WHY DO PEOPLE TRAVEL THOUSANDS OF MILES FOR ONE OF OUR SMILES? THE ATLANTA CENTER FOR COSMETIC DENTISTRY, founded by Dr. Debra Gray King in 1987, is one-of-a-kind haven for your smile transformation. World-renowned for enhancing the smiles of many celebrities, it has also transformed the lives of thousands of people from all walks of life, from doctors, to soccer moms, to business executives and beauty queens. The transformation process here is performed quickly, with lots of pampering, and minimally invasive techniques. Your smile and oral health are very important. If you have been thinking of enhancing your smile, you owe it to your self to seek out the best. After all, your smile is not the place for on-the-job training. To get optimal results, it takes a well-trained, experienced doctorartist. Dr. King is one of only a few dentists in the world to be an Accredited Fellow, which is the highest level of competence in the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. She also has been extensively sought out as an expert on dental trends in the media, including CBS, CNN, Fox News, The Doctors, Extreme Makeover, Entertainment Tonight, The Wall Street Journal, Time, InStyle, Vogue, Glamour, and USA Today. To arrange a consultation, or for more information, please visit our website or call. You will love your new smile!

from the editor Play Like a Girl

I’ve always fancied myself a sporty kind of girl. Over the years I dabbled in a few seasons each of softball, dance, basketball and eventually tennis. But at the end of middle school, organized sports were over for me. Not because I didn’t want to play anymore, but because I knew how intense high school sports could be – I was a little intimidated, and I wasn’t convinced I liked tennis that much. After my eighth grade tennis season, I quit.

Unfortunately, this is the story of many young girls across the country today. Some fear rejection from peers who, at this age, are increasingly concerned with appearance and other social pursuits. Many girls simply haven’t found a sport or activity to ignite their passion. All of them are working against the stereotype of what it means to “run like a girl” or “throw like a girl.” Whatever the reason, young women abandon regular physical activity as they head into high school, which has serious implications for their fitness later in life. As our feature article on p. 27 reveals, if a girl does not participate in sports by the age of 10, the chances of her exercising at age 25 are only 10 percent. Thankfully I found my way back to a life of fitness, but it took until my junior year of college before I exercised regularly again. Check out our feature and do your part to make sure girls in your life enjoy those valuable years of physical activity and all the important life lessons that come along with it. Happy reading!

What genre do you recommend people explore? Humor is always fun – I love a book that makes me laugh out loud! Authors such as David Sedaris, Annabelle Gurwitch, Carol Leifer and Chelsea Handler write some of the funniest essays around. What are your favorite books released this year? “Blood Will Out” by Walter Kirn, “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd and “Andrew’s Brain” by E.L. Doctorow. What is your favorite book? That’s like asking a mother which one of her children she loves the most! Two of my all-time favorite titles are “Steve Jobs” by Walter Isaacson and “A Prayer for Owen Meany” by John Irving. Do you prefer to read physical books or e-books? I read both physical books and books on my Kindle, iPad and on my iPhone with the Kindle and iBook apps. I read digitally when I am traveling or don’t want to carry around a heavy book. How do you pick a great book? There are several excellent blogs and e-newsletters that I read weekly: www.themillions.com, www.avclub.com, www.goodreads.com, www.pwweekly.com and www.nytimes.com. I also listen to author interviews on NPR’s “Fresh Air.” www.bestselfatlanta.com

What genre do you recommend people explore? Poetry. But rather than just one poem from one author and one from another as we read so often in school, I suggest that people read an entire book of poems by one author. I’d recommend “Thrall” by U.S. Poet Laureate and Emory faculty member Natasha Trethewey. What are your favorite books released this year? One of my favorites is Thomas Pynchon’s “Bleeding Edge,” a tale of the dot-com bust and 9/11. What titles will teens enjoy? As a young teenager, I was obsessed with Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain and Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising Sequence. Both are classic fantasy tales, but with less wizards than personal growth. China Miéville’s “Railsea” is a more recent novel that should grab teens. I also recommend Scott Westerfeld and Philip Reeve for those interested in smart young adult fiction. What is your favorite book? Mark Z. Danielewski’s “House of Leaves.” It is about a house that is larger on the inside than the out, and it is the scariest novel I’ve ever read. How can someone pick a winner in the bookstore? Ask a bookstore employee! They really do know what they’re talking about!

What genre do you recommend people explore? Some of the best writing today happens in graphic novels – they’re not just about superheroes anymore. Start with “Maus” by Art Spiegelman, “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, “Blankets” by Craig Thompson or “Stitches” by David Small. What are your favorite books released this year? “The Martian” by Andy Weir, about an astronaut who survives after being stranded on Mars and “The Shining Girls” by Lauren Beukes, featuring a time-traveling serial killer in Chicago. Which lesser-known authors should people get to know? Get to know some of Atlanta’s own writers: David Fulmer (mystery), Jessica Handler (memoir), Laurel Snyder (children) and Kate Sweeney (nonfiction). What titles will teens enjoy? “What They Always Tell Us,” by Martin Wilson, “The Forest of Hands and Teeth” by Carrie Ryan and “Angus, Thongs, and FullFrontal Snogging” by Louise Rennison. What format do you prefer to read? I prefer physical books because they provide a tactile, sensory experience that allows a reader to escape one’s life, and they don’t interrupt you with Facebook updates or new e-mail notifications.

What are the top three best books released this year? Emily Giffin’s “The One & Only,” Nickolas Butler’s “Shotgun Lovesongs” and John Waters’ “Carsick.” Giffin does a remarkable job of examining the complexities of people’s personal decisions. Butler’s novel is about four men in a small town and one woman who’s meant something special to each of them. “Carsick” is actually 1/3 memoir and 2/3 fiction (and 100 percent hysterical). Which lesser-known authors should people get to know? Michael Pitre, who served in the Marines, has his first novel out called “Fives and Twenty Fives” about two Marines deployed in Iraq. Thrity Umringar has been published for years but doesn’t get the attention she deserves. Her latest book is “The Story Hour.” What titles will teens enjoy? “The Book Thief ” by Markus Zusak and “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie. Also, every teenage girl should read “We Were Liars” by E. Lockhart. How do you pick a great book? I almost always ask for assistance from employees of a bookstore. They are super helpful, especially at independent book stores like Little Shop of Stories, because they don’t just know the titles – they know the meat of the book.

COURTNEY IRENE CONROY

Director of Events and Publicity A Cappella Books

What upcoming titles should people be sure to read? Matthew Thomas’ upcoming title, “We Are Not Ourselves,” is a sprawling debut about a young IrishAmerican girl’s coming of age. I’m also really looking forward to Lena Dunham’s “Not That Kind of Girl” and to “Bad Feminist” by Roxane Gay. Which lesser-known authors should people get to know? Lesser-known authors, Atlanta edition: Josh Russell and Blake Butler. Start with Russell’s “A True History of the Captivation, Transport to Strange Lands, and Deliverance of Hannah Guttentag: A Novel” and Butler’s “Nothing: A Memoir of Insomnia.” What book format do you prefer to read? Recently, I’ve been listening to some things on tape, especially at the gym. I listened to Walter Kirn’s “Blood Will Out,” chillingly narrated by Stephen Bell Davies, and it was excellent. How can someone pick a winner in the bookstore? Ask one of the employees for the best or the worst book they’ve been reading. If a book is disliked enough to inspire invective, there might be something to it. Just don’t go by book jacket design. This only works with wine labels.

Healthy and tasty ideas to nourish your body

Summer Gazpacho Gazpacho is basically a liquid salad consisting of finely diced, super fresh vegetables and tomato juice served as a cold soup. Made with vine-ripe tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, garlic, olive oil and a splash of good vinegar, this delicious soup has been popular for centuries. Ingredients: 5 tomatoes, diced 3 cups tomato juice, ice cold 2 cloves garlic, minced ½ red onion, diced 1 large cucumber, diced 1 bell pepper, diced 1 zucchini, diced (optional)

1 tbsp. sugar 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar ¾ tsp. smoked paprika ½ tsp. ground cumin ¼ tsp. cayenne pepper (optional) Salt and black pepper to taste Extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling Sour cream (optional) Fresh croutons (optional) Method: In a food processor or blender, combine the minced garlic with half the red onion, half the cucumber, half

the tomato, half the zucchini, half the celery, half the tomato juice, olive oil, red wine vinegar, sugar, spices, herbs of your choosing and a dash of salt. Pulse until all ingredients are blended well and mixture has a speckled, colorful texture. Pour into a large bowl and add the rest of the tomato juice. Add the remaining onion, cucumber, tomato, zucchini and celery. Stir and check seasonings, adding salt if needed. Chill soup for several hours before serving, or add a few ice cubes to chill more quickly. Ladle into a bowl and garnish with your favorite topping, such as a dollop of sour cream, croutons, chopped cilantro, a sliver of fresh avocado or even a scoop of fresh crab meat. Serve with slices of grilled bread. – Courtesy of Atlanta food blogger Denise Romeo of We Like To Cook!, www.welike2cook.com

Hired Guns

Year of the Dragon

Who needs to travel when new flavors and dishes can come right to you? At Gunshow, former “Top Chef” contestant Kevin Gillespie has invited lauded chefs from across the South to join his Atlanta kitchen as “Hired Guns.” On August 12 and 13, Chef Tandy Wilson from Nashville’s City House will cook alongside Gillespie, adding new dishes to Gunshow’s already creative menu. Chef Jeremiah Bacon from Charleston’s The MacIntosh and Oak Steakhouse will contribute his dishes on September 30 and October 1. In addition to tasting their food, diners can meet the visiting chefs and receive signed copies of their cookbooks. To attend, make reservations at Gunshow as usual.

No MSG here! With the new restaurant arrival Doc Chey’s Dragon Bowl, “Chinese take-out night” is now a healthy option for you and your family. The restaurant offers bowls piled high with seasonal vegetables and adventurous ingredients inspired by Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese flavors. The restaurant won’t serve fountain drinks, instead opting for organic iced teas and craft sodas sweetened with cane sugar, rather than corn syrup. What’s more, Dragon Bowl will minimize food waste by focusing on seasonal, local ingredients and will use take-out packaging that is 100 percent recyclable and even compostable. Head to Emory Village for a meal that can be healthy for both you and the earth.

Explore new ways to get more out of life

Oprah’s The Life You Want Weekend – Sept. 5 - 6 The Inspiration “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” If anyone is qualified to talk about living the life of your dreams, it’s Oprah Winfrey, who rose from a life of poverty to a life that influences millions. These words of wisdom are just a snippet of the inspiration she will bring to us next month when “Oprah’s The Life You Want Weekend” kicks off its national tour right here in Atlanta.

The Schedule The weekend begins when the Philips Arena doors open at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, September 5. The event itself runs from 7 to 9 p.m., during which time Oprah will personally share her story and her message. On Saturday, September 6, Oprah’s hand-picked speakers will take the stage from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including Iyanla Vanzant from OWN’s“Iyanla: Fix My Life,” “Eat, Pray, Love” author Elizabeth Gilbert and pastor Rob Bell. The Perks Premium tickets not only get you great seats, but they also include an event program. Premium Plus tickets secure you early access to shopping at the event, and if you want to go all out, you can purchase a VIP package that includes a meet and greet with Oprah and the opportunity to snap a photo with her. At any ticket level, you can order a healthy lunch to pick up on-site on Saturday. And if you’re traveling or want to enjoy the event as a staycation, check out the event’s website for a list of nearby hotels providing discounts.

Vegas in Atlanta

Chalk One Up for Fun

Skip the plane ticket to Vegas – just head over to Center Stage for a show worthy of the strip! On August 7, catch the 90-minute Clubesque event, which features a sassy night of modern cabaret. The performers include Clubesque creator Sunni Stephens, host Kyle Collins, burlesque artist Perle Noire and Lips Atlanta regular Gia Sunflowers. Book your tickets now for the 7:30 or 10 p.m. show, or catch the last night on September 4. Tickets start at $28.

Labor Day weekend invites plenty of outdoor enjoyment, even through something as simple as sidewalk chalk. Marietta’s annual Art in the Park festival now includes The Chalk Spot, an opportunity for kids to let their creativity go wild – within three square feet of pavement, that is. On August 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., registered children will receive a 30-count box of chalk, a goodie bag and the chance to create a chalk masterpiece that will remain on display through the rest of the weekend. The $10 registration price for the event benefits the art club at Marietta High School.

Atlanta doctors provide answers to your questions

a

Q

Is “broken heart syndrome” a real condition? Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as broken heart syndrome, is more common than most people realize. People with this syndrome see their doctor for chest pain, believing they might be having a heart attack. The pain, however, is not caused by clogged arteries. It is the result of severe emotional or psychological stress. Symptoms can also include shortness of breath, weakness and an irregular heartbeat. Things like the death of a loved one, a breakup, an upsetting medical diagnosis, financial difficulty, a car accident, major surgery or an asthma attack can be potential triggers.

What is a bio stem cell facial, and how does it work? Young skin functions efficiently by self-exfoliating, repairing damage and producing collagen and elastin. But each year, the metabolism of skin cells slows down and results in our skin showing the signs of aging, including dullness, irregular texture and wrinkles. A bio stem cell facial is a way to rejuvenate skin and encourage it to function like young skin, using proteins called stem cell cytokines. In a bio stem cell facial, skin cells are stimulated to produce a balance of pro-healing, anti-inflammatory, biochemical signals that promote healing and regeneration.

What procedures can make my eyes look better? With simple procedures like modern fractional laser or laser blepharoplasty, you can enhance your eyes by improving mild wrinkles, or you can simply “find” your eyes again by removing excess skin. Every millimeter of skin matters around the delicate eye tissues, so always use an expert. Also, procedures to correct heavy lids may be covered by insurance when those lids affect your side vision. Q

a

Q

Can certain medications affect my dental health? Your overall health and your oral health are closely linked. This means all of your health care providers need to know which medications you are taking. For example, patients taking bisphosphonates, a common class of osteoporosis medication, are at a higher risk of developing jawbone decay during a tooth extraction or implant, which can lead to jaw fractures or tooth loss. A bone turnover blood test can verify if you are at risk for complications. If you are at risk, you may need to delay procedures or take a drug “holiday” prior to surgery.

What is causing my cankles? Well-defined ankles yield a contour that is pleasing to the eye, and lack of this desirable contour is sometimes called “cankles.” This can be caused by excess subcutaneous fat in the lower calf and around the ankles. Another cause is swelling from lymphedema or venous insufficiency. Cankles can also manifest due to heart, kidney or endocrine problems. Lipedema is yet another cause of cankles. Depending on the cause, you can shed excess pounds, tone up the calf muscles, have a fat-removal procedure such as liposuction or seek proper treatment for swelling from a qualified physician.

Empowering girls through physical activity

A

By Taylor Arnold dolescence is a critical time when many girls’ activity levels fall significantly or disappear altogether. So it is important that parents, coaches and other adults encourage girls to stay active as they transition from childhood to adulthood. Active girls tend to have

higher self-esteem and self-confidence and healthier body images than girls who are not active. What’s more, girls who are physically active tend to perform better on standardized tests, get higher grades and have higher aspirations after high school. All things considered, sports and physical fitness help set the framework for a happy, healthy and successful generation of women.

Start Them Young Fitness habits form early, so encouraging girls to engage in regular physical activity can help them for the rest of their lives. Lea Rolfes, executive director of Girls on the Run of Atlanta, says, “Participation in physical activity at an early age is essential because it is an important determinant of long-term physical activity maintenance. Studies show if a girl does not participate in sports or physical activity by the time she is 10 years old, there is only a 10 percent chance she’s likely to exercise when she is 25.”

Lacey King (a.k.a. Choke Cherry) of the Atlanta Rollergirls, agrees. “The best thing we can do as members of society is to help young girls get involved and encourage them to feel empowered by sports,” she says, which the Atlanta Rollergirls do through their 7 to 17-year-old group, the Atlanta Derby Brats. Jackie Cannizzo, tournament director for the Esther Cannizzo Junior Golf Foundation, supports this as well. She says, “If you can catch girls at a young age and get them engaged in sports, they will be better for it in general.”

Break Out of the “Girl Box” Keeping young girls interested in sports and fitness may be easier said than done, though. At Girls on the Run, Rolfes sees many girls get trapped in what she calls the “girl box.” “It’s a place where they’re torn between who they know they are and what our culture says they should be,” she explains. “It’s a place of questioning their body image and experiencing low self-esteem and negative selftalk. Parents and educators see the girl box being imposed at an increasingly early age, and our mission is to reverse that trend. Our curriculum starts with girls in the third grade, because girls at this age are most receptive to this message. One of the most powerful tools to get out of the girl box is knowing that there are other girls who feel the same way.”

The girl box is a place where girls are torn “between who they know they are and what our culture says they should be.”

She also remains committed to changing the gendered stereotypes that influence the extent to which girls participate in physical activity. “Popularity has different standards for boys and girls; adolescent boys’ popularity depends on their physical ability, while adolescent girls’ popularity depends on a complex mix of attributes such as physical appearance, material possessions and boyfriends,” she says. “Female athletes are much more likely to be portrayed in ways that highlight their physical appearance instead of their athletic competence. The objectification of girls and young women, including female athletes, continues to influence girls’ self-esteem, body image and valuation of physical activity.” These portrayals also perpetuate the mistaken belief that girls can’t keep up with boys. “People think women can’t play at the same level or intensity, which is absolutely not true,” says Marq Williams, owner and head coach of the Atlanta Heartbreakers, a women’s football team. “We have to encourage females because the more they participate in sports, the more people will give them the respect and understanding they deserve. We need to stop saying, ‘This is a man’s sport.’” Donnovant Dahunsi has been coaching for nearly 15 years, and he currently serves as the middle school track and field program coodinator for Atlanta Public Schools. He agrees that female athletes have just as much of a love for sports as their male counterparts. But often, Dahunsi says, “Many girls come to me not really knowing where or how they fit into the team,” but under careful www.bestselfatlanta.com

coaching, he says, it’s not uncommon for those girls to excel and become team leaders.

Advice from A Fit Girl Caroline Peters, manager at local retailer High Country Outfitters, recounts her fitness journey and gives recommendations to other young women. What activities did you participate in during middle school and high school? I was a competitive athlete who played soccer and indoor volleyball. What support helped you stay active during those years? My dad has always pushed me to try sports and keep me active, whether it was through sports or simply doing things outside. He would literally surprise me by driving me to tryouts for soccer teams. Outside of sports, my dad has been taking me backpacking and camping with my brother since I was a little girl.

Riding Lessons in Vinings GA

What activities do you enjoy outside of traditional competitive sports? Yoga in particular keeps me centered and grounded. I also trail run, bike, climb and am always excited to try something new. That’s how I first got into SUP yoga [pictured below]; I had just finished yoga school, and the deck pad on my board reminded me of a yoga mat. What advice do you have for a young girl looking for an activity she really loves? Try it all! Step out of your comfort zone! New challenges make you stronger.

Active Alternatives Traditional sports like soccer, basketball, softball and even football might be right for some girls, but many just aren’t into it. Instead of ending the search there, girls should seek out alternatives. Prissy Tomboy Athletics, a local sportswear and accessory line dedicated to supporting active girls, encourages participants to try all sorts of activities. Founder Tracey Pearson says, “We’re here to show these girls that there are so many alternative activites out there that can be just as fun and enduring [as sports]. From paddleboarding, dancing and yoga to kickboxing and cycling, there really is something for everyone.” And staying active doesn’t have to be limited to after-school commitments, either – instead, physical activity should have a permanent place in the school day as well. Atlanta, points out, “Physically active students often do better on standardized tests, have lower rates of absenteeism and have fewer discipline problems.” Colbert recommends that schools encourage walking or biking to school and include breaks in their schedules. In P.E. classes, even slight adjustments in the focus of the activity can make a difference in how girls respond to it. By emphasizing fun, choice and inclusiveness, schools have a better chance of keeping girls involved. “Think dance parties, double dutch or active games,” Colbert says. “Games like dodgeball that eliminate players result in most of the group sitting while a select few are active.” By comparison, “Dancing, group walks and yoga encourage everyone to be active the whole time.”

From paddleboarding, “ dancing and yoga to kickboxing and cycling, there really is something for everyone.

– Tracey Pearson, Prissy Tomboy Athletics In addition to support from schools, there are many free and low-cost sports and physical activity programs for girls. “P.E. teachers, school nurses and parks and recreation departments can all be good resources for finding programs in local communities,” Colbert says, as well as familiar institutions like the YMCA. And if parents are looking for more information on how to get and keep their families active, the “Fun Moves” section of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s Strong4Life website is a great resource to help parents through each step.

Say hello to your healthy home.

The Faces of Female Fitness Despite a variety of resources available, our society still lacks active role models for girls. The most visible and successful professional athletes and sports teams are overwhelmingly male. “As a society, we do not prioritize athleticism as highly for girls as we do for boys,” Colbert says. “Being a good role model for activity means talking positively about physical activity and doing activities with girls; parents and adults who work with girls can fill this void by being the role models that girls need.” It’s also important to consider adolescent girls’ developing self-esteem. “Ages 12 to 16 are most difficult for girls in general,” Cannizzo says. “They need to find the right program or activity so there is a sense of success in that critical time. Also, male coaches can be uncomfortable for girls. In our www.bestselfatlanta.com

profession, golf is a very male-dominated sport, which is why we need more female role models and coaches.” Fortunately, women like Haley Chura, Atlanta’s own professional triathlete competitor, are removing these roadblocks. “Girls have to work a bit harder to find strong female role models, but they’re out there,” she says. “Right now young women like gold medalist swimmers Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin, and runner Mary Cain are rewriting the record books and showcasing women’s athletics like never before. These teenage women are deserving of rock star admiration!”

And Chura is living proof that sports are an essential part of professional success. “Athletics have taken me to foreign countries, tropical islands and even to the White House to meet the President of the United States. I got my first job because of sports, and I feel better about myself both physically and mentally after every workout. There is truly no limit to what sports can teach you, where they can take you and who you might meet.”

Cannizzo encourages girls to look at sports as part of their journey in life. “There are so many valuable lessons to learn from being involved in sports that you can carry into your profession or being a parent,” she says. “From a business standpoint, it helps girls be better teammates, co-workers, and feel better in general. You learn discipline, hard work and time management – there is no downside to being involved in sports.” The Atlanta Rollergirls have a similar philosophy. “As a member of the league, we are also asked to take on a job, so we don’t only skate, but we run the business,” King says. “I’m currently ARG’s head of marketing and serve on the board of directors. selfie PHOTO CONTEST First Place Jacki and Fizzle Society of Humane Friends of Georgia Jacki and Fizzle came in first place with an impressive 1,398 votes in this year’s contest. Fizzle enjoys playing fetch with tennis balls and making Jacki laugh with his funny facial expressions. Jacki chose the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia as the pet charity to receive her first place prize money of $250. SOHFGA is a nonprofit organization that has been serving Gwinnett County for 16 years. The organization’s Lawrenceville shelter accepts cats and dogs from animal control, from owners who are no longer able to properly care for their pets and from off the streets. SOHFGA works hard to find perfect matches for each family and animal they work with, and they also help through other initiatives such as such as Jail Dogs, the SOHFGA Spay and Neuter Clinic and the Gwinnett County Pet Project (GCPP). The GCPP reaches out to communities with limited access to veterinary care and provides free or subsidized services to help keep their pets healthy and safe with vaccinations, supplies and spaying and neutering. SOHFGA is supported solely by donations and adoptions, which take place regularly at the Petco on Highway 124 in Snellville. Details: www.sohfga.com

Fix Georgia Pets

When Marla came to Widdi as a foster pup, Widdi quickly fell in love and decided to adopt Marla “furever!” Marla is full of energy, and her favorite thing to do is walk on her mom’s treadmill. Widdi chose Southern Animal Rescue as the pet charity to receive her second place prize money of $150. Founded in 2008, Southern Animal Rescue helps rescue and rehome abused, neglected and homeless cats and dogs in the Atlanta area. One of SAR’s primary initiatives is to reduce the number of feral cats and kittens in the area through a trap, neuter and return program. SAR is a small organization without a physical shelter to temporarily house their rescued animals, so they rely on a network of foster parents to open their homes to these pets. SAR supports their foster parents by taking care of veterinary visits and the search for a permanent home.

Named after the former Chicago Bull, Pippen tries to make everyone he meets a cat person, and Lauren fell in love with him the second they met. He enjoys meeting new people, getting Lauren to pet him and snack time with his canine pals. Lauren chose Fix Georgia Pets as the pet charity to receive her third place prize money of $100. Fix Georgia Pets’ motto is “Together, we can put an end to pet overpopulation in Georgia,” which they are achieving through low-cost spay and neuter clinics, mobile units and the pro-bono services of private practice veterinarians. Fix Georgia Pets puts an emphasis on spaying and neutering because not only will these measures help reduce the numbers of homeless or euthanized pets, but fixed pets are said to be less aggressive, which lowers the risk of bites, attacks and the spread of disease. Fix Georgia Pets has a team of volunteers called the FGP Ambassadors who help educate the community about the importance of animal safety.

Did You Know? Testosterone deficiency, known as “Low T,” is a very common medical condition which affects approximately 1 in 500 males. This condition occurs when the sex glands fail to produce enough of the hormone testosterone. In males, testosterone plays an important role in the maintenance of sex drive, fertility, and bone health. “Low T” may result from a disorder of the sex glands or of the pituitary gland (a small organ located below the brain). It may be congenital (present at birth) or acquired as the result of aging, disease, drugs, or other factors. Symptoms of “Low T” include erectile dysfunction, decreased sexual desire, fatigue and weakness, depression, infertility, loss of body and facial hair, and osteoporosis. A blood test and review of symptoms are used to diagnosis “Low T.” Testosterone replacement therapy is available in many forms to treat “Low T.” Men receiving treatment often experience an increase in energy, sex drive, and sense of well-being.

Second Opinions

After a cancer diagnosis, the conversation is just beginning By Sarah K. Ricciardelli

T

here are few conversations more ground shaking than receiving a cancer diagnosis. According to the American Cancer Society, that’s a conversation more than one million people have each year with their doctor. And while your current care provider may have a treatment plan and course of action in mind, you may still have lingering questions: Is this my best option? Who else should I reach out to about this? Should I get a second opinion? It’s not uncommon to want additional information or a second opinion regarding your diagnosis and treatment. After all, this journey affects your health and your life, so you deserve to have all the information. Make sure you ask the right questions to the right providers in order to get the care you want and deserve.

Weight Loss Programs

When you initially received your diagnosis, you may have zoned out after the word “cancer.” Dr. Margarett Ellison, gynecologic oncologist with North Fulton Hospital, says that most patients hear nothing else after a cancer diagnosis is conveyed to them initially. That’s completely understandable – it takes some time to process such big news. Because of this, meeting with another doctor may simply be a chance to go over all the information again. Second opinions are also helpful in the case of particularly difficult diagnoses, such as when cancer is widespread. Dr. Michael Andrews, Chief Cancer Officer of WellStar’s Cancer Network, explains, “Sometimes you can look at the X-ray images of the body and tell very clearly what kind of cancer it is. For example, a large lung mass is a lung cancer, and it is clear. But other times when cancer is in different places in the body, where it started may be unclear.” In cases like that, oncologists need more than just X-ray information. They’ll examine the cancer under a microscope, and a second opinion can help to confirm the diagnosis. Dr. Eric Mininberg, a hematology oncologist from Piedmont Cancer Institute, adds, “A second opinion is often helpful in evaluation of a rare disease by an expert who specializes in that tumor type or when special surgery or interventions are required.”

Your health and peace of mind are top priorities, and a second opinion may be the way to achieve those goals. In addition to these medical reasons, a second opinion is also justified whenever you want one for peace of mind about the diagnosis itself or the treatment plan. So whether or not your cancer is rare or medically familiar, your comfort and confidence in the diagnosis and treatment plan are the best reasons to seek a second opinion. But you know what they say about too much of a good thing – though a second opinion is helpful, enlisting too much information can be overwhelming. By the time you’re on a fourth or fifth opinion, the consultations may become confusing or simply repetitious. For that reason, you may be better off seeking just one or two www.bestselfatlanta.com

A second opinion may do one of two things to the initial diagnosis: confirm it or change it. Though it is possible for different doctors to arrive at different conclusions, you probably shouldn’t expect radically different news from your second opinion. Dr. Mininberg says, “In general, the diagnosis is usually the same.” Dr. Patricia Thompson, a medical oncologist from Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, agrees. She notes, “At CTCA, it is rare that we arrive at a different diagnosis.”

Second opinions are widely “ accepted and highly recommended by most oncologists.”

Who to Ask Now that you know what to expect from a second opinion, make sure you set appointments with the appropriate provider or group of providers. Dr. Andrews says cancer care centers, academic settings and large referral centers offer the advantage of having many oncologists, which allows them to specialize in specific cancers. Dr. Srinivasiah agrees that opinions from a variety of specialists can be helpful in determining treatment plans. “There are certain situations, like with breast cancer,

than others and you may not want or be able to travel far away. Dr. Andrews points out that, thanks to a new partnership with WellStar and Mayo Clinic, “A lot of times the patients don’t have to leave our area. We can do a second opinion by loading all the information, X-rays and pathology into a system. Mayo Clinic will review it and give you an opinion within 48 hours.”

dietitians and fitness experts is extremely important. So important, in fact, that WellStar offers a dedicated support practice that includes cancer nutritionists, physical therapists, counselors, social workers and acupuncturists. All of these avenues can help a patient manage symptoms or side effects of treatment and feel as good as possible. Despite those benefits, it’s important not to let complementary methods prevent or conflict with a set treatment plan. Dr. Mininberg says, “In general, I encourage patients to do whatever they can to feel better during therapy as long as it does not interfere or take away from their treatment.” Just make sure to keep your medical team informed as you go along. “It is always a good idea to let the treating provider know what additional resources the patient is drawing from,” Dr. Ellison says. “Having complete transparency with all providers leads to optimal patient care and outcomes.”

Having the Talk When considering seeking a second opinion, some patients may feel that it’s unfair to their first doctor to ask someone else’s expertise, or they may just be uncomfortable with the conversation. But your doctor is a professional, and he or she understands that you deserve to advocate for your own care in the way you feel is best. Plus, any concerns about your doctor feeling slighted are probably unnecessary. Dr. Thompson says, “Second opinions are widely accepted and highly recommended by most oncologists.” Dr. Mininberg agrees, saying, “If a patient wants a second opinion, we do everything to honor their request.” So if you find yourself dealing with a cancer diagnosis, rest assured that your doctor recognizes that your health and peace of mind are the top priorities. A second opinion may be the way to achieve those goals, so don’t hesitate to start asking around.

One thing separates BEATY from BEAUTY, and that is YOU!

besthealth Bladder Health: Know the Signs By Eva Arkin, MD

Bladder dysfunction causes grief and aggravation to thousands of women each year. Avoid pain and discomfort by learning how to keep your bladder healthy.

Understand the Cause One of the most common reasons women visit a gynecologist or primary care doctor is for complaints of a urinary tract infection (UTI). Women’s bladders are frequently accosted by bacteria because the urethra (the tube from the bladder to the exterior) is quite short. It is very close to the vagina, which normally harbors many different bacteria. UTI or cystitis usually occurs as an ascending infection with bacteria “climbing up” the urinary tract.

Pay Attention to the Symptoms

The symptoms of UTI include a sense of urgency to go to the bathroom, extreme discomfort with urination and frequency of urination. However, not all symptoms of urinary frequency indicate a bladder infection. Many women have other bladder afflictions such as stress incontinence (the loss of urine due to coughing, sneezing or any other abdominal pressure) or overactive bladder (bladder spasms with involuntary loss of urine). Special bladder testing with a urologist can determine which bladder ailment you have.

Minimize Your Risk Women who do not drink enough water or empty their bladder enough are more prone to a UTI, since long storage time of urine in the bladder allows for bacteria to get into the bladder and start an infection. It can also occur after sex because of the spread of bacteria and the moisture involved. So to avoid a bladder infection, follow these few personal rules. First, try to avoid too many dark liquids like coffee or colas, and instead, drink plenty of water. Water will hydrate the bladder and make any toxic waste material be in a dilute solution and not a concentrated solution. Next, empty your bladder regularly and especially after sex. Finally, pay attention to your body. If you notice any symptoms, see a physician to have your urine checked and cultured so an infection can be caught early. www.bestselfatlanta.com

How to pick lenses with the protection you need By Kirk Smick, OD, FAAO In 2013, Atlanta’s beautiful summer weather exposed our eyes to 116 days of “very high” to “extreme” levels of UV, making our city the 20th highest UV city in America. A full day outside without protection from that UV radiation can cause immediate, temporary issues such as swollen or red eyes and hypersensitivity to light, telltale signs of sunburn of the eyes. And years of cumulative exposure can cause cancer of the eye or eyelid and accelerate cataracts, which affect nearly 22 million Americans ages 40 and older. Despite these dangers, many Americans don’t realize the harmful effects of UV light to your eyes. In fact, a recent report by The Vision Council found that only 22 percent of Atlanta adults report wearing sunglasses when they go outside, leaving eyes at risk for the long and short-term damage of UVrelated vision disorders. Also, only 47 percent of Atlantans know that UV can accelerate age-related macular degeneration and even fewer (35 percent) know it can lead to cataracts. The best option is to start wearing sunglasses that can protect your vision health during the course of your lifetime. When buying your next pair of shades, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

EXPERT CONNECT Dr. Cann welcomes chemically and environmentally sensitive patients, as well as patients who simply want their dental care to be in harmony with their healthy lifestyle.

Lasers to Regrow Hair? The FDA approved the use of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in 2007, specifically its ability to stimulate thinning hair to increase in density and thickness.

Your healthy lifestyle is our practice style. Buckhead dentist Roberta Cann has been mercury-free for more than 20 years. Carefully selecting techniques and dental materials, she has created a welcoming and respectful environment for your care, including:

• Biocompatible dental materials • Very low-radiation digital x-rays • Safe removal of mercury fillings • Perio Protect: Breakthrough non-invasive treatment for periodontal disease

A peer-reviewed study published in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology in January of 2014 proved the efficacy of LLLT in the treament of hair loss in men and women. Generally, over 80% of patients stop or significantly slow their hair loss, and over 50% of patients thickened their existing hair and improved its health and quality.

LLLT is able to stimulate and preserve hair Perio Protect Provider follicles in patients with various forms of alopecia (eg: hair loss). The laser light is absorbed by the cells of the hair follicles. The stimulation has been proven to increase the CannDentistry_4th.indd 1 blood flow to the scalp, among other positive effects.

What is a “Laser Cap”? A laser cap is a clinically proven, save and effective way to apply the treatment. I recommend, and offer to our patients, the Capillus Laser Cap. It has 244 laser diodes, compared to 12 on laser comb. These diodes are embedded in a polymer membrane “cap” that fits inside any baseball cap, making it portable and discreet. It has power of over 20 laser combs. It is completely painless and easy to use. A half hour every other day is recommended. LLLT is a proven therapy that, along with other nonsurgical options such as PRP with ACell, can increase the thickness and density without a surgical procedure, for both men and women.

3D Mammograms Reduce Callbacks I had my annual mammogram and I’ve been called back for additional testing. Should I be afraid that I have cancer? Many women who are called back almost always think the worst. Thankfully, mammography screening has built-in second opinions in the form of Computer Aided Detection (CAD). With CAD, images are analyzed by a computer to mark areas of suspected abnormality. Then, these areas are analyzed closely by the radiologist. Next the radiologist classifies the mammogram into normal or abnormal. Abnormal does not mean cancer. It only means that there is an area that requires additional imaging. Approximately 10% will be classified as abnormal and recalled for additional imaging. Only a few of those recalled will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The addition of 3-D imaging lowers the recall rate. The interpretation of mammograms is difficult because of the random distribution of tissue in the breasts. Reading a mammogram is similar to looking for an abnormality in a tree with only 2 pictures of the tree. Some women have more fatty tissue and tumors will stand out similar to a lone green leaf on a bare tree in winter. Other women have more glandular and fibrous tissue and locating an abnormality is similar to looking for a brown leaf in a tree full of green leaves. The addition of 3-D imaging improves the radiologist’s ability to find abnormalities. The radiologist looks at many images searching for signs of cancer. With most screening mammograms, there are only two projections of each breast provided by the mammographic technologist. Differences in tissue patterns between the right and left breast, distortions in the tissue patterns, masses, clusters of small calcifications, skin thickening and changes over time may require further evaluation. Once an abnormality is confirmed with additional mammographic views, most of the time it cannot be concluded that there is cancer based on the mammogram alone because cancers and noncancerous growth can look the same on mammography. Ultrasound is used to determine if a mass is cystic or solid. If a simple cyst can be verified by ultrasound, no further testing is done. Mixed masses or solid masses require follow-up or biopsy. New advanced ultrasound technology

Early detection using the latest technology. We offer BRCA cancer screening testing. Ask us about it. called Elastography helps to determine if a solid mass should be biopsied or followed. If a biopsy is recommended, remember 7080% of breast biopsies turn out to be benign. If you are called back after your regular screening mammogram, it is important to choose a mammographer who is current on the latest technology available, experienced in detecting even the slightest abnormality and is open to discussing your options. Have your questions ready for the radiologist and leave your appointment feeling assured that you are making the right decisions.

A Lifeline for Atlanta Pets

By Lizzy Stroud

At the end of “The Price is Right,” Bob Barker always reminded viewers, “Have your pet spayed or neutered!” LifeLine Animal Project knows that pet homelessness and overpopulation can definitely be helped in that way, but also in many others. From access to affordable spay and neuter procedures, to efficiently spreading the word about adoptable pets, to supporting owners who may be struggling, LifeLine has created programs to help pets in as many ways as possible. LifeLine’s CEO Rebecca Guinn says, “Our overarching goal is pretty simple: to keep as many animals out of the shelters as possible and, if they do end up in our care, to get them released to good homes.” The first approach to achieving those goals is their Skip McPheeters (LifeLine board member) Lara Hudson (director of Fulton County Animal Services) and Linda spay and neuter clinics. Since opening their first Johnson (a representative from Fulton County Commissioner’s office) visit with Cheetoh and Cheddar in the clinic in 2005, LifeLine has opened a second spay new free-roaming cat adoption room at the Fulton County shelter. and neuter clinic as well as other facilities to aid abandoned cats and dogs. Dara Torres

my

t s e B f sel

As an Olympic swimmer and busy mom, Dara Torres knows the value of time. She has spent many hours in the pool winning medals for the U.S. and raising her similarly sporty daughter. Now retired from competitive swimming, Torres uses her passions for swimming and motherhood to bring awareness to the time-sensitive illness meningococcal meningitis. This disease can kill an otherwise healthy teen in less than 24 hours. As a mom herself, Torres wants to help other moms protect their kids as best they can, so on behalf of the Voices of Meningitis campaign, she travels the country swimming 24 laps to represent those critical 24 hours of the disease. “Talk to your health care provider about it,” she advises, “or go to the website www.voicesofmeningitis.org. It has everything on there about what it is, the causes, how you can contract it and how you can prevent it.” Her activism recently brought her to Atlanta’s Mountain View Aquatic Center to swim and to encourage teens and young adults to get vaccinated. This initiative follows Torres’ record-breaking swimming career, during which she became the first female Olympic swimmer to compete past the age of 40. While she was in town, Best Self caught up with her to learn more about her incredible accomplishments, family life and favorite parts of visiting Atlanta.

What is the best thing you learned about yourself since turning 40?

I think that the biggest thing is not to put an age limit on your dreams. There’s this myth that we have to stop doing certain things as we age, and that’s what it is – a myth. Personally for me, I competed in the Olympics at 41 years old and went to trials at 45. No one is going to tell me I’m too old to do something unless my body is telling me.

What do you see as your greatest accomplishment?

Winning medals is incomparable to having a child, so I would have to say my daughter. Professionally, I would not say a specific race or the Olympics, but just being able to enjoy the sport and be in it for as long as I have. I have just always loved swimming and the competition.

How do you stay motivated to achieve such impressive accomplishments?

I am a very goal-oriented person. So when I set goals, I have to reach those goals. That’s what really motivates me.

What was it like when your daughter came along in 2006?

It wasn’t easy at first. I had to figure out how to balance being the best mom I could be and doing what I love. So I was really inspired by working parents, both male and female. It wasn’t easy, but I was very lucky to find a balance that worked both for my daughter and me.

Does your daughter love swimming as much as you do?

She swims two days a week and also does lacrosse and dance. She just turned 8, so I don’t want to tire her out! When she gets to be a little older, then she can decide what she wants to do, but right now she seems to be enjoying it.

What was it like to retire from swimming?

Photo courtesy of the Voices of Meningitis campaign

When you’re away from the sport you’ve been involved with your whole life, you miss it and you miss the competition. I think that’s why I’ve retired a couple of times and got right back into it – because of my love for the sport. [Retirement] is much different this time. I don’t think my body can handle the rigorous training like I did. And I am really enjoying being home and being on my own and doing my speaking engagements. It’s just different now, but I’m content.

Other than swimming, what is your favorite workout? I’ve been taking boxing lately. Get your aggressions out on the bag!

What is your favorite way to relax?

Exercise is a big stress reliever, but I’d have to say massage. I love massages.

What is your favorite movie? Chariots of Fire.

What are your favorite parts of visiting Atlanta?

I love the shopping around Buckhead, and I love the little boutique shopping too. It is just a beautiful city, and I love coming to visit.
