DOCKSIDE PICNIC ON THE GREENS SUMMER LUAU & PIG ROAST JULY 4TH CELEBRATION

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE our third decade is our strongest yet. Jeff Dekruif, Assistant GM/CFO, has made an immediate impact, introducing new technology to the Club and diving into an updated Capital Reserve Study that will serve as our path forward to properly maintain assets for the next decade and beyond. On the Agronomy front, we’re excited to have Adam Miller join us as Director of Agronomy. He’s already had a headstart evaluating our golf courses with a fresh set of eyes and is looking forward to implementing new summer agronomy practices to rework our soils and prepare for the winter months. As we round our way into the summer, we are underway with the Veranda expansion and seeing a bit of an expansion all over Berkeley Hall, with new homes and new members. Fortunately, the desire to live in the Lowcountry, coupled with the ability to work from home continues to be strong. Overall, we anticipate a record year for the Club with up to 15 home submissions this summer alone. As Phase 1 of the Master Plan progresses, it’s rewarding to see our enhanced Mixed Grille and beautiful Veranda develop before our eyes. Peacock + Lewis architects have brought their exceptional vision to our Club and Choate is well on their way to making our vision a reality. Beyond Phase 1, we have active committees focused on future projects pertaining to the Clubhouse, golf courses and Fitness Center, as we endeavor to continually enhance the member experience at Berkeley Hall. As 2021 nears the halfway point, our team has taken many steps to ensure that

Dog lovers are eagerly anticipating our Barkeley Hall Dog Park and their pooches are pretty happy too! As plans for the River Park are finalized, along with additional parking plans for the Fitness Center, we find our amenities are becoming more fully integrated with the needs and desires of the community.

Our drive towards 500 homes in 2025 is starting to look more like a reality every day. While construction brings its share of challenges, the end result will be a vibrant, beautiful community we’re all excited to call home. The future is bright here at Berkeley Hall and with a shared vision for the future, we look forward to all the good days ahead with you, in our very special Lowcountry community.

Adam Miller has joined the Berkeley Hall team as Director of Agronomy. Extremely wellregarded in the field of Agronomy, Adam brings several years of valuable experience at some of the top Clubs throughout the East Coast. His expertise coupled with a strong

business and operational acumen will serve us well in his new role with Berkeley Hall. Most recently, Adam served as the Director of Grounds & Facilities and Interim General Manager with Bethesda Country Club in Maryland. During his tenure, he is credited with returning the BCC golf course to an exceptional level, successfully leading the transformation of greens and fairways from dyer straights to pristine conditions in just six months. He

also completed a Better Billy Bunker renovation, and elevated course conditions to rival some of the toughest competition in the Mid-Atlantic. Prior to that, he served as South Golf Course Superintendent with Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, and as an Assistant Superintendent at Kinloch Golf Club in Virginia. We wish Adam great success in his new position.

Shovel-ready, Berkeley Hall’s Board of Directors gathered with excited members for the official groundbreaking of our new 4-Seasons Veranda on Friday, April 9th. Embarking on Phase I of our $5.1M Master Plan, the reimagined Clubhouse features construction of the 4-Seasons Veranda, a renovated Mixed Grille dining venue and kitchen upgrade, with upscale design that takes full advantage of the panoramic golf course views. Refinements in the Grand Hall entry further add to the graciously welcoming ambiance and reflect our new casual, Lowcountry design. Construction of the nearly 5,000 square foot addition extends off the former Grand Hallway, at an elevated, seamless level to provide year-round dining in a climate-controlled environment. Here, members can gather for casual dining any time of day. Whether enjoying drinks and light bites after finishing a round or a glass of wine and gourmet dining as the sun sets, the versatile design and interior climate controls offer full Veranda use no matter the season, with views onto the North Course #9th and #18th holes. The reimagined Mixed Grille will serve as the more formal dining venue to the

Board President. “Board and management are committed to meeting the evolving demands of our membership by investing in our future. Implementation of the Master Plan represents a cornerstone piece of our efforts to enhance the overall member experience.”

Veranda, with a relaxed sophistication and comfort. The well-designed venues flow into one another for an expanded dining capacity, with the flexibility to accommodate larger Club gatherings and special events. With an influx of new members during this past year, Berkeley Hall’s membership is a growing one. One of their shared sentiments was the desire to find a forward-thinking community. Phase I demonstrated that commitment to club investment, and the response was overwhelmingly in favor. “The time is now,” said Keith Patten,

The exterior is slated for Fall completion with full occupancy and use by Spring/Summer of 2022. The Clubhouse and dining in the formal Mixed Grille, casual Tap Room bar bistro, and private Tuscan Wine Room, will remain open for the majority of the construction period, allowing members to enjoy dining and Club amenities. In tandem with Phase I, the Club’s two Fazio-designed golf courses are also seeing a return to their pristine original vision, with the direction of the Fazio Design group and Berkeley Hall’s Agronomy team. “Phase I is an important aspect of assuring Berkeley Hall Club is in harmony with our membership,” said Adam Kushner, General Manager and COO. “Having just celebrated our 20th anniversary, we are excited by the exceptional vision Peacock + Lewis architects have brought to our Club, joined by Choate’s team, as we usher in a new era at Berkeley Hall.”

KIERAN STAUNTON | DIRECTOR OF GOLF e were blessed with some fabulous weather for March and April. Always a wonderful time of year in the Lowcountry for golf, this year was no different. We had record turnouts for all of our Spring events, which has been great to see. We are always looking at new events to add to the calendar to move with the ever-evolving membership demographic, so keep an eye out for some new golf experiences in the

coming season. The Clubhouse renovation that has just begun will have a slight impact on our golfing for the next few months, but we will be keeping this to a minimum as best we can. The bag drop will continue to operate as normal to keep the members’ needs serviced during the duration. Even though the Summer is just beginning, we are already getting in gear for our great Fall golf events. The North-South Challenge, The Berkeley Classic, The Women’s

The Women’s U.S. Mid-Amateur at Berkeley Hall is fast approaching. The Championship will be played on our North Course in late September, and we are looking forward to putting on a great event! We are still accepting volunteer registrations. If you would like to volunteer to help with the event, please see more details below.

WITH KRISTA DUNTON May 26-28 | June 17-19 | Aug 30-Sept 1 | Sept 16-18 | $1,750/pp Non-Member | $1,550/pp Member Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because

everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.” Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best. “We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”

We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.

BERKELEY HALL

GOLF ACADEMY

DAY 1

We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to. DAY 2

The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure. DAY 3

How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently. “We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories – so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

MAINTENANCE UPDATE

SUMMER MAINTENANCE ummer is the busiest time of year for golf course superintendents and their teams across the Southeast. Bermuda grass begins to grow aggressively when evening temperatures reach 65 degrees. This allows the agronomy team to begin its summertime cultural practices such as vertical mowing, aeration, and top-dressing. Good cultural practices are the necessary evil to produce consistent conditions. Disturbing the surface during the summer allows us to provide great playing conditions the other nine months of the year. These practices must occur in the summer to ensure turfgrass recovery. This past winter, persistent overcast skies, above average rainfall, and below average temperatures created a difficult environment for turfgrass survival. Such conditions highlight the need to always prepare for the unexpected wet winters that occur in the Lowcountry. The biggest challenge Berkeley Hall faces is the foundation it is built on. The heavy clay soils are great when dry but when 20

BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM

consistently wet weather occurs the clay soil struggles to dry out. Our goal this summer is to help our soils allow water to get to the drains. The cultural practice of aeration and sand topdressing improves soil conditions, by removing the clay and silt particles and replacing it with a coarse sand. This improves water infiltration and allows water down into the drainage system. In addition, these sand channels provide an unrestricted pathway for turfgrass roots to grow. Aeration is most important on greens. Low mowing heights puts a lot of stress on the turfgrass, and it is crucial that the plant can grow roots to endure the stress from Mother Nature and what we mechanically put on the greens. Our goal during the aeration process is to remove upwards of 25% of the putting surface and replace that with fresh sand. This enables the sand base soil to persist throughout the expected life expectancy. These practices provide high percolation rates which in turn prevent saturation to the playing surface and help maintain a

healthy turfgrass root system. This will assist in turfgrass survival during the difficult winter months. With our commitment to improve course conditions and keeping this past winter in mind, the summer maintenance practices will be very extensive.

SUMMER MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE MAY 16-19 (South Course closed for aeration) JUNE 1-30 (North Course closed) JULY 12-AUGUST 11 (South Course closed)

I’m from Escondido, CA, about 30 miles north of San Diego. The personal training center with plenty of room to set up a circuit. But the nicest area is the front check in, with friendly faces as I arrive and leave. A 3 or 4-part circuit and biking outdoors. I work with Jordan, three times a week and it really makes all the difference – he is so encouraging, challenging, adaptable, helpful, knowledgeable, and fun! We found a way to safely work out at the Fitness Center during the Covid challenge, and Jordan quickly learned how to provide me with a training session that meets my goals, abilities and limitations. I still have a body that loves to work out hard and one I can keep pushing. Mexican Food.

I love to travel. In high school, I was chosen to be an exchange student to Lima, Peru. In college, I spent a semester studying in Mexico City and living with a family there. Spanish was my college major. I love learning about other cultures and people.

The benefits of personal training are as personal as you are. Berkeley Hall’s full roster of trainers are well-versed in fitness training and innovative sports medicine, and our team offers wellness programs tailored to your individual needs and goals. Stop by the Fitness Center and schedule a session and let us take you to new heights on your fitness journey by motiving, educating and challenging you.
