What’s Happenin’
@BCLS
BCLS Breaks Ground on New Cane Bay Library with YMCA “This state-of-the-art facility will create unmatched recreation and educational opportunities in Berkeley County,” said Berkeley County Supervisor, Bill Peagler. “This is a great addition to an already wonderful community and will further enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages.”
Berkeley County Library Director Gene Brunson and Library Board Chair Patricia Richards are joined by YMCA representatives, county officials, and business supporters of the new Cane Bay YMCA and Library for a ground breaking ceremony.
Berkeley County Library System along with Cannon Street YMCA of Greater Charleston held the groundbreaking for their new state-of-the-art facility in Cane Bay on June 2, 2017. This highly-anticipated project will feature a 54,000 sqft sports facility with a 25-meter swimming pool, full basketball court, jogging track, multipurpose spaces and even a library. The 5,000 sqft library will be full service and is the first of its kind collaboration between a county library and a YMCA in the United States.
“This new YMCA and public library will serve the community beautifully and draw people from throughout the region,” said Paul Stoney, President and CEO of the Cannon Street YMCA of Greater Charleston. “Our collaboration with the Berkeley County Library System has been amazing and has assisted us in developing a comprehensive venue where on a given day, people from across the region could be attending a softball tournament, aquatics education, a tennis tournament and soccer tournament, or just reading a book in the technology center.”
Library Director, Gene Brunson comments, “The Berkeley County Library System seeks to maximize opportunities to enrich the lives of Berkeley County residents. The Cane Bay library, a collaboration with the YMCA of Greater Charleston, is such an endeavor. A library is vital for a literate, informed, and engaged community. We are excited to build a library in Cane Bay and for the opportunity to provide dynamic and exceptional library service for this growing area of the county.” The facility will be built in the heart of the Cane Bay community on U.S. Highway 176 in Berkeley County and is expected to open in the summer of 2018.

This new resource is free to any Berkeley County School District student attending kindergarten during the 2017-18 school year. Mobile Library and IT Staff WOW Students at NAACP STEM Camp The Moncks Corner Branch NAACP hosted its first ever Summer Youth Education Camp on July 18 - 21, 2017 at Moncks Corner Baptist Church Life Center, 500 East Main Street, Moncks Corner, SC 29461. The theme for the camp was “Empowering Curious Minds” with a focus on STEM activities and education for students ages 11 14. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. During the 4-day camp, students were able to explore the STEM field in the Lowcountry through use of Chromebooks, hands-on experiments, educational and motivational speakers, and physical exercise. Presenters at the camp included SPAWAR, Boeing, Google, Berkeley County Library System, Berkeley County Sheriff Department, Department of Juvenile Justice, and youth advisor, Lori Bennett. The students were also treated to a tour of Boeing’s North Charleston’s Facility on the last day of the camp. According to an article in the Berkeley Independent Newspaper, camp organizer, Jerald Borden Jr. stresses the importance of such a camp for the area. He explains that in rural areas, residents aren’t always trained to work in the growing field. He said it is important to start training from adolesBCLS IT staff instructs a student cence. on a Virtual Maze Game.

The mobile library staff and members of the library’s technology and systems department delighted the students with tech toys to experiment with such as a virtual reality headset, 3D printer, circuit games, and other tech toys. Students also had an opportunity to explore the mobile library and check out books and resources about STEM activities, learning, and careers in STEM related industries. By the end of the day, the students did not want the library to leave! These volunteers were so grateful for us coming and spending some time with the kids and giving them something to do. They enjoyed using our Chromebooks and Launchpads (learning tablets) and building crafts for them to take home at the end of the day. Mobile Library Grant Beneficiary for 2017 Duck Race The BCLS mobile library was a grant beneficiary for the 2017 Duck Race. This is the third time BCLS has been a recipient of this grant, the first of which provided the seed money to start funding the mobile library, a service that had not been available in the county for over 25 years.

The kids had a great afternoon working in small groups to collaborate, problem solve, play and create. Seeing the intuitive way they worked together and their natural aptitude for the STEM curriculum was amazing.”
M.O.R.E. Brings Creativity to Special Stops During Summer In an effort to reach more communities than traditional stops every other week, the mobile library staff built in free time to visit special stops this summer. Stops included day care centers, summer camps, and community centers. During these special stops, the mobile library staff would bring a program or activity to engage the participants. A portion of the funds will be used to expand the mobile library’s Playaway collection. Playaways are an alternative to traditional audio books that cater to reluctant readers, visually impaired readers, readers who cannot access electronic audio books and other readers that prefer the audio book format. For example, Timberland High School students are enjoying the Playaway format and are becoming more engaged teens. Playaways benefit students who do not have internet access to download an audio book and who no longer have CD players at home.

What’s Happenin’@BCLS BCLS Geeks Out at 4th Annual WhateverCon for Teens With comic conventions on the rise, public libraries have begun to embrace these special “cons” to provide a place where library customers cancome and geek out with those of similar interests. When the Berkeley County Library System began to look for a fun and engaging way to kick off the return of their Teen Anime Club after the summer hiatus, the young adult librarian and staff members involved in the planning knew that an after-hours “Con” was the direction to go.
First WhateverCon
Third WhateverCon
Now in it’s fourth year, WhateverCon continues to thrill teens, drawing in over 200 participants every year. On August 20th of 2017, the Goose Creek Library opened its doors to anime buffs, superheroes, Pokémon trainers, Minecraft experts, space adventurers, and other masters of fandom. The event featured panels, creative cosplay, and board and #WhateverCon2017 video game challenges along with free food and giveaways – all in one place for teens.
Little Free Library in Butterfly Garden Next to Hanahan Library Hanahan Library is the only library in the county that sits next to a butterfly garden. During the past three years, and through Keep Hanahan Beautiful volunteer efforts and generous grants, the site has become an idyllic and educational spot. The Hanahan Butterfly & Pollinator Garden Project started when Berkeley County donated land next to Hanahan Library’s new building in November 2014. A perfect partnership started. Keep Hanahan Beauti-

ful (KHB), a local non-profit that promotes community pride through recycling, preservation, and beautification, took on the project and made it flourish. Phase 1 of the project meant breaking ground and designing the Butterfly Garden as well as a Rain Garden. In addition, designers built a Rain Harvesting System to recycle water and make better use of the earth’s resources. Volunteers came and gave their time to lay mulch, design flowerbeds, and help wherever it was needed. In September 2015, KHB received a grant from Lowe’s and assistance from volunteers to beautify the area. Kids received a new area with rubber mulch and picnic tables. Visitors enjoyed a new bench swing and stone pathway. Since then, volunteers have been maintaining the garden. Recently, local schools got involved with the project, too. The Hanahan Elementary School Council decorated and painted the picnic tables, giving them some artistic flair. An art teacher and her class made beautiful mosaic stone stepping stones.
Cne Library is a national initiative to keep open access to reading for everyone by spreading small book exchange boxes around the country. The Hanahan Butterfly and Pollinator Garden project is always growing and welcoming assistance. If you’re interested in volunteering, visit Keep Hanahan Beautiful’s website to get involved.
Miles Was Found! At the beginning of summer, BCLS put out a call for help to #FindMiles, the long lost bookworm friend of our mobile library, MORE. In communities all over Berkeley County, Miles was hidden and those that found him were encouraged to bring him back to the library for a prize.

On June 22nd, employees from Cypress Gardens brought a butterfly program to the library’s activity room in order to teach kids about the insect’s life cycle. Later that afternoon, the library hosted a Free Little Library Ribbon Cutting ceremony in memory of Daniel Kennedy, son of a longtime Hanahan library friend and customer, Mrs. Peggy Mrs. Peggy Kennedy Kennedy. Ways to Get Involved F R I E N D S
President’s Post-It
What a tremendous success the 2017 Summer Reading Program has been! The Friends fund this program with your help…every time you purchase a book from the Friends book sale shelf in each branch, shop at one of our book sales, buy concessions at the free Movies under the Stars, or donate by becoming a member, you have contributed to the BCLS programs, such as Summer Reading. We need each of you so we can continue with the many and varied programs at all the library branches in Berkeley County. Please consider joining the Friends. With the holiday season coming up, many of you will probably shop on Amazon. If you will register on smile.amazon.com, Amazon will donate 0.05% of the purchase price to the Friends of the Berkeley County Library, Inc. You choose which organization you want your donation given---it adds nothing to the money you spend—and helps the Friends fund programs in your Berkeley County Libraries. I encourage each of you to register…makes me feel like I’m giving two gifts for the price of one! This year, please also remember the FOL on #GivingTuesday, November 28. As Berkeley County grows, we want and need to grow our membership. There are many areas for volunteers…so much talent out there…maybe an hour to give here or there…perhaps you are just the person we need to fill a slot. I invite and encourage you to join the Friends. And, remember to take advantage of the fun and exciting programs at your library. You never know what you may be missing.
~ Sue Kelley, FOL President
Manage Book Shelves in the Library We need 1 or 2 volunteers at the Hanahan Library to sort books and display them on the Friends’ shelves. If you are a member of the FOL and live in the Hanahan area, please consider this opportunity as a way to help the FOL, and in turn, help the Berkeley County Library System. The books that are sold from the Friends shelves in each branch library go toward helping fund library programs. Please call 843-351-4674 to volunteer. Your help is appreciated.
Join Our Fundraising Committee Are you outgoing and creative? Do you love to support a good cause and get involved? Or maybe you just have some fun ideas you want to share. The FOL will be forming a new fundraising committee and we want to invite you to join us!
Friends Help Library “Build A Better World” During Summer Reading Program The Friends of the Library raise funds all year long to help support the Library’s community events, programs, and special needs but since its inception, the primary program for which funds are contributed remains to be the Summer Reading Program. We are so grateful to continue to support this instrumental program every year for the Berkeley County Library System. We would like to thank everyone for their support, from buying a used book off the Friends book shelves in a library, to attending a book sale, volunteering at a fund raiser, or just becoming a member, your contribution has made these programs possible. The 2017 Summer Reading Program had 2,734 participants. Because of you, we are able to give prizes to participants and pay for amazing programs like the magic show and theatre group. Here are a few highlights from the summer:
