Meet Our Team of Aesthetic Dentists
Best Self Atlanta Celebrates Its 10-Year Anniversary in August! Thank you to the Best Self community for making what many thought was impossible, not only possible, but amazing! Ten years ago when we started Best Self, the economy was in shambles and print magazines were considered “dead.” The odds were stacked against us.
Celebrating her 30th year in dentistry, Dr. Debra Gray King is a pioneer in cosmetic dentistry. She is one of less than 76 dentists worldwide to be an Accredited Fellow, which is the highest level of competence recognized by the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). She has been featured on The Doctors, Extreme Makeover, The Wall Street Journal, and various media outlets.
So, why has it worked? Best Self Atlanta has been a success because there is a strong community of like-minded Atlantans who believe in authenticity, positivity and kindness. These readers, followers, and business owners support each other and dedicate each day to inspiring and helping others live their best life. And our community continues to grow. What started with a little magazine has grown to reach hundreds of thousands through our website, e-newsletter, social media, contests, events, and our ever-expanding ambassador program. We look forward to celebrating our 10-year anniversary in August with a Party on the Patio at Big Sky Buckhead. We will be having fun and raising money for Development in Gardening (DIG). After a recent trip to South Africa, I was introduced to this charity through my good friends Mitchell Anderson and Richie Arpino. Come join Best Self for the opportunity to “dig deep” and give back to those in need. To receive your invitation, sign up for our newsletter at BestSelfAtlanta.com.
My Best List - A Gift from South Africa
Homemade Healthy Seed Crackers - Seriously Awesome! Ingredients • 200 grams sunflower seeds • 2 tablespoons psyllium husks • 60 grams flax seeds • 500 milliliters water • 100 grams sesame seeds • 1 teaspoon kosher salt Directions • Preheat the oven to 350 F. • In a mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and leave mixture to stand for approximately 10 minutes until it is thick and pliable (like a crunchy dough). • Spread the mixture as thinly as possible on a silicone mat on a baking tray. The mix should have no holes in it. • Bake for appoximately one hour. Rotate every 15 to 20 minutes until crispy. • Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Once cooled, cut them into any size you like. They will keep well in an airtight container. • Pair with the Secateurs Chenin Blanc by A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines, your favorite goat cheese, and enjoy! Here are some of the local retailers that carry this refreshing vino brand. Savi Provisions Buckhead, Jax Fine Wines And Spirits, Citi Wine & Spirits, Green’s Discount Beverages. For a complete list, go to our blog at BestSelfAtlanta.com.

While in South Africa, I visited A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines (AABadenhorst.com), the most amazing family-owned-and-operated winery. In fact, it was my favorite destination of our trip. Semma Badenhorst was kind enough to allow me to share a couple of amazing treats from that visit.

“The ability to help our patients regain their confidence and discover the best version of themselves is a reward like no other. A beautiful smile can improve your appearance and may even change your life. It’s reasons like these that I have spent the last 30 years perfecting my smile design process.” - Dr. Debra Gray King 0619_010-011_PUB.indd 11

One of my favorite issues of the year is here! After hundreds of nominations, thousands of votes, and months of photo shoot preparation and party planning, we are pleased to present the winners of our 9th Annual Over 40 & Fabulous! contest. Each year, I look forward to getting to know this awe-inspiring group of Atlantans. Reading the answers they submit for their Q&A articles always leaves me eager to do more for others and ask myself how I plan to make my midlife season one to be proud of. I am a firm believer in being better than you were yesterday and I often see this sentiment echoed among our winners in their answers. I always struggle to select the final anecdotes from their Q&As that will be included in the magazine because there are too many wonderful ones to choose from. That is why we’ve decided to publish the full Q&As on our blog. Once you’ve read the winner article (p.38), visit BestSelfAtlanta.com/Blog to find out what our winners love most about this stage of life, where they see themselves in 20 years, and so much more. With vacation season officially here, you don’t have to travel far to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Our team recently took a trip to Foxhall Resort (p.70) to do just that. I was amazed that this outdoor retreat exists just an hour outside of Atlanta. Complete with golf, fishing, hiking trails, and so much more, it is a sports lover’s paradise. Though we only went for one day, the resort has plenty of accommodation options for you to extend your stay. Next time I visit, I definitely plan to spend the night in one of the serene lakeside villas. But if anyone will be in need of rest and relaxation over the next few weeks, it’s our My Best Self profile, Bill Thorn. The 88-year-old will run his 50th AJC Peachtree Road Race on July 4! Turn to page 74 to find out about his race-day routine, go-to healthy meal, and beyond. No matter what age you are, I hope this issue fills you with motivation to tackle your goals head on.

TMJ Jaw Pain? Popping & Clicking? Therapeutic Injection combination therapy may be your answer! Do you have Jaw pain or clicking when you chew or have headaches that can’t seem to be diagnosed? This could be a temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) problem. Other symptoms include shoulder and neck stiffness, earaches, dizziness and unexplained headaches. TMJ problems are often accompanied by cervical and TMJ ligament laxity. Once the lateral TMJ ligament becomes lax the joint will click. It is important to note that clicking in any joint is an indication of ligament laxity of that joint. The body’s compensatory mechanism for such a situation is to tighten muscles and to grow more bone. The end result will be degeneration, arthritis, and stiffness in that joint. A combination of Bio-therapeutic injections to strengthen both the cervical vertebrae and the TMJ joint combined with manipulations of the affected areas to re-align the joints will often solve this problem. Call the offices of Total HealthCare to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced medical professionals today if you are experiencing these symptoms.
We are in-network.

Brows grow on a four- to six-week cycle. All brows, especially those that have been over-tweezed, need to be kept on a maintenance cycle to grow into their natural shape.
Q
A
What results should be expected?
You can expect fuller and more balanced brows within a few months, depending on the amount of hair growth in each cycle and how badly the brows have been damaged.

Q
What qualifies you to be a Beauty Boss?
A
When I was a hygienist in 1984, patients would always grab the mirror to see if their teeth were whiter. Although people care about the health of their teeth, how their teeth look is also incredibly important to them. In 1987, I went back to dental school to become a cosmetic dentist and I’ve studied this field ever since. I have an artistic eye and one of my hobbies is interior design. I can envision the final result and I can also offer my patients many treatment options.
Q
Why are porcelain veneers the gold standard in smile makeovers?
A
It’s the most conservative, beautiful, and lifelike restoration we have that most resembles enamel. Think of them as contact lenses for the teeth.
Q
Who is a candidate?
A
Anyone who is embarrassed of their smile or feels that they have teeth that are worn, discolored, crooked or not attractive.
Q
What should people know before they choose a cosmetic dentist?
A
Years of experience is extremely important and patients need to choose a doctor that does these procedures on a daily basis.

The Shortcut to a Sculpted Body Posh Body Slim
is now offered by Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic And Center For Anti-Aging in Buckhead, Atlanta. This “top” noninvasive treatment reduces unwanted fat in many areas—tightening and toning the skin, while contouring the body. It is a great way to sculpt your body without undergoing an invasive procedure. The best part is that it is painless, affordable, and you will see immediate results. Gail Slater says they added “Posh Body Slim Treatments” to the menu of services for their patients because,“This is the best noninvasive fat reduction/skin-tightening system they have found. We have our own patient photos to prove it! This technique destroys fat, tightens skin and helps contour problem areas.” So many of the current treatments on the market require multiple visits, are painful with less than promised results, and have a high price tag. We utilize a technique which destroys the fat cells and tightens skin while contouring the body—achieving beautiful and permanent results. Both men and women can get rid of unwanted fat and visibly tighten skin at the same time, with no downtime. Each session takes 60 minutes and four to six treatments are recommended for optimal results.

Q
What is RF?
Q
What are the benefits?
Q
Who is the best candidate for this treatment?
A
RF stands for radio frequency. It is a nonsurgical and noninvasive modality used by clinicians to help tighten skin and reduce fine lines, wrinkles, cellulite, and skin laxity. Instead of using laser light, which is a high frequency, to heat the tissue, radio-frequency energy is used.
A
RF is one of those treatments, much like microneedling, that has a long list of benefits. After a treatment, you will notice some immediate tightening due to contraction of the heated tissues. Long term, you will have significant collagen synthesis, which will plump up your collagen layer to create that fuller look young people enviously possess.
A
This is possibly the best part about radio-frequency treatments—almost anyone is an ideal candidate. Men and women benefit from treatments on the face and body (think tummy, legs, arms, neck or décolletage). TempSure™ is actually cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for African Americans, who are not able to undergo most laser treatments because of the potential for hypo- or hyperpigmentation. Plus, there is no downtime!
Q
How often do you need to have the treatment?
A
A series of four about four weeks apart is the most common frequency of treatments.
Q
What is the cost?
A
The investment for these treatments range between $250 to $2,400, depending what area we are treating and how many treatments we will be doing.

Q
Why is TransFirm® unique?
Q
What can I expect from the treatment process?
A
TransFirm® is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive treatment process. This comprehensive approach to facial restoration harnesses the power of nitrogen plasma.
A
Unlike a traditional surgical facelift, the TransFirm® process stimulates collagen and elastin production. Collagen and elastin fibers are naturally produced by your body to provide skin with structure and support, but their production naturally declines over time. The combination of treatments may be used to enhance facial or jawline contours, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, target and destroy stubborn pockets of facial fat, and tighten loose skin.

While there may be some discomfort associated with treatment, numbing creams are utilized to promote your comfort. Although there is minimal downtime, you should be able to resume your normal daily activities! However, you may experience some bruising or general discomfort in the treatment area. Results achieved will vary for each person and their specific concerns. But, most people enjoy initial results within a few weeks, and results gradually improve as your body produces new collagen and elastin.

2019 Partners in Health Men’s Health Recipe: The Secret Ingredients By Scott D. Miller, MD
If you were to bake a cake and only used flour, you would have one disappointing dessert. In fact, not only does grandma’s baking require a whole array of ingredients, it demands the right quantities combined with the best timing and finesse. At this point, you’ve caught on—there is no secret ingredient when it comes to your health. If there was a cookbook for longevity, the recipe for men’s health would read as follows:
INGREDIENTS
An ounce of prevention: Most men are not very reliable when it comes to seeing their primary care physician on a regular basis. Your doctor can often detect health concerns before they become symptomatic (or worse). Of course, receiving that “good bill of health” from your doctor does not give you free reign until next year. Rather, this office visit should reinforce practicing a healthy lifestyle on a daily basis.
Several pounds of exercise: Consistency always trumps intensity. Variety will help keep you coming back for second helpings. For instance, combine flexibility and strength training with varying intensities of aerobic exercise throughout the week.
Three cups of balanced meals: Countless fad diets come and go. Many of these dietary trends are not sustainable. The best eating habits are based on the appropriate number of daily calories of unprocessed foods that include a diversity of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates, and lean proteins.
A pinch of this and a palmful of that: Much like yeast being needed for bread to rise, we require adequate sleep to function. When sleep-deprived, we are more susceptible to heart disease, a weakened immune system, and life-threatening accidents. Rest also helps us deal with the physical and emotional stressors in life. Embracing meaningful connections with family, friends, and co-workers will further allow us to manage this stress.
So, grab a mixing bowl. Start with an eight-hour helping of sleep. Stir in some exercise to create the right consistency. Skim any stress that may have collected on the surface. Finally, add a balanced diet to taste. Then bake at 98.6 degrees for 80 years. Look for my article on “Back to School: How Men Can Boost Their Family’s Health” in the next issue. Scott D. Miller, MD, is the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at WellStar North Fulton Hospital. He is a urologist with WellStar Urology in Roswell and has practiced in Atlanta for over 20 years. The ABCs of Sciatica By Kristen Willett, DO
If you have ever suffered from pain that radiates from your lower back into the back of your leg or foot, there is a good chance you were experiencing sciatica. In fact, 40% of the population will experience sciatica at some point in their life.
What is Sciatica? Sciatica refers to the symptoms associated with compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body. The nerve is a collection of fibers from the lower lumbar and upper sacral areas that exits the spine and travels down into the muscles of the buttocks, through the back of the thigh and into the knee. Around the knee, it splits into the nerves that continue down into the calf and foot. • Sciatica may feel sharp, achy, or burn and may radiate from the back or buttocks into the outside or back of one of the legs. • It may intensify when standing up from a seated position, or when coughing or sneezing. • In more severe cases, it may be accompanied by weakness or numbness in the affected leg that could extend as far as the foot.
What Causes Sciatica? Several things can precipitate sciatica but the most common are: • A herniated disc—the most common cause. • Spinal stenosis—a narrowing of the nerve’s passageway that may be due to arthritis and degeneration of the discs. • Spondylolisthesis—slippage of one vertebrae onto another, causing the nerve to be pinched as it exits the spine. • Miscellaneous—things such as infection, tumors, and other disorders can very rarely disturb or compress the sciatic nerve.
How is Sciatica Diagnosed? When symptoms fail to resolve, see your doctor or healthcare professional. They will discuss your symptoms and history, as well as perform a physical exam to help determine your diagnosis. He or she may take X-rays to help with the evaluation. If necessary, advanced imaging studies such as a computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be ordered.
How is Sciatica Treated? Most cases of sciatica will resolve on their own or with a few simple treatments. Those treatment options may include: • Anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen, when appropriate. • A physical therapy program may be beneficial to create a customized core strengthening and stretching program, as well as to utilize other modalities that may decrease pain and increase function and range of motion. • Alternative treatments such as acupuncture and chiropractic care may be appropriate in some cases. Cases of sciatica that do not rectify with conservative measures such as those listed above may benefit from epidural steroid injections to directly reduce the inflammation around the nerve itself. For those individuals that do not respond well to these treatments or for those who have intractable pain or unresolved neurologic symptoms, surgery may be recommended.
How Can Sciatica Be Prevented?
40% of
the population will experience sciatica at some point in their life.
The best way to avoid spine issues, when possible, is to develop a strong exercise program for your core and to maintain flexibility with a stretching routine. It is also beneficial to sustain a healthy weight and to focus on low-impact exercise.

acterial plaque is the main factor contributing to bleeding gums. If we don’t practice good dental hygiene techniques, bacteria forms plaque around the teeth. Over time, these bacteria will result in inflamed, bleeding, and swollen gums. Bleeding and inflamed gums can also be a sign of gingivitis or periodontitis (loss of supporting bone, if left untreated, results in tooth loss).
• Step up your dental hygiene home care. • Make sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush. • Electric toothbrushes will help with better control of plaque (e.g. Sonicare) in some patients. • Floss at least once per day to prevent plaque from adhering to the teeth. • Maintain a diet that is low in sugar. • Check your medications. Aspirin and other pain relievers can cause gums to bleed more easily. • Stop smoking.

What if I still have bleeding gums after taking these steps? If changing your habits, diet, and medications doesn’t stop your gums from bleeding, seeing your dentist should be your next step. An X-ray of the teeth and gums may be needed to determine if more treatment or a deeper cleaning may be necessary to return your gums to health.
What causes periodontal disease? Predominantly gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, smoking and diabetes are well-established risk factors for periodontal disease. It is lined to an increase susceptibility to systemic disease (e.g. heart attacks, strokes, premature births, etc.). bestselfatlanta.com

Concierge Medicine: A Personalized Approach to Your Healthcare By Paul E. Cox, MD, MS
What is concierge medicine?
The concierge medical healthcare model allows for a patient-centered approach. You and your physician have the time to develop a personalized blueprint for preventive medicine that creates a long-term plan for your heath and wellness. The concierge model allows the doctor to make their relationship with you a priority, to personalize your health plan and to no longer only be a resource when you are ill. You have 24/7 access to your doctor, you have greater access to innovative labs and testing, and greater access to a physician who can help track your healthcare goals with you.
How does it compare to traditional medicine?
A concierge physician sees about 10% of the number of patients the average U.S. physician is seeing. A typical appointment in our concierge practice lasts a minimum of 30 minutes and can be up to an hour with the doctor. We feel this is necessary for optimizing your customized health plan, but in most cases, this would not be allowed in a typical practice, where insurance only allows for a very brief 10-minute appointment.
Why should I consider concierge medicine?
If you feel your doctor visits are over before they begin, you are not alone. For people seeking a better understanding of their health and increased vitality, the current healthcare system is stacked against them. In fact, the medical professional has a label for those patients more interested in health and vitality. They are called the “worried well.” Most doctors gloss over our observations with platitudes and prescriptions. At Vital Living Healthcare, we seek out the “worried well” because we understand they have legitimate questions and observations. We want the patients who are dedicated to the pursuit of a healthy, happy, and vital life. If you are considering concierge medicine, we would encourage you to come in for a complimentary mini consult with Paul E. Cox, MD, MS, and see if it is the right fit for you. Board certified in anti-aging and family medicine, Paul E. Cox, MD, MS, is an expert at turning back time. Firmly rooted in a scientific approach, Vital Living Healthcare focuses on early detection, prevention, and innovative treatments to reverse age-related decline. By using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques, along with focusing on all aspects of your health (mind, body, spirit, and surroundings), Dr. Cox will create a comprehensive and personalized design for maintaining or reclaiming your health and vitality. Experience the healthcare you deserve and schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Cox today.

Dry Needling: Moving the Needle on Pain
D
o you ever wish you could push the “reset” button on your aching muscles? A technique being utilized by BenchMark Physical Therapy and specially trained therapists across the nation is doing just that, moving the needle on pain. Dry needling, a new physical therapy treatment, may be the best choice for your injuries, aches, and pains. This method has gained a popular reputation as an effective treatment for pain relief, stiffness, and improving range of motion and flexibility. It is often used to treat sports and orthopedic injuries, but can also be successful for treating chronic pain and fibromyalgia. For years, dry needling was performed in Europe before becoming mainstream in the United States. Dry needling, often called “trigger point dry needling” or “intramuscular stimulation,” involves inserting a very thin filament needle into a “trigger point” or muscle spasm that sends pain to a specific area of the body. A trained therapist penetrates the ultrafine

To perform dry needling, a physical therapist must be certified, and have at least a year of experience. Typically, dry needling is conservative to start with to see how the patient responds. Over time, the technique can become increasingly aggressive. Making sure patients know what to expect from dry needling prior to their first treatment and making them feel comfortable is important. The procedure is rarely used in isolation. It is frequently used in conjunction with manual therapy, exercise, stretching, and an alternating regimen of heat and ice. If you would like to try dry needling, talk to your physician or physical therapist, and see if the procedure can be part of an overall treatment plan that can get you back to feeling better, with the stroke of a needle.

reviously, medical guidelines recommended regular screenings for colon cancer begin at age 50. However, new studies show a significant increase in colon cancer occurrences in younger adults. Because of this data, the American Cancer Society (ACS) updated its guidelines to reflect this trend and now recommends all average-risk adults—regardless of gender or ethnicity—start screening for colon cancer at age 45.
Colonoscopy: The Gold Standard
Colon Cancer. It doesn’t discriminate.
While at-home screening tests have gained in popularity, it’s important to know that not all screening methods are created equal. At-home tests have varying degrees of accuracy and can only detect colon cancer when it’s in advanced stages. During a colonoscopy, physicians can both locate and remove colon polyps (growths) before they have the opportunity to develop into colon cancer, making it the gold standard for colon cancer screening by physicians.
Are you covered at age 45?
Regardless of gender or race, colon cancer can affect anyone. But it is preventable. Although there are many colon cancer screening tests available, they are not all created equal. Colonoscopy is the only test that can detect and remove colon polyps before they have the opportunity to develop into cancer. Take-home tests can’t do that. If it’s time for your screening colonoscopy, call us today.

major focus of our practice is the treatment of morbid obesity. Morbid obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of at least 30kg/m2. BMI is calculated by weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Today, obesity has reached epidemic levels in the United States, and also in developing countries. The cause of obesity is multifactorial and includes a complex interplay of energy-rich diets, limited physical activity, and hormonal, psychological, and genetic factors. There are many associated illnesses of obesity. These associated illnesses affect essentially every organ system.

The respiratory system is affected by asthma, and obstructive sleep apnea. Gastroesophageal reflux, fatty liver disease, gallstones, and colorectal cancer affect the gastrointestinal system. The musculoskeletal system is affected by osteoarthritis, back pain, and disc disease. The neurologic system is impacted by pseudotumor cerebri, carpal tunnel syndrome, and depression. The reproductive system is affected by polycystic ovarian syndrome, fetal abnormalities, prostate, ovarian and breast cancer. With such an exhaustive list of various illnesses, one can clearly appreciate the fact that obese patients are at an increased risk of early death compared to their aged-matched control cohorts with normal body mass index. The treatment of morbid obesity therefore requires a multidisciplinary approach as well as, close follow-up and a willingness to adapt and combine treatment modalities. In our practice, we employ surgical and nonsurgical options. Patients must demonstrate that they have failed diets and other weight-loss programs before we offer surgical options. Our pharmacologic treatments include Phentermine, Phendimetrazine, Qsymia®, Belviq®, Contrave®, and Saxenda®. Our endoscopic treatments include the gastric balloon and endoscopic plication. Surgical options are generally employed when less invasive modalities have failed to achieve significant weight loss. We offer the laparoscopic or robotic vertical sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and duodenal switch. Our patients are enrolled in a nationwide database, which provides valuable information that leads to best-practice standards. Our minimally invasive approach leads to a quicker recovery, less pain, less scarring, and improved cosmetic results when compared to the open approach.
After We realize that such a recalcitrant disease requires vigilance and persistence at therapeutic interventions. Patients who initially lose at least 50% of their excess weight may regain a significant amount of the weight loss. Without long-term monitoring, patients who initially were considered cured of their associated illnesses may redevelop their associated medical conditions. Revision surgery is an option for patients that are willing to accept the risks of reoperative surgery and pledge to adhere to a healthy lifestyle and behavior modification. Unfortunately, the perfect treatment option for all morbidly obese patients does not exist. Areas of research include hormones, bacterial flora of the colon, endoscopic devices to limit absorption of calories, medications that enhance energy expenditure and procedures to alter the digestive anatomy. At the Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgery Institute, we are dedicated to the treatment of morbid obesity using both surgical and nonsurgical options. Our surgeons at Laparoscopic & Endoscopic Surgery Institute, P.C. have over 25 years of experience in management of a wide array of bariatric Brendon Curtis, MD Michael D. Williams, MD, FACS and general surgical issues. They have both undergone extensive specialty training that has enabled them to incorporate cutting-edge technology and advanced minimally invasive techniques into their care for patients. Services offered include medical and surgical weight-loss options. Our general surgical services also cover a range of conditions, including gallbladder disease, acid reflux, hernias, small intestinal and large intestinal conditions, any lumps or bumps (e.g., lipomas, cysts) and more.

Tonya Renee Guillory While enduring struggles with infertility, Tonya Renee Guillory never lost hope. The 47-year-old vice president of sales for Georgia for BenchMark and Drayer Physical Therapy brings that inner strength to everything she does. Not one to let any mountain stand in her way, the adventurous mom can also be found shredding the slopes. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? My little girl, Lily. My husband, David, and I spent eight long years trying to conceive. Doctors finally diagnosed me with the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s, and with the proper medication, I was able to give birth to our perfect baby at 42. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? Giving back is one of the most important parts of my life. It allows me to show my daughter how important it is to help others. I am on the advisory board of Atlanta Women’s Empowerment, which was created by one of my best friends, Lisa Driggers Milam, to uplift professional women and mentor younger women.
What inspired you to do this particular kind of charity work? When I was trying to get pregnant, our dogs literally saved me. My work with veterans is inspired by my father’s service as a lieutenant in Vietnam and watching him live with post-traumatic stress disorder. I have a soft spot for the elderly because I took care of my grandparents, who suffered from Alzheimer’s and numerous health issues, for the last four years of their lives. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but one of the most rewarding as well. What is your favorite way to work out? We have a complete home gym and I work out four to five times a week. My workouts are a stress relief for me. What is your favorite healthy meal? I love to cook different kinds of fish. Salmon is my favorite. How do you maintain the balance between self-care, family, work, and giving back? Learning to achieve and maintain balance in my life is a work in progress. I work hard because I love what I do and want to set the example for our daughter that hard work, dedication, and giving back will be rewarded. What is your favorite getaway? Beaver Creek, Colorado is where we can truly unplug. My husband is a lifelong all-mountain skier. I wanted to take up his passion, but skiing never clicked with me. So, at 40 I started snowboarding. In just a few years, I’ve made it to Level 6, with Level 7 being the highest. I love shredding down the mountain. We are even teaching Lily to snowboard! Who are the experts who help you be your best self? The therapists at BenchMark, Max Sanchez at White Salon and Spa (for updos), and Trenton Witherspoon at Day Makers Salon (the best blowouts). Dr. Suzanne Ferree Turner of Vine Medical keeps me healthy with a holistic approach. I am forever grateful to Dr. Andrew A. Toledo at Reproductive Biology Associates for helping us bring our miracle child into the world.

Dr. Eric Steenlage and I hold annual events at Union Hill Polo Club that raise thousands of dollars for veteran and animal charities such as Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, Inc. BenchMark and Drayer Physical Therapy are also committed to giving back and we have our own organization called Pillars with Purpose that raises money for various causes. In 2018, we raised $301,000 for the American Heart Association. I have also gotten my co-workers involved with the Adopt-a-Senior program through Neighbor Love.

Inspiration Award Terri Ellis-Ewing
After overcoming hearing loss caused by a traumatic head injury, Terri Ellis-Ewing, 54, has made it her mission to get hearing aids and implants into the hands of those who need them. The charming co-founder of Wade Ford car dealerships in Smyrna is an advocate for the Auditory-Verbal Center, Inc. What is your favorite way to work out? Three to five times a week, I power walk up to 3 miles with my dogs at the Chattahoochee River or a park while listening to an amazing music playlist. One song I love is "Beginnings" by Chicago. That’s also when I create all of my positive thoughts and aspirations for the week. I also love going to Club Pilates to keep my body aligned, flexible, and strong.

Hair by Max Sanchez of White Salon and Spa, makeup by Blend Beauty Group, The Green Room Agency.
What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I am passionate about working as a board member for the AuditoryVerbal Center, Inc. (AVC) because when I was 11 years old I was hit by a car, which damaged my hearing by way of a traumatic head injury, and my hearing has been degenerative each year since the accident. I remember being in school and not being able to hear lectures and conversations and being too embarrassed to let people know that I couldn’t hear them. Once I received my hearing aids, it changed my life tremendously. Most of the children we work with at AVC are on Medicaid, have no health insurance, or simply cannot afford hearing aids or implants. So our mission is to raise as much money as we can to help these children and young adults have a better quality of life. Where do you go for “me” time? I travel twice a year to Miraval in Tucson, Arizona. It is a place to recharge through spa treatments, classes, healthy eating, yoga, meditation, hiking, and much more. I love its program because at the end of your stay, you write a letter to yourself that the staff then mails to you three to four months later to remind you of your goals and the things you learned during your visit. What is your favorite quote? 'The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.' —Alice Walker. I pride myself on 'never losing my power' by staying healthy, being a great mother, wife, mentor, loyal friend, and always staying true to myself. I believe I should never stop learning, giving back, and bettering myself in every way that I can. Who are the experts who help you be your best self? Club Pilates in Sandy Springs; Life Time Athletic, Sandy Springs; Massage Envy; Massage Heights; Salon NP Hair Design by Nathalie DeLoach; Dr. Chynna Steele Johnson of Steele Dermatology; Makeup By Kimaris; Lush Nails & Spa; Dr. Michael A. Give-Back Award Bridgitte Ferraro Hatfield Service truly is at the core of who Bridgitte Ferraro Hatfield, 44, is. When the wife, mother, and business co-founder felt called to take her giving back up a notch, she launched RefuseToDoNothing.org and has touched thousands of lives ever since. How has your perception of this age changed since you were younger? I have always admired people in their 40s. Their style, demeanor, and attitude are a reflection of the life they have lived. My grandparents were great examples—they were loving, vibrant, stylish, successful, and family oriented. What is your favorite getaway? Spending time with my husband, six children, and our furry babies at our little mountain house in Blue Ridge enjoying comfort food, music, board games, and sunsets. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? My favorite way to give back to the community is by working locally, nationally and globally. Locally, I volunteer weekly at public schools. I work in the media center at Crabapple Crossing Elementary School (CCES) and Milton High School. I also organize and implement a monthly themed appreciation event to celebrate the 85 staff members of CCES. I also work with the Junior Beta Club in Roswell and volunteer monthly at the CHRIS 180 group home in Atlanta. I make a homemade dinner—from appetizer to dessert—complete with flowers, table setting items, and a host gift. I spend the afternoon and evening with the girls and staff talking, taking pictures, laughing, and encouraging.
On a national level, I support and raise money and awareness for Autism Speaks, Best Buddies International, Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®, CURE Childhood Cancer, Food Allergy Research & Education®, Feeding America, Atlanta Humane Society, Parkinson’s Foundation, Project Linus, Walk MS®, and Refuse To Do Nothing. On a global level, in 2018, my husband and I funded and built eight sustainable, clean water wells in Uganda. I also worked with eight schools in the country to provide clean water, latrines, meals, and clothing to students in need. Since 2015, I have made and gathered close to 3,000 pillowcase dresses through Pillowcase Dresses for Missions. I added Britches for Boys this past year with the help of Rachel O’Neill from Little Dresses For Africa. These items have gone to eight countries and have been hand-delivered by myself or someone I know personally. The mission began by helping one girl cover her body to aid in achieving confidence and dignity and has exploded into giving to clinics and shelters for the patients to go home in a clean new dress at discharge. I also make shoe patterns, raise money, provide education about the jiggers parasite, and have been a short-term missionary and am on the board of directors for Sole Hope. What inspired you to do this particular kind of charity work? I am constantly inspired by others and want to do my part by 'Refusing To Do Nothing' to honor my Biblical stewardship. I want my children to notice that random acts of kindness can be in our own zip code or 6,000 miles away. We do not have to be directly affected to do something. Each act of service that we make locally, nationally, or globally, makes a profound ripple effect toward the greater good. Name something on your bucket list. Eileen Rosencrants
Michelle Falconer
Eileen Rosencrants has never been scared to take the road less traveled. The vivacious Keller Williams Atlanta Perimeter realtor, 67, finds joy in lifting up those around her.
When it comes to living life after 40 to the fullest, Michelle Falconer serves fabulosity in a major way. The tennis player, 43, who founded Bailey & Hunter Realty, focuses on being an energetic and thoughtful role model for youth and more.
Did your parents look and act the way you do when they were over 40? Not at all. We were a very traditional Irish-Italian Catholic family. Every Sunday, we went to church, had dinner at 1 p.m., and went to visit our grandparents or cousins. That tradition created a strong family bond that still exists today. At the time, I yearned to spread my wings. After college, I did that by being the first person in my family to move away from Massachusetts and come to Atlanta. What do you love most about this stage of life? With each decade comes more wisdom, acceptance, and perspective. I don’t take things as personally anymore and realize it’s not about me, but somebody might just be having a bad day.
What is your favorite way to work out? I start each day at Hard Exercise Works - Roswell. It’s a high-intensity boot camp with amazing people. I also take private ballroom dance lessons with the fabulous Melbin De La Cruz. This feeds my soul and creative expression, which we all need. What is the best thing you’ve learned about yourself since turning 40? There is always an opportunity to learn. Keep an open mind for other interests and opportunities to continue to develop. One career path does not mean another won’t come your way.

What is your favorite way to give back to the community? There are many wonderful organizations in Atlanta supporting the arts, and that fight illnesses that affect my family or friends. I’ve had the pleasure of volunteering in various capacities for numerous charities for over 30 years. The Arthritis Foundation has been a primary focus for the past 10 years, from chairing several balls, to being a committee member, or on the Leadership Council.
Who are the experts who help you be your best self? Su So-Longman; Dr. Alissa Marzetti - DPT; Melbin De La Cruz; An Mai of Lovely Nail; Jeffrey Frost of Frost Hair Salon; the coaches of Hard Exercise Works Roswell. bestselfatlanta.com

What is your favorite way to work out? I was part of a traveling dance company when I was a teenager and I like working out to be fun. Through tennis, I get to hang out with friends and be active at the same time. I’ve even convinced my husband to come play doubles. #TeamFalconer What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? Raising four beautiful, caring, sweet, and amazing children is by far my best accomplishment. It has been a wild ride but they all make me proud. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? If there is something I can do with kids, I’m in. The thing I’m most proud of is sponsoring a triage room at Hughes Spalding hospital with my extended family. When my youngest daughter was treated in that room and asked why our name was on it, I was able to explain how a triage room makes a difference for families of sick children. The second thing that stands out as a special giving moment was taking my oldest daughter to Swaziland [Eswatini] twice with an organization called Beyond the Game. This organization provides food to over 1,000 orphans in Swaziland daily! I’m also regularly involved with Jack and Jill of America, Inc. where I work with teens. Who are the experts who help you be your best self? Tracie Edmonds of Tracie Edmonds Signature Salon is my go-to hair and makeup artist. And my dear friend Maja Sly always dresses me out of her closet for my photo shoots. BEST SELF ATLANTA

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? As a single mom, raising three independent, strong and beautiful girls will always be my No. 1 accomplishment. What is your favorite way to work out? I love anything martial arts related. I get quite an adrenaline rush from kicking and punching a bag (or a person!). I hold a second-degree black belt in taekwondo and won the bronze medal in sparring at the ATA World Championships in 2017. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I focus my charitable endeavors on organizations that educate and empower women and girls. I am copresident of the Atlanta chapter of Ellevate Network, a global professional women’s network. I am also actively involved in organizations in the financial sector such as Females and Finance, and Women in Insurance & Financial Services. What is your favorite getaway? Anywhere with white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and the sun shining. Who are the experts who help you be your best self? I credit God (the ultimate expert) for the strengths he has entrusted to me, and my friends and family who keep me motivated, grounded and always feeling loved. Professionally, my podcast producers (Liger Partners) always support me. In terms of feeling and looking my best, Amy Nelson (Style Design, LLC) is a gift! I’ve always loved fashion, and since meeting Amy, I have learned how to best enhance my look. I also rely on the team at Anderson Aesthetics in Alpharetta, and my chiropractor Dr. Michael Zoeller of Synergy Release Sports.

For over two decades, Engle R. Coulter has proudly served in the United States Air Force. The 45-year-old has learned how to turn obstacles into opportunities for growth. What is the best thing you’ve learned about yourself since turning 40? I have learned that taking ownership when I fail is a good thing. It helps me grow as a wife, mother, employee, and leader. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I currently serve in an activated reserve status at Dobbins Air Reserve Base. There, I have served as the president of the Dobbins Top 3, which is an organization that mentors rising leaders in the Air Force through an acronym we created called T.E.S.T. (Train, Empower, Support, Trust). We also provide financial assistance when an Airman is in an extremely challenging situation. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? Professionally, my greatest accomplishment is obtaining the grade/rank of E-8 (Senior Master Sergeant). I surpassed my father, who was an E-7 (Master Sergeant) when he retired. I remember the proud look on his face when he first saw me in my promoted rank. What inspires you to give back to your fellow servicemen? I watched my dad enjoy his work every day. He enjoyed not just serving his country, but serving others. He thrived on being better and making others better around him. I wanted to be a part of that kind of team atmosphere. He was my first example of how to be a servant leader. Who helps you be your best self? My husband, Roy, and kids, Jordyn and Cameron, my mother, Earnestine, my father, Bill, and my sister, Sarah. Plus, my mentors, retired Chief Master Sergeant Suzy Clemons, and Lil Palmer, one of my former rock-solid bosses. bestselfatlanta.com

What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I have a passion for uplifting youth and helping those in underserved communities, especially people of color. One of my core ‘give-back’ goals is to ensure African-American girls see smart, beautiful, powerful and compassionate women who look like them. I deliver on that goal through various organizations like the Agape Youth & Family Center, The PIVOT Foundation, the Rock Teen Youth Mentoring Program, Centennial Place Academy Mentoring Program, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Another organization that’s near to my heart is The Goode Foundation. My close friend Kerry Goode was diagnosed with ALS in 2015. Several friends from The University of Alabama organized an annual gala to raise funds to fight the disease. Where do you see yourself in 20 years? Enjoying the fruits of my labor via retirement from one of the best global companies in the world, basking in the success of becoming a thriving entrepreneur—influencing style confidence via my own media platform; encouraging women to discover and embrace their unique style, continuing to give back to the community, and enjoying my summer home in Bermuda! Who are the experts who help you be your best self? Randall K. Smith of RKS Couture keeps me in grand style. Keon Brunson keeps my hair fabulous. The Perfect Brows ensures my brows are flawless. Sugarcoat keeps my nails on point and Dr. Sylvia W. Wright of Peachtree Dermatology ensures my skin stays beautiful. What makes you laugh? I have eight rescue animals and they all make me laugh. In the past, I have rescued about 35 cats and 20 dogs. I am a huge animal lover! Whether they are relaxing or posing for the camera, they are a great comic relief for me every day. What do you love most about this stage of life? Seeing my three children learn and become independent young adults is by far the most rewarding aspect of my life as a mother. Being able to use my engineering degree from Georgia Tech to pursue a different career path has been an unexpected life surprise. Opening Ivy Lane has allowed me the opportunity to combine and share my passions—fashion and service to others. What is your favorite way to give back? For the past three years, Ivy lane has hosted charity fashion shows. The shows have raised $23,000 for Sources of Strength (SOS) programs at Lassiter, Pope, Sprayberry and Kell high schools and $13,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. SOS trains teachers and student volunteers on how to identify students at risk for suicide and provide appropriate intervention. It is so exciting to see the great things happening at these schools through this organization. Who are the experts who help you be your best self? My longtime friend Dr. Blaine Minor helps me successfully manage my autoimmune issues. Chiropractic care is essential to my well-being and Dr. Karla Renee Kale De Pena and Dr. Gerald Kraus have been treating me for years. My personal trainers encourage me and help me stay fit. I regularly work out with Tracey Prinzbach at Elite Health & Fitness Tang Soo Do, and Mary Beth O'Reilly at Attitude Fitness. What advice do you have for someone who isn’t yet over 40 and fabulous? Let go of self-doubt, drop the pity parties, and stop comparing yourself to others. Trust that God really is in control. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I work with two DeKalb County churches to coordinate “pop-up closets” stocked with free clothing for families in need. I also visit nursing homes with my two young sons to teach them the importance of nurturing our elders. My mother worked in nursing homes and I remember feeling sad for patients who never had visitors. We also clean up parking lots and sidewalks in our south DeKalb neighborhood. It's a humbling way to remind my sons Dr. King went to Memphis to fight for garbage workers and that we must remain humble enough to do whatever God calls us to do in service to others. Where do you go for “me” time? Stone Mountain’s peak for prayer and meditation, or my sunny arts-and-crafts room where I paint, and thrift stores for retail therapy. Who are the experts who help you be your best self? Emory Speech pathologist Paula Klingman-Palk helped me get back on track after I was diagnosed with a psychogenic stuttering disorder in 2017. Norma Harris at Atlanta Shambhala Center taught me the value of peace of mind and how to meditate. Nathalie Ellis of ESTEEM Counseling and Consulting Services improved my stress management skills and helped me break through years of depression and 'Pastor Buddy's' sermons carried me through some of the toughest days of my life. Linda Tiger Bell of Tiger Talent Management suggested a great vitamin regimen and maximized the glamour of my natural hair.

Voting results were so close that we wanted to recognize these next in line Fab Five. They enhance the lives of those in their communities through health, fitness and more.
What is the best thing you’ve learned about yourself since turning 40? I spent my 20s more concerned with what people thought of me and where I was in life. With age, I have realized that none of it matters! I now live my life with more confidence and authenticity than when I was younger. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? My kidney donation to my dad. The gift of life is the greatest gift I could give. What is your favorite way to work out? I could run all day. Put me on a trail and daily stresses disappear from my mind. The only worry is tripping on roots or sliding in the mud, but that is also part of the fun. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I use the platform of my store and design firm, Status Home, LLC and Status Design Studio, Inc., to help the community any way I can. Each time there is a national disaster, Status becomes a donation center. We have collected backpacks for the homeless in Atlanta and filled them with supplies. Last September, we hosted a car show for Eli’s Cruise For A Cure, which raised money for Tay-Sachs disease. I have a dedicated employee at Status whose job is to be on the lookout for any way we can help our community. She works with churches and other nonprofits to make sure they know Status is here to help. bestselfatlanta.com

Tannaz Modaresi, DC When she’s not calling the shots at her chiropractic office, you can find Tannaz Modaresi, DC, on the basketball court. The volunteer coach, 41, is always up for a good laugh and a new adventure. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? I’d have to say becoming a mother to my beautiful twins, Arta and Atousa. And being able to free people from pain through my chiropractic practice, Injury & Wellness Specialists of Georgia, is also one of the most amazing feelings. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I enjoy helping others in any way possible. This year, I have volunteered with the Fulton Science Academy Private School by providing them with chiropractic care for their athletic team, helping to keep young growing spines healthy. This season, I have had the privilege of coaching an i9 Sports® basketball team, which I really enjoyed. What is your favorite way to work out? I love cycling, barre workouts, and dancing. Who makes you laugh? Iranian-American stand-up comedians Max Amini and Maz Jobrani. Name something on your bucket list. I want to learn to fly an airplane.

Caren Cohen Caren Cohen is an avid reader and outdoorswoman. At 47, this youthful yogi and mother of two helps people push past their limitations. Plus, she has a soft spot for aiding families in need. What is the best thing you’ve learned about yourself since turning 40? I have learned that happiness is really about how you look at things. I take pleasure in the small things now and I stopped waiting for something big to happen. What is your favorite way to work out? I love anything that makes me sweat and clears my head. Yoga is one of my favorites, but I also run and work out at F45 Training regularly. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I like to help families. For the past several years, I have volunteered with Second Helpings Atlanta and Family Promise, which are both organizations that support families in crisis. I also volunteer a lot at my children’s schools. Our schools literally can’t function without parent volunteers. This is one of the most important ways I can give back to my community at this point in my life. What is your favorite healthy meal? Don’t laugh—but it’s mixed vegetables cooked with tuna and Parmesan cheese. Everyone else thinks it’s gross but I could eat that every day! What is your favorite book? I love to read. It's hard to narrow it down but a favorite is "Until the End of the World" by Sarah Lyons Fleming.

Kristen Marotte Whether inspiring her fitness class attendees at Life Time Athletic, Sandy Springs or her nearly 20,000 Instagram followers to live a healthier lifestyle, Kristen Marotte, 52, is always seeking opportunities to help others flourish. What do you consider to be your best accomplishment? I have traveled to nearly 60 countries, and my experiences overseas have done more for my personal development than all the education I have received from books or schools. I’ve had so many meaningful personal accomplishments, but my greatest came when I put more focus on family. I’m super proud of how close we are and of the choices my kids make on a daily basis. That’s worth its weight in gold, and no accomplishment will ever outweigh connection!
What is your favorite healthy meal? Grilled salmon, sautéed veggies, and a fresh caprese salad.
What is your favorite way to give back to your community? For the past 15 years, my husband and I have spent two to three hours every week helping engaged couples build strong foundations for their marriages based on our experiences as a blended family. I also spend a lot of my time motivating others to be fit and active. I teach restorative yoga classes for the high school sports teams, as well as conduct free classes and workshops at local athletic stores to inspire people of all ages to stay active.
What is your favorite quote? 'Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.' —Charles R. Swindoll

2019 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! THE FAB 5 CONTEST WINNERS
As a midlife coach, Kwavi Agbeyegbe is passionate about spreading the message that the second half of a woman’s life can be the best half. Human rights issues and competing in marathons are no match for this 51-year-old. What do you love most about this stage of life? It’s a stage overflowing with an abundance of possibilities. Society, some cultures, and the media sometimes paint an unpleasant picture of midlife for women and I’m determined to change that narrative for the better. My goal is for women to unapologetically live midlife on their own terms. What is your favorite way to work out? I ran and completed marathons for years but in 2018, I developed pain in my right knee. I decided to take up racewalking and haven’t looked back. I participated in the 2019 Publix Atlanta Marathon, Half Marathon & 5K in March and racewalked all the way. What is your favorite way to give back to the community? I created the Kwavithon 5K walk/run to support various charities locally and worldwide. For the past two years, the Kwavithon 5K has supported the Mirabel Centre. The Mirabel Centre is a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) based in Lagos, Nigeria, my country of origin. The Kwavithon 5K event has been a platform to bring awareness of the prevalence of rape and sexual assault in the community and open up the conversation on what can be done to reduce the incidence of rape and sexual assault. The 3rd Annual Kwavithon 5K will take place in Lagos later this year. To read the full winner Q&As, visit www.BestSelfAtlanta.com/Blog. bestselfatlanta.com

2019 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! ADVISORY BOARD: HAIR AND MAKEUP Nyssa Green, The Green Room Agency
Beauty Builder
With the twirl of a blush brush, Nyssa Green became more than just a makeup artist—she became an entrepreneur that saw a unique opportunity in Atlanta’s beauty industry. ome wasn’t built in a day but Nyssa Green’s booming beauty business practically was. The first day after Green did Monica Pearson’s makeup in the late ’90s, her brand took off. In fact, from doing Pearson’s makeup to primping and prepping the team at CNN and being recruited by other local celebrities, Green founded her own booking agency in just a few months. The Green Room Agency was the first of its kind in Atlanta—a boutique agency for freelance talent in hair, makeup and styling services.
Since then, she’s worked for numerous news anchors, mayors, presidents, movie stars, music titans, football teams, reality shows and more. In her chair, John Amos has spilled untold secrets from the set of “Good Times,” Diane Warren shared her favorite cover of her song, “How Do I Live,” and she’s had serious girl talk with 11Alive and former Olympics correspondent Cheryl Preheim. She has six Emmys for her work in TV, and continues to train, manage and represent some of the city’s hottest talent, earning her an expert beauty reputation synonymous with excellence. “I love to be able to talk women into letting me go for it,” says Green. “But
I’ve learned to listen, more than I work. People are allowing me into a space that usually they are the only person in. Who else gets that close to your lips? Who else gets that close to your eyes? It’s a big deal to me and I don’t take it lightly, because it is such a personal thing.” When she’s not working, you’ll find Green at home with her dogs, Bear, Keva, and Oreo— three of the reasons she’s passionate about working with the Doggies on the Catwalk Foundation charity fashion show. She loves shopping and finding new foodie gems with girlfriends, and still gets giddy over anything beauty and makeup. Photography by (left) Tameesha Steed. Photo courtesy of (right) Nyssa Green.
Meanwhile, The Green Room Agency continues to add new talent to its team, establishing the brand as a trusted source for hair, makeup and image development. “When I first started, makeup artists were only behind the scenes,” Green says. “Now, we’re influencers building makeup brands, and more out [in] front. And there’s going to be even more of this as the industry grows.” If it’s at the hands of Green, we can’t wait.

2019 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! ADVISORY BOARD: MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS Dr. Anjenette Sorapuru, DNP, Santé MD Wellness Center
Winning with Weight Loss Dr. Anjenette Sorapuru, DNP, helps her patients find the ideal weight loss method for them and provides them with the tools to successfully maintain their new look.
D
r. Anjenette Sorapuru, DNP, and her team at Santé MD Wellness Center believe a weight loss program doesn’t do much without a new, healthy lifestyle change to sustain it. And though they’ve perfected their process for losing weight, their ultimate focus is making sure each client can keep that weight off after the program is complete. It begins with a unique, personal experience for every patient from the very first assessment. Based on where a patient is currently and using six different evaluations and treatments, Dr. Sorapuru can monitor progress and make adjustments that allow patients to achieve their goals. She uses scientifically based medicines combined with alternative practices, taking a fundamental and comprehensive approach to ensure success. This includes qualifying patients for prescription medicines, conducting lab tests to study body composition, overseeing food sensitivity tests to rule out potential interferences, and administering FIT3D scans to customize a program specifically to each patient’s body type. Dr. Sorapuru also uses vitamin IV therapy to replenish and support a healthy new lifestyle, and oxygen treatments to improve memory, increase productivity, alleviate stress, decrease muscle pain, and boost energy levels. Patients learn about industry misconceptions (the ugly truth about fad diets, why diet medications are misunderstood, etc.), are continuously monitored, and receive medical counseling from Dr. Sorapuru and her team even after they’ve completed the program.

“What I love most is seeing the direct impact that I have on the lives of my patients and their families,” says Dr. Sorapuru.
“One of my patients had a goal to lose weight prior to renewing her vows. She struggled with weight, even more so with her thyroid issues, and all attempts to lose weight had failed her, even with her extreme dedication. After working with her [through our customized programs], the weight came off and she looked amazing for her ceremony. With the lifestyle changes that she is now accustomed to, the weight has remained off, and she frequently tells me how much I’ve changed her life.”

2019 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! ADVISORY BOARD: Midlife Community Living Melanie Poole, EVOQ Town Flats at Johns Creek
Luxurious Living for Midlifers EVOQ Town Flats at Johns Creek is a modern luxury community that allows its residents to revel in the freedom of empty-nester status. Designed for the mature working professional, its amenities complement the on-the-go lifestyle of those who call it home.
E
VOQ (pronounced “evoke”) Town Flats was developed out of the realization that there was a hole in the luxury for-lease housing market for empty nesters, explains Melanie Poole, managing partner for EVOQ Town Flats. “When you look at the overall for-lease market, you can find a multitude of communities for millennials, and ‘retirement’ communities that provide needed assistance like meals and healthcare. Yet, there is nothing focused on the still-working and very active empty nester—someone that is at the point in their life where they control their schedule and how they want to enjoy their newfound freedom of kid-free living.” “This community also appeals to people who have remarried later in life and want to start over together in a new home,” she adds. “At EVOQ, you will find all the luxuries of home-like living, without the mortgage.” Its 23 unique floor plans offer one- or two-bedroom layouts with oversized kitchen islands or peninsula layouts, separate dining rooms or offices, and relaxing outdoor spaces. The en suite bathrooms offer separate his-and-hers vanities, large ceramic-tile showers, grand soaking tubs and oversized walk-in closets. Premium floor plans deliver 11-foot ceilings, wrap-around verandas with beautiful wooded views, some flats even include a 46-bottle wine refrigerator. The community’s amenities ensure residents can maximize their time and enjoyment—a true complement to the lifestyle of an on-the-go mature working professional.

“EVOQ Town Flats has been designed to live like condos and give residents all of the luxuries they have become accustomed to in their homes,” Poole says. Its lock-and-leave culture also highlights the benefit of living around people who are at the same age and stage of life, enjoying the ability to do what they want to do, when they want to do it, and without worry.
EVOQ has thought of everything the high-end for-lease consumer could want, from the self-serve beer and wine Taproom to a Music Lounge, saltwater pool with tanning ledge, outdoor pavilion with TVs and more. 2019 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! ADVISORY BOARD: Hormone Replacement Therapy Dr. Naureen Adam and Dr. Nazanin Jafarian, MDn2 Aesthetics and Wellness
Hormone Help is Here
With bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, there’s no need to slog through fatigue, mental fog, anxiety or other aging side effects. This modern method makes patients feel like themselves again and can even boost health. hat’s better than a double board-certified physician taking a natural approach to health and wellness? Two physicians with that unique set of perfected skills and passion for their patients. At MDn2 Aesthetics and Wellness, Dr. Naureen Adam and Dr. Nazanin Jafarian are a powerhouse team that help men and women reverse the negative side effects of aging. “When you first come in for a consultation, you’ll probably talk to both of us,” says Dr. Adam. “People can reach us whenever they need to and we’re both going to know each person off the top of our head. We work synergistically and make their experience truly amazing.”
(L TO R): DR. NAZANIN JAFARIAN, DR. NAUREEN ADAM
Most amazing is the way they’re modernizing hormone replacement therapy. Using bioidentical molecules through pellet therapy, they help both men and women feel like themselves again. The treatment requires a small incision, then a dosage pellet is inserted that lasts three to five months, depending on that individual’s needs, activity level, and gender. It provides a steady stream of hormones over time, unlike messy creams or injections, and allows the physicians to tweak dosages as the patient’s needs evolve. “A patient’s treatment plan is not one-size-fits-all. It has to be unique to them,” Dr. Nazanin Jafarian says.
Photo courtesy of (left) Dr. Naureen Adam and Dr. Nazanin Jafarian.
“Our delivery method and the fact that we use bioidentical molecules is what makes [this type of] hormone replacement superior,” Dr. Adam says. “Hormones that have been used in the past are from another species and they do not resemble the actual human molecule, which can lead to issues like stroke, heart attack, etcetera. Because bioidentical molecules are made from plants, they exactly replicate the human molecule. They’re more preventative when it comes to cancer and that kind of thing than we’ve known hormones to be, traditionally.” Seeing the transformation patients experience after the treatment is what brings both doctors the most joy. “We
had one woman who was working on her Ph.D. and now had the energy to do everything she needed to do and was more motivated than ever. She lost 20 pounds and looked like a completely different person,” says Dr. Adam. And knowing that they are a part of helping clients live their best life at any age is what keeps this dynamic duo motivated every day. www.mdn2.com | www.facebook.com/MDn2Aesthetics | www.instagram.com/mdn2_aesthetics

The most common treatment options for women over the age of 40 are the ones that help them transform their bodies. Whether they’re recovering from major surgery, want their prepregnancy physique back, are wrapping up their weight loss journey or correcting something they’ve disliked for a long time, procedures like breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (a tummy tuck), or what’s known as the mommy makeover (a combination of breast surgery, tummy tuck and liposuction) offer a chance for that new look.
AFTER
For patients interested in breast augmentation and/or a breast lift, Dr. DiFrancesco utilizes a range of breast implant shapes, sizes, and ABDOMINAPLASTY CAN BE HELPFUL TO REMOVE AND surgical techniques based on each patient’s unique needs and desired outcome. TIGHTEN EXTRA SKIN. One of the newer techniques in breast rejuvenation includes fat transfer to the breasts, which can be used to add volume to your breasts with or without breast implants. The approach involves using liposuction to remove fat from one area of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs or hips and then injecting it into the breasts.
“My patients keep me motivated. I love being able to help people, especially women, improve their self-esteem,” says Dr. DiFrancesco. Former patient Ashley M. had this to say about her recent procedure. “My breast reduction surgery was a success. For years, I had been walking around with huge breasts that affected my back and self-esteem. Dr. D and her team have been amazing with helping me through the healing process. Thanks Dr. D for giving me that extra boost of confidence.” For more information on any of these procedures, contact Dr. DiFrancesco at 404-377-3474. www.drdifrancesco.com | www.facebook.com/DiFrancescoMD | www.instagram.com/DiFrancescoPlasticSurgery Individual results may vary.

Whether those goals include retirement, paying for the college educations of their children, buying a second home, quitting a day job to go after their dream job, or something else, Schilling and her team help make the midlife chapter something realistic and attainable. Her team answers common questions like, “Can I retire early?” “Are my investments working hard enough?” “What makes for a sound estate strategy?” They have up-to-date knowledge of investing trends, such as high-risk, high-reward stocks from Brazil, Russia, India, and China (often referred to as BRIC countries in economics), which possess the world’s largest populations and an increasing presence in global markets. They also have knowledge of frontier stocks, an even newer trend from developing economies with less established markets. Whatever a client’s investing style, Schilling’s team works constantly to review if their investments are working efficiently.

2019 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! ADVISORY BOARD: Eye Health Dr. Anar Maurya, Woodhams Eye Clinic
Seeing Clearly Through a groundbreaking procedure, the team at Woodhams Eye Clinic can not only treat cataracts, they can actually prevent it from developing.
G
one are the days of reading glasses being the only solution for issues associated with aging eyes. At Woodhams Eye Clinic, Dr. Anar Maurya leads the charge toward providing excellent eye care and educating patients on the various treatment options available, including PreLex™, also known as presbyopic lens exchange. This revolutionary procedure can actually prevent cataracts, which is essentially the aging process of the eye, from happening. “In general, readers can be a constant reminder of aging. We are able to reverse the need for readers and thereby let patients feel young again,” says Dr. Maurya. During the 15- to 20-minute treatment, the eye’s natural lens is swapped out for a multifocal artificial lens. The new lens allows the eye to focus both near and far, mimicking its natural function. For many patients, this result makes PreLex™ better than traditional cataract surgery and LASIK, which are focused on clear vision at only one focal point, and especially beneficial for midlife patients who often lose the ability to see well up close. More PreLex™ perks include the fact that it also treats myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and presbyopia, which is losing the ability to vary your focus, especially after the age of 40. Once implanted, the new lens will not deteriorate with age,
J. had this to say about her experience, “I just had my second lens exchange [PreLex™]. I can’t tell you how amazing the results of this surgery have been. After years of wearing contacts and glasses, I can see perfectly. Dr. Woodhams and his staff are

and patients shouldn’t need corrective lenses. Sharon
so wonderful.” PreLex™ is just one service that Dr. Maurya and the Woodhams Eye Clinic team offer as part of a comprehensive optical health office that is laser focused on the patient experience. Under one roof, patients can maintain their regular eye health visits, be fitted for glasses and contacts, and undergo various outpatient surgeries including the most advanced laser vision correction surgeries and state-of-the-art lens implantation procedures. “At Woodhams Eye Clinic, optometrists, opticians, and ophthalmologists all work together as a team to provide the best care to our patients,” adds Dr. Maurya.

2019 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! ADVISORY BOARD: SEXUAL HEALTH Dr. Monte D. Slater, Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic & Center for Anti-Aging
How to End Intimacy Issues Dr. Monte D. Slater creates an environment where patients feel comfortable discussing sexual health problems. At his facility, state-of-the-art treatments performed by a caring team provide life-changing results.
s a board-certified OB-GYN, Dr. Monte D. Slater uses his 30 years of experience with couples to shape a unique environment at Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic & Center for Anti-Aging. Here, women and men can comfortably resolve the intimate issues that have such a tremendous effect on self-esteem, self-confidence, and quality of life. He’s curated a menu of head-to-toe services and recruited a caring staff to ultimately create a culture where every patient feels like family … and that keeps them coming back. It all begins with a family-run practice. Dr. Slater’s wife, Gail, manages their team of healthcare professionals in a nurturing, maternal way that purposefully trickles down into the patient-care model—one based on the way Dr. Slater would want his own family to be treated. The results speak for themselves. “Dr. Slater, Mrs. Slater, Cassie [Smith] and all staff are absolutely incredible! Not only do they make you feel like family, they are professional and truly care about their clients,” says former patient Jamie. “I have [had] two V-Lase® treatments already and I am very happy that I did. It’s worth the money. It’s very comfortable, painless, and an amazing treatment for women like me who have had children,” says R.P.
Among these modern methods are laser treatments (V-Lase®) that can restore tissue and improve function, including the nonsurgical treatment of urinary incontinence, and advanced regenerative treatments such as platelet-rich plasma, amnion, and GAINSWave® (shock wave therapy for men) to treat and restore function in the genital tissue, notes Dr. Slater. “My goal is to make every person that I come in contact with feel special and good about themselves,” he says, nodding to his own mentors for the values that have shaped his current practice.

“I want to have some kind of positive impact, whether by providing a treatment for them or just having a conversation about what is bothering them. Patients often tell us we are not like any other practice they have ever been to, and we take great pride in that.” https://slatermd.com | www.facebook.com/aestheticbodysculpture | www.instagram.com/DrSlater

Sharing the life-changing treatment options that are available to men and women facing intimacy issues is Dr. Slater’s core mission. 2019 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! ADVISORY BOARD: MEDIA AMBASSADOR Tom Sullivan, Media Personality
Changing It Up
Media personality Tom Sullivan knows how to roll with the punches. His humble flexibility has allowed him to not just survive in an ever-evolving field, but to thrive.
M
ost people know Tom Sullivan. For decades, he’s been a vibrant voice on the radio, a contagiously energetic personality on TV, he’s made events memorable and he’s popped up around town promoting various businesses and fundraised for heartfelt causes like SafeHouse Outreach, FOCUS + Fragile Kids, and SERV International. His passion for people inspired his start, and what he’s done with that gift has made the ebb and flow of his nontraditional workweek worth every minute. In 2010, he left his radio job to explore other options that could feed his strengths and expand his love for people and their stories. Molding a job into the career that he wanted has helped him remain a prominent, recognizable face (and voice) throughout various media platforms, and focus his energy and talents on the things he’s truly passionate about. He’s been able to adapt to a changing media landscape by adding several facets to his talent résumé, which now includes voice-over work, hosting Facebook LIVE videos, and broadcasting from around the country. Throughout the years, he’s found that it’s important to know exactly who you are, learn from your experiences and continue growing. For Sullivan, that also meant an even deeper evolution in his own career. His mantra is: Put God first. Be yourself. And, it isn’t about the money. “I remember growing up in radio watching the Grammy Awards and seeing many artists start their acceptance speech by saying, ‘First, I want to thank God.’ I grew to understand how important that is to me. All of my success, everything is because of Him,” says Sullivan.

“I’ve stopped trying to be someone I’m not. There’s only one Tom Sullivan and that’s why I’m hired. When I started my career, I was chasing the dollar, doing any gig that paid. Now, I don’t sacrifice my integrity or beliefs when booking an event. If the client doesn’t value me or what I bring, I pass.” As he reflects on his personal growth, he advises others to “Keep growing, listen, and ask questions. Life is a journey, never stop learning.”

The Atlanta Best Media/ Best Self Atlanta team recently had a Team Activity Day (TAD) outing at the locale just outside of the perimeter. More than just a nearby sanctuary from the city, Foxhall Resort is a bona fide outdoor sports lover’s paradise that offers fishing, hunting, swimming, kayaking, tennis, golf, hiking, and so much more. For our group of thrill-seekers, our day was action packed with sporting clays, ATV riding, and archery. As soon as you enter the grounds, which are also home to 16 lakes, it’s easy to see why Atlantans flock to its beauty. Rolling hills with green grass and lush trees stretch almost as far as the eye can see. Ducks and horses greet you with a glance from afar as you drive along the gravel roads.

Once all 13 of our team members arrived, we kicked off the day by sitting down for lunch at The Paddock. Its menu by executive chef Jeremy Swofford is inspired by the Southern landscape surrounding it—from the new rich smoked collard dip with housemade chips to the BLT featuring corncob smoked bacon, romaine lettuce, and tomatoes on heaping slices of Texas toast. Once our bellies were full, we headed to the sporting clay area where all of our activities

were conveniently located. From there, we separated into three groups and our guides John Murphy and Caleb Carson helped each group get the hang of its activity. For those interested in skeet shooting with shotguns, Caleb took them to a pavilion that overlooked the bottom of a hill. There, five stations were set up for shooters. And although our team varied in experience with gun familiarity, Caleb provided easy-to-understand instructions and safety information that made all feel comfortable. He even helped first-time shooter, art director Dona Halliday, hit a clay target on her first try! At the same time, other team members were taking the wheel of ATVs and exploring trails with the guidance of John. From splashing through puddles to maneuvering tight curves and rocky pathways, the roughly 30-minute ride got us up close and personal with some of the site’s 15 miles of ATV trails. We wrapped up with archery. Along with compound bows and longbows with easy arrow guides, the resort also offers a 3D archery course with lifelike rabbits, deer, and even bears. After just a few hours of fun at Foxhall Resort, our team was refreshed from an afternoon filled with adventure. We all cherished a chance to unplug and get outdoors for some grown-up playtime. If you’re in need of your own respite, consider a day trip filled with activites or check-in to one of the property’s cottages to extend the unforgettable experience. my best self Bill Thorn
On July 4, Bill Thorn and thousands of Atlantans will start their day with the same goal in mind—to finish the AJC Peachtree Road Race. The only difference? This will not only be the 50th anniversary of the race, but also Bill’s 50th time running it. By Wyndi Kappes The 88-year-old has not missed a single race since its inception in 1969. This grandfather has battled traffic, sprained ankles, prostate cancer and more, but year after year he has shown up and crossed the finish line of the world’s largest 10K. The age-proof athlete gives us his insight about the race and his routine.
What are some of your favorite AJC Peachtree Road Race memories? I remember all the way back to that first race when there were no T-shirts and they didn’t even clear the roads. I was running with my two sons, Bill Thorn Jr. and Terry Thorn, who were 10 and 6 years old at the time, in the smog of the passing vehicles! It was a mess, but I am happy that we were part of the original 110 participants who finished. By the third year, the race had grown and the roads were closed off. We used to race past Rich’s and Davison’s [department stores] and finished down the BILL THORN hill across from the [former] Equitable Life Insurance building on Peachtree Street where there was a nice fountain in the front. On that hot July day, we would all jump in and cool off—a relaxing end to the race. Nowadays, I just love being a part of the event and crossing the finish line. Longevity has always been important to me and I have made it my mission to start and finish each year. I am proud to have done that for nearly 50 years now—that’s over 300 miles covered!
What do you like about the Peachtree in particular? I look forward to the routine. I get up early and do a stretching sequence followed by eating something protein-rich or having a juice drink. The whole family then drives to a MARTA station and we ride the train up to Lenox Square mall before walking to the starting line. The Atlanta Track Club puts me up in the first start wave every year, which is great and I usually get to say a few words on the stage after the race. Then, my family and I head home and have a cookout. My favorite post-victory meal is a hamburger (without the bun) with pickles and onions.
What’s your secret to staying healthy?
Who helps you be your Best Self? My family. I have four kids and a wonderful wife, Patty Thorn, whom I have been married to for 64 years. I couldn’t ask for anything more from them. They support me so well, from getting me to the race and cheering me on to doing it with me. My granddaughter, Kenzie Bayman, who has run it with me for 14 years, even helped me cross the finish line a few years ago when I had some problems with my balance. Race attendees were motioning me off the course but my granddaughter knew how important it was to me to finish the race and encouraged me as we completed the last leg together. Without my family, none of this would be possible. To learn more about the AJC Peachtree Road Race and its 50th anniversary, visit AtlantaTrackClub.org/Peachtree.

I am intentional about working out every day, sticking to my morning routine, and doing the best for my body. When it comes to my diet, I don’t eat anything specifically organic but I also don’t go berserk. I generally stay pretty consistent with what I eat week to week. Each morning, it is either half of a grapefruit and a bowl of cereal with rice milk, or half of a bagel or some type of muffin with coffee or herbal tea. As for dinner, we are big into home-cooked vegetables. At least once a week we will have wild salmon, asparagus, and baked potato. I stick to water or a natural drink, like grape juice. It’s not all healthy though—I love indulging in Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups occasionally.
