What’s Happenin’ The latest news and resources at your library.

What’s Cooking at St. Stephen Written by Tina Chenoweth, St. Stephen Library Branch Manager So it all started with cake decorating.... Last year, Tina, the newly minted manager of the St. Stephen Library, had literally no idea what kinds of programs she should offer at her branch, so she tried a variety of different programs to see what would stick. She simply observed the turnouts and silently gathered feedback. But when the cake decorating program took place, the normally sleepy little library was overrun with customers of all ages, clamoring for a chance to decorate cakes with Ms. Owens, our guest baker from the IGA grocery store. And thus began St. Stephen Library’s obsession with cooking programs. Since that first program, the branch has hosted several different kinds of cooking programs, including: • Candy sushi • Egg rolls • Tofu • Homemade pasta • No bake holiday treats And they have more cooking programs that will be featured in their upcoming Cooking Academy series. Cookie decorating, sushi (nothing raw!), and a Downton Abbey style “high tea” are on the menu this winter.

“Everyone was saying negative things when I tried to talk them into coming to our tofu program – but the dishes prepared were totally healthy and delicious!” Vickie S. St. Stephen Library Staff

Food and cooking are social events; they bring people together, in more ways than one. Learning about other cultures through food and cooking is a wonderful bonus. Furthermore, in rural areas, poor diet, obesity, and diet-related illnesses, such as diabetes, are extremely prevalent, and the library seeks to inform as well as entertain attendees at cooking programs. With all of the artificial and potentially harmful ingredients in food these days, we could all stand to be more cooking literate and aware of what goes into our dishes. So come and learn how to prepare healthy and delicious food at your library, Mr. Owens from IGA through cooking programs as well as a great grocery store gives selection of cookbooks. cake decorating tips at library program. Check the Family section for Cooking

Academy program dates and times.

Many attendees travel distances to attend the cooking programs at St. Stephen, and many library staff and family members are also fans. The staff at the St. Stephen branch offer some theories behind the popularity of cooking programs. Donna T. reported that a family member signs up for every single cooking program offered and looks forward to attending. “For the homemade pasta program, he didn’t feel well on that day, but he came anyway – and was glad he did because he had a blast!” Vickie S. said that she learned how to eat something – namely tofu – that she originally thought was disgusting!

Even when stranded at home with my car in the shop, I feel very thankful to Ms. Aubrey Carson, the technology instructor at my Berkeley Public Library System, for teaching me how to watch a movie off the library site! She taught me how to use my cell phone, how to navigate the internet on it, and on my laptop especially pointing out their different specific usage! Coming to Ms. Aubrey’s sessions hasopened up a new world that was hidden by my inability to catch up with the quick and forever changing technology! I have learned so much that I am now not only referring others to Ms. Aubrey but teaching them what I’ve learned!

Ms. Aubrey is very patient, passionate, and such a symbol of what my Library System stands for! Ms. Aubrey has such an ability to translate any question that I have quickly into what I meant to ask with such an amazing, calm manner! I take notes to practice at home! I originally came to Ms. Aubrey when I failed a much needed refresher course that would have helped me return to the work force! Ms. Aubrey, calmly reminded me that I was able to learn, and the fact that I came to the library sessions for assistance was proof enough for her! She was very encouraging, and she researched educational sites for me to practice. She would sit next to me or kneel by my chair to make sure that I was navigating correctly! Noticing how she allowed me to ask questions even when I used every day words, I felt more at ease, especially seeing how she was able to decipher them, and to brilliantly turn them into technological ones! I then began to keep notes in my trusted notebook so I could practice at home! I was horrified when I lost that notebook, but I quickly obtained another one and caught up! I passed the didactic portion but had not finished the course due to a set back, but when I informed her, she simply said: “I know you are going back to finish”...and I am!

Words From Our Customers

Where do I begin? Simply put, this lottery of kind people who work at the St. Stephen Library are amazing, and so are the people who come and go. As I am in here every day, I always know they’ve returned. This library has been there for me in tough times. When I was browsing the web, or picking out a good read, often I was always going through so much. But I walk in here and I see family. I’ve found friendships. The library’s love filled the gaps whenever I was down or struggling with something in my life. I walk in, and get smiles all around. Someday, I plan to get kissed by my girlfriend underneath the stars at a Movie Under the Stars. Holidays here are just amazing, so much fun! The things I’ve learned here at this library are simple: stay uplifted, stay knowledgeable, and spread the love. Thank you to all the workers here, and thank you, my library, for holding all of us together.” ~ Christian Q.

I could go on and on praising Aubrey and her ability to teach the sessions, that it would take pages and pages to describe how every session spent with her went, whether I am the only person or others are present! At times I wished no one else had signed up just so that I could have her all to myself, because for however long a session would last, she would still ask if someone had an unanswered question! Ms. Aubrey is to be highly praised for her role in enriching the minds of our citizens through the Berkeley Library System, and I feel very privileged to have her teach me. Everyone thinks that I am so smart, and it’s because of her!” ~ Nicole L.

College, Scholarship, Study, and Career Guides @Your Library Written by BriAnne Baxley Young Adult Librarian For any high school junior and senior, the idea of being so close to graduation can be pretty exciting. For many, it means a chance to chase passions, experience new things, and make dreams a reality. However, with all that excitement there is a hint of fear that comes with it because, let’s face it, learning to be an adult can be sometimes scary and overwhelming. Trust me, there are times when I just want to go back to the good old days of blanket forts and Disney movie marathons. (Okay, so maybe I still do that now in my 30s, but you get my drift.) So in order to help you find your way into this new world of adulthood, I thought I would

Wednesdays, 4:30 - 5:30 pm Dec. 13th provide you all with what I believe are some great resources we provide here at BCLS. Universal Class I don’t know about you all, but when I was in high school trying to find what I wanted to do for the rest of my life seemed a little bit daunting. What if I picked wrong? What if I wasn’t good at it? Even worse, what if I had to do math for the rest of my life?! Luckily for me, I was able to find my way, but I promise you it was no easy task. So my great suggestion to you all is to try to explore new passions. Universal Class can help with just that! Universal Class provides a great selection of online courses on all sorts of different subjects. If you think the medical profession is right for you why not take free courses on Anatomy and Physiology 101 or Introduction to Medical Coding to see if that is something you would want to study. My favorite is Baking Pies 101! It’s free, can be worked around your busy social life, and you get Continuing Education Credit for it that could help build up your job resume. This resource is also fantastic because if you really struggle with a subject, like me and math, you can take courses to help you practice these skills before you set out into the workforce or college scenes. you have to check off a few things on your to-do list like taking the ACT, SAT, and any AP exams you might want credit for. Purchasing those prep books can get costly and while we have some here at the library, getting your hands on the materials may be a challenge. As long as you have access to a computer, the internet, and your library card, you will have access to prep materials 24-hours a day. LearningExpress has some great features such as interactive lessons and practice exercises. Honestly, I wish I had these resources years ago when I was getting ready! Now of course once you are all done with your test, it’s time to prepare that college admissions essay. One of my other favorite options on LearningExpress is their eBooks on how to write your essay and how to proofread, revise, and edit your work. It never hurts to have Continue on page 11

Tenth Annual Harvest Tour of Homes Raises Funds for Daniel Island Library Written by Timothy Boyle, Daniel Island Library Branch Manager It was a big week for the Daniel Island Library late in October, when the Harvest Tour presented its tenth annual selection of houses to tour and authors to meet. For this tenth tour, celebrating the branch’s tenth anniversary, the organizers had to “pull out all the stops”, according to founder Mary Ann Solberg. Top local authors awaited curious visitors in each of the four featured houses, including national bestseller Mary Alice Monroe (Beach House for Rent), Daniel Island’s own Eva Dillon (Spies in the Family), Charleston chef Frank Lee (The S.N.O.B. Experience), and teen favorite adventure writer, J.E.Thompson (The Girl from Felony Bay). Visitors were not disappointed. Proceeds from the Annual Harvest Home Tour benefit the Daniel Island library, providing the branch with its parking lot book drop, for example, as well as footing the bill for the books in their successful Book Club Kit program, and purchasing supplies for the many events held at the branch. Over $150,000 has been raised by the Tour since 2007. Also on the agenda that week was the dedication of the new Reading Garden along the path leading from the parking lot to the front doors. With funding from the Daniel Island Community Fund and the Home Tour, and with the volunteer expertise and labor of many on the Island, beautiful plants and flowers lined the path as it wound its way past three new benches for reading and enjoying the garden. A new gravel path was also laid down through the wooded grounds of the branch, leading

straight to the library from the neighboring Daniel Island School. Spectators and county officials gathered to watch as Vicki Danziger, originator of the garden, unveiled a plaque with a flourish, officially opening the garden. It was no coincidence, then, that Supervisor Peagler and the County Council had proclaimed the day “Daniel Island Library Day in Berkeley County”.

Library Hosts Successful Genealogy Event with Berkeley DAR and SAR

Genealogy enthusiasts attend “Tapping Your Roots” community event co-hosted by library with DAR and SAR in Moncks Corner.

Written by Kristen Lanier, BCLS Marketing and PR Coordinator BCLS recently partnered with the General Marion’s Brigade Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Colonel Hezekiah Maham Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) for a genealogy event, “Tapping into Your Roots.” This first-time partnership proved fruitful drawing over 75 people to the Moncks Corner Train Depot on Saturday, October 7th. Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about free resources available for researching family history and creating their own family tree. In addition, guests were able to learn about the local chapters of the NSDAR and NSSAR and how to get involved. Pam Herndon, President of General Marion’s Brigade NSAR chapter, explains how this event came to be. “With the increasing population growth and focus on the rich history in Berkeley County, members of General Marion's Brigade, NSDAR, saw a need to not only increase public awareness of the group's presence in Berkeley County, but to educate those interested in what DAR is all about.” From then on, the organization looked for other community groups to work with. Soon the Col. Hezekiah Maham Chapter of the SAR agreed to collaborate, as well as the LDS Church Family Search Center, and the Children of the American Revolution (CAR). When the DAR began envisioning the community event, the idea of educating the community on multiple research services evolved and a

partnership with the library system, who offers multiple resources for genealogy, seemed like the perfect addition. Herndon said, “Vice Regent Harriet Coleman of General Marion's Brigade, NSDAR, works for the Berkeley County Library System and coordinated the involvement of BCLS to share the library's available resources.” When given the opportunity to partner, BCLS thought it was a great way to showcase some of the library’s resources for ancestry research. Ramona Grimsley, historian and archivist for BCLS, comments, “In this age of the Internet, don’t discount your local library. Not all genealogy sites are free. We subscribe to several genealogy databases for you, our customers. Also, The South Carolina Room provides access to many one-of-a-kind print materials that may help with filling in your family tree!” At the October event, attendees were able to meet with research experts for general questions and research tips, however, many came with very specific questions about a particular family member. Grimsley served as a research expert at the October event. Given the multitude of specific requests, she took down attendees information to do additional research and help for them after the event. Attendees seemed to really enjoy the social aspect of the event and stayed the entire time to talk with other genealogy enthusiasts. Due to the success of the event, a second one has been planned in February in honor of Black History Month. The follow up event will be hosted at a larger venue and feature more research experts to offer more one-on-one time with attendees. For details on the follow up event in February, see page 9 or 11 or berkeleylibrarysc.org/tapping

For instance, do you have the right grades, access to the necessary resources, and the biggest one, are you financially able to make that step? For many ,it’s

not about not wanting to go but how to get there. That’s why in our day in age we are lucky to have the option to take online college classes. There are programs all over that provide online programs that can work with your time. That means you can go to school AND work that full-time job if need be. That’s why our Center for Online Education is a great resource to use when trying to find the right fit for you. Search by degree, categories, and subject matters that interest you, and they will provide you with an online college that might work for you. F R I E N D S

President’s Post-It Fall 2017 has been great for the Friends. We were the recipients of $1,000 thanks to Blackbaud and the Charleston Battery. The Friends have had two very successful book sales at Goose Creek Library and Moncks Corner Library. Many, many thanks to everyone who shopped at the sales. We also did the popcorn and drink concessions at Movies Under the Stars. Several new members have signed on and many renewals have come through. With these, we have discovered many different talents and lots of willingness to volunteer. All these help the FOL to fund the outstanding programs that the Berkeley County Libraries present. Santa will be stopping in at the different branches. My understanding is that he’s finishing his naughty and nice list!! Be sure and bring the children and have their pictures made with Ole Santa. The Friends will be taking the photos and printing your choice. The “Elves” from the Friends will again be participating in Celebrate the Season with Santa and selling marshmallows on a stick and S’Mores at the fire pit. Please see the Moncks Corner website or FB page for updates on Celebrate the Season. FOL will also participate in the Craft Bazaar for Berkeley County on December 7. We’ll have a variety of crafts to sell. If you do a craft of any kind and would like to donate one, please call 843-351-4674. We would love to have more. Again, we do appreciate new members. Your talent or expertise can really be of value to your Library System. We want to grow even more as our county grows. Please consider becoming a member of the Friends. There are membership envelopes available at the branches; you can also join through PayPal online on our website.
