Message from the President Dear NIVA Community, This school year has been a strong house clearing year that has brought us a few but highly rewarding accomplishments. To mention some are: 1. The restructuring of the school board, which will go through more fine-tuning to include specialists in the areas of law, corporate risk protection, and legal advice. 2. The establishment of career concentrations for the high school students and an advising system from the time they join Grade 9. All high school students must have their college education preparation aligned with their career plans to follow their four-year education. This information is published in the SY 2019-20 Student and Parent Handbook. 3. The office administration, level divisions, and curriculum and instruction departments have now become more independent and interconnected, and are making huge real changes in their departments. 4. The Physical Education and Sports department completed a restructure of including and providing training for sports competitions within the color house system of the school and for inter-school competitions. We are also witnessing how our students’ maturity have grown over the years, how they have become more interconnected with other schools in Thailand, and participating in global platforms. Another aspect of this maturity is the involvement of parents in NPSC and NSSB, which are becoming more formalized and focused. Looking back at our previous school years, we have much to celebrate and be thankful for! It just seemed like yesterday when our staff, students and parents helped our school earn a 5 Year Accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This school year, we have had one of the best visits that are making real positive changes in the school. As we look forward to ushering in another school year with more goals to meet and many exciting activities. NATHANNONT CHAISURIYANTHARN President, NIVA American International School

Message From The Chairman

A school is much more than an institution where our kids learn and graduate from. Certainly, the students are always in the center of interest, but let’s remember that a school can only be successful when all stakeholders work together as a whole - or as Mr. Anthony says: As a Holon (that means Universum, totality, or whole in Latin). We, the students, the parents and family members, the teachers, the school management, and the staff, understand that only if everyone tries his or her very best, NIVA is and will be the best school for our kids. A successful student emerges from this environment we create - at home, at school, and everywhere. But success also emerges from failures: Teachers and parents are the most important partners for the students to enable them to embrace failures and be prepared for another try. They show them that critical thinking, creativity, unconventional and innovative ideas, resilience, teamwork, freedom of speech, and a follow-through attitude are the ingredients of success - not only for themselves, their families, and friends but for the society as a whole. I would like to thank all NIVA teachers, parents, and the NIVA management and staff for their daily work and motivation to teach our kids.

DR. ROLAND PETRASCH Chairman of the NSSB

Message from the Head of Kindergarten

Learning, just like any adventure we take in life, begins with a single step. But as one goes through it day by day, enjoying the hours away, time will seem to fly. And just like that, another school year is over and a new one will soon begin. But as it is a journey, we should focus on what and how things unfold, rather than on when to finish and on what waits ahead. As the saying goes “Success is a journey, not a destination.” How do we measure a year in the kindergarten? August ushered us into the excitement of a new school year. Old friends met again and new teachers and students joined us. Tears were also a part of the new beginning. September was when we had the Teachers’ Day ceremony - a day when our teachers were honored. We also had our KG Day Camp - a day of circus fun. October brought in the Halloween thrill. We were all dressed up and enjoyed a lot of sweet treats. November made possible the delight of exploring things outside of the school. We went on a field trip to Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World where we learned more about sea creatures. We also celebrated Loy Krathong, honoring one important Thai tradition. December was short but sweet. We raised funds to help refugees at the Mae Sot border and made a lot of people happy. We also gave nice gifts to each other. January had us celebrate Children’s Day. For sure, it was the most fun! Kindergarten would not be possible without children! February sent us running, jumping, and racing through our KG Sports Day. Everyone played hard and everyone was a winner! March filled our days as we planned for the NIVA Fun Fair. We performed and played; joined by our parents, classmates, schoolmates, friends, and visitors. April was festive as we danced, honored our parents, and had water fun for Songkran. May came much faster than we thought it would. Graduation got us all happy and sad. Happy to have had such a great year. And sad that we had to say goodbye. But more than all the big celebrations we had each month, what happened in between was what mattered most. We got to meet and make new friends. We got better at reading, writing, counting, and coloring. We got along well with each other, we sang and danced together, learned to get up each time we fell, learned how to say sorry, made mistakes and learned from them, got better at doing things on our own, enjoyed working together, and so much more. And with all these, we knew that we were a team, a family - that kindergarten is made up of tiny hands and feet and hearts connected together in love and respect. Thank you children for a year full of wonderful memories - playing and learning together, with warm hugs and interesting conversations that will be treasured forever. Thank you KG parents for your generous support and warm partnership. Thank you KG teachers for your hard work, patience, dedication and passion. Because of you all, it was a wonderful journey through the school year 2018 - 2019! CHARITY GRACE BUGA-AY Kindergarten Coordinator

Teacher’s Remarks

A little message for my little ones: How fast the year did go! We sang, we read, we learned so much and shared all the fun. Everyone is very special in this class. How I loved to be your teacher. I saw the smiles grow on each face and watched as your sparkling eyes light up whenever we discover something new. I’ve witnessed these little children play and learn, grow and change from day to day. I hope that all the things we’ve done have helped you in many ways. You’ll always be a part of me, and I’ll be a part of you.

Message from the Head of Elementary

Every year, I have the privilege of witnessing something that words alone would not suffice to describe accurately. As students grow, so does the school, and so do I. It is an understatement to say that I learn as much from the students and the community as I teach them. In truth, I feel I have learned more from them than I could ever teach. As the head of elementary, it is with pride that I see students learn with joy and enthusiasm, surprising me at every turn with their creativity and thinking skills. It is also with pride that I count myself as a member of our community, a community filled with kindness, appreciation, and support. Amongst that community, at the heart of the elementary school, we find some of the greatest people I know: there are no words to describe the feeling I get when observing our elementary teachers in action, their dedication and hard work, fostering students’ growth academically and emotionally. There is no doubt that the students, their growth, their discoveries, their curiosity, and their happiness are what keeps making my position a blessing. That said, this is only true because of the support of those exceptional teachers, the outstanding staff, and the very supportive parents. NIVA (its students, its parents, its teachers, its staff, its community) is a synonym for family, a family I find myself returning to every year, eager to learn more, eager for the new discoveries it will lead to. PHILIPPE BURELLE Head of Elementary

Message from the Middle School Coordinator

55

Dear Niva Community, We have just completed another fantastic academic year at NIVA American International School. As the Middle School Division Coordinator, I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to parents, administration, teachers and especially students for their continuous support and endeavors for making NIVA a more nurturing and virtuous place where every individual can grow and succeed. Also, I would like to thank the team who made this yearbook and allowed us to share and remember our achievements in the school year 2018-19. 2018-19 was a fruitful year for Middle School students. They, with the help of our robust Student Intervention Plan and the assistance of their caring teachers, managed to lift the levels of their literacy, mathematical understanding, and science as it is evident from the results of MAP tests. Moreover, aside from the academic aspect, our Middle School students have been involved in a variety of meaningful and fun activities to help them build confidence and character so that they will be emotionally and socially ready to move on to High School. The most noteworthy of these events include Respect for Diversity Day, MS Camp, Fun Fair, Songkran, and more. Although 2018-19 was an excellent and successful year, we are constantly evaluating our actions and adjusting them for a better and more efficient future. This has been possible mainly because of our closeness as a community and teamwork. As Henry Ford wisely said: “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is a success. With kindest regards, FARZAM GARSHASBI Middle School Division Coordinator

Message from the Head of High School

High School graduation is the first in a series of very challenging hurdles that you will be asked to jump over the course of your life. These hurdles mark the culmination of thousands of hours of hard work, coupled with the tremendous emotional and financial investment each of you, and your families, have committed to this massive endeavor. It may seem to you now that the nuances of Algebra II, or the writing of A.P.A. papers was futile, but I assure you they will pay dividends. You see, it is not necessarily the mastery of these subjects that is so valuable, it is the understanding that the training one undergoes as they work towards completing these classes that helps us to develop a well-rounded approach to problem solving and life in general. You will all look back on these formative years of your education with different feelings. Some of you will long for the ease of high school academic work in comparison with the rigors of university requirements, while others will bask in the glow of remembering a time before bills and bosses. One thing that you will all agree on however, is that your high school years were the ones that best helped you to discover who you really are and what it is that you most want out of life. Mother’s Day Kindergarten Pajama Day Senior Bonding Camp Ror Dor SG Induction Ceremony Teacher’s Day Health Check-Up Kindergarten Day Camp

103 A

MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day in Thailand is a day to commemorate the birthday of H.M. Queen Sirikit - the mother of all Thai people. Every year, during the month of August, Thai households and public places are decorated with lights and portraits of the Queen. Mothers are known for their hard work and support of their family. During this event, students hand-crafted beautifully decorated cards to show their affection and gratitude to their mothers.

KINDERGARTEN PAJAMA DAY Kindergarten students wore pajamas to school on August 31 for the Pajama Day. They had their normal routine of classes, but the difference on this day could be seen in the smiles of the kids being excited to wear their “jammies”.

“I want to wear this everyday”, one student said.

104 A

SENIOR BONDING Senior bonding camp is when grade 12 students enjoy their last year together. The goal was to develop friendships and to unite all students in an effort to support each other as they complete their final year of high school. This camp provided training for leadership skills, teamwork, unity, endurance, love, sincerity, compassion, and appreciation for all classmates. The students had a great time and gave thanks to all the teachers who supported this event.

ROR DOR Ror Dor is a military training program for students. Every male Thai citizen is required to attend at least 3 years of this arduous program during high school, and these boys get a chance to represent their country with pride and honor.

105 A

SG INDUCTION CEREMONY The Student Government is run by a group of students who work hard to make the school a better place to learn. It is run by the SG President, who is elected at the end of every school year. This year’s President is Aeron de Guzman who promised to do his best to ensure that the students are happy. In order to be a member of the SG, students have to be elected by the other students. There are two SG representatives per class, including classes G and N, whose jobs are to focus on issues that currently face the school. Any complaints that students have are directed to the SG who work diligently to ensure that the problems are adequately addressed. They also work on managing the money needed in order to create successful and memorable events.

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION Halloween is mostly celebrated in the United States and Canada on the night of October 31st. Children wear costumes and go to people’s homes saying “Trick or treat!” to ask for candy and people give it to them. The suggestion is: “Give me a treat or I will play a trick on you.” People mainly dress up as ghosts, witches, or other scary things for Halloween. For Christians, it is the eve of All Saints’ Day, which begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide. This covers the three days – October 31 (All-Hallows Eve or Hallowe’en), November one and November two. All Hallows’ Eve is a Christianized feast influenced by Celtic harvest festivals and pagan roots.

114 A

GRADES 1-2 CAMP I bet every kid would love a sleepover in school if they’ve got the chance and I bet every kid’s dream would also be to go camping if given the chance. Well, at NIVA American International School, not only did the kids go camping, but we did it in school! On the 29th-30th of November, Grades 1 and 2 slept over in school. They did activities all day during the day and at the end of the day, they went up to the Hall where they had the opportunity to sleep inside their tents. Seeing all the smiles on the children’s faces was worth all the preparation that went into it.

117 A

LOY KRATHONG CELEBRATION

Loy Krathong day was held on the 22nd November 2018, where everyone dressed up in Thai traditional attire representing various decades of time. Students created “Krathongs - small boats made out of a banana tree trunk or spider lily plant, cocunut leaves, and flowers, which is an old Thai tradition that is passed on from generation to generation. Thai people believe that making Krathongs with natural materials and floating them on rivers is a way to apologize to the mother of the river and would remind people not to pollute the rivers.

The Elementary’s Got Talent Show is an event that took place on the 18th of December, 2018. It was an elementary exclusive event that was first brought up two years ago by the elementary student government. This talent show showcased all the best talents and skills that the elementary students had to offer. The Elementary Student Government worked extremely hard to make this event possible, selling things in order to raise funds for this event. The purpose of this event was to relieve pressure and make students forget all about the stress of school work, which is why it has always taken place right before the major tests each year.
