What’s Happenin’ The latest news and resources at your library.

@BCLS

Young Learner’s Toolbox (YLT): About two years ago, the library received a grant to create a place where children with learning, language or communication barriers can obtain an out-of-school, hands-on learning experience. The YLT Learning Lab, located at the Moncks Corner Library, encourages kids to learn through play with multi-sensory toys, learning kits, and digital resources such as iPads and preloaded learning tablets. Families are also able to checkout some of the materials to play and learn at home. BCLS Connects (formally MiFi30): Thanks to a grant from Google SC, in the summer of 2015 BCLS became the first library to circulate Chromebooks coupled with a WiFi hotspot for a 30-day checkout period. The

NEW Lynda.com: By popular demand, BCLS

now offers the online learning service, Lynda.com, from the professional social network, LinkedIn. This online learning solution makes learning from industry experts easy and allows users to seamlessly switch between their computer, tablet, or mobile device. See ad on page 7.

BCLS Adds New Items to Collection In April, BCLS will celebrate National Library Week, in honor of the national campaign, “Libraries Transform,” we wanted to share a few ways we have been transforming our services and communities. BCLS has been very busy over the last few years adding new items, special collections, and innovated services for our customers. With an emphasis on removing barriers, many of these collections and services strive to serve our customers in a unique way while also banishing the bias that libraries are just warehouses of books. Here are just a few ways BCLS is transforming:

Education and the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce. In 2017, BCE received another grant to extend the program.

Kids can play freely in the Learning Lab at the Moncks Corner Library and check out various learning materials through the YLT Program.

service is now called BCLS Connects and has been expanded to let customers check out a Chromebook, a WiFi unit, or a kit with both for two weeks. Launchpads, Preloaded Learning Tablets for Kids: BCLS circulates Playaway Launchpads,

preloaded learning tablets that offer best-selling apps grouped by age and grade level or by subject area such as English language arts, math, and science, all without the need for WiFi.

NEW GoChip Beam: BCLS now has a fun new way to enjoy on-the-go-entertainment with the GoChip Beam. This movie and TV hotspot allows customers to enjoy 15 hours of entertainment (5 movies or 1 whole television season) on one easy-to-use device. Plus they can play on 8 devices at the same time without using WiFi or data. See ad on page 13. NEW Circulating Board Games: BCLS is really excited to offer a new collection of board games to our customers. Read more about this collection on page 8.

New Launchpad Video: These video tablets are the only pre-loaded tablet featuring favorite movies and popular TV shows for hours of entertainment at home and on the go for kids - and you can now check one out at your library! See ad on page 7.

Berkeley Career Express (BCE): BCE is a program

to assist in providing Digital Literacy and Career Ready Workshops, ACT Soft Skills Courses and Adult Basic Education/General Education Development (GED) in rural areas of Berkeley County. The BCE was jump-started through a September 2016 Google grant with the Friends of the Berkeley County Library, in association with Berkeley County Adult

Chromebooks and WiFi hotspots are available for BCE participants to checkout and study at home.

We see the impact that the library has on our community every day. Lately, the library has been bringing in teens by the droves, and often in the mornings, there are people waiting by the door for the library to open. Judge Whaley (middle) says: Tina’s name is well known at St. Stephen Middle School because her niece often speaks of her and hears other kids speaking well of her.

Love From Our Staff & Customers

The library has been great about sharing the multipurpose room and many of our customers use library facilities and resources before or after court. I love the cooperation and collaboration that we have with the library. Tina is an awesome partner – warm and inviting, and I doubt that our partnership would work without her. Earl (far right) says: The level of community involvement and outreach from the library is outstanding – I have eaten things there that I never thought I would eat, and the library is responsible for exposing me and the community to new and different things. ~ Members of the St. Stephen Magistrate Court

This picture is so real to me. As a mobile outreach supervisor, 75% of my job is spent at this desk. This desk, covered in sequins, markers, and sticky glue. And these sweet girls. I am so humbled and thankful every time I visit this top. I don't always necessarily need to be behind a computer reading emails...sometimes I just need to make a fish out of paper hearts. THIS IS OUTREACH and I love it. ~ Elizabeth, Mobile Library Supervisor

This is in Hanahan at Hope 4 Kids Afterschool care. The kids come on a few at a time and immediately go straight to the Launchpad tablets. They know to go to Miss. Tharin in the back and give her the tablet they want to use and she sets them up. They play for a little while before checking out their books. They are always so well behaved and love to show each other the different learning games they are playing.

~ Mobile Library Staff

A young lady who is very skilled at couponing has been in the Hanahan Library and using the Coupon Corner. She has spent time organizing it which is much appreciated by staff. She also brought copies of her receipts to demonstrate how she is able to be a stay at home mom by couponing. Her receipts over the month totaled just over $500. She spent less than $8.00!! She explained that she does not "hoard" the items but gives away much of it to pet shelters, family and friends in need and homeless shelters. She also volunteered to take our old newspapers to the local pet shelter for lining cages.

~ Karen, Hanahan Library Branch Manager

Your Library Has Game! Board Games That Is Written by Tina Chenoweth, MLIS St. Stephen Branch Manager Board games are one of the latest in a series of new products offered by BCLS, and they align perfectly with the library’s mission of lifelong learning. Thanks to donations from individuals and several generous board game publishers, BCLS now offers nearly 70 games that can be checked out. The rental time is one week, with two renewals. The teaching and learning benefits of board games are widely touted, but they also offer a unique social aspect: they encourage players to use cognitive skills to work together and find peaceful, effective solutions to problems. Many parents, teachers, and families complain about society’s over-dependence on electronic devices and social media – one good way of dealing with this issue is with board games. New to modern board games? That’s okay – our staff stand ready to match you with the perfect board game. Check our catalog today for a complete listing. You can locate them easily in our catalog with the keyword “board games.” If you are searching in our mobile catalog app, BookMyne, be sure to select the St. Stephen Library as your library before you search.

We have games if you like:

• Fans of Game of Thrones such as Battle of Westeros, For Crown & Kingdom, and Ivanhoe. • Science & Steam including Bugs, Evolution, Steam Works, and Goblins, Inc. • History topics like Constitution Quest. • Family or Party Games like Splendor. • Beginners and Filler Games including A Fool’s Fortune and Hounded. • Heavier Games for experienced gamers like California, Gloom, and Agents of SMERSH.
