BCLS Joins Library Foundation of the Lowcountry for First-Ever On the Table A glimpse of the plastic bags removed from just 4 of our 7 libraries branches!
#BorrowMoreWasteLess Green Initiative Well Received This Spring Berkeley County Library System began a new “Go Green” initiative for our customers and the communities we serve titled #BorrowMoreWasteLess. In this initiative, we removed the all plastic bags from our library branches and coordinated a series of programs to educate the community on environmental matters and the available environmental services in Berkeley County. In honor of Earth Day on April 22, BCLS also began giving customers a free reusable bag. The reusable bags were generously sponsored by AM Conservation Group, Home Telecom, and Berkeley Electric. Other partners of this initiative who assisted with educational programs included Santee Cooper, Berkeley County Water and Sanitation, Keep Berkeley Beautiful, Clemson Cooperative Extension, Berkeley Soil and Water Conservation District, and Lowcountry Raptors. We are very excited by the response from the community and our customers for this change and already have new sponsors to support the next round of bags, The Daniel Island Rotary Club and the Daniel Island Community Fund. The #BorrowMoreWasteLess initiative will continue throughout the summer. In June customers can receive a Reusable Bag Credit during the month. This one-time credit will apply up to $1 towards any fees or fines on the customer’s account if a customer uses any reusable bag when borrowing library materials. To read more, visit

Lowcountry on the Table, a community-wide conversation about issues that matter in the Lowcountry, launched a pilot program on May 1, 2018. The initiative drew a variety of civic discussions from over 400 Lowcountry residents across 63 tables in private residences, local restaurants and workplaces. BCLS was pleased to host 3 sessions at the Moncks Corner Library. According to a press release after the May 1 event, “One of our main goals is to engage people in conversation with those they would not otherwise meet,” said Library Foundation President George Stevens. “After analyzing the surveys, we were delighted to see that 87 percent of participants met someone new while candidly sharing ideas on how to improve our community.” Initial analysis of social media responses and online questionnaires indicate that 99 percent of participants were satisfied with the quality of the conversations while 75 percent personally committed to taking action to improve the community as a result of the program. The most frequent issues included education, followed by transportation, affordable housing, traffic, flooding and growth. Survey demographics represented residents with a mix of ethnicities from rural, suburban and downtown areas in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties. Lowcountry On the Table continues on October 4, 2018 and is open to all Lowcountry residents. For more information visit lowcountryonthetable.org.

STEM Programs Engage Students of All Ages Berkeley County Library System hosted several STEM-related programs at the start of the year to help engage students of all ages. The Homeschool Meetup at Goose Creek Library engaged a diverse crowd of homeschoolers of all ages while The Laboratory at Hanahan Library focused on students in the tween age but ended up thrilling the parents just as much, and the Teen Tech Workshops at St. Stephen both hosted a good crowd of young adults. Homeschool Meetup at Goose Creek In January even after the snow storm, 26 children and 8 adults came to the Goose Creek Library for some excitement and fun learning in the new Homeschool Meetup Program. This new program, coordinated and hosted by BCLS’s Young Adult Librarian, BriAnne Baxley, had tremendous success connecting homeschool students in the area and providing a fun educational opportunity centered around various topics. Baxley started each program with a book reading that went along with the topic for the day. Baxley explains, “This helped draw them in Egg Drop experiment at the and to get them started thinking of what their Goose Creek Homeschool Meetup activity might involve. In one particular meeting, the children were inspired by a STEM book about a little girl who kept trying to fly so Baxley broke them up into small groups and gave them 10-15 minutes to visit different centers. The centers consisted of STEM kits such as a snap circuit kit and a Virtual Reality kit.” In March, the Homeschool Meetup had an “egg”cellent time. They made paper airplanes and talked about why (or why not) their creations flew the way they did. Baxley says, ”This lesson helped them prep for the following meeting during which they created a parachute or some kind of holder that would help them get an egg to safety when dropped. “ During this program, BriAnne climbed up on a ladder and dropped each one at the same height and the children would race to see if it was cracked. ”The eggs were not cooked so it added to the “ick” factor.” A Virtual Reality Experience at The Laboratory at Hanahan Library
The Laboratory at Hanahan Library In January, the Virtual Reality Kit made its way to the “The Laboratory” at Hanahan Library. Those who participated took turns being on the moon, riding on water slides, and playing interactive games. Branch Manager Karen Altman says, “Parents who were in attendance also had a fantastic time and were interested in how they could have one of their own.” In March, The Laboratory program asked participants to create a protective shelter for a Peep Bunny. They could use as many of the items available as they wanted as long as it could hold up a book. Altman comments, “It’s crazy what a few toothpicks, some jelly beans, and one Peep will create.” Teen Techshops For Girls The STEM activities continued at the St. Stephen Library when BCLS’s tech

Auto-Renewals Now Available! Hello automatic renewal of library materials. Goodbye to unnecessary fines! You may have noticed your library materials are now renewing themselves! Yep, no more running to the library to renew your item if you need a little more time to finish it. (Caveat: If there's a wait list on your item, it won't renew and the original due date still applies. Sorry!)
My name is Sharon S., and I am a frequent visitor to the St. Stephen Library. By frequent visitor, I mean that I am literally there everyday when the library opens, and most days I remain there until they close. I have always enjoyed the library’s resources and programs, but today I want to specifically sing the praises of what I think is an underused and under appreciated library resource: electronic resources, namely Lynda.com and Universal Class. I have always worked with technology. Keeping abreast of technology and updates is so much easier now that the library offers Lynda.com. To date, I have 170 certificates of completion from Lynda.com! Just for fun, I went online and did research to see what these classes would have cost me without free access to Lynda.com. The answer: a staggering $45 - $50,000!
“
Universal Class is another great tool that I have actually used in helping other library customers who are exploring possible career options. For example, a young lady I met here at the library was debating going into bookkeeping as a career - I quickly directed her to Universal Class offering so she could explore and get the feel of it for free without any investment (except time, of course). Please continue providing these wonderful resources to our community!
When an item is coming due, we will renew it for you – automatically. You won’t lose time, as items renew from the previous due date for another full loan period. If we have your email address, you’ll get a notice that says what renewed, what didn’t, and the new due dates. *Note,
auto-renewals are for physical library materials only. For more details about the available renewals for physical library materials, visit berkeleylibrarysc.org/member

My name is Sally. The library is such a blessing to me. The staff is very friendly and helpful – they assist me at the computer when I need to check my work emails. I even use library computers to do required training for my job.
DI Needleworkers From experts to beginners, join in the fun on alternate Tuesday mornings. Bring your quilt, appliqué, embroidery, or any portable needle project and stay for a while to sew, make new friends, and chat.
Through the library’s technology classes, I gained help on how to use my own cell phone. After my daughter bought me a laptop, I was able to bring it to the tech classes and receive one-on-one help from Aubrey. Aubrey showed me how to use Microsoft Word and how to make address labels. These are things I did not know how to do and now I can – it’s because of my library. In the Retro Sewers classes, I’ve learned and shared new techniques I use in making clothes, curtains, and baby diaper bags (pictured right). I even learned how to repair my sewing machine. Cooking Academy classes are the best! One class in particular that I loved is the one in which Ms. Tina showed us how to prepare quick, delicious, and healthy One Pot Meals.

Finally, I can come to the library and find books on any topic that I want or even think about. I can check it out for two whole weeks and then return it – this doesn’t work with my grandchildren because they live in another city. Now this is where the Friends of the Library book sale corner is of great use because I have found and purchased lots of great books for my grands and mailed them.
If you knit and/or crochet, or you would like to learn how, come join us! If you are looking to learn, someone is always available to teach. Moncks Corner Library Tuesdays, Weekly, 5:30 pm

Friends
Friends of the Library President’s Post-It Probably the most exciting program that the Friends of the Berkeley County Library fund is right around the corner…and that is the Summer Reading Program! It is awesome and exciting for all involved…from the patrons, the staff and the FOL. The Library staff has put together another outstanding program for this summer. Please, if you haven’t already signed up, do so…you won’t be sorry. Not only will you get great reading, but there are so many fantastic prizes. Check any of the branches or the bookmobile for details. The Easter Bunny pictures that FOL did in March were a big hit. Thanks to everyone who supported the Friends. We enjoyed it so much. The Book Sales at the various libraries have been very successful and we are always looking for volunteers to help with those. Even if you have an hour to help, it is deeply appreciated. There will be another sale at the Moncks Corner Library on June 16 from 10:00 until 4:00; and remember, members of the Friends can come in at 9:00 and shop early. If you are not a member, you can join at the door. Our goal is to be out in the community more and let everyone know what the Friends are about and invite you to join us. There is a very satisfying feeling when we volunteer, and there are so many ways to do so. I encourage each of you to consider becoming a member. Please contact the Friends at folbcls@gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you. Our fundraising committee is planning a major event…stay tuned for details!! It will be fun. Again, I want to thank everyone who has bought books from the Friends’ shelves in each library or at the book sales. Without your help we could not fund the library programs nor the Summer Reading Program. THANK YOU!! Please continue to support the FOL, which in turn means you are supporting the Berkeley County Library System. The scheduled upcoming meetings for the FOL are as follows; June 19 - Hanahan Library (Please note-this is the 3rd Tuesday instead of the 4th Tuesday due to the primary election and the potential runoff) July 24 - Sangaree Library August 28 - Goose Creek Library All meetings are at 5:00PM. All FOL members are invited to attend. I encourage and cordially invite each of you to become a Friend of the Library. There is an open spot just for you!! Looking forward to seeing you at our events. S K, L Pein

Berkeley County Library System | Open Up! Program Catalog
Why join the Friends? The Friends of Berkeley County Library System is an incorporated non-profit organization of volunteers. We promote, enhance, and support the Berkeley County Library System to bring all the exciting, involving, inspiring programs our county’s residents both need…and deserve. Support from our members and other generous donors has enabled BCLS to offer special programs that have a huge impact on our community. While public funding supports basic library operations, support from the Friends allows the library to do more for their customers. It’s what makes the difference between a good library and a great library. Money is raised through membership fees, donations, Friends’ book sale shelves at each library, and special fundraising events. Funds from the Friends help support programs and initiatives for children, teens, and adults including the Summer Reading Program for all 6 BCLS library branches and the mobile library. The Friends of the Berkeley County Library, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization.
Ways to Help: • Sorting, pricing, and managing the bookstore at one of the 6 BCLS library branches. • Planning or volunteering at special events such as a community book sales, an author signing, annual meeting, etc. • Managing the membership list and communications. • Hosting membership drives or recruiting new members. • Hospitality and reaching out to members when a volunteer opportunity arises. • Updating and creating new marketing materials and maintaining public relations such as social media. See a full description of our Committees and our upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities online at berkeleylibrarysc.org/friends
It feels so good to be a Friend! As a member of the Friends of the Library, you will be rewarded in a thousand ways every year – with hundreds of children’s smiles as they receive their Summer Reading t-shirt and medals, the sincere appreciation from library staff for your support, and the satisfaction of knowing you make a difference to one of Berkeley County’s most important resources.
