Editorial Happy New Year 2014 It is great to look back and see all the success that happened the last year. Our grand event, the Asian Networkers Convention by World of Professionals, proved to be a successful event that is leading us to having the next convention this coming June 2014 in the Philippines. We expect more participants and speakers to be there and will truly be a wonderful experience. TPMag has had it’s first year anniversary last November and we have survived the struggling period of being a start-up magazine. We are not a start-up anymore and the brand is already known throughout Thailand. We thank our readers and supporters for believing in us in the past year and we look forward to having a better year this year. Our cover story features Dr. Luis, a doctor in Traditional Chinese Medicine. He has also received a Thailand Professionals award for being the “Best Doctor in Traditional Chinese Medicine 2013”. Read his story in page 8. “If there is one thing to do this year, do it better”. Our goal this 2014 is to raise our standards and reach higher to attain our goals. What is you your goal this year? Don’t let is wash away with temporary new year resolutions, but take those goals into action and you will be glad that you spent your time working on your dreams. ‘Til next time!!! PROFESSIONAL SECRETS

Fail-safe ideas for New Year’s Resolutions by Jim Freeman

I

f you made a New Year’s Resolution, you aren’t alone — at least according to the University of Scranton, Journal of Clinical Psychology, which reports that 45 percent of Americans usually make New Year’s Resolutions while an additional 17 percent occasionally make them (as opposed to 38 percent who claim they absolutely never make New Year’s Resolutions.

do it! Write a check and mail it - resolution kept!

The Journal also broke down the Top 10 resolutions for 2014 and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that topping the list is “losing weight,” especially in the wake of Halloween candy, Thanksgiving feasts, Christmas dinners and New Year’s Eve festivities.

Don’t set yourself up for failure, chances are pretty good you aren’t going to turn your life around, but it would be nice if you could laugh just a little more, or spend an extra afternoon or two with the grandchildren jerking bluegills out of an old farm pond. Certainly that is something almost anyone can do.

Rounding out the top five were, in order: getting organized, spending less – saving more, enjoying life to the fullest, staying fit and healthy. The remaining five were, in order: learn something exciting, quit smoking, help others in their dreams, fall in love, and spending more time with family. When the fitness center at Southern High School was open, it was pretty common to see a large crowd of people there after the beginning of the year. Usually the crowd had thinned out by Groundhog Day and by Valentine’s Day it seemed like it was back to the “usual” crowd. Me? I didn’t make a resolution, but with that being said I do appreciate the ending of one year and the beginning of another as a chance to reflect upon the past year, measure its successes and failures, and look for ways to improve for the coming year. I guess one could make the argument that is in itself a resolution. For me, losing that “winter coat” is an annual event; hardly worthy of something as dignified as a resolution. It’s just something I have to do. However if I were going to make a resolution for this upcoming trip around the sun I would want it to be something worthwhile, like trying to love people a little more, and judge them a little less. On the other hand, if you haven’t already made your resolution, let me throw out a few suggestions: Do it now! Resolve to donate to a local charity or animal shelter, and just

For self-improvement resolutions, commit yourself: sign up for that oncein-a-lifetime hunt or register for that big race. There’s nothing like picking a date, buying a license, and sending in a deposit or registration fee to force yourself to get into shape and lose that weight.

Furthermore, be realistic, you can’t resolve to win the lottery but you can be like that little kid on the commercial and resolve to eat more jellybeans this year. Make a difference in your own community; help clean things up. Even if you only pick up one bag of litter, you have done at least that much to beautify your environment. Know your limitations. At the risk of being accused of encouraging people to dream small and aim low, I would suggest that a series of small, attainable goals will accomplish far more than one unreachable goal. It’s all good to shoot for the stars, but know that few people ever attain them. Finally, don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t keep your resolution. If it helps you feel any better about it, the Journal also reported that 25 percent of people broke their resolutions in the first week, and only eight percent of people reported successfully keeping their New Year’s Resolutions. So whatever you do, good luck and try to include the great outdoors in your plans – and if you get the chance, try to get some youngsters involved as well. PROFESSIONAL PEOPLE

JERUBEM ERA

Designing with Soul

Our in-house layout designer talks about his passion for design and photography and projects for the coming year.

T

his issue’s Professional People features our very own graphic designer and layout artist, Jerubem Era. Bem, as he is called by friends, handles the graphics and layout designs for Thailand Professionals Magazine and Asian Networkers Magazine. He is also the owner of “The Box World” and also does the media consultation to our magazine and other media groups. “The Box World” is a premiere media service that provides high quality media output for desktop publishing, audio, and video services, such as: magazines, DVD training, music videos, print design, and other forms of media. “The Box World” has also made its debut professional video project in filming the music video for rising Iranian singer/songwriter, Shadi Amini. TPMag decided to get an exclusive interview with Bem as many people have been asking us about the person behind our stunning layout designs and professionally made magazine. TPMag: How did you become the layout guy for TPMag? Bem: I met with Shahin a few years back for another project he was working on. From the first day onwards, we sort of clicked with layout ideas and started creating designs and brochures for other companies. We were like an outsource company before TPMag.When the idea of a magazine came up, I was confident to get on it right away because I was confident in my design strength. TPMag: What is your layout experience before doing the magazine? Bem: I have been doing layout and design for more than 17 years. I started in College as a layout artist for the school yearbook. There I discovered an interest in design. I somehow specialized in yearbooks and brochures even after college and did some freelance jobs for that school that I worked for. When I came to Thailand, I was in charge of the school yearbooks and brochures for the schools I’ve worked at. I always tried to venture in to other fields not involving desktop publishing, but it seemed that I had a calling to be in this field. My first venture into the professional magazine business was with EXL magazine as a part time layout and marketing. With that experience, I learned how magazine companies were operated and the kind of layout that was ideal for the readers. TPMag: We also know that some of the photographs in the magazine were taken by you. How did you get into photography? Bem: I was always fascinated with photography. Although it took me a while until I owned my own camera, I always enjoyed looking at great photography in magazines. I used to cut out nice pictures inside magazines and put them in a folder to view from time to time. I was using the camera of the schools that I’ve worked for and learned how to take better pictures. It was not until I decided to buy my own dslr that started my career in photography. I had an opportunity to be an assistant of internationally known photographer, Jose Tan. I was connected by a mutual friend to help Jose. There, I learned the art of commercial photography as I tagged along commercial photo shoots and assisted in photography seminars. I later developed a workflow that I liked and got a lot of possitive responses from Facebook and other photography sites such as 500px. com. My strenths are not in photography alone, but also in video. I also did a lot of adversing videos for schools and companies and also did some behind the scenes shoots for seminars and commercials. This helped me get the experience and knowledge and prepared me for the professional music video production. TPMag: Tell us about The Box World Bem: The Box World started in the Philippines in 2001. We were called “The Box Studio.” We specialized in audio production and recording. Unfortunately, after 2 years, we became bankrupt and had to start all over again. That’s when I started doing small-time jobs and restructuring the business plan. Today, The Box World is starting on its mass media products to deliver media services to companies through print media and video production.

6 | TPMag January 2014

TPMag: What are your plans for 2014? Bem: At the moment, I am starting to write a book on photography and media. We are fairly busy also with new plans for TPMag and Asian Networkers magazine so I will have to budget my time wisely. We are planning the TPTV show and hopefully we will be able to start some time this year. I will also be giving some workshops on photography soon through The Box World as I have received some requests from friends who like my style of photography. TPMag: What advice can you give our readers who may want to start a business or do media work. Bem: One friend told me: if you want your business to grow, you have to raise your standards and learn only the specific skills that will make you successful. Raising your standard builds your reputation, therefore, builds your brand. Learning specific skills such as marketing and social media will help you also grow your business. If you are not good at selling, you have to concentrate on that weakness or find someone who can help you or do it for you. Media work requires a lot of technical and art skills, but marketing and advertising are also equally as important and those skills also have to be mastered because they will get you to where you want to go. So keep on developing your craft to be the best you can be and also develop the skills to be successful in business.

Can we begin this interview with this question: What is Tradicional Chinese Medicine? Luis Filipe : Good Afternoon. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is one of the oldest and most complete natural method of healing, that brings to the body optimum health. Cinnamon lowers your bad cholesterol (or LDL), treats Type 2 Diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels and increases insulin production. It is a very powerful antifungal agent and can kill candida. Cinnamon provides relief for headaches and migraines, stablizes blood sugar, lowers blood sugar in people with diabetes, reduces inflammation, is an antioxidant, and fights bacteria.

Cinnamon has been shown in studies at the Department of Internal Medicine, Kangnam Korean Hospital, to reduce cytokines linked to arthritic pain. It’s been proven effective for menstrual pain and infertility. Cinnamon contains a natural chemical called cinnamaldehyde, which studies show increases the hormone progesterone and decreases testosterone production in women, helping to balance hormones. Cinnamon now has medical proof that it boosts memory and holds promise for various neurodegenerative diseases including: Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, and meningitis according to research at the Cytokine Research Laboratory, Department of Experimental Therapeutics, @ The University of Texas. Their research also shows that cinnamon reduces chronic inflammation linked with these neurological disorders.

SECRETS TO YOUR SUCCESS IN 2014 99% of the time, success doesn’t just

happen. Success is made. If you study successful people, you see that they have common denominators that make them alike, and we’ve learned that there is an actual science to achieving success. That’s why people who achieve success once are able to do it again and again. What I’m going to talk here is about some of the principles on Goal Setting that you need to implement this year. In addition to this not so difficult secret, I’m also going to cover some approaches or tricks that you could implement quickly to take charge of your Life – after all you have only one, don’t let it slip away, and not this year. KEEPING IT SIMPLE I have used this exercise more than fifteen times since I discovered it five years ago. The exercise is called “keep, start, and stop.” The idea is rather simple, but profound. First, make a list of all things you need to “keep” doing in order to reach your goals. Honestly, we don’t give ourselves enough credit for what we do that works for us. At this time of year we want to jump into the “start,” we want to rush to the new stuff. But reaching your goals likely doesn’t mean that you have to scrap everything your doing. A lot of what you do now is already producing good results. What do you need to “keep” doing? Second, make a list of what you need to “start” doing. Look at your goals for 2014. That is where you are going. Look at where you are now. What do you need to start doing to bridge that gap and reach that better future? My hunch is that you already know what you need to do, that it’s the difficult stuff that no one likes to do. What belongs on your “start” list? And here is where the action is: your “stop” list. From year to year, we add more and more to our “to do” lists without adding anything to our “to-don’t” lists. If there is one thing that will derail your ability to reach your goals it is going to be your refusal to give up the things that steal your time, your physical energy, and your emotional energy and make room for your priorities. Be honest, what are you hanging on to? What are the things that you need to “stop” doing in order to reach your goals? What do you do that requires an investment of time and energy and doesn’t produce the results you need? What no longer works? Go ahead and answer these questions now. Maybe you need to add, “Stop procrastinating” to your list? Or maybe you need to add, “stop accepting to take time out to work on yourself.” Taking ten minutes here will help. SCEINCE OR ART BEHIND IT How can only 3% of us do this? How can

something that is absolutely necessary for Success be ignored by so many people? You wouldn't build a house without a blueprint, You wouldn't drive somewhere new without directions (unless you're a man) and you shouldn't live your life without doing this. What am I talking about? Very simply I am talking about setting goals and becoming clear on exactly what you want in life. Have you done it? Statistically, New Year is the time when most people take time to sit down and map out a plan for their future. Do you want to make more money, would you like to change your body, or go on a life changing vacation? It all starts with a decision and a plan... Set yourself SPECIFIC Goals – Look for what is Realistic and Achievable, while at same time stretches you. Do not create Goals, which are way beyond your capacity. I do know of Speakers who talk about Aim Big, Dream Big but what works real time for of us is how much we are grounded Write your Goal - Focus on what you wantnot what you don’t want. How much…by when, and qualify it with your Affirmation. Put simply an affirmation is how happy or grateful you would feel after achieving the said goal. Add your next steps, post your affirmation. For example, suppose my Business (or Work) goal and objective is: To grow my consulting practice to 6 dedicated cliental by March 2014. My affirmation could read: I’m so happy and grateful that I now have 8-10 repeat business avenues in my consulting practice. Next Steps could be double of the business development meeting to 2 clients per week or meet one new client per week. You could create similar goals for Financial, Relationships, Health & Fitness, Fun time & Recreation, Personal & Spiritual aspect of my Life. Go public with your Goals - In an interesting shift from writing in your Planner or your Secret Diary, now you should declare your Goals to people near and dear to you. This is the only way you are making yourself accountable for fulfilling them. Track your Progress – whatever be your comfort level of measurement, it is vital that you don’t become soft in not measuring your progress on each of your Goals. These simple steps could be your blueprint for this year and may be starting point for a turnaround which has eluded you so far. HOW TO NOT SABOTAGE YOUR OWN SUCCESS Here I would wish to take the discussion to another level, because I feel without talking about the usual traps of “ leaving our Goals mid way” and getting into the vicious cycle of common perception that ‘Goal Setting is not for Me”, I would not be doing complete justice. Let me quickly introduce you with the concept

of Human Brain here. Put simply our brain or mind consists of two parts – the conscious mind and the unconscious mind. However there's a big distinction because the conscious part of our mind is the part of you that's logical. It's where your willpower is; and it knows what's right and what's wrong. It knows what you should do and what you shouldn’t do. Again, for a lot of people they know what to do. Maybe they should do certain work or they should eat certain foods or they should say certain things to people to improve their relationship. They know what to do; but the problem is they can't get themselves to do it regularly. They can't get themselves to do it automatically. And that's where the unconscious mind comes into effect because, usually, those behaviors are rooted in the unconscious mind. So, we have the conscious mind which is logical and it's where your willpower is; and then, we have the unconscious mind, the unconscious part of you which is literally running the show. The unconscious mind not only takes care of your breathing, your heartbeat, and the temperature of your body but it stores all of your learned behaviors. Think about how many behaviors you have learned in your life that you no longer need to think about that you can just do. Be it reading, writing, walking, riding a bike, and brushing your teeth, these are behaviors that you didn’t know how to do; you learned; and now you just do them automatically. The Big problem people make a lot of times is when they change, they fight against their unconscious mind. They never change their deeper perceptions and their deeper assumptions. They just try and say, “All right, I'm not going to do that anymore; I'm going to fight against that; I'm not going to eat those foods; I'm going to wake up early from now on.” But whatever it becomes, it’s a New Year’s resolution model, right ? But we don’t make any deeper changes; we’re just saying, “I'm just going to do it.” And, usually, that works as long as you’re focused and attentive on that thing. What happens next is that we get distracted or depressed or tired; and our conscious minds starts to focus on something else; and we fall back into our unconscious learned behaviors. Net effect- Goal abandoned. So the Secret of Success in Life is this ability to influence and program our unconscious mind. It is 100 % possible and the beauty is when you do that you begin to automatically do the behaviors that you want.
