A Note From The Director The year 2015 is almost over. A new year full of hopes, resolutions, possibilities, opportunities and expectations awaits us. As with so many other library leaders at this time of year, I reflect on the calendar year now ending, and ponder the continuing transformation of libraries in our communities. Libraries, I believe, are and have been a community’s most invaluable resource. They are no longer just a warehouse of books or an institution that has out lived its purpose. They are vibrant, thriving places where everyone is welcome. They offer free access to high speed Internet and digital resources. Libraries help people of all ages select reliable authoritative online information, prepare a resume, or conduct a job search. They are places to learn, grow and improve. Happy New Year! I hope one of your resolutions this year is to read more, learn something new, and take advantage of the many programs, services and resources the library in your community has to offer. We have something for everyone, from storytimes to anime fan gatherings, movie showings, knitting and crocheting groups, book clubs, and writers’ groups.

Donna Worden

“Libraries are the place where learning never stops.”

And, on February 6, 2016, our second annual Tri-county Literary Celebration will be held at Santee Canal Park from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. This is a gathering of dozens of local authors for you to meet and talk with. We hope to see you there.

Make visiting and using your library a resolution you keep throughout 2016.

~Donna Worden, BCLS Director

Employee Spotlights St. Stephen Library Staff From before the time the library closed in its old location at the end of August until it opened on September 8th at the new location and after, the St. Stephen staff, Vickie, Donna, and Ethel worked diligently to ensure that they would be ready for moving.

Ethel, Donna, Vickie, and Donna Shuler-Rodin

Once the library moved, they gave 120% to make sure that everything was shelved and that the library looked really good for the grand opening. All three ladies are very pleasant and go the extra mile to help customers. The staff in general are wonderful to work with and they make my job less stressful than it could be. I appreciate all their efforts. ~Donna Shuler-Rodin, St. Stephen Branch Manager

Winter Reading Program Engage and encourage your family* members of all generations to participate in the first-ever BCLS Winter Reading Program! It is so simple: if Mom reads a book, Dad reads an e-book, baby listens to a book, and Grandma reads a magazine… they all count! Just add up the number of pages read each night from everyone in your “family,” record it on your free BCLS Winter Reading Calendar (available at any BCLS location or you can print one online), then visit your local library and record your numbers on a decorative snowflake. Submit your family totals as often as you wish and be entered to win. *You can build your own family! Daycares, schools, church groups, co-workers, etc. are welcome to join the program as a “Family.”

The Winter Reading Program runs from Jan. 19 to Feb. 29. All submissions must be returned by March 5th to be entered to win. One winner will be drawn from each branch. The Friends of the Berkeley County Library held a “Huge Book Sale” on September 19th and are thrilled to report the long hours of sorting books and pricing items paid off tremendously, raising more than $3,300 in gross sales. Items for sale included books, movies, CDs, t-shirts, tote bags, and baked goods. Thank you to all who contributed in either donating items to be sold, donating time to help sort and price, or support through spreading the word. It was a terrific group effort and we could not have done it without you. This holiday season, the Friends of the Library held four “pop-up” book sales at various library branches and those sales garnered more than $300. The Friends were also honored to participate in Photos with Santa at the Celebrate The Season light festival at Old Santee Canal Park. Proceeds from such fundraisers help to support the Tri-County Literary Celebration, Summer Reading Programs, and monthly programming for children, teens and adults at all of the library branches county-wide. For more information about the Friends visit us online at berkeleylibrarysc.gov/friends-of-the-library or follow us on Facebook @Berkeley County Library - BCLS.
