NEWS Legat Owen celebrate 20 years in Albion House, Chester

This November marked Legat Owen’s 20th anniversary in Albion House, Chester.

Legat Owen is an established firm of chartered surveyors founded in Chester in 1986. Over the following years, the practice steadily expanded, outgrowing their initial premises on Goss Street to move to Castle Street in around 1989.

In 2004, Legat Owen made the significant decision to move their offices to Albion House. A series of extensive building works and renovations were carried out in 2007 to ensure the office space was perfectly suited to their needs.

Albion House has an amazing history. Originally, it was part of Park House located on Lower Bridge Street, built around 1717 as a classic early Georgina town house. In 1818 it was converted into the Albion Hotel and ballroom.

The new law to prevent workplace harassment, expected to take effect under amendments to the Equality Act, will require employers to proactively address and prevent workplace harassment, particularly sexual harassment. Employers should be warned that non-compliance could lead to compensation claims, reputational harm, and whistleblowing incidents, particularly if harassment policies, reporting mechanisms, and training are inadequate.

The reforms also introduce ‘day one’ rights - granting employees immediate protections such as sick pay and parental leave, with the need for businesses to provide formal reasons for any dismissal, subject to a probation period. All of this means leaders will need robust policies to manage requests and meet new regulatory standards.

Businesses should prepare now to stay ahead of these changes. Start by updating employment contracts, particularly for zero-hour workers, to meet new rules on flexibility and fair pay. Implement anti-harassment policies, set up reporting channels, and train staff.

Given the complexity and potential legal repercussions of these changes, seeking expert employment law advice is essential. Professional guidance not only ensures compliance - it protects businesses by fostering a fair, legally sound workplace in a rapidly evolving legal environment.

The ballroom at the Albion Hotel, today known as Albion House and Legat Owen's offices, was the largest in Chester during its time. The original vaulted alcotrave ceiling remains resplendent in its glory above the office and the original sprung dancefloor still exists beneath the carpet.

In the late 1960’s, Albion House became a dancehall known as Clockwork Orange. Many of Legat Owen’s clients have mentioned that this was the best dance floor in Chester where all the great bands would play including Status Quo and the Bee Gees!

In 2015, Legat Owen expanded further with the acquisition of Nantwich-based Lamont Commercial, strengthening their core business.

Matthew Pochin, Director, Legat Owen commented:

“Legat Owen has an extensive client base spanning the UK yet remains incredibly proud of Chester and passionate about our work in the City. Over the years we have been involved in a number of high-profile projects in Chester, notably, the development of Chester Business Park from conception to our ongoing agency and management roles today; the development of the Greyhound Retail Park; the acquisition of County Hall on behalf of Chester University and simultaneous disposal of the HQ building.”

Legat Owen look forward to their next milestone in 2026 when they will celebrate their 40th Birthday!
