from the publisher Celebrate Every Day The past few weeks have been a time for celebration and reflection. Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine, a publication I started in 2001 and sold in 2005, celebrated its 10-year anniversary on August 17. When I walked through the door to that event, I began to reflect on my life as it was 10 years ago and all that had transpired in those 10 years. The years have been packed with life’s highs and lows…the success of Atlanta Home Improvement Magazine, and now, Best Self, my amazing kids, friends and family—the lows...divorce and the loss of my mom. Overall the world has changed a lot! Ten years ago was before 9/11, social media, Smartphones, and the economic downturn. Oprah was still on TV! All of this made me think, wow, what will the next ten years have in store for this world, my children and for me? After feeling really overwhelmed for a minute, I quickly concluded the only thing I know for sure is change is in store. Overall, life is good and it is important to celebrate the good things in our lives every day. And with that said, I bring you My Best List. All the best

Sherri Adair, Publisher, sadair@bestselfatlanta.com For web links to My Best List items go to our home page at www.bestselfconnect.com

My Best List La Fais Do Do-Event Facility This beautiful and unique New Orleans-inspired event facility is owned by my friend, Marie Andujar. Le Fais Do Do is a French term that literally means to “make sleep,” but in the Cajun culture, a fais do-do is a big party where dancing and festivities last long into the night. This facility is wonderful for weddings, proms, anniversaries and all kinds of events large and small. Located in the Chattahoochee/Howell Mill Industrial district with plenty of parking, it is a great place for whatever you are celebrating. Details: (404) 387-3027, www.lefaisdodo.com Whole Foods Market/Three Wishes Wine This is good wine at a great price! It is the Whole Foods Market version of Trader Joes’ Two Buck Chuck. It comes in three varieties: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and is made from California grapes in environmentally friendly glass bottles. It costs around $3 a bottle and is perfect for any celebration. Details: www.wholefoodsmarket.com Arden’s Garden Detox After ‘celebrating,’ you may want to try The 2 Day Detox from Arden’s Garden. It is a unique blend of fresh juices that helps cleanse, detoxify and rejuvenate your body. These fresh citrus juices supply you with minerals, antioxidants and more than 100% of the recommended daily allowance of essential vitamins. Drink one gallon of detox each day – as much distilled water as desired – and remember, no food! If you take prescribed medication, please consult your doctor before consuming grapefruit juice. from the editor What’s For Dinner? In 1826 the famed French gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote, “Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.” This idea has morphed into the old adage ‘you are what you eat’, but how true is this? With the rise in obesity and food-related illnesses, many consumers have begun to take a closer look at what’s on their plate and how it got there. Our Going Organic piece (p.29) aims to answer some of these questions and empower you to make healthier choices about your food. For those who not only worry about pesticides in their food, but also about allergic reactions, our Living with Food Allergies piece (p.43) shines a light on food allergies and how to treat them. If you are cooking for yourself or for others, improve your skills by stopping by Hal’s Kitchen (p.74) for a lesson in the culinary arts. Finally, expand your skills beyond the kitchen, by checking out the rest of our fun classes in Best Finds (p.16). Whether you are eating in or dining out, breaking bread with friends and family can make enjoying your food all the more fun. Happy reading!

bestfun Explore new ways to get more out of life Going Glamping By Jeyme Colodne Being a city girl at heart, the idea of camping often conjures up images of largerthan-life bugs, wild animals roaming about and mosquito-ridden tents. While I don’t argue that the merits of being in the great outdoors can be a wonderful way to appreciate nature, there was no way you could convince me to go into the wilderness unless it involved being inside a camper, complete with working toilet and air conditioning. Aiming to give people the best of both worlds, North Georgia Canopy Tours created modern teepees that offer a new way to sleep under the stars and enjoy glamping, (a new term being used for upscale camping). These luxury canvas teepees come fully equipped with comfortable beds, white cedar log furniture, air conditioning, lighting and electrical outlets. Feel close to nature but not far from your iPhone, enjoy roasting marshmallows outside, then retreat to the comfort of your air conditioned teepee – now this type of camping I could get use to! These teepees can accommodate a variety of guests and include the couple-sized 18’ Deer Teepee which sleeps two, the family-sized 22’ Dream Catcher Teepee which sleeps up to five and the group 26’ Hickory Teepee which sleeps up to 10. Located in Lula, GA, North Georgia Canopy Tours offers much more than just glamping. If soaring through the trees sounds appealing to you, let guides Steven and Jesina take you on a zip line tour you’ll never forget. Whether you opt for the two-hour Sky Bridge Tour or the three-hour Adventure Tour, you are sure to have a good time. If you are a newbie when it comes to zip lining, don’t worry as you’ll go through some basic training before you head out to the trees. If you want more of a rustic camping experience, there are also 15 sites available for those who prefer to pitch their own tent. As for me, I’ll be hanging out inside my teepee! Q

What can cause brown spots to appear on your skin?

When considering what causes brown spots, you must take into consideration the different types of pigment: Lentigos, also commonly known as “sun spots,” are caused by the sun. Melasma is usually caused by hormones or pregnancy. Hyperpigmentation, (brown patches), can be caused by medications, chemicals or previous trauma. What can you do if these spots appear? An SPF 30 sunscreen used daily is the foundation of any treatment regimen. Prescription skin lighteners and medical-grade cosmetic product lines are also available to complete your clearer and healthier skin program. Specialized treatments designed to lessen the appearance of brown spots are available. If you need help deciding which treatment option is right for your skin, follow up with your dermatologist to customize a plan best suited for you.

How important are hepatitis vaccines and how do I know if I need one?

Hepatitis vaccines are very important. Hepatitis A and B are very preventable forms of illness and their prevalence has decreased in society since the introduction of these vaccines. There are currently two available vaccines. The Hepatitis B vaccine is given in a series of three shots, and it is usually started shortly after the birth of a baby in this country, with booster shots given at one and six months later. Hepatitis A is acquired many times through the consumption of contaminated food or water. It is primarily transmitted via the fecal-oral route. This vaccine is given in two doses and can be given to children as young as one year old. While the illness is usually self-limited and will resolve in time, it can be very difficult to endure and possibly life threatening to patients with other liver impairment, or to elderly or sickly patients.

What are the causes and signs of anemia?

Anemia is a decrease in the number of red blood cells occurring when there is an inadequate amount of iron in the body to make hemoglobin. Anemia can be caused by a number of different conditions, including bleeding in the digestive tract, heavy menstrual periods and sickle cell disease. Some with anemia have no signs while others experience symptoms including headache, weakness, fatigue and irritability. Occasionally people experience shortness of breath and a rapid heartbeat.

Can snacking between meals cause weight gain?

Snacking between meals can cause people to gain weight if they make poor choices. However, snacking all by itself will not directly lead to weight gain. Successful snacking requires planning. Having healthy options available to you such as fruit, vegetables or nuts is very important. Next, figure out how many calories are in your snack. A healthy snack such as almonds can quickly turn into 500 calories if you aren’t careful about portion size.

How can the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome be eliminated?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome symptoms typically present as numbness, tingling and pain in the hands. The application of a wrist splint at night may help ease this discomfort. Repetitive activities such as typing may aggravate the symptoms, which may include finger tip numbness and tingling and hand pain with possible cramping. Making ergonomic changes at the workstation can help, as well as taking frequent breaks from repetitive activities. Occasional use of over the counter antiinflammatory drugs may help with aches and pains (consult with your physician before starting anti-inflammatory drugs). If this fails to resolve the symptoms, a consultation with a hand surgeon is recommended.

Upcoming Adopt a Golden Atlanta events: Adoption Days – Held the first Sunday of each month at The Pet Set, 2480 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta, GA 30329 Goldenrama – Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the field at Concourse Office Park. Come celebrate your golden retriever with more than 600 people and 250 goldens. The Golden Gala – Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 7 p.m. at Mason Murer Fine Art Gallery in Buckhead. Learn about Adopt a Golden and enjoy a night of fine food and Atlanta’s largest silent auction.

There is nothing quite like the love and loyalty of a dog, and in this day and age, we all could use a little extra support. Before heading to a breeder or pet store to find your new best friend, try looking at Adopt a Golden Atlanta, a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to finding homes for golden retrievers. Currently standing as the fourth largest golden retriever rescue in the country, Adopt a Golden Atlanta rescues more than 400 pups a year, ranging from ages six weeks to 13 years old. The organization, founded by Atlanta resident Lauren Genkinger, is the product of a large need for help, as well as a love for this friendly and popular breed (Genkinger owns four golden retrievers herself). “Atlanta has always had two golden rescues. One was failing in 2003, and at the time, I was on the board of the Golden Retriever Rescue of Atlanta (GRRA),” Genkinger says. “We had too many goldens that were being abandoned for one organization to help. I decided to create an organization to compliment GRRA, which is now our sister company. We sponsor rescues for people who already own a golden retriever who may have to get rid of their dog, and take them in before they go to a shelter. GRRA rescues the goldens once they go to a shelter.” Genkinger, now president of Adopt a Golden Atlanta, says the biggest thing she wants the public to understand about the organization is “you can adopt a pure bred golden retriever without needing to go to a breeder.”

The rescued dogs come from a number of backgrounds: some are left behind when owners move, others are abandoned because their owners can no longer afford animal medical care. Sadly, some are simply abandoned because they are deemed too old. Regardless of the age or medical care needed, Adopt a Golden Atlanta ensures each rescue receives a comprehensive evaluation, spay or neuter services, behavioral services, and veterinary care. Of course, this kind of love and care requires devout volunteers, as well as financial support. The organization has a large need for foster families to house and learn about the rescued goldens, before a permanent home is found. Even $10 of financial support goes a long way, which pays for a vaccine. To learn more ways to get involved, or to find your next loyal furry friend, visit: www.adoptagoldenatlanta.com.

“There are so many unwanted goldens and just to bring awareness to the fact you can get a pure bred from a rescue, it’s a huge cause. Many are trained, and there are no behavior problems,” Genkinger says. “And it’s about the people, too. The first golden we took in was from a soldier being deployed to Iraq and didn’t want to send his best friend to a shelter. It’s about the people and the dogs. We are trying to help people who love their dogs, and trying to make another family happy as well.”

Going Organic By Neal McSpadden

Unless you have not been in a grocery store in the past decade, you no doubt have noticed the explosion in popularity of organic foods. Billed as better for you and better for the environment, consumers are shelling out big bucks to buy organic. But, what is organic food? Is it really better for you or just the latest food fad that will be forgotten in a few more years?

What is Organic Food? In order for a food product to be labeled as ‘organic,’ the farmer who grew the food must be certified as following the standards set forth by the National Organic Program (NOP) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This program was created by a law passed in 1990. What surprises many is that the organic certification has nothing to do with the food itself. The certification only ensures that the farmer is following practices set forth by the NOP.

2011 Organic Shopping Guide P.37 P.37

“Federal agencies, usually the U.S. Department of Agriculture or the Food and Drug Administration, regulate what claims companies can make about their food,” explains Alice Rolls, the director at Georgia Organics. ‘Certified Organic’ is the most strictly enforced, and is the best bet for getting the healthiest, most natural, and chemical free food.” According to the Food Marketing Institute website (FMI.org), “‘Organic’ refers to how the food is produced. The food must be grown and processed using organic farming methods that recycle resources and promote biodiversity - two key elements of environmentally sustainable agriculture.” For example, if a farmer is growing spinach that he wants to sell as ‘organic,’ he must rotate his crops from season to season. He must also not use synthetic materials like pesticides, except for a long list of materials deemed safe by the USDA or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The farmer must work to increase soil fertility over time by planting other species that will help prevent erosion and bring nutrients back into the soil.

In essence, food grown organically (which might be a better term than organic food) is food that is grown in the same way that farmers grew food before the so-called “green revolution” of the 1950s and 1960s that ushered in synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. “Organic food is tastier, chemical free, and grown by a farmer using natural methods that benefit your health and the environment,” Rolls says.

Organic vs. Natural Walk into any supermarket and right next to certified organic foods will be foods labeled as “natural” or “hormone-free.” What do these labels mean and how are they different from organic? The short answer is that organic is the most stringently regulated, while the others are less so. Don’t confuse them with the term ‘organic.’ Only foods that are grown and processed according to USDA organic standards can be labeled organic. • Natural Foods: According to the FDA, “Natural foods are processed without preservatives or additives, but may have been grown with the use of pesticides or other conventional methods.” The FDA regulates the term ‘natural’ only as it applies to added color, synthetic substances, and flavors. • Organic: To use the term “organic” on a food package, farmers and manufacturers must verify through an independent auditing agency that production processes have met all the organic guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. USDA-certified organic produce comes from farms that have refrained from using synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and genetically modified seeds for at least three years. • Hormone-free: this means no hormones (like bovine growth hormone) or antibiotics were unnaturally given to the animal. The USDA-certified organic label cannot contain any artificial hormones.

What are the Health Benefits? So if the organic label has nothing to do with the food being sold, but more the practices of how it was grown, why should you buy it? Supporters of organic food claim that the fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats that result from these practices taste better and are better for you. The claimed health benefits of organic food falls into two categories. The first is that organic food has more nutrients than conventionally grown food. The second is that organic food is free of pesticides, and that exposure to these pesticides is harmful over time. Whichever school of thought you agree with, it seems as though many consumers are getting savvier about this idea and making a choice to cook and eat in places that serve up organic dishes. This is evident through the increase in popularity of farmers’ markets as well as restaurants who are disclosing more about the produce they use on their menus. “People have become more health conscious and concerned about consuming synthetic products used on their foods,” notes Chris Hadermann, of Milton’s restaurant which has three acres of farmland on the restaurant grounds where they grow the fresh vegetables that are used in their dishes. “Because we use only natural products in our soil and plants while they are growing, the produce itself is healthier.” It seems that people are now demanding healthier food in their kitchens as well as in the restaurants they frequent. “As we learn more about the importance of food for our health—that we are, literally, what we eat —and understand the scientific justification for this, people will continue to demand cleaner, better whole foods,” says Executive Chef Linton Hopkins owner of Restaurant Eugene, which uses organic ingredients in its menu items. The FDA regulates whether health claims can be made on food packaging or not, like whether broccoli can help prevent cancer. In order to approve a claim like that, the FDA requires scientific studies to be done showing such a benefit. To date there have not been any studies that really prove that organic food is better for you, but industry experts are working on it. In 2009, a research survey was presented at the EcoFarm summit by Dr. Charles Benbrook of The Organic Center comparing vitamin and mineral levels of foods grown in the same place at the same time: one set organic, one set conventional. These studies were repeated in multiple places with different crops, and the nutrient levels of each set were recorded. The results were that organic foods were higher in concentration for about two thirds of the vitamins and minerals tested. The conventional foods were higher in protein, nitrates, and about one third of vitamins and minerals. In those vitamins and minerals that were higher in the conventional foods, the differences were small, less than 10%. In those vitamins and minerals that were higher in organic foods, the differences were typically much larger, usually 20% or more. It turns out that the application of synthetic, high-nitrogen fertilizers for conventional foods does increase plant growth but does not increase the nutrition of the plants. So conventional farmers get higher yields (more tomatoes for example), but those extra tomatoes don’t have any more nutrition in them. You’d have to eat more conventional tomatoes to get the same nutrition as you’d get from www.bestselfconnect.com

organic tomatoes. That’s what is meant by nutrient density. Over 100 studies produced over the past 15 years have shown that organic foods typically have a higher nutrient density than conventional foods. This nutrient density affects the taste of food. The denser the nutrients, the more complex the flavor as your taste buds come into contact with different nutrients at the same time. That’s why a tomato bought from the supermarket will taste watery compared to one grown in your backyard. Researchers believe that the better taste and higher nutrient density of organic foods will increase how satisfying you find food, which will reduce overeating.

What are the Environmental Benefits? The environmental benefits of organic foods are harder to determine than the health benefits. No farmer wants his fields eroded down to bare rock, so practices like crop rotation and cover crops are age-old techniques to help the land recover from what we take out in the form of food. Organic certification does allow you to know that the producer is following these minimum standards, which you may not know about conventional producers. Additionally, the restrictions on fertilizers and pesticides helps ensure that the poisoning of groundwater is minimized. “There are a lot of negative ramifications to conventional style agriculture. One aspect involves the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers,” says Christine Anthony, co-producer and co-director of GROW!, a documentary about organic and sustainable farmers in Georgia. “Not only do these chemicals end up in the food that people eat, but a lot of the chemicals never break down and end up in our waterways, poisoning wildlife and destroying valuable ecosystems. Organic farming is based on balancing nature, not destroying it.”

Pesticides have been a major issue ever since Rachel Carson wrote about the dangers of the pesticide DDT in her book Silent Spring in 1962. Supporters of pesticide use say that these chemicals do no harm as long as they are used in accordance with guidelines set by the EPA. Organic food advocates, on the other hand, say that these artificial chemicals do not belong in our bodies and will poison us over time. Unfortunately, the science is out on which side can claim final victory. These kinds of studies will take decades to complete because long-term exposure to substances is exactly that: long term. In the meantime, we do know that organic food has about one-third the pesticide residue of conventional food. Organic food is typically not entirely pesticide-free because certain synthetic and natural pesticides are permitted under the organic regulations. Additionally, it is not uncommon for an organic farm to be sited next to a conventional farm. When the conventional farmer sprays his crops, a certain amount of it will drift on the wind to the neighboring fields. With more people becoming aware of the issue of pesticides, they are asking their local food markets where their produce is coming from. “Even farms that aren’t certified are growing chemical free food, so don’t be shy about asking questions,” encourages Rolls. “For example, if a farm is not Certified Organic, ask whether they used synthetic pesticides (really bad for your health) or synthetic fertilizers (really bad for the environment). While you’re chatting, you might as well ask for a sample. Nothing will let you know how fresh something is than a taste of the product itself.”

Where Can Organic Food Be Purchased? Over the past few years, the options for getting organic food have expanded tremendously. In most cases, organic food is sold right next to conventional food at the supermarket. You can also go to local farmer’s markets, where many of the sellers grow their food organically. “Most of the farmers markets run from April-November/December so it’s important that people shop every season, not just in the spring and summer months,” explains Rolls. “Atlanta area farmers markets can be found at Local Harvest, a great online resource for finding farmers markets, family farms and other resources nationwide.”

Where’s The Beef? Produce isn’t the only food that carries the organic label, beef can be organic too. Will Harris, owner of White Oak Pastures, weighs in on what it is and what consumers should look for. White Oak Pastures is a family owned and operated grass-fed beef producer committed to sustainability and low-stress animal handling that also minimizes environmental impact. What is the main difference between organic meat and free range? Organic meat is often raised in full confinement (CAFO’s, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations). The USDA organic standard requires that the animal be fed organic feed, which is often organic corn and soy. The standard does not require that the animal be allowed to express instinctive behaviors, or eat a natural diet. Free range only means that the animal is given some access to the outdoors. It is often only a token. I think that consumers should look for American Grass-Fed Association certification. Also, look for Whole Foods Market’s global animal partnership and animal welfare rating.

Why is the price point different between different meats? When consumers ask producers to raise meat differently, they are asking the farmer to give up tools that science has developed that lower the cost of production. This causes the cost of production to go up. Farmers have to charge more to produce meat that has a higher production cost. The farmer would go broke if he didn’t charge more for this meat. Farmers began raising meat industrially because they could do it cheaper, and make more money. What should consumers look for when buying their meat? The consumer should learn as much as possible about the person who produces the food that they feed to their families. Transparency is the key.

If you want to go more direct, you can join a community supported agriculture program (CSA). In a CSA, or food-co-op program, you buy a share of a farmer’s production. Most of them require you to pay a certain amount for the season up front and in return you get a portion of whatever is available for harvest each week. Some even deliver fresh produce and/or meats from a local farm to your door. There are also many websites dedicated to helping you find organic foods. But perhaps the best place to get organic food is just outside your door. Start a garden, get a couple chickens or rabbits, and you will know exactly where that food comes from and what has gone into it.

From the farmer’s perspective, there is an enormous drawback to organic certification: it can be expensive. Many good farmers that follow Earth and people-friendly practices simply choose not to pursue certification because of the cost. One of the best ways to know for sure where your food is coming from is to get to know your local farmers or get involved with the many organic food programs available out there.

You can meet them at farmers markets or you can take a trip out to the farms and see for yourself what their practices are. Many farmers are perfectly happy to show you around (so long as you’re not interfering with harvesting or planting time). It is relationships formed between the farmer and the consumer that will ensure the quality of the food being grown.

In the end, organically grown foods are those that satisfy a certain set of minimum standards. Like any set of rules there are exceptions and loopholes, those who go above and beyond the minimum, and those who exploit the loopholes. If you want the very best for your health, for your enjoyment, or for the environment, you must take the time to know where your food is coming from.

DREAMS OF A CITY FARMER Farmer Sue & The ArtBarn at Morning Glory Farm

Morning Glory Farm is open year-round and plays host to plenty of afterschool classes, fieldtrips, workshops and parties. With the endless activities that happen on the farm, it doesn’t seem as though her life has slowed down at all, but Shaw is quick to explain that she wouldn’t have it any other way. “We are so busy in our days, school, shopping, work, that our life becomes a busy blur,” says Shaw, “What the farm has to offer is the simplicity of a moment.”

How long have you owned Morning Glory Farm? Twelve years physically, but in my heart much longer. I have moments now and then when I am with a child or planting or painting something and I blink and shake my head with the feeling I have already seen this amazing moment before.

Introducing Giddy Up Sports In Home Training Team “We come to you”

Atlanta’s Top Personal Trainers (404) 549-2632

Have you always wanted to be a farmer? Since moving here, I have always jokingly called myself 'The Accidental Farm Girl.' In my previous life - I had nice nails, cute clothes and I loved to dabble in the garden but never had enough sun or space for more than a box of herbs and a few flowers in the front yard. After moving here with the simple goal of slowing down, putting my graphic design studio in the old barn and maybe just maybe getting a horse one day, somehow I was magically transformed. At the time I had been teaching some afterschool art classes and started incorporating the animals into the projects. The next thing I knew, I was Farmer Sue after a few of my students started calling me that. I laughed and said, ‘Wow, now I am somebody!’ Next came the pearls, pink shirts, overalls and big straw hat!

How did you come up with the concept for The ArtBarn? I had moved in and been here for a year and decided to throw myself a 40th birthday party complete with barbecue, outdoor music and fun. I invited all my friends most of whom had kids. I set up a table with random art supplies to keep the kids busy while we got dinner ready. What can people experience when they visit the farm? A true family farm. A day filled with laughter, learning and love. A day that feels like a visit to your favorite aunt or uncle’s house! Warm eggs, fuzzy chicks, a symphony of barnyard sounds, honey bees buzzing in the garden, and giggles as you tickle a pig’s tummy or the love you feel when the littlest donkey snuggles into your arms or a tiny lamb lays it head on your shoulder. Learning about the animals and how things grow in the garden. Creating a piece of art in the barn and simply making a memory your family will never forget.

Months and months later when a friend was debating what to do for her child’s birthday, I suggested doing it at the farm. All the kids had a blast at my party! We went for a nature walk, petted the old pony, met the rooster and made great art - they loved it. Next thing you know, the kids were calling it The ArtBarn. After a glass of wine and some sketching, the cute little logo came together and voilà, The ArtBarn was born. We’ve been partying like crazy ever since!

What inspires you? My inspiration comes from the simple beauty of nature and animals and seeing the world through a child’s eyes. Morning Glory Farm is the place I would have loved to have been able to hang out when I was a child. I would never have gone home and the good thing is now I don’t have to!

How have your life experiences and background contributed to what you are doing today? My whole life has contributed to the joy of this farm in so many ways. I liken them to colorful threads floating in the breeze then suddenly something happens and they all tangle up into this beautiful, sometimes messy, yet amazing tapestry that is your life or is this farm!

How do you lead a healthy lifestyle? Living on the farm has been a major life changing experience in so many ways. As far as healthy lifestyle goes, in the beginning it was giving up TV because there were so many things to learn and do. Then it was experiencing delicious farm fresh eggs. Next, it was home grown tomato sandwiches, trading sodas for water with mint from the garden and it just kept growing from there.

Photo by Amy Hunsinger, Sing Photography

Watching a chicken in its natural state and finding out how long it takes for a chick to be at your grocery store will really change your thoughts on some super market things. I am so excited that there is a huge push for Farm to Table information at school these days. Teachers are asking for more gardens and growing emphasis in their farm fieldtrips. Farm to Table has really helped me re-boost my own commitment to a better lifestyle and to see how much further I can push what I do here at the farm. I try my best to eat better and smarter. I’m trying to pay more attention to sugars and see what I can replace with honey now that I have the bees. Growing things makes you want to cook more things! Salad straight from the garden is amazing.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received? Listen to your heart. Follow your dream. Don’t let anybody tell you what you can or can’t do or what you are capable of. I do have days where I shake my head and think back to my old life and look at what I’m doing now and say, ‘Who would have ever thunk it?’ and it always makes me smile. www.bestselfconnect.com

Life with a Food Allergy Learning how to successfully manage food allergies and thrive By Alison Broderick

For some people, choosing what to eat is as simple as deciding what tastes good; however, individuals who suffer from food allergies don’t have that luxury. The wrong food choice can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. If you’ve never experienced an allergic reaction to food, then consider yourself lucky. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, it is estimated that food allergies cause approximately 150 to 200 fatalities per year, based on data from a five-year study of anaphylaxis (an acute multi-system severe type I hypersensitivity allergic reaction) from the Mayo Clinic. This is not to say that all food allergies are fatal. In fact, many people maintain healthy lives by avoiding the foods they know can make them ill. But what if you don’t know you’re allergic? Since each food is different, each allergic reaction can vary as well. Without proper care, testing and a follow-up visit to your physician, a simple rash could develop into something a lot more serious.

Food Intolerance v. Food Allergy It is important to remember that a food allergy is a real—and often dangerous—condition. Affecting children and adults, a food allergy takes place when the immune system reacts negatively to a particular food protein. “True allergic reactions to food are less common; they are estimated to be present in 6–8 percent of children under the age of five, and in 3–4 percent of adults,” says Juliet K. Mavromatis, MD, FACP, medical director of Personalized Primary Care Atlanta. Food allergies can develop at any time in a person’s life.

COMMON FOOD ALLERGIES These foods account for 90 percent of food allergic reactions. Any ingredient that contains protein derived from one or more of them, are designated as “major food allergens” by the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA). 1. Milk 2. Eggs 3. Fish 4. Crustacean Shellfish

- U.S Food and Drug Administration

A food allergy is an abnormal response to an otherwise harmless food triggered by the body’s immune system. When the food is first introduced, the body will build up specific, disease-fighting antibodies (known as immunoglobulin E or IgE). “IgE antibodies travel through the blood stream and settle on the mast cell. While the mast cell has many functions, it is responsible for allergic reactions. The next time that food comes into contact with the allergy antibody on the mast cell, it will activate the mast cell and cause an allergic reaction,” notes Karen A. DeMuth, MD, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine, and a physician on staff at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Many people confuse food allergy with food intolerance, which is far more common and does not involve the immune system. Lactose intolerance, also referred to as lactase deficiency, is an example of food intolerance. “A person who is lactose intolerant lacks the enzyme needed to digest the milk sugar (lactose). When that person consumes milk products, he or she may experience symptoms such as gas, intestinal cramps, bloating and diarrhea,” says Julie Shipkoski, MS, RD, LD, at Open Hand Atlanta and Good Measure Meals. Lactase deficiency and other food intolerances are typically not dangerous; instead, they produce uncomfortable symptoms.

Common Food Allergies The most common foods that people are allergic to are milk, soy, eggs, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish. “The way foods cause an allergy, and the allergic reaction itself, is the same for both adults and children,” says DeMuth. “However, children are more likely to have an allergy to milk, egg, wheat and soy, while adults have a greater prevalence of peanut, tree nut, shellfish and finned fish allergies. Children are also more likely to ‘outgrow’ food allergies.”

are allergic to milk or eggs, will outgrow their food allergy. However, allergies to peanuts, tree nuts (i.e. walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios and pecans), fish or shellfish tend to be life-long,” notes Shipkoski.

Symptoms of a Food Allergy Typically, an allergic reaction to a food occurs within one hour of coming into contact with the allergen. “Food allergies can be very severe and cause life threatening reactions know as anaphylaxis,” says Eugene Hurwitz, MD at the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia. “Other conditions that may be caused by food allergies include reflux problems and allergic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, hives, congestion problems with some foods, among others.” Many of the body’s systems can be affected during an allergic reaction, and symptoms may include the following: Skin: Hives, swelling, itching, rashes, tingling or itching in the mouth Stomach/Intestines: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, ulcers Lungs: Difficulty breathing, wheezing, cough, asthma Heart: Low blood pressure, dizziness, weakness

Diagnosis If you’re experiencing the signs and symptoms of a food allergy, make an appointment with a registered dietitian or doctor prior to making adjustments in your diet. During the diagnosis process, he or she will assess your detailed history to ensure symptoms are consistent with those of a food allergy. If a diagnosis cannot be made, the doctor or dietician may ask you to maintain a food diary and/or implement an elimination diet to make a more accurate diagnosis.

The means by which children become tolerant to once-active food allergies has not been fully determined. “Some experts believe it involves a gradual decline in levels of IgE antibodies to food allergens over time,” says Mavromatis. Others note the body’s ‘acceptance’ of the allergen in spite of a consistent increase in antibody levels.

If these tests point to a specific food, the doctor may wish to perform an allergy skin test to further identify the source of the problem. There are three kinds of skin tests: the scratch test (or puncture test), patch test and intradermal test. Skin tests typically involve exposing the skin to an extract of the allergen and examining its reaction. For those individuals who experience serious anaphylactic reactions, the doctor may perform blood tests, which evaluate the presence of food-specific IgE in the blood.

“According to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, almost all children who are allergic to wheat or soy, and 85 percent of children who

The double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) is another effective method for objectively diagnosing a food allergy.

The patient is gradually exposed to increasing doses of the suspected allergen, which are hidden in capsules. After the patient ingests the capsule, he or she is closely monitored for an allergic reaction. The term double blind comes from the doctor being ‘blinded’ as well—the capsules are controlled by another medical professional.

Seeking Treatment Once an allergy emerges, you’re left with managing its symptoms. Although there is no clinically proven method of prevention, some experts believe there could be an advantage to early exposure. Food allergies are a complicated blend of genetics and environment, and everyone experiences them differently. “Allergic reactions to food can be very unpredictable. Some individuals may react quickly and dramatically, whereas others gradually become sick. For some, a trace amount may trigger an allergic emergency, while others may need a comparatively large quantity before experiencing pain and discomfort. Some people have a single food allergy and others have allergies to multiple foods,” notes Shipkoski.

The best form of treatment for a food allergy is to simply avoid the food. When dining out, don’t be afraid to ask detailed questions about particular dishes and how they are prepared. “Eliminating foods altogether can leave you with an unbalanced diet, which may lead to other health problems,” Shipkoski adds. Therefore, it’s important to consult a doctor prior to making significant changes in your diet. Despite best efforts, you may still come into contact with the offending food(s). In this case, over-the-counter antihistamines can help reduce the symptoms of a mild allergic reaction. For a more severe reaction, however, an emergency injection of epinephrine may be required to immediately reverse the effects. Oftentimes, people who experience lifethreatening allergic reactions carry an epinephrine auto-injector, such as an EpiPen, with them at all times.

©2011 Alzheimer’s Association. All Rights Reserved.

Wiggins offers advice for anaphylaxis-prone individuals: “It is critical for anyone with a life-threatening food allergy to have an emergency plan in place that includes epinephrine (adrenaline)—the primary treatment for anaphylaxis. The biggest risk factor for death in people with known anaphylaxis is a delay in the administration of epinephrine, so always have it within reach.”

THE TEAM LEADER WHO SAW A DISEASE STEAL HER MOTHER’S PAST AND IS DETERMINED NOT TO LET IT TAKE HER DAUGHTER’S FUTURE.

Conclusion: Life Goes On While there has been an overall increase in the number of people with food allergies, the exact reason is unknown. Some experts believe this growing number to be the result of improved diagnosis, while other studies suggest a switch from farm life to rigorous cleanliness. Early exposure to bacteria is actually good for the immune system, yet society has become overly sterilized. In essence, a cleaner environment could lead to an increase in allergies. “The impact of living with food allergies is broad and can affect family, friends and even classmates or colleagues. The stress and anxiety that comes with managing a food allergy depends on the allergic individual, including his or her age, the amount of knowledge and education he or she has regarding food allergies, any history or experiences he or she may have in dealing with an allergic reaction or the use of epinephrine, and his or her support system,” says Karen Harris, president and founder of Food Allergy Kids of Atlanta—a nonprofit organization that supports and educates families that care for food-allergic children. The good news? Thanks to continuous improvements being made in the understanding of, and treatment for, food allergies, individuals living with this condition do not have to suffer; instead, they can maintain a healthy, happy lifestyle.

Today’s Top Anti-Aging Technologies

What would you say are the most popular anti-aging technologies today? Skin-tightening laser treatments! We use only Cynosure brand lasers in our facility to safely and effectively treat a wide variety of skincare concerns. We also use class four medical devices that are FDA regulated.

Who are the typical candidates for these treatments? We can treat all skin types, though these anti-aging treatments are most common among adults age 40 and over.

What does your Refresh Laser Facial involve? The Refresh Laser Facial utilizes the latest in laser technology to create a lasting change inside the live layer of tissue. Our aestheticians use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to target things like sun spots and facial veins. This is followed by a skin smoothing collagen facial. We recommend a combination of three laser treatments along with the facial to target your skin’s needs.

What symptoms does this treatment alleviate? The Refresh Laser Facial removes any pigment irregularity, evens skin tone, and brightens your complexion.

What types of results can we expect from a Refresh Laser Facial? You’ll notice brighter, tighter skin with smoother texture. The light therapy diffuses facial redness, removes broken capillaries, and helps even skin tone.

The collagen contracture by radio frequency helps generate collagen and skin tightening. By stimulating your collagen production, you’ll glow from the inside out.

Is this treatment painful? No, the Refresh Laser Facial offers no pain or downtime.

Are any medications unsafe to take during this treatment? Clients must avoid taking antibiotics and tanning for the refresh treatments.

How long will the results last? Most patients come in at least quarterly, but many get addicted and come in monthly. Once you have achieved your skincare results, it is easy to maintain that healthy glow. Alethea Tinkle

Treating Fall Allergies and Sinus Problems Fall is in the air, and the cooler temperatures and shorter days can bring stuffy noses, sneezing, headaches, fatigue, itchy eyes, and coughing or wheezing. Another complication of fall allergies is sinus infections. If not treated properly, the symptoms associated with sinus infections can have a major impact on your quality of life.

SINUS INFECTIONS OR “SINUSITIS” Many people who believe they have the common cold may actually have a sinus infection and are self-medicating improperly. A sinus infection (also known as acute sinusitis) is an inflammation of the nasal sinuses, the hollow cavities within the cheekbones around the eyes and behind the nose. The sinuses help warm, moisten and filter the air in the nasal cavity, and the inflammation is usually triggered by inadequate draining of mucus due to colds, allergies, infections or structural problems of the nose.

SYMPTOMS OF SINUSITIS •

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT Dr. Eugene Hurwitz

Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia (770) 459-0620 www.caawg.com Dr. Eugene Hurwitz is the medical director of the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia with offices in Carrollton, Villa Rica, Breman, Newnan Emory Mid-town, Hiram, Smyrna, Peachtree City and Avenues of Forsyth.

If not treated aggressively, sinus problems can keep coming back as often as once a month. They can also cause further complications with the nose, eyes or middle ear, lasting for months, or even years. When this happens, it is often the result of an underlying problem with allergies. Treating allergies with medications and immunotherapy or allergy shots can provide a cure for these chronic problems by building up immunity to offending allergens and reducing the frequency and severity of infections and symptoms by as much as 90 percent. Once on allergy shots, allergy sufferers only rarely have symptoms or develop sinus infections.

What are the advantages of Brazilian butt augmentation versus buttock implants? Most patients prefer using their own fat to add volume and shape to their buttocks, because there is the added slimming of their waist, back, or thighs. The Brazilian butt augmentation gives the buttocks a more voluptuous shape without the large incisions required with foreign implants. It also offers lasting results and gives a natural shape to the buttocks.

What aesthetic improvement can be done by Brazilian butt augmentation? A more youthful, rounded, taut, and perky derriere can be created. Besides an “Ideal butt projection”, the saggy skin and cellulite of butt area can be eliminated.

How is the procedure done? We use a gentle liposuction technique with tiny canulas to remove fat cells, which we then insert into different layers of the buttocks through very small incisions. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and takes one to two hours. It is just as safe as the bodysulpting procedure, and it minimizes the risk of your body rejecting the fat cells.

How much fat can you take from the donor site? The amount of fat you can have transferred from donor site to your buttocks will depend on your individual aesthetic goals. Your ultimate results will usually appear smooth because we use several small incisions while evenly distributing the fat cells.

Is the procedure painful?

He is an active member of the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, the American Society of Anesthesiology, and the World Anti-Aging Academy of Medicine.

There is very little discomfort, which is easily handled by Tylenol. Patients are able to sit shortly after buttock augmentation surgery and typically return to work within days. You will need to wear a compression garment for up to two weeks, and you can resume regular exercise after two weeks.

How soon will I see results? Your results will be evident after six to eight weeks. Because a small percentage of the fat graft will not retain its volume, we usually transfer a slight excess of cells.

How to Properly Fit an Athletic Shoe Why is it important to have athletic shoes professionally fitted? Having someone fit your athletic shoe is vital to preventing injury and optimizing performance. Our Fit Specialists at New Balance Buckhead receive extensive training in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and gait analysis. After successfully completing the program, the associate becomes a PROCARE FIT SPECIALIST.

What are the most important things to look for when shopping for a new pair of running shoes? Your running shoe needs to be designed for your foot type. Whether you are an under-pronated, a neutral-pronated, or an over-pronated foot type, there are shoes designed with internal pieces to help make your gait more efficient. The three main elements I look for are: • Control in the heel There cannot be true support if the heel is not controlled • Stability in the midfoot or arch This needs to be a snug fit around the mid foot • Release in the forefoot The forefoot should be able to flex and allow your body the propulsion phase to be as efficient as possible

How does a Fit Specialist determine the right shoe? The Fit Specialist will determine your foot type and suggest the most optimal footwear for you. The Fit Specialist will utilize istep, our technologically advanced digital foot analysis system. Istep features 3,744 Gold plated barometric sensors, and 1,326 infrared LED’S that measure the three essential elements of your feet- foot size, arch type and pressure points.

Is a professional fit important just for running, or does it make a difference in all activity? Activities that require more lateral support like tennis and basketball need different shoe characteristics These athletes prefer the shoe to be more snug fitting than normally suggested. Walking shoes tend to have a more rigid midfoot than running shoes, so they will perform differently and might require some sizing adjustments.

Does a properly fitted shoe offer a better workout? A properly fitted shoe won’t do the workout for you. What it will do is reduce the chance of injury and discomfort, allowing you to maintain your regimen. It’s hard to get motivated when your feet hurt. Mark Dobbins

Expand or Explode Life is fired at us point blank! First 9/11, then the recession, now the historic downturn of the U.S. credit rating hitting us head on. As the energies on the “outside” increase, it is even more important to have YOUR energy be intact on the “inside.” Your internal foundation is crucial, how you see yourself. Now more than ever, it is imperative that you have a clear and positive self identity. As we traverse the “gauntlet of life,” we have certain interpretations and assessments about ourselves. These exist if not consciously, certainly on our subconscious level. When confronted with stressful conditions hitting us on the outside, these “old stories” we have made up about ourselves are activated. This can be dangerous. Left alone and ‘running,’ we reach a point inside that feels more and more like ‘exploding.’ The expansion necessary is getting back in touch with our “True Self.” Gaining the clarity as to what and who we are on a very deep inside level gives us assurance. This acts as a buffer and as a compass to assist us in navigating the turbulent waters that are abreast of us now. We can assist you to do this. This is the work we do.

Minimally Invasive Partial Knee Surgery

UKR vs. TKR What is a partial knee replacement, and how is it different from total joint replacement surgery? A partial knee replacement, or unicondylar knee replacement (UKR), is a surgical procedure in which only one side of the knee is replaced, as opposed to a total knee replacement (TKR), in which both sides of the knee are replaced.

Who is the right candidate for this procedure? The best candidate for a partial knee replacement is one who has arthritis in only one part of the knee. These patients are frequently in their 40s and 50s, compared to the usual total knee replacement patients who are in their 60s and 70s.

How long is the recovery time? The recovery time is usually half the time of a total knee replacement approximately six weeks. Improvements continue during the ensuing six months, but usually by six weeks the patient is ambulatory without a cane or crutch.

What should a patient look for in a doctor who performs partial knee replacement surgery? Look for a surgeon who has performed more than just a few of these surgeries, so he or she has the experience to identify possible complications and is capable of switching to a TKR should the need arise. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of planned UKR’s end up being TKR’s due to an unexpected amount of arthritis on the asymptomatic side of the knee, which is only identified at the time of surgery.

What are some benefits of partial knee replacement?

Dr. Eric Furie

It minimizes the amount of bone and cartilage resected, and it allows the patient to retain his or her ligaments. This gives the patient a more natural feeling, a more normal gait pattern, and more stability.

285 Boulevard NE, Suite 310 Atlanta, Ga 30312 (404) 522-5828 www.midtownsportsmedicine.com

Are there any risks with partial knee replacement? The risks of the partial knee replacement are significantly less than that with a total knee replacement. As with all surgeries, there is a risk of infection, and as with TKR, there is a risk of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) as well as other problems, but these risks are significantly less with the UKR.

Fighting Childhood Obesity: Be a Health Advocate for Your Children

As a parent, you are a nurturer, a teacher and a caretaker. It is also important to be a health advocate for your children. Resisting their fast food cravings and encouraging your kids to play games that exercise more than their fingers is vital to keeping them physically fit. The obesity rate among children and adolescents has climbed to 17 percent—triple the rate of just 30 years ago. While acknowledging childhood obesity may be a sensitive issue, even excess “baby fat” could put your child at risk for developing chronic medical conditions. Dr. David W. Jones, a board-certified pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente of Georgia, says it is a common misperception among parents that overweight children will “grow out of it.” Intervention is often crucial to help children maintain a healthy weight and take charge of their health.

How do I know if my child is overweight? Schedule an appointment with your child’s pediatrician, who will measure their height and weight to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI is plotted on a growth chart to determine if your child is in a healthy weight range. A child is considered overweight if their BMI is at or above the 85th percentile for their age and sex, and obese if their BMI is at or above the 95th percentile. Starting this school year, state law requires school systems to conduct a fitness assessment, which includes BMI measurement, on all students enrolled in a physical education class. Parents will receive a report on their child’s fitness level, as well as recommendations for improvement.

What are some tips for preventing or treating obesity? Consult your child’s pediatrician for a weight management regimen specific to your child. As a general guideline, remember the 5-2-1-0 message. It is recommended that children eat five servings of vegetables, spend no more than two hours in front of a screen (TV/video game/computer), exercise for one hour and consume zero sweetened beverages each day. It is also important for parents to model these healthy behaviors for their children.

What resources are available to help teach children healthy eating and exercise habits? There is a wealth of information about combating childhood obesity available online at www.kp.org and www.letsmove.gov. Kaiser Permanente also offers free and low-cost health classes for children at its medical facilities across metro Atlanta. These, and many other healthy living classes, are open to the public. Operation Zero: Weight Management for Children targets 9-17 year olds and is led by a dietician, chef and fitness instructor. The 6-session program covers eating influences, healthy eating habits, low-fat cooking, reading food labels and starting an exercise regimen. KP Fit Kids is a 45-minute exercise class that incorporates fun and games for children ages 6-12. Parents and children can learn how to prepare healthy snacks together at Snack Facts for KP Kids. For more information, visit www.kp.org/classes. David W. Jones, MD

If my child is overweight or obese, what health conditions is he/she at risk of developing?

Panola Medical Center Stonecrest Medical Center www.kp.org

Children who are overweight or obese have a greater risk of developing many chronic diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and depression. Studies also show that obese children and adolescents are more likely to have severe obesity in adulthood, which can lead to heart disease and certain cancers.

David W. Jones, MD is a board-certified pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. A graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, Jones completed his pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles

TMJ-Jaw Pain, Popping & Clicking? Does your jaw “lock up”, click or cause you pain when opened or closed or when you chew, do you have headaches that can’t seem to be diagnosed? The problem could be the temporal mandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ is formed by two bones, the skull’s temporal bone and the mandible, or jawbone. These two bones, two on each side, form the hinge-like joint called TMJ. It is the physical connection where the jaw meets the skull. The joint can become slightly out of place and cause multiple problems. Besides those mentioned above, other common symptoms can be pain when chewing, shoulder and neck stiffness, earaches, dizziness and unexplained headaches.

Often this is because TMJ dysfunction can place neurological strain on your body. Typically in TMJ syndrome the lower jaw (mandible) is extended forward. A head forward posture exaggerates the problem. This forward mandible aggravates the cervical ligament laxity, which increases the neck pain. Again an endless cycle of pain and disability is created in the neck, head, and face region. Eventually the mandible moves forward to the extent that it will stretch the lateral TMJ ligament and produce pain. Once the lateral TMJ ligament becomes lax the joint will click. It is important to note that clicking in any joint is an indication of ligament laxity of that joint. Joint clicking is never a normal or good sign. Joint clicking, whether it is in the TMJ, knee, neck, or lower back is almost always abnormal. The body’s compensatory mechanism for such a situation is to tighten muscles and to grow more bone. The end result will be degeneration, arthritis, and stiffness in that joint. A combination of Prolotherapy injections to strengthen both the cervical vertebrae and the temporomandibular (TMJ) joint combined with manipulations of the affected areas to realign the joints will often solve this problem. thegive-backguide volunteer spotlights Atlanta Humane Society By Ashley Chandler

-BACK IVE

I have been an animal lover ever since I begged and cried my way into my first kitten as a little girl. Walking along a path at my grandparent’s farm, I just couldn’t leave the tiny, stray kitten to fend for himself. Socks was his name, and he was my best friend. Since then, many animals have come and gone in my life, but their memories have not. Animals give us so much more than we will ever realize, and that compels me to give back to them. Walking through the doors at the Atlanta Humane Society, there are animals that are scared, excited, or just aloof, but they all have one thing in common; an open heart. Some come from homes that can no longer care for them, some from homes that did not care for them, and some that have never had homes. The greatest thing about animals is their ability to forgive and forget. That is instantly apparent with the animals at the Atlanta Humane Society. Once they are shown a little TLC, they will melt your heart. Not all animals are the same, and some may take a little more time than others, but they all deserve a chance. I believe animals are very much a product of their environment, so give them the right environment, and they will thrive. I have volunteered with the Atlanta Humane Society since 2007. I am currently a pre-vet student at UGA so I am unable to volunteer consistently, but when I do, it is incredibly rewarding. Too often, I find myself saying, “I don’t have time,” but then when I do volunteer I always end up asking myself, “Why don’t I do this more?” Being around these wonderful animals that ask for nothing, but offer so much gives me perspective on how I want to live my life. If you have not volunteered with animals before, I whole-heartedly recommend it. You may go in thinking you are helping the animals, but you will come out feeling like you were the one that was helped. If you do not live close to the Atlanta Humane Society in Atlanta, a new location will be opening in Alpharetta later this year. There are also many other volunteer opportunities all across the city so get out there and get involved - you won’t regret it! Visit www.atlantahumane.org for more information. The Lockhart-Morgan Foundation Sickle cell anemia is an inherited red blood cell disorder that can cause a constant shortage of red blood cells. The cause of SCD is genetic, and because of this it is extremely important to know your sickle cell status as early as possible. The Lockhart-Morgan Foundation is a non-profit organization that works hard to bring more awareness to this disease through education, events and financial support. Upcoming events include the LMF Annual Fundraising Gala on September 10, an annual fundraising event to support LMF’s continual efforts to find a cure, Sickle Cell Education Day on September 17 at The Loudermilk Center, Sickle Cell Awareness Day on September 27 at Stonecrest Mall, and Shop For A Cause with Macy’s on September 27 at Perimeter Mall. If you want to help, please contact us today to find out more about our volunteer opportunities.

Embraced Atlanta Embraced Atlanta is a charitable organization that was started in 2009 by Lauren O’ Brien. The organization takes quality unused orthopedic and prosthetic equipment, such as crutches and wheelchairs, and provides it to someone in need both here and abroad. Women and children in Africa have been the beneficiaries of the medical equipment donated to the organization, as have Atlanta’s uninsured. The organization accepts gently used equipment and donations. The next equipment-sorting day is at 9 a.m. on September 10 and October 8 at 151 14th Street. Make sure to come out to John Howell Park on October 1 to support Embraced Atlanta at Battle of the Burgers, www.battleoftheburgers.com Details: (404) 592-4569, e-mail info@embracedatlanta.org

Pay for college without going broke!

Woodstock, Ga—Metro Atlanta parents planning on sending a child to college in the next few years, but who aren’t quite sure how to pay for it can now rest a little easier. Jason Flurry, CFP® founder of the National Center For College Planning and Legacy partners Financial Group has been educating parents about what to do if they haven’t saved enough for college and retirement. ‘It’s really sad, but most parents we talk to have done really well financially, but never found the time to save for college, and now they’re facing a bill of $18,000-$50,000 a year. They don’t know who to turn to for help,’ he says. ‘Furthermore, most of the time, all they hear is to not even bother applying for any aid because they make too much money. However, most of the time, that is simply not true…even if they make a good six-figure income.’ Jason would know, because he’s worked with over 1000 families in the last 16 years ranging from single moms to corporate CEO’s, and he swears he can help anyone get through the process and save a bundle….no matter how good of a student they have or how much money they make. ‘Simply put, we show parents the truth that they aren’t hearing anywhere else about how the college process really works, and how they

can get their child into a top school easily, help that student pick a career that will suit them and pay them well, and save thousands of dollars in the process.” North Metro parents will have several opportunities to hear Jason speak. He is teaching his free class ‘How to Give Your Kid a 4-Year College Education…Without Going Broke!’ throughout the year. ‘We’ll discuss everything from the greatest myths about the college process, to how to send your student to a fancy private school for less than the cost of a junior college…it’ll be like learning how to get a brand new Lexus for the price of a used pick up truck,’ he grins. Topics will also include why private scholarships and 529 plans are a waste of time, how to double or even triple the amount of free money you receive from each school, and how to avoid the one mistake that will kill your chances of getting any money at all that almost every other parent will make this year, and much, much more. “The class is totally free, but seats usually fill up quickly. We have to turn people away or add them to a waiting list pretty often,” Flurry says. You can reserve a seat or get more info by calling (678) 388-2233 or online at www.YourCollegePlanners. com.

my journey Cyndi Sterne of Hal’s Kitchen Armed with a dream and a love for cooking, Cyndi Sterne was determined to make the idea of owning her own cooking school a reality. As the Director of Youth and Family Programming for the Marcus Jewish Community Center and then later as their Cooking School Instructor, Sterne spent several years teaching cooking classes for kids and adults at the center. While she enjoyed the experience, she found that it also served to fuel her passion for creating her own cooking school. With encouragement from her father Hal, Sterne’s dream finally came true. In July, she opened Hal’s Kitchen, which houses a wide variety of classes taught by both Sterne and culinary director Jessica Ray, and she couldn’t be happier.

What was the first dish you ever cooked on your own? Sugar cookies from my great grandmother’s recipe. My mother gave me my initial skills and comfort in the kitchen, but mostly I am a self-taught cook who really enjoys exploring cookbooks and creating dishes on my own. What was the inspiration behind Hal’s Kitchen? I was the cooking instructor for adults and children at the Marcus Jewish Community Center and really enjoyed this role and wanted to expand their program. When I found out that they didn’t want to expand their program, my father, with his well-known twinkle in his eye, gave me the motivation to open my own cooking school. What makes Hal’s Kitchen unique? We really focus on having fun while cooking, rather than keeping things regimented. I always feel that everything tastes better if you’re having fun preparing it. Also, Hal’s Kitchen is a one stop shop. You can learn your cooking skills, enjoy some food and wine, purchase a unique tool in our retail area and what’s also very different is our two kitchen studios also serve as showrooms. So if you feel comfortable using our Wolf stove, or love the way our cabinets look, you can order all of this from us too! How did you meet your culinary director Jessica Ray? I took a class from Jessica when she was Culinary Director at Viking and was really inspired by her. She and I have a similar philosophy of having fun while cooking, which unlocks so many creative juices. We are so lucky to have her at Hal’s Kitchen, which is evident by her huge following throughout Atlanta. 74

What has been the community’s response to Hal’s Kitchen? We have been so grateful how receptive everyone in the Sandy Springs and surrounding areas have been. Not only have they been signing up for classes and booking private events, but after their classes and events, they are going back to their friends and families and signing up again with them. What are typical dishes you cook at home for your family? Every Friday I make a big family dinner for my kids, brother and sister-in-law and friends are always invited. Usually there are at least 10 people. To feed so many people, I will make a roast with three or four different sides made from seasonal produce. What can people expect when they take a class at Hal’s Kitchen? They will have fun while learning valuable cooking skills. We have so many different types of classes that no matter what your passion is or what type of cuisine they are looking to learn, they leave here excited to use their news skills when they go home. How do you lead a healthy lifestyle? I find it hard to resist all of the amazing food that we cook up every day, and we are constantly testing new recipes. Even the ones that don’t turn out perfectly are usually pretty tasty! I make running and push-ups part of my nearly daily routine. Even though I taste a lot of great food, I watch how many calories I consume in a day and make sure that fresh and seasonal fruits, vegetables, and salads make up the majority of my diet. What is the best piece of advice you’ve received? Concentrate on your strengths, but more importantly, understand your weak spots. Find people be it mentors, employees, or even an accountant to make up for your deficits. For more information on Hal’s Kitchen (404) 847-6991 www.halskitchen.com

Have you always loved to cook? Yes, I loved to cook and entertain. When I was a young child, my father was home recuperating from surgery, and he and his business associates met for lunch at our home. I was given the responsibility to make lunch for this group every day and really took ownership of it and enjoyed creating new dishes every day and receiving their positive feedback. From then on, I’ve loved cooking for groups.
