Berklee School
of
Music
Site: Back Bay Boston, MA.
Site Plan (AutoCAD and Illustrator)
The concept behind my building is an imitation of a guitar’s sound box and how sound is generated from the strings to the sound box and then rises into the atmosphere. It is also a response to the site and the buildings around it this is why there are three different facades.

From my concept I decided to place my practice rooms and the classrooms below grade with a bridge that crosses above into the entrance. I placed the retail on the first floor and the program begins to decrease as you circulate through the floors until you get to the auditorium floor which overlooks the Mass pike. Furthermore, the idea behind the facade of my building was to imitate the surrounding buildings. For example, my building is divided into three; the business sector(a semi private area) so I used a concrete wall finish then down the middle is the circulation point, I used a glazed wall to expose the lobby that goes into each floor. As for the last facade, I made it to look like the Berkley school of music. I accomplished this by placing long arched windows imitate the Berkley building style and to create a difference of light allowance between the retail on the first floor and the library which is on the second floor. Finally, I have a garden at the basement level which is open to the sky and collects water during rainfall and is reused in the building. I also have solar energy collectors on the roof above the electronic lab. The solar energy and water collected is reused in building climate comfortability and electricity.

The Pavilion Project
Site Plan (AutoCAD and Illustrator)
The pavilion space uses shade to define a place of gathering and learning. The movement of people is predominant between commonwealth and towards Copley square. Furthermore, there is a sense of repetition and threshold in the site area which brings me to my concept of bringing people into my pavilion space either coming from Copley square or going into Newbury street.

Site: Newbury Street Boston, MA.
In respect to my concept I decided to redesign the landscape to make it a place of interest for the Montessori school across the street of our site. The topography allows one to step down three feet into the site and make use of the space in several ways such as; private lectures, playground spaces or just a contemplation space. However, with the combination of the concept of the John Hancock building, Holy Trinity Church and the Prudential, and the concept of repetition. I came up with an increasing arc form repeated in two directions (the direction of the Holy Trinity Church and the Prudential). I did this in respect of those buildings as well as a way to pull people into the site which relates to my second joint concept of repetition. Repetition illustrates a vanishing point as you move. The pavilion is placed at the highest point of the site to respond to the height of its surrounding building and imposes its importance to the site.
