from the publisher What Makes Me Happy I attended a book signing a few months ago for the book, Happiness Delivered by Tony Hsieh and as I was standing in line waiting for Mr. Hsieh’s autograph, an assistant came up to me and put a sticky note inside the front cover of my book. The note said,“Write down something weird that makes you happy.” I was dumbstruck, and nothing immediately came to mind. Finally, I settled on comfy pajama pants, because, silly as it sounds, they do make me smile. Once I got to the front of the line, the author took my book and drew a primitive picture of pj’s and signed the book. What I took away from that is sometimes the smallest things or actions can lift your spirits. I find I experience much bigger, happier moments when I feel a strong sense of accomplishment. It could be something as major as working through a stressful parenting issue (teenagers present those from time to time) or something like losing five pounds, although, I haven’t had one of those moments in a while. As we celebrate the second anniversary issue of Best Self, I am so proud to be part of such an amazing team of people. We have accomplished so many great things in such a short amount of time. We have distributed over a million magazines, launched a content-rich local resource website that has over 2000 pages of articles and partnered with hundreds of community events. All of this in keeping with our mission to inspire our readers to be the best they can be. Hopefully, we have made that path a little easier for some of you by providing the expert resources to help you in your journey. Our newest creation, Expert Connect, features articles by the many amazing local experts. You can connect with hundreds of these informed professionals on many different topics on our website, www.bestselfconnect.com. All the best

My Best List Save My Face Pillow - I love this pillow...it was a gift from my best friend from Houston, Rose Ann. It features a unique double crescent-shaped design that helps prevent wrinkling and improves nasal air flow that permits increased oxygenation of the body and eases aches and pains. It also provides proper support for the neck, shoulders, and back. I love it because when I use it with my other bed pillows it is very comfy. Ranges from $20-$80. Available at About Face Skin Care,www.aboutfaceskin.com or www.savemyface.com Twilights LED Camp Lights - I bought these to put on my golf cart or string over a table when eating outside this summer. No extension cords and nightmares of Christmas lights...no fuss and they twinkle like the stars. You can also use them to illuminate your hammock, tent, campsite and more. Twilights have 15 bright LEDs powered by two AA batteries that combine fun and function to your campsite and can operate for over two weeks of continuous use. I bought mine at High Country Outfitters on Roswell Road. $20 (404) 814-0999 www.highcountryoutfitters.com

Mary Kay Extra Emollient Cleansing Cream - OK...my best friend in Atlanta, Verdery, gave this to me...I love my girlfriends! It is really a facial cleanser but she uses it to remove eye makeup. She said it is the only eye make up remover she has found that she can use without bothering her eye contacts. It cleanses thoroughly and gently, lubricating the skin as it dissolves makeup and facial impurities. Suitable for sensitive skin. Clinically tested for skin irritancy and allergy. Non-comedogenic. $13 at marykay.com

You have choices for your cosmetic dental work. Choose wisely. Hi, I’m Dr. Debra King and for more than 20 years I have devoted my entire practice to cosmetic dentistry and helping people achieve the smile that they’ve always wanted. Whether at a school function with my kids or out in the community, I am constantly meeting people who tell me they are unhappy with their smile but haven’t addressed it because they are intimidated by cosmetic dentistry. Many are surprised to hear that while I do work with celebrity clients, I also craft custom smiles everyday for fellow parents, professionals and neighbors. The Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry offers a wide range of smile solutions, many with immediate results. If there is something that you have always wanted to change about your smile, this is the time to do it. I would like to personally meet with you and discuss how you can have the smile you have always wanted. You deserve it!

from the editor Your Biggest Fan Whether you’re rethinking your career, refocusing on getting back into shape or trying out new adventures, for many of us, one person was always there to cheer you on: Mom. We celebrate the Moms of Atlanta this month, not only by showing them a small token of our affection and gratitude (check out our unique gift ideas on pg. 32) but also by highlighting a special Atlanta mom and best-selling author, Emily Giffin. Not only is she a hard-working mother of three, but she also proves that a successful career does not have to take a back seat when it comes to raising a family. This month, Giffin’s book Something Borrowed hits the big screen and stars hot Hollywood mama, Kate Hudson. Speaking of hot mamas, Sherri Adair has been hard at work raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association by learning all the right moves that are sure to look amazing on the dance floor when she takes part in Dancing Stars of Atlanta in June. If you haven’t already, you can start following her journey on our Facebook page. We are also so excited to welcome Jessica Dauler of Jessica Shops fame as she weighs in on our Best Finds section each month. bestbites Healthy and tasty ideas to nourish your body Incredible Edible Eggplant As a member of the nightshade family, the eggplant is closely related to the tomato and potato but with its regal hue and unique taste, this veggie definitely stands out on its own. Eggplant is a source of folic acid and potassium as well as the center piece of this traditionally southern Italian dish. Serve it up at home with the family or as the main course at a dinner party – either way it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser.
Eggplant Parmesan
Ingredients: 1 large eggplant 4 egg whites Fat-free Parmesan cheese 4 tablespoons of water Garlic powder to taste 1 cup low-carb marinara sauce Method: Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees. Peel eggplant and cut into ¼ inch slices. In a shallow dish, beat egg whites and 4 tablespoons of water until foamy. Dip eggplant slices into egg whites, then into fat-free Parmesan cheese, pressing cheese into eggplant. Place eggplant on prepared baking sheet that has been sprayed with vegetable spray and sprinkle with garlic powder. Spray vegetable cooking spray over eggplant slices. Bake 30 minutes at 400 degrees, turning eggplant over after 20 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through. Cover with 1 cup of low-carb marinara sauce. Bake 20 minutes, or until eggplant is hot and sauce is bubbling.
Super Fruit
Serves: Two large servings
A Private Table The Lychee berry has a long history of cultivation, going back as far as 2000 BC according to records in China. Known for its high Vitamin C count (a total 72 mg of Vitamin C per 100 grams of fruit), as well as other minerals, Lychee is also being used in this new weight loss supplement. According to Bainbridge & Knight, The Lichi Super Fruit Diet works to boost the body’s metabolic rate, oxidize fat and assist in healthy digestion. Details: Your local GNC, www.LichiSuperFruit.com
Whether you are planning an intimate dinner or a feast for up to 10 friends, sometimes you want to dine away from the crowd. That’s where eleven’s private dining room comes in. So, when my friend suggested we give indoor rock climbing a try and told me that the largest indoor rock climbing gym was here in Atlanta, I was in! When you first enter the vertical world of Stone Summit Climbing & Fitness Center, it’s pretty amazing, not to mention intimidating for a first-timer. This place is huge and has walls extending 25 to 60 feet high. After checking in at the desk and signing a waiver, I took a look around. It turns out they offer two different kinds of climbing. There is traditional rock climbing that involves ropes, harnesses, figure eight knots, caribeeners, and other things I don’t know the name of. To participate on the rock climbing wall, you need to have a partner and to know what you are doing. If you are a newbie like me, that means taking a class on belaying technique and passing a belaying test. It turns out you need to sign up for these classes about a week in advance, so the main rock wall was out for me this day. The other kind of rock climbing is called bouldering. This involves climbing boulder sized objects, about 15 feet tall. No ropes, no belaying, just grab on the wall and go. One fellow boulderer told me that bouldering is for rock climbers with short attention spans. There are thick padded mats to jump or fall down on. Routes are marked with colored tape and markings indicating difficulty. Over the course of two hours of bouldering I discovered two very important things. First, it’s a lot of fun and second, it’s a lot harder than it looks. All in all, indoor rock climbing is a fun, albeit exhausting way to spend a couple of hours. If you’re looking for an interesting, non-traditional work-out this is the place to go! Details: 3701 Presidential Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30340, (678) 720-9882, www.ssclimbing.com

Q
My friend recently had a hip resurfacing procedure. What is the main difference between a hip resurfacing and a total hip replacement?
Hip replacement and hip resurfacing are both surgical treatments for advanced arthritis of the hip joint. Hip resurfacing is primarily targeted for patients less than 60. This procedure involves capping the native femoral head (ball) with a metal cap, and placing a new cup in the acetabulum (socket). Hip replacement is typically targeted towards older patients and involves removing the entire femoral head and placing a new metal stem down the femur. A similar cup component is used for the socket. Thus, less of your bone is removed with resurfacing.

Can you explain what the condition of “frozen shoulder” is?
Adhesive capsulitis, also known as “frozen shoulder,” causes reduced range of motion with pain. In early stages,“frozen shoulder” is accompanied by severe pain. The treatment for this condition in its early stages is very important since this condition can lead to chronic discomfort of the shoulder joint if not treated properly. Exercise therapy, cortisone injections, suprascapular nerve block and manipulation are some of the possible treatment methods for “frozen shoulder.”
What is HPV, and how do I protect myself from getting it?
HPV is a common virus. There are many different types of the virus. Some strains can develop into cervical cancer, pre-cancerous lesions or genital warts. Gardasil is a vaccine that protects against certain high-risk types of HPV, reducing the risk of cervical cancer by 70 percent, and genital warts by 90 percent. Gardasil is given in three doses. Girls and women 9 - 26 years of age can receive Gardasil. The vaccination does not substitute routine cervical-cancer screening, and works best when administered before contact with certain types of HPV.

What are uterine fibroids, and what are my options?
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths within the muscle wall of the uterus. They can cause heavy periods, pelvic pain, and infertility. Fibroids can be treated surgically with hysterectomy or myomectomy. Medical treatments to shrink fibroids can also be used for a limited time. Radiologic procedures can reduce blood flow to fibroids or destroy fibroid tissue with high-frequency ultrasound waves. Fibroids can regrow following treatment and some therapies are not recommended for women who want to get pregnant in the future.

Are tanning beds better for you than the sun in terms of avoiding skin cancer?
Tanning beds produce 10 to 15 times the amount of UVA rays as the sun and have been labeled as “carcinogenic to humans” by the World Health Organization. Fair-skinned individuals under the age of 30 are most susceptible to UVA rays. If you want to look tan for that prom or wedding photo, consider a spray or lotion. These products provide a similar temporary benefit without the permanent side effects.

bestcause The National Kidney Foundation Bringing more awareness to Chronic Kidney Disease By Sarah E. King When was the last time you gave thought to your health, or for that matter gave thought to your kidney health? In the United States alone, more than 26 million Americans – that’s one in eight adults – battle chronic kidney disease (CKD), with 20 million more at an increased risk of obtaining CKD. This silent and often symptomless disease can sneak up on an individual, and high risk groups include those with diabetes, hypertension or those with a family history of kidney disease. As kidney disease develops, those afflicted may experience complications like high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones and nerve damage. Kidney disease also increases risk of heart and blood vessel disease. However, there is an organization out there looking to take CKD head on: the National Kidney Foundation. This voluntary health organization, with regional offices across the country, seeks to prevent kidney and urinary disease, as well as promote free screenings, provide patient education, promote organ donation, raise funds and awareness for CKD, and more. Cara McKinney, Director of Development for the National Kidney Foundation serving Georgia and Alabama, says she is a staunch supporter of the Kidney Early Evaluation Program, or KEEP Program, which recently screened its 100,000th participant. “Many people do not know they have a kidney disease, while one in seven adults in Georgia has kidney disease. Our goal is to screen through the KEEP Program to prevent or postpone individuals having to go on dialysis,” McKinney says. “With the foundation, we can help change the diet. Individuals can meet with a physician at the screening and go over basic results. A social worker takes the time to call to go over results, and will follow up a year later to make sure they go to the doctor. We don’t want to just screen, we want to make sure a person does not go on dialysis. We want them to be supported.” McKinney also notes the foundation’s growing emphasis on living donation and organ donation as a way to improve the quality of life for those with CKD. “I believe in organ donation. I believe it’s a gift of life, and the more donors we have, the more people can live a full, functional life.” Board member Jim Rathburn of Alpharetta, who was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease in his late 30s, avoided dialysis and received a kidney transplant from his sister in 2008. Rathburn, who joined the board right before his kidney transplant, says one of the reasons he became a member was to “do what I could to give back to make sure others experience what I did.” “Personally, I have been passionate about trying to communicate to spread the word and receive support for donations. I would like to see awareness get to a tipping point where people are apt to donate,” Rathburn says. “And not only donate, but more importantly, to become living donors. We’re starting to see more and more stories of that. People donating to strangers, people donating to ones they love. These are really impressive stories of human kindness.” Fundraisers for the National Kidney Foundation, such as the Kidney Walk, the NKF Cadillac Golf Classic tournament, and various other events across the nation, help to support health fairs, the KEEP Program, Camp Independence, a non-profit camp for children diagnosed with kidney disease or a solid organ transplant, and the Donor Recognition program, as well as many others. For more information, visit www.kidney.org, or to find local events, visit www.kidneyga.org.

Tired of Dieting Alone?
Saving A Life An organ donor’s decision By Sarah E. King

Donna Burchfield and Brittany Reed The gift of life came from an unlikely source for Donna Burchfield, who was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease in 1998. Color technician Brittany Reed first heard of Burchfield’s need for a kidney transplant in November 2009, as Reed was applying Burchfield’s hair color at Buckhead’s Carter Barnes hair salon. Reed, compelled by the need to help, discreetly tested at Piedmont Hospital for months before she was able to break the joyous news of her candidacy as a donor for Burchfield.
The difference between success and failure is the combination of effort, accountability and support. You put in the effort; I’ll provide the accountability and support.
What went through your mind as you began testing to see if you were a match for Donna? After I first heard about Donna’s situation, I decided not to do anything until after the holidays. I had this compelling desire to help her, but wanted to make sure I thought my decision through. I am the type of woman that has to see every decision I make all the way through. Once I went through the second section of testing, I knew that if everything came back as a match, I would, without a doubt, do what I could to help Donna.
Why did you decide to ultimately become a donor? I decided because everything in me told me that it was the right thing to do. I can’t really put into words why or how I decided. I just put my decision in God’s hands. I knew that if it was meant to be, if I was the lucky person, then I would do it and never think twice.
What were your initial feelings when you decided to break the news to Donna? I was filled with all kinds of emotion. I was excited, and scared, nervous and calm. I remember just thinking that my life will change from this moment forward and it has. I knew by donating to Donna that it would be a wonderful gift to her, but I had no idea that it would be such an amazing gift to me as well.
Why do you feel others should consider the same choice you made?

This isn’t the right choice for everyone, but I do think if more people did a little more research, they would realize it isn’t as scary as most would think. There is no doubt that this is a major surgery, but you are not just saving a person, but an entire family and there is nothing more amazing than that.
Why is organ donation important to you? Organ failure can happen to anyone. I realized that life is so precious and we can only rely on each day we have.

the incredible journey of emily giffin From the written page to the silver screen: the making of a best-selling author By Jeyme Colodne
When Emily Giffin first laid her fingers on a keyboard, there was no telling where it would lead her. But a change in direction can sometimes be the best thing to happen to a person. Whether it’s a change in career, a move to a new place or a chance meeting with the right person – things are set in motion and all you can do is go along for the ride. Giffin went from spending countless hours a week working in the litigation department of New York law firm, Winston & Strawn to writing several bestselling novels. Her road from law to literature was filled with ups and downs, but she says she wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Although she selected a career in law at first, Giffin never gave up on her writing and continued to pen stories in her spare time. “I’m not sure exactly what happened during college, as I never lost my desire to become a writer. But looking back, I think I had the sense that I had to get a “real” job first,” recalls Giffin on her decision to go to law school. Giffin admits that although she enjoyed law school, she did not in fact “enjoy the actual practice of law or the big firm culture.” Motivated by her unhappiness as well as her love for the written word, she eventually gave up her legal career and began pursuing a job as a full-time writer. “I had pretty much nothing but concerns (and a lot of hope); that’s part of what made it so exciting,” Giffin explains about her initial choice to switch careers. “It was the first major risk I ever took and the best thing I ever did. As Mark Twain says in my all-time favorite quote, ‘Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.’”
Five novels, one husband and three children later, Giffin is still writing and still enjoying every minute of it. On May 6, Something Borrowed will hit the big screen in the film adaptation of the same name starring Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin. When asked what the biggest surprise has been on this journey from unpublished writer to best-selling author, Giffin responds, “How incredible it is to have characters I created in my head mean so much to people I’ve never even met.”
However, the dream was a bit further away than she first realized. After finishing her first novel, it was promptly rejected by several publishers. Undaunted, Giffin decided to pack up and move to London and began writing what would later be her first best-seller, Something Borrowed. “I hate to lose and I love to write,” says Giffin. It was that passion that kept her going and eventually all her determination paid off. In 2004, Something Borrowed hit the New York Times bestseller list, an accomplishment that came as quite a shock. “I was feeding my fivemonth old twin sons, two bottles in hand,” says Giffin of the moment she heard she had made the list, “I was sure I hadn’t heard my editor correctly and was embarrassed. What followed was a moment of pure joy and gratitude.” The jury is definitely in on Giffin’s books. Her stories have been dubbed by critics as “instantly relatable” and “fun and thought-provoking,” while Giffin herself has been compared by critics to “a modern day Jane Austen” and called a “masterful storyteller.” Her fans couldn’t agree more. Giffin shows no sign of slowing down and says she will continue to write about the themes that her readers have come to know and love. “I will always write about love and relationships,” says Giffin, “To me, that’s what is important in life.” www.bestselfconnect.com

What you may not know about Emily Giffin How do you balance your time? Not sure how balanced it is, more of a controlled chaos.
What is the best piece of advice you could offer a working mom who is juggling a burgeoning career and a family? Don’t sweat the small stuff and learn to delegate.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? “Follow your heart” or more to the point, “If you hate it so much, quit!”
What inspired your latest novel Heart of the Matter? I was at a charity function for a local hospital I support, listening to a young mother talk of her newborn’s facial deformity. She spoke so passionately and poignantly of her experience, particularly of the surgeon who first came to talk to her and her husband when their child was just a few hours old. She described the confidence he instilled in her, and how he was the first person to tell her that her son was beautiful. The story was so moving that I came to imagine the attachment one must feel to a doctor who is saving your child. This became the genesis for Valerie’s story. From there, the novel grew organically, in a very character and relationship driven way that my books always develop.
Of all your books to date, which one is closest to your heart? Something Blue, perhaps because I was writing it when I was pregnant with my twin sons. It was a very emotional, special time in my life. I think it’s also because Ethan and Darcy are my two favorite characters.
You’ve lived in many different places, why did you make the decision to come to Atlanta? Initially, it was because of my husband’s career, but I’ve grown to love it, mainly because of the people.
How has becoming a mother changed your outlook on success and life in general? I want my children to always be true to their hearts and dreams. I know that sounds really idealistic and cheesy, but it’s true. I would far rather they be happy doing something they love than chasing the next accomplishment. Wanting this for them has given me a sense of balance, too. There is so much more to life than the brass ring.
What makes Parc Communities so different from other retirement living options? It’s Parc’s people! While Parc Communities is certainly proud of its beautiful communities, fully-appointed apartment homes and fine dining, it is the people that distinguish Parc from other communities.
What are the benefits of living at Parc Communities? U Friends and neighbors U Stimulating intellectual pursuits U Exciting social activities U Improved wellness, less worry U Beautiful surroundings U Fantastic food U More independence U Higher quality of life U Comfort and security U Laughter and fun
Where will you be watching the first screening of Something Borrowed? I’ve already seen the movie with the cast, and of course will attend the worldwide premiere in LA, but I look forward to watching it in a real audience on May 6 somewhere in Atlanta. Probably more than once!
What book are you currently reading? I See You Everywhere by Julia Glass. I love it so far. I’m also rereading Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout, one of my literary heroes who I just had the good fortune of meeting at a literary conference.
What are you most looking forward to doing after you’ve finished doing press for the movie? Spending time with my three children and finishing my sixth novel. It’s called Where We Belong and it’s about the power of a secret and what happens when it finally comes to light.

High Blood Pressure and Stroke: PREVENTION IS POSSIBLE By Alison Broderick
W
ith almost five million people suffering from some form of stroke each
year, according to the American Heart Association, 70% can be linked to existing high blood pressure. This makes high blood pressure one of the most important controllable stroke risk factors out there. So, it’s no wonder that May is both High Blood Pressure Education Month and National Stroke Awareness Month. Raising awareness is key to prevention and to early treatment.
High Blood Pressure: It Could Happen to You As a child, you may have overheard your grandparents complaining of high blood pressure (HBP), but never thought it could happen to you. That is, until you got older. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a staggering 74.5 million people in the United States suffer from high blood pressure. In other words, one out of three Americans aged 20 or older have HBP. High blood pressure is the gateway to more serious conditions like stroke, heart disease and kidney failure. One of the best ways to observe High Blood Pressure Education Month is to go out and educate yourself and those you love about this ever-increasing problem. From basic facts, to prevention methods, to expert advice, it’s vital to learn all you can about the ways to keep your blood pressure under control and maintain an overall healthier lifestyle. Even if your blood pressure falls in the normal range, it is important to take preventive measures.

Also known as hypertension, high blood pressure is a cardiovascular disease in which the blood vessels become tight and restricted. “Elevated force pushes on the artery wall as blood flows throughout the body,” explains Kimberly Champney, MD, a cardiologist at Northside Hospital. “The raised pressure requires the heart to work harder to pump the blood throughout the body.” According to Scott McKee, MD, FACC, a cardiologist with WellStar Cardiovascular Medicine, “High blood pressure creates stress on the blood vessels, leading to a rapid build-up of fat and cholesterol. Elevated blood pressure is the underlying cause of heart attack and stroke, but the high blood pressure itself often has no symptoms.” In addition to making lifestyle changes, McKee suggests taking appropriate medication(s) to move HBP into the normal range. Prehypertension occurs when the blood pressure is higher than the normal range, yet not high enough to be considered hypertension. In this case, it is crucial to take preventive action and adopt a healthier way of life. Otherwise, you are at a greater risk for developing high blood pressure in the future.
Understanding Blood Pressure Readings There are two types of blood pressure readings: systolic and diastolic. The systolic number is measured when your heart contracts and sends a surge of pressure to keep the blood moving; the diastolic number is measured in between contractions, when the heart rests between beats. The systolic reading is taken when your blood pressure is at its highest point, and the diastolic reading is taken at its lowest.
Normal Blood Pressure Prehypertension Hypertension
Systolic: Less than 120 mmHG Diastolic: Less than 80 mmHG
Systolic: 120-139 mmHG Diastolic: 80-89 mmHG
Systolic: 140 mmHG or more Diastolic: 90 mmHG or more
Who’s At Risk? High blood pressure can affect anyone, although certain traits, conditions and behaviors are known to increase a person’s risk. “Blood pressure tends to rise as a person ages. If you're a male older than 45 or a female above age 55, you are at a greater risk for developing high blood pressure,” says Kenneth Brigham, MD, director of the Center for Health Discovery and Well Being, a partnership between Emory University and the Georgia Institute of Technology. “However, it is more common in African-American adults than in Caucasian or Hispanic-American adults,” he says. Aside from advanced age, other risk factors for HBP include: • Family history of high blood pressure, especially in a parent • Lack of physical activity • Gender (HBP is more common in males) • Poor diet (especially a diet high in sodium) • Overweight/obese (nearly two out of three adults are overweight or obese, and almost one out of three children between the ages of 2 and 19 are considered overweight) • Excessive alcohol intake (more than one drink/day for women; more than two drinks/day for men) • Smoking • Sleep apnea • Stress • High blood cholesterol levels

“Individuals can prevent and control high blood pressure by getting regular exercise, quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting sodium intake and knowing their family medical history,” notes Amy Perez, RN, MSN, CNRN, the stroke program manager at Piedmont Hospital. “If a person is diagnosed with high blood pressure, he or she should work closely with a doctor to continue monitoring the blood pressure over time, and follow instructions regarding blood pressure medication,” she adds.
Learning About Stroke According to the American Stroke Association (ASA), stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer. The underlying risk factors for stroke are hypertension, atrial fibrillation and diabetes. “High blood pressure has been called the ‘silent killer’ because it usually has no symptoms until damage to arteries is already advanced. Hypertension eventually causes an occlusion of the blood vessel or trapping of blood clots. Loss of blood flow due to an occlusion in the brain’s arteries can result in stroke,” says Michael Frankel, MD, a professor of vascular neurology at Emory University and director of the Marcus Stroke & Neuroscience Center at Grady Memorial Hospital.
Types of Stroke While there are several types of stroke, ischemic and hemorrhagic are the most common. “Ischemic stroke occurs when an artery in the brain is blocked. The blockage deprives the brain of blood flow and causes permanent injury, known as a stroke,” says Frankel. Ischemic stroke accounts for approximately 87 percent of stroke cases. “Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel ruptures in or near the brain, causing bleeding in the deep tissue. Chronic HBP or aging blood vessels are the main causes of this type of stroke,” Brigham says. A hemorrhagic stroke is typically caused by two types of weakened blood vessels: aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Often referred to as a ‘mini-stroke’ or ‘warning stroke,’ a transient ischemic attack (TIA) should be taken seriously. The usual TIA symptoms are the same as those of stroke, only temporary. Almost one out of three people who endure this type of stroke eventually suffer from a full-blown stroke. A TIA causes temporary blockage of a blood vessel that provides the brain with oxygen and blood. Different from a stroke, a TIA has no lasting brain damage and generally lasts five minutes or less.
Warning Signs of Stroke Most Americans are unable to identify the warning signs of stroke, but recognition can mean the difference between life and death. “The signs of stroke are more difficult to recognize than a heart attack, as the brain is more complicated than the heart,” says Keith A. Sanders, MD, a board certified vascular neurologist and medical director of the Primary Stroke Center at Saint Joseph's Hospital. As soon as you experience any stroke symptoms, call 9-1-1. Also, note the time when you encounter the first symptom. While there are warning signs of stroke, there is very little lead time, so you need to act fast. “It is very important for people who are having stroke symptoms to get to a hospital as quickly as possible,” explains Sunil Bhole, MD, Medical Director for Glancy Rehabilitation Center. “If the stroke is caused by a blood clot, a clot-busting drug may be given to dissolve the clot. Most of the time, patients must reach a hospital within three hours after symptoms begin. Some people may be able to receive these drugs for up to four or five hours after symptoms begin.” Here are a few of the warnings signs: • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause To determine if a person is experiencing a stroke, remember the first three letters of stroke: www.bestselfconnect.com

The Use of Aspirin As stroke often results from the arteries becoming blocked and unable to send blood to parts of the brain and heart, often an anti-inflammatory drug such as aspirin is recommended as a stroke preventative. Aspirin has been seen to prevent these blockages by reducing the production of a chemical called thromboxane, which promotes clotting. It is important to find the correct balance in the dosage of aspirin and in 2009, the United States Preventative Services Task Force offered new guidelines. These recommendations were published in the March 17, 2009 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine, which outlined the risk factors for individuals. Since the risk varies per individual, it is important to consult with a physician before taking aspirin. “Baby aspirin has been shown to be beneficial in primary prevention of heart attack,” explains Edward A Espinosa, MD of Buckhead Concierge Internal Medicine. “The jury is still out on the benefits of aspirin in primary prevention of stroke. Aspirin has been shown to be beneficial in secondary prevention of stroke.” (Primary prevention: Never had a stroke and want to prevent a stroke from ever happening. Secondary prevention: Had a stroke in the past and want to prevent another stroke.) Risk factors to consider before deciding to use aspirin to prevent stroke include: • Age • Sex • Diabetes • Blood pressure • Cholesterol levels • Smoking • Risk of gastrointestinal bleeding • Risk of bleed in the brain BEST SELF ATLANTA

Post-Stroke Rehabilitation: The Road to Recovery Stroke is not only the third leading cause of death in the United States, but also the leading cause of long-term disabilities and can affect anyone, at any age. While it occurs in the brain, stroke can affect the whole body. Common disabilities include paralysis or weakness on one side of the body, impaired thinking, attention, learning, awareness, memory and judgment and difficulty comprehending speech or constructing sentences. The good news is there are amazing medical care centers here in Atlanta that are leading the way to help people recover. Among them is the Atlanta Medical Center (AMC), which was recently the 2011 recipient of the Georgia Coverdell Champion Hospital of the Year Award from the Georgia Coverdell Stroke Registry. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to bettering stroke care across the state by sharing information and best practices with other Georgia hospitals. Additionally, Grady Hospital is the first public hospital in the U.S. to be certified as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Their new Marcus Stroke & Neuroscience Center not only provides treatment for stroke patients, but also provides continuing research and training for neurologists of the future. The center is open and available to all who need stroke care, whether they are insured or not. The state-of-the-art center is Georgia’s first Neurocritical Care Unit with a neuroangiography suite and MAY 2011

dedicated CT scanner, which helps minimize the transport time from a patient’s intensive care unit bed and back. Post-stroke rehabilitation centers, such as the Glancy Rehabilitation Center, help individuals overcome disabilities caused by stroke. Services often include medical management, neuropsychological aid, physical and occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology. Glancy Rehabilitation Center also offers stroke support groups, education classes and a Stroke Peer Visitor Program, in which trained stroke survivors and caregivers visit with patients and family members to offer their support and hope.
Research: Knowledge is Power Exciting new developments have been made in stroke research and treatment. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) is currently conducting research on the mechanisms of stroke risk factors and the process of brain damage that results from stroke. It is through continuous research that scientists are working to develop improved methods of helping the brain restore itself after suffering a stroke. “Recognize the risk factors for stroke, and take steps to reduce those risk factors,” advises James H. Hipkens, MD, PhD, FACP with Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. “Exercise, maintain a healthy weight and if you smoke, quit. Make an appointment with your doctor for a complete physical exam, including blood work. Have your vitals measured and ask your physician to check for signs of heart and vascular disease. Then, schedule a time to have your physician review the results of your exam and lab work with you.”

about high blood pressure and its threats,” says Brigham. Americans are becoming more proactive in lowering their blood pressure and thus, reducing their risk of stroke. Below are just a few of the advancements that have been made to improve the overall health of Americans. • The National Salt Reduction Initiative is a public and private partnership that is aimed at reducing Americans’ salt intake in packaged and restaurant foods by 20 percent over five years. • New USDA dietary guidelines and the new USDA Food Pyramid call for reduced sodium, fat and sugars in the American diet. “The new dietary guideline recommends 1,500 milligrams (about 1/2 teaspoon) of salt per day for people over the age of 51, African Americans and individuals with diabetes, HTN or kidney disease. This encompasses about 50 percent of the population,” Champney says.

TMJ-Jaw Pain, Popping & Clicking? Does your jaw “lock up”, click or cause you pain when opened or closed or when you chew, do you have headaches that can’t seem to be diagnosed? The problem could be the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ is formed by two bones, the skull’s temporal bone and the mandible, or jawbone. These two bones, two on each side, form the hinge-like joint called TMJ. It is the physical connection where the jaw meets the skull. The joint can become slightly out of place and cause multiple problems. Besides those mentioned above, other common symptoms can be pain when chewing, shoulder and neck stiffness, earaches, dizziness and unexplained headaches.

Often this is because TMJ dysfunction can place neurological strain on your body. Typically in TMJ syndrome the lower jaw (mandible) is extended forward. A head forward posture exaggerates the problem. This forward mandible aggravates the cervical ligament laxity, which increases the neck pain. Again an endless cycle of pain and disability is created in the neck, head, and face region. Eventually the mandible moves forward to the extent that it will stretch the lateral TMJ ligament and produce pain. Once the lateral TMJ ligament becomes lax the joint will click. It is important to note that clicking in any joint is an indication of ligament laxity of that joint. Joint clicking is never a normal or good sign. Joint clicking, whether it is in the TMJ, knee, neck, or lower back is almost always abnormal. The body’s compensatory mechanism for such a situation is to tighten muscles and to grow more bone. The end result will be degeneration, arthritis, and stiffness in that joint. A combination of Prolotherapy injections to strengthen both the cervical vertebrae and the temporomandibular (TMJ) joint combined with manipulations of the affected areas to realign the joints will often solve this problem. The Skinny on CoolSculpting® Q: Who is an ideal candidate for CoolSculpting? An ideal candidate is within 10 to 15 pounds of their desired weight, but has a problem area that won’t go away with diet and exercise.
Q: What are the benefits of CoolSculpting by Zeltiq? Unlike other fat removal procedures, this is non-invasive, so patients can reduce fat from their problem areas without the risks associated with surgical procedures. There is no anesthesia, no needles, and no downtime, so patients can return to their normal activities immediately.
Q: How is the procedure done? We attach a non-invasive suction applicator, similar to a vacuum, to the indicated area. This applicator draws the adipose tissue and breaks down the fat cells by extracting heat, cooling the tissue, and killing these fat cells. Over the next two to four months, the body gradually eliminates these fat cells, which reduces the thickness of the fat layer.
After
Q: Is CoolSculpting painful? The first five minutes of the procedure can be a little uncomfortable, but not unbearable. We have yet to see a patient feel too uncomfortable.
Q: How quickly do people see results? Many patients see results within three to four weeks. Most patients see about 70 percent of their results within six to eight weeks, and 100 percent of their results within four to five months.
Q: Is there any maintenance or follow-up with CoolSculpting? The results are expected to last as long as the results our patients would get from liposuction. To achieve even more reduction in fat, patients may have another treatment in the same area two to four months after their initial treatment.
Q: What should people look for in a doctor who offers CoolSculpting? Find out if the doctor is a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon. If it is not the doctor who performs the procedure, ask who will be doing it, make sure they are licensed and certified, and ask if the doctor is onsite while the procedure is being performed. Make sure you fill out a consent form, and that they ask you questions about your health, your medications, and any other medical history.

SAFETY TIPS for Little League Season
With baseball season upon us, little league season is in full-swing at the ball parks. Since this type of sport requires repetitive throwing motions by all positions, it can often put strain on the elbow. A common injury in young athletes during this season is Little League Elbow, which is an injury to the growth plate. The growth plate in the elbow is vulnerable to injury because it is made up of growth cartilage, a relatively soft substance that is not as strong as bone, muscle or tendons. If recognized early and treated properly, Little League Elbow usually heals completely with no long-term effects to the growth plate. David Marshall, MD, Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Program at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, offers these tips to parents who want to safeguard their children from potential baseball injuries this spring. There is no way to guarantee that a young thrower will not develop Little League Elbow, but there are some measures that can be taken to minimize the risk such as: • Always warm up before throwing. • Have a coach or parent count pitches. • Remember to count hard throws when not pitching (playing infield, throwing at home, pitching lessons, PE class, etc). • The recommendations for the number of pitches that one should throw in one game to prevent injuries is different for each age group: 8 – 10 years old: 50 – 60 pitches 11 – 12 years old: 65 – 70 12 – 14 years old: 70 – 80 14+ years old: 80 –85 pitches • If the elbow feels sore, ice should be applied for 15 to 20 minutes, and it can be wrapped with an ace bandage or a compression sleeve. Athletes also should see their doctor, since x-rays may be needed to determine the extent of the injury to the growth plate. • Remember, these are only recommendations. Young athletes should stop
throwing if they start feeling elbow pain or think they have Little League Elbow. • No curve balls or other breaking pitches until age 14, or the pitcher is shaving because young pitchers’ hands are too small for proper finger placement. • The most common symptom of Little League elbow is pain at the inner elbow that worsens with throwing. It may be severe and occur abruptly after one hard throw, or it may occur gradually over the course of a season. There also may be swelling, redness, and warmth over the inner elbow. • To allow proper healing, the period of non-throwing may take four to six weeks. • Once healing is complete, there will be a gradual return to throwing, usually over a two to three week period. This is best accomplished under the direction of a pediatric sports medicine physical therapist. For more information on preventing and treating Little League injuries, visit www.choa.org/sportsmed. Atlanta Author and Master Esthetician Lyn Ross Shares Her Thoughts On Skin Care Master Esthetician and published author of “Your Guide to Beautiful Skin at Any Age”, Lyn Ross, founded Institut’ DERMed Spa 22 years ago with the goal of empowering clients with knowledge and proven treatment product systems for optimal skin health. So what is it that has propelled Institut’ DERMed into phenomenal success?
Q: Lyn, first things first: How did you become the skincare expert you are today? Lyn Ross: I often tell the story of how I became an esthetician at age 11 when I experienced my first acne break-out. As a teenager and well into my 20s, I have suffered from severe acne. This disease of the skin had also become a disease of self-esteem for me, as it often does for many people afflicted. I lacked self confidence because of my skin. It is for that precise reason that I went into skincare in the first place. I yearned to learn how to rid myself of this affliction and in the future, rid others of it too.
Q: Tell us about your medi-clinical spa in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta. LR: As a skincare professional, I know each individual’s skin health is unique and requires a personalized approach so we provide a variety of customized facials for our clientele. The skin is a magnificent, complex, and multi-purpose organ. In the last 10 years, more has been discovered about the way the skin functions than has been learned in the last two hundred years. We now see the direct relationship between skin product performance and skin physiology. Our signature treatment is the Rx Infusion Facial, this customized corrective treatment includes skin analysis, corrective cleansing, enzyme or acid peel, steam, deep pore extractions, high potency cosmeceutical infusion serum and mask application. Combine this treatment with a Microdermabrasion and you give the skin unparalled hydration, lifting and rejuvenation. We also offer comprehensive, technologically-advanced services such as IPL Photo Facial, Hydrafacial, Microcurrent, and total-body treatments including Medilift, Endermologie and massage.
Q: Talk a little about your product line. Why did you feel the need to create your own line? What makes it different? LR: When I was starting my business, I scouted the skincare product market far and wide, trying to find the right combination of ingredients to heal what was ailing my clients’ skin. That is how the Institut’ DERMed clinical skincare product line came into being. Our treatment options incorporate cosmeceutical ingredients that are safe and effective for purifying, lightening and nourishing the skin to radiant health.
Q: Lyn, can you please give some skincare tips to women who’re looking to preserve their youthful appearance? LR: I believe beauty starts on the inside. So drinking water and eating well is a must for everyone. I can’t stress enough the importance of wearing sunscreen every single day.

Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they
can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

FoodandFatigue Avoid foods that make you snooze
Fatigue is the most common complaint I hear in my medical practice. Patients generally relate their fatigue to the stresses of job, home, kids, relationships and finances. In a vicious cycle, fatigue leaves us with even less energy to put into our work, our families, exercise and having fun. Most patients are understandably seeking a “band-aid” or a quick fix, unaware that the underlying problem is most likely related to the way the body is being fueled. As a society, we simply have not grasped the reality that our food is our fuel and is intricately tied to how we feel, how our bodies respond and how sick we can get. We are depriving our bodies of the nutrients needed to give us energy and make us healthy. When I ask a patient what he or she eats, I often hear, “Oh, I eat healthy. I don’t eat sugar.” But when I dig deeper, this rarely proves to be true. While few people eat bacon, eggs and grits for breakfast anymore, here are the common morning staples: coffee with creamer; a banana; low-fat yogurt; a fruit smoothie; a muffin; cereal; a bagel; or oatmeal (the common choice of the “healthiest” folks). Here’s some hard truth: A banana has 15 grams of sugar; low-fat yogurt has about 35 grams; and a typical fruit smoothie has about 55 grams. We only need 30 grams of sugar per day! Meanwhile, most muffins are purely starch, processed flour and maybe a few fake blueberries. Today’s bagel has been super-sized to the point that it represents a full daily allowance of carbohydrates, creating a diabetes-inducing glucose and insulin spike. And the bad news for the oatmeal eaters is that studies have shown that those who eat cereal or instant oatmeal for breakfast consume up to 50% more calories through the course of the day than those who start with a protein-based meal.
“Oh, I eat healthy. I don’t eat sugar.” Now, if I told you there was a product that would cure fatigue, along with heart disease, diabetes and obesity, and would make people feel better and even prevent cancer, you would think I was selling snake oil. But the truth is that miracle product could be at the end of your fork in the form of a plant-based diet. Plant-based nutrition is easier on the kidneys, the blood pressure and the heart; it can resolve many inflammatory diseases, prevent diabetes and heart disease and help us lose weight. A plant-based diet sounds awful, you say? Of course it does right now; your food is currently your street drug -- much like alcohol, you crave it and it defines your fun. But the right food could be your life-giving medication, your fuel, the stuff that gives you energy, takes away your pain, staves off your hunger pains, helps you lose your gut and makes you want to exercise, be active and do fun things again. Transitioning to a plant-based diet isn’t easy; neither is coming off alcohol or any other drug. Your body may have some detox symptoms of withdrawal. Sugar and caffeine are strong drugs, but once you get them out of your system and add back in the good stuff, your body will lose those cravings, taste buds will recalibrate and you will see a remarkable change happening to your body. This will motivate you to continue to learn about good fuel to feel better. Over time, you won’t have to “white knuckle” it as much and you’ll develop the habits that work for you. End your fatigue permanently! Join us at the Jobri Center for a comprehensive week of learning, doing and detoxing in a supportive, medically-supervised setting. You’ll be amazed at how a change to your food system can bring your body and energy back to life. Kimball Johnson, MD

Hormone Replacement Therapy The Facts You Need To Know Q: At what age should a person consider hormone replacement therapy?
Q: What is a bio-identical hormone, and how is it different from a synthetic hormone?
A: Many individuals notice changes in their 40s and 50s, evidenced by minimized mental sharpness, fatigue, hot flashes (in women), and diminished sexual desire. Although symptoms usually begin in the 40s, women start losing progesterone and testosterone in their 30s (long before they lose their estrogen) and men begin to lose testosterone in their 30s.
A: Synthetic hormones are formulated with molecular structures different from the ones we make. Bio-identical hormones are formulated by natural sources like soy and wild yam, and have the exact same cellular structure as those produced in the human body. The difference is like having a key that fits a lock and having a key that is similar, but does not fit perfectly. Bio-identical hormones are the key that fits.
Q: What are the benefits of hormone replacement therapy? A: Re-establishing optimal hormone levels with bio-identical replacement therapy brings function back to cells, organs, and organ systems, and it can slow down the aging process. This not only improves quality of life, but also diminishes the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, and elevated cholesterol.
Q: Are there any risks or side effects with bio-identical hormones? A: The proper balance must be administered and monitored to avoid any imbalances. Bio-identical hormones have a lower risk profile than synthetic hormones, which pass through the liver and increase cardiovascular risks.
Q: How is the bio-identical hormone typically administered? A: There are several ways that bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can be administered for delivery to the bloodstream and distribution to the cells and tissues of the body. Some of the more familiar ways are oral ingestion, injections, and topical creams and patches. These are dosed daily, weekly, or monthly depending on the type; and can greatly improve low hormone levels. The sub-dermal insertion delivery (or “pellet”), developed in the late 1930’s serves as a most effective format for hormone therapy and is becoming a frequently preferred method among delivery options.
Q: How quickly do symptoms of menopause and/or andropause disappear? A: Some individuals report noticeable improvement within days, and others experience a more gradual improvement over a number of weeks.
Q: What should people look for in a doctor who is prescribing bio-identical hormones? A: It is important that your physician has a thorough understanding of BHRT as well as metabolic function. Your practitioner should have ample experience administering hormone therapy to females if you are a woman and males if you are a man.

The Arthritis Foundation (www.arthritis.org) leads the way in helping people with arthritis live better today and create better tomorrows through new treatments, better access and, ultimately, cures. They do this by funding life-changing research that has restored mobility in patients for more than six decades; fighting for health care policies that improve the lives of the millions of Americans with arthritis; and partnering with families to provide empowering programs and information. The Arthritis Walk features a three-mile and one-mile course followed by activities for the entire family. Movement is the best medicine, and the Arthritis Walk is a first step for many in taking control of their arthritis. For more information: www.2011arthritiswalkatlanta.kintera.org

Q:
Sometimes it seems as if so much is coming at me these days that I can’t handle it all and it just feels overwhelming at times. How do I stay afloat in this rapidly changing world?
A:
As a coach, rather than give advice, I throw out “balls” for you to catch and run with – or throw it back to me if they are not a fit for you. Consider the possibility of putting your “self” first. We are our greatest resource and the “presence” we bring to each moment is crucial. Results follow energy. Look to start your day by taking care of YOU. How do you do this? For each of us this is different and for each of us this changes over time as well. You may say, “Oh, I already do this.” And I may say, “Are you championing your inner child?” See all of us have one, no matter what age we are! Are you “self-nurturing” or do you look to get nurturing from outside yourself? As we begin to do this, we send a message out to the universe and it reciprocates by giving us solutions. Being more present in each passing moment allows us to group these “synchronicities” that then come to us and we begin to lose that feeling of being “adrift”. Going inwards to discover what “floats our boat”, giving it to ourselves truly becoming “self-supportive” leaves us feeling connected. This in turn opens up “infinite possibilities” for us to explore! Look for my column every other month! Please send your questions and comments to Farra Allen, M.A. Psych & Director LifeWorks School of Coaching. For more information please email farra@lifeworksschool.com. We welcome your response.

my best self Tiffany Terranova New business owner gets serious about skin care For a sun worshiper like Tiffany Terranova, sun protection was not always the first thing on her mind. However, after developing Stage II Melanoma, she was forced to re-evaluate how she enjoyed time in the sun. She still wanted that golden glow, so she turned to spray tanning, but quickly became dissatisfied with what was out there. She decided to come up with her own concept, and so RAW Bronzing Studio was born.
Being healthy about sun exposure is something everyone should be aware of – can you tell us about your experience with that? Like most people, I love being in the sun! Growing up, I hated wearing sunscreen (I was a total tomboy), was outside any chance I got and started going to tanning beds occasionally in high school and college. Now that I’m learning how to take care of my skin, wearing sunscreen daily and getting organic airbrush tans, my skin looks better now at 32 years old than it did when I was 22! We hear you are a multi-talented lady (skin care expert, artist, wardrobe designer) can you explain a bit about your background? I graduated with a degree in Textile Design from the University of Georgia and have been designing clothing, jewelry and textiles ever since. I’ve also taken breaks from my design business to get some ‘corporate experience’ and worked for Shabby Chic, helping to open new stores in Boston and Atlanta and also worked as a Department Manager at Bloomingdale’s. It’s really only been the last five years since hearing the ‘C’ word that I’ve become passionate about skin care and learning ways to live as healthy a life as possible. How did you land the job of wardrobe designer for Sugarland? I started a design business right out of college. That’s about the time I met Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles (but before it was Sugarland!). Being the creative gal that she is, we hit it right off and have been working together on various projects for years, from couture tops for stage to jewelry and to gowns. They came to me in 2009 and asked me to be the costume designer for the 2010-2011 Incredible Machine Tour. It was a dream project for me. 70

How do you stay healthy and active? I stick to a gluten-free diet and stay away from processed foods and sugar, but in no way do I deprive myself (ask anyone who knows me - I love food!). I also try to walk anywhere I can. Inman Park is a great community that’s perfect for that! I’ll admit my workout regimen hasn’t been as steady as I would’ve liked this past year. I’m a newlywed and our schedules have been crazy. We’re just now starting to settle into a healthy workout schedule again. It’s about balance, right? Speaking of balance, how do you organize your busy schedule? I’m not a very organized person by nature, so I’m learning to be a little more structured so I can stay focused. Sometimes my artsy, free-spirited self isn’t good for staying on track. I’m also working on ‘unplugging’ my Blackberry for at least one day a week. It’s amazing how relaxing it can be to disconnect for just one day. What would you say is your true passion in life? I am passionate about so many things, but no matter what it is I’m doing, it ultimately comes down to learning to live with peace and balance, living in the moment, being present and finding ways to love and serve people more. Whether it’s in my work life, personal life or spiritual life, my goal is to find authenticity, learn how to be less self-aware and live without regrets. Life has thrown me a few curve balls in my personal life and in business. I am so grateful for them now. They’ve taught me that it’s not so much about what you’re doing but how you’re doing it. What inspires you? The women in my life! I’m so blessed to be surrounded by so many amazing women who challenge me, keep me on my toes and who make me want to be a better person. What is the best piece of advice you received? My dad always says to “live life without regrets.” We’re not promised tomorrow. It’s important to tell the people around you that you love them today, follow your heart, and live with honesty and integrity.
How did the idea for your business come about? I’m very fair skinned (and after having Stage II Melanoma five years ago, baking in the sun is out of the question) and was tired of getting bad spray tans that were too dark, too orange and spending lots of time and money at spas on a service that should only take 30 minutes or so. I finally decided if I was feeling this way, I’m sure a lot of other folks were too and I’d figure out a way to get a healthy glow without having to get in the sun or a tanning bed. It’s evolved into what is now RAW Bronzing Studio, where our philosophy is to enhance your natural skin tone so you look amazing, but no one notices that you have a sunless tan.
