A Healthy Dose of Education When it comes to tackling health issues, education can make all the difference. Local groups like Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta focus their resources not just on breast cancer support and screenings, but also on education about the disease. That’s why our Band Together Against Breast Cancer initiative is so important: the proceeds help Komen Atlanta reach even more local women with education to help them better approach their breast cancer journeys. Join the initiative by purchasing a neon pink headband for just $5. For more details, email me at sadair@bestselfatlanta.com. Education doesn’t stop with diseases like breast cancer, though. Education for men’s health issues is just as important, so Best Self Atlanta is holding our second annual Moustache Dash on Sunday, November 16. The family friendly race offers 5K and 1-mile options, and all runners are encouraged to wear moustaches (real or fake!) to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer. Visit www.bestselfatlanta.com to see photos from last year’s race, and mark your calendar for November 16. And especially at this time of year, we all remember where education starts: with teachers. As the school year gets underway, we want to recognize local teachers who work hard day in and day out to educate Atlanta’s kids. If you have suggestions of deserving teachers, please send the teacher’s name, school and brief description to Best Self editor Flannery Keck at fwinchester@bestselfatlanta.com. Your suggestions will be considered for our upcoming “Thanks for Teachers” special Thanksgiving issue.

WHY DO PEOPLE TRAVEL THOUSANDS OF MILES FOR ONE OF OUR SMILES? THE ATLANTA CENTER FOR COSMETIC DENTISTRY, founded by Dr. Debra Gray King in 1987, is one-of-a-kind haven for your smile transformation. World-renowned for enhancing the smiles of many celebrities, it has also transformed the lives of thousands of people from all walks of life, from doctors, to soccer moms, to business executives and beauty queens. The transformation process here is performed quickly, with lots of pampering, and minimally invasive techniques. Your smile and oral health are very important. If you have been thinking of enhancing your smile, you owe it to your self to seek out the best. After all, your smile is not the place for on-the-job training. To get optimal results, it takes a well-trained, experienced doctorartist. Dr. King is one of only a few dentists in the world to be an Accredited Fellow, which is the highest level of competence in the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. She also has been extensively sought out as an expert on dental trends in the media, including CBS, CNN, Fox News, The Doctors, Extreme Makeover, Entertainment Tonight, The Wall Street Journal, Time, InStyle, Vogue, Glamour, and USA Today. To arrange a consultation, or for more information, please visit our website or call. You will love your new smile!

Everyone has a story to tell. Some tell their story through their actions, dedicating time and energy to the causes close to their hearts. Others are compelled to commit their story to paper, which is exactly what Atlanta’s authors have done. From Paleo chefs and motivational moms to expert estheticians and Olympic runners, these writers share their local literature on p. 35.

Another inspirational author shares her story this month: Iyanla Vanzant. In the pages of Best Self and on stage at Oprah’s “The Life You Want Weekend” tour in September, Vanzant delves into the lessons of her past and helps Best Self’s readers understand the path to happiness. Spoiler alert: it’s not one-size-fits-all, so turn to p. 27 to find out how to apply Vanzant’s principles to your life. And one of the principles we always maintain here at Best Self is that of self-care, especially when it comes to your health. Turn to p. 47 to get the latest about prostate cancer, cervical health, this year’s flu vaccine and your kids’ healthy eating habits.

EMOTIONS

What emotions can parents expect to feel when their kids are out of the house? Some empty nesters may feel lonely, bored, sad and/ or anxious. Others may feel a sense of relief or pride. Many may feel excited about reinventing themselves. What challenges may arise during this time? For so long, their lives have revolved around their children. Now parents may struggle with regaining a sense of identity and purpose. Likewise, reconnecting as a couple may shed light on relationship concerns overshadowed by parental responsibilities. How can parents support each other emotionally? Ask for help and accept support when in need. Stay active and connected. Prioritize self-care. How can parents give appropriate emotional support to their child(ren)? Parents can encourage independence and maturity by showing children that they are confident in their abilities. Be a listening ear, but let them resolve their own roommate sagas, employer or professor conflicts and relationship issues. Just as you did when they were infants, let go so they can take a few steps on their own. Otherwise, they may not realize they can get back up on their own when they stumble or fall. www.bestselfatlanta.com

What are some tips for cooking healthy meals for fewer people? Cooking for less people means buying less food. Keep that in mind while grocery shopping and buy accordingly or else you will end up wasting food and money. How can parents maximize their time in the kitchen? Meal planning is crucial whether you are cooking for one person or 10 people. Save time by preparing part of your meals on the weekend: make small individual salads for each day of the week, marinate meats ahead of time and bake some healthy granola bars or muffins for a quick grab-and-go breakfast. How can parents break out of old meal routines? Try new recipes that you once steered away from because “the children would not like it.” Explore new foods and seasonings. And don’t rush – there are no school or sporting events that you have to run off to after dinner. How can parents throw a fun, healthy, adults-only dinner party? Invite every guest to bring a dish using a seasonal vegetable they have never cooked before, and pair it with a fresh juiced cocktail. This encourages everyone to try new recipes and foods.

How can parents expect their sex lives to change when the kids are out of the house? It is hard to crank an engine that has been sitting idle for too long. Don’t wait until the kids are gone to rekindle the romance. Start now. An empty house is not going to create a romantic life that doesn’t already exist. What tips can help parents connect better during this time? Select a new activity or hobby to participate in, such as hiking, dancing, or taking an art class together. When you have focused on the kids for too long, sometimes you forget how to talk to each other in a way that connects you. Adding an activity will help the bonding and the conversation, which will deepen your connection. What issues in the bedroom might surprise parents during this time? Couples are often surprised by the fact that their bodies are different. Many couples develop a sexual dance over the years: I do this, you do that, and presto – fireworks. Often in later years, the “this and that” no longer produce fireworks, and couples feel lost. At this stage of the game, couples really have to slow down and relearn what touches excite each other now. Forget sex at 20. Sex at 60 is better!

How can parents expect their home décor to change when the kids are out of the house? Homes stay cleaner once parents become empty nesters. It is easier to keep things in place once busy schedules, homework and muddy shoes are not factors! What are some updates empty nesters could consider for their living space? Review your interests, and literally make space for them. Perhaps this means converting the old playroom or basement into a theater, home gym, meditation zone, sewing center, dance floor, wine cellar or craft room. Parents have grown just as their children have, which makes this an exciting opportunity to refine and redefine. If it is time to downsize, how can parents start the process? Downsizing is a great way to start a new phase of life. Evaluate your possessions and consider your children. What would they want, use, need or enjoy of your furniture or personal effects? Do you have things that no longer have any sentimental or useful value to you? Many organizations welcome donations. Getting rid of the clutter will make your home much more attractive and energizing. Plus, it will prepare you for a future relocation.

How can parents reorganize or repurpose areas of the house now that the kids are gone? Wait a bit before you reorganize closets and rooms. Give yourself time to evaluate your priorities and lifestyle, and consider what will make the most sense. A guest bedroom? A workout room? An office? The Georgia Chapter of the National Association of Professional Organizers (www. napogeorgia.com) can help. How can parents reorganize their schedules when the kids are out of the house? Sort out the types of new projects you will want to participate in. On a calendar (paper or electronic), put in your working hours, meetings and other fixed obligations. Then you can fill in the remaining time with your new projects. What are some tips for adjusting to the new schedule? Stay busy. Plunge into new activities. With evenings and weekends free, there is more time to do these things and more space to do it in. Is there anything parents should avoid doing with all this free time? Yes. Avoid thinking and talking about the kids 24/7. Keep reminding yourself that you raised your child or children to be independent. You have achieved your goals. Enjoy your newfound freedom.

Home Away From Home When you’re recovering from surgery, whether it is heart surgery, cancer treatment or even a cosmetic procedure, there’s no place like home. Salude has room service, concierge services, a nutritionist, a chef, therapists and medical professionals on staff to ramp up your recovery. Healthy and tasty ideas to nourish your body

Vegan Sweet Potato Soup As we enter sweet potato season, it’s tempting to toss them all in a sweet potato casserole. Before you do that, try this healthy, simple soup from local catering company Epicurean Endeavors. With just the right blend of spices and natural sugars, this dish will help you save the sweet potato casserole till Thanksgiving. Ingredients: 1 tbsp. grape seed oil 1 small yellow onion, diced 3 tbsp. minced ginger 1 tbsp. curry powder 1 lb. sweet potato, peeled and diced 1 small apple, peeled and diced 3 sprigs of fresh thyme 5 cups vegetable stock 1/2 cup coconut milk 2 tbsp. pure maple syrup Salt and pepper to season

Add the onions, ginger, curry powder, sweet potato and apple, seasoning with salt and pepper. Cook contents for five minutes, stirring continuously. Add the thyme and vegetable stock to the pot. Bring contents to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer.

Allow everything to cook until the vegetables are tender. This will take approximately 30 minutes. Remove the thyme sprigs and use an immersion blender or food processor to purée the soup until smooth. You can reserve some of the sweet potato and apple for garnish, if you choose. Finish the soup by stirring in the coconut milk and maple syrup. Check seasoning and add salt and pepper to taste. – Courtesy of Epicurean Endeavors, www.epicureanatl.com

Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean the garden slows down! Sign up for the Organic Farming and Gardening course at Cane Creek Farm, taught by farmer Lynn Pugh. Putting to use her farm experience and background in biology and plant pathology, Pugh guides students through the basics of crop planning, soil biology and organic practices. All levels of experience are welcome in this class, and you’ll soon recoup the $475 registration cost by growing your own groceries. This fall, the course dates include September 13 and 27, October 11 and 25, and November 8, 15 and 22.

September often brings with it a case of the sniffles, or worse, the flu. It’s hard to do much for a sick kid off at college or a friend in another state, but Spoonful of Comfort is making it easier. This service allows you to order and send a jar of homemade chicken noodle soup right to your loved one’s door. The classic get-well dish includes chicken, noodles, carrots, celery, onion, sage, parsley and sea salt, and it is prepared in small batches without preservatives, just as you would make it at home. You can also customize your care package to include a handwritten note, made-from-scratch rolls, chamomile tea and even a cozy pair of socks. Package prices range from $24.99 to $89.99.

Explore new ways to get more out of life

Strut Your Stuff Nothing perks people up like pets. It’s hard not to smile when faced with a wagging tail, a cute trick or a crazy costume, so all of these elements make for the perfect fundraising event. On September 6, local charity group Sweetwater Mission is hosting the first Marietta Mutt Strutt, a dog parade open to canine participants of all sizes. At 10 a.m. on that Saturday, join an expected 1,500 attendees at Marietta First United Methodist Church. Registered dogs strut their stuff in the parade beginning at 11:30, and costumes are encouraged. Your dressy dog could win in categories such as Pet/ Owner Look-Alike, School Spirit, At the Movies and others. If your pup isn’t crowd-friendly, enter them in the “People’s Choice Award” category by posting a photo on the Marietta Mutt Strutt Facebook page. Costume contest winners receive prizes from Costco, which include new dog beds. In addition to the parade, the Marietta Mutt Strutt offers plenty of other activities until 3 p.m. Swing by the Bone Bar to scoop up free treats for your dog, and cheer on the participants in the adorable Dachshund races. Shop at any of the 60 vendor booths while enjoying the day’s soundtrack of live bluegrass music performed by the Cherokee Cut Ups. If you’re considering adding another pup to your pack, visit the eight local rescue groups who will be there with adoptable dogs. Parking and admission are free, and registration to walk your dog in the parade begins at $20 per dog and rises to $30 on the day of the event. The proceeds go to Sweetwater Mission, the newly named partnership of Our Father’s Hands and Christian Aid Mission Partnership, which supports homeless and low-income neighbors by providing clothes, food, education and other crucial resources. And their good work doesn’t stop there – with this event, they’re spreading smiles to everyone who attends this four-legged day of fun.

Tri to Relax

Local Art with Foreign Flair

Triathlons are no joke – all that running, biking and swimming are not for the faint of heart or the weak of body. On Sunday, September 28 in Atlanta, a new type of triathlon aims to challenge your mind as well. The Wanderlust 108, also known as a “mindful triathlon,” still includes a 5K run, but it swaps the cycling and swimming for a meditation session and a 90-minute yoga class. The 5K course winds through Piedmont Park before the meditation and yoga portions take place, led by Sage Rountree, an expert in yoga for athletes, and Atlanta yoga teachers Neda Honarvar and Octavia Raheem. Early bird tickets start at $48.

Atlanta artist Cynthia Perryman and former Atlanta resident Jessie Mackay will showcase their art and the art of their students at The Art School in Sandy Springs this month. While traveling to France this summer, the group created paintings of the French countryside and towns for this exhibit titled “Dreams of France: Old and New.” The show will include their paintings, photos and drawings for viewing and purchase, as well as the works of other local artists Wanda Hopkins and Jane Scott. The show begins on September 20 with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. and is open through September 28 from 1 to 7 p.m. each day.

Do men have vein problems too? Yes, men have vein problems and are notorious for waiting until they are in a great deal of pain before seeking treatment. When the pain hurts their golf game or their ability to rest, men come for help. We urge our female patients to get their husbands in as soon as possible, as earlier treatment ensures a higher quality of life for many years, helping patients maintain a healthier program of exercise and sleep.

I don’t smoke, but I’ve had a cough for several weeks now. What could be the cause? In non-smokers, three main diseases are usually responsible for a chronic cough. The first is asthma, which can start in childhood or adulthood. Asthma can be associated with allergy, exercise, non-allergy, or just manifest as a cough with no other associated symptoms. The second cause is postnasal drainage, which irritates the lining of the upper and lower airways and results in sore throat and cough. The final possible cause is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or heartburn. GERD occurs when stomach contents travel upward into the esophagus and irritate the nerves of the esophagus that can trigger the cough reflex.

As I get older, I’ve noticed that my eyelashes are thinning. I don’t want to bother with lash extensions, but I have heard of Latisse. What is it, and what does it do?

a

Latisse is a prescription treatment used to grow longer, thicker and darker eyelashes. It is an FDA-approved solution that is applied nightly to the upper lash line. What my patients like best is that the improvement is made to their own lashes. The solution works gradually, and while you may see longer lashes after just four weeks, results continue to improve up to 16 weeks. Once the desired look is achieved, I have patients apply the solution two to three times a week for maintenance.

Is running a marathon dangerous for my heart? Currently, there is no definitive data that implicates marathon running as dangerous for your heart. In fact, for those healthy enough to train for and run a marathon, there are clearly both mental and physical benefits. If you are interested in running a marathon, first consult your doctor or sports cardiologist to ensure you are physically fit enough to embark on a training regimen, and then go out and enjoy your long runs.

Q

How can I make the most of the time I have with my doctors? Bring a complete list of your allergies, medicines and dosages, either by writing them down, taking photos of the bottles on your phone or bringing them to the appointment. Start a health journal for each member of the family, and write down your top three concerns. Bring that journal to the appointment and make notes to help you remember what the doctor said. If you don’t understand, ask. Never feel embarrassed or shy about asking for clarification about something the doctor says. The best health care is when the patient and the doctor are on the same page.

n these days of smart phones and ubiquitous Wi-Fi, it’s never been easier to hop online and find everything from healthy recipes to at-home workouts to relationship advice. But somehow, even the best Pinterest boards and most inspiring Instagram accounts don’t always lead you to the life you want. So where do you turn? Iyanla Vanzant, star of OWN’s “Iyanla: Fix My Life” and member of Oprah’s upcoming “The Life You Want Weekend” tour, may have answers.

Though it’s tempting to want happiness to be as simple and straightforward as a “top 10” article, Vanzant admits that it’s not that easy. In her 25 years of ministry, her time on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and now her own series, she has realized that when it comes to helping people live a good life, “There is no formula. I can’t say do this, do that, do this.” This is partly because the guests on her show have widely

varied backgrounds. She gives therapeutic support to people dealing with everything from absent parents to substance abuse to pain from past relationships. Because of those differences, Vanzant says all she can do is show the way through her own personal story. “What I speak about is what I’ve learned from experience or what I am learning from experience,” she explains. And experience is something Vanzant has in abundant supply. Poverty, abuse and teen motherhood characterized her early life, but in her twenties, she knew something had to give. In the no-nonsense fashion that makes her show so compelling, she simply made a choice to change her life. She remembers thinking, “I am going to continue to do what I am doing, feel like I’m feeling, or I am going to choose something different.” Ultimately, she chose something different, recognizing, “There is something bigger and greater than just my human frailty that I want to rely on.” She started her new life and new spiritual journey by taking a new name, changing from her given name “Rhonda” to “Iyanla,” which means “great mother” in Yoruba. This transition helped her redefine herself in a healthier light, and it paved the way for more positive changes, eventually leading to a regular appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” as a relationship expert. In 1998, she began providing her tough-love expertise on the show and helped guide guests and viewers to fuller, happier relationships. During that time on the show, Vanzant says she realized, “No matter who you are talking to, no matter what you are doing, it is either a reflection of you or a reflection of God.” So during her service as a relationship expert, Vanzant herself was continuing down her own path of self-acceptance, healing and greater understanding. Vanzant was also enjoying a successful publishing career, penning best-selling books such as “One Day My Soul Just Opened Up” and “In the Meantime.” She was headed for the top of the world, but soon her vision got further out of reach. A divorce from her husband, a cancer diagnosis for her daughter, a declaration of bankruptcy and an abrupt split from her partnership with Oprah led to dark times in her life. She remembers wondering, “Why am I asking for this, praying for this, wanting this, and it is not showing up?” But as Vanzant now believes, life isn’t just about wishing for what you want. “It’s not just ‘ask for this’ or ‘hope for that,’” she says. Instead, creating the life you want “is a function of your consciousness, which requires faith and trust and belief. If you’re asking for something but not believing you’re going to have it, then you are not going to manifest it.” These difficult times brought with them spiritual lessons for Vanzant, which she used to better craft the life she wanted. One of her first steps to achieving that life was forgiveness, and forgiveness on a grand scale. “Forgive everybody for everything,” Vanzant says. “One of the reasons we don’t have the life we want, don’t have the joy, the love and the things we want, is because we are holding onto hurts, wounds and anger.” Another step

to achieving the life you want is thinking higher. “Think higher of ourselves, think higher of everyone else,” Vanzant says. “You are not your bad behavior. You are not your current circumstances. We just have to learn to think higher.” These spiritual truths have served Vanzant throughout her life, bringing her out of her challenging past all the way to her renewed relationship with Oprah and her recent 25th anniversary in ministry.

2678 Buford Hwy NE Atlanta, GA 30324 Along with Oprah and other influential thought leaders, Vanzant will go in depth with these lessons and more at the first stop of Oprah’s “The Life You Want Weekend” tour, right here in Atlanta on September 5 and 6. Whether you need to heal from past hurt, forgive a loved one or simply want to live a better life overall, Vanzant’s message can help. A Running Start for A Runner’s Diet

Stock your shelves with works from these local authors!

Life enrichment Kim Bearden

“Crash Course” Kim Bearden is the cofounder and executive director of Atlanta’s Ron Clark Academy, where she also teaches language arts. Recently, she was honored with the Disney American Teachers Award as an Outstanding Middle School Humanities Teacher. Having taught more than 3,000 students over the past 30 years, this is Bearden’s tale of what she learned while teaching others.

As a self-described “fat, lazy kid who hated exercise,” Jeff Galloway never imagined that he would make a living out of what ultimately became his lifelong passion: running. A former Olympian (on the 1972 U.S. team in the 10,000 meters) and a world-renowned consultant, trainer and coach, Galloway not only has introduced millions of people to his acclaimed “Run Walk Run” method, but he also has written 25 books on the topic of running since 1983, including the best-selling “Galloway’s Book on Running.” In April 2014, Meyer & Meyer Sport released Galloway’s most recent tome, “Nutrition for Runners.” Offering a detailed program that helps runners change their nutrition so they can meet their training goals and perform their best, “Nutrition for Runners” is presented in a direct and easy-to-understand way. According to Galloway, who co-wrote the book with esteemed registered dietitian Nancy Clark, “Whenever you set out on a quest to test yourself physically, you look for every way you can improve your performance. And there’s an awareness among runners that you need to watch your diet. You need to have certain nutrients every day. Your running is not as good when you don’t have that. So we tell runners how to set up a cognitive plan for eating and exercise. We tell them, ‘Here’s what works, here’s what we suggest and here’s how to put it together.’”

Photo courtesy of Daniel Menacher (top)

“Nutrition for Runners” is full of extensively researched scientific information, but what really sets it apart is the fact that Galloway and Clark each bring their own perspective to the book. Clark tells runners what to eat and when to eat it; Galloway looks at the big picture and educates runners about exercise and how it relates to eating, as well as the mental side of exercise and eating. The co-authors spent eight months writing the book, and the result is unlike anything on the market today. “I don’t know of any other book that covers the complete gamut of nutritional and running issues and explains what is going on behind the scenes in the brain,” Galloway notes. “And anybody who has questions can email me. That is a service that we offer from the book.” In fact, connecting with runners has become one of Galloway’s most cherished activities. Communicating with hundreds of people daily, as well as thousands more through his 200 running clinics held annually, Galloway has found a calling of sorts. “My original reason for writing the first book, and then continuing, was to help people improve their quality of life,” concludes Galloway, who will host the inaugural Jeff Galloway 13.1 half marathon on Sunday, December 14, in Atlanta. “Running initially seemed simple – putting one foot in front of the other. But as I have continued to evolve my method, I keep finding things that make it easier. My mission in all of my projects is to make running easier for people yet allow them to get every bit of empowerment and satisfaction out of the experience.” www.bestselfatlanta.com

Becky Blalock

Daring to Change the Way Women Think When Becky Blalock retired as Chief Information Officer of Southern Co. in 2011, capping off an unparalleled 33-year career as the first female CIO of one of the largest utility companies in the world, she knew exactly what she wanted to do. “I knew that if I ever had the time, I would write a book,” Blalock says. “As I climbed the corporate ladder, women were always asking me, ‘What’s the secret sauce? What’s the silver bullet?’ The truth is, there isn’t one. It’s a series of things that you need to do to be successful. And I knew that one of these days I’d share what I’ve learned.” That book – “Dare: Straight Talk on Confidence, Courage, and Career for Women in Charge” – was published by Jossey-Bass, a brand of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., in October of 2013. Written as a way to mentor those in her immediate circle, including top-level female executives, Blalock’s best-selling book guides readers through taking bold steps in their careers and breaking through the glass ceiling. Blalock not only shares her own indispensable guidance, but also advice from nearly 30 other highly successful female business leaders. “One of the central themes of the book is confidence,” Blalock explains. “Everybody suffers with confidence issues. It’s natural to feel that way, but you have to act anyway. You can’t let fear hold you back. It’s also hard to be something you’ve never seen before. Fortunately, there are many role models now for women.”

Photo courtesy of Josh Hobgood (top)

Of course, when Blalock began at Atlanta-based Southern Co., there were no females who had reached the C-suite level with executive titles like chief executive officer and chief operating officer. In fact, she began her career with the company in accounting. When she voluntarily took a two-level demotion to move out of finance and into marketing, she caught the attention of company executives. “I diversified my skill set, and I got onto their radar screen,” she recalls. “It was the best move I could have made.” Eventually, the CEO of the company offered her a job in the IT organization. “I didn’t have the skills or knowledge to work there. But I had business knowledge they didn’t have,” Blalock points out. It was during this time in IT when she learned to be a true leader, which involved surrounding herself with exceptional people and empowering them to do their jobs well. After her retirement, it took two years and a significant overhaul of her original manuscript to bring “Dare” to fruition. And while she technically is retired, the book has opened new doors of opportunity that she never expected, from speaking to college women across the country to giving presentations for major corporations. “This all happened by accident,” Blalock muses. “I really didn’t even expect to get published. But my timing was perfect. There are many books by men about leadership, but not books by women who are practitioners. I lived this. I know how it feels.” It’s important to note that “Dare” is not only for women in corporate America; it’s for anyone striving to reach a professional goal. “Only you can define what success means for you. You just have to figure out what it is that you want,” she concludes. “I think as human beings we underestimate what is possible. Confidence is a learned skill. Put yourself out there. Surround yourself with people who think you can do it, and you’ll become unstoppable. There isn’t anything we can’t do.” www.bestselfatlanta.com

Charles and Julie Mayfield

Laura Kronen

“Too Sweet: The Not-SoSerious Side to Diabetes” Laura Kronen, a local life coach, reveals her personal journey with type 1 diabetes in this book, available on September 15.

A Healthy Spin on Comfort Food

Fried chicken. Sawmill gravy and biscuits. Beef stew. Fried green tomatoes. Decadent chocolate cake. Dishes like these can only be called one thing: comfort food. But Charles and Julie Mayfield want them to be called something else as well: healthful. That’s why they spent hundreds of hours in their own kitchen testing recipes for their first book, “Paleo Comfort Foods: Homestyle Cooking for a Gluten-Free Kitchen.” The result is a collection of starters, entrees, side dishes and desserts that will make even the most skeptical food lover want to find out what the Paleo movement is all about. “Our starting point with Paleo grew out of fitness,” explains Charles, who, along with wife Julie, owns and manages CrossFit Vinings and Atlanta Strength & Conditioning. “We both were very actively involved in outdoor fitness programs, and we were always coaching clients on nutrition. We were heavily in favor of the Zone Diet protocol, but we ultimately made the leap to eating Paleo.” That transition was shepherded by Robb Wolf, Paleo expert and best-selling author of “The Paleo Solution.” The couple met Wolf, who really brought the Paleo lifestyle into the mainstream, in the spring of 2009. His adherence to eating real, unprocessed foods – lean proteins, fruits and vegetables and healthy fats – captivated Charles and Julie. “This is the modern Paleo movement. It’s just about eating real food and taking away processed things that adversely affect our health. We stick to nutrient-rich foods that don’t have an ingredient list – foods that your grandmother would recognize. It’s also about avoiding gluten-based grains, dairy and sugar,” Julie notes.

Photo courtesy of Mark Adams (top)

The Mayfields loved the way they felt when they switched to a Paleo lifestyle; Julie mentions sleeping better, having more energy and even looking better. Despite those benefits, they still yearned for the comfort foods they enjoyed so much. Both avid home cooks, the couple decided to adapt some of their favorite dishes that would normally be off-limits for someone on a Paleo diet. They spent more than a year coming up with new twists on recipes for their own dining pleasure, often discussing them with Robb Wolf. When he suggested that they write a cookbook for his publisher, they had no idea what would come of it. In 2010, there weren’t really any cookbooks for Paleo enthusiasts. Besides that, neither Charles nor Julie had any writing experience. However, within a day of Wolf mentioning the opportunity, Victory Belt Publishing contacted the Mayfields to get the ball rolling. In fall 2011, after they compiled an impressive array of recipes, “Paleo Comfort Foods” was released. The reception for the book was overwhelming. It debuted at number 37 on Amazon and spent time on the Top 100 list of cookbooks. “It was a great reference for people who wanted nutrient-dense food but also wanted those dishes that were missing from their lives,” Julie says. Charles adds, “We’re home cooks, not classically trained chefs. And that resonated with our audience. We said, ‘If we can do this, you can do this.’” The couple, who now have an almost two-year-old and a newborn, took it a step further for their readers when they released “Quick & Easy Paleo Comfort Foods” in September of 2013 through Harlequin Nonfiction. With 30-minute meal ideas and such recipes as Salisbury steak and fried chicken tenders, it’s the perfect companion cookbook for busy families who want to live the Paleo lifestyle. “We’re both working full-time jobs, and we’re able to cook these meals. This is entirely doable,” Julie reveals. “And it’s very exciting to know that there are people who are appreciative of our recipes and that we’re helping them.” Charles continues, “It’s amazing. We’re very fortunate and blessed to have this opportunity. And the most gratifying part has been the feedback from folks out there. We never dreamed that the books would do so well.”

Missy Wallen-Nichols

The Science Behind Skin Care When Lyn Ross, L.M.E., founder of Atlanta’s celebrated Institut’ DERMed Clinical Skincare, wrote her first book, “Your Guide to Beautiful Skin at Any Age,” she knew that she had created something no one else had. “There are other books on skin care out there, but typically they’re written by doctors. There aren’t any books from a professional aesthetician,” says Ross, a licensed master aesthetics educator and a recognized pioneer in the cosmeceutical skin care industry. “I wanted to base my book on my level 101 training modules for licensed professionals. I wanted to educate readers about how to take care of their skin at home, teach them how to do a self skin analysis and identify the best ingredients that target their individual skin needs and issues.” With a retail spa in Buckhead, a successful wholesale and distribution division and a licensed aesthetician certification training program, Ross has lived and breathed skin care for the last four decades. The amount of knowledge she has garnered from creating her own skin care product line and serving clients one-on-one is unrivaled, and she has generously shared that expertise with professionals for many years. But she entered new territory when she decided to take that professional knowledge to readers everywhere. “I had to simplify what can be a very complex subject,” Ross notes. “I had to take key pieces of information from a complex training manual and put it in consumer-friendly language. That really was a challenge. It’s not a dermatology textbook. It’s a skin care guide. And I wanted people to read the material and have a better understanding of different skin types, how skin conditions happen, how to treat them and why they should use certain products.” That focus on products and the science behind them sets “Your Guide to Beautiful Skin at Any Age” apart. Because the skin care industry has virtually exploded with product offerings in recent years, it can be practically impossible to choose the right products. Ross is determined to help her readers identify the best botanical and cosmeceutical ingredients for their needs, from anti-aging products to those for discolored or acne-prone skin. Ross explains, “I want to help people figure out what is best for them in the big wide world of so many options and choices. Having that reference guide, and having it come from right here in Atlanta, that was a real dream of mine.” When she thought about publishing her book, Ross decided that she wanted to maintain as much control over the process as possible and truly own the book. That’s when one of her clients, Katherine Phelps, CEO of Beautiful Media, LLC, offered her an ideal option: self-publishing. “This is a book based on my professional experience. I didn’t want to sell the rights away,” Ross says. “But this wasn’t anything I had done before. I didn’t know the process. Having her guide me through it made all the difference. Life just puts people in your path at the right time. I would work on sections, and she would help me with the editing. Then I worked with a graphic designer. To watch the words, the images, the colors, the type of paper and everything that goes into creating this type of product come together – it’s such a sense of accomplishment. It’s so exciting.” “Your Guide to Beautiful Skin at Any Age” was released in 2011 and is available through Institut’ DERMed. The book has been so popular that Ross has had to reorder it twice. She’s even working on her second book, and that fills her with a sense of intense pride. “This is like leaving a legacy of the work that I have been committed to for the last 40 years,” she concludes. “I have a passion for skin care. For people to be able to pick up this reference guide and get clear, concise information is so rewarding.”

DREAMS Can Come True

On the outside, Kristie Salerno Kent looks like any typical wife and mother of two. In the morning, she takes her son to preschool and plays with her younger daughter when they get home. In the evening, she makes dinner with her family and maybe takes an after-dinner stroll. But what’s happening on the inside is something completely different: her battle with multiple sclerosis (MS), an often debilitating neurological disease. “I want to be out there with my kids playing on the playground, taking walks and making dinner for the family – things that I think a lot of people possibly take for granted, but I definitely don’t. I treasure being able to pick up the toys all over my house. I can bend down, I can pick those things up, I can put them away,” says Kent, who was diagnosed with MS in 1999. “Sometimes I have to remind myself to treasure that. But right now I feel blessed that I’m able to be very active.” It wasn’t always that way. Kent, who began experiencing symptoms of MS – from loss of balance to a pinsand-needles sensation in her hands to temporary paralysis from the waist down – while she was studying musical theater at Syracuse University, initially lived in denial and virtually ignored her diagnosis until 2003, shortly before her wedding to her high school sweetheart. “From 1999 to 2003, I tried my best to pretend that nothing was wrong and hide certain symptoms,” she explains. “What ended up happening was that I fell while walking home from a neighbor’s house. The left side of my body just kind of collapsed. That was a point when I thought, ‘You can’t deny this anymore.’” Her perspective shifted that day, because as Kent says, “I couldn’t change the diagnosis, but I could potentially change how I look at it and what I did about it.” Kent writes about how she faced MS head on and ultimately achieved her childhood dreams of becoming a singer, performer and mother in her recently released book, “DREAMS: My Journey with Multiple Sclerosis.” The inspirational work earned the Books for a Better Life Award in March 2014 from the National MS Society. Now a renowned patient advocate and author, Kent notes, “I hope that the book is a testimony to other people. If you follow your own passion, whatever it is – it can be something as simple as watching your children grow up or cooking dinner with your family or painting – if you focus on that and not let the disease drag you down, you’ll see that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Charles McNair

“Pickett’s Charge” McNair’s tale, which is both comical and tragic, features a Civil War veteran who breaks out of his senior living home to kill the last Union soldier.

Jamie Quatro

“I Want to Show You More” Quatro, who currently resides in Lookout Mountain, uses this 15-story collection to reveal the lives, secrets and passions of citizens of the new American South.

Josh Russell

“A True History of the Captivation, Transport to Strange Lands, and Deliverance of Hannah Guttentag” Russell serves as co-director of Georgia State University’s creative writing program. His story follows Hannah Guttentag in the early 1900s through her travels.

Karin Slaughter

“Cop Town” A longtime resident of Atlanta, Slaughter has been internationally published in almost 30 languages. “Cop Town,” released last year, is the story of a vicious murder, a divided police force and a city in crisis.

Natasha Trethewey

“Thrall” U.S. Poet Laureate and Emory faculty member Trethewey penned this poetry collection exploring her personal and historical interracial roots.

The award-winning book is the culmination of Kent’s extensive creative journey through MS, which has included the recording and release of her solo debut album, “Believe,” which features highly personal songs inspired by entries from her personal journal, as well as the creation of the short film “The Show Must Go On,” in which she visited malls in Atlanta and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to illustrate the everyday challenges faced by someone living with MS. Though all of these projects felt highly personal to Kent, she realized the importance of sharing her story with others. “It was a scary thing to do because it’s like sharing your personal, innermost thoughts with everyone,” she asserts. “But at the same time, I thought if I could help one person feel like they’re not alone, then that would be mission accomplished.”

Karen White

Through her relationship with Acorda Therapeutics, for whom she is a spokesperson, Kent is able to offer her story as a free e-book online. It’s her way of reaching so many people who are facing the same experiences she has tackled and overcome since her diagnosis 15 years ago. “I realized that opening up and sharing, just being myself and being honest about the challenges I was facing, was so freeing. Those challenges – now they’re not obstacles. They’re stepping stones.”

“A Place at the Table” Born and raised in Atlanta, White has made her way onto the list of “10 Authors from Georgia You Should Read Now” from “Paste Magazine.” This book features three outcasts who meet in a Manhattan café and realize they have to change the way they are living.

Prostate Cancer Breakthroughs

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month www.bestselfatlanta.com

In the last few years, we have made great strides with prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Not only have we developed a better understanding of the cellular and genetic behavior of these rogue cells in a laboratory setting, but we have also applied this research to managing every stage of this cancer. Whether it’s diagnosed as a small tumor isolated to the prostate or as an advanced stage cancer in multiple areas of the body, we can address each stage better than ever. To fully understand the significance of our advancements, one must look back 20 years to the Human Genome Project. In the early 1990s, scientists began decoding the entire human DNA. They successfully unraveled the code, which was more than three billion items long and represented more than 20 thousand human genes! Today, we can send a tissue sample from a prostate biopsy to a specialized lab to determine if an individual patient’s prostate cancer contains genes that would make it more aggressive. As a result, we can often determine which patients need more involved treatment and which patients may not need any treatment at all.

In the past, for those patients unfortunate enough to develop cancer that had spread to other areas of the body, there was only one reasonable treatment option: hormone deprivation therapy. By depleting the body of testosterone, prostate cancer cells would decrease in number, but only for a limited period of time. We now have two new categories of treatment to offer men once the hormone therapy stops working: immunotherapy and targeted chemotherapy. Immunotherapy involves removing the white blood cells from a unit of blood that the patient donates. A modified version of these white blood cells is then re-infused, thereby manipulating their immune system so that it specifically attacks the prostate cancer cells. Targeted chemotherapy, although still in its infancy, is a type of chemotherapy that destroys prostate cancer cells based on their unique genetic makeup as compared to normal cells.

Recent advancements in prostate “ cancer research have allowed us to treat beyond what the human eye can see. ”  Dr. Scott Miller, Georgia Urology

Detecting prostate cancer poses several challenges. Some cancers are difficult to find. Some are more aggressive than others. The extent of disease can sometimes be difficult to determine. To help with these challenges, we now have a more advanced method for performing an MRI scan of the prostate. The machines are now much faster and more powerful. As a result, they can measure how the prostate cells process a substance injected into the veins. As it turns out, cancer cells and normal cells behave differently in a way that an MRI can measure. This test can also help determine the extent of the cancer and even guide a needle to biopsy the suspicious cells directly. For the patient who undergoes treatment for earlydiagnosed prostate cancer, recent advancements have led to a decrease in side effects. Robotic prostate removal has allowed other “add-on” technologies. For instance, nerves responsible for erectile and urinary function are often hidden from the surgeon. A nerve-monitoring device incorporated into the robotic surgical system can now help identify these nerves on the surgeon’s video display. For those patients who choose radiation therapy, the current technology delivers more of the beam to the prostate and less to the surrounding tissues responsible for vital functions. These recent advancements in prostate cancer research have allowed us to treat beyond what the human eye can see, helping yesterday’s imagination become today’s reality. www.bestselfatlanta.com

besthealth Raising Healthy Eaters By Stephanie Walsh, MD

When your child eats right, her body grows stronger, her brain becomes more alert and she is generally happier. Healthy eating habits provide lifelong rewards, in terms of both improved health and happiness. Getting kids to think beyond mac ‘n’ cheese, however, can be a real challenge. The good news is that you have the ability to change your family’s habits. Kids are imitators; when they see us eating right, they follow suit. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy occasional treats – just do so in moderation. Next, minimize power struggles by understanding the “Ps and Cs.” It’s a parent’s job to plan, prepare and provide nutritious foods. It’s a kid’s job to choose whether, what and how much to eat.

Help kids eat well at every age! Infants/Toddlers: Recognize Hunger Children instinctively know when they’re hungry, so follow their lead. Help kids stay tuned in to their hunger cues by: • Breastfeeding. You can’t overfeed an exclusively breastfed baby, so feel free to nurse when and as long as the baby wants.

Orange Theory_1-2h.indd 1 www.bestselfatlanta.com

0914_046-057_HEALTH.indd 53

• Trusting your toddler’s appetite. If your toddler is growing, she’s eating enough. • Seeing the big picture. Your child’s diet balances out over several days.

Elementary School: Plan Ahead, Get Kids Cooking Busy schedules call for advanced meal planning, but it doesn’t have to be a total chore. • Involve kids in planning/making meals. They’re more likely to eat foods they prepare. • Stock easy, quick meal options like frozen veggies, wholegrain pasta and low-fat cheese. • Use snacks as mini-meals, not filler. Keep healthy grab-andgo foods accessible.

Middle School and Beyond: Reinforce Healthy Habits Parental influence still matters! • Eat together and at home whenever possible, and keep modeling good habits. • Don’t restrict foods; it will likely backfire. • Praise your child’s healthy behaviors and choices, not their weight. One of the best means of changing your family’s habits is you. For more tools and support, visit www.strong4life.com.

besthealth Cervical Health Get vaccinated. The numbers of cervical cancer deaths have dropped dramatically – almost 70 percent – since 1955, but it is still a concern for women today. According to Dr. Margarett Ellison from North Fulton Women’s Oncology, “Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by infection with particular strains of the human papillomavirus.” This sexually transmitted virus now has an FDA-approved vaccine, which is recommended for both males and females before the onset of sexual activity. Even those who are already sexually active may still receive some benefit from the HPV vaccine.

Make the appointment. Regular Pap smears and HPV tests can detect and analyze precancerous cells. Dr. Giuseppe Del Priore, the national director of gynecologic oncology at Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, recommends, “Pap smears and HPV tests for women between 21 and 65 should be scheduled once every one to three years.” Follow up. If your doctor detects and removes precancerous cells, you may encounter some difficulty with conception afterward, says Dr. Mark Perloe from Georgia Reproductive Specialists. “There is a significant risk of a weakened cervix,” he says. “Your physician should monitor cervical length, and if it appears to be shortened, a cervical cerclage stitch may be placed to reduce the risk of early delivery.” Ask your doctor about these tests and procedures that can help maintain your cervical and overall health.

To V. (vaccinate)or not to V. – That Is The Question Although cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, its incidence in the United States has seen a dramatic decline over the past 70 years since Pap smears have been used regularly for cervical cancer detection. This is an example of how a screening test, when properly implemented, can lead to dramatic results.

99% of all cervical cancer is caused by the HPV virus. Armed with this information, it has been recommended that all women over age 30 be screened with not only a Pap smear, but a highrisk HPV screening test. What is HPV? Who is at risk? Who should be tested? What is the difference between high-risk and low-risk HPV? What is Gardasil? Who should receive this vaccine? HPV is the abbreviation for Human Papilloma Virus. This is a virus that is spread by sexual contact. You can prevent the spread by abstaining from intercourse or by using condoms consistently. Limiting the number of sexual partners can also reduce your risk of HPV and cervical cancer. Research has shown that using the HPV screening test can detect high-risk changes in the cervix earlier than pap testing alone. Earlier detection lessons the need for invasive procedures to treat pre-cancer and cancer of the cervix. There are many types of HPV. They can be classified as low-risk or high-risk. The two most common low-risk types are 6 and 11, responsible for most cases of genital warts. Although most HPV infections do not cause cancer, the two most common high-risk varieties responsible for 70% of all cervical cancers are types 16 and 18. It is these four HPV types (6,11, 16,18) that make up the Gardasil vaccine. This vaccine is recommended for boys as well as girls starting at age 9-26. In most cases, it is covered by insurance in this same age group. The goal of any vaccine is to confer immunity to the condition for which it is given before the person is infected with the virus. Determining when to administer the vaccine is a decision best left to the patient, her parent (if a minor) and the health-care provider. While HPV testing is not a replacement for the Pap smear, a negative or non-detected HPV can provide reassurance of one’s low risk for cervical cancer, allowing the Pap smear to be performed less frequently.

The high-risk HPV should be done in women under thirty – only if the Pap smear test is abnormal or if the results are unclear. After age 30, it is recommended as part of routine screening. It is not felt to be a cost-effective practice for women under age 30 because the risk of cervical cancer and precancerous changes are low, as well as the fact that many women under this age, have transient HPV, which even if left alone, will usually not be present on a subsequent cervical cancer screen. So, to answer the question: V or not to V? ....... Have a discussion with your doctor regarding your risk profile, to review your Pap smear frequency and to see if you would benefit from the Gardasil vaccine.

Prostate Cancer: What Men Need to Know your doctor if you experience the following symptoms:  Pain or burning sensation while urinating  Trouble starting or stopping the flow of urine  Inability to urinate  Frequent urination  Blood in your urine

How do I know if I have prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is often found during a routine rectal exam and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. High levels of PSA in blood can mean that you have prostate cancer or other issues related to your prostate gland. As a result, your doctor may opt to take a sample of tissue from your prostate to determine if cancerous cells are present. You should talk with your doctor about whether prostate cancer screening is right for you.

Is treatment available for prostate cancer?

I

t is the most common form of cancer among American men, disproportionately affecting those over the age of 50. While nearly 200,000 men may be diagnosed with the disease in a given year, some may never suffer health problems as a result of it. Still, it remains the second most common cause of death for white, AfricanAmerican and Hispanic men. We are talking about prostate cancer, which impacts the male reproductive system. The cause of this disease remains unclear. James Hamrick, M.D., chief of oncology and hematology for Kaiser Permanente of Georgia, says it’s important for men to educate themselves about prostate health and talk with their doctor to determine if testing is right for them.

What is prostate cancer?

The prostate is a walnut-sized gland in men, located just below the bladder, which produces fluid found in semen. Men suffering from prostate cancer have an abnormal growth of cells in this gland. Cancerous cells in the prostate tend to grow slowly, which is why men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer often die from other causes. Still, early detection of the disease is key to providing treatment for more aggressive prostate cancers.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

In the early stages of the disease, many men experience no symptoms. However, prostate cancer can cause urinary problems. Talk with

Yes. If the cancer is not aggressive, your doctor may choose to monitor its growth over time. However, radiation, hormone therapy and surgery are other treatment options.

Although the cause of prostate cancer is unknown, are there risk factors?

Age, family history and race can impact your chances of developing prostate cancer. Men who are over the age of 50, African-American, or have an immediate family member with prostate cancer are more likely to develop the disease.

Plastic Surgery for the Modern Man

Let us pack your picnic for Chastain.

Our dishes are made with the care and attention you would find at home.

Do you see plastic surgery becoming a trend amongst your male patients? It is pleasantly surprising how each year, a larger number of men come for a consultation with us. As plastic surgery has become more acceptable in everyday life, whether through TV shows or increased awareness of the variety of procedures we perform, men are increasingly becoming an important component of our practice.

How does a cosmetic procedure for a man differ from a woman? The goals for what is “aesthetically pleasing” for a man are different than those for a woman. As such, when we design an approach for a man we must take into consideration his goals, which are obviously different - from incision placement to the amount of tissue removed and recontoured.

Hours: Monday-Saturday: 11 am-10 pm Sundays: 10:30 am-9 pm

What are some of the most common cosmetic procedures your male patients request? We see a significant amount of male patients come in to ask about body contouring (liposuction, coolsculpting) as well as peri-orbital rejuvenation (eyelid lifting). Less common but still frequent procedures include face and neck lifts and male breast reduction. In addition, men are now requesting botox and filler treatments.

Brunch: Saturday 11 am-3 pm Sunday 10:30 am-3 pm

Is the recovery time following cosmetic surgery different for a man? Recovery from surgery is similar between men and women, pending medical problems and medication usage. As a general rule, recovery is fairly rapid, depending on the intervention.

What should a man look for when seeking out a cosmetic surgeon? As with all cosmetic surgery, make sure you are seeking a board-certified plastic surgeon. Once you have a name of a certified plastics doctor, make sure that you feel comfortable with them in consultation, that they address all of your concerns and that they are confident in their ability to provide you with a result that you want. If any of the above isn’t met, seek another opinion.

3D Mammograms Reduce Callbacks I had my annual mammogram and I’ve been called back for additional testing. Should I be afraid that I have cancer? Many women who are called back almost always think the worst. Thankfully, mammography screening has built-in second opinions in the form of Computer Aided Detection (CAD). With CAD, images are analyzed by a computer to mark areas of suspected abnormality. Then, these areas are analyzed closely by the radiologist. Next the radiologist classifies the mammogram into normal or abnormal. Abnormal does not mean cancer. It only means that there is an area that requires additional imaging. Approximately 10% will be classified as abnormal and recalled for additional imaging. Only a few of those recalled will be diagnosed with breast cancer. The addition of 3-D imaging lowers the recall rate. The interpretation of mammograms is difficult because of the random distribution of tissue in the breasts. Reading a mammogram is similar to looking for an abnormality in a tree with only 2 pictures of the tree. Some women have more fatty tissue and tumors will stand out similar to a lone green leaf on a bare tree in winter. Other women have more glandular and fibrous tissue and locating an abnormality is similar to looking for a brown leaf in a tree full of green leaves. The addition of 3-D imaging improves the radiologist’s ability to find abnormalities. The radiologist looks at many images searching for signs of cancer. With most screening mammograms, there are only two projections of each breast provided by the mammographic technologist. Differences in tissue patterns between the right and left breast, distortions in the tissue patterns, masses, clusters of small calcifications, skin thickening and changes over time may require further evaluation. Once an abnormality is confirmed with additional mammographic views, most of the time it cannot be concluded that there is cancer based on the mammogram alone because cancers and noncancerous growth can look the same on mammography. Ultrasound is used to determine if a mass is cystic or solid. If a simple cyst can be verified by ultrasound, no further testing is done. Mixed masses or solid masses require follow-up or biopsy. New advanced ultrasound technology

Early detection using the latest technology. We offer BRCA cancer screening testing. Ask us about it. called Elastography helps to determine if a solid mass should be biopsied or followed. If a biopsy is recommended, remember 7080% of breast biopsies turn out to be benign. If you are called back after your regular screening mammogram, it is important to choose a mammographer who is current on the latest technology available, experienced in detecting even the slightest abnormality and is open to discussing your options. Have your questions ready for the radiologist and leave your appointment feeling assured that you are making the right decisions.

Advising the Next Generation

YOUR BEST RACE STARTS HERE.

We spend time planning to meet our goals, saving for our children’s education and our financial independence, and making sure our financial plan is in place with insurance policies. Then we follow the plan. When and how do you start educating your children about your plan and making their own plan?

I offer each of my clients’ children the opportunity to email, call, and/or meet with me whenever a financial issue arises. I also discuss their resumes, help practice job interviews, and help them network. If you are working with an advisor, ask him/her to meet with your children when you feel they are ready.

When they are young, you can discuss savings. When they start earning monies (lemonade stands, errands, allowance) you can discuss giving vs. saving vs. spending. Around age 7 (each child is different), bring them to the bank and have them open their savings account. Let them track their deposits and withdrawals. Let them make their first deposit and then visit the bank monthly to deposit more money. It can be five dollars! Discuss the prices of food and clothing when you are shopping with them. They understand at young ages!

As your children mature, you also want them to meet your trusted advisors so if something happens to you they are comfortable with your choice and not meeting a stranger to discuss wills and finances.

When they turn 18, you will want to visit your estate planning attorney and have the child sign their own Financial Power of Attorney, Advance Directive for Health Care, and Last Will and Testament. This is also a good time to discuss savings from their summer jobs and internships as well as the time value of money.

Cooking for a Cause By Lizzy Stroud In 1988, Chef Michael EdwardsPruitt got together with his neighbors to cook, in his own kitchen, for 14 of their friends who were too sick to prepare meals for themselves. From that experience, Open Hand Atlanta was born. Today, Open Hand Chef Klaskala, the 2014 Party in the Kitchen co-chair, at last year’s event prepares, packs and delivers more than 5,000 nutritious meals to individuals across Metro Atlanta daily who are sick or unable to afford the healthy food they need.

If you like what you taste, be sure to check out Party in the Kitchen’s auction items. Jean Goffaux, Open Hand’s community events manager, says, “[The chefs] play a major role in the fundraising component by auctioning off a private dinner with all Five Bone Rack, a band of local chefs, playing at this year’s Attack of the of the chefs in your Killer Tomato Festival home.” A new addition in this year’s auction is an Ito-Kase dinner with chefs Fuyuhiko Ito and Lisa Ito from the award-winning restaurant Umi. You can preview these personal culinary opportunities and the other auction items online before the event, since Party in the Kitchen offers mobile bidding this year. But the chefs aren’t just there to cook. Goffaux says, “In addition to the incredible food and drink that is always the star of the event, guests this year will enjoy listening to the all-star chef band Five Bone Rack.” This classic rock and greatest hits cover band is comprised of chefs Ford Fry, Jamie Adams, Ted Lahey, Gary Mennie and Zeb Stevenson, who have laid down their knives for the evening in favor of instruments. All of the proceeds from the auctions and event go to help Open Hand beat last year’s fundraising achievement of $275,000. Tickets start at $200. Jess Weiner

my

t s e B f sel

Jess Weiner wants you to know how beautiful you are. Yes, you! She dedicates her life to this message, spreading it through her books, her nine years as a global self-esteem ambassador for Dove, and her media consulting firm Talk to Jess. Weiner is “deeply committed to creating a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety, for girls and women,” and every day, her work and her active Facebook and Twitter pages show that. In our interview, Weiner shares her story and gives advice on navigating the choppy waters of social media, self-esteem and positive body image.

How did you decide to build a career about confidence, beauty, body image and self-esteem?

I spent most of my tween and teenage years struggling with body image and eventually eating disorders and the low self-esteem that goes along with those issues. I was young and had a lot of potential in me, but I didn’t really see a way to accept and embrace myself in a culture that wanted girls and women to look a very particular way.

How did that message translate into your books?

In my early 30s, I wrote “Life Doesn’t Begin 5 Pounds From Now.” At this point, I had spent 10 years talking to women all over the world, and one common thing I heard every woman say is that she was putting off her life until fill-in-the-blank: until she found a husband, until she got that wardrobe, until she got better hair, until she had more money, or whatever it was. It was always putting off her life until she felt beautiful and worthy of living it. So that book is about how to stop waiting and how to understand the power and potential of your life right now.

How do you use your consulting firm, Talk to Jess, to spread positive messages?

I often help create or consult on movies, TV shows or web shows. I go in, talk to the writers of a children’s show, and apply my wisdom, experience and expertise to the voices that impact girls on a media level. That is really exciting because Hollywood is looking at how to show women and girls a better world through the messages they receive.

What consulting experiences stick out in your mind?

There are tons. I remember one meeting where I was working on a script and the lead character was struggling with her body image. There were a lot of inappropriate facts or food jokes that the audience might laugh at, but a girl who watched it might have those stereotypes confirmed for her. When I explained that difference to the writing team, they were completely open to changing it – they just hadn’t seen it. Now the little girls who see this movie in a theater are going to have one less stereotype to deal with.

What impact has social media had on girls’ and women’s self-esteem?

When it comes down to beauty and confidence, you can find great inspiration online, and you can also find distracting and damaging messages. We have to educate girls in the digital age to know how to navigate that. Social media can put a lot of pressure on girls who feel like they need to look a certain way. On the positive side of social media, I think it has united girls and women in a way that we have never seen before.

How do you recommend women use social media to their advantage?

It is important to know from a personal standpoint that you can use social media to promote the good. It is all about what you retweet, what you repost and what you tend to focus on. On my page, I use our platform to call out powerful players in the media and to focus on young girls doing exceptional things in their community. I also love Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party. They talk about girls and women in a really powerful way, both historical and in modern day.

How can a woman become a self-esteem role model for other women?

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to feel like you’ve got it all under control or perfect to be a selfesteem role model to someone else. What I think you need to do is lead an authentic life. Live a life you feel proud of. Live a life where you have a healthy relationship with yourself and to your body image. By healthy I do not mean perfect or that you love yourself 24/7. We are works in progress, but authentic women can acknowledge where they are and have a lot of inspiration to go forward.

vein

Atlanta’s Vein Doctor Dr. Prevosti answers questions about running and vein disorders: Does running prevent varicose veins? No. Varicose veins are caused by failure of the one-way valves in leg veins (venous insufficiency), which allows gravity to pull blood back into the veins in reverse direction. This abnormal hydrostatic pressure can lead to varicose veins, aching, swelling, night cramps, numbness, and other symptoms. Risk factors for venous insufficiency are heredity, female gender, pregnancy and vocations that require prolonged standing or sitting. While physical activities such as running or walking do temporarily propel blood in the right direction, such exertion does not have a lasting effect. Does running cause varicose veins? No. There is no concrete evidence that running or any other type of exercise causes varicose veins, spider veins or venous insufficiency. The calf muscles are the “venous pumps” that push the venous blood against gravity back up to the heart. Therefore, any activity that engages the calf muscles prevents stagnant blood. Theoretically, one might envision that the pounding of the column of blood in the veins from the deceleration of the foot and leg hitting the ground while running might damage the one-way valves, but there is no medical evidence that such harm takes place. Are all protruding veins abnormal? No. People with a very low body-fat percentage (as manifested in many runners and body builders), have normal superficial veins that show through the skin because there is not enough subcutaneous tissue (i.e., fat) to hide them. Pronounced normal veins are most commonly seen on the inner aspect of the thighs and ankles, the inner and back areas of the calves, the arms and the back of the hands. To determine if protruding veins are normal or abnormal, both a venous duplex ultrasound and a physical examination are necessary. Are sports compression stockings helpful? For athletes who have venous insufficiency, then yes, calf-compression tubes or calf-high stockings help, both during exercise as well as during normal life activities. For athletes with normal vein functionality, calf-compression garments enhance the calf muscle’s pumping function of removing deoxygenated venous blood. Thus, compression garments may improve athletic performance.
