A Note From The Director

For over 4,000 children, teens and adults, this summer included registering for the Summer Reading Program, visits to the libraries or the bookmobile, and many hours of reading. Over 16,962 books were read, and 6,651 hours were spent reading. We say a very special thanks to the Friends of Berkeley County Library for providing the reading program prizes, including a T-shirt for every child ages 3 through 11 who completed their reading logs and turned them in. The Friends made possible the various prizes for participating teens and special prizes for participating adults. Without our Friends, we would not have a Summer Reading Program. And, for the first time, various sponsors throughout the Lowcountry donated gift certificates so that participants and their families could enjoy free food and free passes to events, games, and entertainment. Are you a member of a book club? If so, contact the library. We have a new service beginning this fall. We are putting together book club reading kits and plan to create approximately 50 kits based on the titles your group is reading. Each kit will contain six copies of the book, a reading discussion guide, and a short biography of the author. We are planning a mix of fiction and non-fiction, including mysteries, romances, family sagas, literary classics, history, memoirs, biographies, and best sellers. These kits can be borrowed for six weeks by any adult who has a library card in good standing. Contact us at our website, www.berkeleylibrarysc.org or drop by one of our seven locations and give us some recommendations using one of our “We’re Listening” cards. Please include the phrase “Recommended titles for books club kits” at the top of the card. We hope to hear from you! ~Donna Worden, BCLS Director

Beloved Daniel Island Staff Member Tim Boyle Is Promoted to Branch Manager Tim Boyle was born in Norfolk, and grew up in Tidewater, VA. His childhood was spent hanging out in his father’s bookstores, and his teen years working in them. Tim earned a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at William and Mary, then spent a few years teaching and traveling in Asia, where he learned to speak a little Chinese and Indonesian.

Tim Boyle

After pursuing a culinary degree, Tim cooked professionally for a while, and then returned to the book world at Barnes & Noble, where he was a manager for about ten years. Tim joined the Berkeley County Library System in 2006, working first at the Hanahan branch, and then coming to Daniel Island with the opening of the branch in 2007. While working at the library, he also attended grad school classes at the University of South Carolina in Library and Information Science. He received his Master’s degree last summer. Tim still enjoys cooking, especially Asian dishes, but his audience now is usually limited to his wife of 23 years, Deborah, and his 9-year-old daughter, Maura.

This quarter was so phemonenal there are two spotlights! The Employee Spotlights go to Claire at the Sangaree Library and Margery at the Goose Creek Library. Claire was nominated for an outstanding job of stepping up while the library has been short-staffed. She’s continued to expand her skills and knowledge, and the Sangaree Library depends on her as an important member of the team. BCLS would like to extend a congratulations to Claire for her promotion to Hanahan Library’s new Reference Assistant. Claire will be missed at Sangaree, but we are so excited to see her grow in this new role. Margery lives out the BCLS tagline, “Inform. Inspire. Illumniate,” each time she steps foot through the library doors. As a Reference Assistant, Margie makes a point of finding and providing the very best information to not only the library customers Claire that visit her desk, but to her peers as well. Her willingness to go above and beyond is appreciated by all who interact with her, and her love to serve others is apparent in each exchange she makes.

Margery

2

Like many, Margie has a full plate when she comes to work, from special projects to time at the desk, but she does each task with such grace, willingness, and professionalism that is such an inspiration. Margie’s smile, words of wisdom, and kind spirit can illuminate any room she is in, which in turns makes the library feel like a home to customers and peers. Her dedication to the BCLS family, the Berkeley County community, and to the library profession does not go unnoticed, and is truly appreciated.

Berkeley County Library System | Open Up! Fall 2015

St. Stephen Wins Big with New Library and New Manager The Berkeley County Library system is pleased to welcome Donna S. Rodin as the new St. Stephen’s branch manager. Donna comes to the Berkeley County Library System after almost twenty years of work in the local public schools as a Media Specialist, three years at Cainhoy Elementary, and 15 years at Timberland High, and receiving her Masters of Library Science in 1997.

Photo provided by Jeff Peterson, JWPetersonCharleston.com

Donna also worked a short time at the Jamestown Branch of the Public Library in 1989. Donna's resume also includes working at the Charleston Naval Shipyard as a sheetmetal mechanic for around 13 years, two of those were spent managing their Transition Library. The Transition Library was focused on providing information and services to help workers gain new employment when the Shipyard closed. In her spare time, she writes a column for the Berkeley Independent entitled “Jamestown Loop.” Donna's ties to the community and extensive work experience in the library industry provides for a perfect fit for the upcoming opening of the newly expanded St. Stephen Library.

The St. Stephen Public Library is one of the oldest library branches in the Berkeley County Library System and was established in 1955. A newer building was used in 1959. Its current location, on Main Street in Saint Stephen, is soon to be changed. The new branch, a renovated historical building in the community, is set to open in September 2015. The new St. Stephen library will be sharing the space with the magistrates court. The library will feature more spacious areas for teens and adults, as well as ten computers for the adults and a common room for Storytime and other events. The Berkeley County Library System looks forward to the new location and the ability to serve a greater number of customers.

BCLS Gets a New Look The Berkeley County Library System is shaking things up with their marketing. The first step was getting feedback from the community. The second step was hiring a marketing coordinator who reached out to that same community and got them involved in revamping the look. In 2013 the Berkeley County Library System hosted a series of county-wide discussions asking community leaders and residents what they wanted to see from the library in the coming years. Surprising the conclusion from these discussions was the fact that the community as a whole did not know half of the services the library offered at that time, not to mention having opinions on offering new services. Instead of focusing all their time and resources on adding new services, the library decided to regroup and hone in on what they currently offered and making sure the community knew about all their services. Thus the 2013-2016 Strategic plan was drafted with this as its primary focus. A major factor of the Strategic Plan included hiring a Marketing and PR Coordinator, historically a position that most smaller library systems do not offer. A year, many budget meetings, and several interviews later, the position was filled by local Moncks Corner resident and College of Charleston alumni, Kristen Lanier. A casting call was announced for the community to join us at a professional photo shoot this past May so the library could update their marketing collateral with images of real library customers in real Berkeley County Libraries. The results were amazing and the support from the community was heartwarming. These images will be used on the library’s webpage, social media, and printed marketing collateral. Thank you to our photographers, Jeff Peterson of JWPeterson Photography, and Nita Blount, and to all the volunteers who came out to help give BCLS a new look.

You too can be the next face of the Berkeley County Library. Due to all the support, the library will be scheduling another photo shoot this Fall. See our website for more details. September | October | November | December 2015 3

Sangaree Library

The Community Garden Springs in Sangaree The Sangaree Library is excited about its Community Garden Project, which it has been able to do as a result of a Community Grant from Home Depot and the support of the Sangaree Special Tax District. The library's goal is to provide a positive opportunity for community members of all ages to interact with each other while giving back to their community.

This garden project seemed like a perfect opportunity to give back while also providing a chance for the teens to interact with other local residents in a positive way. The original plan w to assemble, fill and plant three raised beds with the help of community participants on Saturd June 6, 2015. The library was amazed at the amount of support it received on that Saturday. In f so much so that volunteers pooled together additional resources to expand the project to 4 rai

There are now 2 raised vegetable beds, 1 raised pollinator bed, and 1 raised vegetable and poll The produce from the garden will be donated to local residents in need. The Sangaree Library g thank you to all of the community participants who stopped by on Saturday to help and have m project a reality. On July 28th, the community assisted with painting a sign and giving the gard own personal touches. To-date, the garden has produced 26 banana peppers, 3 cucumbers, an to Helping Hands, a local food bank.

The Sangaree Library continues to need the help of the community to keep these gardens grow who would like to help maintain the garden beds is welcome, and the library will have tools at that volunteers may borrow.

Library System Brings MiFi30 to the Lowcountry: A First-of-its-kind Service for South Carolina ST. STEPHEN, SC - THE BERKELEY COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM, WITH ASSISTANCE FROM GOOGLE, IS PLEASED TO BE THE FIRST LIBRARY SYSTEM IN THE STATE TO OFFER A NEW SERVICE, MIFI30, WHICH ALLOWS CUSTOMERS TO CHECK OUT THE INTERNET FOR 30 DAYS, FREE WITH THEIR LIBRARY CARD. This new service began with a grant of over $11k from Google to the Friends of the Berkeley County Library. Google’s grant provided the funds for 20 MiFi jetpacks and service for the first year. The Berkeley County Library provided twenty Chromebooks, each with a case and mouse, for the program. The Berkeley County Library System’s MiFi30 program is the first to offer both the wifi service and a device with no restrictions to anyone who has a library card, thus embodying their “Open Up!” philosophy. “We are proud to be the first library system in South Carolina to have the MiFi30 service,” said Donna Worden, the Berkeley County Library Director. “We will track the service’s usage and send out surveys to get feedback for improvement. The library looks forward to the spread of digital literacy and new opportunities the MiFi30 service will provide. Access to the world's information promotes reading and a love of learning.” On July 24, 2015, the new MiFi30 was launched from the full-service bookmobile at one of its stops in the town of St. Stephen. Seventeen customers were able to check out the new MiFi30s. In attendance for this monumental event were: Rob Sanchez, Eric Wages, and Lilyn Hester from Google SC, Councilman Caldwell Pinckney, County Supervisor William Peagler, St. Stephen Mayor John Rivers, as well as representatives from the Berkeley Library System Board of Trustees, the State Library, and the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce to share in the celebration (pictured above). After seeing the tremendous response to the launch of this new program, Google SC has generously offered to pay for the 2nd year of service on the wifi jetpacks!! Read more at berkeleylibrarysc.org.

Another Successful Summer Reading Program The Berkeley County Library System and the Friends of the Library celebrate another successful year for the Summer Reading Program. The Summer Reading Program has become a passion for the FOBCLS, who contribute more than $11,000 each year for prizes, such as t-shirts and medals, programs, such as the magic show, and supplies. Without the help of the FOBCLS, the Summer Reading Program would not be possible. The FOBCLS truly are the Heroes for this program and we thank them for all their support.
