A sudden, strong urge to pass urine, urinating eight or more times per day, and getting up at least twice each night to go to the bathroom can be symptoms of an overactive bladder (OAB). OAB occurs when a miscommunication between the bladder and the nervous system causes the bladder muscles to contract at a time other than when one wishes to urinate. Being Mom May is a time we celebrate motherhood. My mom passed away a few years ago, and there is not a day that goes by when I don’t think of her and the things she said or would say in certain situations. When I was young, I didn’t really appreciate or fully understand her advice, often thinking what she said was “dumb” or irrelevant.

As an adult, I now realize how very smart she was. In fact, the most important things I know about life, I learned first-hand from my mother. She is with me and part of me forever. I am, in many ways, her. I used to dread the thought of “becoming my mother,” but now it makes me happy.

As a mom, it is my wish and hope that someday my children will embrace the lessons I have taught them and finally know I was not put on this earth just to annoy them. I hope, like me, they will someday understand and find happiness in the little pieces of me they see in themselves.

One of the many nuggets of wisdom my mom gave me was, “Never underestimate the power of a handwritten letter.” In this age of texts, Facebook messages and Instagrams, the handwritten note is very rare indeed. There is something special about getting a card or letter written by hand, not typed, that gives it a personal touch. In our Mother Knows Best feature (p. 43), local mothers share what they learned from their mothers and the wisdom they are passing on to their kids.

Moms are also passionate about keeping their kids healthy.

How can mom incorporate healthier practices into her life?

Most moms I meet suffer from stress and anxiety related to their families.

This, in turn, leads to unhealthy behaviors, including overeating and inactivity. I think all women should create a stress management plan for themselves and share it with their families. It could be something as simple as a daily morning run or a weekly massage. Find something you love and look forward to, but don’t let other responsibilities invade that time.

What is one healthy habit that every woman should have?

Nutritional consciousness is the best healthy habit.

Understanding your nutritional needs and deficiencies is the key to long-term health.

What is a great healthy gift to give mom?

A massage, spa trip or girls getaway is a great gift for stress management. Whole foods cooking classes, CSA (community supported agriculture) memberships and healthy recipe books are also good.

What is your idea of the perfect Mother’s Day gift?

How can mom create a new beauty look?

I have two toddlers, and the most important thing for busy moms is to build a beauty regime that is realistic with your schedule.

Establishing how much time in the morning you are willing to give yourself to beautify will help determine the best products and looks for you.

How can mom make more time for exercise?

The best time for moms to workout is whenever they can. My advice is to take a serious look at your schedule and see where there are windows of opportunity. For example, if you make time for TV, then work out when you watch it. If not, the best time to work out is in the morning before life starts to interfere.

How can mom create a greener home?

Read “Healthy Child Healthy World” by Christopher Gavigan. This book changed my life.

What is one environmentally friendly product that should be in every household?

Vinegar! This environmentally friendly and economical product can replace many of the more expensive and toxic household products for cleaning.

What is a great green gift to give mom?

A personal look book with pictures of your mom’s wardrobe. It’s like having your own personal stylist on your shoulder telling you what to wear every day. I’ve also done a framed collage of pictures of my mother dressed in amazing outfits going back to before I was born. Showing your appreciation for who she is and how she has inspired you is fun and she will have it forever.

What is the one beauty product that every woman should have?

Tinted moisturizer. This is my favorite multi-tasking product because it protects, primes and polishes in one easy step.

What is a great beauty gift to give mom?

This new procedure, called a fenestrated aortic endograft, involves using a fenestrated aortic stent-graft to reinforce openings and maintain blood flow to vessels that lead to other organs.

Instead of making a large incision in the stomach, doctors make a small cut near each hip.

Currently, this minimally invasive procedure is only available at Piedmont Heart Institute and Emory University Hospital. Patients who get this done typically have a very short hospital stay and experience minimal pain.

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the leading cause of central vision loss in adults over 55. There are two types: dry and wet. For those who have spent hours in the emergency room waiting patiently for a doctor to examine a sprained ankle or evaluate that terrible cold, few things are more frustrating than the unknown. The emergency room sees patients based on a value of high, medium or low priority. If you do not have a life threatening medical emergency, chances are you are in for a long wait. While hospitals are doing their best to meet the needs of patients, including creating systems for shorter wait times in the ER, it seems that urgent care facilities are rushing to assist as well.

With the increasing popularity and demand for urgent care facilities, patients are being seen in record numbers and in record time for nonemergency treatments. According to Dr. Martha Wilber, Associate Medical Director of Hospital and Acute Care at Kaiser Permanente of Georgia, urgent care facilities are a response to overcrowding. “I think most people recognize that we have a real problem of overcrowding in our emergency rooms,” she says. “This leads to long wait times, high cost for patients, and all sorts of situations where people with real issues cannot be seen quickly.”

So what types of emergencies warrant an ER visit versus going to urgent care? “Someone who collapses, or someone with heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, 11:15 AM or showing stroke symptoms, needs to go to an ER,” Sweeney says. “Something that can have long term effects if not diagnosed properly needs to go to an ER.”

Aside from the fast service, an urgent care facility will be easier on your wallet. “You are in and out [of an urgent care center] a lot faster because you are not dealing with life threatening emergencies that take all of the resources,” Sweeney says. “As for cost, you are not paying for all of those resources needed for a life threatening emergency, so you can do these things at a much lower price.”

According to Concentra, one of the nation’s largest workplace health and urgent care providers, more than 84 percent of people who attend the emergency room do not have a true medical emergency, and may pay up to six times more than necessary for treatment. An average self-pay patient cost for an ER visit is $922, whereas the average self-pay urgent care patient cost is $185. While urgent care facilities take most health care insurance, the co-pay will depend on your individual plan.

Do I need to be seen by a doctor now?” If the answer is no, many urgent care facilities are open on the weekends and offer extended hours. In cases where time is not an issue, some people may prefer being attended to by a familiar face and someone who knows and understands their medical history.

Know Before You Go While an urgent care visit is quicker and at a lower cost than a trip to the ER, there are a few things to keep in mind. A hospital emergency room is required, by law, to screen all patients who walk in the door, regardless of their ability to pay or not, and must continue treatment for life-threatening emergencies despite an individual’s finances. For an urgent care visit, this is not the case. “They are free standing and not bound by the same federal laws, so you need to know if you are able to pay or not,” Sweeney says. “A lot of urgent care facilities require payment before you are treated because it is not a medical emergency.”

Starting in 2014, the Affordable Care Act will provide access to insurance for everyone, regardless of employment or financial status. If an employer does not offer insurance, you will be able to buy insurance directly in the Health Insurance Marketplace for a lower price than private insurances.

Dr. Jeffrey Oyler of Piedmont Healthcare says the Affordable Care Act will have people managing their health and getting into their doctor’s offices more often, but it may also affect pricing within the urgent care business.

RemedyWater Another item to keep in mind is the staffing and types of services provided per facility. “It is varied by state what the requirements are [for doctors at a facility], and for many urgent care practices I’ve seen, they are all over the map,” Dr. Oyler says.

“Find out who is staffing it and who will be seeing you. A mid-level provider can be excellent for the right condition, but (the provider) needs to have the experience to know what they’re treating.”

Dr. Wilber recommends calling in advance. Many healthcare providers, such as Kaiser Permanente, have advice nurses available 24 hours a day, who are able to recommend the best place to go per incident. Dr. Wilber says to ask yourself, “What skills do the providers have?”

“If you were to go to a community urgent care, you might want to call ahead and ask if they do X-rays and suturing on site,” she says. “There is not a standardization. Do your research.”

The prices have come down. They’re fast,” Dr. Oyler says. “I think they are an excellent way to get mass groups of people assistance.

Urgent care fills a huge void that was not there 10 years ago.” When faced with a medical issue, questions regarding time, cost and severity of the condition should all come into play when assessing where to go. “The key to deciding whether to go to the ER or an urgent care center is to get the best care without delaying proper care,” Dr. Welch says. “Your best bet is to call the urgent care center and see if they think they can handle your problem.”

The Pros and Cons It’s important to know what to expect when you walk through the door of an urgent care facility.

PROS: ✓ Efficient: “They go through basic protocols of treating and do a good job with non-urgent treatments,” Sweeney says. ✓ Fast Service: “A lot of the time, it’s closer to your home. It’s going to be faster and you can get in and out quicker,” Dr. Wilber says. ✓ Free up time in the ER: “[Atlanta urgent care facilities] can make a quick identification and hand patients off to us,” Dr. Oyler says. “They keep

people from unnecessarily going to an ER, and it allows us to focus on the really sick people.” ✓ Lower cost: “You usually know up front what it will cost you before they do anything,” Sweeney says.

CONS: ✓ Be prepared to pay: “You do need to be prepared, it’s a business. They are going to want payment up front,” Dr. Oyler says. ✓ It’s a new concept: “The path of urgent care is new. There are certain surgeons or ER doctors who are gearing toward learning about urgent care, and it is a time of transition. It will be interesting to see how things unfold,” Dr. Wilber says. ✓ No standardization: “You can hang an urgent care sign out front, and be a nurse practitioner or physician assistant. While they are under the supervision of a board certified doctor, it doesn’t mean that is who will be seeing you,” Dr. Oyler says. “Then you go all the way to the other extreme with people who are board certified ER physicians, but who are just now doing urgent care.” ✓ Not equipped for major medical emergencies: “If you think it is life threatening, you need to go to an ER,” Sweeney says.

Growing Green Spaces Planting new ideas for a healthier tomorrow By Taylor Arnold It’s amazing to see that one green space in the middle of the city can do so much good for the people that tend to it. The benefits of a community garden are endless. Whether they are used to grow flowers, plants or produce, this type of garden is a great place to interact with neighbors and friends. It also serves as an opportunity to educate gardeners of all ages and often encourages a sustainable food system. Best of all, a community garden can thrive in a variety of unexpected places like vacant lots, rooftops, schoolyards and even street medians.

The Benefits According to Fred Conrad, community garden coordinator at the Atlanta Community Food Bank, the impact of a garden is tenfold.

“People who garden tend to eat more fruits and vegetables than people who don’t because they have more exposure to better food,” he says.

He also points out that community gardening has proven especially beneficial for seniors. “Gardening is low impact, but involves bending, stretching, light lifting and getting outside in the sun,” he says.

Working in a garden is a great activity for children as well. “It’s not competitive so there are no winners and losers, no teams, nobody is left out, and it’s a rare opportunity to all do well together,” Conrad says.

“They (children) also become familiar with nature, develop an interest in it and become environmental stewards later.”

Gardening can also serve as relaxation therapy. There are a variety of mental and emotional benefits that one can reap such as reduced stress and the satisfaction of cooking with food you’ve helped nurture. Other benefits can include weight loss, a sense of accomplishment and an escape from the rigors of everyday life – there is something for everyone.

“Community gardening brings people together from all walks of life,” says Bobby Wilson, president of the American Community Garden Association.

“People start to work together to help solve problems in their communities.

Vacant lots become productive pieces of land and people start feeling good about their neighborhoods.”

The Local Food Movement

To help make more locally harvested food available to the masses, programs like Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi’s “Giving Through Growing” are supporting food banks across America.

Thanks to a collaboration with this program and the American Community Gardening Association (ACGA), Woodbridge

by Robert Mondavi has pledged $55,000 to create five “giving gardens” designed to increase seasonal produce donations to food banks in five cities.

Community gardening has played a huge part in expanding the local food movement as well. “People now have access to fresh local food, and it helps everybody learn new recipes,” Conrad says. “When you harvest a lot of a given item, you learn what is seasonal and can try other things you might not otherwise try in the supermarket.”

In Atlanta, this pledge has gone toward expanding the Metro Atlanta Urban Community Garden, where residents are taught to grow their own fresh vegetables on small plots of land. The space has gone from 21 gardening plots to 53.

Kate Chura, executive director of the Southeastern Horticultural Society, knows all about starting a community garden after spearheading the launch of Chastain Urban Farm last year. In partnership with Cibo e Beve restaurant and the Chastain Park Conservancy, Chura has created what she calls an “outdoor classroom” where residents can grow organic produce while learning from gardening experts. “We want to engage park goers, volunteers and the community in every aspect of the development and programming of this venture,” she says. “Since October of 2012, we have hosted site preparation volunteer workshops, and soon will be adding healthy organic compost to the soil as well as a water catchment system.”

Before becoming a part of an already established community garden, you may want to get to know the community first. Neal McSpadden, who belonged to a community garden for a year says he definitely enjoyed it in the beginning. “It was great because I got to work outside, grow healthy and delicious food and meet like-minded people,” he says.

McSpadden decided to leave because of disagreements among the other gardeners about everything from boarders to pets. “The number one thing a new gardener needs to know is whether or not he gets along with the other gardeners,” he says. “You should also find out all their rules and make sure you agree with them.”

into friends and bringing people closer together in the spirit of healthy, sustainable living. “It’s about getting people engaged and excited about digging in the dirt, learning about plants, growing and sharing fresh organic produce and eating healthy food,” Chura says.

Here are a few tips from Fred Conrad to begin your own garden project: •

Pull together a small planning community. It needs to be a group effort from the very beginning.

•

Do the legwork. Organize meetings, settle on a site and put together an initial set of by-laws that make it possible for everyone to share one garden without conflict. For example, establish whether it’s okay to bring your dog to the garden, let friends pick from your plot, etc. Have a mechanism in place for giving a person’s plot to the next person on the waiting list if their plot looks bad or if they move.

•

Engage people who are social and like making phone calls. This will help recruit the needed volunteers.

•

Find a prime location. There are many senior centers that make spaces available. Faith-based properties like churches and synagogues are great, and they tend to have access to water, buildings and parking lots.

Homeowners associations often have to negotiate a site, which can be challenging. But oftentimes parks are a great site, and sometimes they provide water for you.

I think it’s better to have something that interests you if you are a stay-at-home mom because when your children leave (and it happens so fast) you will already have something that you like doing to fill the void. It can be volunteering for a nonprofit, a part-time job or a small business venture outside of your home.

What did you learn about yourself when you became a mom?

I learned that I could love more deeply and unconditionally than before. I also learned that it was a great responsibility and I had to rise to the challenge. Because of all that I learned, my husband and I worked together to make our community a better, healthier place so their lives and future can be the best it can be.

What is the most important lesson you learned from your mother?

Along with my birth mother, I have been beyond blessed to have several strong and powerful female role models in my life including my great-grandmother, three grandmothers, two step-mothers, my mother-in-law and a surrogate mother. They have all led by example and proven that you can be anything you want to be, even if it means fighting against the system and status quo. You just have to go for it, be confident and when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

I love sharing family meals and family reunions with my kids

When my kids grow up I hope they are: healthy, capable, thoughtful, compassionate and courageous.

The next vacation I want to take with my kids is to: the Antarctic. Things are changing there so rapidly due to warmer temperatures and we really want to see all the natural wonders in its most beautiful, pristine and functional condition.

I have two beautiful boys. Marcel is my oldest and is 13 and Benicio, “Benny,” is my baby and he is four years old.

How do you balance your work and home life?

I don’t think I quite balance it completely, but I try my hardest. My alarm clock goes off at 4:15 each morning. I have to be at FOX 5 ready to greet guests and plan segments starting at 6 a.m. At work I try to manage my time in the best way possible. I have my “to do” list and try not to divert from it. After work and on weekends, my time is spent driving the kids to various extracurricular activities, church and family time.

How do you carve out “me” time?

When managing a family and a career, things can get stressful. Carving out “me” time is extremely important. I try to stay fit by exercising several times a week, getting a massage once a month and taking care of myself. I am addicted to Zumba and take lessons at Dance Stop Studios and BAPA (British Academy of Performing Arts) in Marietta.

Going to Mass and keeping in touch with my faith also helps me stay positive and gives me strength when I’m stressed or feeling down.

What are some simple things you teach your kids about living a healthy life?

I try to get my kids into eating home cooked meals and trying healthy options. I keep them as busy as possible and physically active throughout the week.

What is your favorite activity to share with your kids?

I love snuggling and watching movies on cold days with my kids.

What is the best thing you have learned from your kids?

How to be patient. Being a former news assignment editor ready to deploy crews with a war zone mentality, patience was not something that came easily to me.

What advice do you have for moms striving to have it all?

Set your goals and try to achieve them. Realize that your children are their own individuals and that you can only help mold them into productive people. Give them an abundance of love and never give up on them.

What did you learn about yourself when you became a mom?

I learned that the love that a mother has for her children is eternal.

I also learned to appreciate and respect my own parents in a new way.

How do you balance your work and home life?

It can be very difficult at times to balance work and home life. My husband is supportive and very involved with our girls. Knowing that he has things under control at home makes it easier for me to focus on work when I need to.

How do you carve out “me” time?

There was a time when I felt guilty about carving out “me” time, primarily because I already spend enough time away from home. I soon realized how much better I felt after doing something for myself that allowed me to relax and disconnect from the rigors of work. We can usually come up with a multitude of excuses to not carve out “me” time but you just have to make a conscious decision to do it.

What are some simple things you teach your kids about living a healthy life?

Stay active and try to eat well. Fortunately, they enjoy being active with sports so that’s fairly easy to encourage.

I try to stress the importance of making healthier food choices, which is far more challenging.

What is your favorite activity to share with your kids?

My husband enjoys making home videos so we have lots of video material of the children over the years. Sometimes on rainy weekends we will spend hours watching home videos.

What is the best thing you have learned from your kids?

Enjoy the moment. Don’t worry about what’s coming next; enjoy what’s going on right now.

A perfect day for me is being with my family, cooking out and playing games…

What advice do you have for moms striving to have it all?

I think the best approach is to do what makes you the happiest, what makes you feel complete.

What did you learn about yourself when you became a mom?

I’ve learned to not take myself so seriously. With my first daughter, I read every pregnancy and parenting book I could get my hands on. As time went on and the second and third daughters came along, I learned to relax and enjoy the kids more.

What is the most important lesson you learned from your mother?

Be patient, be fair and consider other’s point of view and not just my own.

When my kids grow up, I hope they: stay true to themselves. Listen to that little voice inside of them that tells them to do what makes them happy.

It’s a constant challenge! My work schedule varies, so if I have a week where I’m doing extra shoots, I make sure the next week is very light so I can spend quality time with them. My mom was a working mom but always made our time together special so I try to do the same thing with my girls.

I love to get a great facial or manicure and just chill out and relax. Exercise is also a great way to de-stress and focus on renewing my mind, body and spirit. My husband is always great about helping with the kids so I can run off to a class.

We stress good nutrition, staying active and how important that is to leading a healthy life. We’ve also been teaching them about recycling.

What is your favorite activity to share with your kids?

We love to put on music and have a dance party! We also love to pile in the bed and watch movies. We have a house on Lake Lanier and last summer they both had a ball on the lake. I can’t wait for them to enjoy that again this summer.

What is the best thing you have learned from your kids?

That every moment of my life is setting an example for them. The words that come out of my mouth, my actions, the way I treat others, the way I react to things. They are watching and learning from me. It keeps me in check and helps me strive to be a better person.

What advice do you have for moms striving to have it all?

Really make sure you know what “having it all” means to you. Our priorities are all so different. So set a life goal, a mission statement for yourself and your family and try to live by it. Also learn how to say no. I used to be horrible about it, but now I realize that I can’t do it all so I give myself a break and prioritize things and try to figure out how I can give back to the community without sacrificing too much time away from my family.

What did you learn about yourself when you became a mom?

That I needed to be more patient. It’s never been one of my best qualities but it’s a must-have when it comes to kids.

What is the most important lesson you learned from your mother?

Where do I begin? My mom is incredible! She is funny, smart, kind and probably the most considerate, thoughtful person I know. She goes out of her way to help others all the time. She is an amazing role model and I strive to be more like her.

When my kids grow up I hope they: are amazing, smart, thoughtful people who follow their dreams and live out their potential in a way that fulfills and sustains them.

The next vacation I want to take with my kids: is to the beach. They love the sun and sand and I love watching them be so happy and carefree.

Midday Host on Kicks 101.5 Your first child is due in April, how are you and your husband feeling?

We are so excited! We just can’t believe that we’re going to go from two to three. We’re feeling really blessed - all these changes along the way have been so fun.

You saw a fertility doctor in the beginning. Can you tell us a bit about that?

At first, we followed my OBGYN’s advice and tried to get pregnant for a year on our own, but we were unsuccessful. After initial tests, we were told that we were both healthy. It was a confusing time.

I started going to an acupuncturist to help me get my body in line.

We saw Mark Schwartz with Buckhead Acupuncture and after a few months, he suggested talking to a fertility doctor. So on his recommendation, we decided to see Dr. Mark Perloe at Georgia Reproductive Specialists. We started visiting him in May and I was pregnant at the end of July.

Spring forward to your best self!

How was the process leading up to your pregnancy?

It’s just a roller coaster of emotions because you get excited and hopeful and then you start your period.

Then you get depressed and you think, “Why is this so hard for us?” You spend a few days getting over that and then you have to get back up again and say, “Okay, we’re going to be positive, and we’re going to think good thoughts.” And then you try it all over again. So even though we were very lucky after meeting Dr. Perloe to conceive so quickly, it was a long journey up until that point.

What is the activity that you’re most looking forward to sharing with your child?

The first one is all of us going to Piedmont Park as a family. I have visions in my head of all of us being outside on a beautiful spring day, laying on a blanket and having a picnic. The other thing is something my parents did with me, which was story time at night. I’m looking forward to reading books together and making that a priority.

What’s the most important lesson that you learned from your mom?

My mom made everything fun. If I could be one ounce as good as my mom at that, then I’ll have succeeded. Also my parents have such a strong marriage; they have been married for 42 years. That type of stability is just an incredible gift that they provided for my brother and me.

• Even if you pay your bills on time, you need to periodically check your credit report - Recent reports from the Federal Trade Commission state that at least five percent of all credit reports have erroneous information that could result in higher interest rates. The burden of your credit report accuracy is on you.

The Effects of Hormones on Aging Why does losing weight become more difficult after the age of 40?

As we age, men and women alike change, and the endocrine and immune systems are responsible for our body’s change in the aging process. The endocrine system regulates our body’s temperature, reproduction, growth, aging and immune system. Our hormones communicate between these systems, allowing our bodies to adapt to our environment. Hormone production decreases around age 40 and continues to diminish each year.

How do our hormones play a role in our ability to lose weight?

Recent literature found that 90 percent of women experience weight gain between the ages of 35 and 55, or what has been defined as perimenopause and menopause. There are four essential elements to weight loss: nutrition, exercise, stress reduction and balanced hormones.

Imbalanced hormones can directly impact appetite, fat storage and metabolism. Cessation of estrogen by the ovaries during menopause creates a need for the body to find another source. As a result, our body learns to convert more calories into fat to increase estrogen production.

Progesterone, an opposing hormone of estrogen, causes water retention or bloating as hormone levels decline. Testosterone in women works to build and maintain muscle mass, which works to burn calories and cause a higher metabolism. Insulin resistance occurs when the body incorrectly converts every calorie to fat. Over time, your body resists the insulin produced in the body.

What are the benefits of hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement does not reverse the aging process, but it can slow down the process to achieve less deterioration, less illness and a better quality of life. Hormone replacement helps us maintain our good health and prevent many age related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. Within six to 12 months of therapy, patients with balanced hormones notice reshaped bodies, fat disappearing, increased muscle tone, increased energy and more youthful looking skin.

What is a bio-identical hormone, and how is it different from a synthetic hormone?

A bio-identical hormone has a chemical structure that is identical to the hormone naturally produced by the body. We refer to them as natural because they are natural to the human body. Natural hormones cannot be patented by drug companies. Synthetic hormones have a structure similar to but not exactly the same as hormones produced by the body. These chemical differences mean that synthetic hormones act differently and produce substantially different effects. Natural (bioidentical) and synthetic hormones should not be considered the same or used interchangeably. A multitude of studies have demonstrated many harmful effects of synthetic hormones, whereas the medical literature supports no harmful effect of natural hormones, only beneficial effects.

Get the Skinny on Protein Are all proteins created equal?

No. The method for determining the quality of a protein is called the protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS). This score compares a protein’s amino acid quality based on both the amino acid requirements of humans and their ability to digest the protein. The highest value a protein can have is 1 and the lowest is 0. For example, eggs have a high PDCAAS since they contain the perfect balance of the nine essential amino acids (phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, isoleucine, methionine, leucine, lysine, histidine). Other examples of foods with a high PDCAAS score are casein (milk protein), soy protein, whey (milk protein), mycoprotein (protein from fungi), beef, soybeans, chickpeas, black beans and legumes.

With so many sources of protein available today (protein bars, shakes, powders, etc.), how do you choose the right one for your workout?

There are a variety of proteins that would be appropriate to have before a work out. In general, try to have a combination snack that has both carbs and protein, such as an apple and almonds or blueberries with a piece of cheese. If you don’t have time to prepare a healthy snack before or after your workout, it is perfectly okay to occasionally have a protein bar or protein shake. When choosing your bar, shake, or powder consider that they are not all the same. Some may be high in sugar or artificial flavors, sweeteners, and sugar alcohols. So always read the label to know what you are getting. Carefully read where the protein is coming from such as casein, whey, or soy.

What are the best proteins for building muscle?

The best way to build muscle is to eat a high protein food after working out.

Choose proteins that are lower in sugar and fat such a Greek yogurt and hummus.

When trying to build muscle the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends a protein intake ranging from 1.4 to 1.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day.

Each individual’s protein needs can vary depending on their health status. People sometimes have a misconception that more is better, which is not necessarily the case when it comes to protein. Keep in mind that having too much protein can put stress on our kidneys.

What are the best proteins for losing weight?

Choose proteins that are lower in fat and calories. For example, chicken breast and fish are lower in calories and fat than beef, although they may all have approximately the same amount of protein per ounce.

Is there an optimal time to consume protein to get the most out of a workout?

It’s best to have a small snack 30 to 60 minutes prior to working out. This snack is usually higher in carbohydrates, lower in fat and low to mid-range on protein. Post workout, have a snack within 30 minutes of finishing.

What is lipotherme, and how is it different from other methods of liposuction?

P D M  Lipotherme is a machine that uses heat to destroy the fat cells and tighten F R    : the skin. Usually this machine is used on smaller patients or women that N R    need a lot of skin tightening. Vaser lipo will do the same, and because it is ultrasound, it will also tighten the skin, just not as effectively as lipotherme. PAL and VENTX are two machines that we use to effectively remove large amounts of fat in the smallest amount of time. Many times we Body Awareness 4th.indd 1 will use two to three modalities, depending on the patient’s problem areas.

How does lipotherme work?

Lipotherme works by destroying fat cells with heat. Fat cells cannot reproduce, so once they are destroyed, they are gone for good. All of our patients are comfortable during the procedure. No one is put under general anesthesia, so the recovery is easier and the cost is less.

Is there any pain or discomfort associated with lipotherme?

You are sore the following day once the tumescent wears off.

Are there any risks or side effects with lipotherme?

There are always risks, but they are minimal. We have never had any complications that required medical treatment with liposuction.

What types of results can patients expect?

Patients can expect to see more definition and skin tightening. Results are permanent as long as the patient maintains their weight. If a patient gains weight, fat cells in other areas of the body will fill up.

What was your impression when you were in India and saw the foundation at work?

What was extraordinary was the streamlining and the efficiency of how (the meals were supplied). We start at four in the morning, by seven the trucks are out and by noon everyone is getting a fresh meal. And children are going to school because of that. It feels good to be part of this, and (this model) could be easily replicated anywhere in the world. They say the best way to get rid of your enemy is to improve the capacity for their well-being.

Remembering Marilyn SCAN founder Marilyn Fry 1948 – 2013

Marilyn Fry was a friend and colleague of ours. She lost her two-year battle with breast cancer and will be remembered by us for her wit, passion and commitment to raising awareness about skin cancer. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and no one was more dedicated to spreading the word about this disease than Marilyn. As the founder of the SCAN Foundation (Skin Cancer Awareness Network) and a survivor of melanoma, she made it her mission to educate the community and provide a source of information for future generations.

According to her family, she was a devoted Georgia Bulldog fan and lived life to the fullest, traveling the world and making friends everywhere. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1970 and began her career at Georgia Power, then went on to work at several computer companies, before landing at Delta Airlines, where she worked for over 20 years.

Fry’s legacy lives on through the great work accomplished by the SCAN Foundation and those who have supported her efforts. In remembrance of Marilyn and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, make sure you get screened. And don’t forget to wear the black and white polka-dot ribbon and support the tagline created by Marilyn, “See a Spot, Call Your Doc!”

“I was one of the lucky ones,” Fry once said. “Sadly, we just don’t take skin cancer seriously here in the United States.

To date, there are more than one million new skin cancers diagnosed each year. I want to promote healthy sun exposure and help others—just like me—to avoid the scare I went through.” She worked tirelessly through SCAN to make skin cancer screenings available in the workplace and public venues.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Approximately 90 percent of melanomas are caused by over exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light or sunlight, or from tanning beds. The good news is when diagnosed early, skin cancer has a 96 percent cure rate.
