Food Outreach with Giving Plate
AROUND THE BEND FARMS began as a vision about what agriculture could become. Agriculture has always been a communitarian and familyoriented endeavor, we're simply continuing that legacy. What we didn’t know was that a seed crystal would be formed during the discovery process, that would be so transformative. Our staff has been intently focused on the practice of building customized vertical farming systems that grow fresh greens. We simultaneously forge long-lasting relationships through teaching others how to grow food for people & families in the community. Our practices are integrated directly into the lives of community members. Our primary goal is to develop and install affordable, versatile indoor vertical farming systems in various locations within cities. Our unique farming methods connect people to the quality food they grow & eat. Grownology, a division of Around the Bend Farms, is delivering this mission to institutions of education, charitable organizations, budding indoor farmers, restaurants, and hobbyists, anyone who desires to grow fresh, healthy produce.
THE GIVING PLATE PROJECT, we built an indoor, climate-controlled farming system that they could operate year-round, without being subjected to the constraints of growing seasons. They loved the idea, within a few weeks of designing the system & planning, we were well on our way. During the build-phase of this project, a global pandemic threatened to completely derail it. Fortunately, we were only delayed by about a month. We successfully completed the vertical installation and harvested our first crop at the end of August 2020. The Giving Plate has since harvested lettuce and kale varieties several times over in the past 6 months. Veggies are being distributed in food boxes for their guests. We’ve also created an abundance of resources and implemented our training program so that the volunteer staff at The Giving Plate are able to successfully manage their Grow Room on their own.
