BEHIND THE LENS TOP PRO TIPS FOR 2022 POLAR PLUNGE WINEMAKER’S DINNER

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE On the South Course, our new fairways have greatly enhanced Club play, and I’m pleased to say the South Course is performing at its top peak condition in 20 years.

We’re also excited to unveil updates to the River Park, which will be open by the end of the first quarter, so stay tuned for more news there. Other Club projects include renovation of the halfway houses as we implement new technology for a more-user friendly and efficient operation, while at the Fitness Center new equipment is on order for the first and second quarter.

As we embark on the new year, it’s exciting to consider the incredible change and momentum we’ve experienced in 2020-2021. Our community voted in favor of the Master Plan: Phase I and due to our success, we will be able to implement portions of Phase II. Together, we can look forward to the Spring completion of Phase I, and Phase II will not be far behind. Planning for this rejuvenation began five years ago, and 2022-2023 are going to be the years that it truly comes to fruition.

We also welcomed well over 100 new members to the Club, and look forward to more new neighbors with current contracts pending on over 80 clubowned lots. Add the completion of 10 or so spec homes going up on club-owned lots, and we should have nearly 20 additional spec homes under construction by end of 2022.

As we strive to better understand member expectations and overall satisfaction, we recently sent a member survey out that encompasses the entire Club. We’re excited to garner member response so we can best enhance the member experience as well as update important aspects of our strategic plan.

Golf Digest’s “Best in State” 2022-2023 teacher rankings are out and our very own Krista Dunton is among South Carolina’s top five best instructors.

The Top 50 LPGA Teachers are recognized from more than 1,800 LPGA certified professionals worldwide. LPGA Professionals are uniquely trained to teach golf through a holistic peoplecentered approach to learning the game and performing on the golf course.

When it comes to golf instruction, this PGA and LPGA member is top in her field. As Director of Instruction at our award-winning Learning Center, she is nationally recognized as one of the best teachers in the game. A former LPGA “National Teacher of the Year,” Krista holds the distinction of being listed multiple times as a “Top 100 Instructor” and “Top 100 Teachers in America” by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest.

ON THE RANGE: TIMELESS BEAUTY

Our new pedestal clock on the warmup range is a handsome addition to the practice area. Timeless in stature, it’s also one of the Club’s new enhancements, courtesy of the 34th U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship this past September. Other features will include three flagpoles placed on the front mall, a new podium for the bag drop, new cooler for the warm-up range, and other additional items.

We were honored to host the Women’s Mid-Am, and the tremendous support from our membership demonstrates what an incredible community we are.

In 2017, we committed to not use any income from general operating funds for the tournament. Thanks to many individual donors, our Championship Finance Chair Marc Dulude and his team, we made that a reality. Postponing the Championship also generated additional funds from new members and USGA contributions.

The goal was to raise $200,000, and with the second USGA contribution, we exceeded that by $80,000. Funds raised also covered labor expenses for our teams that worked so hard to ensure everyone from the USGA and all participants left saying that “Berkeley Hall was the best venue they’d ever experienced.”

Each year monies raised from Berkeley Hall residents and local business partners at the annual Charity Cup event

Your participation has provided the BHCF with the means to truly make a difference in our greater community, and through our Grant process has been distributed to people in need in our community. Of each dollar raised, 95% is allocated to our charities.

2021 FUNDING FOR 2022 PROJECTS WILL SERVE Abuse Prevention - $20,000

Our 2021 Charity Cup event exceeded expectations, raising more than $350,000. So far we've allocated $295,000 in much-needed grants to local charities, and will be able to do even more, as needs arise during the year. The more funds raised, the more the foundation can do to help those in need in our community, and the need is greater than ever.

Elizabeth’s work casts an intimate view of our “local life.” Immersed in the Lowcountry’s rhythms, she’s often photographing in the very hours when all is still. “I love when the sun comes up and all is magical. Here at Berkeley Hall, we get a lot of those kinds of mornings.”

She finds many of our friends at home among the waters, foliage and native marsh grasses. As the ever-changing hues of nature form her palette, she brings this world into view for the rest of us.

The year was filled with many great events and well-enjoyed member play throughout the year. We hosted a fabulous USGA event in September that was well received by all the players and a great boost for Berkeley Hall. Tournament participation

We start the 2022 season with the Berkeley Cup in late February, followed by the Mixed Member-Member in March, the Member-Member in April and the newly added Mixed

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

We had another great turnout for the HAIG at the start of November. 54 pairs took to the course to test their skills against some of the more difficult hole locations out there. Mother Nature also played a hand in this year’s event, with some cool, breezy and damp conditions. The weather dictated that the event be cut short to just 18 holes. We still had some great scoring across all of the flights and the overall winners were: Men: Pat Annessa & Wayne Hoffman Ladies: Linda Gettings & Lise Shanahan

WOMEN’S INVITATIONAL

2021 Women’s Invitational saw a record number of teams. It was great to see so many coming out for this event. Many teams we’ve seen in years past, but also many new teams. We were blessed with two fabulous days of weather in mid-November, and the scoring did not disappoint. The team of Jill Appel, Susan Yahn, Deb Cadogan & Marj Lustig took home the Overall Winners trophy.

We look forward to another great event in 2022.

CLUB CHALLENGE Berkeley Hall had three great days for the 2021 Club Challenge at the start of December. The weather was absolutely glorious for the 25 teams that battled it out for the honors. It was during the course of a Saturday golf game that John Swafford and fellow Berkeley Hall member Bill Minsker discovered that not only had they both resided in West Virginia (Swafford briefly), they also both attended St. Albans High School, in slightly different years!

Another distinction they share, both were inducted into their St. Albans High School Hall of Fame. Bill was first inducted in 1998, and he put John forward this year as a distinguished alumnus. Bill, we might add, was a mostly lifetime resident of West Virginia, with a highly successful career in the automotive dealership industry, before moving to Berkeley Hall with wife Mary Kay in 2007.

As it turns out, BHC part-time member Dr. Austin Wallace is also from St. Albans, West Virginia, the three discovered recently. Austin and his wife Deborah first bought a lot in 2003, then purchased a cottage on Hopsewee in 2018, (sold and purchased another cottage this past April). Dr. Wallace was an ear, nose and throat surgeon in Charleston, WV, prior to joining the West Virginia Mutual Insurance Co. as CEO, which is based in Charleston. With plans to retire next November, we expect to see more of him on the course!

Perspective is everything.

Most of us think we hit the ball better on the driving range than on the golf course. This is because there are no consequences for hitting a bad shot on the driving range and if we make solid contact we assume it would be a good shot. However, the solid shot may have been 20 yards to the left or right of where you aimed on the range and may result in a less than desirable shot on course.

When practicing full shots, use an alignment stick to pick out a specific target. Practicing without an alignment stick or lines on the ground is comparable to driving on a multi-lane highway without lines. Having a target offers perspective of where your shots are starting and ending up and trains you to pick out specific targets throughout your round. Remember, smaller targets yield smaller misses.

Don’t forget to work on your fundamentals…

Winter is a great time to practice your game.

It is tough to play good golf without good set up fundamentals. It might seem boring and unnecessary to work on them and practice them, but they will set you up for success.

Grip, aim, posture, balance, ball position, distance from the ball, are all details that you can work on before you even hit a ball and having them consistent will make playing good golf much easier. Know what works for you, so that if you are having a bad day you can re-settle and get back to basics!

If you can’t hit the course on cooler days, find your buddies and get some practice in at the learning center!

A fun chipping game I like to play is called 7UP. It can be played with 2 or more players. Bring 1 wedge and a putter to the chipping green. The objective is to make Up & Downs. If you make the Up & Down you go 1UP, if you miss it you go 1Down. The winner is the first one to make it to 7UP. Playing partners take turns picking holes. This game simulates on-course play and it’s a great way to add a competitive edge to practicing!

Practice like you play I often get asked, “Why can I hit good shots on the Practice Tee without being able to translate it to the Golf Course?” When practicing, we get the ability to hit shot-after-shot with minimal pressure on where the golf ball is going. While on the golf course, we only get one take at a shot, with a few minutes in between swings.

Next time you go out to practice, try playing the golf course on the Practice Tee! Once confident in what you are working on, try hitting each shot with a different club, to a different target.

This will force you to focus on what you’re doing, rather than recalling the last motor pattern you executed.

One of the best tools in golf whether during practice or warm-up is an alignment rod. Using an alignment rod will help with making sure you are set up square to the target and your golf ball starts on the intended target line.

s we look forward to the new year, the Agronomy team is hard at work preparing the North and South Courses for the winter months and into 2022.

We’ve seen a great deal of success this year as we implemented new agronomy practices. Now, with the history and course knowledge gained, our team can move forward even more proactively.

With all our exciting improvements ahead, we remain committed to continually improving operations.

The new strategic plan we’ve developed will guide and help us plan these projects. As we work on options and plans for improving and making the North Course native areas more playable and maintenance friendly, we’ll begin by installing more native grass trials this winter. The planned expansion of the Fazio putting green, with renovations to the short-game area on the warm-up side of the range and other upgrades at the practice facility will further enhance members playing experience.

TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU STICK TO NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

We’ve all been there: The decorations are put away and the pressure is on for the “new year, new you.” Instead of becoming frustrated when your best efforts are abandoned

by February, try these tips to achieve your goals!

BE SPECIFIC

A common resolution is to “eat better” in the new year. This is a great place to start, but hard to gauge progress when the goal is so broad.

• Eat 2-3 servings of vegetables every day • Drink 8 oz of water every hour

REWARD YOURSELF • Find a non-food reward, i.e. massage or new pair of shoes!

FIND BALANCE A goal everyone should work toward in 2022 is maintaining or improving core strength and balance. A recent study found those 50-yrs and older may find it hard to stand on one foot for 40 seconds. Poor balance doesn’t always coincide with age, it’s related to muscle mass, agility, and strength.

Try these simple ways to improve balance and strengthen your core: • Try pilates, tai chi, or yoga which can strengthen the deep core muscles while synchronizing the movement with your breathing.

• Practice standing on one foot, challenging yourself to increase duration. Increase the challenge by raising your foot higher or holding out to the side. If difficult, start by using a chair back or bathroom counter for support.

January 1st doesn’t have to be the only day to set goals. Make each day a new effort to become the best version of you!

• Walk heel-to-toe, as if on a balance beam.

• Get in and out of a chair without using your hands.

• Exercise while standing on a wobble board or Bosu ball.
