The Appreciation Pavilion Overview
The prompt of this project was to redesign a parking lot in the heart of Newbury street into a space for relaxation and shade. So, I designed the landscape into a place of interest for the Montessori Children School across the street of our site, providing shaded outdoor classrooms and open spaces for easy circulation. However, studying the setup of the John Hancock building, Trinity Church and The Prudential, I noticed a pattern of repetition and alignment. I then came up with three arc forms which also look like petals to form the pavilion.

The pavilion space uses shade to define a place of gathering and learning. The movement of people is predominant between commonwealth and towards Copley square. Furthermore, there is a sense of repetition and threshold in the site area which brings me to my concept of bringing people into my pavilion space either coming from Copley square or going into Newbury street.
Each Petal forms the path ways through the site connecting the road.

The Giving Tree Overview
Moving on from the Pavilion project we were asked to pick a children’s book and I picked The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. The Giving Tree is a book that tells a tale about a relationship between a boy and a tree. The boy loved the tree so much in childhood, but as he grew older the struggles of life played a part on their relationship. But no matter the struggle, the tree always remained loyal to the boy/man giving him materials to make his life beautiful.

I developed my concept from the giving nature of the tree to the boy. Newbury street and Dartmouth street are both affluent places with a mixture of colonial style architecture and modern style architecture. Looking at Copley square with the prudential, John Hancock and the holy trinity, There is a connection between all these buildings to the area. So I decided to replicate certain moves made in the buildings around. I imitated the pull out effect of the bays on Newbury street to form the cantilevers and pull back in the building. My interpretation of the book is the influence to my design.

The Musical Sound Box Overview
The idea behind the facade of my building was to harmonize with the surrounding buildings. For example, my building is divided into three; the business sector(a semi private area), the commercial, the hospitality. So I used a concrete wall finish for the first facade then a glass facade down the middle which is the main circulation point of the building. As for the last facade, I made it to look like the Berkley school of music. I accomplished this by placing long arched windows imitate the Berkley building style and to create a difference of light allowance between the retail on the first floor and the library on the second floor. Finally, I have a garden at the basement level which is open to the sky and collects water during rainfall and is reused in the building. I also have solar energy collectors on the roof above the electronic lab. The solar energy and water collected is reused in building climate comfortability and electricity.

The concept behind my building is an imitation of an acoustic guitar’s sound box and replicate the harmony in music. Sound is generated from the strings through the sound box into the atmosphere. It is also a response to the site and the buildings around it. This is why there are three different facades which relates to the mixture of the colonial Architecture style and modern Architecture style joined with a clear path(glass).

Axis Dance Company Overview
Axis Dance Company’s main goal is to revive the art of movement and physical expression in those that are disabled, thus changing our views towards the limits of disability. Axis’ core beliefs are centered around the philosophy of balancing Advocacy, Artistry, and Engagement. It was essential that these central ideals were reflected in the experiences and forms that the architecture of the building creates. Axis is more than just a facility, it serves as a societal hub where people can gather to explore new opportunities no matter their age or the degree of their ability.
