Surviving Brexit with a little help from your friends ‘Get Ready for Brexit: Build your business resilience’ seminar at Rothamsted Enterprises

Briege Leahy Chief Executive Officer Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce

All three organisations, plus many others including council economic development teams, are determined to ensure that Brexit is not the disaster that so many predicted, that life goes on.

These are unprecedented times as the UK comes to terms with the tumultuous events of recent weeks. Confusion abounds and no one is quite sure what happens next as the country struggles to understand the practicalities of life after Brexit. One of the phrases we have heard time and time again during the long, drawn-out process has been that businesses are determined to ‘keep calm and carry on’. That is certainly what they have done and, while the politicians have been hurling insults at each other across the House of Commons and briefing journalists in pursuit of their pet causes, companies have focused on things like growth, investment and training. They have been an object lesson to politicians. The key thing that businesses have clamoured for is certainty and now that we have reached crunch point, they can at least start to see a way forward. It is important for business owners and managers to remember that they are not on their own and that there is plenty of help out there as they prepare for the future.

I was delighted to be able to take advantage of an opportunity to emphasise that message when, on Sunday 6th October, I appeared on the BBC’s Sunday Politics East television programme to discuss the regeneration of Stevenage Town Centre.

It emphasised the point that as we await the outcome of the general election, the business community keeps calm and carries on.

Hertfordshire employers win awards for their commitment to skills and young people

Ed Richardson, CBI senior policy adviser

Hertfordshire businesses were recognised for their commitment to young people at the 2019 Skillmaker Awards for Excellence. The Grove, at Chandler’s Cross, was one of 25 employers to win an award, earning commendation for the professional experiences it offers aspiring chefs and for the supported internships it hosts for students with disabilities and learning difficulties.

2019 Employer Excellence award winners Co-ordinated by West Herts College, the Skillmaker accolades celebrate the dedication of employers that are hosting work experience programmes to develop the potential of local college students. West Herts College Principal Gill Worgan said: “Hertfordshire’s Skillmaker Employers are making a major contribution to boosting the work-readiness of our young people.

“The experience has the power to change lives, opening up a world of opportunity for students and giving them the skills and awareness that local businesses need and expect. Offers of employment often follow including formal apprenticeship programmes.”

Danielle Michaels, Human Resources Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be part of the Skillmakers programme and to be offering young people opportunities to develop their practical and interpersonal skills. This award is a tribute to these students and to the staff involved at The Grove. It’s a true partnership.” Sarah Askey, Community Investment Manager at Osborne Property Services,

“The Skillmaker partnership between employers and West Herts College is a model of best practice that’s making a real difference.”

based in Hemel Hempstead, said: “We have been working with West Herts College on this project for four years. The experience is vital in helping young people make the transition from education to employment.” In all, more than 700 employers are partnering with West Herts College in this way, providing professional work experience for some 4,000 college students annually. It’s an approach which is leading the way and one that hasn’t gone unnoticed by national employer groups. Ed Richardson, Senior Policy Adviser for the Confederation of British Industry, said: “Productivity is a national priority for British business. The Skillmaker partnership between employers and West Herts College is a model of best practice that’s making a real difference. It’s inspiring the next generation and building a pipeline of workready young talent.”

SKILLS

Enriching lives and raising aspirations North Hertfordshire College is delighted with its recent accolade of being the top college in Hertfordshire for student satisfaction, and the fifth best in the country, according to a government-commissioned national survey of Further Education learners. Kit Davies, Principal at North Hertfordshire College, said: “Our aim is to be known as an exceptional place to study, where students are provided with an inspiring curriculum that develops the skills, knowledge and behaviours they need to be successful in their lives and future careers. The news that our students rate what we do so highly, is testament to the hard work of our amazing tutors and the positive, inclusive culture at the college.” North Hertfordshire College offers some of the best vocational courses in the UK for 16-to18-year-olds, higher education courses for those over the age of 19 as well as apprenticeships and other training programmes. It also offers part time adult courses for those seeking a career change or wanting to upskill in their current role. The college is particularly proud of its strong relationships with local employers,

including apprenticeships with Lloyds Bank and the Co-operative Group. The wide range of vocational courses on offer align with sectors of the economy where there is the biggest growth potential and significant employment opportunities. Employers help design the courses to ensure that the students are learning skills that will be relevant in the workplace. Many of the tutors have first-hand industry experience and the facilities at the college are industry standard. For example, Hart Salon provides excellent training facilities for hair and beauty students, and Hart

Kitchens includes a restaurant open to the public with kitchens that mirror what you would find in the hospitality industry. An important component of each vocational course is work experience, which is delivered in partnership with several well-known local employers. This provides an invaluable insight into the world of work for the students and many are often offered jobs at the end of their work experience – testament to the quality of teaching at the college and the hard work of its students.

“The wide range of vocational courses on offer align with sectors of the economy where there is the biggest growth potential and significant employment opportunities.”

Hertfordshire Business Academy Get connected with a visionary learning and knowledge network

SKILLS

Helping professionals achieve success in business As a young professional, Toby Stoddart who recently started a new role as Global Commercial Director for Clinigen Group, was encouraged by his former employer to do an MBA to help him understand marketing but also to provide him with an understanding of business functioning as a whole. He chose to do his MBA at the University of Hertfordshire. Toby said: “Hertfordshire Business School had certain ‘pillars’ of opportunity including the fact it offered the MBA in a way that didn’t invade my work life balance. I completed the MBA at weekends and much of the project work and research could be completed in the large Learning Resource Centre. The Business School brings together people from different walks of life and it fundamentally breaks down business at the ground level.”

At the heart of Hertfordshire Business School’s offering for local businesses is a public learning and knowledge network, Hertfordshire Business Academy. The Academy is an accessible business2academic meetup point for employers, business professionals, academics and students. It offers personal and professional development, networking, business expertise, project support, student talent and many other collaboration opportunities. Lynne Stevens, Associate Dean Corporate and Professional Development at Hertfordshire Business School, said: “Offering ongoing development opportunities demonstrates your organisation’s commitment to investing in your employees which improves productivity, staff retention and morale. As such, we are keen to support the wider business and local community with accessible touchpoints for business and management learning and support.” “With over 150 academic and independent practitioner experts based at the Hertfordshire

Business School, across the core business disciplines, there is enormous scope and variety in the content and agenda of the Business Academy programme.” added Lynne. Hertfordshire Business Academy’s ‘drop-in’ schedule of monthly learning events are open to all who may be interested in continuing their business education, or wishing to explore connections with local professionals, entrepreneurs and Business School staff and students. Monthly sessions are scheduled on Fridays, breakfast or lunchtimes, in a briefing or masterclass format and held at the Business school. CPD workshops and research seminars and conferences are additionally provided as open events throughout the year. The event schedule is further supported by a range of bookable Business Essentials, People Management, Personal Effectiveness and Leadership and Management short courses, either as half day workshops, or as extended programmes of study.

“I believe that success in business is achieved by the cohesion of its parts, when individually finance or sales (or most other functions) achieve too much influence, it can seriously harm the long-term success of a business. I also believe that it is thanks to the MBA that I now have the confidence to understand and influence other functions within bigger companies, even finance, the hardest module on the course for me. Hertfordshire Business School taught me to evaluate everything more critically. Overall though, I think the most interesting module was on entrepreneurship. Starting a business is scary if you don’t know what to do. However, the MBA made me really appreciate those who took the leap and the many who are now successful. The MBA opened up my mind to the holistic parts of the business to understand the need for, and the influence of, all elements of a business. I have since started a small Fulfilment by Amazon business just to see where that might go,” added Toby.

INSPIRATIONAL LEADER

Keeping up with the pace of change in the fourth Industrial Revolution There come moments in every business leader’s career when, successful as they may have been in their role, the time has arrived for a new challenge. For Morna Dason-Barber, that moment came in January 2019 with the opportunity to become HR Director of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), which has its operational office in Stevenage. Having previously worked at The British Standards Institution (BSI), she joined the organisation at a time of great change, not just for the IET but the whole engineering industry. Driving that change is what has become known as the fourth Industrial Revolution, which has seen automation, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things transform the way that devices and electronic systems communicate with each other. Morna said: “I had been with the BSI for twelve years and, although it is a fantastic organisation, twelve years at the same place is long enough and I was ready for a new challenge and looking for the next step in my career. “The role with the IET appealed to me because it gave me more responsibility and the opportunity to guide the HR strategy as the organisation adapted to the

changes within the engineering sector that are being driven by the fourth Industrial Revolution.” Morna brought plenty of experience to her new post at the IET. Her role with the BSI saw her work as HR Director, with responsibility across 14 countries, something that dovetailed with her new role at the IET, which also has a strong international element to its work. Prior to being employed by the BSI, she undertook several roles, including that of HR Manager at Lloyds Banking Group and as HR Manager within Jaguar Land Rover, where she started her career as a Graduate Trainee. She had also lived and worked in the USA and France. She joined an organisation with strong historical links.

The IET is made up from more than forty predecessor organisations that can trace their history as far back as 1854, and has grown to become one of the world’s largest engineering institutions with more than 168,000 members in over 150 countries. Its mission is to inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community, support technology innovation and help students and young professionals into engineering careers through its work with a range of educational organisations. Morna said: “The organisation, like the industry, is having to adapt to change and the IET seeks to communicate the role that engineering plays in implementing technological advances.

“The role with the IET appealed to me because it gave me more responsibility and the opportunity to guide the HR strategy as the organisation adapted to the changes within the engineering sector that are being driven by the fourth Industrial Revolution.”

“If you go back a decade, things were very different but the fourth Industrial Revolution has brought about great change. “For the IET, that has meant going through a cultural change of our own and my job has been to promote a clear vision of the changes we have had to make. “We have had to be more agile, we have to be more flexible in the way we work, and we have also sought to be more diverse, encouraging more young people into the industry, for example. “Our message is that engineering is a fantastic career to choose and that there are great opportunities, but people coming into the industry expect to find organisations like the IET working in a modern way. “The result of all the changes that we have been making is that the organisation is becoming more dynamic.” For the IET and the industry it supports, the future promises to be exciting.

INSPIRATIONAL LEADER

Passionate and outspoken business leader who seeks constant improvement One of the things that characterises inspirational leaders is the capacity to take a well-established idea and challenge it to improve. That is certainly the case with Janet De-Havilland, Founder, and CEO of Ware-based Pendragon Consultancy, founded in 2018 to service businesses and recruitment companies who engage contractors. The recruitment industry outsources contactor employment responsibilities by using Umbrella companies, which act as an employer to agency contractors who work under a fixed term contract assignment for a thirdparty business. Although a big believer in the idea as a way of helping businesses to recruit freelancers, interims and contractors, Janet argues that the industry has been bedevilled with problems, leading to a poor reputation. She believes that consultancy advice, supported by best practice compliance and a wellrun Umbrella company, should give workers access to their full rights and obligations in such matters as maternity pay, sick pay, holiday pay and employment protection. The problem, according to Janet, is that some umbrella companies do not give workers their rights and the industry has been tainted by the suggestion that they were only created for tax avoidance purposes. So, she founded Pendragon Consultancy to provide and educate the sector, as well as providing outsourced hasslefree, no-nonsense employment services for UK-based contractors and freelancers. It operates both as a consultant and also as an Umbrella company with hundreds of workers on its books in

everything from IT, Oil & Gas, Engineering and Cybersecurity to Driving & Logistics. Pendragon’s big message is that employment rights should not only be a right for permanent staff, but one afforded to a flexible workforce, too. Janet said: “After having been made redundant, I did not really want to help build another person’s company, so I decided to create my own business. I have thirty years of experience in the recruitment and contractor industry and, although I believe in the idea of Umbrella employment, I wanted to do things differently. “The Umbrella company sector has suffered from a poor reputation at times, but I believe that it has many advantages for companies and contractors alike if it is run properly. “There are plenty of advantages for both companies and workers. For workers, they only have one employer and if they work for several businesses do not need to pay several sets of tax, for example. “In addition, a worker’s CV will show just one employer rather than a whole series of short-term contracts, which can be offputting for prospective employers when they apply for further work. “For a company engaging workers, it makes sense to

outsource the employment, payroll and HR, thus de-risking your business. There have been 22 new pieces of legislation since 2014 and with more on the way in April 2020, The Good Work Plan and major changes to IR35 legislation making the engager responsible for tax treatment (NICs and PAYE) of self-employed workers. “If done properly, Umbrella companies bring plenty of benefits, and I am one of the people who has been consulting with Government on the Good Work Plan, and stricter enforcement as it seeks to regulate the industry.” To support her arguments, Janet can point to plenty of consultancy experience in Recruitment, HR, and more latterly, the Umbrella employment market. She has a proven track record of repeated success, transforming, delivering and interpreting corporate vision into highly successful and profitable businesses. Janet gained her expertise working for leading brands such as G4S, Manpower Group, Impellam Group, Lee Hecht Harrison, and Adecco Group and has been involved in start-ups, business turn-around transformation, and as an Angel investor providing funding and mentoring to

fledgling recruiters looking for their first chance at business ownership. Her team at Pendragon also has decades of experience in providing professional, tailored and compliant offpayroll employment solutions to contractors, consultants, freelancers, agencies and end clients. They have a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of off-payroll Employment, PAYE, NMW, IR35 and Tax legislation. The business notched up an impressive achievement within four months of being created when it received FCSA Accreditation, which demonstrates to freelancers, contractors and recruitment businesses that members are acting both professionally and ethically within the UK tax, employment and regulatory laws. Janet said: “I am passionate about compliance and best practice within the contractor Umbrella employment sector. Our success in being awarded FCSA accreditation so early in the company’s journey stands testament to that. “Professionalism, service and compliance lie at the heart of our business and being part of FCSA is recognition that we are upholding the highest of industry standards. “We have been growing rapidly and I am keen that we continue to grow and help businesses understand the advantages of using the right engagement solution for their flexible workforce, Umbrella employment is a great way to do that.”

PATRON FOCUS

Offering a

with an international expertise Moore Kingston Smith in St Albans became Chamber Patron last year and are delighted to have developed closer links with Chamber and the local community The business, a leading UK firm of accountants and business advisers which has been helping clients thrive since 1923, became a Chamber Patron a year ago and has found the relationship a mutually beneficial one. Partner Silvia Vitiello said: “We are big fans of the Chamber. They sit at the heart of the community and being a Patron is very much a two-way relationship. We can help them and they can help us and it has proved a good decision. “For us, it provides an opportunity to raise our profile and meet local businesses through Chamber networking events. We have learned so much through the presentations we have seen and the conversations we have had. “In an age when so much business happens online, the best way of developing relationships is often still face-to-face. Attending the Chamber events not only allows us to get the word out about what we can do but is also a listening process. “By listening to people from other businesses we can better understand the challenges they face. We have learned that many businesses share the same concerns about things like the skills shortage and the impact of Brexit. That informs the work we deliver for clients.

“The Chamber also encouraged us to enter awards, something we had not previously done in our St Albans office. We have always focused on making technology work for our clients and our staff, and we have had a special push with this over the last couple of years. “The Chamber also advised us to enter the Chamber awards where we won Inspiring Herts ‘Best Use of Technology’. We went onto the regional finals, won these and now we go onto the national final on November 28. As the only Hertfordshire business in the finals, we are proud to be able to represent the county in this national competition. We would not have achieved this without the encouragement of the Chamber.” Being a Patron has supported Moore Kingston Smith in developing its strong community presence, while also growing its international activities. The firm, which has more than 60 partners and more than 500 staff based in and around London, is a leading member of the Moore Global Network, which is made up of over 30,000 people in more

than 100 countries, who connect and collaborate in fields including accountancy and business advisory. The business recently changed its name to Moore Kingston Smith and is proud to have joined a network with shared values of integrity to help clients thrive. Silvia said: “This is such an exciting time; our big message is that we are still the same business, we are still in St Albans and we are still committed to helping our local clients succeed. “The change of name reflects our membership of the network, which we joined in May 2019. Being part of the network gives us access to a wealth of expert knowledge and insight from across the globe, which we can share with our clients. The network also offers greater growth opportunities for our firm and our people. “I know that the whole team at St Albans is keen to make use of our new network to continue to support our clients’ growth and development.”

“The Chamber encouraged us to enter the Chamber Awards where we won Inspiring Herts ‘Best Use of Technology.’ As the only Hertfordshire business in the finals, we are proud to be able to represent the county in this national competition.”

PITCHING FOR BUSINESS

Win that Pitch Hertfordshire author and pitch strategist, Dean Russell, recently gave a keynote speech at our business lunch in Knebworth. We asked Dean to share some of his tips for pitching for business growth and presenting with confidence.

Knowing how to present with confidence and pitch to win is essential to both career and business success. Over many years working with individuals, brands, politicians, philanthropists and start-ups, I have learned that everyone has a different view of what a pitch is. Often when I mention pitching, people conjure up an image of the Dragons Den

TV show and a one-shot opportunity to get funding, or worse - the image of a salesperson giving a hard sell. But pitching it is so much more than that; a job interview is just as much pitch as a complex tender process.

Let’s explore this further.

When writing my book, How To Win: The Ultimate Professional Pitch Guide, I wanted to explore what makes a truly successful pitch.

2. Storytelling. Since cavemen days, we have used stories to share knowledge and create memories. Storytelling is an essential tool for encouraging your audience to ‘see and feel’ how you will help them and ‘trust’ you in the process.

I realised that successful pitches follow a clear process, which I have outlined in detail in my book. I also found there were three common elements of any successful pitch: Unique Selling Point (USP) + Storytelling + Call To Action = A Winning Pitch

All of these topics along with guidance on how to decipher a brief, write a winning proposal, delivering a perfect pitch and more will also be included in the CPD Accredited Pitch Masterclass. Join Herts Chamber and Dean Russell, for the two-part, CPD Accredited* Masterclass in pitching for business. Taking place at Rothamsted Enterprises Conference Centre, on November 19 for Part 1 and November 26 for Part 2. The cost for both parts of this Masterclass is £150 inc. VAT pp. for members, and £190 inc. VAT pp. for non-members. There are just a handful of places left, so if you would like to attend please contact bookings@hertschamber.com

1. Your USP. It is critical to define what is truly unique about you or your organisation. This often is your brand but must answer the question of ‘why you.’

3. Call To Action. This is essential to convert a sale or win an argument. Remember ‘a confused customer doesn’t buy’ so be as clear about what you are asking your audience or prospect to do.

Dean Russell is the author of ‘How To Win: The Ultimate Professional Pitch Guide’ [Amazon.co.uk] and founder of Win That Pitch. WILLMOTT DIXON

Closing the Skills Gap written by Richard Davidson B.Eng (HONS) CIHM ICIOB Director

Construction is never very far from the news, with an almost constant focus on providing much needed homes, school places and badly needed investment in the NHS estate. It is against this backdrop that we make the call to attract more people to help us create these new communities and spaces. embrace greater use of robotics and virtual modelling. Construction is a sector where a job exists for many and yet the number of new starters is far from meeting our need. As an industry of problem-solvers we should take this as an opportunity to explore new avenues and find ways to attract the next generation.

The industry is suffering from a skills shortage, with the impact of not being seen as an aspirational sector for people to enter in the same way as law, finance or the fast growing technology sector. As well as struggling to find the right number of new starters, we are also dealing with an ageing population, with the number of people retiring hugely outweighing those joining the construction sector. It is therefore no surprise the growing skills shortage issue is never far from discussions when talking about the challenges in the sector – and this is across the board from traditional skills of masonry and carpentry, to those in project planning and finances. The breadth of jobs continues to grow as we

Right now, we are working harder than ever to implement training schemes that appeal across a broad spectrum of people – covering both the well-recognised trades, as well as bringing coders and robotics engineers into the sector. Our appeal and reach must cover as many places as possible, to bring the opportunities to as many people as possible. Working with school students is an obvious starting point, as well as informing their teachers and parents of the great opportunities that exist. As a business we engage in regular education sessions and have been rolling out Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) lessons which are well received. These are given by our people who can retell real life stories and act as positive role models, providing real insight to the sector and helping to improve the image of the industry. Recently we have been working with the lecturers and teachers at Oaklands College in St Albans to not only demonstrate regular construction skills, but also with film and media students who are producing training videos and literature for us to use on our sites.

As well as working to inform students, we are also working with harder to reach groups from across the community. In what started as a Building Lives Academy in Croydon, we have now started a national movement to roll-out hubs across the country linked to our projects that are upskilling hundreds of people. Each of these skills hubs are individually designed to meet the needs of the local population and will provide training, guidance and work activities to boost engagement, confidence and practical knowledge. From there, many start into full training programmes or work placements, making a step change from before attending the skills hubs. The latest two in Liverpool and Wolverhampton follow similar facilities set up in the last 12 months in Kingston, Winchester and HMP Elmley. The hubs continue to underline our purpose beyond profit approach to create a society that works for all, by equipping people less fortunate than ourselves with skills that will have a positive impact on their life. These skills hubs are leaving a legacy, opportunities, employment, self-belief and self-confidence

among many people in the communities where we deliver projects. They are proving a huge hit with local authority customers who regard them as integral to how companies deliver social value in their neighbourhoods. Our approach to training for the future workplace is continuously adapting, with new job roles and training being created to incorporate the use of technology such as virtual or augmented reality. We are now starting to train people to build the schools and homes of the near future within a digital environment. By doing this we can refine our techniques in a safer environment, copying lessons from the automotive sector where robots and computers do the dangerous and repetitive tasks. With an approach that encompasses education, training and embracing new technologies it feels that we are on the right path to promoting the industry in a more positive light. We will continue to focus on providing the best training, be innovative and adaptable, and I believe this will help us to close the skills gap and meet the need for new homes, schools and hospitals.

Our trainee management programme offers a structured, fast-track route to a management role. We are currently recruiting and you can find more information on our website - www.willmottdixon.co.uk/earlycareers INSPIRE

White Lion Square

Unlocking Welwyn Hatfield’s potential… Welwyn Hatfield has enjoyed an economic boom recently thanks to some of the UK’s largest companies, as well as an increasing number of start-up businesses, making the borough their home. Hatfield was recently listed as one of the Sunday Times’ top 20 UK ‘Turnaround Towns’ thanks to its impressive employment growth, which has soared 134% since 2009 – the highest of all the areas featured. But it’s not just Hatfield undergoing major regeneration, Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) has also embarked on an ambitious programme to develop Welwyn Garden City town centre and take the world’s second garden city into its next 100 years.

This will be boosted by the impending move of Hatfield Library to a prominent position in the square. The library welcomes more than 110,000 visitors per year which will only increase footfall to the area.

The revamp marks the completion of the first stage of the council’s wider town centre regeneration, following a major refurbishment of shops, offices and flats around the square. www.hatfield2030.co.uk

Town Centre As part of the council’s ongoing regeneration programme, backed by the Hatfield 2030+ Renewal Partnership, the new-look White Lion Square was officially opened in September. The £1.2m redesign was funded by Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), as part of a wider £6m LEP-funded investment in the town centre.

Councillor Duncan Bell, Executive Member for Resources, said: “Our economy is one of the key objectives in the council’s business plan. We are instigating and supporting

Demolition has started and the area will initially be used for temporary car parking, easing the pressure on parking space while plans progress for turning The Common car park into a multi-storey car park. High View Regeneration is not confined to the town centre. Plans have been submitted for a £45m transformation of the High View area, in south Hatfield, providing new places and spaces for people to live, work, shop and meet. The High View neighbourhood centre, which dates from the 1950s, will be redeveloped with brand-new shops and houses, including 19 commercial units for current tenants and new businesses as well as green spaces and play areas. You don’t have to be the biggest to be the best

…at the forefront of communication solutions for your business! Support UK have been a trusted provider of voice and data solutions and services for over two decades and we believe the key to our continued success is our ability to quickly respond to technological changes and customer requirements. Our reputation has been built on trust, reliability, technical expertise, agility and responsiveness. Earlier this year we made the decision to introduce a cyber security offering to our portfolio. It’s a natural stepping stone from our voice and data heritage and allows us to continue to service every aspect of our customer’s communication requirements. However, we believe that empathy and outstanding customer service go hand in hand and in order to fully understand how our customers feel about protecting their organisation, we decided to walk in their shoes and we embarked on a journey to become certified in Cyber Essential Plus, ISO9001 (Quality Management Systems) and ISO27001 (Information Security).

Before starting the process, we naively thought it would take a matter of weeks to complete but the reality was very different. The team has worked tirelessly over a period of nine months; documenting and streamlining company processes and creating policies for every aspect of our business, not to mention adapting and upgrading the equipment that underpins our organisation. You may be wondering, “why fix something that isn’t broken?” And the answer is simple; evolution is key to success and as Charles Darwin once said, “It’s not the strongest or the most intelligent of the species that survives but those who can best manage change”.

The outcome; a completely streamlined environment in which to service our customers and a definitive, clear vision for the future of Support UK. Obtaining British Standards ISO certification demonstrates our commitment to information security and to our future. It has enabled us to compete for and win contracts within the Public Sector, which require ISO certification as standard. Having won a tender to supply Southend Borough Council with a system to support 2000 users, we are incredibly excited about bidding for similar projects to continue to drive Support UK’s future growth.

Is flexible working your CSR super power

Look out

- it’s party time!

The festive season is fast approaching and many businesses will be arranging Christmas parties for staff. These events are great for building morale and celebrating the year’s successes, but …. Richard Gvero, Head of Employment Law at Longmores Solicitors, confirms the unfortunate truth: “What happens at the Christmas party will not necessarily stay at the Christmas party – sometimes with disastrous consequences!” Socialising at these events, often with the provision of unlimited alcohol, can lead staff to behave in ways that they would ordinarily regret and as the event is likely to be regarded as an extension of the workplace disciplinary action can result.

Employers also need to be careful; they may be liable for employee misdeeds because they are in a work setting, albeit a sociable one. Employers should also avoid discrimination or harassment traps such as insisting on attendance at Christmas parties (forgetting that Christmas is a Christian celebration) or not bearing in mind dietary requirements of religious groups.

on social media; these policies should be taken seriously.

I know it’s “Bah humbug” but increasingly Christmas party policies are put in place setting out the parameters of acceptable behaviour, including what can and cannot be communicated

Longmores Solicitors LLP

In short, we mustn’t forget that our obligations as employers and employees are not confined to the walls of the office and are certainly not suspended when we are in party mode. So whilst it is indeed the season to be jolly, don’t ignore the hazards! 24 Castle Street, Hertford, Hertfordshire, SG14 1HP 01992 300333 enquiries@longmores.law www.longmores.law

This can come as shock to those employees who are likely to view such parties as purely social. If the misconduct is serious e.g. violence or abusive behaviour, dismissal can result.

Today, employees want to do good things. They want to work for businesses who are openly and actively making a positive contribution to improving our shared CSR agenda and helps make people happier, more productive and loyal. One of our specialities is helping businesses create more flexible ways of working. In addition to the myriad of benefits that flexible working brings to your business, it offers you the potential to enhance your CSR activities. Here are some ideas: • Use Flexible Working to reduce commuting The average commute cost in the UK per person is £146 per month or £305 per month for those commuting to London. Add to this the carbon footprint impact, enabling your people to reduce their commute by working away from your office or through lift sharing, even one day a week, makes a difference! • Create a Volunteer Programme Do your employees get some paid time for local volunteer activities? Imagine how beneficial 1 day a year would be to your community. Flexible working enables people to volunteer at times when it really matters whether it’s supporting a local charity, becoming a school governor or helping children read in schools. • Pro Bono Could your business services be helpful to a wider community? Your employees could offer pro bono work. • Reducing Carbon Footprint Flexible working enables you to think differently about your business carbon footprint. Could you use your space more efficiently? Could working more flexibly than the 9 to 5 reduce the time people use travelling, reduce fuel usage and enable travel in less traffic? If you would like to explore more ideas and chat about how flexible working could benefit your business, please contact Liese Lord at The Lightbulb Tree on 07970 800064 or via email to liese@thelightbulbtree.com

ECONOMY

Good news in HMRC R&D tax credits report, but new policies needed The HMRC has recently published its latest analysis of UK R&D tax credits. Commenting on the report, Luke Hamm, CEO of innovation tax specialist GovGrant, which has helped businesses claim back nearly £200m for their R&D, said: “The good news is that the number of claims by UK SME businesses accessing the tax credits system has increased by 22% between 2015-16 and the end of 2017; 77% of all claims are from SMEs, and there’s been a welcome 15% increase in the number of first time SME applications. “The initial forecast of the 2018 stats continues to paint an improving picture, but now is the time to push harder. The Irish budget specifically identified R&D tax credits as a way of protecting the Irish economy from the uncertainty of Brexit and made a bold move to increase support in its budget for 2020.” “The milestone of £5bn in claims since the scheme began is now within reach, but the Government must develop policy to put rocket fuel in the process, rather than make incremental changes.

We urge the government to: • Increase the enhancement rate from 130-150% to really help businesses benefit from R&D, • More help for owner-managed businesses who don’t take a salary but are dedicating their lives to innovation through better R&D tax breaks • Support SMEs who work as a subcontractor for larger companies by allowing them to claim under the SME scheme • Improving the scheme to bridge the gap between R&D and Intellectual Property. Inventive companies need government help to commercialise their inventions. “These new initiatives will maintain the significant growth in small claims below £5K in benefit, which hit 9,000 in 2017.” Regionally, Luke said that London and the South East still submitted the highest proportion of claims (over 16,000 in 2017-18), whereas Wales (c.1800) and the North East (c.1700) were the lowest, creating an opportunity for the authorities to build awareness.

“There is a big opportunity for the scheme to boost businesses in these areas,” he said. Luke said that the Government should also be concerned that the RDEC scheme for larger companies is slowing down, and urged the Chancellor to introduce more generous incentives to attract larger companies to the UK, especially newer, greener industries such as sustainable energy, but also Fintech, AI, and Biotech. He said: “We are way behind our major competitors when it comes to government expenditure on R&D support, at 1.7% of GDP, well short of the government’s 2.7% target. Sweden, Austria, Denmark and Germany already invest above 3.0% of GDP in R&D. “The evidence that the UK economy benefits from tax is plain to see from this latest report, and we urge the Chancellor to take note and introduce in extra help for our most innovative businesses, large and small.”

Prepare for success in 2020 As another year draws to a close, now is a good time to review your business and set realistic targets to ensure that 2020 is a year of growth for your business. Taking the opportunity to review your business sheds light on how it’s performing in key areas. It helps you to identify improvements which can be made, encourages change and helps you to recognise what may need doing differently, in order to increase efficiency and profitability. Your offer A good starting point is to evaluate your offering and whether it still meets your customers’ needs. Which of your products or services performed the best this year? And do you know why this was? Do you need to make changes to your offer? There may be new markets you could think about entering. Also, consider revising your marketing messages to target more opportunities. You may need to conduct market research and survey your customers to find the answer to these questions. Your People Your business needs to have the right mix of skills and may need to invest in skills development, in

order to keep-up with the pace of rapidly changing technology and customer expectations. Are the roles of your staff defined and are management structures effective? Are your employees motivated to succeed? Your financial management Look at your finances to identify any trends this year and in previous years, including both peaks and troughs. This will help you to prepare for the costs you will face in the year ahead and help avoid any unwanted surprises. Start forecasting the best financial scenario and consider the most likely scenario, for your business over the next 12 months. Do you regularly monitor and track how much money comes in and goes out of your business? Do you need external support to do this? Your planning Do you know what’s working and what isn’t? You’ll put your business in a better position to

set realistic goals to work towards if you can understand your business from your customers’ perspective. Make use of the information that your review gathers to create a roadmap for the year ahead. The Growth Hub can help Hertfordshire Growth Hub offer support to SMEs and can guide you through the business review process, helping you gain a fresh perspective on your business and prepare a plan for growth. The Growth Hub can also help you to access funding, including grants to part-fund the costs of accessing external consultancy. Reaching out across the planet Since our last Inspire magazine the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce were privileged to host two delegations from China. was pleased to meet some of our members and listen to presentations from our guest speakers, Darren Jordan and his colleague Alice Swee Ooi; from Moore Kingston Smith, Patron of Herts Chamber, Nitin Dahad, from Herts LEP, and Andrew Elia, from the Arishi Agency, helped by Laurel Zhang, from Sherrards, who used her interpretation skills. On July 8th 2019, the first delegation of 20 people came from the Jilin Province, which is one of the northernmost regions and borders Mongolia to the west, Russia to the north and North Korea to the right. With a population of 60 million people it comes close to the population of the UK. The region has an extremely diverse selection of industries and is mainly known as a mining region for its coal and minerals; the capital Changchun is known as the Detroit of China due to its car production. The province also has vast plains of crop production and other industries such as petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, electronics and large cities hosting every conceivable sector you can think of. The delegation was headed by Qu Chunyu, who is the Vice Chair of the Changchun Federation of Industry & Commerce and

On Friday 30 August, the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce hosted its second delegation, in conjunction with Sue Du and Lipeng Song of the UK Shandong Association with government officials and businesses from the Shandong province of China. The delegation was greeted by the Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, Councillor Roger Trigg and CEO of the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce, Briege Leahy. The event was to promote bi-lateral trade between the companies of Hertfordshire and the Shandong province, which has a population in excess of 100 million people and various industries and is well known globally for its gem production, metallurgy, chemicals, oil fields and its associated industries, crop production and shipbuilding. We were pleased to welcome back our previous guest speakers and Khalid Mahmood, of Rothamsted Research, for an impromptu presentation that gave an amazing insight into the work that the

research establishment covers globally, especially China, with its enrichment of nutrients into the soil quality and therefore the improvement of nutrition in crops. Another important date in the calendar was the International Trade Summit on the 17 October hosted by our governing body, the British Chambers of Commerce. More than 500 attendees came along to hear expert opinions from trade commentators and attracted global participation from not only the overseas British Chamber of Commerce, but Embassies and High Commissions based here in the UK. The most notable and uplifting speech came from the Minister of Investment, Graham Stuart MP, who was the champion of British exports and trade, the overall message was that not even Brexit could damage our reputation for producing goods and services that the whole world needed. The Dunkirk spirit still lives on! How to win more customers and cut costs using technology Date: 28/11/19 Time: 08:30 – 10:30 Venue: Brickendonbury Estate, Hertford Price: Members £10.00 Non-Members £15.00

Join Herts Chamber with Hazem Megerisi and Paul Hodson of Tristar Tech Solutions, for a seminar aimed at helping businesses utilise their existing technology in innovative and simple ways to cut costs and stay ahead of the competition. Much of this technology already exists within tools such as Office 365 or their websites, and it is a question of simply using them differently to grow or improve margins. Tristar will give examples of how customers have made tremendous leaps both without any additional spend or alternative technologies which pay for themselves. In addition, Tristar is inviting Paul Walker, FnX Media, to show how businesses can generate more customers through video by using something as simple as a smartphone and a laptop. Video is a powerful tool but too often companies are spending too much money or spending money inappropriately on video that simply does not generate more customers.

Champneys Tring targets business conference market

VENUE FOCUS

Luxurious settings at Champneys Tring Set in 170 acres of rolling parkland, the Champneys Tring resort, with its health spa, has a long history and has been in existence since 1925. Now it has undergone a refurbishment which has included the creation of a new-look spa reception and improved conference space with a meeting room that can take up to 120 delegates, doubling the area that was previously available. For General Manager Robert Ledward-Smith, the work will

allow the venue to host many more business events and Champneys Tring has already staged a number since the refurbishment. He said: “This will allow us to dip our toe into the water for conferences and similar events. “We have held them before but this refurbishment means that we can offer much more and it significantly increases our offer. “The work to the main conference room has doubled our capacity for events and we are already seeing the benefits with an increasing interest in what we can provide. We have been working with a number of companies in recent months.

One of Hertfordshire’s best known leisure venues has undergone a refurbishment that has made it more attractive to organisers of corporate events such as business conferences. “Health and wellbeing is increasingly important for companies these days and delegates can attend the event and also take advantage of the spa facilities, which means that they leave us refreshed. “In addition, we have a number of expert staff on site, including a doctor and a physiotherapist, of which they may wish to take advantage. “Another benefit for us of staging more corporate events is that we

“One of the advantages of holding an event at the venue is that we offer so many health and wellbeing services on site as well.

are able to show people what we can offer, particularly people who perhaps did not know about us.” Champneys Tring has long been one of the most popular resorts for spa breaks in the country and offers a range of innovative yet traditional spa treatments. These include a manicure and pedicure salon and the Marine and Wellness Spa, which was the first of its kind in the UK when it was opened. You can find out more at www.champneys.com

Culture meets business

In 1940 sculptor Henry Moore moved to the picturesque hamlet of Perry Green, near Much Hadham in East Hertfordshire.

The artist lived in Perry Green, with his family, for the rest of his life. Many of his instantly recognisable bronze sculptures – found in galleries and public spaces throughout the world – were created in Hertfordshire. Today, his former home is beautiful a sculpture museum, Henry Moore Studios & Gardens, where over 20 of his sculptures are displayed in 70 acres of landscaped gardens and rolling fields. The Studios & Gardens are open each year from April until the end of October and

welcome thousands of domestic and international visitors. Visitors can explore six artist’s studios, showcasing Henry Moore’s techniques and the breadth of his work; or take guided tour of Moore’s family home which houses his own, fascinating collections of artworks, books and curiosities. The onsite gallery hosts yearly special exhibitions, often showing Henry Moore’s work alongside other artists including fellow sculptors Rodin, Hepworth and Gormley. In 2020, the writer and artist Edmund

de Waal will curate a new exhibition entitled This Living Hand, looking at the theme of touch and Moore’s artworks featuring hands. Although the sculpture gardens are now closed to visitors until the beginning of April 2020, the venue is still available for businesses to hire and offers a range of spaces ideal for entertaining and events. The Interpretation Suite in the contemporary visitor centre, designed by Hugh Broughton Architects and completed in 2016, houses stunning spaces for up

to 180 guests, with unparalleled views over the sculpture lawns and is the perfect venue for meeting, presentation or conference. The 16th century Aisled Barn, located in the centre of the sculpture gardens, is a complete contrast. Decorated with unique Henry Moore tapestries, specially commissioned for the building, the barn provides a special backdrop for drinks receptions, dinners, parties and ceremonies. Targeting investment where it is needed most Mark Bretton, Chair of Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), reflects on 2019 and what more we can do together in the New Year to deliver sustained and inclusive growth. Over the past year, the role of Local Enterprise Partnerships has been consolidated by Government with a mandate to develop Local Industrial Strategies that play to each area’s strengths. Now more than ever we have a critical role to play in championing inclusive growth across the country so that no community is left behind. Our key focus has been to produce a Local Industrial Strategy for Hertfordshire which takes our Strategic Economic Plan to the next steps and will help set the roadmap for a generation. Through this, we have one of the greatest opportunities to build prosperous and productive places and connect local people and places to economic success. The emerging strategy is a core element of the wider Hertfordshire Growth plan and plays to our significant assets in advanced engineering, creative industries, information technology, life sciences and smart construction. Stevenage is at the beating heart of a medical revolution thanks to the clustering of R&D excellence at the GSK campus to bring advanced therapies to market. The LEP’s investment has reinforced Hertfordshire’s position as a world class hub for the development of cell and gene therapies and bolstered its position within the Oxford-LondonCambridge golden triangle. This was ably demonstrated at our Annual Conference in October at GSK when Minister for Business and Industry Nadhim Zahawi MP announced that Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst (SBC) had been successful in its application to become a Life Science Opportunity Zone. Our visitor economy continues to thrive with the latest figures from Visit Herts showing the county hosted a record-breaking 28m business travellers and visitors in 2017, bringing £2.2bn value into the economy and supporting 40,000 jobs. Last spring, our Enterprise Zone, Hertfordshire Innovation Quarter, launched to market, leading the development of

32

Now with an expanded team operating from our new office at One Garden City, Letchworth, we are at a scale that enables us to be more responsive than ever to the needs of local communities by delivering strong, sustainable economic growth. LEPs were created to be business led, constructive disruptors for growth. Hertfordshire LEP with its key partners continues to be the catalyst in the county and our Local Industrial Strategy will pave the way to create even more opportunities for future shared prosperity.

“Our unique strength lies in our partnership with local businesses, councils, universities, and stakeholders, and in the detailed knowledge of our local economies.” 3 million sq. ft. of new commercial space with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation and is now home to six companies. The availability of a skilled and motivated workforce which can adapt to meet current and future business needs will be a cornerstone of the Local Industrial Strategy and therefore fundamental to our ability to improve productivity and inclusivity across Hertfordshire. We were successful in our application for a Careers Hub to provide concentrated support for 26 schools in North Herts, Stevenage and Welwyn Hatfield. This builds on the strength of our local Enterprise Adviser Network which provides valuable employer-led feedback on careers programmes in 105 schools in Hertfordshire. Over the past six months we have been working hard to develop a new skills portal, called HOP, that will give students, employers and residents wishing to upskill the opportunity to HOP into all the resources they need to make informed career decisions and build a future talent pipeline.

Our SMEs are the backbone of our business community. We have consolidated online and face-to-face business support in the county with our flagship service, Hertfordshire Growth Hub. Its new digital platform is set to lead the way nationally in transforming how businesses access support at the time of their choosing and provides everything they need to grow, create jobs and innovate. Major regeneration programmes are underway in our towns from Waltham Cross to Watford. And at a time of unprecedented pressure for future growth, we have invested in the right infrastructure, such as the A120 bypass to remove major congestion and alleviate flooding in and around the village of Little Hadham and reduce journey times. Across the county, there are tangible examples of the Local Industrial Strategy in action, where LEP investment has made a real difference to our people, places and businesses. We are managing over £309m UK public funds and overseeing the investment of EU funding.

I look forward to continuing to play an active role in the future direction of the LEP Network, helping to boost productivity and increase local growth in every region, as we exit the European Union. With the uncertainty for businesses around Brexit, Local Enterprise Partnerships have a key coordinating role in bringing together resources from a range of partners to help with future business planning. Hertfordshire LEP is working with London and South East LEP to deliver collaborative advice and support across all areas via their Growth Hubs to make our economy as resilient as possible. Our unique combined strength lies in our partnership with local businesses, councils, universities, and stakeholders, and in the detailed knowledge of local economies – LEPs already have Strategic Economic Plans in place and along with Local Industrial Strategies (LIS) we have market-ready ambitious plans to fuel economic growth and productivity across every region.

BUILDING CONNECTIONS

Building Connections

through the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce Woodhouse Workspace is a workspace design and fitout company on a mission. Our mission is to create workspaces that help businesses work smarter. Workspaces that support staff wellbeing and talent retention, increase collaboration and communication, and enhance corporate reputation. As a family-run business based in Hatfield, for over 40 years we have had the pleasure of working with many businesses in Hertfordshire, London and the surrounding areas. Most recently with two local enterprises who’re fellow members of the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce; Ocado and Hillier Hopkins. To support the new joint venture with M&S, Ocado took the remaining 25,000ft2 space in Hatfield Business Park. After extracting a detailed brief, Woodhouse designed the fitout of the new space as an extension of their HQ already on the park to ensure it was a consistent feel for the team whilst including a raft of different environments throughout to

enhance their collaboration and productivity. With the luxury of the whole building to themselves, a prominent part of the design is a restaurant in the atrium. This doubles up as a breakout, meeting and event space too and sits nicely behind the reception where subtle but clever branding has been incorporated. “Your people are very good, the design was good, the delivery was good…a strength of Woodhouse is being able to cope with all the changes.” Project Manager, Ocado

“ Your people are very good, the design was good, the delivery was good…a strength of Woodhouse is being able to cope with all the changes.” Project Manager, Ocado

Hillier Hopkins were required to relocate their Milton Keynes office and partnered with Woodhouse to design and deliver the fitout at the new address. With their HQ in Watford and another recent fitout in Central London, their new MK office had to be brought inline. With branding consistent, meeting rooms, a teapoint, new furniture and some ancillary spaces, the local team now have a workspace that is efficient and effective. “The people and the service at Woodhouse is their strength. I would be happy to recommend them.” Facilities Manager, Hiller Hopkins If you have an upcoming requirement for an office refurbishment or fitout please get in touch to ensure your workspace is a smarter one. sales@woodhouseworkspace.com www.woodhouseworkspace.com 01707 255300

we recognised that exporting packaging waste back to Asia and other continents around the world was the only way to ensure sustainability in the new globalised world. We recognised that we were importing goods in packaging, and that packaging should be exported back to countries around the world. Now we process 2000 tonnes a week of packaging materials, which are segregated at source by our 1,000 customers across South East England.

Six Top Tips

How to write the perfect design brief A well written and considered design brief provides your agency with the perfect platform to deliver a successful design solution. Spending time at the outset to clearly define your targets and aspirations will benefit both you and your designer.

1. Define goals: What do you want to

achieve? Be clear about the objectives. Clearly defining these from the outset allows the designer to constantly measure progress throughout the design process.

2. Set a budget: It allows the designer to work intelligently and within an agreed cost. They will also provide ideas about how to get the most from your budget and make suggestions about how best to utilise your spend. 3. Identify a target market: Knowing

your audience is vital to help ensure that the design hits the spot. What is the demographic and what do you know about them? Knowing this helps to ensure you target successfully.

4. Project responsibilities: Who is responsible for creating the copy and images and do you need to engage any other skill sets such as photographers or copywriters? 5. Provide specifications: What format will the piece take and how will your end supplier require the final files? Providing these details at the outset allows your designer to create artwork correctly and address any hurdles before it’s too late.

6. Agree deadlines: Clarify key dates for stakeholder approvals. Who will be responsible for sign off and will they be available when you need them to be? Having these deadlines in place allows your designer to plan workflow and ensure everything is where it needs to be, when it needs to be. Dan Branton is Director at Igloo Creative. The hotel, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, has undergone significant changes throughout the property, including the refurbishment of its dedicated meetings and events floor and the introduction of a new Open Lobby, creating space for guests to eat, drink, socialise or work away from their rooms. New audio-visual equipment has been installed throughout the hotel’s meetings spaces and, as part of the Open Lobby concept, a ‘To Go Café’ which offers snack food and drinks around the clock has been added. The hotel’s 140 guest rooms have also been upgraded with new carpets, chairs and lighting fixtures following the investment, which

General manager of Holiday Inn Stevenage, Ashish Arora, said: “We’re excited to unveil the results of our major refurbishment here at the Holiday Inn Stevenage. It’s a fantastic way to mark our tenth year in business here in the town and it’s great to be playing our part in the wider regeneration of Stevenage. “The hotel has been transformed, with more light and airy space created for our meetings, events and weddings offering, as well as the creation of our new Open Lobby area, which allows our guests to enjoy more space and grab a bite to eat, catch up with a colleague, or just rest and relax

with a coffee, whatever time of day or night. “We’re sure our guests and the local community alike are going to be blown away by our new look and facilities. “We’re now the only hotel in Stevenage to offer Starbucks Coffee as well as both live SkySports and BTSports in the lobby and, most importantly, we’re fully-accessible with DDA accreditation.” Owned by Queensgate Hotels and operated by Interstate Hotels & Resorts, Holiday Inn Stevenage, located on St Georges Way, opened in 2009. Herts Young Homeless

The property and construction industry sector has an obvious empathy with homeless charities and, alongside fundraising, there are many positive ways to get involved. MCP Property Services Ltd, a property business specialising in commercial and domestic maintenance work, demonstrated this with their invaluable support of Herts Young Homeless. Over the last 2 years, the frontline staff at MCP have donated plumbing services to tens of care leavers who have either moved into independent accommodation for the first time or require support to maintain their tenancies. Practical support has included fitting washing machines and educating young vulnerable individuals with vital home maintenance skills.

“We are proud to support Herts Young Homeless, our employees really benefit from directly assisting young people who have had a difficult start in life’. Anna West, People Manager. In addition, MCP has offered the opportunity of work experience to a Herts Young Homeless Service user wishing to embark on a career in the plumbing and heating industry. This represents a huge step for this 21 year old young man in getting his life back on track after experiencing a range of problems in his early life including homelessness.

MCP and Herts Young Homeless work collaboratively in a successful partnership to prevent homelessness and sustain tenancies for young people aged 16-24 within the county. Please contact marketing@hyh.org.uk if you’d like to discuss partnership opportunities for your organisation.

Business Advisor helps to start up

71 new businesses in one year

There is much talk about the number of ‘business starts’ supported across the county. However, it seems rare that the people delivering the muchneeded advice and support to these start-ups are in the spotlight. Leading social enterprise Wenta recently celebrated the achievement of one of their business advisors, Paul Lee. Wenta presented Paul with a Recognition Award for helping 71 people across Hertfordshire and South East Midlands to start a business over the past year alone – delivering real, direct impact into the local economy. In the past year Wenta has, in total, enabled 373 business starts across all of its support services which is, by far, the largest of any organisation in

Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. Paul has been an Advisor at Wenta for more than six years and has more than 20 years of experience in the business support sector. His career started in the construction industry and he later set up his own business supplying hi-vis clothing so he, along with the majority of Wenta’s business advisors, has had first-hand experience in becoming self-employed. He later moved on to a role at the Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce before joining Wenta.

Paul said: “There are many different types of entrepreneurs coming through at the moment, some with very innovative ideas and some with more traditional B2C businesses such as trades, IT and finance. “Social media and content marketing are both ‘hot topics’ as well as ‘Brexit’. Without a doubt, it will have an impact, but I’m sure that our thriving business community will embrace it. Wenta are here to help whatever happens anyway!” For more information on Wenta visit www.wenta.co.uk

Happy Birthday Vanarama would like to congratulate their friends at Autorama for recently reaching their 15th birthday! You may have heard of Autorama because of their top brands Vanarama (with the annoying catchy jingles and sports sponsorship) and their new car leasing brand Motorama, where not only will you get market leading lease deals, but you can also check your credit with their Eligibility Checker. We’ve enjoyed being an ongoing part of their success and are proud to be amongst their loyal suppliers. They are a business that started from humble beginnings in a porta cabin in Cow Roast near Tring in 2004. Fifteen years on and they’re based in Hemel Hempstead employing

over 230 people at their head office. In 2014 Vanarama took the bold step of sponsoring The National League (formerly the Football Conference). Recently the brand took centre stage at Wembley Stadium with Salford City and the class of ’92, celebrating their promotion with the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Phil and Gary Neville, and of course… a certain David Beckham. What’s been even more impressive to witness is the way in which the business has supported both national and local good causes on the back of their success. From the award winning MANarama

campaign that raised £150,000 for Prostate Cancer UK to their support for local basketball team, Hemel Storm. Vanarama has embraced its growth, helping good causes along the way. Key to Autorama’s success has always been focusing on what is best for the customer. Great prices are important and they are awesome at that, but they don’t compromise on treating customers fairly or providing brilliant customer service. We are proud to support such a great business and are happy to recommend them to our customers too.

Tips on renting your first office space “Finding the right space is crucial to the success of your business.” By Myf Plunkett Renting your first office space can be an exciting step, but make sure you’ve considered the below to ensure you grow and thrive.

Find the right location

Of course, the location of your office space is one of the critical decisions you’ll need to make. When considering a space, think about a location which will work for your employees, or if you don’t have employees yet, an area with a good pool of potential talent. You should also bear in mind a location which will be easily accessible for others such as clients or suppliers, so remember to check out the local transport links.

Consider the extras

When moving to a business centre, there’s more to consider than just your office space. What about meeting rooms, car parking, Wi-Fi, a kitchen area and so on? Many business centres have communal spaces you can enjoy at no additional cost, such as breakout areas to spend your lunch hour. So, make sure to find a centre that fits your needs. Remember to ask about the costs involved in any additional services.

Ask about the lease length

For your first office, you may not want to take the risk of a long lease agreement. You don’t want to be stuck in an office space if your business rapidly grows or if your circumstances change. Research flexible office space providers that don’t tie you into long leases.

Why GATWARDS of Hitchin has stood the test of time on the High Street Over its long history, Gatwards has seen many changes. Originally watch & clock makers, examples of their work is still evident today. When Charlotte’s grandfather, Willson, died at only 59, the business was carried on by his widow Sylvia until his daughters Anna & Lisa took over the reins. With ladies at the helm, the emphasis moved towards jewellery & today, Gatwards is recognised for fine diamonds & beautiful gem jewellery.

Established in 1760 in Hitchin, Gatwards is the oldest family jewellers in the UK having passed through 7 generations of the Gatward family.

259 years since opening, the 8th generation – Charlotte Gatward is now in the business as her mother Lisa Gatward & aunt, Anna Gatward take a back seat.

Amidst these challenging times for retail, the award-winning team at Gatwards have helped the family business stand the test of time as they all go out of their way to give every customer a memorable

experience from the moment they step into the shop. Whether a customer is looking for an important purchase to mark a special occasion or a simple jewellery repair, they will be made to feel that they are part of the family. The shop itself dates back to medieval times and with its wonky beams and uneven floors, Gatwards really is a “destination shop” with a vital presence on Hitchin’s High Street.

Having guided and advised our customers through 8 generations of the same family, maybe your grandparents or even great-great grandparents shopped at Gatwards!

We’re redefining town centres for 21st century Hertfordshire Patsy Dell Assistant Director Strategic Planning, Infrastructure and Economy Hertfordshire County Council Town centres must be relevant to the needs of our residents. We must adapt and transform our town centres in order for them to survive – and thrive. Our town centres must be inclusive to all, regardless of someone’s age and ability. Hertfordshire is adapting to a changing demographic, with a population which could rise by up to 175,000 by 2031 – they will expect, and we must deliver, a vibrant economy with a digital infrastructure capable of supporting people for future living and working. The Hertfordshire Growth Board has a pivotal role to play in the ongoing re-emergence of the town centre as a new type of sustainable community space. Creating spaces for which social interactions, as opposed to financial transactions, are at the forefront of regeneration plans is vital. Like many local authorities, we’re paying much more attention to the importance of the ‘civic realm’ – the creation of clean, tidy and attractive public spaces which are not constrained by traffic and inadequate parking provision. We are excited about the reinvention and reinvigoration of our high streets and town centres – this is among our top priorities for growth in Hertfordshire. There is no denying many town centres across the UK

We recognise that town centres have a key role in bringing people together, providing a focal point for all ages. And we’re determined they will be even more attractive for future generations – and that means moving with the times. have been suffering as people’s lifestyles, habits and expectations have changed beyond all recognition over the last few years. Research shows that footfall on the UK’s high streets has dropped by 10 per cent in the last seven years. We will continue to respond to major changes in retail behaviour, after online shopping has become a powerful presence with its hugely detrimental effect on physical purchases in stores. We want to start to reverse that footfall trend. Yet, we fully appreciate this can only become a reality if the offer to people from our town centres cannot be passed by. The huge change in the way many of us now work presents the opportunity for public-sector hubs to play a significant part in ‘newlook’ town centres, giving people an added incentive to visit. The offer to people must include superb flexible working spaces and leisure facilities, as well as a fantastic place to shop.

Specialist retailers – which often don’t feature prominently online – are a vital part of this offer, with the traditional high street chains no longer a sufficient draw in their own right. Food and health services - and cultural assets - can also all generate the footfall needed for a vibrant town centre. Hertfordshire County Council has launched a conservation and display programme to ensure treasures are preserved and easily accessible to the public, with 34 sculptures on show across the county. We are committed to improved solutions for parking, such as utilising cutting-edge technology, while putting in place sustainable and vastly improved public-transport infrastructures. The Sustainable Travel Town programme, which is part of the county council’s Local Transport Plan, shows our commitment to this. This initiative aims to reshape the local highway network and places

as a whole, with towns that successfully bid to become Sustainable Travel Towns benefiting from a range of measures to make walking, cycling and bus travel a more attractive and practical option. This could include new cycling routes and cycle parking, safe crossing points, wider pavements and bus priority measures. Every town in Hertfordshire is distinctive from another, varying in its economic performance, so any strategy for town-centre planning should and will always be based on local characteristics, strengths, culture – including theatres, museums and libraries - and heritage. A number of projects across the county to secure the future of our town centres have already begun, for example in Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead, Bishop’s Stortford and Waltham Cross. Most towns in Hertfordshire have some plans for regeneration or improvements. The proposed regeneration of our town centres – making them innovative and dynamic places for people - is both compelling and inspiring. We’re determined to make town centres the places our residents and their communities deserve as, ultimately, community must be at the heart of plans for their future.

Reasons to be cheerful in a challenging

retail sector

No one can deny that the retail sector is facing some tough challenges but all is not doom and gloom and the towns of Hertfordshire, large and small, are proof that there is still plenty of life in the high street. While trading conditions continue to be difficult nationally, stores and organisations in the county are still investing to make sure that the idea of visiting a physical store remains attractive in a world where online shopping is growing so dramatically. Take Stevenage as an example where earlier this year the borough council and developer Mace announced the signing of a major new agreement to work in partnership on the long-term transformation of Stevenage Town Centre. Known as SG1, the agreement builds on a vision for regeneration developed by the council over several years and seeks to create a new quarter of distinct character areas on the western side of the town centre. With a gross development value of £350 million, SG1 is one of the largest and most ambitious town centre regeneration schemes in the region.

The mixed-use regeneration scheme includes plans to create a series of new streets within Stevenage, as well as a redesigned, modern Town Square. More recently, an opening ceremony was held in Waltham Cross to mark the completion of the much-anticipated new town square. The Mayor of Broxbourne, Cllr Steve Wortley, unveiled a memorial stone to mark the completion of the scheme and the name ‘Queen Eleanor Square’, which was chosen by local residents. The construction of Queen Eleanor Square, which began in January, was led by the civil engineering contractor Danaher and Walsh, and was jointlyfunded by Broxbourne Borough Council and Hertfordshire LEP, as part of the Council’s wider regeneration scheme for the area. The total cost of the project was £1.36m, with Hertfordshire LEP contributing £678,000 from the Local Growth Fund.

Minister of State for Local Growth Jake Berry said: “This government is committed to boosting economic growth across the whole of the UK and ensuring every community has the support and investment it needs to flourish. “That’s why I am delighted to see the completion of the new town square in Waltham Cross, thanks to a £678,000 investment from the Government’s Local Growth Fund.” Other communities have been witnessing investment which benefits their retail sector, including Hatfield where the new look White Lion Square was officially opened by Councillor Roger Trigg, Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, in early September, following a £1.2m transformation funded by Hertfordshire LEP. The revamp marks the completion of the first stage of the local council’s wider town centre regeneration

programme, following major refurbishment of shops, flats and offices around the square. The High Sherriff of Hertfordshire, Lord Salisbury, councillors, council officers and Hertfordshire LEP representatives joined the Mayor for the opening, which also featured the unveiling of the historic Pearl statue, carved by sculptor James Butler MBE RA when White Lion Square first opened in 1970. Councillor Duncan Bell, Executive Member for Resources for Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, said: “White Lion Square is now an inviting community space that will drive footfall to local shops and businesses and encourage people to spend longer in the town.” Adrian Hawkins, Deputy Chair, Hertfordshire LEP, said: “We are delighted to see White Lion Square transformed with a vibrant new look and upgraded public amenities to help boost footfall into the town centre.”

Initiative to re-energise high streets continues to

expand across Hertfordshire

11 June 2019 - Your Town, a community initiative aimed at improving fitness and well-being and encouraging local businesses, has now expanded to more towns across Hertfordshire. It all began in their home town of Hoddesdon six years ago with “Give Your Town The Run Around”. After a chance meeting at a Herts Chamber event in 2014 “Your Town” Founder & CEO Mark White set off making things happens in his home town of Hoddesdon, bringing the idea to life. Fast forward a few years 2018 saw Rushden Town & Higham Ferrers be the first to take on a Your Town franchise, and now they are proud to announce another six towns are joining the Your Town Community, including Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, Watford, Waltham Cross, Stevenage and Hertford. These towns are all participating in Your Town “Get Togethers”, an initiative which brings the local community together to run, walk or ride around their town. The events are for all ages and abilities taking placing on or close to the High Street, supported by local stalls and entertainment. It forms a focal point for showcasing all things local and is a perfect opportunity for sport clubs, charities,

schools, colleges, businesses large and small to get together in the town and champion community spirit. This original idea has become the blueprint for a model of running, cycling and walking events being rolled out by local communities and councils across Hertfordshire. Mark White, the founder of Your Town, has spent the last few years supporting towns in delivering these events. Mark told us; “We are delighted and proud that more towns and partners across Hertfordshire are taking on this model. It’s a great way to connect local communities and bring energy to high streets.” “Your Town’s mission is to encourage more people to engage with their town and make them proud of where they live. We want to bring people together in town, in person, to connect with one another and strengthen their communities, meeting an important need.” Rushden & Higham Ferrers towns have already organised two successful sell-out running events in Northamptonshire so far this year in

a collaboration between local councils, businesses and community groups, raising money in for local charitable causes in the process. Ann Phillips, co-founder of “Running Buddies” said: “We were lucky enough to be involved with the NN10 area of Your Town Get Together almost from the start. The local team needed the expertise of people in the running community and we were able to give this support. However, it soon became something so much more. We’ve met new people and made new friends. We’ve been able to start building a community spirit that you can almost touch! We’ve now run two really successful events, one for adults and one for children, with more in the pipeline. As with all community events, some parts are hard work, but there is ALWAYS the payoff of absolute JOY on people’s faces as they take part in the events and talk to people they

wouldn’t normally speak to. For us, it has become an intrinsic part of who we are as a community group and we are very proud to be part of it.” Local supporters/partners and sponsors of Your Town include The Ocado foundation, Herts Chamber of Commerce, The Hertfordshire LEP, The Herts Sports Partnership, North Hertfordshire Hospital Trust, VolkerWessels, MSD, Dacorum Council, Hertford House Hotel, CHEXS Children’s Charity, Watford Housing Trust and many more.

How Welwyn Garden City is becoming a Modern Town (by Oliver Banks) Retail on our high streets is having a tough time. Barely a day goes by without seeing news of retailers struggling and we’re starting to see towns littered with shut up shops. One of the main reasons is, of course, the rise in online shopping which removes one of the main reasons for going to town – shopping for stuff. However, Welwyn Garden City through its Business Improvement District (BID) is looking to buck the trend by transforming into a town that is fit for the future. By fully embracing our technology enabled lifestyle – even encouraging it – Welwyn Garden City will remain relevant for today’s shoppers and tomorrow’s. By installing town-wide Wi-Fi, shoppers and BID businesses can continue their online life at full speed. It also presents the opportunity to gain insight of how people are shopping so the town can evolve and stay relevant.

As podcast host of the Retail Transformation Show, I’m continually seeing fantastic examples of how businesses and locations that welcome both our physical and digital worlds results in more shoppers and increased sales. In addition, by collaborating with the growing LoyalFree app, WGC BID will help people discover more about the town, presenting them exclusive offers to keep them coming back. One shopper remarked “it really has enhanced the shopping experience by providing the offers and discounts straight to my phone”. There are significant developments of the town centre planned alongside increasing housing across the district.

So, as WGC approaches its 100th birthday, it is well placed to continue to keep pace with the evolving world. In turn, this town is ready to not only survive our changing shopping habits - but, dare I say, ready to thrive. •••• Oliver Banks is a retail expert and helps retailers transform in our changing world – and a local resident. The Welwyn Garden City Business Improvement District (BID) brings together all the businesses of the town centre to make the town a better place to live, work and enjoy.

There are not many towns that can claim to have the level of public and private sector confidence as Watford, and this is something we are very proud of. Over the past six years over ÂŁ220million of investment has seen this town transformed; business supported the formation of a Business Improvement District, traffic has been reduced into part of the High Street and new design and paving creates a much more welcoming environment, the top area of the town is now pedestrianised, and features a completely redesigned pond and events space. Intu Watford has transformed the area formerly known as Charter Place - from demolition and chaos, a stunning new build

emerged. In September 2018 the opening of the intu extension kicked off with the launch of the new style, flagship Debenhams, quickly followed with a new 9 screen IMAX cinema, Hollywood bowl, and a host of other retailers and restaurants/bars, the most notable being the Florist. Watford is thriving and without a doubt, it is now one of the top regional towns. A combination of an excellent retail, leisure, and business offer, plus its excellent transport connections is enabling the town to make the most of regional position and

doorstep catchment of around 5 million people. As a town we embrace change and know this is vitally important if we are to continue to meet consumer expectations in an increasingly challenging environment. Watford is a town which offers a lot, whatever you want or need, we have it, whether it is meeting friends, a family day out or a quick pop into town, we know you will love coming into Watford. For anyone in doubt we would challenge you to experience Watford – we will surprise you!

Dacorum Community Trust (DCT) was set up in 1976 and its mission was to help the underprivileged in the Borough of Dacorum. Forty-three years later, DCT has evolved but its origins remain the same - a local charity helping local people in crisis when they have nowhere else to turn to. We believe that our interventions contribute to the wellbeing of local people and this in turn contributes to building a safer Dacorum.

DCT is very privileged to have the support of key agencies who help to raise awareness and funds for our work in the community. If you wish to discuss becoming a corporate partner, please call 01442 253 216 or email admin@dctrust.org.uk or visit www.dctrust.org.uk

How your business

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

can make a difference Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an increasingly important part of business life as companies seek to make an impact on their communities. From helping to raise money for local good causes to promoting sound health within their workforce, companies are increasingly playing their part in improving people’s lives. Methods of applying CSR include: Environmental efforts: all businesses have a carbon footprint and taking steps to reduce it is good for the company and society as a whole Philanthropy: businesses can practice social responsibility by donating to, and supporting, national and local charities Ethical employment practices: by treating employees fairly and ethically, companies can demonstrate their Corporate Social Responsibility Volunteering: Attending volunteer events and encouraging staff to volunteer, including giving them paid leave to do everything from tree planting to office work for charities, says a lot about a company’s commitment to the area in which they operate. There are many benefits for the company taking part, one of which is the boost they provide to reputation. A company seen to be doing a lot to benefit their local communities can only go up in people’s estimation. Although good public relations is usually not the driving force behind a good CSR initiative, it can be a useful side-effect. There is another benefit which is harder to measure. Research has indicated that people who volunteer, or support communities in other ways, feel better about themselves. For a company encouraging its staff to support good causes there can be a knock-on effect because happier employees make for more productive employees. All in all, Corporate Social Responsibility has much to recommend it for businesses of all types and sizes.

Cats Protection celebrating 20 years !!

We are part of Cats Protection, the United Kingdom’s largest feline charity, covering north Hertfordshire and are celebrating our twentieth birthday. We help over 500 cats a year, through rehoming, neutering and advice, and we are SELF funded and rely on donations, fundraising and

public generosity and valued kind support of local business supporters and the communities we serve. Sadly every year brings increased challenges and need for our services and support and every year brings different challenges as in any organisation. Our biggest challenges are around public education and neutering to prevent unwanted or neglected cats and the kittens. We deal with domestic cats as well as feral cats which are ideal if you are looking for rodent control. We have placed these in factories, warehouses, industrial food storage areas, stables etc. Often the mice and rats move out when the cat moves in! We are all volunteers and give many hours a week to help both people and cats, rescuing cats from difficult situation, vet runs, visiting needy families and much more and we hope that we can count on your continued support in 2020.

was suffering from severe back pain because he was sleeping on old pallets. He was extremely depressed and had a serious eye condition. He cried during his interview. Some months later, he visited us. He seemed much more at ease. He had undertaken cognitive behavioural training which helped turn his life around. He now has regular contact with his ex-partner and children and had just got a new job. He said that the time we had taken listening to him had restored his dignity and been instrumental in him seeking help with his mental health.

Why are we celebrating at the British Red Cross? In 2020, we’ll be 150 years old!

Since 2012, The Gifted has been delivering amazing youth-based projects, offering prevention and intervention to young people in need of a chance. Since June 2016 The Gifted has impacted 587 vulnerable young women aged 11 and 18, through The Butterfly, supporting them to increase their self-esteem, communication skills and create brighter futures. Disadvantage appears in different forms, from poverty, to abuse and low aspirations. We work with individuals and multiple stakeholders to accept referrals onto our projects, for individuals often facing challenging life circumstances or restricted from progression. Hertfordshire is a county of assumed affluence, yet there exist areas of deep deprivation. Many of the young women we support in these areas, include those who are isolated, in care or have mental health problems. They influence the projects we design and shape the work we do.

Reducing Loneliness - The Gifted

Dacorum Community Trust

In 2018, Dacorum Community Trust handled 400 cases for families and individuals suffering from extreme poverty who were unable to help themselves and had nowhere else to turn to for help. DCT clients present with complex, multiple problems, including homelessness, domestic violence, debt, mental or physical illness, addictions, ex-offenders, benefit suspensions and delays, particularly since the introduction of universal credit. Mental health is a major factor, either as a primary cause or because of complex problems. DCT has developed strong links with the local statutory and voluntary sector organisations. These growing networks enable us to reach more clients in need and refer them to wider community support. As an independent charity, DCT can respond immediately and this is often critical in preventing a crisis escalating to the emergency services. For example: A single mother of three young children whose universal credit was delayed was in great distress because she had no gas or electricity. We issued her with an emergency energy voucher for £30. She was overcome with relief and just wept. A victim of domestic violence in temporary accommodation with his teenage son had no means to cook. Within 48 hours, DCT has an electric cooker in place. He was very grateful and commented, ‘now we can have decent meals and eat together like a normal family.’ DCT purchased a bed and other essential items for a man in temporary accommodation who

The International Red Cross was inspired by Swiss businessman, Henry Dunant’s belief that compassion for people should be given without judgement. He also had a vision of having trained volunteers around the world ready to provide impartial help to relieve the suffering. That vision has been achieved with Red Cross Societies worldwide. The world today looks very different but the work that we do remains critical to the lives of people in the UK and across the world. We are marking our 150th anniversary by celebrating and encouraging everyone to get involved and we want you to join us! How could you help us celebrate our 150 years? • Would your company make us ‘Company of Choice’ for our year of celebration? • Would you like to sponsor our 150 Celebratory Dinner? • Would your company organise a fundraiser for us based on a ‘150’ theme? • Would your company join us for a Go Karting evening: 150 laps? Please get in touch: Cathy Curtis, Senior Community Fundraiser, Hertfordshire ccurtis@redcross.or.uk 07921 941394

The Gifted, funded by The Co-op Foundation worked with young people to find a develop a project that would reduce loneliness in young people by helping them to connect with one another. The Butterfly has grown to develop ‘Butterflyettes’, a mentoring and life skills training scheme, moving towards work. In 2018, we received funding from The Heritage Lottery, for The Clothmaker’s Wings to explore the Textiles heritage of Hertfordshire, centred around straw plaiting, embroidery and linen work. 36 Girls participated, creating a stunning collection, exhibited at the Lowewood Museum in Hoddesdon and creating a short film, entitled, Remember Me (Roaming Films). It has been put forward for an award and has enabled young women from the county to become community leaders and social entrepreneurs. We are very grateful to The Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce for their ongoing network support and £500 donation in May. This has helped us grow our capacity and give more girls and women positive role models and hope. We welcome any opportunities to share our vision and align with the priorities of the local business sector, seeking to make an impact, through partnership. Providing a safe haven for neglected, unwanted and abandoned animals

The animal rescue charity was founded in 1990 by mother and daughter Jan Rose and Fiona Piggott after taking in strays from the local police dog pound. News travelled fast and soon waifs and strays where being left on their doorstep. Desperate funding and a more suitable home for these animals initiated the creation of the Charity, now affectionately known as “the small charity with a big heart” . Our aims and objectives are as follows: To provide a safe haven (sanctuary) for neglected, unwanted and abandoned animals and wherever possible to treat and re-habilitate all animals including wildlife; sanctuary as we see it being a place of protection; a refuge. Our aims are: • To overcome the pain and suffering previously endured, with kindness and understanding. • To treat animals with respect and compassion. • To be aware that because animals cannot speak for themselves we must be their voice.

BUILDING CONNECTIONS

We can’t fly without you! The Inspiring Hertfordshire Awards 2019 took place in June at the magnificent St Albans Cathedral. We celebrated with over 300 attendees and the room was filled with excitement as all of the finalists, judges and sponsors gathered to find out who would be crowned the winner of not only each of the 19 categories, but also the three Special Recognition Awards; including the overall Inspiring Business of the Year. But by far, the most inspiring speech of the evening was given by Kate Oliver, an Ambassador of Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust (EHAAT) who bravely told her story and caused more than a few to shed a tear. Since then, we have heard the brilliant news that Kate has been offered an amazing opportunity to work for TheAbilityPeople (TAP) since a member of their staff was sitting amongst the

audience and was also inspired by Kate’s speech. Here is what Kate had to say: “Up until October 2010 I was juggling a career as a Croupier in a top London Casino with a passion for sports including football, netball and running. I was then involved in a car accident where I suffered a traumatic brain injury leaving me in hospital for a year. This resulted in me being left with paralysis on one side of my body from which I am still recovering all these years later. It has been a very long and difficult journey, but it has moulded me into the person I am today. I am passionate about helping to raise funds for the charity Essex & Herts Air Ambulance who saved my life on that fateful day,

and one of the ways I do this is by giving speeches about my experience at corporate events. By speaking at the Hertfordshire Chamber’s Inspiring Herts Awards event about why EHAAT are so special to me, where Steve Carter was listening in the audience, in his words, he knew that I had to become a member of the team at TAP. After meeting with Steve and Liz and learning all about the ethos of TAP I knew it was

something I wanted to be a part of and if I can help to educate others about people living with disabilities and their importance in the work place, then I will feel as is if I am achieving something significant.” Natasha Robertson, Fundraising Manager at EHAAT said: “I am so thrilled for Kate with her new role at TAP. Kate is a great friend of the Charity and an amazing Ambassador for EHAAT.”

Essex & Herts Air Ambulance, unlike NHS emergency services, is a charity providing a free life-saving Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) for the critically ill and injured of Essex, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. Each critical care team consists of a pilot and co-pilot, a pre-hospital care doctor and a critical care paramedic who can be rushed to the scene of an incident with life-saving support equipment to deliver advanced clinical care that is normally only found in the hospital emergency department. Once stabilised, the patient will be conveyed by air or land to the most appropriate hospital for their needs. It costs £9 million every year to cover all charitable costs and aircraft operations. Without access to National Lottery funding and with only limited support from the Government, we rely upon the generosity and goodwill of the people and businesses of Essex and Hertfordshire to remain operational and keep saving lives...we can’t fly without you!

THE LAST WORD

Q Why did you join the Chamber? Primarily to strengthen our presence in the local marketplace. We have built up a strong client base in London and nationally, and we felt that it was time to concentrate more on gaining traction with the many great businesses closer to home.

Q What you do get from it? Our membership has enabled us to network with like-minded people and has successfully opened doors that otherwise would have been difficult to access. We have made numerous useful contacts since joining the Chamber and hope to continue doing so.

Paul Edwards Sales Director KGK Creative Ltd Q What do you do? We are a creative design agency that specialises in branding, events, point of sale and digital. Our designers have a wide range of experience in the Construction, Retail and Financial sectors. We also have expertise in large and small format print.

Q Who do you work for? I work for KGK Creative Ltd. My background was originally in the print industry before I moved over to the design side. As a fullservice design agency, KGK Creative Ltd offers a wide range of solutions and we work with a very diverse clientele. No working day is the same, and I relish meeting new people and exploring ways in which we can work together.

Q How has it helped your business network?

We recognise the importance of having a network of contacts with a wide range of expertise in different areas to ourselves and the Chamber has helped us enormously in this respect. It has led to us meeting people from businesses offering support and professional services. We are firm believers in reciprocal business, so this is an advantage to us.

Q What advice would you give someone starting out?

Firstly, make sure that you surround yourself with great people. That way you can be confident that you can deliver what a client is asking for, on time and on budget. Secondly, never be afraid to listen to experts within your field and learn from them. Their knowledge has been obtained over many years. Thirdly, don’t be frightened to embrace new technology and ideas, or you will quickly find yourself behind the curve.

Q What do you think is the

biggest challenge affecting running and growing a business?

Never forget the customer. It can be easy to concentrate on the bottom line and be inward looking. As a design agency, we recognise that any company’s brand is crucial to how it is perceived by its clients and, consequentially, is fundamental to its success or failure.

Q What support do you want from government?

We would look for continued government investment in the creative arena. Design talent is crucial, not only to our business, but to the country as a whole. With Brexit looming we would welcome stability and clarity to enable us to continue to grow during what is a difficult business climate.

Q How confident are you

your business will grow in 2019/2020?

We are cautiously optimistic that we are in a strong position to grow going forward. We have the people and the infrastructure in place, and we are working hard to expand our client base. External factors are always difficult to predict, but we are confident that we are flexible enough to push the company into new sectors and marketplaces where necessary.
