagerfeld’s very first cover. Growing up training in dance and theater, Patricia’s fluidity and creativity in front of the camera was transcendent in both modeling and acting. The natural progression to the big screen was inevitable when the star accepted her first movie role because of her Wayúu heritage and the film’s portrayal of an indigenous community. Since then, her acting career has skyrocketed, landing leading-lady and powerhouse-female roles in movies like “The Curse of La Llorona,” “The Mummy,” and “The Mummy Returns.” In 2002, in the wake of her uncle’s passing, Patricia channeled her philanthropic passion into creating the Wayúu Tayá Foundation, with her uncle’s final words in mind, “Don’t forget about the Wayúu.” The Wayúu Tayá Foundation was a way for her to give back to her childhood
home of Venezuela and the indigenous people of the Wayúu, honoring her Wayúu roots. The organization was created with the objective of improving the living quality of the indigenous communities in Latin America while maintaining and respecting their traditions, cultures, and beliefs. Instantly, Patricia received an outpouring of encouragement from her fashion industry friends, all of whom rallied around her in support of this mission. With fellow supermodels and renowned designers in her corner, like Iman, Carolina Herrera, and Isaac Mizrahi, the foundation was born. “If I can start with a pre-school, that will guarantee the kids are getting at least two meals a day,” says Patricia when explaining how she conceptualized this mission, which today feeds more than 12,000 children each day. In the midst of the current worldwide pandemic and closed borders, the indigenous people of Venezuela are lacking access to water, electricity, gas, and sewage, which has led to the spreading of disease, viruses, and malnutrition. The mission of Patricia’s foundation is simply providing access to food, health care, water, and now masks for these vulnerable communities along the northern Venezuela-Colombia border. Today, the Wayúu Tayá Foundation provides nutritional drinks to the children each day, along with masks to ensure their health and safety from the virus. “The children all take it very seriously,” says Patricia, noting that the kids walk 5 kilometers to school to retrieve these necessities because they understand and appreciate the importance of protecting themselves and having access to such precious provisions. Spearheading the One for One program, a very important initiative of the Wayúu Tayá Foundation, Patricia made the dream of feeding and protecting these children a reality. After already supplying hundreds of masks, this program provides a mask to a vulnerable child in need for every piece of Wayúu Tayá Foundation merchandise that is purchased. “We must continue to do our part, and—with everyone’s support—we can double that impact.” Over the years, the Wayúu Tayá Foundation has saved thousands of lives because of the love and support of people throughout the U.S. Patricia’s heartfelt gratitude for the impact this support has had on the lives of the Wayúu is genuine and implicative that the work must continue. “That is the true conscious of giving—of wanting to help somebody else,” says Patricia of the capacity for so many to care for a people that may never meet, and ultimately, change lives for the better.

Cheesecake Bars By Kimberlee Ho of kickassbaker.com
These easy cheesecake bars come together super quickly. With a no-bake cheesecake filling, loads of sweet caramel apples on top, and a salty pretzel crust that doubles as a topping, you’ll love every bite of these sweet, salty, lusciously creamy dessert bars!
Serves: 16 Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes INGREDIENTS: For the Pretzel Crust: • 3 cups mini salted twist pretzels • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted • ¼ cup packed brown sugar • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon For the No-Bake Cheesecake Filling: • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature • 2 cups heavy whipping cream • ¼ cup granulated sugar For the Caramel Apple Topping: • ¼ cup unsalted butter • 4 medium tart apples, such as Granny Smith, peeled and sliced into ¼-inch slices • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • ¾ cup packed brown sugar • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350ºF (177ºC). Line an 8x8 inch baking pan with parchment paper and set aside. 2. Make the Pretzel Crust: To the bowl of a food processor, add the pretzels and pulse to make fine crumbs. (Alternatively, place pretzels in a sealed ziploc bag and crush with a rolling pin.) Measure out 1½ cups. Combine pretzel crumbs, brown sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter. Set aside ¼ cup of the crust. Press remaining crust evenly into the bottom of an 8x8 pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, until very lightly golden brown. Remove from oven and allow to cool while you prepare the cheesecake filling 3. Prepare the No-Bake Cheesecake Filling: In the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment affixed, add the softened cream cheese and beat on medium speed until smooth, about 2-3 minutes. Turn the mixer off and add the heavy whipping cream and sugar. Beat until thick and smooth, about 2 minutes. Spread the cheesecake filling evenly on top of the slightly cooled pretzel crust. Place in the fridge to chill while you prepare the topping 4. Prepare the Caramel Apple Topping: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the apple slices and lemon juice. Cook, stirring constantly, for 5-7 minutes or until apples are tender. Add the brown sugar and cinnamon and cook 2-3 minutes longer or until brown sugar is fully dissolved. Allow the apple mixture to cool slightly in the pan before topping the cheesecake bars with the apples. Carefully transfer the pan to the fridge and chill for at least 2 hours until set and firm. Cut into 16 squares and serve with pretzel crumb sprinkled on top. NOTES: To store, cover pan tightly with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to three days.

Toast TO THESE Tastemakers By Amanda Mactas
Not all food is created equal. And not all food brands are equally innovative. If you’re looking for small brands to discover and support right now, we’ve tasted endless amounts, and these are some of the tastiest, most inventive, and inspirational on the market.
THE COOKIE DEPARTMENT
Sweet Treats
THE COOKIE DEPARTMENT Like many food companies that cater to specific dietary needs, The Cookie Department as we know it today was founded by necessity. After Elannah Resnikoff suffered a traumatic brain injury, her husband and The Cookie Department founder, Akiva Resnikoff, who originally started the company with his Awaken Baked Caffeinated Cookie, decided to refocus the purpose of his cookies after Elannah’s doctors espoused the benefits of the ketogenic diet. On this new regimen, Elannah experienced decreased inflammation and a stabilization in her blood sugar. Coincidentally, the keto diet was growing ever more popular in the country at the same time. Akiva then decided to reformulate his line of functional cookies to a new line of keto cookies so his wife could enjoy them. Low in carbs, gluten-free, kosher, and containing zero artificial ingredients, the cookies are not only beneficial to your body, but also cater to those with dietary restrictions. Regularly touted as the best tasting keto cookies on the market, The Cookie Department currently boasts two delicious flavors, Mint Condition (double chocolate chip + mint) and Cake Walk (birthday cake + sprinkles), now joined by the brand new Champion Chip (chocolate chip), which just launched this fall. BUNNIE CAKES Born out of a desire to help her young son, Bunnie Cakes founder Mariana Cortez sought to bring delicious, quality, gluten-free and vegan baked goods to the market. Initially she experimented in her home kitchen, bringing mini cupcakes to local restaurants in the hopes they would sell them. Mariana eventually quit her full-time job after supplying handfuls of restaurants every week. As her business steadily grew, she moved to a kitchen space, and from there, a storefront near the Wynwood District in Miami. Since 2013, her space has earned numerous accolades, including Best Vegan Bakery in Miami, Best Cupcake in Miami, and even a successful appearance on the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars.” Bunnie Cakes Studio, which was built next to her storefront, is the first cupcake and cake decorating studio in Miami, where customers can book parties and learn top tips and tricks to doing-it-yourself, Bunnie Cakes-style. While this bakery definitely caters to a specific group of eaters, don’t cross it off your list if you’re not gluten-free or vegan—their treats are insanely delicious! And best of all, they recently launched nationwide shipping so now you can enjoy your Bunnie Cakes no matter where you reside. BunnieCakes.com
MOM IN THE MAIL When her eldest son headed off to college, Sharon Graves received a brochure for an automated care package company, and that’s when her idea for Mom in the Mail planted its seed. If you’re going to send a care package, it needs to be packaged with love and care, she thought. The award-winning baker and owner of LA’s BLVD Kitchen (a community-based cooking school, shop, and catering company) began sending care packages to her son in college and started receiving countless requests from friends and neighbors to send packages to their own children. Now, whether you’re a baker or not, or you’re strapped for time, you can send (or receive) a thoughtfully curated box of goodies all made from scratch. Each Mom in the Mail box comes with your choice of mom-made treats, a DIY thank-you card, a greeting card, and the option to include a note from you, too. Plus, customers have the choice to throw in some extra goodies for birthday celebrations, stressful days, or whatever occasion may arise. You won’t want to pass up on the opportunity to try these out-of-this-world cookies. MomInTheMail.com 107

Savory Snacks
SABOR MEXICANO Authentic, fresh products are the backbone of Jorge Saldana’s many food ventures. Growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, Jorge sought to bring the flavors and traditions he enjoyed growing up to California, where he owns two restaurants—Cancún Sabor Mexicano and Tlaloc Sabor Mexicano—which both utilize local ingredients for fresh farm-to-table Mexican cuisine. Following the success of his restaurants, Jorge noticed that his customers had a growing interest in bringing home his delicious chips and salsas. It was then that he created the Sabor Mexicano Foods line, which makes authentic, all-natural Mexican products, all by hand. The difference between their chips and your typical Tostitos is like night and day. Created using ingredients from Jorge’s Sonoma County farmhouse, Sabor Mexicano products are fresh, farm-quality thanks to careful growing and cultivation that’s free from pesticides, harmful chemicals, and GMOs. Not only are the company’s products simple, fresh, flavorful, and healthy, but they can leave you feeling good about their impact on the environment, too. SaborMexicano.com

How we work and dress for work has drastically changed over the course of the past seven months. Not only are many of us not dressing up day to day, but we’ve also been (not so) secretly wearing the same athleisure standard of black or blue leggings for working out and our Zoom calls. It felt like the days just blended together, and gone were the days of going to the gym or working out anywhere with friends. Why care, right?! This season we are reclaiming color and want to make sure we separate our workout wear from our actual workday clothing—even if we are still working from home. Thankfully, there are some bright stars in the fitness category that have all of us taking another look. These finds are so fun and functional, they’re making us here at BELLA want to get up and move more! Better yet, all of the brands we discovered truly want to empower and lift women up, which we couldn’t love more.

Love to
Nibble?
No Problem! By Jennifer Walsh
If eating healthy is a part of your plan for fall, we’re right there with you. All of this time at home, accompanied by quite a bit of uncertainty, has led to overeating across the board. It’s been a nerve-wracking time for many, so don’t feel bad if you’ve found yourself spending more time snacking than Zooming. (Maybe we are snacking because of all of the Zooming!) It’s no surprise that many Americans have admitted to gaining 15 pounds over the past six months, giving rise to the term “Quarantine 15.” Dr. John Morton, medical director of bariatric surgery at Yale New Haven Health System, has seen patients in telehealth appointments who have gained five, 10, and even 30 pounds. While many of us are continuing to work and school from home, it’s important to get the constant “bad” snacking under control. That means filling our pantries with great, good-for-you goodies that can help fulfill our cravings while also making them delicious and guilt-free. Here are a few of our favorite finds…

Once you meet Nadia, you feel like you have known her your entire life—she’s that kind of woman. Kindness shines from her eyes and her heart is as big as her smile. Her relatable way of how she conducts her business— she specializes in Pilates and Barre classes—makes her workouts feel more accessible and possible. Nadia refers to herself as a mindset and movement expert that helps women get out their heads and into their bodies. She also focuses on helping women of color move and meditate. Her weekly virtual classes have received amazing feedback on how these express workouts have helped so many women align their mind and body. Paired with short meditations at the end of each session, students new and old are discovering the importance of mindfulness when it comes to creating a complete wellness journey. For many, working out or getting healthy is about the body, but without the mind as part of the plan, it’s hard to align for long-term success, Nadia explains. “When I graduated from college I struggled with losing weight in a healthy way and actually being able to keep it off. It wasn’t until I aligned my mind and body that I saw lasting results that truly changed my life. I was my first client.” Nadia changed her life via her own weight loss journey. She dedicated her life to sharing that power with others through her company, Nadia Murdock Fit, which she launched in 2012. Her book, “You Can Have It All,” chronicles her personal journey to lifelong wellness. Nadia has a B.A. in psychology, is certified in Pilates and Barre, and taps into the strength and power of the mind when advising others in achieving their fitness goals. She teaches Virtual Mindset Barre classes via Zoom, which are 30-minute classes, and recently launched the 4-Week Ultimate Jump Start, which includes guided meditations and mindful Barre workouts.
Her COVID Pivot
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nadia, like many others, had to find new ways to engage with customers and clients while keeping them tuned in and feeling good. She knew she had an audience; it was just about reaching them in a meaningful and as impactful way as possible in such an uncertain time. Of course, it wasn’t always easy. “Balancing my company, pregnancy, a toddler, and my husband working from home was no easy task. At the same time, it encouraged me to explore new things, ways of life, coping mechanisms, and alternative avenues of serving others,” says Nadia. “Although we have known people who have contracted and/or passed away from COVID-19, it has truly given my family a deeper appreciation for gratitude and those that matter most.” Her determination to help others helped her launch her own business. “For years I was merely a fitness enthusiast and eventually decided to turn my passion into a career. It was the best decision I ever made. Having the ability to influence so many women’s lives in a positive way has been such a blessing.”

SCENTS “DOWN THERE” BY JENNIFER WALSH
Women have often carried shame around about their scent “down there.” As females, we all have different body scents and natural odors. However, there are many different reasons women may experience an “unpleasant” type of odor. This can be due to changes in hormonal levels, stress, diet, hygiene, sexual activity, medications, and body composition.
We turned to Casey-Ann Collins, an RN, MSN, FNP-C at Garden OB/GYN in New York City, who was recently named a Top Nurse by the International Nurse’s Association, to help us understand a few things about what’s going on down there. Why do we have the scent we do?
In my practice, the most common culprit for unpleasant odors are due to pH imbalances that often lead to bacterial and fungal infections of the vagina known as bacterial vaginosis and vaginal candidiasis, commonly known as yeast infections. While changes in vaginal scents are normal as we age, they’re also based on factors like hormones, vaginal pH, diet, and lifestyle. A women’s body odor can definitely change for the better or for the worse. For example, a menopausal woman may find herself having more distinct odors if she struggles with urinary incontinence or has an underlying condition like Diabetes Mellitus, which will put her at increased risk for yeast infections. On the flip side to that, I find that younger patients who are sexually active with more than one partner are more likely to report experiencing fishy odors and malodorous discharge.
And what about the unending supply of washes for women on the market?
Feminine washes have become quite controversial these days. I often have patients report their vaginal odor worsening after using various feminine washes. However, I do believe they have their place as far as restoring vaginal pH and thus preventing unpleasant odors. My advice to my patients is to always stay away from heavily scented soaps and washes because the perfumes and chemicals within them are more likely to either dry out or irritate the vagina. However, studies have shown that just using plain water, in addition to practicing good hygiene is enough to prevent unwanted odors.
So what can we do to freshen things up?
Even with the practice of good hygiene, unpleasant odors can sometimes occur. We are not meant to smell like flowers, and we all have different scents. It is important to consider all factors, such as diet, your stress level, medications, contraceptive use, body composition, and your hormones. It is always a good idea to ensure your sexual partner and/or sexual activities do not play a negative role as well. Thus, maintaining a clean diet, staying hydrated, incorporating probiotics, keeping stress levels to a minimum and practicing good personal and sexual hygiene can be beneficial in maintaining vaginal health and preventing unwanted odors.

After a number of years, the integrity of the implant itself, along with the natural changes our bodies experience as a result of aging, are contributing factors when it comes to having breast revision surgery.

In an in-depth conversation, BELLA sat down with Dr. Preminger to learn more about breast implants, revision surgery, and why maintenance is the number one piece of information she stresses to all of her patients.
What are the different types of breast implants?
Traditionally, there are silicone and saline implants, which are basically sterile salt water. Silicone implants are pre-filled and come in specific sizes; saline are put in empty and filled up through a small tube. The silicone implants feel more natural because they are a cohesive gel; saline is like a bag of water. Sometimes you can see more visible rippling with a saline implant than you would with silicone. And when saline ruptures, which may eventually happen since these are all man-made devices, the implant leaks with the saline becoming absorbed into the body and the implant deflates. With silicone, a leak is harder to pick up and is usually diagnosed on imaging.
When it comes to mammograms, should women with implants proceed in the same manner as women without?
I see patients afraid to go for a mammogram because of their implants, but you need to go for breast imaging the way you would if you didn’t have them. You’ll need to notify the mammographer that you have implants, and she’ll do something called an “Eklund view,” which is another way to look at the breast tissue around the implant. I put most of my implants under the pectoral muscle [implants can go above or below the muscle], which helps the mammographer as well.
What does the process of swapping them out require?
You can change the type of implant, and even the size. I have 3D imaging in my office, which allows me to show patients what they would look like with certain amounts of volume. They can visualize what they’ll look like a little bigger or smaller.
In 1992, silicone implants were taken off the market for safety concerns, but the studies used to determine that information was found to not be based in any real science. Once it was determined that they were safe, they were put back on the market in 2006.
Something to also keep in mind—if you’ve lost some weight, been pregnant, or breast fed, that could contribute to the sagging of the breast, so you might need a lift at the same time as the implant exchange. If the implants are intact, I go in, take the implant out, put a new one in, and do a lift if needed. The more complicated procedures come when they’ve had them in for a long time and there are some issues—then it becomes a different kind of operation.
How would you advise a patient on which implant to choose?
It’s a totally personal choice. What I tell my patients is that they need to be able to sleep at night; if they have concerns about silicone, whether they’re actually based on science or not, they should go with a saline implant. If they’re looking for the most natural feel, a silicone implant is the better choice.
How often should patients have their implants checked?
TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS SILICONE:
Made of a cohesive gel, this type of implant feels the most natural, like breast tissue.
SALINE:
Is it a painful procedure, and what is the recovery time?
It’s generally not a painful procedure. When patients first have an implant put in, there can be some discomfort from the stretching of the tissue, which resolves fairly quickly. If all they’re doing is swapping out the implant either for a larger or smaller one, the stretching process has already happened so it’s not a particularly painful procedure. When there is more work to be done, patients may experience a bit more discomfort post-op.

BREAST REDUCTION & LIFT By Dr. Aviva Preminger
“Enhancing your breasts can provide balance to your figure and greatly boost your self-confidence.” - Dr. Preminger Do you think your breasts are…Too small? Too large? Asymmetric? Do your breasts droop? Have you lost fullness? Some women have never been happy with the appearance of their breasts, while others have experienced significant changes over time. Whatever your concern, there is a solution. If you want to increase breast size and fullness, a breast augmentation may be the procedure for you. Three dimensional imaging can even help you visualize your result and find the breast size you desire. Some women have enough volume, but it’s all sitting in the lower part of the breasts causing sagging and drooping. This is particularly common after pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss. A breast lift may be the key to restoring fullness in all the right places. Breasts that are too large, however, can cause back and shoulder pain and interfere with exercise and weight loss. If that’s your issue, a breast reduction may be the solution. At your consultation, we will discover what you like and dislike about your breasts and create a customized surgical plan that will address all of your breast concerns, leaving you looking and feeling your best - a more confident, beautiful you!

BELLA's fab 5
5 for Fall 2020
By Norah Lawlor Our cities are slowly but surely reopening since the COVID-19 pandemic. Summer was the first few steps toward the new normal, and this autumn season will help get us even closer. You can view beautiful real estate properties, finally get that much-needed haircut, see a terrifying horror film just in time for Halloween, or support filmmakers of color. Here are five gurus to know and to help you enjoy this fall. THE FILMMAKER: CRAIG SINGER Craig Singer has directed award-winning indie flicks with the likes of Debbie Harry and Neil Patrick Harris. He has been the recipient of an Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Primetime Emmy Award nomination and a Silver Telly Award. He’s also launched cutting-edge tech companies that integrated film with the Internet and social media, and spent almost a decade working as a creative VP for Disney. Now Craig’s back in the director’s chair with a new edge-ofyour-seat and eerily timely horror film: “6:45.” Storyboard.film/portfolio/645/
THE PRODUCER: NICOLE AVANT Nicole Avant has been an actress, music executive, U.S. ambassador, and half of a Hollywood power couple with husband Ted Sarandos. Her newest accolade: film producer. Her latest project, “The Black Godfather,” on Netflix, is a documentary about her father, Clarence Avant, one of the most connected and successful African American power brokers in the music industry. He launched record labels, owned radio stations, and became a key figure in politics and the civil rights movement. IMDB.com/name/nm0042784/
