Daniel Island "Local History is for Everyone Series" Victory Day 1782 December 14, 1782, the British garrison in Charleston requested a cease fire to retreat, unmolested, to their awaiting fleet in the harbor. The soldiers were covered by a British armada. The last British forces in America, south of New York, were escorted to their evacuation ships by General Wayne's mounted dragoons. British occupation forces gave up the war and left America to self-rule! Join Ken Scarlett of Revolutionary Charleston to learn more about this proud day in SC history.

As fall, and the wonderful cooler weather, approaches, I hope everyone had an exciting summer and read a lot. Whether at home in the air conditioning, at the Berkeley County Library branch, or traveling on vacation/business, we should always have a book close by to read. Check out the catalog at the Berkeley County Library website https://berkeleylibrarysc.org/ …such a great selection and genre available! The Summer Reading program, sponsored by the Friends, has once again been a huge success! The staff does a great job with the program and the number of participants attest to their hard work. Many thanks to the staff!! The annual meeting of Friends of the Library and election of officers will be held in October. Watch the Friends Facebook page for date, time and location at https://www.facebook.com/FOBCLS/. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. A speaker will be present and light refreshments will be served. Please consider becoming a member of the Friends. Your talent or expertise may be just what is needed. Membership is only $10 per year for an individual and $20 for a family. Don’t forget to browse the Friends’ shelves in each of the branches. A drop box is available to purchase from the great selection of books, DVD’s, audiobooks, etc. from the shelf. The money raised goes to support the programs your library has planned. Enjoy the fall and remember to join the Friends!
