Best Laid Plans At the beginning of each year, we all have a tendency to plan and wonder what might happen in the year ahead. We set positive intentions in the form of New Year’s resolutions. We may plan to take steps toward big career or life goals. At the beginning of the year, it all seems straightforward. But at the end of the year, I usually look back and realize that so much was unexpected. Despite the best laid plans, I often can’t predict how my year will look. But I truly believe that what matters is not what happens – it’s how you handle it. Whether our plans succeed or change course completely, meeting each change with a positive attitude is key to a successful year. In 2014, some of my favorite moments were seeing Oprah speak at her “The Life You Want Weekend” tour in Atlanta, unexpectedly having the opportunity to reacquire Atlanta Home Improvement magazine, which I launched in 2001, and celebrating a fifth anniversary with our Best Self Atlanta team. I look forward to the twists and turns that 2015 will bring, and I wish you all the best with your plans for the new year – however they may turn out.

In early 2014, I just didn’t like the way I looked or felt. I have been an avid jogger and exerciser for years but was getting tired quickly and having lots of pain. I ran into an old friend who had just lost 12 pounds by eating gluten- and sugar-free. I thought, “Why not give this a try?”

I resolved to do three things in 2014: lose weight, launch an additional business venture and continue to follow my passion for positively changing lives.

When I was 32, I decided to make healthy living a lifestyle because of my weight gain and my family history of high blood pressure and diabetes.

On New Year’s Eve I had a huge “last supper” and planned on taking action the following day. Dozens of “last suppers” later, I finally got started in June. I lost 78 pounds in a few short months.

Within three months, I lost 25 pounds and was working out four times a week. Over the next six months, I achieved the goal of keeping sweets (my former weakness) to a minimum of once a month. Eight years later, fitness and healthy eating are simply a part of my life.

I was diagnosed with a rare chromosome disorder when six weeks pregnant with my first child. This led me to question: What could I do to give her the best chance? This was five years ago and has led me on an eye-opening journey to eliminating toxic chemicals from my life.

Many years ago, I became addicted to prescription opiates. I worked very hard to free myself from that misery and went on to enjoy over 15 years completely free of all drugs. Then, due to some significant spinal damage and surgery, I had to use painkillers continually for quite some time. Having opiates back in my system again was terrifying. As soon as I got through the surgery, I knew I had to get off the drugs immediately or risk a total relapse.

When did you achieve your resolution? After a few weeks, some amazing things began to happen: my trainer could not believe the difference in weight-bearing exercise I could do. My endurance skyrocketed.

What helped you achieve your goal?

I tried it all – low-fat, low-carb and Paleo approaches without success.

I started drinking ionized alkaline water. I had been on every diet from Weight Watchers to Atkins, but I would always plateau. With the ionized water, I maintained rapid and steady weekly weight loss.

I am able to enjoy life to the fullest. My doctor has supported me coming off blood pressure pills for the first time in 20 years. I don’t get heartburn and indigestion as I did before, and I sleep much better too.

I became so passionate about the ionized alkaline water that I launched my own business and sell the machines that produce the ionized water in homes. I now educate others about ionized water and their own journey back to health.

I realized that I had to be 150 percent dedicated to my fitness and nutrition program and use the same discipline that I used in my career and personal life. After conquering this goal, what’s your resolution for 2015? My goal is to touch as many women’s lives as possible as a fitness coach and trainer at my studio. I love seeing the joy women have when they get fit and healthier!

What positive changes have resulted from your resolution? I have created a healthy home free of toxins (or what I can control) for my children and family. We have seen the health benefits of avoiding toxic chemicals and opting for healthy and organic foods. And ultimately it led to the creation of Healthy Green Schools, my organization that removes toxic chemicals from schools and sets up healthy food guidelines. After conquering this goal, what’s your resolution for 2015? I hope that 2015 leads to exponential growth in the program, leading to positive, sustainable changes in all Atlanta schools.

When did you achieve your resolution? I consulted a good friend and colleague, Dr. Jacquie Damgaard from ExecuCare. She introduced me to a new intravenous protocol called NTR Brain Restoration. I experienced minimal withdrawal symptoms, and in 10 days, I was free of all cravings for the opiates, my back felt better and my energy was back! After conquering this goal, what’s your resolution for 2015? To learn more about myself and to reclaim my optimum life.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine first eight ingredients; toss well. Combine Alfredo sauce with chicken mixture. Place pie squares in a muffin pan. Add chicken mixture and cheese. I recently heard some friends talking about the dangers of running on hard surfaces. Is this really a risk? What should I do to protect myself? Running on hard surfaces like asphalt does place a slightly higher level of stress on your bones and joints compared to running on grass or unpaved trails. However, running is inherently stressful on these parts of the body, regardless of the surface you’re on. The key to protecting yourself against stress injuries is to give your body a break from running. Biking, swimming and hiking are great alternatives to help mix up your routine.

Can I get influenza from the flu shot? The injection version of the flu shot is not a live viral vaccine, so patients cannot get the flu from this method. Common side effects include local reactions at the site of injection, mild fever and minor achiness. What is most confusing for my patients is that the flu shot does not protect from everything they consider the flu – it will not prevent patients from getting other common winter colds.

I recently started an exercise program, and now my heels are painful when I first wake up in the morning. What could this be? Low arches, high arches, unsupportive shoes and activities such as running or aerobic exercise can all cause heel pain. The most likely diagnosis is plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of a ligament that starts from the heel and attaches in the ball of the foot. Treatment includes calf stretching, more supportive shoes, cool water soaks and anti-inflammatory medications. Cortisone injections, night splints and custom arch supports can also be used to relieve heel pain. Very rarely does heel pain require any surgical intervention.

T

he word “homeless” may conjure images of people panhandling on the street, but in reality, the problem of homelessness can look very different. Those who are technically homeless may actually be living in a shelter or a transitional program. They may only be homeless for a short period of time. Surprisingly often, people experiencing homelessness are also employed but simply not earning enough to cover their basic expenses. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, there are approximately 600,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States. In Atlanta alone, that number is more than 10,000, with more than 40 percent being women and children. But several Atlanta organizations and charities are coming up with creative solutions, helping these individuals and families get back on their feet, and challenging people’s perceptions along the way.

How Homelessness Happens As with any difficult situation, people have a tendency to assume, “That could never happen to me.” But take a closer look at the common causes of homelessness: domestic violence, illness, substance abuse, traumatic backgrounds and even jobs that simply don’t pay a living wage. These make it clear that sometimes the circumstances just overwhelm an individual or family and make rent or mortgage payments impossible, whether – Deborah Walker-Little, temporarily or for longer periods.

Many people who can’t afford housing are, in fact, working. As of 2014, Georgia remains one of only four states with minimum wage rates under the federal rate of $7.25 an hour. Georgia’s minimum wage is $5.15 an hour, and according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 9.2 percent of Georgians are living in poverty. “You’d be surprised by who is homeless,” WalkerLittle says. “It could be the woman sitting in the cubicle next to you at work. It’s people who work at jobs that Interfaith Outreach Home you would not think would be spending their nights in cars. It impacts a whole lot of folks – people who look normal in every other aspect.”

Deborah Walker-Little, the executive director of Interfaith Outreach Home (IOH), says, “Domestic violence is the greatest cause of homelessness for women and children,” often because violent situations require slipping out in the night without many belongings. Mandy Putnam, director of communications and corporate relations at Back on My Feet Atlanta, adds, “We see a lot of people with military backgrounds and PTSD, and a lot of substance abuse. Many have relationship issues or illnesses like cancer. We had one man who left his job to take care of his sick wife, but the medical expenses got to be too much.”

Hard as it may be to believe, a recent report from the Committee for Better Banks stated that one-third of all bank tellers are on public assistance. An average teller at Wells Fargo makes less than $11 an hour, or about $22,600 a year. While that’s above the federally mandated minimum wage, it’s also low enough to qualify a family of four for food stamps.

A New Approach

A problem like homelessness, which has such varied causes and affects so many people, requires creative solutions. Atlanta groups are taking notice and tackling homelessness through unconventional tactics. Back on My Feet connects with and supports the homeless community through running. “Our mission is to use running to create self-sufficiency in the lives of those experiencing homelessness,” Putnam explains. The organization partners with local shelters and refuges such as City of Refuge, Gateway Center, Salvation Army and Trinity House in order to connect with homeless Atlantans. Once they have found interested participants, Putnam says, the running begins. For each participant, running helps foster independence, accountability, health and pride in their success. “It’s a first step to getting them housed, employed or in some educational training.” Plus, it’s an elegant metaphor for life: you have to keep moving forward, one step at a time, to meet your goals and cross the finish line. The Task Force for the Homeless at Peachtree-Pine takes a different approach; they offer their residents new opportunities through an organic rooftop garden. In partnership with Truly Living Well, an urban farming center and training facility, the Task Force’s resident volunteers grow a variety of crops in 90 raised beds. This garden gives their residents a chance to enjoy green space, to take ownership of choosing and preparing their food, and to reap the health benefits of fresh, organic produce. In addition to those benefits, a specially funded program prepares these resident volunteers for entrepreneurial farming and marketing. After six months, that same program certifies them to train other urban farmers at Our Community at Peachtree-Pine, passing on their newfound knowledge and skills and empowering others just as they themselves were empowered. Mercy Care has gotten creative with their approach as well. “Recently we created a flash mob of Mercy Care employees in Downtown Atlanta to bring attention to the need for Medicaid expansion,” says Kenya Arnold, a case manager for Mercy Care. “Mercy Care also has mobile medical coaches that go into the hardest hit areas, providing free care and other valuable services. [We] also reach those in need through night street medicine outreach events and early morning outreach at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport with collaborative partners.”

Snapshots of Success Nothing proves the value of these organizations’ work more than getting to know Atlantans who have benefited from their support. Meet these three who received the support they needed and are building the lives they want. As a single mother working part-time at an Atlanta hotel, Thomasine Mungo was not getting enough hours to generate the income needed to pay her rent. Eventually, eviction led to homelessness for Mungo and her three children in the winter of 2011. When a local homeless provider referred her to the Atlanta Children’s Shelter (ACS), she received free early childcare for her two-year-old son and joined the ACS Hire Up program, which ultimately led to a position as bestselfatlanta.com

Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless serves an average of 1,000 people daily, offering reprieve from the elements as well as medical care referrals, workshops, job training and more.

Mercy Care Atlanta

Through their network of clinics and outreach programs, Mercy Care Atlanta provides free and sliding scale primary medical care, dental and vision to those in need. James Geary spent years jumping from one job to another until the economic decline hit Atlanta. “By the time I did find employment, I’d lost my room, possessions and happy-go-lucky attitude,” he says. “It was a serious wake-up call.” The second time he became homeless was due to drinking and bereavement. “I just couldn’t pull myself together,” he says. “It was during that time I was hit by a car.” Following the accident, Geary was taken to Grady Hospital with a number of fractures and broken bones that would require surgery. While recuperating at Grady, a nurse from Mercy Care encouraged him to take advantage of their Recuperative Care Program at the Gateway Center, which exists for sick or injured patients who are medically well enough to be discharged from the hospital but who don’t have a home in which to recover. After a few months in recuperative care, Geary was transferred to the Veteran’s Transitional Housing Program (VTHP), where he is still recuperating and building up his physical endurance. “I’m not going to hold my breath waiting on a disability check,” he says. “If I can work, then I will work.” After her divorce, Corliz Sidwell chose to avoid more fighting by giving her ex everything and starting over, which led her into homelessness. Thankfully a friend at her church told her about IOH. “The life skills program they offered taught me how to save and manage money,” she says. “IOH is a place that fills you with hope. It inspired me to continue on and give back.” After graduating the program, Sidwell graduated magna cum laude with degrees in both medical office administration and medical assisting from Gwinnett College. Today she lives in Sandy Springs and works as a clinical research assistant at Infectious Disease Specialists of Atlanta. As these stories show, the most important fact to recognize is that people experiencing homelessness are just that – people. They deserve support and encouragement through difficult times, which you can help provide. And anyone who gets involved in support efforts quickly recognizes, Arnold says, “There is no great dividing line between themselves and those experiencing homelessness.”

Lost-N-Found Youth

Homeless youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer have a safe space with this organization, which provides housing, food, clothing, health care, referrals to GED training and other education, job skills training and more. How you can help: Volunteers can help run dinners, shop for necessities for the housing facilities, organize movie nights, sort through donated items and more. Volunteer orientations are held the second Thursday of every month.

Atlanta Children’s Shelter

“Our program serves families experiencing episodic homelessness, which is usually temporary and caused by a crisis such as job loss or domestic violence,” explains Sandra Holiday, executive director of Atlanta Children s Shelter In addition to helping these families secure permanent housing, the organization provides supportive services to help them recover emotionally, mentally and physically. How you can help: Volunteers can assist teachers in classroom activities such as arts and crafts or story time, help execute the shelter’s annual 5K run/walk, wrap gifts and sort donations. Interfaith Outreach Home

For a program fee of families of the IOH program are offered 420-square-foot, fully furnished apartments located in Doraville. Families start out by creating a budget and ultimately save between $5,000 and $10,000 during their stay at IOH How you can help: Supporters can make nancial donations which are tax deductible or in-kind donations such as pantry items or furniture. Volunteers are needed to help clean, paint and refurbish apartments, do yard work, provide child care during parents’ counseling sessions, and even help move families out of IOH and into their new lives

By March 2013 she moved her family into permanent housing, and by October 2013, she became one of only 100 peer specialists certified in the state of Georgia. Today Mungo has plans to earn a degree in social work. “I have put into practice much of what has been suggested to me by the staff at ACS,” she says. “The encouragement and advice has proven to be invaluable to me in my recovery. Knowing that someone truly is there for me has made a tangible difference in my life.”

ADHD isn’t something that can be diagnosed with a blood test or a brain scan, nor is it certain what role lifestyle factors play in ADHD symptoms. But local experts Dr. Regina Robbins and Dr. Jacqueline Kiefel agree that some parts of ADHD diagnosis and treatment come standard.

Diet – Dr. Kiefel, a pediatric neuropsychologist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, says some parents report a worsening of their child’s symptoms whenever they consume more sugar. To be safe, she says parents should “monitor sugar intake in their children and modify diet and daily habits accordingly,” opting for more fresh vegetables, healthy dips and nuts to avoid exacerbating symptoms.

Dr. Robbins, who practices at WellStar Medical Group’s Kenmar Pediatrics, breaks down the details of diagnosis.“The common symptoms are hyperactivity, inattention, and/or impulsivity,” she says. In order for a child to be diagnosed with ADHD, there must be documented instances of those symptoms in two or more settings (such as home and school) for at least six months. These symptoms must appear before age 12 and cause impairment of academic or social activities. If a diagnosis of ADHD is reached, controlling some basic lifestyle factors can be helpful.

Sleep – Ample sleep each night is key for every child. Citing research conducted by Dr. Dean Beebe with the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Dr. Kiefel says there exists “a large association between a childhood sleep problem and the development of an attention problem over time.” Plus, ADHD can make a child more prone to sleep problems and daytime fatigue, making it even more important to emphasize a good night’s sleep.

After seeing this need, O’Brien wanted to meet it. Since founding Embraced, she and the organization have helped almost 5,000 people – both in Atlanta and globally – attain the medical equipment they need for mobility. Recipients are “beyond grateful and relieved,” O’Brien says, when they finally become mobile. “It impacts them on so many levels. When mobility is compromised, it leaves someone feeling vulnerable. Combine that with the fact that they don’t have the funds to get equipment to help them, and you can imagine what they are faced with. Embraced solves a huge problem for them.”

But Embraced, a local nonprofit founded in 2008, knows that too often, people go without the equipment they need for mobility. Founder Lauren O’Brien says, “I saw a need when I was interning in both for profit and nonprofit heath clinics. On the for profit side, people were asking the doctor, ‘What do I do with these crutches since I am finished with them?’ On the nonprofit side, people needed this medical equipment and often went without it.”

Hazel Clark comes from a family of excellence: a track coach for a brother, a four-time Olympian for a sister, and a father well known for being the tough principal of an inner-city New Jersey school. Surrounded by such driven personalities, Clark knew from an early age she would have to find her own place, passion and self-confidence. And she certainly did. After a high school figure skating accident, she started running and never looked back. Her skill and dedication led her to an undefeated SEC collegiate career, six national titles and three Olympic competitions. At 20 years old, Clark even signed a multiyear global ad contract with Nike. Clark now serves as the program manager for DeKalb Medical’s Wellness Center, offering community programs in fitness, weight loss, nutrition and more. She also travels the world with the U.S. Department of State’s Track & Field Sports Envoy program, fostering other young athletes’ passion.

When did you first discover your passion for track and field?

I was intimidated by track and field – I didn’t want to have to follow in my sister’s footsteps. I tried tennis, figure skating, everything in the book. I didn’t start running until a very late age.

Tell us about your first track meet.

My dad took me to a track meet and told me to get out there and run and that I would win. I gave it my best, and I got last place. My dad said, “You have to work hard because you have the talent.” Next year, I was number one in the nation. That was my first lesson with being knocked down and having to fight through it and not give up.

How did it feel to compete in the Olympics?

It took a lot of hard work. I can’t put into words what it felt like to walk into that stadium, see the President of the United States waving at me and know that everyone at home was proud of me. And I was able to do it with my sister and sister-in-law and make history – all of that was by far the highlight of my career.

What obstacles did you face during your track and field career?

People told me that there was no chance that I’d be in an ad for Nike because I didn’t seem to fit the image, so it was a very big thing that I was in stores. Other black athletes would tell me that they were just so proud to see a woman of color on the wall in a store. Now, I think my biggest challenge was retiring at 35 years old and transitioning into the corporate world. It was overwhelming, but the community has embraced me. Receiving the Trailblazer Award in business this year means a lot to me – I knew I was an athlete, but to also say that I am successful businesswoman feels good.

What are your fitness routine and diet like these days?

I run in the morning before I start my day, and I have an awesome nutrition plan through Good Measure Meals that has been really effective for me.

What advice would you give your younger self?

“Listen, all you can do is your very best. Get out there and give your best all the time, and if you fail, at least you can hold your head high.”

What advice do you have for people at the beginning of their health and fitness journey? Remember that something is better than nothing. Stay away from comparing yourself to other people – just take the first step.
