Meet Our Team of Aesthetic Dentists

What Does “Best Self” Mean? When Best Self Atlanta launched a decade ago, I would tell people, “I’m starting a new magazine and it’s going to be called Best Self.” It was amazing to me to hear them say, “What does that mean?” Fast forward 10 years to today, you’ll often hear the everyday person talk about being their best self and living their best life. These concepts are used in casual conversation, marketing, movies (think “Silver Linings Playbook”), and beyond.

Celebrating her 30th year in dentistry, Dr. Debra Gray King is a pioneer in cosmetic dentistry. She is one of less than 76 dentists worldwide to be an Accredited Fellow, which is the highest level of competence recognized by the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). She has been featured on The Doctors, Extreme Makeover, The Wall Street Journal, and various media outlets.

What does it really mean to be your best self or live your best life, though? It is not a static thing. It is an active journey that involves self-care, self-love, and constant learning. It is an ability to find your personal light when everything around you seems dark, all while helping to lift up others as you go along your journey.

When I reflect on the last 10 years, I am most proud of the community of like-minded Atlantans who have organically connected, supported, and celebrated each other as a result of Best Self Atlanta. The goal of this magazine is to showcase the powerful inner beauty within all of us and to inspire others. I am proud that our pages have served to lift up those who have embarked on the journey to become their best selves. And I’m appreciative of the people who are paving the way for others to do so too.

My Best List Casi Cielo — This new spot is a total treasure in Sandy Springs and we were lucky enough to host our 2019 Over 40 & Fabulous! Cover Reveal Party there. The restaurant’s high-quality, authentic artisan Mexican cuisine is an experience you don’t want to miss. A must-try is the delicious La Llorona margarita. It is made with Patrón Reposado, jalapeño juice, agave, lime juice, and homemade chile powder on the rim. https://casicieloatl.com Marcello’s Pizzeria•Trattoria•Drinks — This longtime Buckhead gem moved to a new location (still in the Tuxedo Festival shopping center) a few years ago. Its expanded space features Old-World décor, a cozy bar, and an inviting atmosphere. If you haven’t been, you need to go to the family-run Marcello’s for delicious bona fide Italian fare. The Greek salad and meatballs are my favorite menu items. https://facebook.com/marcellos-155251304542494 On Cloud shoes — These are the most comfortable athletic shoes I have ever put on my feet. You can easily slip them on and they are light as a feather. Check them out at abbadabba’s. https://coolshoes.com

“The ability to help our patients regain their confidence and discover the best version of themselves is a reward like no other. A beautiful smile can improve your appearance and may even change your life. from the editor Give It Up For The Guys Today, the impact of true women’s empowerment can be seen everywhere. We are shattering glass ceilings, putting our self-care first, raising our voices when we are wronged, lifting up fellow women around us, and doing so much more (although that isn’t new). And while we still have strides to make, we’ve definitely come a long way from where we were decades ago.

In all of the female frenzy, it can be easy to forget the men that have always done great things to not only support the women around them, but their community as a whole. This is why I love our Annual Men’s Issue. It is our chance to highlight these standout guys—and these pages are packed with them! From a Paralympian and a health advocate to nonprofit heroes, turn to page 39 to meet nine men who are making a difference in Atlanta. If those stories aren’t inspiring enough, our article on the Bricks for Bali fundraiser (p.65) will warm your heart. Launched by Atlanta fitness icon, Tony de Leede, and his wife, Sue, the campaign aims to build a small hospital in a rural area of the Indonesian island, Bali. The facility will bring critical health services to one of the poorest populations in the world. The heartwarming continues with our My Best Self profile on James A. Bailey. This retired Army nurse and massage therapist is one of the countless number of men around the country who have taken on the role of primary caregiver for someone they love. On page 70, the Decatur resident discusses what putting the needs of others before your own looks like on an everyday basis. So, if you know an extraordinary man, be sure to thank him for the positive impact he has on your life and on others. No matter who we are, we could all use support, encouragement, and gratitude. And speaking of those who make an impact, our Best of 2019 contest is around the corner. We want to hear about the businesses and professionals that you loved this year! Visit www.bestselfatlanta.com to learn more about our newly revamped categories and contest details.

The new eatery will offer sashimi, nigiri, rice bowls, and more. With Michael Chanthavong (the executive chef of Sukoshi Charlotte and O-Ku Charlotte) at the helm, he’ll use his expertise to develop the menu for Sukoshi Atlanta. Here, he shares an easy recipe for a teriyaki-style chicken bowl.

For sauce blend • 1 tablespoon soy sauce • 1 tablespoon sugar • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • Salt to taste DIRECTIONS Salt and pepper chicken breast and dust with cornstarch. Heat a nonstick

pan over medium heat and lightly coat with oil or butter. Sear chicken on both sides, an estimated 6 minutes per side, until the internal temperature exceeds 165 F. Wash and cut vegetables to an even size so that they can cook at an equal temperature throughout. Add more if you’d like! In a separate saucepan over high heat, lightly coat with oil or butter and heat until the pan is smoking. Turn off the heat and pour in vegetables. With the vegetables in the pan, turn heat to medium-high. Sauté for a few minutes and set them aside.

For the sauce In a saucepan over medium heat, add sugar and soy. Stir occasionally until it is simmering. Turning the heat to low, pour in the lemon juice, and stir for 1 to 2 minutes. Turn off heat and let sauce cool. Pour sauce into the pan with the chicken and toss for a few seconds. Add the vegetables and toss. Serve over rice or greens. Boardroom Salon for Men’s team of stylists and barbers share contemporary haircut ideas for men. The quiff still reigns. This classic style features a scissor-cut flow on top and clipper fades on the sides. For men with mediumlength hair, letting the hair fall naturally is the latest easy-to-achieve look. Consider an angular fringe to add flair. Keep it simple with a clean fade. This cut is perfect for thick and textured hair.

Alluring Eyelashes We know that eyelashes are big in the beauty world—actually, they’ve been big. The Lash Brat brand, which specializes in cruelty-free mink and synthetic eyelashes, was founded in 2012 when Atlanta-based owner Cyrena Ndoma was frustrated by the lack of choices for strip lashes. This was before a lash bar was on every corner, and definitely before the masses knew about mink lashes! While working as a software engineer, Ndoma found a manufacturer to create the lashes she designed. Today, the styles she offers vary from soft and natural to bam! Some pairs cost less than $10. The most expensive pair is $29 and can be used 25 times with proper care. Plus, on the brand’s website, you can learn how to apply and remove them properly.

The No-Surgery Facelift Q

What is TransFirm®?

A

TransFirm® is a nonsurgical, minimally invasive treatment process. This comprehensive approach to facial restoration harnesses the power of nitrogen plasma.

BEFORE

AFTER

Q

Why is TransFirm® unique?

A

Unlike a traditional surgical facelift, the TransFirm® process stimulates collagen and elastin production. Collagen and elastin fibers are naturally produced by your body to provide skin with structure and support, but their production naturally declines over time. The combination of treatments may be used to enhance facial or jawline contours, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, target and destroy stubborn pockets of facial fat, and tighten loose skin.

Q

What can I expect from the treatment process?

A

While there may be some discomfort associated with treatment, numbing creams are utilized to promote your comfort. Although there is minimal downtime, you should be able to resume your normal daily activities! However, you may experience some bruising or general discomfort in the treatment area. Results achieved will vary for each person and their specific concerns. But, most people enjoy initial results within a few weeks, and results gradually improve as your body produces new collagen and elastin.

Atlanta-based orthopedic surgeon and chief of the Northside Hospital Sports Medicine Network, Vonda Wright, MD, notes to pay attention to your biomechanical efficiency when selecting a running shoe. “Pronation is your body’s response to your foot hitting the ground. Done correctly, it allows your feet to absorb shock. Overpronation, which is when the arch of the foot collapses excessively downward or inward as the VONDA WRIGHT, MD foot lands, can cause a range of injuries. If you tend toward overpronation when you run, opt for a firmer shoe to keep your foot in a more neutral position,” says Dr. Wright.

2019 Partners in Health Back to School: How Men Can Boost Their Family’s Health By Scott D. Miller, MD

Having a strong family and social network makes our lives more enjoyable and fulfilling. But did you know that having these meaningful connections can lead to a healthier and longer life? For instance, men with satisfying marriages and marital-type relationships have a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease. In fact, parenthood—with all of its trials and tribulations—is linked to longevity. Now that school is back in session, here is some homework for a healthier family.

First period—Math

We are often overly optimistic when we estimate our daily accomplishments. Here are some tips for looking at the eye-opening numbers: • Identify empty calories, such as those in beverages • Track exercise and other activity—make it a family game or competition (for example, number of goal-reaching days each week) • Record number of hours of sleep • Schedule enough time for a morning routine that accommodates breakfast, a stress-free departure, and a timely commute

Second period—Biology

Good eating habits, regular exercise, and a full night’s rest are the foundation to keeping the human machine running smoothly. Here are some other tips to ace your health exam: • Handwashing between every activity • Good dental hygiene (reduces the risk of heart disease, especially when started early in life) • Minimize antibiotic use, which can cause resistant bacteria to develop (most upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses rather than bacteria) • Recognize declining emotional health

Third Period—History

Your family health history can be essential for

early identification, prevention, and treatment of such conditions as heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, and depression. The initial signs of many common adult ailments often go unrecognized early in life. It is never too early to identify and thwart these health threats.

Fourth Period—Recess

You know what they say about all work and no play. Daily demands seem to be increasing for all age groups. Break the daily rut with new routines such as: • A family walk or other physical activity • Regular family mealtime—a lot can be accomplished around the dinner table • Dedicated weekend family activities

Look for my article on “What Women Can Do for Men’s Health” in the next issue. Scott D. Miller, MD, is the Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at WellStar North Fulton Hospital. He is a urologist with WellStar Urology in Roswell and has practiced in Atlanta for over 20 years. WellStar North Fulton Hospital offers the Know Your Heart Screening that can determine your risk of heart disease, stroke and other serious conditions. Call 770-956-STAR (7827) to learn more or schedule an appointment.

Fifth Period—English

Communication is the key to any relationship. Although teaching by example leaves a lasting impression, don’t be afraid to state the obvious or ask those difficult questions. We all can fall into bad habits and can sometimes use a loving reminder to put us back on track. Keeping an open dialogue also encourages your loved ones to communicate their needs.

Sixth Period—Physics

Accidents are the No. 1 cause of death early in life. Take these preventative measures: • Seat belts for everyone in the vehicle • Helmets not only while riding a bicycle, scooter, or motorcycle, but also while roller skating, climbing, or engaging in other potentially risky sporting or other activities. • Life vests during all water sports • No alcohol consumption during any of the above (loving reminders are never too frequent) • All family members should carry emergency contact numbers

Math Biology History Recess English Physics

You are now ready for your final exam. No. 2 pencil not needed. Here’s to a future of straight A’s when it comes to a healthy family.

Back-to-School Tips for Kids with Digestive Conditions By Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates

S

tarting a new school year can bring lots of excitement to children, but for those with chronic gastrointestinal (GI) issues like Crohn’s disease, it can also trigger anxiety and stress. Embarrassing symptoms can sometimes occur without warning. As a parent, here are some tips to help make your child’s back-toschool experience a little smoother.

Tip #1: Notify Teachers and Administration

Identify any special needs your child may have during the school day and share these with your child’s teacher. These may include dietary restrictions, additional bathroom breaks, or frequent check-ins with the nurse.

Tip #2: Prepare an Accident Kit

When it hurts to go... Our digestive experts can help relieve constipation and other tummy troubles.

Lessen the stress of an occasional accident by preparing a kit for your child to keep in his or her locker or cubby. Include items such as a change of clothes, underwear, flushable wipes, a discreet air freshener, and plastic bags for soiled clothes.

Tip #3: Be Supportive

As you know, how you react to your child’s symptoms influences the way he or she feels about his or her condition. It is important to offer a sense of understanding and support, especially after experiencing an episode at school. The Pediatric and Adolescent Division of Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates helps children and their parents navigate all types of digestive conditions and concerns. 2019 Partners in Health Delivering Integrated Solutions for Weight Loss & Overall Health By Michael D. Williams, MD, FACS & Brendon Curtis, MD

T

he condition of being overweight has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that two out of three Americans are overweight to varying degrees. Consequently, weight loss is an issue that many people struggle with. Becoming overweight may be multifactorial. This includes a complex interaction between genetics, environmental factors, a high-calorie diet, reduced physical activities, stress, poor coping mechanisms, and poor sleeping habits. Excess weight can negatively impact every organ system in your body and may eventually lead to an early death. These ill effects can be manifested in common diseases and issues such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke and heart attack, fatty liver disease, gallstones, and increased risk of many cancers. One can therefore appreciate that weight loss and the maintenance of an overall healthy lifestyle is critical and requires a multidisciplinary approach. In our practice, a major focus is assisting patients in their weight loss journey and helping them maintain a healthy lifestyle. We incorporate a multidisciplinary approach in the weight loss options available to our patients. Treatment options include the use of pharmacological agents such as phentermine, Qsymia, BELVIQ, CONTRAVE, and Saxenda, along with close clinical follow up. Pharmaceuticals may be combined with noninvasive procedures such as the intragastric balloon. This is an office-based procedure with anesthesia for the patient’s safety and comfort. The balloon remains in place for six months. During this time, patients undergo an intense period of medical supervision and lifestyle coaching. Our physicians work in concert with psychologists, dietitians and fitness trainers

to accomplish the health goals of patients. These minimally invasive approaches lead to a quicker recovery, less pain, and improved cosmetic results. We are in the process of introducing a new endoscopic technique in which patients can undergo a procedure like the sleeve gastrectomy without the invasive component. For patients who may not have achieved their desired goals with lesser invasive means, or who may desire a more durable, ambitious approach, we offer the traditional laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and duodenal switch using laparoscopic and robotic techniques.

In our practice, we realize that weight loss is truly a lifelong journey. Your success and achievements are very important to us. Therefore, we stress the importance of long-term follow-up and monitoring. Through this process, we have enjoyed many lifelong relationships with our patients. At Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgery Institute, we are committed to the treatment of excess weight and continue to keep up with the current research, including manipulation of hormones, bacterial gut flora, new endoscopic devices, and medicines that enhance energy expenditure. We do this to continue offering patients excellent care using both surgical and nonsurgical cutting-edge technology options.

Find Your Center with Mind/Body Fitness at Windy Hill Athletic Club

What mind/body programs does Windy Hill Athletic Club offer? We currently offer Power Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Inversion/Handstand Class, Hatha Yoga, Beginner Yoga, Restorative classes, Yin Yoga, and 15-minute guided meditation classes. One-on-one yoga sessions are also available for those who want to learn more. Many of the teachers that work here have been recognized by the yoga community. We also have a beautiful Pilates studio and offer small group classes and one-on-one sessions. This department is a favorite among members.

We have some of the best teachers in Atlanta! Our teachers have done extensive research and training to give our members the very best experience. We offer mat classes along with Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, barrel, MOTR® classes, and one-on-one sessions. Also, be on the lookout for workshops and weekly classes on how to improve better range of motion.

What benefits can be gained through mind/body fitness? A healthy body needs both strength and flexibility. Just as bones crave space, muscles crave contraction. Working Pilates and yoga into your weekly routine can give you strength and also allow your bones and joints to thrive. With strength and flexibility comes protection against the breakdown of cartilage and bones, increased blood flow, immunity, lung health, and more. Plus, the release of dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin, and serotonin in the brain, leaves us happy and relaxed. This helps to reduce stress, which also benefits overall health and disease prevention.

Susan Walker, Mind/Body Program Director Susan has worked in the fitness industry since 2006 and has certifications and continuing education in personal coaching, group exercise, cycling, strength training, water aerobics, Pilates, and yoga. She is certified with Yoga Alliance RYT-300 and certified with Tim Miller of the Ashtanga Yoga Center, and holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology. She was a teacher at Kennesaw State University in the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education for six years. Her coursework covered wellness and health, functional movement, yoga, and Pilates. Susan found yoga and Pilates around 11 years ago. She noticed what a profound feeling and sense of calm she received after class. Susan eventually went through yoga and Pilates training and went deeper into her yoga practice. After dealing with a chronic back injury, she went on a quest for answers on anatomy and how to not only do yoga safely, but to also make it accessible for everyone. During this time, she worked with some of the most knowledgeable teachers of our time. Susan believes that yoga is accessible to all of us and can be a healing modality if we use it in that capacity.

Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy If you experience feelings of dizziness or the sensation that the room is spinning, you could be a candidate for vestibular therapy at BenchMark Physical Therapy. The inner ear controls the body’s balance. Many people endure debilitating inner-ear problems. Vertigo and fear of falling disrupt the ability to perform at work and at home. Fortunately, vestibular therapy can help. Conducted by physical therapists with specialized training, vestibular therapy is an exercise-based program designed to promote central nervous system compensation for inner ear deficits. This program helps patients learn to manage, or even heal, their conditions. BenchMark has over 40 vestibular-trained clinicians in the state. The inner ear’s three semicircular canals are filled with a thick fluid called endolymph. At the bottom of each canal are hair cells topped by crystals. As we turn our bodies, the crystals and hair cells shift accordingly, signaling to the brain that we are, perhaps, turning left or right, or looking up or down. When those crystals become dislodged, they circulate unmoored in the endolymph and send incorrect information to the brain—signaling inaccurately that we are turning, or causing the impression that the body is spinning. These misimpressions can have serious consequences. Sufferers can be prone to falling. Drivers who look over a shoulder can lose equilibrium. Workers can have accidents on the job. The most common inner-ear conditions: • Meniere’s disease: Patients experience vertigo, often with hearing loss, pain, and the ringing in the ears known as tinnitus. It becomes more prevalent with age but can also occur across a life span. • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV): Patients feel a spinning sensation, even if they’re just turning their head. This spinning sensation can simply appear for no reason or be because of a blow to the head that dislodges those all-important crystals. Once BPPV happens, it is likelier to recur. • Vestibular hypofunction: In a properly functioning vestibular system, both sides operate in synchronization. When right and left ears fall out of sync, vestibular hypofunction results with feelings of spinning and vertigo. Hypofunction can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection, aging, reaction to medications, tumor, or brain injury.

Many patients also experience disruptive secondary symptoms, including nausea, blurry vision, and anxiety. Their fear of falling could cause them to become sedentary, exacerbating physical problems through inactivity. Anyone experiencing dizziness or vertigo should call a doctor because the same symptoms can signal a cerebellar stroke. Once a brain scan rules out a stroke, the patient will be referred to an ear, nose, and throat specialist who will test for vestibular system functioning. Vestibularcondition patients should ask their ENT specialist for vestibular rehabilitation referrals. While certain medications can help the dizziness and nausea of inner-ear problems, vestibular rehabilitation therapies target the causes, offering dramatic progress without drugs. Certified vestibular therapists are trained in specific exercises that minimize symptoms and restore patients to normal functioning. Available treatments include: • Canalith repositioning procedure • Gaze stabilization • Habituation Treatment sooner, rather than later can help minimize damage. The capable, highly trained therapists of BenchMark Physical Therapy are skilled at helping vestibular patients regain control and restore balance to their lives. BenchMark Rehab Partners is a family of physical therapists, occupational therapists, and hand therapists committed to inspiring and empowering people to reach their full potential. Its providers know that connecting with patients on a personal level helps to build trust. This trust is crucial in allowing patients and therapists to work together to make the best use of advanced certifications and refined techniques. A focus on proven methods and a handson approach help the BenchMark team achieve the goals of the patient in a safe and effective manner.

Risk Factors for Poor Dental Hygiene Diabetes Patients with poorly controlled diabetes are at a greater risk for dental problems. Because diabetes can reduce the blood supply to the gums, diabetic patients are more likely to have infections in their gums and the bones that hold their teeth in place. High blood sugar may also cause dry mouth and increase the patient’s number of cavities.

Smoking

Porcelain Veneers and EMAX Crowns Teeth Whitening Invisalign™ Dental Implants Periodontal Disease Therapy Botox™ & Juvederm™

Smoking can have a number of negative effects on dental health. Examples include increased loss of bone within the jaw, risk of leukoplakia (white patches inside the mouth), and risk of developing gum disease—a leading cause of tooth loss. Smoking can also delay the healing process following a tooth extraction, periodontal treatment, or oral surgery.

Unhealthy Diet/Sugar An unhealthy diet coupled with an increased intake of sugar may increase caries (cavities). Dental caries and obesity are strongly linked due to common dietary risk factors. Dental diseases and tooth loss have a considerable impact on self-esteem, ability to chew, nutrition and health in people of all ages.

2019 Partners in Health What Does “Concierge Medicine” Mean to Me As a Patient? By Paul E. Cox, MD, MS

Concierge medicine is a type of medical practice that offers an enhanced physician-patient relationship resulting in improved accessibility to medical information, treatment, and quality care.

I also have skilled estheticians who offer facials, laser, intense pulsated light (IPL), and radio-frequency microneedling treatments to keep you looking as good as you feel.

Why would I choose this type of practice? I have great medical insurance.

I have heard a lot about hormones lately. Are they really that important?

Primary care doctors that rely only on insurance or Medicare payments must see an average of four patients per hour or use physician extenders such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants in order to produce the revenue needed to keep the practice open. Therefore the patient [you] is no longer the primary concern of the practice. The payment system is the primary driving force behind this type of practice model.

How is the concierge model different?

The concierge model allows you to make a personal contribution to your health (usually less than the cost of three or four monthly car payments) that results in a more personal relationship with your physician. In this model, the physician-patient relationship again becomes the driver of medicine instead of insurance payments.

How is Vital Living Healthcare different from other concierge practices?

We are the only place in Atlanta where you can receive your annual physical and a facial in the same facility on the same day. We also provide you with a yearly blueprint/design for improved health based upon what you want to accomplish, what the available data (from advanced laboratory testing) tells us, and the time you have to devote to the plan. We also periodically revisit and revise the plan to make sure we take advantage of victories, while pivoting when circumstances change.

What services do you offer?

In addition to the personalized health blueprint/design, I am also well known for my skills with BOTOX® and fillers, and bioidentical hormone optimization.

Yes! There is sound scientific evidence that shows hormones greatly affect our mood, thoughts, sleep, energy levels, weight, lean muscle mass and athletic performance, and how we look. Hormone imbalance or deficiency commonly begins in our 40s and 50s and is frequently dismissed by most physicians as normal aging, depression or anxiety. So before you start that antidepressant, give up on your workouts, start the anxiety medication or give in to the ‘personal summer’ of hot flashes and night sweats, please get your hormones checked by me. There is a reason I am known as Atlanta’s ‘hormone whisperer.’

Is there anything else I need to know?

My practice is founded on the principles of listening, caring, and serving. My team will always strive to do those things for you no matter what. That’s why your first meeting with me is complimentary. I need to listen to make sure my practice can meet your needs to provide truly personalized medical care. Board certified in anti-aging and family medicine, Paul E. Cox, MD, MS, is an expert at turning back time. Firmly rooted in a scientific approach, Vital Living Healthcare focuses on early detection, prevention, and innovative treatments to reverse agerelated decline. By using state-of-the-art equipment and techniques, along with focusing on all aspects of your health (mind, body, spirit, and surroundings), Dr. Cox will create a comprehensive and personalized design for maintaining or reclaiming your health and vitality. Experience the healthcare you deserve and schedule your complimentary consultation with Dr. Cox today.

Tennis Techniques to Avoid Sports-Related Injuries By Eli A. Finkelstein, MD

In Atlanta and its neighboring communities, tennis continues to be a popular sport athletes at all competitive levels turn to in order to remain healthy and maintain an active lifestyle. At Resurgens Spine Center, we applaud this attitude and strive to educate athletes on how to fulfill their passion for sports safely. Tennis is a sport that has the potential to cause injury to any portion of your spine. Commonly, shoulder, elbow, and knee injuries can occur. However, between 20 to 25% of all sports-related injuries affect and include the spine. Tennis, in particular, causes repetitive impact to your spinal column. Serving, forehand, and backhand strokes all require a large degree of acceleration and deceleration in the body, as well as trunk and spine rotation. These movements typically require quick positional changes that put stress on the small joints of the neck and low back, compress disks, and overwork the muscles, ligaments, and soft tissues that aim to support your spine. Here are three tips to keep you on, versus off, the tennis court. PREVENTION Prevent spinal and other orthopedic injuries by performing proper warmup and cooldown exercises to prepare and recover your body. By stretching and loosening up muscles, joints, disks, and other soft tissues, you are less likely to experience strains, joint sprains and spinal injuries. For the best results, consult you doctor to assist in finding the best routines for you. Assure that your racket works for you. A more rigid racket with less string tension will reduce spine torque and trunk rotation, whereas a flexible tennis racket frame will require more trunk rotation and potential spinal pain and injury. It is important to

have the correct racket handle size, not only to avoid “tennis elbow,” but also to prevent changing the biomechanics of your swing, which will ultimately stress your spine. FORM Use proper form when playing. Serving, in particular, creates significant stress to your spine. Consider a slice serve in place of a kick serve to reduce risk. A coach or tennis “pro” can be an excellent source of education to assure your technique is matched up with your physical attributes and to avoid the onset of new or worsening of chronic injuries. HARD VERSUS SOFT COURT The type of court you play on can have an immense impact on how much punishment your spine will take while playing. Hard courts require more agility, speed, reaction time, and most importantly, absorb less shock. Soft courts may be a better choice when available. In addition to absorbing the abrupt start-and-stop nature of tennis, clay and grass surfaces allow you more time for proper body positioning, therefore assuring better technique and less risk of injury. Tennis is a game that tests your agility, endurance, and ability to think quickly on your feet. Because of this, injury prevention must remain in the forefront to any athlete wishing to participate. To reduce your chances of causing injury to your spine, follow the tips above.

Jarryd Wallace As a professional track athlete, it goes without saying that Jarryd Wallace’s fitness routine looks a little different than your average Atlantan because Wallace is anything but average. He’s the defending 200 meter World Champion in the men’s T64 classification and is currently training to maintain that title and grasp a few others this November at the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He also has his sights on an even bigger goal: a gold medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. “This will be my third Paralympic Games and my third shot to take home a Paralympic gold medal— currently the only gold medal I have not won from an international event.” Beyond claiming titles, Wallace is also tackling another feat: executive producing and starring in a documentary. “‘Race to Tokyo’ is a film following myself and Ken Endo, an engineer in Japan, as we try to develop the fastest blade in the world heading into the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Through what we learn with this technology, we hope to develop a more cost-effective blade for society and help create opportunities for those with amputations to become active again.”

Stevie Baggs Jr. Meet health and wellness ambassador for the City of Atlanta, Stevie Baggs Jr. An actor, author, speaker, former professional athlete and Young Living brand ambassador, Baggs is charged with educating city employees about healthy living, but he doesn’t stop there. He also runs the Creating Empowerment Through Autonomy (CETA) foundation, which he founded with his mother. “I call myself an octopus because I do eight different things, but they all go in the same direction, and they all intersect at the same spot. It’s all connected to my passion and my purpose,” Baggs says. Today, CETA works with 10 centers in Atlanta, like the Rosel Fann Recreation Center, for after-school programming. “We have a curriculum called True Wealth, where we help young people develop their character and leadership, and learn about health, wellness and technology,” Baggs explains. “Essentially, the things they’d never get in the regular education system.”

When an old Hollywood friend called on Mitchell Anderson to star as Jason in Amazon’s “After Forever” series, which recently won five Daytime Emmy Awards, he knew it was too good of a role to pass up. “It’s an incredibly rangy part with both intense drama/sadness, but also a touch of whimsy and comedy. I had never had that kind of all-encompassing role before,” he says. Once an actor starring in the likes of “Party of Five,” these days Anderson is often found behind the scenes as the founder and owner of Midtown’s popular health-focused eatery, MetroFresh. Since the show wrapped its first season, Anderson has been moving full steam ahead to open his second MetroFresh location, and following his own advice. “It was great to do the show without anything riding on it. I have a big life. I’m happy and fulfilled with what I’ve been doing for 15 years. I believe that’s why the work was so much better. When we allow ourselves to show up without self-judgment, I truly believe we can fly!”

When I come home from working in the kitchen, which means I’m up at 4:20 a.m. and on my feet for nine to 10 hours, I get on my bed and open a book. I’m constantly reading. I also do that to fall asleep for a 40-minute nap! It takes me months to finish a book, but that’s how I unwind. Well, that and a nice glass of pinot noir around 5 p.m. I usually work six days a week, but I try as hard as I can to keep my Sundays free of work. I recharge on Sundays by puttering around the house doing ‘not too strenuous’ chores, going out for a long brunch, and usually, reading the Sunday edition of the New York Times on the couch with my eyes closed. By Monday morning, I’m ready to do it all over again!

Nick LaMonte Nick LaMonte, My Home Improvement magazine’s 2019 Rising Stars of the Home Industry cover winner and 2018 Rookie of the Year for Harry Norman, REALTORS®, says when it comes to fitness and nutrition, it’s all about moderation. “I stay pretty strict when it comes to my diet during the week, and I will prep most lunches and dinners. It’s definitely what works for me with such a busy schedule. I go to the gym to weight train at around 7 in the morning, and I run roughly three to four times a week at night after the craziness of the day is over.” Craziness is one word for it. LaMonte lives an active lifestyle, professionally and personally. He gives back through different ministries at his church and is also a mentor for a student at Woodson Park Academy elementary school. His secret to success? “Staying consistent is key. Whether it is in the gym or for my business, I am consistent—doing the things every day that will make me better, even when I don’t want to.”

Friends and family have always been my best way to recharge. I love to surround myself with people who have the same interests, goals, and love for everything that I do. It allows me to take time to just enjoy life in the moment.

Shane Lord Serenbe resident Shane Lord says his home plays a significant role in his inspiration for looking and feeling his best. “Serenbe helps people get their vitamin N (‘N’ for nature). We are surrounded by wooded hills, grassy meadows, streams, ponds and nature trails. We have an organic farm across the street from our house, horse stables up the street and an animal farm on the far end of the property.” As far as doing good goes, that’s where Lord’s employer comes in. A corporate attorney in the legal department of The Home Depot, Lord says the company emphasizes philanthropy. “Two key values for The Home Depot are ‘doing the right thing’ and ‘giving back.’ We preach and live these values. After joining The Home Depot in 2013, the company asked me to support The Home Depot Foundation, Team Depot, and The Homer Fund, which are the charitable arms of the company. The Home Depot literally pays me to help it do the right thing and give back!”

Jamie Adams Il Giallo Osteria & Bar’s co-owner and executive chef Jamie Adams (formerly the executive chef at Veni Vidi Vici) might be known for his delectable Italian dishes to Atlanta residents, but to those close to him, he’s also known, ironically, for his heart. Chef Adams underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2000 at 41. Beyond inspiring health and wellness changes, his ticker scare also made him even more invested in his passion for helping others. He’s worked with CURE Childhood Cancer, Moving in the Spirit, Atlanta Community Food Bank, Jewish Family & Career Services, and takes part in the 300-mile Chefs Cycle to fundraise for No Kid Hungry. “I give from my heart as my [Christian] faith directs me. I don’t like the ‘give back’ thing, as I have not taken anything from anybody. My faith teaches to give, save, and then live on the rest. Take yourself out of the center and put others in front.”

My faith teaches to give, save, and then live on the rest. Take yourself out of the center and put others in front.—Jamie Adams How do you stay fit? W.E.R.C., that is ‘wildly erratic road cycling,’ which translates into grabbing every gap in my schedule to get out on the roads! I aim for 100 miles a week—two shorter rides during the week and longer ones on the weekends. I like to go all the way to Lake Lanier.

Healthy is eating clean food that is free of chemicals, genetic tinkering, processing, etcetera. So my favorite go-to meal is a great thin-crust pizza (I love a little kick from a spicy Calabrese salame), a little salad with tasty greens, beets, a simple vinaigrette, and something crunchy like toasted hazelnuts, and a great glass of Barbera!

Eric Payne Eric Payne describes his fitness routine as a journey. “I began on January 1, 2017, with one pushup, one situp, and one pullup and became disciplined. I added more reps with each passing day. I’m currently participating in an online 90-day fitness challenge, which has me working out on average 60 minutes a day, six days a week.” By day, Payne is a freelance marketing and communications consultant, but his current project is even more intriguing: an interactive digital novel called “Just Between Us,” which readers can purchase one chapter at a time or once the tale is finished. “It’s the story of a 40-something guy who thinks he has it all—great job, beautiful wife and family—then he suddenly loses all of it. I hope it will not only entertain, but give hope and direction to those who find themselves facing unbelievable odds and feel it’s too late to turn things around,” Payne says. Adding, “It’s interactive because it isn’t complete and I have the ability to alter the storyline based on the way the characters evolve or to poll readers to find out how they’d like the story to go and write accordingly.”

Hank Stewart When asked to describe his day job, Hank Stewart says he’s more of an around-the-clock man. “It’s certainly not 9-to-5. I’m a published writer, author and poet. I have won an Emmy. I have two books that were on bestseller lists for Essence, and Congressman Hank Johnson, of the 4th Congressional District, made me the poet laureate of his district,” he explains. Stewart also co-founded The Stewart Foundation with Gwendolyn Mason. “What we saw, particularly in the African-American community, was a lot of our civil rights legends passing away. However, we didn’t see a whole lot of torches being passed. We wanted to develop an organization that was developing leaders and developing young people who were concerned and conscious,” Stewart says.

Kevin Palmer As CEO of PalmerHouse Properties, a residential and commercial realty business that has been recognized more than once by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of the Best Places to Work in Atlanta, Kevin Palmer knows a thing or two about leadership. “It really isn’t ‘what we do’ that creates our culture but rather, ‘how we treat you.’ Every business decision that is made at PalmerHouse is based on what is best for the agent,” he says. On the success side of things, Palmer notes the benefits of collaboration. “I have had the honor to work with amazing leaders and entrepreneurs. We launched PHP CARES in December 2018. PHP CARES was established to give our agents an easy way to give back to the community. Based on recommendations made by our agents, this year PHP CARES will donate to Team Summer and Englewood Animal Rescue Sanctuary. Team Summer was created by Summer Dale, the daughter of one of our Atlanta agents, Lynne Dale. Diagnosed with cancer at 15, Summer realized kids with cancer were the only ones who could truly understand what she was going through. She began surprising them with special gifts to cheer them up and to connect with them for support. Summer lost her battle in 2012, but her approach to gift giving continues to uplift children fighting cancer. Team Summer raises money to fund the gifts, and all gifts are given from one child with cancer to another child with cancer.

Though an enlarged prostate is not always an appropriate topic of conversation, that doesn’t make it any less important. Over 70% of men in their 60s have symptoms of BPH, a condition in which the prostate enlarges as men get older. It is one of the leading reasons men visit urologists. BPH rarely produces noticeable symptoms in men under the age of 40, but the likelihood of developing symptoms goes up sharply with age. Men in their 50s have a 50% chance of being affected by BPH, and that likelihood reaches 90% by the time a man reaches the age of 80. Men approaching middle age should be on the lookout for symptoms like: • Frequent need to urinate (eight or more times per day) • A sudden urgent need to urinate • Difficulty or delay in starting urination

One of the first places to show aging is the eye area. Many people with excess skin hanging over their eyes or puffiness under the eyes can appear tired or even angry. Eyelid surgery, or Blepharoplasty, is the facial cosmetic procedure for removing excess eyelid tissue. Blepharoplasty can allow your eyes to become refreshed and full again. Due to the heavy male skin, the eyebrows commonly droop early.

BEFORE

AFTER

One of the easiest treatments for this condition is the injection of the muscles with Botox. Combining a Blepharoplasty with Botox treatment is a great way to achieve handsome results with minimal downtime! Dr. Brian Maloney performs Blepharoplasty surgery in his office using only local anesthesia or twilight general anesthesia, depending on where the procedure is performed. The procedure is safe, and there is minimal discomfort. The incision for Blepharoplasty is hidden in natural creases of the eyelid—inside the lower lid or along the lower lash line. Dr. Maloney uses fine, dissolvable sutures that melt away. The result is a more rested, youthful appearance.

Limited-time special price of $2,500 for upper lid Blepharoplasty and 50 units of Botox, a savings of $1,200!

Posh Body Sculpting is now offered by Dr. Monte Slater in Buckhead, Atlanta. This “top” noninvasive treatment reduces unwanted fat in many areas— tightening and toning the skin, while removing unwanted toxins from the body. It is a great way to sculpt your body without undergoing an invasive procedure. The best part is that it is painless, affordable, and you will see immediate results. Dr. Slater, Medical Director of Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic & Center for Anti-Aging, says he added “Posh Body Sculpting Treatments” to the menu of services for his patients BEFORE AFTER because, “This is the best noninvasive fat reduction/skin-tightening system I have found. We have our own patient photos to prove it! This technique destroys fat, tightens skin, and reduces toxins.” So many of the current treatments on the market require multiple visits, are painful with less than promised results, and have a high price tag. We utilize ultrasonic cavitation (USC) coupled with radio frequency (RF), which destroys the fat cells and tightens skin while cleaning and detoxify the fat cells from the body—achieving beautiful and permanent results. Both men and women can get rid of unwanted fat and visibly tighten skin at the same time, with no downtime. Each session takes 90 minutes and three to four treatments are recommended for optimal results.

Nonsurgical body sculpting—the latest painless treatment for fat reduction and skin tightening with immediate results.

After making over Atlantans for nearly 40 years, it’s easy to see why Richie Arpino has made national headlines for his haute hairstyles. At Richie Arpino Salon in Buckhead, his clients, of which roughly 50 percent are men, turn to him to provide a hairdo that complements their personality, profession and much more. Today, an increasing number of men are saying goodbye to big-box chops and hello to personalized cuts. When it comes to finding the perfect ’do for you, Arpino says, “Hairstyles are really determined by lifestyle, profession, and selfconfidence.” Even though Arpino believes that every haircut should be personalized to the man receiving it, he does offer a BEFORE AFTER couple of rules of thumb for men dealing with gray or thinning hair: Don’t dye it all one color. When men start to notice gray hairs, their first instinct is to usually dye their hair all one color. Instead, sweep through “streaks” of darker color versus all over darker color, which can age men even more. Do cut thinning hair shorter. While this seems counterintuitive, the closer cut makes thinning spots less prominent.

Hairstyles are really determined by lifestyle, profession, and self-confidence.

When most people hear filler they think of ladies and their lips, but that is only a small part of what filler can do. More and more men are choosing to have treatments with fillers to regain their youthful fullness. At the age of 20, our body’s production of collagen begins to slow. In order to restore the volume loss, both men and women often turn to fillers. Men can benefit from having fillers injected into lines, wrinkles, nasolabial folds, cheeks, jawlines, and even lips to restore lost volume and diminish the signs the aging or to create a more masculine appearance by strengthening those features. It is important to make sure your injector is experienced in injecting men, as there are many differences between men and women that must be considered to ensure a positive outcome. Men have jawlines and chins that are more prominent, straighter noses, with a wider and higher forehead. Men also have more muscle mass and subcutaneous tissue but lower levels of adipose tissue, so dosing and placement is very different than when women are treated. As filler and Botox become more familiar to men and they become more knowledgeable about what it can do for them and the myths are dispelled, the number of men utilizing these treatments to look and feel like their best self will continue to increase.

The Foundation of Foot Care Simple steps to achieving and maintaining strong, healthy feet By Karon Warren

An Ounce of Prevention There’s a whole host of problems that can affect our feet and can be avoided with a bit of preventive care. “Preventing common medical foot issues frequently comes down to common sense measures such as maintaining good footwear,” says Matthew J. Reschly, MD, of North Atlanta Dermatology. Improper footwear is often cited as the cause of conditions such as ingrown toenails, corns (when skin becomes hard due to pressure and friction), and bunions. A bunion is a bony bump on the side of the foot, near the joint at the bottom of the big toe. This develops when the bone or tissue moves out of place. Bunions can be caused by an array of factors, including abnormal foot mechanics and anatomy, such as being flat-footed, having joint hypermobility, and inflammatory joint disease. Since bunions are a chronic problem that can worsen over time, as people age, they are likely to be affected by them.

“Any shoe that is a flat, has a tight toe box, or has an overly high heel is bad for overall foot health and function,” says Richard Kaufman, DPM, of Ankle and Foot Centers of Georgia - Roswell and Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. Tik Pau, MD, a Gwinnett Medical Center-affiliated physician and primary care provider with Gwinnett Medical Group’s Bostock Family Medicine advises avoiding shoes that are undersized, have pointed-toes that constrict feet, are narrow, and have a heel height of more than 2 inches. 62

An orthotic (shoe insert) can also be helpful in keeping bunions and hammertoes at bay. Hammertoe is a common foot deformity that causes an unusual bend in the middle joint of a toe. It typically occurs because of soft tissue injury, inflammatory arthritis, neuromuscular disorders or trauma like stubbing, jamming or breaking a toe, notes Dr. Pau. “These conditions [bunions and hammertoes] are biomechanical in nature, so wearing an orthotic that stabilizes your hindfoot [back area] can prevent the abnormal mechanics that lead to their formation during gait while walking,” says Dr. Kaufman. When it comes to selecting an orthotic, there are three options— over-the-counter brands such as Dr. Scholl’s®, medical-grade orthotics, and custom orthotics. “Pure over-the-counter orthotics do not actually correct abnormal foot mechanics, which is what you should really be looking for in an orthotic,” Dr. Kaufman adds. While custom orthotics are his ideal recommendation, medical-grade inserts, such as ones by Redi-Thotics® and Powerstep®, can be purchased at a podiatrist’s office or on Amazon but have a limited lifespan of around six months, and are not best for people with high arches.

For most of us, we never think about our feet until there’s a problem. Maybe it’s something small like a blister, or it could be more serious like pain when walking. Simply put, most of us don’t take proper care of our feet until it’s too late for straightforward solutions. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. By giving our feet some tender loving care each day, they will reward us by staying healthy and attractive.

one of the most common causes of foot and heel pain in adults, plantar fasciitis—is a medical issue to watch out for. Plantar fasciitis is characterized by pain in the plantar region (the middle part of the bottom) of the foot that worsens with walking. “Possible risk factors for the development of plantar fasciitis include obesity, prolonged walking or standing on hard surfaces, prolonged jumping, flat feet, and having high arches,” says Dr. Pau. The condition can be prevented

and treated by stretching the plantar fascia and calf muscles, avoiding flat shoes and walking barefoot, using shoe

inserts, and decreasing physical activities that are suggested to be causative or aggravating (e.g., excessive running, dancing, or jumping).

Back to Basics Practicing good hygiene habits can go a long way in warding off foot troubles. A diligent daily scrub of the feet

moisture into the skin,” Dr. Kaufman says. He notes that CeraVe® works well for tough, thick skin and Eucerin® is effective at combating overall dryness. It’s also necessary to keep your toenails clipped and free of ragged edges. However, do not think fingernail clippers will work as well as toenail clippers. “You should always trim your toenails straight across while still showing a little of the white part of the top of the toenail. People make the mistake of rounding the nail edges and cutting the nail too short, making them susceptible to ingrown toenails and infections,” says Dr. Matthew Ward, podiatrist with Marietta Podiatry Group. If you do develop nail fungus, there are multiple remedies available. “The most effective treatment for nail fungus is still to take terbinafine orally,” says Dr. Reschly. “However, there are several new treatments that do not require taking pills and monthly blood work. Three newer topical treatments include JUBLIA®, KERYDIN®, and Nuvail™, which can be quite effective if used properly every day for up to six months or one year.” He notes that over-the-counter nail fungus medication and unconventional topical applications of Vicks® VapoRub™, tea tree oil, and soaking the feet in LISTERINE® can also be beneficial.

Some Final Steps Many of us visit the gym multiple times a week, which provides ample opportunity for exposure to germs. To reduce your risk

of bringing home unwanted bacteria or a virus, do not go barefoot in a gym shower or poolside and opt to

wear flip-flops or sandals instead. Also, change your socks daily to keep moisture at bay. Choose socks with wicking material that wicks away sweat, along with socks that allow your feet to breathe.

After washing, be just as thorough when drying the feet, making sure to dry the area between the toes so there is no residual moisture that could lead to fungi. Once dry, follow up with a good lotion or foot balm to moisturize the feet. “If you find that you have dry skin or cracked heels, using a petroleum-containing emollient or a humectant, such as lactic acid, can help draw

An Atlanta fitness icon is making healthcare accessible in one of the world’s poorest communities. By Katherine Michalak

The serenity of the Indonesian island Bali has long been treasured by Tony de Leede (above), the wellness entrepreneur that brought Australian Body Works, among other popular fitness companies, to Atlanta. Partnering with his wife, Sue, the two are now using their business knowledge for humanitarian efforts to help the people of their beloved tropical paradise live longer and healthier lives. bestselfatlanta.com

Taking On The World In a way, the Balinese people gave Tony his start in business. As a 20-something, the Sydney, Australia native developed his first successful venture with a clothing business importing pieces from Bali and the Philippines.

Bali Sehat (which is Bahasa Indonesian for Healthy Bali) provides healthcare and education to villagers, many of whom live on less than $100 a year, in the poorest regions of East Bali. “This community lives on the side of a volcano,” Sue de Leede explains. “There’s limited education and no contraception. People can die from what would otherwise be simple infections.”

On the other side of the world, fate smiled on Tony as a two-week stay in Atlanta morphed into 20 years. During those decades, he founded the hugely successful Australian Body Works (ABW) fitness club chain, capitalizing on the growth of the city as it paralleled with the growth of the health/exercise industry. He served as an envoy for the Australian team during The de Leedes began supporting Bali Sehat’s work financially and collaborating with the Bishops to create opportunities the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and continued that relationship to expand its impact. “Our initial involvement was by way of in 2000 when the Olympics headed to his hometown of sponsoring the ‘Healthy Days’ that the foundation conducts Sydney. As Tony streamlined his business focus, he and Sue enjoyed more time visiting Bali and found themselves often discussing priorities for their next phase of life. “We both wanted to leave a mark on this world,” Tony muses. The stars aligned in early 2014 when Tony and Sue met another Australian couple in Bali who founded a health-focused charity. That couple, Sue and Ray Bishop, had been looking toward their own retirement years when they fell in love with the Balinese people and recognized their dire need for better local health resources, founding the Bali Sehat

to raise funds to establish a larger clinic/small hospital with enhanced services and facilities. “This new space will be able to serve more patients with equipment, a maternity section, dental services, an emergency department, separate male and female wards, and the ability to get patients to a major hospital should they need it,” Sue de Leede confirms.

Listening To The Heart

We want to help break the poverty cycle through education, help the people here [get jobs] in the tourism industry. —Sue de Leede

For Sue de Leede, the involvement with Bali Sehat awakened a fervent interest in medicine. She watched the medical staff and volunteers as they threw themselves into each task, ready to find solutions and treat any patient who appeared. She listened to their challenges and applauded their devoted efforts … and imagined herself doing the

same. So, at age 46, she began studying to become a doctor. “It’s something I’ve always thought about, but life happened around me,” she confesses. That is, until she decided to make it happen. “There was a year of premed curriculum, now I’m about three years into the program,” she says. “Then, I’ll work at a hospital for a year as a general practitioner and after that I plan to work in Bali and at other refugee camps.” She credits the Bali Sehat team and their patients as the inspiration for her leap of faith, noting that everyone has some type of hurdle to overcome in life, whether physical or circumstantial.

As Tony and Sue work alongside the Bishops to make the Bricks for Bali campaign a success, they look forward to furthering the nonprofit’s overall growth and aid. In the future, it is planned for the de Leedes to become even more involved with the operational aspects of the organization. “These are beautiful, joyful people,” Sue de Leede praises of the Balinese residents, “and we are so excited to see this unfold.”

As Bobby Johnson was out for an AJC Peachtree Road Race training run seven years ago, he noticed a homeless man without shoes. Out of kindness, Johnson offered his size 15 sneakers to the man. The simple gesture inspired him to launch EcoSneakers, a self-funded social enterprise that partners with organizations and businesses to collect new and used athletic shoes to be donated to local homeless shelters, such as the Atlanta Children’s Shelter, recycled to create surfaces for playgrounds, basketball courts, and tracks, or sold overseas to be cleaned and repaired then resold by local businesses in those countries. Since its inception, more than 300,000 shoes have been repurposed. The grassroots initiative has also been the No. 1 vendor for donations at the Peachtree Health and Fitness Expo. In addition, the team at EcoSneakers has collaborated with Central Atlanta Progress, Georgia Power, and more to host a biannual Sneaker Week that MAYOR KEISHA LANCE BOTTOMS, BOBBY JOHNSON encourages participants to get active and donate athletic shoes. And during the week of Super Bowl LIII, EcoSneakers partnered with The Ludacris Foundation and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms for the Sole of Atlanta campaign, which distributed shoes to underserved Atlantans.

Motivating Mentors

Pay It Forward

Make a difference in the life of a young person in foster care by participating in the Foster Care Support Foundation’s (FCSF) Hope 4 Tomorrow Mentoring Program. The foundation provides free services and goods such as clothing, school supplies, and developmental toys to children in foster and relative care. The FCSF is looking for volunteers to spend time with a mentee by dedicating a minimum of four hours every month. The two of you can bond over common interests and hobbies—anything from basketball to baking. If mentorship isn’t in the cards for you, you can also support the work of the foundation by dropping off donations of gently used and new items or volunteering at its Roswell distribution and donation center.

Youth Entrepreneurs Developing Dreams and Inspirations (Y.E.D.D.I) aims to prepare the next generation of business owners to understand the U.S. banking and monetary system, to find a job, and to create jobs. Y.E.D.D.I is looking for volunteers to help with event planning, grant writing, and calendar management.

my best self James A. Bailey

Caregiving is a responsibility that requires patience and compassion— it is also a role often portrayed by women. But according to the AARP Public Policy Institute, 4 in 10 family caregivers are men. There are thousands of men around the country, like James A. Bailey, who put the needs of those they love before their own on an everyday basis. Here, we highlight just one of those stories, and how this Decatur resident tends to the needs of his “brother” Larry Grant. By Alex McCray

How did you become a caregiver? I met Larry Grant (who was born with a partial left hand and foot) in 1997 and invited him to church. We became friends and a few years later, I started a nonprofit called House of Refuge Ministries. Larry assisted me with this community service and later went to work with the United States Postal Service. However, we continued to stay in touch on and off over the years. Around May 2007, I tried to get in contact with him to let him know a close friend had passed away. I couldn’t seem to reach Larry, though, and I didn’t know where he was. (L TO R): LARRY GRANT WITH ATOM, JAMES A. BAILEY WITH MISSY

After making some calls, I found out that Larry was at Gwinnett Medical Center and in critical condition. He was given three to six months to live. While visiting him, I asked the hospital staff for permission to assist with his basic care. Fortunately, it was second nature to me since I am a retired Army nurse and licensed massage therapist. Also, all of Larry’s immediate family lived out of state, so I’m sure it made him feel good to have someone he was familiar with visit him on a regular basis. Larry was eventually discharged to a nursing home. I would visit him often. I saw how unhappy he was there and how terrible the conditions were. Eventually, we were able to have the paperwork completed to make me Larry’s legal guardian and he came to live with me—something I never thought would happen. Now, it’s been 12 years since the doctors gave him three to six months to live!

What is daily life like with Larry now? Just looking at Larry, you wouldn’t think anything was challenging for him. He doesn’t talk but mostly understands what you’re saying. He has a smile to live for! It’s all about routine. I bathe and groom him, including brushing his teeth and assisting him with getting dressed. I prepare all of his meals and cut up his food, and I drive him wherever he needs to go. He loves a road trip. Larry also does a great job of taking care of our two little Chihuahuas, Atom and Missy.

What involvement have you had with AARP and its support programs and resources for caregivers? It’s a great organization. My good friend, Carolyn Hartfield, does a lot with AARP and has invited me to several meetings. The meetings are informative and have made me feel special—there, the focus is all about me for a moment. The training dinners, the encouragement, and practical tips offered are all so wonderful. Statements as simple as, ‘Fix your food first, then fix the food for the person that you’re caring for’ are such great reminders to take care of myself. Sometimes I feel like I’m not doing enough and then someone will come along and say, ‘You’re doing such a great job for Larry.’

How do you recharge and practice self-care? I belong to two meetup groups, OPALs [Older People with Active Lifestyles] and Atlanta African American Adventurers, both created by Carolyn. I love getting out into nature and going hiking at least once a month. It refreshes me. I also like working out at the gym and swimming. Getting a full-body massage is great too. I love chocolate as well! So once a month, I’ll treat myself when we go grocery shopping at Sprouts Farmers Market and get the best healthy chocolate.

What advice do you have for other male caregivers/caregivers in general? Care for others because you love them and don’t worry about stereotypes or what other people are thinking. https://aarp.org/caregiving
