What’s Happenin’@BCLS STEM Outreach Impacts Community Members
Library Closings Tuesday, July 4th See more news about What’s Happenin’ on pg. 14
When Tina Chenoweth, the St. Stephen Library manager, had extra supplies left over from her STEM workshop, she decided to do something a little different through her outreach. A few years ago, the St. Stephen Library didn’t have a community room. They were located in a small building on Main Street. But when the library moved to their new location in the historic school building, they received more room to expand, along with a community room for activities. Soon authors, sewers, knitters, and other hobbyists took the initiative to host their own programs through the library. When Tina Chenoweth began her role as the library’s current branch manager, she brought in even more ideas. There’s a lot going on at the library now. One of the newest programs is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) camp for kids on early release days. The camp’s programs involve growing seeds and herbs in gloves and bottles and keeping track of plant growth through observation. Although Tina’s program wasn’t poorly attended, there were still a lot of supplies left over. She repeated the program with teens, but still had a surplus. So she decided to think outside the box and take what was left to the Lake Moultrie Nursing Home for outreach. The impact surprised her. “They loved it!” Tina said. “They were amazed at the concept, and both residents and the nursing home staff stopped by the window in which the gloves were hanging every day to marvel at how big the seeds had grown.” Tina returned the next time with pots so everyone could plant their seeds. Claudine Haynes, Activities Director for Lake Moultrie Nursing Home, reported on the progress of the outreach program. “The gardening in a glove program was the most popular program we have had. I think the residents like it so much because there is an outcome, something to look forward to.” Tina’s outreach success accomplished two great things: First, the STEM projects engaged everyone at the nursing home, even the men. “Some of the residents who were male sometimes don’t enjoy participating in artsy/crafty stuff I do there, but there were so many more men in these programs that it was shocking,” said Tina. “We even had two male residents who never attend any programs at the home, but they came to both of my STEM programs.”
Tina Chenoweth (middle) with Claudine (left) and Kristen (right), the Activities Director and Activities Asst. at Lake Moultrie Nursing Home.
The other great thing about the plants is that the residents of the nursing home now have a small sustainable garden – a gift that keeps on giving. “I will definitely be incorporating more STEM programs in my outreach there,” said Tina, “and I am thinking about bringing STEM Camp to one of the after-school programs at one of my daycares that I visit every week.”
Butterfuly Garden at Hanahan Library Gets New Sign and Little Free Library Ribbon Cutting The Butterfly Garden at the Hanahan Library was the Keep Hanahan Beautiful (KHB) Organization’s first major undertaking since becoming Affiliates of Keep America Beautiful and PalmettoPride. KHB’s project was made possible by combining the efforts and resources of the library, schools, community groups, churches, businesses, government agencies, service organizations, youth groups, and Cypress Gardens. The Butterfly garden is designed to engage the entire Community to educate, motivate and empower citizens in the beautification, conservation, and preservation of our environment. Now adorned by a new arbor and sign, the beautiful walk-through outdoor Butterfly Garden Exhibit is a color and texture extravaganza of thousands of plants fashioned to sustain the complete life cycle of the butterfly. Educational graphics are placed throughout the garden highlighting the intricacies of butterflies, other pollinators’ and their importance in the surrounding ecosystems.

You can now search by Lexile level in our catalog!

Who are the Friends? F R I E N D S
President’s Post-It
As we go into the summer months, I hope everyone has signed up for the Summer Reading Program. The program is for everyone—from babies to adults! This is the premier program of the Berkeley County Library System and the Friends provide the funds to make it as enjoyable and helpful to the community as possible. It’s not too late to sign up, so come and let’s “Build a Better World” with books. Doing the concessions for “Movies Under the Stars” has once again proved to be a success. All of you who have volunteered have been such troopers!! There is no way this would have been successful without your time and willingness to help. Many, many thanks to each one of you. All the proceeds go toward library programs such as the ones advertised in this book. There is such a variety of programs; definitely “something for everyone. In the past few months, I’ve learned to make egg rolls (St. Stephen); paper quilling (Moncks Corner); built a bird house (St. Stephen). I’m marking my calendar now for the next three months’ programs!! Please come and join the fun. I encourage and invite all members of the Friends to attend our monthly meetings, held on the 4th Tuesday. Meeting locations and times are posted on this page. We would love to have YOU as a member of the Friends. Membership envelopes are available at all library branches and your membership donation is tax deductible.
promote, enhance, and support the Berkeley County Library System to bring all the exciting, involving, inspiring programs our county’s residents both need… and deserve. Money is raised through membership fees, corporate incentives, Friends’ book sale shelves at each library and special fundraising events. Funds from the Friends help support programs and initiatives for children, teens, and adults including the Summer Reading Program. Every year, the Friends provide t-shirts, medals, and prizes to children who complete the Summer Reading Program. Want to join, volunteer, or donate to the Friends of the Library? Visit us at

The books that are sold from the Friends shelves in each branch library go toward helping fund library programs.
The Berkeley County Library System and the Friends of the Library will be working with the Berkeley County School District and the Town of St. Stephen to host an outdoor movie celebration.
Please call 843-351-4674 to volunteer. Your help is appreciated.

St. Stephen Community Celebrates First Graduating Class of Berkeley Career Express Program The Berkeley Career Express (BCE) program, funded by a Google Data Center Community Affairs Grant, is a collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce, Library System, and the Department of Adult and Community Education. The program is designed to enhance digital literacy skills in the communities of St. Stephen, Cross, Alvin and Long Ridge. On the night of March 28th, community leaders, families and friends gathered to celebrate the thirty-eight BCE students with a graduation ceremony. Speakers included Mayor John Rivers, principle of St. Stephen Elementary Dr. Elaine Norton, library director Gene Brunson, and retired IGA owner and community champion Mr. Eddie Brown.

Mayor John Rivers comments, “The Town of St. Stephen is elated over the recent developments in a new industry coming to our Town and now a program to assist our residents at being more work-ready.” Several of the speakers commented on the large number of graduates. “I was so thrilled at the turnout for our first night. Berkeley County Adult Education is enthusiastic about this program for the Berkeley County residents and working with them to prepare for the job market,” expressed by Dr. Lillie Caldwell, Director of Adult Community Education. Dr. Caldwell explains, “We were hoping to have at least 20 people interested. We did not expect to have 50 that first night.” Among the graduates were sisters, Norma Russel and Margaret Conway, both of whom crossed the stage for their certificate with joyful smiles and homemade graduation caps. Conway tears up while talking about how this program brought them closer together. “We did not grow up together. This was the first time we could go to school together. To share this experience as sisters, encouraging one another, is something special.” Conway also talks about the complexity of the program, “I didn’t think I would make it through the whole thing. I have been out of school for so long. The math was really challenging.” She says she has become a fixture at the St. Stephen Library going in everyday to study. She has even volunteered to help the next BCE graduating class make their own caps.

Can You Help Us Find Miles? Miles the bookworm always loved to read. He loved to read short books, long books, funny books, and scary books. Miles even loved to read the back of the cereal box! Yes sir, if he could read it he would. That’s why the day Miles met M.O.R.E. the Mobile Library was the day Miles knew he had found his best friend. M.O.R.E. loved to read just as much as Miles, and, even better, loved to encourage others to read. It was no wonder that they made a dynamic pair, and it was no surprise when the library staff recruited them to travel across Berkeley County in search of readers and non-readers alike. M.O.R.E. and Miles’s love for reading was contagious, and those who came to visit them couldn’t help but catch it.
Can you help me? #FindMiles
One day, during one of their many adventures in Berkeley County, M.O.R.E. and Miles found a nice, cozy spot to wait for new friends to come visit. While M.O.R.E. had his nose buried in a book, Miles decided to explore the area. Miles found all sorts of wonderful things: new signs to read, fun things to climb on, and these really cute rocks that someone had painted (claiming their community “rocked”). Miles’s curiosity drew him further and further from his friend M.O.R.E. It wasn’t until the sun started setting that Miles realized he couldn’t see his friend; he didn’t even know where he was. Worried, Miles tried to remember what direction he had come from, but with all his exploring, Miles hadn’t paid much attention to where he was going. He was lost! Miles sat right where he was and started to cry. How was he going to get home? How was he going to find his best friend, M.O.R.E., again? Miles the Bookworm wished he could meet a friend to help him find his way… Berkeley County Library staff and M.O.R.E. need your help! Our sweet Miles the Bookworm is lost somewhere in Berkeley County, and we need your help in finding him. If you find Miles, please bring him to any of the Berkeley County Libraries to help us reunite with him (and to receive a small gift of appreciation). Please hurry, as M.O.R.E. is desperately missing his friend!
If you find Miles, please snap a pic and post it on Facebook, #FindMiles, then bring him into any BCLS Library for a prize!
