Over 40 & Fabulous! The old saying,“to love others, you must first love yourself,” is definitely at the heart of being “fabulous.” If a person is truly happy with who they are, others tend to gravitate toward that positive energy. This month we kick off our annual Over 40 & Fabulous! contest and we are looking for those dynamic men and women who take care of themselves, physically, emotionally and mentally. They also believe that age is just a number! If you or someone you know is over 40 and exemplifies feeling good, looking good and doing good for others, send in a nomination for our annual Over 40 & Fabulous! contest. Nominations will be accepted starting now through midnight on March 1. Forty candidates will be chosen from all entries to participate in our Facebook contest. The top 10 winners (by number of votes received) will be featured in our June issue and one will be chosen by an independent panel of judges as the overall contest winner. The top 10 winners will receive prize packages valued at $500 and the overall winner will appear on the cover and win a $1,000 “Best Self” prize package. Go to www.bestselfconnect.com for contest details and to nominate your candidate today. All the best,

Sometimes finding a partner to work out with can help give you that extra motivational push. That’s just how our Fit Couples feel as they talk to us about how exercising together has made all the difference (p. 47). Finding that type of support at any age is truly an inspiration, and it can happen when you least expect it, if you’re open to it. In Finding Love Over 40 (p. 37), learn where the singles mingle. Although primarily thought of as a man’s disease, heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S. February 1 is National Wear Red Day. Do your part by wearing red and learning more about advances in heart health from Atlanta’s medical community (p. 29). Whether it’s finding a new flame or fitness routine, remember to always keep your ticker in tip top shape! Happy Reading!

Q
How do I slow the aging process and put off the need for surgery? Facial injectables are your friend. Botox or Dysport will erase lines and wrinkles in the forehead and help lift the brow, unfurrow the glabella (space between the eyebrows) and minimize crow’s feet. Fillers (such as Juvederm or Radiesse) will smooth marionette lines, and raise and plump cheeks and temples. Fat transfer to those areas and to the tear troughs (under eye area) will also give the patient a rested and fuller, younger look. Laser resurfacing of the skin will tighten the loose areas, diminish lines, remove sun damage, and refresh and renew the skin, giving it a healthier youthful glow.

My teenage daughter has psoriasis. She is embarrassed and has become very self-conscious. She has started exfoliating in hopes of removing the dry skin, but it seems to be getting worse. Is there a better solution?
a
With stress to the skin being a trigger for psoriasis, using an abrasive product can aggravate the condition and cause further challenges. As we enter cold, dry winter weather, lack of sunlight can also be a trigger. When at home, keep in mind that the skin is sensitive. Stay away from products with heavy perfume and fragrance. Step One: Try apple cider vinegar (which soothes skin inflammation) diluted with water as a compress. Step Two: Mix two teaspoons of olive oil into a glass of milk and pour into the bath water as a soak. Step Three: Eat your green vegetables, which act as an antiinflammatory. The best tip is to see your physician for suggestions on the ideal treatment for your individual needs.
Recently, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against PSA-based screenings for prostate cancer. As a board-certified radiation oncologist, what are your thoughts?
a
When the PSA test was introduced in 1987, it revolutionized prostate cancer. Prostate cancer shows no symptoms, so the test has been essential for early detection, which has led to higher cure rates. Today, the death rate of men with prostate cancer is approximately 32,000 annually. This number is substantially less than before PSA testing began. Consequently, our program will continue to advocate PSA screening for prostate cancer.

What’s the difference between facelift and “mini” facelift?
The facelift is designed to provide overall rejuvenation to those with moderate to dramatic signs of facial aging, whereas a “mini” or the Band Aid Facelift is designed to address mild to moderate aging symptoms in-office with gentle numbing. While a “mini” facelift can reduce fine lines, wrinkles and small amounts of excess skin, it’s best to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon before undergoing this type of procedure to ensure that your issues don’t warrant a more comprehensive approach.
I have been suffering from extreme pain in one of my heels, especially in the morning when I first start walking. What can I do? Heel pain, also called plantar fasciitis, is one of the most common reasons people see a podiatrist. When the ligament on the bottom of your foot becomes inflamed, your heel will hurt and walking can be difficult. Treatment options include taking anti-inflammatories, wearing shoes with rigid arch supports and wearing night splints. Stretching exercises also can help. In more severe cases, local steroid injections may be needed. The best advice is to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can evaluate your situation and determine the best course of treatment.

Lifestyle choices that help you say no to breast cancer
1. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Eat fruits and veggies high in antioxidants including oranges, asparagus, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and papaya for the most benefit. In addition to functioning as antioxidants, they also contain lots of fiber. Fiber binds to estrogen in the digestive tract so that levels in the blood are reduced. 2. Exercise regularly. the levels of estrogen produced by the body, thereby reducing the risk of breast cancer.
3. Reduce fat. Some research indicates that a low-fat diet helps prevent breast cancer. Avoid saturated fat found in meat, butter or ghee (a class of clarified butter), foods that contain fullcream milk and fatty acids in margarine. 4. Do not overcook meats. When meats are cooked or
baked, they produce carcinogenic compounds. The longer they are cooked, the more the compound is formed.

On February 1, you may see a lot of women wearing the color red. This isn’t an early celebration of Valentine’s Day; it’s a celebration of life. In 2002, The Heart Truth, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, was launched to raise awareness for women about heart disease. Since then, the red dress has been one of the symbols of heart health awareness, and National Wear Red Day was born. As the awareness continues to gain momentum, women’s heart health has gone from a virtually unspoken topic to one of the deadliest epidemics facing women today. Our hearts are tasked with many different things. We are told to have a heart, follow our heart and get to the heart of the matter in a hurry. It’s no secret that the heart is a vital organ, so why do so many of us neglect its More than health until it’s too late? According to the American Heart Association, heart disease remains the number one killer of women. Almost twoeach year from thirds of the women who die suddenly – of coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms, so knowing the signs and 5 times as many understanding your risks are the first steps as breast cancer —The National Coalition for toward taking a stand against heart disease.

Pay Attention To The Signs Although it’s more common to associate heart disease with men, that doesn’t mean women are safe from the devastating effects of a sudden heart attack. Much of the research on heart disease has been focused on men, since it was believed that they were at a higher risk. However, as the fatality numbers have increased, there is now more focus on educating women about this disease. Until recently, women’s biggest health scare was breast cancer. But more than 200,000 women die each year from heart attacks - five times as many as breast cancer, according to The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. Still, many women don’t know the signs and symptoms of heart disease. Since 1984, more women than men have died of heart disease, according to statistics from the American Heart Association. There are numerous factors for this, but some doctors believe that women are more likely to think a heart attack is just stress because the symptoms aren’t always the same in every patient. That one mistake can be the last one you make. But all of this can change by simply paying a little more attention to your heart. Missing the early signs of a heart attack is more common than some people think. Northside Hospital cardiologist Dr. Kimberly Champney says this may be due to simple misinterpretation. “They may have shortness of breath and attribute it to an acute illness like a cold or flu,” she says. “Many patients mistake chest discomfort or chest pain as heartburn or other gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms.” Symptoms for heart disease and heart attack can vary. It isn’t always going to be a sudden pain in the chest. Gender, age and other medical issues are just a few of the things that can cause a wide range of symptoms. “The most common symptom for all people is some kind of discomfort in the chest,” Dr. Champney says. “Many people do not describe true pain in their chest but will complain of heaviness, pressure or fullness in the chest. Others present with complaints of pain or discomfort in their arm, back or jaw. Many times the only symptom can be shortness of breath. This symptom is common in women, elderly patients and those with diabetes.”
Survivor Story from a
On July 7, 2012, 41-year-old Sarah Batts chose not to become a statistic. She sought help from a friend who recognized Batts was at risk for a cardiac event. Together, they went to the emergency room. “I was second guessing myself the whole way to the ER,” Batts said. “My only symptom was severe jaw pain.” Not long after she was taken to the cardiac observation unit, Batts had a heart attack. Her recovery is ongoing and she participates in cardiac rehabilitation at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. Her experience has left her an advocate for heart health. She urges women to pay attention to their bodies and arm themselves with as much knowledge as possible.
How has your life changed since having a heart attack? When you have a heart attack and survive, there’s so many different aspects of recovery you don’t ordinarily think of. It’s not just a physical recovery but an emotional and psychosocial recovery. Luckily, I have doctors and caregivers with me through every aspect of my recovery, helping me to adjust to my new lifestyle. I focus more on ways to reduce stress, eat properly and watch my numbers to keep my risk of having another heart attack as low as possible.
What are you doing differently today to stay healthy? I was already pretty active prior to my heart attack and was actually training for a 5K when it happened. Today, I continue to exercise as part of my Atlanta’s cardiac rehabilitation program. My diet has changed a lot as well. I work with a nutritionist who keeps me on track and has taught me how important diet is to overall health.

It seems innocent enough to mistake something serious with something common and simple, but if there’s ever concern about what you’re feeling, the best advice is always the same: get help. If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms continuously, it’s best to go to the hospital and get checked out.

It is so important to know your family’s history of heart disease and to be aware of your numbers. Six months prior to my heart attack, I had all my blood work done and everything was normal. My family’s history of heart disease played a very significant role in my own health scare and I knew that just because I wasn’t having chest pain, that didn’t mean I wasn’t experiencing a heart attack. Knowing the signs and symptoms is key – I recommend every woman take these signs seriously and don’t brush them off or attribute them to other things.

Know Your Risk It’s a well known fact that the first step in getting better from anything is admitting there’s a problem in the first place. Most doctors agree that it isn’t enough to know the signs and symptoms of a heart attack; it’s also important to understand your personal risk for developing it. According to Dr. Gina Prince Lundberg, Medical Director of St. Joseph’s Hospital Heart Center for Women, the greatest risk for heart disease in women is an easily avoidable condition we’re all familiar with. “The risk factor for heart disease in women is diabetes,” she says. “Hypertension and high cholesterol get lots of attention because these numbers are easy to follow and easily treated. But several important and little known risk factors are chronic kidney disease and rheumatologic disorders such as Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.” But diabetes isn’t the only high risk factor in developing heart disease for women. According to womenshealth.org, depression and lack of sleep are other risk factors women don’t consider. This could be because those negative circumstances lead to negative coping strategies, like not eating healthy or exercising. There are plenty of risk factors to familiarize “One very large study has yourself with if you want to stay heart healthy. shown that about

Most doctors suggest that women should start getting screened for heart disease before age 50 if heart disease runs in the family. Dr. Sara Mobasseri of Piedmont Heart Institute says that knowing your history (family and medical) and your numbers (fasting cholesterol, fasting blood sugars, blood pressure and body mass index) are key to staying proactive about the health of your heart.

Reduce Your Risk If you are at high risk for developing heart disease, there is a lot you can do to keep your ticker ticking for years to come. Getting your daily exercise isn’t just for having a svelte figure for weddings and beach vacations. The difference exercise can make in your health is unanimously agreed on by all medical professionals. “One very large study has shown that about 80 percent of heart disease can be prevented by maintaining a proper weight, diet, regular exercise and no tobacco use,” Dr. Champney says. According to The Women’s Heart Foundation, women are twice as likely to die after a heart attack than men. Women also have heart disease about 10 years later than men. Dr. Lundberg says this isn’t a medical anomaly. “The problem is that women think they are less at risk and do not follow their risk factors aggressively,” Dr. Lundberg says. “Also, they do not seek medical attention when they start to have symptoms or signs of heart disease.”

DISCUSS SMOKING, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, DIET Each regular healthcare visit The epidemic of heart disease in women could also be attributed to the fact that most women see their role as the caretaker of the lives around them and not necessarily their own. They are so busy taking care of others in their family that they often let their own health become a sidebar in their life. Dr. Mobasseri explains that the lower survival rate of women with heart issues is mainly due to one thing. “Because (women) are older when they have a heart attack, they have more associated medical problems including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc., and as a result, their outcomes or prognosis after a heart attack may be less favorable.” In the end, it’s all up to you. Familiarize yourself with your family history, get regular health screenings, pay attention to the subtle things your heart is telling you, and on February 1 wear your support by getting out that little red dress.

TMJ-Jaw Pain, Popping & Clicking? Does your jaw “lock up”, click or cause you pain when opened or closed or when you chew, do you have headaches that can’t seem to be diagnosed? The problem could be the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ is formed by two bones, the skull’s temporal bone and the mandible, or jawbone. These two bones, two on each side, form the hinge-like joint called TMJ. It is the physical connection where the jaw meets the skull. The joint can become slightly out of place and cause multiple problems. Besides those mentioned above, other common symptoms can be pain when chewing, shoulder and neck stiffness, earaches, dizziness and unexplained headaches.

PAIN FREE What We Help With: • Arthritic Joint Pain • Knee Pain • Degenerated Discs • Hip & S/I Joint Pain • Numbness & Radiating Pain • TMJ, Bursitis & Tendonitis
I fell 10 years ago and hurt my low back, my hip and my pelvis...I could not walk, drive, weight bare, sit, or barely stand. After just a few treatments, I noticed my body stabilizing... I could sleep better, walk better and continue to work...Total Health Care is the only place I will go ever again.” —Julie W.
What We Offer: • Regenerative & Integrated Medicine for Chronic Pain • Medical Doctors, Physiotherapists & Chiropractic Physicians On Staff • Regenerative Non-Steroidal Bio-Medicines (injections) • Anti-Arthritic Joint Injections Supartz® (for knees) www.supartz.com • Advanced Joint Fluid Replacement • Advanced Nerve Testing (Numbness & Tingling) • Lower Back & Neck Regenerative Disc Therapy
Often this is because TMJ dysfunction can place neurological strain on your body. Typically in TMJ syndrome the lower jaw (mandible) is extended forward. A head forward posture exaggerates the problem. This forward mandible aggravates the cervical ligament laxity, which increases the neck pain. Again an endless cycle of pain and disability is created in the neck, head, and face region. Eventually the mandible moves forward to the extent that it will stretch the lateral TMJ ligament and produce pain. Once the lateral TMJ ligament becomes lax the joint will click. It is important to note that clicking in any joint is an indication of ligament laxity of that joint. Joint clicking is never a normal or good sign. Joint clicking, whether it is in the TMJ, knee, neck, or lower back is almost always abnormal. The body’s compensatory mechanism for such a situation is to tighten muscles and to grow more bone. The end result will be degeneration, arthritis, and stiffness in that joint. A combination of Prolotherapy injections to strengthen both the cervical vertebrae and the temporomandibular (TMJ) joint combined with manipulations of the affected areas to realign the joints will often solve this problem. Please call Total Healthcare Physical Medicine for a complimentary in-office consultation today (Norcross 770-416-9995 or Sandy Springs 678-999-8531).

Finding over
W
and making it last By Taylor Arnold
hether you are recovering from a divorce or just haven’t yet found the right person, dating over 40 certainly has its challenges, but it is very possible to find love later in life.
Where to Start?
Meeting other singles can be intimidating, particularly if you’ve been out of the dating pool for several years. “Most often, folks that are looking for love over the age of 40 are doing so following a significant relationship ending,” says Dr. Tiffanie L. Davis Henry, author, sex therapist and owner of Intimate Details, LLC. “People in this age group aren’t dating just to date. They are in the market for more stable, serious relationships. The process of dating at this age is about comfort and security and not about making the same dumb mistakes you might have made in earlier years.” Before you jump into the dating pool, have a clear idea of what you want, and even more important, a strong sense of self. “Ninety-five percent of it is getting yourself ready, preparing yourself for love and having a strong, healthy belief system,” says Amber Salisbury, founder and CEO of Feel Love International. “If you can create a healthy relationship with yourself, you can invite someone else to the party.”
Manage the Past Try to examine relationships of the past and identify why they didn’t work. “If you’ve netted the same result in relationship after relationship, at some point you’ll want to look at what you’re doing to bring about that consistent outcome,” Dr. Henry says. “Examine what you’re putting out into the world and that may be what’s dictating your return.” www.bestselfconnect.com
"Know what your passion is. Then go surround yourself with people who have like passions." —Dr. Joyce Morley

If your past relationship(s) resulted in children, it’s important to have these relationships in place as well. “Tell (your children) that mom (or dad) is going to be dating,” says Dr. Joyce Morley, author, relationship coach and founder of Morley and Associates. “Don’t ask for their permission. Tell them what you’re going to do. Too many people let children dictate who they date. The same goes for the ex. You’re not asking their permission, you’re asking for respect.
"Most of us have more education driving a car than being in a successful relationship." —Dr. Louis McLeod
Remember that finding that ideal partner may not happen right away. “People will go on four bad dates and give up,” Salisbury says. “Some people take love and dating so seriously and get too caught up in it. They’re not laughing enough or being playful, and playfulness is so sexy and a real testament to how confident you are in your life.”
Reduce Common Mistakes
Get What You Want Knowing what you want in a partner may seem like the easy part, but according to Salisbury, it is more difficult than people might think. “That process is an extensive one because I have them write down everything that they want,” she says. “We brainstorm starting with the physical, then we dig deeper and look at the values that person has and the relationship you want to create. What are your must haves? What are things that are deal-breakers? You have to get to the core of who this person would be for you.” Oftentimes she’ll have clients create a “partner from hell” list to help identify their non-negotiables.
Let Go of Limiting Beliefs In the quest to find love, many people become paralyzed by what Salisbury calls “limiting beliefs.” “We tell ourselves that it’s too difficult, that time is running out, that we’re already set in our ways, or that there won’t be someone out there that will allow us to be ourselves without changing too much,” she says. “But there are seven billion people on the planet, and there is someone out there who will have values that compliment your values.”
“Most of us have more education driving a car than being in a successful relationship,” says Dr. Louis McLeod, a couples therapist at Relationship Counseling Atlanta. “People think it’s about finding the right person instead of being the right person. The truth is you have to have a sense of yourself as a healthy individual and be available for a relationship and not necessarily need one.” Another common mistake, according to Dr. Henry, is falling in love with someone’s potential rather than who they really are. “Many people have the ability to do, be, and have many things, but if they aren’t actively working toward those things, they’re just dreams and aspirations,” she says. “Don’t allow yourself to fall in love with what someone has the potential to be. Find someone who just is.”
Believe It's Possible One of the biggest obstacles Dr. Morley sees with her clients is a lack of value and self-worth. “It’s believing that you are worthy of having someone, but also believing someone is worthy of having you,” she says. “If you have that foundation, half the battle is already won.”

If you’ve been unsuccessful at finding love, Salisbury says it helps to look at your own belief system. “What are the stories that you’ve been telling yourselves since your last breakup?” she says. “Create a story that positions you to be successful in this arena. I’ve found that people who are in relationships that work believe that they deserve love and that that person is available.”
Dr. Morley’s
Relationship Maxims:
Make It Fun While online dating can certainly be a fun place to start, some relationship experts agree that there is more value in getting out and meeting people. “I suggest online dating, but sparingly,” Dr. Morley says. “You have to be cautious, and be prepared for disappointment because the person online might not be the person you get in real life.” Fortunately in a city like Atlanta, there is no shortage of fun things to do and organizations to join if your goal is to meet new people. “Figure out what your passion is, and go surround yourself with people who have the same passion,” Dr. Morley says. “Just do things you have an interest in and a passion for, and be open for like-minded people to come into your life.”
1. Typically, women look for marriage, and men look to date. What is your relationship agenda?

difficulty finding someone else. Is there a needy sign written on your forehead? 4. People want to go on a trip and take luggage, not baggage. You have to work out your situation with yourself before you invite someone else in your life. 5. Don’t be too picky – you’ll pick apart a person so much they have nothing left. 6. What are you showing non-verbally?
7. Don’t be afraid to go out by yourself. If you go by yourself, you might meet someone who is there by themselves too. 8. Always be aware, and accept when something is not right. Recognize that you cannot change people out there, but you can make changes within yourself.

with Dr. Venus Von Mock Ask the Hypnotherapy Specialist How can Hypnotherapy help me with relationships? Our relationship with others begins with the relationship with ourselves. How we feel about ourselves directly influences how we interact with others and how they respond to us. For instance: Are you defensive, guarded, distant, or needy? Are you repeating the same dysfunctional relationships? Have you become a victim of attacks from others or a “doormat”? Would you like to be able to open up to love, trust and share more? As a clinical hypnotherapist I help people discover the true sources of limitations, resolve internal conflicts, restore confidence and self-love. This is an empowering approach that naturally and authentically improves relationships, thus, attracting more amicable relationships. Remember, “Like energy attracts like energy”. What do my relationships have to do with spirituality? Sometimes soul matters enter into the equation of relationships such as, karma, soul agreements, soulmate and past life connections. These Spiritual matters of the heart are often uncovered in hypnotherapy sessions. Gaining insight about these connections can help resolve conflicts that cause toxicity in relationships.

Although conflicting schedules and a number of other factors may keep you from exercising with your significant other, a number of studies show that there are great benefits. • A 2001 study published in Quest (the journal of the National Association for Kinesiology and Physical Education in Higher Education) showed couples who take on a fitness program together had a higher exercise adherence rate. • A study in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness found that couples who exercise together are more likely to stick with an exercise program. • According to a study done by Indiana University, couples who exercise together are 34 percent more likely to show up at the gym for workouts than those who work out apart. • The American Council on Exercise (ACE) shows numerous studies link a direct correlation between exercise and an improved sex life.

This dynamic couple infuses their life with fun and fitness. “When I was asked how sports, fitness and recreation affected my relationship with my wife and family, it really made me think,” Bill says. “In retrospect, I hadn’t realized how important a factor it was. First of all, it was how we met. Cathy was a Shepherd Center employee and volunteer, and I was part of the Shepherd Center wheelchair rugby team.” Cathy would help the team during practice and she traveled all over the nation with them as they competed in tournaments.

Throughout their lives together they have engaged in many sports. Cathy played soccer and water skis. Bill competed in the Paralympics in track and field and he still plays wheelchair rugby and water skis competitively. He has won gold medals at the 1988 Seoul Paralympics and the 2012 U.S. National Waterski Championships. “We believe in the motto, ‘the family that plays together, stays together,’” Cathy says. “Bill and I also agreed that we are better, more tolerant spouses and parents when we get to exercise.” Their oldest daughter, Meredith, stays fit performing on aerial silks, while their younger daughter, Teagan, plays soccer, basketball and rock climbs. “As a family, we enjoy playing on the water and hiking up Stone Mountain. Sports provide us many avenues to support each other!” www.bestselfconnect.com

COUTURE
Katy and Shannon credit the gym for not only keeping them fit, but also bringing them together. “Working out is a passion for Shannon and me,” Katy says. “In fact, our romance began in a gym!” While their diverse schedules keep them busy (Katy is a teacher and Shannon is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame and commentator for CBS’s “The NFL Today”), they always find time for each other and to work out. Besides regularly attending Flywheel Sports spin classes together, they also lift weights. They make their workout sessions “dates” and look at these times as an important opportunity to stay healthy and spend quality time together. “Fitness has had a positive effect on our relationship because it is a common interest that we both feel very passionate about,” Katy says. “We work out together, and that allows us to spend much more quality time together.” Today, they continue to be a wonderful support system for each other when it comes to staying fit. They help each other plan their workouts and keep motivated.

Get Glowing Skin!
Rather than frequenting a standard gym, Ryan and Jen stay in shape by visiting rock climbing areas throughout the Southeast. “We encourage each other to use exercise as a way to escape the daily stresses of work, traffic, etc.,” Ryan explains. “Once you’re 60 feet off the ground, it all goes away and you are immersed in that moment.” Climbing has strengthened their relationship because they are forced to rely on each other for support and safety. “We are not just keeping each other company as we exercise, we are also trusting each other as a belayer,” Ryan says. “At the end of a good climbing session we often feel peace between ourselves as we have shared powerful moments with each other.” While climbing is the main activity they share, they also go snowboarding together. Apart, Jen enjoys Pilates while Ryan has wakeboarded for over a decade and plays disc golf weekly. These types of activities get them away from the mundane, day-to-day schedules and allow them to experience new places and people. “We push each other to try a little harder (each time we climb), but most importantly, have fun and enjoy each other’s company.”

Aaron and Cindy Pols As a personal trainer, diet and exercise have always been an important part of Aaron’s life. When he met his wife, Cindy, she was also on board to continue maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “We find that we provide both accountability and support for one another,” Cindy says. “The biggest key to sustained motivation is establishing a routine. Exercise must be built into your day, and it certainly helps keep you in line when your partner knows if you’ve slacked off!” Together they enjoy exercising at the gym before work, and continually strive to support each other. The result? They can enjoy a great meal with a nice glass of wine at the end of the day, guilt-free. “We have found that balancing work, exercise and diet has made us not only feel healthier and look fit, but we actually get along better,” Aaron says.
“Our advice to other couples is to hold one another accountable and you will both be much happier in how you look and feel.”
This has become the norm for them— work hard, exercise hard and play hard. Cindy explains they often change up their exercise routine to keep it interesting as well as to foster improvements in strength and endurance. “We’ve found that fitness activities themselves are a way for us to spend quality time together,” she says. “In general, a proper fitness routine helps smooth out our emotional well-being, allowing us to relate well to one another. It also impacts our individual confidence, which is beneficial to all aspects of keeping our relationship healthy.”
Troy and Gaby Yohn This active couple feel strongly about the importance of exercise. “We both knew that finding somebody that shares that same passion was an important attribute for a successful relationship,” Gaby says. When they first started working out together, they were doing the traditional workouts by lifting weights in the gym and doing a little running mixed in with the occasional game of tennis. “These workouts helped us have fun and spend time together and got us in great shape,” Gaby explains. However, after a while, they went through the same problems most people encounter: the workouts got stale and they found they exercised less and less.
“Play together, work out together and have some fun together in everything that you do.”
Halfway through their seven-year marriage, they started a property renovation company called Creative Lifestyles LLC, which added more stress and demands on their relationship. They knew they needed to bring the fun back to their workouts, so they decided to try Core Fusion and yoga classes at exhale atlanta. These classes, coupled with playing on tennis leagues, helped them refocus their energy to succeed in their business and relationship.

“We believe that an ‘all things in moderation, including moderation’ approach is a great philosophy.”
Ken Goldwasser and Randi Layne Randi and Ken have always been fit-minded, and together they have continued this outlook. “Morning workouts are key for us,” Randi says. “If we don’t do it then it just doesn’t seem to happen.” Together they motivate each other to keep fit and active. “We really enjoy working out together. We don’t compete, just encourage.” Randi was a classically trained dancer and ballet instructor for years. Working in the fashion industry requires her to be in top shape, so her regimen includes regular weight training, aerobics and yoga. Ken has participated in a variety of team and individual sports throughout his life, including the world of professional motorsports, both on and off the track. They both enjoy walking together, taking an occasional exercise class and eating local, fresh and organic foods. “Our long walks give us the opportunity to communicate about everything. We plan, problem solve and create while taking a brisk walk. It’s cathartic,” Randi says. They also love to cook and experiment with flavors and preparation. There are many Sunday afternoons that you can find them both in the kitchen with the extended family in close proximity. www.bestselfconnect.com

Kaiser Permanente: Helping Heart Patients Thrive
Pictured from right to left are Cardiologists Khalid Shash, M.D., Utpal Pandya, M.D. (chief of cardiology), and Ali Rahimi, M.D. February is Heart Month, but Kaiser Permanente of Georgia’s team of board-certified cardiologists spends each day helping patients with heart conditions thrive. With labs equipped with state-of-the-art tools for stress testing, imaging and heart monitoring, Kaiser Permanente offers a full line of cardiovascular care at several metro Atlanta locations. Outpatient vascular procedures are also performed on-site. The latest addition to Kaiser Permanente’s cardiology services is the Heart Failure Clinic at its Southwood Medical Center. In a single appointment, patients with severely weakened hearts meet one-on-one with a cardiologist, clinical pharmacist and nutritionist to discuss their heart health. As a proactive measure, patients are also screened for depression. The goal is to provide a coordinated approach to care and allow patients to partner with their health care team to create a comprehensive treatment plan.
Kaiser Permanente of Georgia www.kp.org
Kaiser Permanente of Georgia is the state’s largest not-for-profit health plan with 28 medical offices in the metro Atlanta area.
Roughly 5.7 million people in the United States are living with heart failure, which occurs when the heart cannot pump enough blood to other organs. Coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes are the leading causes of heart failure. Risk factors include smoking, excess weight, a sedentary lifestyle and a diet high in fat, cholesterol and sodium. To keep your heart healthy, Kaiser Permanente’s cardiology team offers the following tips: Get your heart pumping—Exercise for 150 minutes each week or 30 minutes on most days. Brisk walking, cycling and swimming are especially good for the heart. If you have a heart condition, check with your doctor before starting a new exercise regimen. Maintain a healthy weight—Lowering your weight by just 10 percent can make difference in your heart’s health. De-stress your life—Stress, anger, anxiety and depression may keep your blood pressure high and increase your risk for heart attack, stroke and other illnesses. Monitor your cholesterol and blood pressure—Too much cholesterol can block your blood vessels and cause chest pain, a heart attack or a stroke. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a leading cause of heart disease, and some people do not experience symptoms. To learn more, visit www.kp.org

Having a Facelift AND a “Natural” Result? Understanding How Facelifts have Evolved
Facelifts have been performed for decades. Initially, they were available only to the rich and famous. Later, facelifts, and plastic surgery in general, became a status symbol among those who had disposable income. However, nowadays, 60% of cosmetic surgery is performed on individuals making $60,000 a year or less. In fact, over the past 15 years, the number of cosmetic procedures has increased by 197%. One of the most commonly requested facial plastic surgery procedures is a facelift.
How does our face age? As facial plastic surgery has evolved, and become more routine in today’s population, one common denominator has driven the market: everyone’s face ages. Research demonstrates that our face ages in three major ways: 1) our skin changes with time, 2) our skin loses elasticity, and 3) our face loses volume, not just in the form of fat, but also with thinning muscles, and decreasing bone density.
A Natural Facelift Understanding how our face ages, along with improvements in facelift techniques over the last 10 years, has increased patient satisfaction. These advances have resulted in the creation of the “Natural Facelift.” This new type of facelift is a hybrid which incorporates the use of other techniques, materials, and treatments in addition to surgery. Components of the Natural Facelift include facial volumization with stateof-the art injectables such as Sculptra AestheticTM; an advanced surgical approach that lifts the skin and facial structures at a natural angle/degree and is dependent on an individual’s personal facial anatomy; and a decreased “pulling” on the skin which eliminates the “pulled” or “fake” look that has been fodder for late-night comedians for years. Additionally, to achieve a balanced and proportional result, eyelid and browlift surgery is recommended at the same time so that the entire face
appears rejuvenated and is able to age “in sync.” Many times a necklift is also performed to assure a more consistent, youthful appearance. Skin treatments, before and after the surgery, are used to improve any rough texture, lines, wrinkles, or discoloration. It is important to note that maintaining a Natural Facelift is a must. This is accomplished with annual skin care treatments, and the replenishment of facial volume (with injectables) as it diminishes. Happily, once the clock is turned back with a facelift, you never lose the benefits that are gained. As a result, the trend we are seeing is patients who opt to have a facelift at an earlier age before the aging process requires greater intervention.
Choosing your Surgeon Choosing the correct surgeon for a facelift is critical. After all, it’s your face: not something that can be hidden away if you have a poor result. The choice of a reputable, board-certified surgeon who is experienced and trained in these specific facial plastic surgery techniques is paramount. If you are interested in a Natural Facelift, your surgeon should have extensive experience with, and an understanding of, the latest facial research, volumizing injection approaches, and facial-lifting techniques.

Will I lose control while under hypnosis? The answer is absolutely not. Hypnosis is always voluntary. If anything were said during the session that went against your selfconcept or morals your subconscious mind would resist. At any time during your session you could simply open your eyes and the session would be over.
How does hypnotherapy help with weight loss?
Please refer to our website for the Specials on Laser & Botox Liposuction: $1000 per area Face Fat Transfer: Starting at $2000 Vein Sclerotherapy: $300 per hour Botox $150/area or $8/unit
Most people do not understand the true power of subconscious mind. There are many sources that are constantly programming the subconscious for weight gain. One of the functions of the subconscious mind is to act out all of the ideas and concepts that flow from the conscious mind. So, when you are exposed to numerous radio and television weight loss ads and even your own thoughts about weight loss, this information flows into the subconscious and develops a concept. This concept is; it is hard to lose weight. The subconscious mind then acts out the concept or idea by making it difficult to lose the weight. You may even gain weight. Consequently, you have to be careful what you tell yourself and monitor the messages you’re receiving about weight loss. Hypnosis gives you the power to reprogram your subconscious to achieve your weight loss goals.
Can hypnotherapy help me find love? Hypnotherapy can help you find love by reprograming your subconscious mind to help you be more open to receive love, to be more confident and get rid of negative energy or baggage. Thus, making you more attractive to the opposite sex.

Feb. 9 TASTE OF LOVE GALA
It’s not really what you expect to see on a cold February day: hundreds of people running in their underwear. However, scantily-clad participants of Cupid’s Undie Run will be making their way through Midtown’s bar district on Feb. 9 with the goal of raising money for Neurofibromatosis (NF) research and the Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF). Two years ago, Cupid Run founders and Lilburn, GA residents Brendan Hanrahan, Chad Leathers and Bobby Gill set off on a mission to raise awareness and donations to the CTF after Chad’s brother, Drew, was diagnosed with NF. The first run took place in 2010 in Washington D.C. Although they estimated having around 30 people, over 600 participants showed up and ran in six feet of snow. “It is amazing what a team of driven and blissfully ignorant people can accomplish,” Chad recalls. Today, Cupid’s Undie Run is a nationally recognized non-profit, operated by dozens of volunteers across the country. “My hope is to make Cupid’s Undie Run a household name,” Chad says. “I know if we can do that, we will be one step closer to not only making people aware of NF, but funding its end.” Get involved: Tell a friend, register to run or volunteer at www.CupidsUndieRun.com
Helping Students Achieve

If you are looking to donate your gently-used clothing or shoes, then head over to Laurus Technical Institute’s Decatur or Jonesboro campus. Through the end of this month, the school is accepting clothing donations in order to help some students in need. “Some of our students have made great sacrifices in order to go to school and better their lives,” says Cathy Hall, Senior Student Services Coordinator at LTI. “Our mission is to make sure all students have the resources to successfully complete their chosen programs, no matter their needs.” The school offers students business attire for mock or job interviews and everyday clothing free of charge. The remainder of the donations will be given to Goodwill and the Salvation Army. Laurus Technical Institute has hosted drives since 2009 and has raised roughly $6,500 in food and clothing donations, which are available on campus throughout the year. For more information, please call Cathy Hall at (678) 702-7602, www.laurus.edu

Get The Body You Want at Slender Spa Med
Pay for college without going broke! Free local workshops help parents save thousands! Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

Did You Know? The Southeastern Region of the United States is known as the “Kidney Stone Belt” because of the high incidence of kidney stone disease. One reason people living in the South are at higher risk is the hot climate which causes dehydration. Southern dietary factors also contribute to the “Kidney Stone Belt” phenomenon. Men are more likely to develop kidney stones; the male to female ratio is nearly 4 to 1. Kidney stones are most common between the ages of 20 and 40. Once you have had one stone, you are more likely to develop another. Also, kidney stones tend to run in families. To schedule an appointment within 24 business hours for kidney stone pain, call our Kidney Stone Hotline at 1-855-786-6311 anytime (day or night).
Georgia Urology delivers the most advanced urological care available. As the largest urology practice in the Southeast, our 38 highly-trained and experienced urologists specialize in the medical and surgical management of all genitourinary conditions in men, women, adolescents and children including: • Urological cancers (including prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular) • Male and female incontinence • Kidney stones • Prostate problems • Erectile dysfunction • Urinary tract infections • Male reproductive health and infertility (including vasectomy and vasectomy reversal) • Pediatric urology
