USGA LOOK BACK: BHC GOLFERS NORTH COURSE: 20 YEAR CELEBRATION CHARITY CUP 2021 SPOTLIGHT: BHCF LEADERS BHC FALL FEST

FROM THE CLUBHOUSE At the same time, we are working closely with our building partners, as they get started on spec homes and create supply for all the demand we continue to see. The Reed Group has begun their first two homes on Good Hope Road, and ARB has currently approved three plans with multiple elevations for the Lifestyle Section. We have also closed on our first five lots in the Lifestyle Section and construction should start shortly.

What an exciting Fall 2021 we have ahead of. First, the U.S. Women’s Mid-Am Championship, followed by the 20th anniversary of the North Course, and a full roster of Club Men’s and Ladies’ Member-Guests. I would like to offer my immense thanks to our U.S. Mid-Am Committee Chairs and Volunteers whose tireless efforts have led the way to hosting a terrific USGA Championship. Hosting a national championship is a tremendous honor and commitment for the Club, and I could not be more impressed with the way our members and staff stepped forward to ensure that Berkeley Hall shows well to the international world of golf. Once again, I’m struck by the energy and activity at the Club. The dynamic, growing support members have shown for golf, racquet and social activities, is really exciting to see. Although we remain a small community, I love to see the genuine camaraderie that surrounds the Club and am most excited to see everyone enjoying the Veranda and Mixed Grille when they’re completed in 2022. In regard to Phase 1 construction, we look forward to a productive fall, as we complete the building exterior and begin work on the interiors, landscaping and hardscaping. 2

BERKELEYHALLCLUB.COM

I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to the ARB Committee for the remarkable amount of time and effort they have put into this community. ARB is by far the most time-consuming committee, and they have been tasked with a whole new set of responsibilities as we move forward with several spec homes versus the 10-12 member homes we’ve seen over the past decade. With these great new options, Berkeley Hall continues to be an even better fit for all the prospective members we are welcoming to the Club. With deepest appreciation, I’d like to thank the team at Berkeley Hall for all their efforts over the past 18 months. Through COVID, construction and labor shortages, we’ve continued to press forward. While we remain committed to future goals and aspirations, the attitude and resilience of our team is very rewarding to see. From our culinary staff to golf operations and agronomy, their commitment and dedication has been unwavering. This continues to make me exceedingly proud, and I know our members join me in applauding and recognizing our incredible team. With cooler temps and many exciting events to take part in, I look forward to sharing our special place in the Lowcountry with all of you this season!

Berkeley Hall member Ret. U.S. Air Force Four-Star General Lloyd "Fig" Newton has led a highly distinguished military career. Of course, General Newton is well known around our Berkeley Hall community as our BHC neighbor. Passionate about education, he currently serves as board chairman for Ridgeland-based Polaris Tech charter school, and his success story is the inspiration for his recently released book, Living the Dream, The Story of Lloyd W. "Fig" Newton. In the recent August issue of Monthly magazine, editor Anthony Garzilli offers an in-depth view of his impactful career and life story in Reach for the Sky. (You can pick up a copy of the magazine at the concierge desk, or find the full story on our member website BerkeleyHallClub.com.)

Travel + Leisure's "Best Small Towns in the South" List

Yes, we're on it! We love our special spot in the Lowcountry! So it's no surprise to us that Bluffton is #8 on Travel + Leisure's “Best Small Towns in the South” list! “This seaside town is home to upscale resort communities surrounded by old oak trees, Spanish moss, and resurrection ferns,” says Travel + Leisure. Of course, we already know how special our Lowcountry setting is, here at Berkeley Hall Club.

R E C O G N I T I O N This year we honor two BHCF titans – Bill Reddersen and Jim McCarl. As former charitable foundation chairs, they have served as forceful advocates for our mission, to help those most vulnerable in the greater Bluffton community. Bill Reddersen took on the reins as BHCF Chairman in 2013. The spark for the BHCF was ignited with the first Charity Cup event held in 2008, as founders Phil and Diane Anselmo desired to reach beyond the gates and support the greater community. When the Anselmos left BHC, it was Bill, long-time member of the foundation board and grants committee, who took over as Chair, serving for six years. Bill’s charming smile and easy manner paired with strong resolve, helped steer the

foundation to exceptional levels. His astute leadership and business acumen led us where we are today, and we are immensely grateful. For those that know Jim McCarl well, it is his desire to serve the community that sets him apart, along with executive know-how, and a great golf game! Jim followed Bill as the next foundation Chair, having served as the Board of Trustees liaison to the BHCF Board of Trustees and remained Chair until his term was complete in December, 2019. Jim’s perceptive and judicious stewardship, coupled with a larger-than-life good nature, further brought the charitable foundation’s mission to life, garnering increasing levels of community support.

“Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah Sept 6 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm Kristin Hannah's The Four Winds is a stirring tale of love and hardship in Dust Bowl-era America. As the Dust Bowl ravages Texas, one woman must make a choice: Leave the farm that has been her family’s livelihood or stay and risk succumbing to cyclones of dirt. Kristin Hannah’s absorbing novel begins a few years before, when it seemed Elsa Wolcott might finally have a peaceful, fulfilling life ahead. After a rough childhood, she met Rafe Martinelli, the soulful, handsome son of Italian immigrants. Unlike any other person in her life, he made her feel valued. She moved in with his family, and they raised two children while they worked the earth. Elsa is resilient, her tireless efforts to keep her family well bring her to pack them up and head west. On the journey she contends with the hardships of picking cotton for pitiful wages, and the weaker wills of men around her, who abandon family or run ruthless corporate farms that exploit their employees. “The Marsh King’s Daughter” by Karen Dionne Oct 4 | Ladies Locker Room | 3pm Praised by Karin Slaughter and Megan Abbott, The Marsh King’s Daughter is the mesmerizing tale of a woman who must risk everything to hunt down the dangerous man who shaped her past and threatens to steal her future: her father. Helena Pelletier has a loving husband, two beautiful daughters, and a business that fills her days. But she also has a secret: she is the product of an abduction. Her mother was kidnapped as a teenager by her father and kept in a remote cabin in the marshlands of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Helena, born two years after the abduction, loved her home in nature, and despite her father’s sometimes brutal behavior, she loved him, too…until she learned precisely how savage he could be. • 4 (1 1/4-lb.) lobsters • 2/3 c. olive oil • Kosher salt • 1 c. brandy • 2 med. onions, chopped • 2 med. carrots, peeled, chopped • 2 med. fennel bulbs, chopped • 8 garlic cloves, crushed • 1/4 c. finely chopped drained oil-packed Calabrian chiles

• 1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes • 1/4 c. tomato paste • 2 c. dry white wine • 4 (28-oz.) cans whole peeled tomatoes, drained, puréed • 2 lb. spaghetti • 5 tbsp. unsalted butter, cut into pieces • 1/3 c. chopped parsley • 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice • Lemon wedges

1. Place 1 lobster on cutting board, belly down, head facing you (freeze 8–10 min first to render mostly immobile). Insert chef ’s knife where tail meets head, and swiftly bisect head lengthwise in one fell swoop (leave tail intact). Use back of cleaver or lobster cracker, crack each claw on all sides. Twist off tails, cut in half through shells lengthwise. Remove tomalley or eggs. Twist off knuckles and claws, separate knuckles from claws with cleaver. 2. Heat 1/3 cup oil in wide Dutch oven or large heavy pot to hold pasta over medium-high. Season lobsters with salt, in sear lobster pieces, turn add more oil if pot looks dry, until shells are bright red, 4 min for knuckles, claws, tails; 6 min for heads. Transfer lobsters to rimmed baking sheet; cool slightly. Remove pot from heat and add brandy. Return to heat and cook, scraping up browned bits, until smell of alcohol is almost gone, about 2 min. Transfer brandy mixture to small bowl. Pick lobster meat from knuckles and claws, discard shells. Place in airtight container with tails; cover, chill. Set heads aside. Wipe out pot and reserve. 3. Work in batches, pulse onions, carrots, fennel separately in food processor until finely chopped; transfer to large bowl. Heat remaining 1/3 cup oil in reserved pot over med-high. Cook vegetables, 8–10 min. Add garlic, chiles, and 1 tsp. red pepper flakes and cook, smashing garlic with wooden spoon, stir until fragrant, for 2 min. Stir in tomato paste, season with salt, stir about 3 min. Add wine and reserved lobster heads; bring to simmer and cook, stir until reduced by one-third, about 2 min. Add tomato purée to pot, bring to simmer. Reduce heat to medium, stir until sauce is slightly thickened, 10-15 min. Discard heads. 4. Meanwhile, cook pasta in a large pot of boiling salted water, stir occasionally, until very al dente. Drain, reserving 3 cups pasta cooking liquid. 5. Add butter, chilled lobster meat, tails, pasta, reserved brandy mixture, and 2 cups pasta cooking liquid to sauce. Cook, toss to combine, add more cooking liquid as needed, until sauce coats pasta. This will take effort, toss using a long sturdy spoon in each hand, and get to bottom of pot. Add parsley and lemon juice, then transfer pasta to a platter, arranging lobster tails on top. 6. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes, serve with lemon wedges. Do Ahead: Lobsters can be prepared 6 hours ahead. Cover and chill.

BHC Members Look Back on USGA Event Play Excitement is building as we draw closer to hosting the prestigious U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship, September 23-30 at Berkeley Hall. Some of our BHC members know well this level of play and the thrill of participating in a USGA event: Carol Dulude, Maggie Leef and Karen Ferree. Here we share some of their experiences, views on women’s golf and what it means to bring this level of play to Berkeley Hall Club. Q. Tell us about the first USGA event you qualified for, and what it meant for you.

Q. As the USGA Championship comes to Berkeley Hall, what are you most excited about?

I played in my first USGA qualifier at Newport Country Club in RI. I didn’t think I was likely to qualify, so I was relaxed and enjoying the experience. When the rounds were completed, I could hardly believe I tied two other players for the last qualifying spot, then won the three-way playoff. It is not an exaggeration to say I was flying high.

To see our club filled with impressive women golfers, and how they approach holes here I find challenging. I am proud of our courses, facilities and our professional staff and how much care they take to ensure everybody feels entitled to the best possible golf experience. I know the players will leave with a love of Berkeley Hall.

Driving up to the course and seeing the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur signs, I was in awe to be among the 132 women that qualified. Seeing my name on the USGA scoreboard was one of the highlights of my life. Q. Most memorable moment at a USGA event you’ve played? My second USGA event, the Sr. Women’s Amateur at Wellesley Country Club in MA offered a great spectator view. On the last day of stroke play competition my approach shot landed just left of the green in the rough, on a side hill lie. I hit my chip shot to six inches and the crowd started clapping. It was so much fun.

Q. What do you envision the legacy of this event being for women’s golf in the Lowcountry? As players move from games with friends to organized club events to tournaments at a county and state level, then national championships, every step has its joys and rewards but playing in a USGA national event is unmatched in my experience. Q. Top thoughts on status of women’s golf today? I’m excited there are more opportunities for younger girls to play, casually and competitively. The LPGA has become more global and competitive. Women’s golf has never been better positioned than it is today.

Q. Tell us about the first USGA event you qualified for and what it meant for you. My first USGA event was the 1999 State Team Championship at Golden Horseshoe in VA. It quite literally changed my life! Wisconsin was paired with Pennsylvania and Alabama. I stood on the first tee chatting casually with Carol Semple Thompson and Virginia Derby Grimes, two world-renowned career amateurs. The event was my introduction to the camaraderie and fun of competing in USGA Championships. I came away from that event with a desire to practice and develop my game to provide opportunities to play in more championships. Since that first event I’ve played in over 25 USGA Championships. Q. Most memorable moment at a USGA event you’ve played? Being introduced on the first tee of the Inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Chicago Golf Club by Nancy Lopez. Q. As the USGA Championship comes to Berkeley Hall, what are you most excited about?

Q. Tell us about the first USGA event that you qualified for, and what it meant for you. I started playing in USGA events as a junior golfer and at the time there were no qualifiers, but one was chosen according to the lowest handicaps. The first qualifier I can recall was the USGA Women’s Open at Salem Country Club in Peabody, MA. which was won by Hollis Stacy. The first USGA Mid-Am I qualified for was conducted at the Essex Country Club in Massachusetts, where Donald Ross had lived and designed the course. The WSCGA selected their USGA State Team contestants through a point system and I was a member of the first seven of South Carolina’s teams. Q. Most memorable moment at a USGA event you’ve played? I was most proud of qualifying for the 2003 USGA Mid-Am conducted at Long Cove Club at the age of 53, made match play and was so proud to have our son, Randy, caddy for me. I did lose the match 1 down to Carol Semple Thompson whose amateur record 14

Watching the women play the North Course set up for a USGA Championship. I believe watching elite women players play our golf course will help members with their golf games and course management. Members will be amazed! Q. What do you envision the legacy of this event for women’s golf in the Lowcountry and at Berkeley Hall? We purchased our Lifestyle Cottage as a result of playing a practice round for the 2005 USGA State Team Championship. We have the opportunity to showcase not just our club, but all the charms of life in the Lowcountry, particularly at Berkeley Hall. Q. Top thoughts on status of women’s golf today? Both amateur and professional women’s golf are growing and expanding at an incredible rate. I am thankful to see the USGA, LPGA, First Tee and other women’s golf organizations taking the lead in sharing the stories of the positive impact of golf in communities and in personal lives of players at all levels. Golf provides so many opportunities for personal development and fun. It’s great to see a wider variety of women and girls engaging in golf.

is second to none. Carol is also a class act, one who demonstrates unmatched sportsmanship. My best finish in a USGA Senior Women’s Amateur was 2001 at Allegheny Country Club. I actually played my match as the Twin Towers were being attacked. A day none of us will ever forget. I lost my semifinal match, and that tournament was won by Carol Semple Thompson. Q. Describe the impact of USGA Championship play: USGA events are the best. It was always an honor to qualify for a national championship and prepare for the challenging 36-hole qualifier for match play. Q. As the USGA Championship comes to Berkeley Hall, what are you most excited about? Congratulations to the Berkeley Hall membership for contesting the USGA State Team Championship and this year as host to the 2021 Women’s Mid-Am Championship. It is an honor we can all be proud of, for our Club and for women’s golf. Ferree was inducted in the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame in 2014.

KIERAN STAUNTON | DIRECTOR OF GOLF hat a great summer of golf we had this year, with some great play in the Major Championships and an exciting finish to Olympics golf, which leads us into the Solheim Cup in Ohio and the Ryder Cup up in Wisconsin this September. Here at Berkeley Hall, we’ve had a busy season with annual maintenance on both courses and lots of play from our growing membership. It has been excellent to see the courses and the practice facilities in such high demand, and we look

forward to having both courses in action now through next summer. The much-anticipated leadup to this year’s U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur is nearly here and we look forward to hosting many of the country’s top players as they compete for the Championship on the North Course this September. Our Fall tournament season begins just as the Mid-Am finishes. We have a full schedule of ‘Major’ events as well as the seasonal Men’s, Ladies, and Mixed events. It has been great to see all so well supported this

year, and the Fall events look to be no different. We are looking forward to full fields for all the events, and hope that you too are looking forward to some friendly competition out on the course!

all in the Lowcountry is spectacular, particularly so on the courses. We have an exciting golf season ahead, and our focus turns to conditioning, staff training, and detail work around both courses including mulch areas, pine straw beds and natural areas, restoring them to premier shape for fall play. Member tournaments have always been one of my favorite aspects of Club agronomy, and our team is geared up as prepare for our busy tournament season. Now that aerification season is over, we turn our focus to getting ready for the fall golf season. With all the work completed during summer course closures, the agronomy team has successfully positioned a great foundation to improve the soil and help improve fall and winter conditions. ON THE NORTH: At the same time, we are hard at work preparing the North Course for the USGA Women’s MidAmateur at the end of September. With the USGA championship, we have a great opportunity to showcase Berkeley Hall to some of the best women amateurs in the nation. 20

efforts are dedicated to building a great environment and implementing new ways to execute certain agronomy tasks. With a team comprised of experienced Berkeley Hall employees and recently added new staff members, it’s very rewarding to see everyone come together as we continue to build a strong team and refine our agronomy needs for the Club.

LOOKING FORWARD: Berkeley Hall’s Strategic Plan provides a strong course to follow as we work in tandem with the Golf and Greens Committee on improvements needed to advance the courses over the next few years. We are concentrating on projects which improve playability, aesthetics, and reduction of labor inputs. We begin with overseeding of the North Course this fall. Another big area of emphasis over the next few months is staff training, development, and retention. With any transition there is turnover, and our

I greatly appreciate the membership’s support, as we transition from summer aerification to our fall and winter seasons ahead. Both course aerifications went extremely well and it is important we continue these processes for years to come, to build more consistent golf courses 12 months out of the year.
