By John Woodruffe Head of International Trade and Policy
The British Chambers of Commerce held their Global Annual Conference in June. The BCC’s new Director General, Shevaun Haviland, set out her thoughts on the action needed to help firms and communities rebuild following the pandemic. She also stressed the key steps needed to boost UK trade, unblock the blockages in skills training and build a greener, more sustainable economy to meet the target of net zero by 2050. Trade and export are very much at the heart of her future vision for the country and if we are to succeed, Shevaun has argued that government and businesses must work together behind a shared UK trade and investment strategy. However, she warns of a high risk of redundancies and insolvencies and the recovery will naturally be uneven across different sectors, locations and demographics and that continued government support is vital. Finally, she paid tribute to the role that accredited Chambers of Commerce have made to help businesses during this difficult
