Meet Our Team of Aesthetic Dentists
It’s Time to Nominate for the 2019 Over 40 & Fabulous! contest ... a great way to raise awareness for your give-back cause. Our 9th Annual Over 40 & Fabulous! contest kicks off Feb. 1 and this year promises to be the most exciting ever, as Best Self Atlanta also celebrates its 10-year anniversary.
If you are passionate about a give-back cause, participating in the contest is a great way to raise awareness, money, and meet fellow Atlantans who want to support your crusade. Our 2018 Over 40 & Fabulous! winner, Lynne McDonald, had this to say about her involvement.
“The Over 40 & Fabulous! experience was such a gift. It provided a platform to talk about Type 1 diabetes and help people understand that these kids are dealing with a life-threatening disease on a daily basis. It has raised awareness for best Camp Kudzu and the extraordinary community and support the camp provides. We are going into our 20th year and breaking records Celebrating 2018 Over 40 Fabulou&s! with the help of Best Self. People have reached out to me personally to help them navigate through nutrition information and doctor’s advice, which has driven me to write a book on the subject to help as many people as I can get healthy. Being associated with the inspirational people of this experience has elevated me to do more, rise up and be my best self!” Atlanta’s “go-to”

Each year, the nominees we receive look great and are serious about staying active and their commitment to a healthy lifestyle. But what I love most, is that they “do good” for others—and that is more often than not, the reason they become a part of our Over 40 & Fabulous! family.

Speaking of shattering notions of what life after 40 is like, nominations for our 9th Annual Over 40 & Fabulous! contest are officially underway. From Feb. 1 to March 1, head to BestSelfAtlanta.com to nominate the men and women you know that make looking good, feeling good, and doing good a priority. If that describes you, nominate yourself! This contest is an amazing way to raise awareness for a cause you are passionate about while connecting with like-minded locals. And when it comes to putting priorities at the top of the list, “Families That Fit Together,” page 25, showcases how local parents have made staying active and healthy a vital part of how they bond with their children. From fitness challenges to exploring the outdoors, these households place movement and time together above all else. We also talk to Lyn Ross, a master aesthetician, about her revolutionary skin care approach. Plus, experts discuss treatments for aging eye dilemmas. As the buzz of a new year begins to wear away and the boldness to pursue resolutions can start to diminish, I hope this issue reminds you of the importance of living life on your own terms. Happy reading,

Amazing One-Hour Makeovers!
Whether you’re 45 or 25, dating horror stories seem to abound among every age group. Who hasn’t listened to a girlfriend recount a dinner gone awry or read out loud a cringeworthy dating app message? This is why I am so in love with this issue. Four Atlanta couples share their love stories (p.32) and prove that yes, there are indeed plenty of fish in the sea, and it’s still possible to find a great catch. These lovebirds will fill your heart with hope if you’re still searching for that special someone. If you’ve already found your life partner, like I have, it will remind you to cherish them.

bestbites Roasted Asparagus with Cashew Hollandaise Chef Victoria Shore helms the kitchen at health-focused Krog Street Market eatery, Recess. The culinarian grew up cooking with her family in Alpharetta. Here, she shares a recipe ideal for asparagus season. Roasted for more depth of flavor, this vegetable is paired with a guilt-free, cashew-based hollandaise sauce and crunchy toasted rye breadcrumbs.
For the asparagus: • 1 bunch asparagus, medium to small size • Olive oil, to coat • Salt and pepper For the hollandaise: • ½ cup raw cashews, soaked overnight • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (about half a lemon) • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar • ¼ teaspoon turmeric (for color) • ½ tablespoon Dijon mustard • ¼ cup olive oil • 1 teaspoon salt
For the breadcrumbs: • 2 slices day-old rye bread (or other crusty dense loaf) • 2 tablespoons olive oil, more as needed • 1 garlic clove • 1 lemon
Tear the bread into small pieces, about pea-size. Zest the lemon (you can use the juice for the hollandaise) and grate the garlic on the zester. If you do not have a zester, peel the lemon with a vegetable peeler and chop lemon peel and garlic very fine.
INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 375 F.
Heat oil in a large, heavy-bottom skillet. Add the breadcrumbs and toast, stirring frequently, over medium heat until the bread is crispy and golden brown. Remove from the heat and stir in the garlic and lemon zest.
Trim any dry or woody ends from the asparagus, toss with oil, salt and pepper and roast in oven for 12 to 15 minutes. In a blender or food processor, combine all of the hollandaise ingredients and blend until smooth and creamy, adding up to ¼ cup of water as needed.
To serve, arrange the asparagus on a platter, drizzle with hollandaise and sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Details: 99 Krog St. NE., V, Atlanta; RecessAtl.com

Clean Beauty By Alex McCray
For nearly a century, few legislative steps have been taken to ensure that personal care products in the United States are safe. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), an activist organization that specializes in research and advocacy in the area of toxic chemicals, this means that chemicals linked to cancer, damaging reproductive systems, and beyond, can easily wind up in the items we use every day.
As awareness of this issue grows, more shoppers are turning to cleaner beauty and skin care products made with safer ingredients. With an increase of untainted options to choose from online or in stores, ridding your vanity of toxin-filled products doesn’t mean sacrificing quality. Here is a snapshot of resources to help you make the change.
Makeup The EWG makes it easy to know what’s in the products you use and how potentially dangerous they may be. Its Skin Deep® database allows you to search for items and see safety and ingredient ratings assigned by scientists for over 70,000 products and 2,000 brands. There’s also a handy EWG app that allows you to scan barcodes quickly at the store. Brands like Beautycounter offer high-quality cosmetics that are free of 1,500 questionable chemicals such as butylated hydroxy anisole and butylated hydroxytoluene, which extend the shelf life of products like lipsticks but are likely carcinogens and may cause liver damage. The company also advocates for legislative change says Ashley H. Monk, an Atlanta Beautycounter consultant. 20

Skin Care and Body Care For this category, controversial ingredients can often be found in deodorants, moisturizers, bath products and more. When it comes to using natural skin care and body care products, Dirty Beauty founder, Samantha Dickey says, “Natural skin care performs and delivers extraordinary results when used in the correct application.” Her local line of farm-based products combines the best of science and nature for true effectiveness. One of Dirty Beauty’s most popular products demonstrates this harmonious unison perfectly. “STRIP is both a makeup remover and one-step cleanser,” says the professional engineer. “Oil and water don’t mix but oil and oil do. With STRIP, you are using the oil cleansing method to gently remove makeup and grime that accumulates on your skin.”

Sephora has jumped on the bandwagon too. The makeup mecca recently launched its Clean at Sephora seal. This makes it easy to browse for skin care, makeup, hair care, and fragrance items without sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, mineral oils, and more both in-store and online.
Along with other Atlanta-based green beauty and body care brands such as Sally B’s Skin Yummies and Little Barn Apothecary, there are local stores such as Fig & Flower that you can visit to test-drive products in-person to see which ones work best for you. Removing harmful products from your daily beauty routine can seem daunting but today’s resources are making the switch easier than ever. Families THATFITtogether By Jennifer Colosimo
Fitness goals can be lonely, and most likely short-term—especially for busy families. But parents who set a good, healthy example for their children have the power to arm their offspring with the tools to live a healthier life well into adulthood. These five Atlanta families have found ways to bond over health and activity, establishing a lifestyle where goals aren’t about losing weight, eating better or exercising more— because, together, they already do that.

Everyday Movement Before they became a family of three, Carly and Patrick Milyo were all about fitness routines. Motivation was easy— Carly is a serious yogi and the founder of Thunderbolt Power Yoga, Patrick loves to play basketball, and both enjoy longboarding and riding bikes. But once their daughter came along, their schedule changed. Organized classes took a back seat and a new perspective on staying active started to evolve. That didn’t mean doing less. For Carly, it became—and still is—about finding more natural ways to stay active as a family. There’s still plenty of “flowing,” but it meant more family walks and bike rides along the Chattahoochee River, and encouraging each other in individual fitness goals, like Patrick’s recent (and first) half marathon. Photo courtesy of Carrly Milyo, photography by Imagine Media Consulting.
“I want to teach Channing what it looks like to incorporate exercise into daily life. Sometimes it seems like people think they need to be taking fitness classes daily, running incessantly or practicing yoga around the clock,” Carly says. “In reality, a variety of different activities— organized or organic like climbing trees, rollerblading, walking our pups, jumping rope—are exercise.”

A Challenge to Conquer
When Abbe Kantor was turning 50, she and her husband decided to implement a “90 Days of Fitness” mission with their 13-year-old son, Max. Together, the family attended personal training sessions, took strength training classes and started walking outdoors. Seven years later, they’re still working out together. “Working toward a common goal helps us focus on health and wellness, learn how to exercise without injury and spend time together as a family,” Kantor says. “When we first began our journey, we looked for something fun that we could all do together. We made a firm commitment that all three of us would attend. Our son is in college now, and when he comes home, he still joins my husband and I at our personal training sessions at Concourse Athletic Club.”

You can also find the Kantors participating in spin classes, signing up to run 5Ks, such as the 2017 Mercedes-Benz Stadium 5K/Walk Like MADD event, and spending idle time (at home or on vacation) exploring new places on foot. They eat nutritious meals, often whipping up salmon, brown rice, and stir-fried vegetables, and focus on good karma and, in all of it, preserving the power of family.

Junie Weinstein has always loved to stay active. In fact, she continued her fitness routine through both of her pregnancies by working with a trainer, doing Pilates, and attending group classes. Once her children, Julian, 11, and Isabella, 7, were born, they came right along with her to the gym. Now, both of her kids have lots of energy and are highly competitive.
They like running around the track at Windy Hill Athletic Club, shooting baskets, and even joining mom in a fitness class— things they actually all like to do, together (even playing basketball, which Weinstein will admit is fun, but not her forte). “Staying fit in both our mind and body has just always been a part of our lives,” says Weinstein. “It allows us to spend time together doing something that improves both our mental and physical health,” notes the creator of EpitoMoi Designs: Jewelry by Junie. Her husband, Ian, enjoys working with a personal trainer and doing high-intensity interval training.

Motivated by Health
Weinstein and her hubby use staying active as a way to combat their family histories of diabetes and high blood pressure. It was important they practice healthy eating habits early, so that their kids would continue to do so in their adult lives.

Going with the Flow
“Justin and I both grew up playing sports,” says Kelli Earls, who met her husband at The University of Georgia, where he played baseball and she played soccer for the school. “Our first date was a run through the botanical garden! To say the least, it’s extremely important for us to stay active and share all the things we love with our family.” And now that Elliott, their toddler, is here, they spend as much time as they can outside walking the neighborhood, hiking or playing by the river.
Photography by (right) Devon McKenna, Photosynthesis Studio. Photo courtesy of (left) Kelli Earls.
To complement a baby-centric schedule, they built their own gym in the garage, made more efficient by circuit workouts that don’t require a lot of equipment and incorporate body-weight movements, ropes, and bands. “I truly believe I’m a better mom and wife when I take care of myself,” Earls says, expecting their second daughter this year. “We want our children to grow up seeing us do that. Elliott already looks forward to our walks and wants to be outside running around any chance she can get. My husband is excited to teach her how to fly fish when she is older!”

Focused on Fun
“Simply stated, if you’re having fun staying fit, you’re more likely to repeat that behavior,” says Kristen Marotte, wife to Paul, and mom to Alyssa, 16, and Blake, 14. This is her family’s secret to staying healthy. “We each do activities that speak to us individually, but we find common ground in goal-setting and the pursuit of improving our game.”
For the Life Time Athletic, Sandy Springs members, that includes lacrosse and swimming for the kids, spinning, boot camp and yoga classes for mom, and weight lifting for dad—all part of a carefully curated schedule around a fitness way of life; but the planning precision rests on the almost sacred importance of family dinnertime. “We have always emphasized the importance of feeling healthy, rather than looking fit,” Marotte says. “By cooking meals ourselves, we know exactly what is going in our bodies, and more importantly, we connect at the dinner table. The four of us sit and talk about what’s going on in our lives daily. A big part of being healthy is having a clear mind, so this opportunity to engage in safe, open discussions about life is the foundation to being fit.” Sources Concourse Athletic Club | ConcourseClub.com Life Time Athletic, Sandy Springs | LifeTime.life bestselfatlanta.com

Married for 10 years
Maria Teresa Rodriguez-Curtis, 42, and Keith Curtis, 51 Met through Single Atlanta Prior to meeting in 2007, Maria and Keith were each newly divorced with five young children among the two of them. Frustrated with the bar-hopping dating scene, they each sought out nontraditional methods of meeting that special someone, and eventually landed on matchmaking service Single Atlanta. Keith became known as the service’s pickiest client and Maria participated on a whim with a free trial. The stars eventually aligned, somewhat, as Maria became Keith’s fourth match and Keith became Maria’s second match. Once the two waded through earlier matches, they met each other and it was love at first sight. Literally. “Single Atlanta offered its clients the option to see a picture of their potential dates; Keith and I both opted not to see pictures,” says Maria. “We were perfectly comfortable, for the most part, being matched based on non-aesthetic qualities of a potential match. We both trusted the matchmaking counselors and the process.”
Photography by CatMax Photography, hair and makeup by The Green Room Agency.
They both bonded over the love for their children and God, as well as their desire to find soul mates. About two years after their first date, Keith and Maria married in front of their newly blended family, and their marriage has withstood the test of time over nearly 10 years. “We both chose to be very intentional about dating; we sought a relationship that would last forever,” says Maria. “As a thirtysomething woman, I found it difficult to find a potential partner that didn’t mind when I talked about my kids. I struggled with putting myself out there, opening up to someone, and I feared rejection.”
as It w rst t fi a e ov l sight.
Not trusting her own dating instincts is what pushed Maria toward a matchmaking service, like Single Atlanta. Her journey toward true love was guided by a professional agency that could help her fulfill her dreams and fill the voids left in her heart by past relationships. “[Single Atlanta] opened our minds to try new things and meet new people,” she continues. “They offered a sense of security while also offering a sense of exploration. Dating can be fun and exciting at any age!”

Adam Ghali, 68, and Jacklyn Ghali, 64 Met on Match.com Jacklyn Ghali’s love life seems to be straight out of a romance novel—a hair color specialist, divorced for 30 years, catches the eye of a glamorous man with a sexy foreign accent. The two fall in love and eventually get married in his native Egypt, taking a spectacular cruise down the Nile River, where both their families meet in Alexandria. The couple sails off into the sunset, back to the United States and eventually celebrates their nuptials with their friends and families back in Atlanta. So there may not be any dastardly pirate or a menacing vampire, but Adam and Jacklyn Ghali’s love story is primed for novelization. The
two first met on Match.com after this “happily divorced” woman decided it was time to get back on the dating train. Instead of filling out the questionnaire with her standard responses, she decided to think outside the box and target a relationship that didn’t fit the usual men she looked for. She opened her heart to love and the perfect man stepped in. “The first time I saw him at Villa Christina, he came running down the stairs and I kept thinking, ‘This person enters a room like a member of the Rat Pack!’” Jacklyn says. “I was so busy looking at his feet and legs, it took me a second to realize he was headed straight toward me. When he got close to me, he said my name in a beautiful accent, put his hands on my face and kissed me on my cheek three times. I thought, ‘Oh my God, this will be the one!’”
Photography by Richie Arpino.
ct e f r e p The n ma d steppe in.
The eye-catching moment led her to a flourishing, healthy relationship, where each partner respects and appreciates each other. He loves to cook elaborate dishes and she brings home lovely flowers, as they ignore generic gender roles and celebrate his and her strengths and wants. Though at times, Jacklyn loves the “old-fashioned rules” of courting, where the man holds the door, helps put on her coat and lovingly pursues her. “We listen to what each other has to say,” she says.
When it comes to dating, she credits her realization looking beyond what she had always sought in a potential partner. “My dating advice to people, whether male or female, is not necessarily opposites attract, but maybe try a different path.”

Adrienne Allen, 44, and Floyd Allen, 46 Met at work Sometimes you actively seek out love and sometimes it just pops up out of nowhere, even at the watercooler. That’s what happened for Adrienne and Floyd Allen—their work lives coalesced into their love lives, eventually leading to a wedding in May 2017. Adrienne, originally from Baltimore, Maryland, and a mother of three from her first marriage, admits it wasn’t love at first sight, or rather sound, when she started at her job in 2016, where Floyd had already been employed for eight years.
“He did not like me at first and told his mom that the ‘loud girl’ at work wouldn’t leave him alone. He had been single for eight years and wasn’t interested in a relationship at all,” she says. But she was persistent about going out with him. The two talked more at work, grabbed lunch and, over time, started conversing and socializing away from the office. When he found out that his mom, who is also originally from Baltimore, shares the same birthdate as Adrienne, it became a bonding moment the two couldn’t ignore.

Married almost 2 years
The couple may be opposites—in fact, one of Adrienne’s favorite things about her husband is his “quiet power”—but it’s this celebration of each other’s differences that she credits to the strength of their relationship. They each enjoy their own space while being together—he has his man cave; she has the living room. But they continue to come together, still dating and eating lunch together.
did e e “H ike m l not irst...” at f
“Dating requires effort from everyone involved,” Adrienne says. “Go to your favorite spots and pay attention to the people that make your heart smile; those are the people you want to keep around. After 40, people don’t have time for the games—stay in your truth and don’t waiver. The best is yet to come!”

DATING 6 MONTHS
Margaret “Garet” Hayes, 48, and Tim Duff, 54 Met through Eight at Eight Dinner Club Whereas politics have been known to tear relationships apart (especially in today’s turbulent climate), politics is what brought new couple Tim and Garet together. The two met through Eight at Eight Dinner Club, seated next to each other at one such dinner. When the topic of politics popped up, Garet joked that perhaps the group should avoid such a sensitive subject; Tim interjected with a clever quip about easing into any subject matter. That was it. As Garet puts it, “He had me at politics.”
Garet, divorced for six years, and Tim, divorced for seven years with two children, each turned to Eight at Eight Dinner Club after trying, unsuccessfully, online dating. “I hated online dating because I felt like I had to convince someone that I was a decent person before I could even get a response,” says Tim. “I really liked Eight at Eight because it allows you to meet someone in person and see who they are right up front. While anyone can act differently in person too, it still gives you a much better way to gauge your interest and compatibility.”
Photography by CatMax Photography, hair and makeup by The Green Room Agency.
Tim and Garet have been together for six months and they both credit timing and communication as the key factors to finding the right partner, and flexibility and fun to keeping the bond strong. Garet also advises that any singles over the age of 40 invest in themselves, learning about what makes you happy and what you want out of life. She also says that every relationship, failed or successful, has something to teach: make strong friendships and if one way of meeting singles isn’t working, keep trying other ways.
“He had me at olitics.”
p
Tim agrees with Garet, adding that dating at an older age creates a different set of rules. “I am looking for a partner but I’m not willing to be with the wrong person just to avoid being alone,” says Tim. “I think at our age, it’s easier to know what you are looking for in a relationship. When you are in your 20s, there’s this goal of finding someone to marry and start a family. While I don’t need anyone in my life to make it fulfilled, I want someone to share my life with.”

Chronic Shoulder Pain? Tendonitis? Sprain/Strain? Solution: Bio-Regenerative Injection Therapy Because the shoulder has the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body, it must balance strength, flexibility and stability. This balance can be maintained through exercises aimed at stretching and strengthening the supporting structures to avoid pain and injuries during specific activities. Problems are generally due to overuse, which weakens and destabilizes the rotator cuff. About 20% of sports injuries involve the shoulder. So what to do? Enter Bio-Sclerotic Proliferation Injection Therapy! The treatment causes the proliferation (growth, formation) of new ligament tissue in the areas where it has become weak. A biological (not toxic, non steroidal) solution is used, which is injected in the suspect area. This causes a localized inflammation in these weak areas which then increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients and stimulates the tissue to repair itself including increased cytokine production, which are the building blocks for cartilage and other connective tissue.

Screening for Colon Cancer FAQ’s By Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates
Q
How common is colon cancer?
Q
When should I get screened?
A
Colon cancer is the third most common diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. When detected in its early stages during a screening colonoscopy, colon cancer is also one of the most highly treatable and preventable cancers.
A
Colon Cancer. It doesn’t discriminate.
Most medical guidelines recommend colon cancer screening begins for all averagerisk adults starting at age 50. Those with a family history of colon cancer or polyps are at higher risk and should start screening earlier.
Q
What are the symptoms for colon cancer?
A
Colon cancer doesn’t cause symptoms until its late stages and its symptoms are not unique – change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, cramping, unintended weight loss. So, if you’re experiencing any type of digestive symptom, do not ignore it, and see your doctor.
Regardless of gender or race, colon cancer can affect anyone. But it is preventable. If it’s time for your screening colonoscopy, call us today.

Q
What are my screening options?
A
While any preventive screening is encouraged, not all methods are created equal. Popular at-home, stoolbased tests are convenient, but they can miss colon polyps and some cancers and have resulted in many false-positive readings. Research confirms that colonoscopy remains the only screening method that both detects and prevents cancer through polyp detection and removal.

Spine Therapy vs. Conventional Physical Therapy Is There Really a Difference? By Robert Medcalf, PT, OCS, Dip MDT

or patients who suffer with back or neck pain, physical therapy is one of many conservative options available to assist in their recovery. Over the years, conventional physical therapy for the spinal pain sufferer consisted of hot packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, generalized massage and nonspecific exercises. While most current physical therapy clinical practice guidelines do not support the use of passive modalities for neck and back pain, their use is still common. Modalities: •Can provide patients with shortterm pain relief •Have not been shown to accelerate the recovery time of patients with painful spinal disorders.
The ultimate goal is to teach patients specific procedures that they can use to gain rapid pain control, which ultimately will lead to their recovery. The methods used are directionally specific exercises, postural and ergonomic advice.
•Because some of the treatments provide temporary, soothing relief of the pain, they have the potential to cause the patient to become dependent on them. When the relief wears off, the patient may feel compelled to return for more treatments. Besides being very costly, these treatments fail to progress the patient toward recovery of function. Physical therapists utilizing modern methods of treatment generally believe that patients should be active participants in their physical therapy programs. These spine therapists utilize an evidence-based approach to treatment. This includes an emphasis on empowering the patient to manage his

Manual therapy is also an important treatment component and is used as needed to assist in the recovery process. Manual therapy involves skilled, handson techniques to reduce pain, improve range of motion and function, and enhance the patient’s own self-treatment procedures. Regenerative Medicine… The Fountain of Youth? By Michael Siciliano, MD
R
egenerative medicine itself isn’t new— the first bone marrow and solid-organ transplants were done decades ago. But advances in developmental and cell biology, immunology, and other fields have unlocked new opportunities to refine existing regenerative therapies and create even better ones. While regenerative medicine encompasses the whole body, this article focuses on the repair of extremity neuropathies and damaged joints. With regards to regeneration treatments, three very popular treatments are listed below:
and healthy. The issue with this treatment is that the viability of the cells is not always verifiable unless the provider can give you independent lab results certifying this. 3.Autologous derived stem cell therapy is derived from your own adipose tissue or bone morrow. These treatments have proved themselves to be effective. However, it can be argued that because the source is you, the cells are as old as the patient and may not be as robust and healthy as expected. Additionally, the extraction itself can be uncomfortable and carries some risk.
1.Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) involves extracting a small amount of the patient’s blood, then extracting and concentrating something called growth factors, which are responsible for inducing new tissue re-growth. Not all PRP is the same and the quality and effectiveness of PRP treatments varies considerably between doctors. 2.Umbilical Cord Derived Cell Therapy (UC/WJ-MSC) is when proliferating factors, including stem cells, are extracted from the umbilical cord and is one of the most useful sources of stem cells we know of. It’s been in use for nearly 20 years in treating children with blood disease, and has increasingly become more common in adult treatments, because extraction is immediately after birth, with no harm or risk to the mother or baby and poses no ethical issues such as embryonic derived cell therapy. This makes it not only a noninvasive and lower cost source of stem cells, but an incredibly healthy source too, due to minimal damage from pollution and ageing because the source is so young
9 KEY FACTORS WHEN CHOOSING A STEM CELL / PRP FACILITY Focus on more than just stem cells. Stem cells and PRP are some of the most powerful tools to aid in regeneration and healing, however, they do not operate in a vacuum. Other adjuvant tools are required to promote health and healing within the body. Individualized therapy. Regenerative therapy is not one size fits all. Each patient’s treatment, condition and health should be focused on aiding the body to heal in a manner consistent with that individual. Clinical research and published studies. Ensure the facility provides the science to back up
their protocols and claims vs. smoke and mirrors. Length of time practicing regenerative medicine. Make sure the practice is not one of the many fly-by-night operations. The practice should be well-established, licensed, and experienced in regenerative medicine. An integrative team approach. The practice should have a team of professionals with multiple scopes collaborating to determine the right care for the patient at the right time. Rome was not built in a day. The one-and-done approach, while convenient and ubiquitous ignores the fact that the body often requires multiple treatments to respond. One stem cell or PRP injection to an area ravaged by injury, disease and time is not always the most effective approach. Rent-a-doc. Many stem cell providers employ no full-time medical doctors and only use a part-time nurse practitioner (NP). Legitimate centers should have full-time trained medical physicians. Adjacent Segment Treatment (AST) Ligament laxity in the surrounding structures being treated is often overlooked and is not readily apparent. It is important the treating physician practice the AST approach so as to stabilize all weakened surrounding structures. A guarantee. While not always possible and highly variable depending on the individual patient’s case, some high level treatment centers offer an assurance of outcome and a plan B at no charge, should the guaranteed outcome not be achieved.

RESOLVING EYE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY AGE
By Karon Warren
As we grow older, it’s not uncommon to experience various aches and pains as our bodies age. That applies to our eyes as well, which also suffer the effects of getting older. We find it harder to read things up close, our vision starts to cloud and our eyes start to dry out more now than ever before. These all are indicators of age-related eye problems that become more common after the age of 40. A family history of eye disease and a past need for glasses play a vital role in prescribed eye exam frequency to screen for these everyday issues, but thankfully, in most cases, easy-to-implement treatments are available.

REFRACTIVE ERROR In simple terms, refractive error means the shape of your eye doesn’t bend light correctly, resulting in nearsightedness and farsightedness. For most people, this starts before 40, but can worsen with age. As a result, people would need reading or regular glasses or contacts.
Cataract A cataract occurs when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy over time. “Cataracts can cause people to have more trouble reading the restaurant menu because there is not enough light,” says T. Chris McCurry, MD, refractive specialist at Woodhams Eye Clinic. “It can also cause driving at night to be very difficult because of glare from the car lights and street lights.” Although it cannot be prevented, wearing sunglasses to reduce ultraviolet exposure can help slow down development as can controlling blood sugar and not smoking.
Certain steps can help prevent dry eyes. “Symptoms can be prevented by controlling environmental conditions such as drafts, smoke, low humidity and allergen exposures, avoiding prolonged uninterrupted computer or screen sessions ... ” —Anisa B. Threlkeld, MD
Currently, surgery is the most common treatment to remove cataracts. “It has been done with ultrasound energy traditionally, but laser technology has become a part of the picture,” says Andrew Feinberg, MD, partner at Georgia Eye Partners and medical director at Eye Surgery Center of Georgia. “It’s thought to be gentler to the eye, and we can do specific things like correct astigmatism.”
Glaucoma Simply put, glaucoma is the increased pressure within the eyeball, usually from fluid, that can reduce or eliminate sight. Common treatments for glaucoma are topical medications in the form of eye drops, laser surgery or incisional surgery.
Dry Eye Disease As the name implies, dry eyes result when the eyes do not stay lubricated. This issue can be caused by not producing enough tears but, more commonly, happens because the

body does not produce good quality tears, especially as we age. “It can manifest as burning, irritation, foreign body sensation (like something is in the eye), intermittent blurry vision and even tearing,” McCurry says. Certain steps can help prevent dry eyes. “Symptoms can be prevented by controlling environmental conditions such as drafts, smoke, low humidity and allergen exposures, avoiding prolonged uninterrupted computer or screen sessions, consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and by engaging in regular exercise to optimize cardiovascular health and improve blood flow,” says Anisa B. Threlkeld, MD, physician/owner of North Atlanta Eye Care. Treatments range from over-the-counter drops, gels, and ointments, to prescription drops, and sometimes to minor procedures depending on the cause, says Jonathan Woolfson, MD, president and founder of Woolfson Eye Institute.

Macular Degeneration Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that damages the macula, which is the center of the retina and is responsible for detail vision. This damage can cause distorted, blurred, or severe loss of vision in the central visual field. Those who smoke, are over the age of 60, and have a family history of AMD are at risk. The condition occurs in two basic forms, dry and wet, explains Paul Kaufman, MD, and Jessica McCluskey, MD, of Thomas Eye Group. Dry AMD results in bare patches of vision because the macula is no longer getting the proper nourishment and support it needs. Whereas wet AMD may create rapid central vision loss caused by bleeding or leaking abnormal blood vessels that grow under the macula. Recently, medications have been developed that can be injected into the eye of someone with active wet AMD, often resulting in the shrinking of the abnormal vessels. With adequate treatment, most patients will experience stability or improvement in their vision. So far, treatment to reverse dry AMD has been unsuccessful, although much research is being performed in this area. Early detection through exams at least once a year can increase the chances of treating AMD successfully.
Presbyopia Presbyopia is the natural aging process of the eye. “The natural lens becomes less flexible, making it harder to perform near tasks,” Threlkeld says. “If uncorrected, it can lead to fatigue or headaches.”
Unfortunately, there’s nothing to be done to prevent it. For most patients, glasses or contacts are required to counteract the effects of presbyopia. Laser refractive surgery, commonly known by brand names like LASIK, PRK and SMILE, is another treatment option. Another, newer option is PreLex™ surgery. “PreLex™ works by removing your natural lens with any degree of hardening and/or cloudiness, and replacing it with special lenses that give you a range of vision without glasses,” McCurry says. Evolving Treatments As with all medical research, treatments for these and other eye ailments continue to change and evolve, leading to more effective treatments in the future. One such treatment involves stem cell therapy, but experts caution against using these treatments this early in the process. Currently, there has been a lot of discussion about it, which leads to a lot of hope for the future, Woolfson says. However, at the moment, there are no proven treatments. “We’ve been very careful to stay with treatments with proven science behind them,” he says. “[Stem cell therapy] makes a lot of sense, but we don’t know how long it will take until it’s proven and effective.” For now, the best step those age 40 and older can take to keep their eyes healthy is to have regular eye screenings to monitor for early signs of these ailments. “Those with diabetes or other similar systemic medical conditions, or a family history of such conditions may need more frequent screenings,” Feinberg says.

The Power of PreLex™ J. Trevor Woodhams, MD, founder of Woodhams Eye Clinic, explains the popular new PreLex™ surgery and how it’s changing care for aging eyes.
What is PreLex™? PreLex™ is short for presbyopic lens exchange. The procedure involves removing the natural lens in your eye and replacing it with an artificial lens implant. This lens allows your eye to focus up close and at a distance. It will also pre-empt the development of cataracts.
What is the difference between LASIK and PreLex™? Single-vision lens implants, which have been traditionally used in cataract surgery, only allow clear vision focus at one point, either at a distance or up close. The same is true for LASIK, which is usually performed to create clear vision for distance. This is why, for patients over 50 who are losing their near vision, but may also have distance vision issues, the PreLex™ procedure is often a better choice than LASIK.
Does it have any downtime? Patients are typically back to most normal activities within days.
What are the benefits? Unlike LASIK, PreLex™ can correct both distance and near vision problems in the same eye, as well as most types of astigmatism. Plus, your new lens will not change or deteriorate with age like your natural lens, and your vision will remain stable with little or no dependence on corrective lenses.

2019 Diet Review Popular plans get a thumbs-up or down By Nicole Letts
Navigating diet trends can be overwhelming. There are plant-based diets, elimination diets, fat-heavy diets, “caveman” diets, points-based diets, carb-based diets, and the exhaustive list goes on. If you’re finding yourself in uncharted diet waters, reflect on your objectives before setting sail. Then, determine which way of eating—like any of the trends below—will get you to your destination.
Elimination Diet An elimination diet, like Whole30, is best described as
emphasizing clean foods while eliminating sugar, grains, legumes, soy, and dairy. It can also leave individuals with a wealth of knowledge about their bodies. Expert Sonza Curtis, ND, PAC, IFMCP, of Three D Wellness, agrees. “An elimination diet empowers individuals to discover which foods work best for them,” Curtis says. However, she also notes preparing for a diet like Whole30 might be its demise. “It takes more time to prepare meals and pay close attention to food labels when shopping.” Another con might be your social calendar. “Individuals can feel left out or isolated during social outings when eliminating alcohol, sugar, gluten, and dairy from their meals,” she explains. The most important pro, however? “Consuming ‘real’ food in place of processed foods. Whole foods decrease toxic burden, which improves overall health and makes people feel better.”

Ketogenic Diet The ketogenic diet (keto) is perhaps the buzziest diet on our list. Dubbed as 2018’s
most Googled diet, keto is a low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat diet that puts the body in a metabolic state known as ketosis—a ketonesproducing, fat-burning zone. Most participants eat 50 grams (or fewer) of carbohydrates, but some adhere to an even tighter carbohydrate count. O’Neil says, “We’ve had a version of the ketogenic diet for decades. It’s something that really does work—even in a medical or weight management supervised setting—to jump-start fat burning.” However, despite popularity, O’Neil cautions about its longevity. “It’s not something that you can continue for the long haul because it’s not a natural state of affairs to stay in a state of ketosis,” she explains.
Plant-based diets Plant-based diets, sometimes more widely known as veganism, are expected to continue to trend. Leslie Graham, owner of 3:8 Juice & Eatery, says there are two schools of thought here. “Veganism is abstaining from any animal products such as dairy, meat, shellfish, and eggs, as well as purchases of leather products due to animal cruelty. A whole food
plant-based diet is the vegan diet but limited to no oil and no processed foods and is more for your health.” The concept of eliminating processed foods is an integral part of distinguishing between vegan and plant-based diets, especially for weight loss. “Going vegan, you may not experience a significant amount of weight loss because vegan food is heavily processed and full of oil and sugar. Oreos are vegan,” she says. Instead of veganism, Graham suggests focusing on the whole foods plant-based approach. 52

Intermittent fasting Intermittent fasting is defined as a specific window of time when zero to a few calories are consumed. This period could
range from a few hours to a full day, but it is ultimately a cycle of alternating eating with fasting. While participants will inevitably be taking in fewer calories, Carolyn O’Neil, MS, RD, says that intermittent fasting also encourages mindfulness. “It gives you pause. When you do eat, you’re really paying attention, and it’s going to matter more,” she says. The downside? “Experts say when you fast, and then you eat again, your body thinks you may be in a state of starvation. The fear is that when you do begin eating again, your body holds onto every single calorie,” O’Neil explains. If you think you might want to give it a try, consider this: most of us are already practicing intermittent fasting naturally—through sleep.
Mediterranean Another popular way of eating that is not so much a diet but more of a nutrition-focused lifestyle is the Mediterranean approach. Continually noted for its ability to not only lead to weight loss but to also aid in the reduction of diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, and stroke risks, this approach promotes the consumption of primarily
plant-based foods. Its followers are encouraged to load their plates with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Fish and seafood should appear a few times a week, while meats and sweets are limited. Butter, coconut and palm oils get the boot for healthy fats such as extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, and seeds. O’Neil notes, “This is not a vegetarian diet because it includes fish and meats, but enjoyed in moderation with plant foods as the star of the plate.” Whether you’re seeking weight loss for medical or cosmetic reasons, there is certainly a course for you. Curtis says it best. “The key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is to take a personalized approach. The days of one size fits all are over. It’s time for people to discover what works for them to achieve long-lasting results.” Sources

The Lowdown on Shingles There’s a lot of buzz around the new shingles vaccine, Shingrix, which has led to a nationwide shortage, but what exactly is shingles? According to Leslie C. Gray, MD, if you’ve ever had chicken pox, you are at risk for developing shingles. The founder of Dermatology Center of Atlanta says when the varicella-zoster virus lies dormant in the nervous system, it can come back to life years later in the form of the herpes zoster virus, which causes shingles. Shingles can be incredibly painful and can cause long-lasting complications. Candance Kimbrough-Green, MD, of Dermatology Consultants, notes to look for symptoms such as pain, burning, and tingling on one side of the body or face with or without a red rash with blisters. Those most at risk for developing shingles are adults over 50 and those with weakened immune systems. Gray notes that children can also develop the disease and those who have never had chicken pox or haven’t been vaccinated can develop shingles through direct contact with the open sores of the shingles rash. The new Shingrix vaccine is given in two doses, two to six months apart and is advised for all healthy adults over 50. If you’ve already had shingles, you should still receive the vaccine to lower your chances of developing it again. Those who received the old Zostavax vaccine should also get the new vaccine. The great news? Gray explains that Shingrix is incredibly effective and can lower your chances of getting shingles by more than 90 percent. Getting Rid of Vertigo Though it can affect anyone, adults over the age of 50 have an increased risk of developing vertigo due to having multiple medical conditions and taking numerous pharmaceuticals. The most common cause of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Allison Robbins, MPT, physical therapist at Ear, Nose & Throat Institute says, “BPPV is when tiny crystals (otoliths) move from the otolith organs of the inner ear into the semicircular canals of the inner ear, which makes you feel dizzy.” She adds, “It can occur for no known reason or may be associated with a blow to the head or disorders that damage the inner ear.” Vertigo and dizziness can also be caused by circulatory problems or changes in blood pressure, anxiety disorders, anemia, low blood sugar, allergies, other neurological disorders, or dehydration. Treatment depends on the cause. At Ear, Nose & Throat Institute, approaches can include vestibular therapy, which consists of exercises and a plan of care designed to address the findings of diagnostic testing. The exercises retrain the brain so that the visual, vestibular and somatosensory systems communicate appropriately, explains Robbins. For BPPV, head positioning maneuvers (also called canalith repositioning) can help resolve the root of the problem. If you are experiencing vertigo, seek a physician, audiologist and physical therapist to find the underlying reason and to receive treatment for it. Details: ENTInstitute.com bestselfatlanta.com

Co-founded by 27-year-olds John Peña, Alex Miranda, and Leo Rodriguez, Whiz Socks works with local street artists and muralists, such as Yoyo Ferro, to design one-of-a-kind socks that are not only stylish but add value to society. Based on a business model similar to that of TOMS shoe company, when one pair of Whiz Socks is purchased, a pair is given to a homeless Atlantan. The affordable footwear features bold colors, fun patterns, and catchy slogans like, “I make a difference” and “Good vibes only.” Since launching in August 2018, 338 pairs of socks have been donated. The brand’s ambitious creators hope to donate 5,000 pairs monthly in 2019. Details: WhizSocks.com

my best self Lyn Ross
Aesthetics guru Lyn Ross of Institut’ DERMed Clinical Skin Care turned her pain into purpose and is now changing the way pros and clients approach skin rejuvenation. By India Powell As a teenager who struggled with severe acne, Lyn Ross prayed that the days of popping pimples would come to an end. Now, decades later, people look to her as a leader in the aesthetics and clinical skin care industry. At 66, her deep-rooted devotion to helping others with their skin and body care needs has led to the creation of her own science-based line of products and the establishment of the College of Advanced Aesthetics.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment in the field of aesthetics? The Institut’ DERMed College of Advanced Aesthetics that I founded in 1994. Our Intensive MediClinical Spa courses are highly coveted certifications that set the standard for licensed estheticians desiring to work with problem skin conditions. The course modules focus on ingredient knowledge and how they work at the cellular level for acne correction, antiaging, evening the skin tone, and comforting sensitive skin types.
What makes Institut’ DERMed different and what new things are on the horizon there? As a licensed master esthetician and working one-on-one in the treatment room with clients since I was 24, I am able to teach other aestheticians how to tune into the skin’s psyche and know what treatments to perform for optimal results. The most exciting thing we have going on with our product line right now is working with our in-house chemists who research the latest in peptides and develop new formulations, combining peptides and plant stem cells to postpone aging, creating thicker collagen bundles and adding volume and lift to the skin.

What do you like to do for fun? I love to travel! In October 2018, I spent two weeks in Tuscany. I then went to California to attend the Living a Life of Presence conference with Eckhart Tolle and others. I follow several spiritual gurus and am very drawn toward helping others connect with the spiritual part of their being. How do you stay fit and healthy? I’m very careful about what I eat most of the time, taking in plenty of water, vegetables, and fiber to detoxify the body. I realize that good nutrition and good skin go together because what you put in your body will be reflected outwardly in your skin. I also do a combination of Pilates and cardio (my favorite is the elliptical), alternating every other day, along with yoga. What charity do you and Insitut’ DERMed support? Each February, I recruit 25 makeup artists to support teens going to prom. The professionals provide makeup that enhances the dresses given to the high schoolers through an event called Prom-A-Palooza created by Rachel Ewald and the Foster Care Support Foundation. It’s hard work but so rewarding when you see the transformations and how happy the girls look and feel for their big night.
Who helps you be your “Best Self” and why? Atlanta personal development coach Jan Smith, who founded the Center for Authentic Leadership. I’ve worked with her for 27 years and I thank God for her every day because of how I’m able to connect, communicate and move people to reach higher levels of their potential.
