INTRODUCTION
President’s Review
SEPTEMBER 2022
Well a busy few months followed by some slightly quieter time, which is very welcome for all. HILS are conscious of the very difficult times that are affecting everyone and also those that are likely to lie ahead. We want to support our members and make useful, varied and current offerings. This can only be achieved by feedback from our members and by the hard work of the committee members. Please get in touch and let us know how we can assist you better.
I was lucky enough to travel to the Isle of Wight in July to attend a Southern Area Association of Local Law Societies meeting as well as the Isle of Wight Annual Dinner. Both occasions went extremely well and it was lovely to meet with other local law societies and share ideas as well as to meet with Lubna Shuja – the current Vice President of the Law Society who will take Presidential office in October of this year. Lubna will be the first Asian and first muslim President of the Law Society and the seventh female to undertake the prestigious role. It was a pleasure to get to know her and I look forward to working with her, SAALS, the HILS committee and all our members over the coming year.
The HILS Scavenger Hunt also took place in July and we had great engagement, so thank you to our members for that. It is always pleasurable to see people enjoying their membership with HILS and actively taking a part in what we do and what we offer. There is an article in this issue on the Scavenger Hunt so do enjoy viewing the photographs and reading that and huge thanks to The Hambledon Vineyard for the donation of the prize.
It is national Law Society election time. Various seats became available and voting opened on 08 August 2022 and remains open until 08 September 2022 so please make sure that you log in to view the nominees for the seats and cast your vote.
HILS are very pleased to once again be putting on a joint Conveyancing CPD Seminar with HW Conveyancing Searches. This is taking place on Tuesday 20 September 2022 at Eastleigh Football Club and includes talks from a Principal Planning Officer and Arbor Culturalist. For more information please see the HILS website under CPD & Training.
An important date for your diary is Wednesday 21 September 2022 when the Southampton Legal Walk is taking place. A variety of Hampshire firms are supporting this event and HILS will also be walking to show our support. The event is a 10km sponsored walk which supports free frontline legal advice agencies in Southampton and the Isle of Wight. Your support by virtue of sponsorship or just cheering on the route will be much appreciated. If you would like to find out more about the event or donate then please go to: https://londonlegalsupporttrust. org.uk/donate-today/.
I have been invited to the opening of the Legal Year which takes place on Monday 03 October 2022 and I am looking forward to attending and reporting on that prominent event.
As many of you will know HILS chosen charity for the year is Naomi House & Jacksplace. Please visit their website to see how you can support their amazing efforts. There are lots of upcoming events which you can get involved with: https://www.naomihouse.org.uk/events including a Winchester Half Marathon or 10k, the Great South Run, a Firewalk and a Santa Fun Run.
Social media engagement continues and it is very pleasing to see that people do respond to content. Please continue to connect and to let your colleagues know about HILS and also tag us in to updates. We want to reach as many people as possible who work in the legal industry.
As always, huge thanks to the committee for their tireless efforts. If you have any interest in joining the committee or any ideas for other types of events, lectures or seminars then please get in touch. ■
